EU Kennzeichen / License Plates / Number Plates

in another post I mentioned that my fiance and I like to talk about where the cars around us come from when we're on the Autobahn, and that that's not possible in all european countries

for those outside the EU or outside of Germany I thought it might be very slightly interesting to go into more detail!

European license plates all look the same at first glance:

they're white (in a few countries yellow), have a blue stripe on the left with the EU stars at the top and 1-3 letters in white or yellow for the country at the bottom. The other (big) lettering is usually black. Sometimes there are flags/icons on the right side too.

You'll find that some other european countries have similar designs for their license plates, though not necessarily on purpose. In the UK you'll see both non-EU license plates and EU-license plates (with "GB" as the country code), though the latter is only permitted if the car was fitted with it before 2021.

Before talking more about German license plates, I want to note that there are various exceptions to the standard EU-license plate. Temporary license plates, plates for very old vehicles, for military/police/state vehicles, etc. often have a design that is different from the standard, including letter color, stripes left and right, etc.

Deutsche Kennzeichen

(i'll only talk about standard car license plates, thus ignore old timers, motor bike plates, etc.)

German license plates look like this:

It is always 1-3 letters, another 1-2 letters, 1-4 numbers

In total, it may only be 8 digits long

Electric cars can end in an "E" (optional)

The two letter groups are separated by space for round stickers. On the rear plate are two stickers: the "TÜV-Plakette" on the top (indicates when the next mandatory vehicle check is due), and a sticker for the Stadtkreis or Landkreis that registered the plate on the bottom. The front plate only has the Kreis-sticker.

First letter group

The first letter group always shows the Verwaltungsbezirk (≈ administrative division/district in which the car is registered (because license plates are always registered to a vehicle, not a person, as apparently is the case in other european countries)).

This is what I meant with talking about "where a car is from". The first couple letters tell you where a car is registered (and usually then too, that the owner lives in that area; you're obliged to register your car in your new district if you move, but idk how much that is really enforced)

There are more than 700 districts. Sometimes these are singular large cities (like Berlin, Cologne, ...), often they are larger (especially rural) areas.

Most people have one or two districts with which they associate bad driving. I come from the north-west of Baden-Württemberg. When I see a shitty driver and they have a "PF" or "GER" district code, I always "of fucking course it's a fucking Pforzheimer/Germersheimer"

There's also some silly mnemonics some people employ (like my fiance who points at every SÜW car (district: S��dliche Weinstraße) and says "sie üben wieder" ("they're practicing again").

Beyond getting annoyed at vague areas, it's also just a trivia game to pass the time. Occasionally we'll ask one another if we know a certain district code and, if not, google it.

You'll also learn new ones if you're driving and notice an influx of a certain district code on plates (like how I learned that PS is Pirmasens yesterday)

The letters of a code usually correspond to letters in the full name. One exception is plates of Hansestädte. Hansestädte are cities that belonged to a collective of trade cities in the middle ages, primarily port cities or cities along big rivers (e.g. Rhein, Neckar, Elbe). Six of them (200 overall, 70 with active hanseatic politics) have their district code start with an "H":

HB - Hansestadt Bremen

HH - Hansestadt Hamburg

HGW - Hansestadt Greifswald

HL - Hansestadt Lübeck

HST - Hansestadt Stralsund

HRO - Hansestadt Rostock

HWI - Hansestadt Wismar

(Bremen is why Heidelberg, a large city in the north of BaWü is labeled HD instead of HB (which would be natural since it's two words Heidel-Berg))

December 2023 also saw a first in German license plates: a city is close to running out of combinations and thus cars in München (Munich) can now have one of two district codes: M and MUC (new)

Second letter group

The second group of letters can be chosen freely by the person registering a car. There are certain forbidden combinations, most because of nazi-associations (KZ, HJ, SS,), some of them vary from Bundesland to Bundesland. Singular letters are sometimes forbidden because of what they spell with the letters of the first letter group.

Of course a general restriction is that there can't be two identical license plates.

