Finan had never met a vampire before he found himself on the shores of a land not his own. The church did not like them, believed them to be soulless servants of the devil, damned to hell and his father ran his household to the letter of what the faith dictated so Finan had never even seen one until that day on the beach.
When the fighting was over and Finan had finally gotten the revenge he had been dreaming of for three years he came face to face with his first member of the undead. Uhtred had told him stories of his brother but seeing the man in the flesh was still a surprise, a shock compared to what he had always been told vampires were like.
Ragnar was every inch a warrior, tall and broad, a true Dane. But he was also quick to laughter, loud and boisterous and it was clear how loyal he was to Uhtred, how much he loved his brother whom Finan had chosen to bind himself too.
After the big, blond, vikingr vampire Finan got to meet many many more vampires as he travelled with Uhtred and his companions. First amongst Ragnar men whom they collected on the way to Eoforwic. Nearly the entire Danish party were vampires, with only a few humans amongst the mix. Then once they had made it to Eoforwic, Finan met one of the intriguing vampires, a young Dane named Sihtric in Uhtred's service.
Uhtred had told Finan about the bastard son of his mortal enemy as they had rode towards Eoforwic. Who had sworn himself to Uhtred just days before the Lord had been sold to Sverri. The Abbess Hild had told them that the Dane had stayed behind in Eoforwic to be their eyes and ears within King Guthred’s court. To spy and report back anything of importance as her and Ragnar had searched for Uhtred.
Uhtred first introduced Finan the Sihtric the night they arrived in Eoforwic, after the Lord had confronted the King who had betrayed him and given him the severed hand of Sigefrid Thurgilson. Uhtred left the young Dane with Finan with instructions for Sihtric to take care of Finan’s needs. To make sure his new second had a warm meal and a place to sleep and that his horse was stabled and fed, before coming to find the Lord.
Finan wasn't able to read much off the vampire that first night. He was quiet, soft spoken, but incredibly respectful. He was the near opposite of Ragnar and his warriors and yet still so different to what Finan had been raised to expect from a vampire.
Nearly a week passed and Finan spent most of his time in Sihtric's company. Days spent helping Uhtred strategize and training the gathered warriors for the battle to come. Evenings spent talking and drinking and building the comradery necessary for a successful army.
During that time Finan was able to catch glimpses of the true depth of Sihtric character. His compassion and regard towards others, especially animals and the children, whom the young warrior always had the time to speak with when they approached him, eagerly and without fear whenever the Dane was walking the street.
His completed and utter devotion to Uhtred.
Two weeks after their arrival in Eoforwic Finan stumbled across Uhtred and Sihtric in a private moment. His entrance into the Lords room had not been quiet, he had knocked loudly and been bid to enter so Finan knew that both Uhtred and Sihtric were aware he was there but clearly they didn’t care.
Sihtric was on his knees, looking up at Uhtred with such devotion shining in his mismatched eyes. Finan could see a dusting of pink across Sihtric's cheeks, evidence the vampire had fed at some point that day.
Uhtred cupped the side of Sihtric's face, touch tender as his thumb brushed across Sihtric's bottom lip. Finan's cock filled as his blood rushed south fast enough to leave him light headed.
Uhtred asked his oath again. “You swear your sword is mine?”
Sihtric answered without hesitation, one clasped around the hammer pendant around his neck. “Yes, Lord. Until death and beyond, I am yours.”
Finan swallowed down a groan as Sihtric opened his mouth without hesitation as Uhtred unlaced his trouser and fed his cock between those soft lips, not an ounce of shame at their audience.
Finan knew he should leave but he was entranced by the sight of his Lord feeding Sihtric his cock, each roll of his hips slow and smooth. Uhtred's blue eyes were intense as they met Finan's and he watched as the black of Uhtred's pupils expanded until only the thinnest of colour remained.
Uhtred turned his gaze back down to the young warrior at his feet and cupped the back of Sihtric's head, fingers sinking into the loose braid and scratching at his scalp.
“That's perfect Sihtric… show us what a good boy you are…” the moan Sihtric let out at those words were muffled by the cock in his throat but Finan could hear it clearly from where he was still frozen inside the door to Uhtred’s room. His cock throbbed from its confines within his trousers and he palmed himself over the fabric to relieve some of the ache.
