Title: Not Quite Out
Author: Louise Willingham
Series or standalone: standalone
Publication year: 2021
Genres: fiction, LGBT+, romance, contemporary
Blurb: William Anson is done with relationships, thanks. He’s starting the second year of his medicine degree single, focused, and ready to mingle with purely platonic intentions...but meeting Daniel, a barely-recovered drug addict ready to start living life on his own terms, might just change that. There are two problems. One: William isn’t out - what’s the point in telling your friends you’re bisexual when you aren’t going to date anyone? Two: Daniel’s abusive ex-boyfriend still roams the university campus, searching for cracks in Daniel’s recovery. No matter how quickly William falls for Daniel, their friendship is too important to risk ruining over a crush. William is fine with being just friends for the rest of forever...well, not quite.

Not quite out, Louise Willingham
Summary:
William Anson is done with relationships, thanks. He’s starting the second year of his medical degree single, focused and ready to mingle with purely platonic intentions.
Meeting Daniel - a barely recovered drug addict ready to start living life on his own terms - May we’ll change that. There are just two problems.
One: William isn’t out. After all, what’s the point in telling your friends you’re bisexual when you aren’t going to date anyone?
Two: Daniel’s abusive ex-boyfriend still roams the university campus, searching for cracks in Daniel’s recovery.
No matter how quickly William falls for Daniel, their friendship is too important to risk ruining over a crush. William is fine with being just friends for the rest of forever.
Well, not quite.
Review:
I made a lot of notes reading this book, none of them are good.
I think it Can all be summarized in two things: every plot point is very underdeveloped and the main narrator is too unlikeable.
I bought this book because the plot seemed very interesting, it looked like a book with hard themes that I was interesting in seeing more of, but trust me when I say the actual book is not as exciting as the summary makes it seem; I don’t wanna spoil anything but Wills interest in Dan most of the time comes across as obsession and not in a healthy “new crush” kind of way, there’s so many red flags about his behavior towards Dan that I just couldn’t find myself actually liking their relationship at all.
When you reach the end of the book you realize that the author tried to fix everything with a quick “they’re in love and happy so it’s all good now” and everything feels very loose end, I wasn’t asking them to tie everything nicely with a bow, but at least some actual development of their plot points would’ve been nice.
It took me all month to read this book, and I probably will never read it again, I don’t recommend you do either.

Ellas McDaniel (born Ellas Otha Bates, December 30, 1928 – June 2, 2008), known as Bo Diddley, was a singer, guitarist, songwriter, and music producer who played a key role in the transition from the blues to rock and roll. He influenced many artists, including Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Animals, and The Clash. His use of African rhythms and a signature beat, a simple five-accenthambone rhythm, is a cornerstone of hip-hop, rock, and pop music. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Blues Hall of Fame, and the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame. He has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He is recognized for his technical innovations, including his distinctive rectangular guitar, with its unique booming, resonant, shimmering tones. He was born in McComb, Mississippi. He was the only child of Ethel Wilson, a sharecropper's teenage daughter, and Eugene Bates, whom he never knew. Wilson was only sixteen and being unable to support a family, she gave her cousin, Gussie McDaniel, permission to raise her son. McDaniel adopted him, and he assumed her surname. The origin of the stage name Bo Diddley is unclear. He claimed that his peers gave him the name, which he suspected was an insult. He said that the name first belonged to a singer his adoptive mother knew. Harmonicist Billy Boy Arnold said that it was a local comedian's name, which Leonard Chess adopted as his stage name and the title of his first single. He stated that his school classmates in Chicago gave him the nickname, which he started using when sparring and boxing in the neighborhood with The Little Neighborhood Golden Gloves Bunch. A diddley bow is a homemade single-string instrument played mainly by farm workers in the South. It has influences from the West African coast. He married Louise Willingham (1946-1947), and married Ethel Mae Smith (1949); they had two children. He married Kay Reynolds (1960-1980); they had two daughters, He married Sylvia Paiz (1992-?); they were divorced at the time of his death. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CmysODKrGnn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Book Review: Not Quite Out by Louise Willingham
I truly wanted to fully love this book because I will never stop advocating for more LGBT+ representation in literature. (Or any form of media, really). And I did like this book, to some extent. I will admit there are things I liked, so I will list them off first before I get into what I didn't like.
First, we love ourselves some good LGBT+ rep. That will never be a negative in my books. Second, I really liked a lot of the secondary characters, especially Lilley (although we don't see her, or much of anyone for that matter, much). Although I will say her suddenly dating Cas at the end did seem to come out of nowhere. Love that it happened, but it felt out of place. I also liked Dan's recovery story. He seemed to be the only one with some character growth, and I did find him likeable.
Unfortunately, I had some issues with the rest of the story, mainly the MC and narrator, Will.
When Will first met Dan, he became very stalker-like, very fast. And then he was just plain obsessive with Dan literally the entire book, so much so that even other characters had to keep pointing out how obsessive he was. I didn't like Will very much, which is sad since he is the MC we are stuck with. He's way too obsessed with Dan from the beginning and can't seem to function unless Dan is literally touching him. Even then, he just bawls at literally everything. Nothing wrong with men showing emotion. In fact, it's terrific. But I feel like Will is just crying and upset at everything and everyone.
Also, I don't think his relationship with Dan is very healthy. Dan was going through some tough times and all Will can think about is how much he wants to be with him. Like I get it, he cared for his friend, but the way he handled every situation just rubbed me the wrong way.
Not to mention Will was so obsessed with Dan that he ignored his friends and even classwork. For someone who wanted to be a doctor, he wasn't putting in the work. Nor do I think he's in the right mindset to become a doctor.
As for the writing, especially for over half the book, they say "thank you" and "you're welcome" (and "I'm sorry" like fifty bazillion times. I get they are polite and all but there had to be better ways to write that. Especially because they'd be thanking each other multiple times per paragraph. It's almost drinking game level. (But don't, because you might die).
I also didn't like that so much time was spent with them going to sleep and waking up. I get the author was trying to make some cute scenes between Will and Dan, but it wasn't doing it for me. I also didn't see any chemistry between them until waaaaay later. Like, near the end later. For most of the book, as I mentioned, it was just Will obsessing over Dan while he was recovering.
The book itself was still a good read. Not the best book I've ever read, but certainly not the worst. I think it could have been excellent with some more revisions. Or have Dan be the MC instead of Will. I really didn't like Will.