Beyond these restrictions, the second letter group is of course often used to make words (if the district code allows), though often with incorrect spelling. In Karlsruhe (district code: KA), common license plate words are KA LT (cold), KAOS (das Chaos - the chaos), KA OT (der Chaot - the chaotic person), KA TZE/KA ZE (die Katze - the cat), KA LB (das Kalb - the calf (animal)) ...

If making a word is not possible or desired, many people instead go for initials (of themselves, them and their partner, their children, etc)

Number group

The numbers are also free to choose, though there are also forbidden number combinations (14, 88, ...). Additionally, the limit of 8 digits must be observed.

People often chose personally significant dates for better memorabilty.

Relevance

Is any of this important or necessary to know for tourists? Absolutely not.

But maybe other Germans want to share where the shitty drivers in their area come from (if that's not too personal, there is of course some information to be derived from this) OR what fun words they've seen or know of!

for anyone who has ever seen someone claim pansexual was coined on social media by teenagers in the early 2000s, the 2010s, and even in the past few years, and believed it or wondered if it’s true, or known it’s not true and been annoyed by the misinformation, this article is for you!

after listing out all of the claims i’ve seen, i succinctly debunk them by laying out a brief overview of pansexual’s history dating back to the 1960s, both as a term generally indicating universal appeal/inclusion and a term indicating sexual freedom/attraction to all genders. i include a look at pansexual’s use specifically within queer spaces, with a focus on bisexual spaces, as well.

i also touch briefly on omnisexual and polysexual existing in similar contexts to pansexual dating back to the 1960s. and finally, i discuss a little bit about how when, where, and by whom a label is created doesn’t determine the validity or usefulness of it, because these claims come with the implication that new labels, labels created by kids, and labels originating on social media aren’t legit forms of queer expression and identification.

Vocabulary - to want

A few different ways (that I know) to express wishes and desires.

eisiau - to want. One of the standard ways of saying you want something, all across Wales. In truth, it’s not actually a verbnoun like many others, it’s really a noun. That’s why you don’t need the ‘yn’ before it ad you would for any other verbnoun: ‘yn mynd’, ‘Dwi’n mynd’. ‘Dyn ni’n aros.’ Etc.

‘Dwi eisiau cysgu.’ I want to sleep.

I believe the reason for this is an older construction that is used in literary Welsh, but that got shortened and dropped off over time in colloquial Welsh. ‘bod ... ar [rhywun]’ was the construction used, roughly meaning to have ‘a want upon you’ (very roughly).

Double checking this with Wiktionary (beloved), they do have a credible literary source demonstrating this: the Welsh bible (which thanks to a frenzied linguistics and orthography-fuelled spiral down Wikipedia, and oddly enough, the Welsh comedian and radio broadcaster Elis James (unrelatedly), I know was first translated in the 1500s and directly led to the loss of the letter ‘k’ from the Welsh alphabet).

‘Yr Arglwydd yw fy Mugail; ni bydd eisiau arnaf.’ The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Close enough to colloquial Welsh to understand, that's using ‘eisiau arna (i)’. Over time, colloquial Welsh has dropped the ‘ar’. The example sentence above could've been 'Dwi eisiau cysgu [arna i]'.

A note. Some people have a misconception that eisiau should cause a soft mutation in the word following it, because it is an exceptional case of an action (of sorts) that doesn’t need an ‘yn’, and so must follow a pattern similar to a few other conjugations out there like ‘dylu’ (should).

‘Dylet ti ddweud rhywbeth’ (You should say something), ‘Galla i wneud rhywbeth amdano fe’ (I can do something about it), ‘Ga i rywbeth?’ (Can I have something?), the past tenses of gwneud, ‘wnaethon ni ddysgu Cymraeg’, ‘Mae rhaid iddyn nhw dduhino’n gynnar!’ (They must wake up early!)

And so on. This isn’t the case, as eisiau is not a conjugated verb. It’s just a noun for desire! (*not exactly. I’m trying to explain this as best I can)

There is a south Walian usage of ‘eisiau’ that makes this idea clearer.