Finan wanted to know what the Danes' sinful mouth felt like upon his own skin, how hot it would be sinking down around his cock. To feel the sharp edge of the fangs he had seen the vampire flash at his opponents in the training yard as he danced circles around them. Axe in hand and muscles filled with barely contained bloodlust. He wanted to know if the young man fucked with the same enthusiasm and prowess as he showed while fighting. He hoped he would find out soon.

My relationship with the werewolves are a lot easier versus vamps and i originally was going to draw Luke or Maya (definitely not Alaric or Gretel). Butttt Draculaura-costumed Magnus kind of did set the pace, so now we do have werewolf Alexander because if you could go malec definitely make it malec

My Secret Sanata gift this year! This was so much fun to write but different which is always hard. I also did more research for this fic than any other I think I’ve ever done.
Hope you like it!
Maybe If You’re Lucky Mature Historical Au, Vampire!Alec, Light angst, Happy ending, Friends to Lovers
Magnus and Alec meet throughout the centuries, eventually they get it right Or when Magnus helps an orphaned vampire in the late 1700s the last thing he expects is for them keep finding each other. --- Alec turns to Magnus. “Thank you. I don’t know how to repay you.”
“You can repay me by not jumping ladies in the street again, Alexander.”
Alec nods and turns to Ottilie but stops turning back to Magnus. “Will I ever see you again, Magnus?
“Maybe if you’re lucky. “
“I hope luck is on my side again then”

Recently got back into the shadowhunter universe by cassandra claire so here is who I think would be parabatai's
James and Sirius - do I need to explain? alone they are one half of a whole, share thoughts, closer than brothers, always each others first choice
Pandora and Regulus - it just makes sense, they complete and compliment, the one's sent to do the dirty work, they would use the bond as an excuse for regulus to escape his parents, grumpy and sunshine y'know?
Bellatrix and Andromeda - a little unconventional but they were as thick as thieves, makes the betrayals hurt just that little bit more, i think Andromeda for a time would have stabilized Bellatrix a lot
Mary and Marlene - the duo no expects til their already kicking ass, one's willing to play the politics while the other is fighting, can't imagine a world without the other in it, (marlene is also Alec coded in the meaning she was in love with her parabatai for a hot minute)
It is important to me that you know Lily and Remus are Warlock besties (yes, wolfstar are malec variants here) and Dorcas is a vampire in this AU. Barty was a shadowhunter but got turned into a werewolf because his father betrayed him

AU. Malec, lots of backstory and "it's complicated" good! Camille.
Okay, basically Buffy the vampire slayer, but with lots of differences, and set after the theoretical series. (You will hopefully understand what I mean)(almost all characters are adults! The teenage vampire slaying is part of the origin story.) Camille is the vampire slayer. She meets Alec, Izzy, and Jace when she saves them from being sacrificed by a satanist cult in New York. Unable to close their eyes to the hidden world that has opened to them, the three want to help her. Camille is reluctant to accept their help and companionship at first, but they wear her down. For 2 years, they form a pretty good team. But then a prophecy is revealed, or a great calamity hinted at, or someone gets a vision or something, which demands the slayer turn back to (insert fantasy town here), - let's call it Dawnsbury for now. The town where she finished her highschool, did most of her slayer duty, and was a kinda really mean entitled bitch of a teenager. She had had a team then as well. Fellow classmates and others, eager to help and support her. One of them most of all. Raphael, the souled vampire with his crytpic advice and fighting prowess. Simon, the nerdy computer geek with his research skills and misplaced hero worship. Sweet Magnus. Whose life she saved when they met. Who fell in love with her. Who did everything for her. Who learned magic for her. And who she used and abused and betrayed and abandoned. A past full of regrets, that she had done her best to outgrow, (and run from). But of course she had to go back. Of course her new team accompanies her. Of course her old team is still there. Of course they, especially Magnus, want nothing to do with her. Of course Alec falls in love with Magnus basically from the get go.

for the malec prompts thing: Reverse AU? (shadowhunter magnus x warlock alec)
I had to think about this one for sure. I’ve never read any reverse AU for malec. I wasn’t sure who to keep as shadowhunters or to switch everything. I hope you like it!
