Welcome to “‘Supernatural is filmed before a live studio audience’: A Supernatural Rewatch Blog” with Lor and Mace!

Up today, s5e8: Changing Channels.

Sam comes home to the boys’ bright, sunny apartment to find that Dean has been shirking his research in favor of entertaining a bikini-clad lady. Oh, and there’s a laugh track. What? Rewind. A few days earlier, the boys are investigating the death of a man with anger-management problems who seems to have been killed by the Incredible Hulk. Sam suspects the Trickster, and suggests trying to convince him to help them stop the apocalypse. When they go to an abandoned warehouse thinking they have a lead on where the Trickster will be, they get zapped into a hospital where everyone thinks they are doctors, doctors who seem to be caught up in a great deal of personal drama. The boys are stuck on TV, making their way through a number of shows, including Doctor Sexy, Dean’s “guilty pleasure” medical drama. They catch the Trickster, and he tells them to “play their roles” before disappearing. With the help of Cas, they figure out the Trickster must actually be an angel, trap him in holy fire, and make him explain himself. He’s Gabriel, and he insists Sam and Dean must play their roles in the apocalypse and that the boys mirror the conflict in Heaven, with Dean the faithful son (Michael) and Sam the rebellious one, who chaffed under his father’s rules (Lucifer). Dean rejects all this, but they are both shaken.

For me, s5e8 "Changing Channels" really hammers home how many alternative parallels there are between Dean and the various angels

The show does a lot of work to emphasize the most obvious parallel: Dean is like Michael, the solider defending an absent father.

But in this episode Gabriel is like Dean: he just wants to see his family stop fighting. It's a perfect parallel of every interaction up until this point (mostly in s1) when John, Sam, and Dean are in the room: John and Sam are at each other's throats, and Dean is caught in the middle of their buffer and wants them to quit.

And also s4e22 "Lucifer Rising" Cas is is like Dean, because Dean tells him he can't be a soldier following orders because he needs to choose the morally right path. It mirrors s1e21-22 "Salvation Army" and "Devil's Trap" when Dean deviates from John's orders to hunt and kill Yellow Eyes to keep his family together.

And the look Cas gives Gabriel at the end of this episode? Like "do you see what I mean? He's right. We can learn from him."

So much of the first three seasons was spent on Dean breaking his ties from being John's soldier and leaning more into what he wants: a normal life, keeping his family alive and together. So much of his s4 and s5 interactions with angels are parallels to that character arc, him imparting this lived wisdom on Cas and Gabriel.

So to hear that Dean dies hunting? After all of that? I think his storyline is a true Tragedy.

Watching Supernatural for the first time after observing the fandom from various degrees of closeness for about a decade has been WILD. Nothing could have prepared me for the twists and turns this show takes. (Also I had no idea most of the characters existed. I’d only ever heard Sam, Dean, Castiel, John, and very rarely Chuck)

I just finished S5E8, where Sam and Dean get pulled into various TV shows, and at first it’s like, wow, you can tell they had so much fun making this goofy little episode, and then it drops just the most out there lore. Like what do you mean the Trickster has been the archangel Gabriel this entire time? What do you mean the reason Sam and Dean are the vessels of Michael and Lucifer is that they were predestined from the beginning of time to mirror those angels? I’m sitting here chuckling about Sam getting turned into the Knight Rider car, having a minor existential crisis about whether that reference will soon be too outdated for “the youth”, when suddenly you’re hitting me with predestination lore???

Man, what the fuck is this show…

S3E11 Mystery Spot - LITERALLY a timeloop fanfic. EXTREMELY good. fave pre-Cas episode for me.

S5E8 Changing Channels - brings back mystery spots MOTW and makes him even more powerful. iconic behaviour, great episode.

S6E17 My Heart Will Go On is fun hijinks-y but admittedly has very little on-screen time travel. Balthazar is in it though and I like him

S6E18 Frontierland - Dean and Sam send themselves back in time AND it’s a cowboy episode. VERY star trek

S13E16 Scoobynatural - IT COUNTS I THINK. Semi-related, S8E8 Hunteri Heroici involves a guy who make cartoons come to life with his mind. It’s a very fun and very pretty episode and Cas and Dean r gay, well worth watching <3

S4E17 It’s A Terrible Life - Zachariah traps Sam and Dean in alternate reality where Dean is a (heavily implied out queer) businessman of some sort and wears fruity suits. Sam is there I guess. One of its finest Gay Homophobia episodes and genuinely very fun to watch.

S11E14 The Vessel - Dean wears a fruity little sailor outfit and Casifer (Lucifer who is possessing Castiel and the Winchesters don’t know yet - it’s a whole story arc) fists Sam’s soul just for funsies. The ONLY reason Casifer couldn’t get on that boat is because if Cas saw Dean’s fruity sailor outfit for more than a minute he would have lost his MIND and Lucifer woulda had to leave his vessel sharpish.

