Middle school Art, 11 year old with braces and a little shy over them, of course Patrick makes fun of him.

They are talking during lunch and the silver glinting in the sun of Art’s smile caught Patrick’s attention. His nose scrunched in mock horror at the sight.

A curious Patrick raises a brow, "What is that in your mouth?”

Art smiles because he finally noticed, "Orthodontic excellence."

Patrick squints and grins, "Looks more like medieval torture devices to me."

Art rolls his eyes, "At least my teeth won't look like fangs when I'm sixteen."

"Oh my god. You can't even eat apples anymore, can you? Or chips? What about gum?"

"You just cut the apple, chips are more tedious you have to like suck them first and gum isn't allowed, at least not for me"

Then he pulls a tiny, stretched-out rubber band from his lunchbox.

"I can shoot these across the cafeteria. Wanna see?"

Patrick yelps and dodges dramatically as Art fires the band at his knee. Somewhere in the distance, a girl watching them giggles.

Year two of middle school

Patrick shows up on the first day with his hoodie pulled so far up he's basically a drawstring with eyes.

Art spots him at the bike rack.

"You good?" it's Art’s turn to squint now.

Patrick mumbles something unintelligible. Art walks closer in hopes of hearing better.

"Open your mouth Patrick, I can't hear you."

"…No—“ Patrick mumbled.

Art leans in with a knowing smile, "You got braces?!"

Patrick groans, "Powerchains, Art. Second appointment and they are stretching the life out of me."

"And a lisp!," Art laughs even harder.

Patrick kicks Art’s bike, making him stumble a little. "I don't!"

Art is still laughing so hard he wheezes, "What color you picked the Karma?"

Patrick pouts, "I wanted black but mom picked blue, I hate it, I look like a toothpaste commercial gone wrong."

Art leans against his bike, wheezing again. "You made fun of me for months, god, and now you can't eat chips without crying."

Patrick scowls, "Shut up. I'm never smiling again."

Art grins. Metal and all. "Hey, take this," he hands Patrick a tiny plastic case from his back pocket.

Patrick frowns, "What's that?," he takes the box skeptically.

"Wax, you'll need it. Trust me. Back molar, right side. Always the first one." Art looks at him.

Patrick gulps, "What..."

Art palms his shoulder, "It's salvation, you're welcome..."