In some southern dialects, the construction ‘mae eisiau i…’ is used to mean that someone needs something. E.g. ‘Mae eisiau i ti fwyta’ means ‘you need to eat’. What it literally means is ‘there is a need for you to eat’, and so you can see the noun eisiau (a need) in use.

North Walian Welsh uses the same structure, but with the noun angen instead. ‘Mae angen i ti fwyta.’ ‘Mae angen iddyn nhw sosban’, literally, ‘they are in need of a saucepan’.

Speaking of dialect differences, especially in north Wales Welsh, you might come across spelling variants of eisiau: ‘isio’, ‘isia’, (N) ‘isie’ (S), ‘isho’, etc. Perks of a phonetic language are that nothing’s a misspelling really if it sounds alright when said out loud. I did raise an eyebrow at the last one a little, ‘sh’ isn’t the English ‘sh’ in Welsh, is it? (Is that Wenglish?)

Other forms!

moyn - to want. Used pretty much only in the south and valleys, but this one is a regular verbnoun. ‘Dwi’n moyn cwpla fy ngwaith gytre’n fuan’ (I want to finish my homework soon)

(Just realised there are a Lot of dialect words in that sentence! Cwpla -> gorffen, gytre -> cartef)

It seems simpler than the exceptional eisiau construction, why isn’t it more widely accepted?, you ask. (Most people I’ve said it to say it immediately places you geographically to them because they never hear anyone else say it.) It derives from an older verb, ymofyn, which itself comes from the word gofyn (to ask), ‘ym’ + ‘gofyn’ = ‘ymofyn’, which sort of goes away from the original idea of wanting, and into one of asking. Still, language evolves, and so you will still hear moyn in South Wales. In fact, the Say Something In Welsh course teaches it (which is how I know it. Probably worth giving a disclaimer that I’m simply mad about linguistics and Welsh alternative bands, before anyone starts to think I live in Wales just because I occasionally write long grammar posts!)

Awydd - a desire. Used similarly to eisiau, no ‘yn’ precedes it. The whole point of making this post was that I just came across this sentence: ‘Ti awydd mynd i Gastell Caerfili?’ Meaning, do you want to go to Caerphilly Castle?

You might be right. I have no idea what the future has in store or if I'll come to regret it. But I've already stated my reasons. As it stands, with the year-long process we've already started and that we can't just flip on a dime overnight, my partner can't come and stay in Europe legally just like that. Legal immigration is not that easy in one way or the other. Also... Yeah, I've stated that before, but one shouldn't underestimate how shitty things have been getting in Europe for the past few years as well, and how the influence of the US (which is huge) is likely to make things worse. So again I'm not 100% sure whether that'd have been better anyway.

Also also... Ima be real, I've shared that before, but the time where I was separated from my partner due to the travel ban was the only time in my life where I had actual suicidal ideation. I don't want this to happen again. That's why I'm making moves so it doesn't, first and foremost.

i just passed 3x13 Parting Shot (and wow do i feel the despair and hopelessness of Huntingbird leaving </3) which was the first episode that subtly points out Daisy’s monolingualism, which always… rubbed me the wrong way. you’re telling me that an orphan who was dead-on obsessed with finding her parents and her heritage and was most likely discriminated in her youth wouldn’t be curious of what language her parent(s) spoke? you’re telling me she didn’t spend her decade (and then some) pre-SHIELD to learn them, even if they’re just wild guesses?

so! consider: the most random group of languages she has surface-level knowledge of inferred from what other people think she is or recognize her as

Chinese: She’s half-bad with the tones, given the lack of resources there would’ve been during the 90s-2000s, but she can read conversations in Mandarin when she stalks Weibo. She’s probably hacked Chinese servers before since we know she knows her way around (see 1x05 The Girl in the Flower Dress, the computer was in Chinese and she completed her hack and then some in seconds.) Cantonese is at a very basic level. very (read: swear words)

Korean: She can read and write still, since it’s pretty easy (i learned the script once nine years ago and it’s still there lol). K-Pop gained notoriety in the US in the 2010s, she might’ve considered it. (is this me plugging my current Girls’ Generation rotation? probably LOL). knows a lot of words, none of the syntax and grammar. Probably listens to K-Pop too. Bonus: she surprises the team when they miss extraction in rural South Korea and need to get on a plane in Incheon for Plan B–the gov’t didn’t like the Avengers’ mess with Ultron–and Daisy gets them a train ride to Seoul despite their translator app showing Hangeul instead of its romanization.