“The man is 200 years old, and we don’t have one high quality picture of him?”
Hodge gives Magnus an exasperated look and carries on with the presentation, “Alec Lightwood is High Warlock of Brooklyn. As Magnus blatantly put it, he is 200 years old, which is deemed young for warlocks. The fact he has this position shows how intelligent, resourceful, and clever he is. He’s dangerous and sharp as a nail. If we’re going to find him and interrogate him, we’re going to need to be smart about this.”
Magnus rolls his eyes, flipping his dagger between his painted fingers. He squints at the pictures on the screen, presumably the only four photos they have of this Alec. One is of a group of French and American soldiers, and many of them have their arms bandaged and blood and dirt on their faces. They’re standing in rubble and smiling goofily at the camera. There is one man in the back with his face turned, blood and guck dirtying his face. His black hair is long and disheveled with a beret on top.
Magnus has no idea how anyone found this picture, or narrowed down the identification of the soldier to be Alec Lightwood. Though, the man in the photo was staring off and had a way about him that differentiated him from the others. His body posture and the one side of his exposed face was calculating, showing an envious amount of knowledge and experience. Like he knew something everyone else didn’t.
The other photos are of him on the battlefield with only half his face, and then one is a faraway photo of him standing in front of the Titanic when it was still docked in England. There are a few question marks on that photo, but Magnus highly doubts this extremely smart man who avoids cameras and attention like his life depends on it would sink a ship.
“Why do we need to find him anyway?” Catarina asks beside Magnus.
“The Consul needs to know where the warlocks are with Valentine. More and more of them are disappearing, whether from Valentine kidnapping them for his experiments or they’re going into hiding,” Hodge explains with a sigh. He scratches his neck. “Magnus helped us out with knowing Clary. She didn’t say where Alec lives, but she slipped and said a group of them are meeting at Pandemonium.”
“So he may not even be there,” Ragnor dulls, rolling his eyes. He stands with a dramatic huff, patting his pockets for his seraph blade.
“It’s our best chance,” Hodge clips. “We’re leaving in thirty.”
*****
Magnus goes to Pandemonium on a weekly basis. He tells Robert and Hodge he goes there for researching purposes, but he knows they know that’s complete bullshit. He’s a people person. Always will be. He enjoys being surrounded with fun people and partying the evening and night away. He may be a shadowhunter, but he will never say no to a round of shots and dancing.
The first night he had gotten dirty looks when they saw his runes, and he was ignored by most of them. It was fine with him. He can get down with any crowd. He knew a few vampires, including Raphael who introduced him to a group of vampires and werewolves there. Once they realized he wasn’t there to interrogate or had any shadowhunter gear on, they slowly loosened up and treated him like one of their own.
Safe to say it was weird walking into the club with his gear and runes on display. His throwing stars are hitched on his hips and lower thigh, and they glow in the neon room. His normal acquaintances throw him second glances, hesitance and worry on their pensive faces. They step back, their backs straight and ready for anything as he walks by.
Magnus already lost Cat in the crowd, and he can count on her to scout out the suspects. The only details they have on the High Warlock are black hair, pale skin, and he is slightly taller than Magnus.
The shadowhunter eyes up the taller men, taking note of their clothes. The man has to have either a good or an old taste in clothes, since he’s lived many decades. He also has to be rich based on his age. One doesn’t live for a very long time without learning how to make profit.
Nobody fits the bill, and he’s walked the entire building. Cat finds him in the middle and informs him she’s leaving. The warlock is obviously not here, and they’ll have to get in contact with Clary again if she’s willing. Magnus spots her dancing with a blond boy, Jace. If he wasn’t dressed and armed, he would make sure to shove into him. He’s never been a fan of him, and he hates how he’s immortal and will be a pain in the ass for a long time to come.
Magnus waltzes over to the bar and orders a hard drink for his troubles. Everyone avoids his stare, and he even has to call for the bartender a few times to be serviced. He takes a seat next to a man in a rugged gray sweater. He’s slouched over his drink like he’s protecting it, and he’s got his chin in his hands. A hood covers his hair, and black tufts poke out from underneath. They’re unruly and fluffy, and Magnus really wants to run his fingers through it. The AC in the room blows at the stranger’s hood.