S8E11 LARP and the Real Girl - I think the title speaks for itself really, I think this counts! Charlie Bradbury (Felicia Day’s character) is in it and she’s cool and gay and Dean wears chainmail <3

S7E12 Time After Time I can’t remember that much about this ep but Dean does wear a very good 40s suit including a shoulder holster <3

I really want to tell you to watch the Belphegor episodes (S15E1-S15E3) but none of it would actually make sense I’m just obsessed with them bringing a messy gay bitch demon into Jack’s body literally top 10 Supernatural Gay Homophobia Moments in my onion.

S8E12 As Time Goes By - Sam and Dean’s grandfather jumps forward in time to find them, and introduces them to the history of the Men Of Letters, whose house they will steal in the next episode

S4E3 In The Beginning - This and the next episode are only ranked so low because I don’t care about Mary and John drama. HOWEVER. Zachariah sends Dean back in time to meet his mum before she married John and Zachariah very possibly fucked her. There are a LOT of memes about this now.

S5E13 The Song Remains The Same - Anna tries to stop Sam from being born. This entire concept is VERY funny to me. As is Sam and Dean showing up on the doorstep of their mum and dad, who do not have children yet, telling them their real names and saying ‘it’s a family name’ when John points out that Mary has relatives with the same name. Comedic genius I don’t care about the rest of the episode but from what I remember it’s pretty good.

S14E13 Lebanon - this episode is bad because it tries to redemption arc John BUT. it gave us  [spoilers] 1) lesbian steve jobs ted talk sam 2) Dean trying to placate alt-Cas who never got to know him by doing the ‘Cas....’ and gentle touch thing and alt-Cas just going ham and obliterating his ass 3) Dean choosing to go back to their world (with Cas <3) over staying in this universe with his Dad because he’s not worth it <3

There are several flashback eps to Dean and Sam’s childhoods, but as you can imagine these are all pretty sad and not the kind of thing you wanna watch For Funsies. The wiki has a list of those here.

The longest alt-universe arc is the Apocalypse World - a world where the Angels and Demons successfully orchestrated their plan to cause the apocalypse and are steadily wiping out the last of the human population. This isn’t overall a “fun” arc, but is v interesting and pique your attention if you like time travel and AU content. The wiki lists all the episodes here.

Something else about S5E8 that really stuck with me was the scene at Scotty Thomas Games. The show is openly critical of this anarcho-capitalist notion that you can profit off of catering to murderous people and in doing so, your user base will feel fulfilled with the simulation and no longer have the desire to commit atrocities. I’ve heard this argument from every bottom right elon-musk-fucking engineering student on the planet. 

Why would anyone think Killshare is a good idea? Who is the person who thinks “I should make an unmoderated and anonymous message board on the dark web for people who are interested in killing?” One that’s driven by greed. One that can capitalize off it and sleep at night thinking he’s found the solution to crime. And Lucifer rightfully points out that this forum and the game it’s based off of will only encourage these violent appetites just when I thought he couldn’t get any sexier.

Anyway I love this show and I am foaming at the mouth ready to share my interpretations. Whether you want them or not, they’re coming.

Listen i have no software and absolutely no skills for making fan videos, but i have this idea for a Lucifer/Deckerstar video. 

I am a huge sucker for fan videos that use 2 songs. So...

You know the part at the beginning of S5E8 where they show Dan shooting Lucifer and everything is in slow motion and “The End of the World” by Sharon Van Etten is playing.  I want a Deckerstar fan video that begins with a different song, but has this interlude in the middle of the video to “The End of the World” with like maybe a montage of them getting injured for each other.

s5e1: *concerned vibrating because what little family the Winchesters have is being shredded to pieces* Already knowing from tumblr that Sam is Lucifer’s vessel (that one gifset makes the rounds a lot), I’m cautious about finding out that Dean is Michael’s vessel. Literary symmetry or whatever, but I just don’t have a good feeling about where this is going.

s5e2: Damn, War didn’t have to do much. One point for style; another point because my family really liked that ride (relative had a red mustang in their youth).

s5e3: Things don’t seem to go very well when Sam and Dean split up.

s5e4: More time travel, which explains the Lucifer!Sam bit. ((dat scene tho))

s5e5: *wonders why so many episodes feature Ohio because I, a person from Ohio, am not used to so many mentions let alone stopping by when there’s so much apocalypse stuff going on* RIP Leshii (another Pagan spirit / deity)

s5e6: I have a vague memory of someone calling Sam the Antichrist at one point, but I take it the definition’s a little malleable. I’m not going to be surprised if we see Jesse again, but I kinda hope we don’t.

s5e7: *sweats nervously* Thankfully someone who understands poker was watching with me because I know zero about the game.

s5e8: OH. Another episode where I recognized gifs (tv shows). So the Trickster is actually Gabriel. I feel like I technically knew that from tumblr, but I just hadn’t filed the info away correctly.

s5e9: A con in OH (please do the apocalypse elsewhere). I had to do so much explaining for my family (cons, cosplay, and well, fandom stuff). *doesn’t feel very grateful for the gay crumb. because it’s one helluva crumb*

s5e10: wait a fucking minute Crowley has an accent; since when, my internal voice for his gifs have been so off, oh no. *I guess I’ll accept that gay crumb?*