Thai: she tried. she really did. but it’s too hard. she can recognize it when she hears it though. same goes to Vietnamese

Filipino: swear words (yes, even the Bisaya ones). and can probably manage reading upper class Taglish (it’s 90% English anyway)

Spanish: she understands maybe 60% of the rants on Twitter. also Brazilian Portuguese because they’re kind of similar

a lot of these are limited to reading because she doesn’t have someone to practice with </3 and none of them can pass as fluency but trust, she can read and listen

btw her contrast between 3x13, 3x11 and 3x17 hints on her being Hived, which i think is cool

K. On the edge of consciousness.

Yusuf wakes slowly, so slowly that he can’t see and isn’t even sure he can open his eyes, only half-sure he still has eyes, and that’s how he knows there’s something very, very wrong. He can’t move, can’t hear, can’t even smell anything. He doesn’t remember exactly what happened to him, but every part of him is burning, and he’s fairly sure the weird aching sensation in his head is his skull knitting itself back together, which. He really, really didn’t need to know what that feels like. 

There’s a scraping in his chest when he breathes in, but at least he’s breathing. 

Where is he? He could be anywhere. He could be in the middle of the street, could have been dragged away from the fighting from someone who had seen him breathing through a wound that should have killed him immediately. When he wakes, what will he find? Will they have taken his weapon? How long has he been dead? 

Will Nicolò be able to find him, if they are separated? Will he even try?

Slowly but steadily, he starts to hear something: a high pitched whistling that sounds like it’s coming from deep inside his own head. The darkness begins to lift, leaving flickering amber lights across his vision, and a shadow in front of him. 

There’s a voice, too, one that sharpens into words as Yusuf’s hearing begins to return. He doesn’t understand their meaning, but the cadence of them and the voice itself is familiar. 

“Are you awake?” Nicolò asks softly, switching to Arabic. 

Yusuf tries to make a sound in response. Whether it’s audible he doesn’t know, because the only noise he can really make is a rasping exhale, but Nicolò hushes him anyway.

“Do not… you can be slow,” Nicolò says. He’s more comfortable with the sounds of the language now, but still doesn’t always string sentences together well. “We are safe. I am here.”

He’s made aware of where his hand is by the feeling of Nicolò reaching for it. Yusuf manages to make an actual sound this time, but still can’t form words. Nicolò squeezes his hand gently. 

“I am here,” he says again. 

Eventually, Yusuf’s skull seems to piece itself back together fully, and his vision sharpens, letting him see that they’re backed into the corner of the two remaining intact walls of a house ravaged by fire, Nicolò crouched in front of him with his sword in hand. There’s a trail of blood leading to where Yusuf is lying now, and a section of the room that has collapsed. He can piece together enough. Nicolò would have had to drag him over here.

This time, he manages to make a sound, even if he can’t quite form words. Nicolò looks down at him over his shoulder, and there is blood on his face and in his hair, and only then does Yusuf notice the bodies in the room. 

“Okay?” Nicolò asks. 

Yusuf manages to nod, and it sends a spike of pain along his spine. Nicolò turns slightly to look at him properly. 

“You are almost done, I think,” he says. “You did not… you were asleep for a long time. I did not know if…”

“Nicolò,” Yusuf finally manages, hoarse.

“Rest,” Nicolò says. “I am here.”

Learning Japanese and I get insane whiplash when I realize Gohan is actually Rice because I forgot half of the DBZ Characters are either puns, or names based off Japanese folklore or even items.