Magnus turns and throws the stranger a wide charming smile, and he makes sure to tongue the thin red straw that’s used to stir his drink. The bartender must not have wanted to be bothered again because his whiskey is stronger than he expects.
“Hi, handsome,” the shadowhunter drawls, placing his chin on his hand and fluttering his lashes. Yup, very strong drink indeed.
The man tenses and gives him a blank stare, and his hazel eyes look Magnus over. Magnus really wishes he brought another set of clothes, especially when the man responds with an unimpressed, “Hi.”
Magnus is not one to give up easily, and he turns his body to face the hot stranger. “What are you drinking?”
The man blinks, appearing to have remembered he had a drink in the first place. He must be sitting right underneath a draft because his hood moves subtly, and he reaches to adjust it. He thumbs his own straw, “I don’t know. Something Meliorn made me.”
Magnus hums, taking a glance at the man’s hands and how large they are. His fingers are long and have an admiring way about them. The alcohol is getting to his head. He treads a thin line when he moves his chair an inch closer, “I’ve been here a lot. Regular customer really. I bet I can guess your drink.”
The man’s mouth twitches in what Magnus hopes to be humor, “Regular customer is an understatement.”
Magnus gapes in humiliation, before realizing what the man just admitted. He throws the stranger a wicked grin, daring to pull a fake piece of a lint off the man’s shoulder. “So you’ve been keeping an eye on me, handsome?”
The man doesn’t answer him right away. Magnus wonders if he’s going too far with this and making the man straightly uncomfortable, but all he does is fidget and straighten his back when Magnus starts playing footsie with him. “You’re, uh, usually wearing more colorful clothing.”
Magnus grins like a cat, becoming more daring and toying with the hood. The stranger’s cheeks are pink and flustered, and he’s always been a sucker for blushing men who don’t know what to do with their hands. His hazel eyes linger over his face, taking longer at his lips.
Magnus chugs the rest of his drink, purposely allowing a few droplets to slide down his chin. The man watches it happen, and his full lips part completely mesmerized. Magnus licks his lips for good measure and stands incredibly close to him. Their shared body heat rises in temperature, and Magnus wishes he would take off his sweater.
He fiddles with a string he finds, eyes never leaving the man, “I can wear whatever you’d like, baby.” The man shivers at his words, pupils enlarging and chest heaving faster as if he’s never been approached so unabashedly before. Shame, really, he’s blushing so pretty.
“Your sweater is cute and all,” Magnus whispers loud enough for only them to hear. “I would much rather see you take it off.” Maybe he’s too tipsy for this because the moment he touches the hood, the man’s hand snatches his wrist firmly. He is about to apologize, but then the man reaches out with his other hand, caressing Magnus’s cheek and bringing their lips together.
The kiss is awkward at first, as Magnus is more than tipsy right now. But once the room stops spinning, he goes all in. He tilts his head, fitting their lips together better and tasting the peach rum on his lips. The flavor is heavenly, and he curses the angels before slipping his tongue into the deepening kiss. The man sighs into his mouth, and Magnus feels uncertain hands on his waist.
Magnus must have climbed into the stranger’s lap because he’s towering over him now. He runs his hands down his chest, feeling the defined muscle hiding underneath. He doesn’t even know this man’s name, but he wants this man under him or on top of him. He’s not picky, and he smells so enticing.
“Hey!” an angry voice calls. “None of that here. I don’t care who you are. You can’t have sex in my bar.”
The man immediately tries to pull away, and Magnus has none of it. He grabs a hand and pulls him out of the chair and towards a hallway. “This way. Come on, beautiful.”
The man obliges and as soon as they’re out of view down the hall, Magnus shoves him into the wall and kisses him. He hears a deep groan, and it makes his legs weak. He needs to hear it again.
Without thinking, he reaches up and tugs on the man’s hair. The man groans, as he runs his fingers through his hair and slightly yanks. The noises he gets in return is encouraging, and he reaches farther up until he feels soft fur.
Wait.
His focus drifts from the kissing to the mass of soft fur twitching under his fingers. He leans back, sliding the hood off the stranger’s head and freezes.
Two cat ears black as their owner’s wild hair twitch and flutter under his gaze. Feeling his staring, they shift and lay flat against his head, hiding entirely in his hair. Magnus thinks of his own cat, Chairman, who lives outside and occasionally feeds when he turns up.
What a precious look on a beautiful man, who pulls his hood back up with a scowl not aimed at Magnus. His cheeks are rosy red and his eyes are downcasted in shame. “I’m sorry - I didn’t mean to let this get that far. Here, I’ll just go-“
“No, no, honeybun,” Magnus stops him gently and cups his heated cheeks. He should really ask for his name. “You are more adorable than I originally thought. What a precious warlock mark. Do you like to have them scratched?”
“I, uh, I don't know-“
“Alec?”
Alaska in January has nothing on the ice that grows throughout Magnus’s entire body the second he hears someone say that name.
Jace stands in the doorway of the hallway, protectiveness showing in the guarded way he’s standing. Magnus turns back to Alec, who refuses to look at him.
“Oh my angels,” Magnus mutters and backs away with his hands up. He curses, “I was just molesting the High Warlock of Brooklyn. Shit.”
Alec’s face hardens, “So what, you worry about titles now? Would you not have approached me if you knew who I was?”
“No!” Magnus scoffs and freezes when Alec gets more pissed. “I mean, uh, shit. I don’t know. You mean you don’t want to hex me?”
“Did I give off that I wanted to hex you?” Alec asks, appalled and annoyed. His fists are clenched and little sparks of purple filter the area around his hand.
“Well…no,” Magnus weakly answers. He runs his fingers through his hair nervously. “No one knew what the High Warlock of Brooklyn looked like, at least no shadowhunter. I didn’t expect you to look the way that you do.”
Alec pinches his nose irritably, “I’m so sorry I didn’t meet your standards.”
“No! I mean,” Magnus sighs. He waves over Alec’s still form, “You’re adorable and cute. I didn’t think…”
“The one correct thing you’ve said tonight,” Jace cuts in. Magnus flips him off.
“Just,” Magnus groans and gets back into Alec’s space. Thankfully, the warlock lets him, but anger still swims in his hazel eyes ready to snap like a coiled snake. “Let me take you out? I really like you. Please let me fix this?”
“Like him? Did you have a conversation I missed somehow?”
Magnus flips Jace off, and Alec throws him a look. “Fuck off. Go be miserable somewhere else, guard dog,” Magnus growls.
“Excuse me?”
“Jace,” Alec scowls before taking a deep breath. “Go. I’ll be right there.”
Magnus smiles wide at Jace when he finally leaves. He turns back to Alec, and the smile turns genuine. “Please? You just surprised me. I do like you, and you’re very cute.”
Alec blushes and nods a moment later, “Fine. I’ll text you my address.”
Magnus watches him leave before calling out, “You don’t have my phone number.”
Alec waves his hand, forming purple swirls in the air. There’s a grin on his face when he answers, “I got it.”

Honestly, it’s kinda obvious that enemies to lovers is THE best trope. Maybe not, but it’s definitely up there.
It’s also kind of obvious why it fits malec so well
They’re both such opposites. Born on opposite sides. The Angelic warrior and the Demon’s child.
They were meant to hate each other. But they don’t.
Under the cut are a few stories where they do dislike each other - and then fall in love anyway
The Greatest Trick in the World by @cuubism - magician Magnus and skeptical journalist Alec
Take Me to Church - by @khaleesiofalicante - architects Magnus and Alec, and a joint project
of midnight visitors and unlikely allies - by @high-warlock-of-brooklyn - Alec knocks on Magnus’s door one midnight
Between The Lines - by msalexiscrisis - Cop Alec Lightwood and the ever elusive con artist Magnus Bane
Love to Hate You - by MissYouSoFar - Shadowhunters Alec and Magnus, midnight patrols, and a whole lot of sexual tension
In My Veins - by Larrylover3000 - Med students AU, Magnus and Alec get paired up on a group project
A Weakness for the Pretty Things - by SolarisRasa - Downworld leader Magnus Bane who captures the new Head of the NY Institute
Detest, Demise, Desire - by @dustandducks - Vampire hunter Magnus who gets hired by the Lightwoods, a family of vampires
Masters of War - by Lecrit - Human AU, Magnus and Alec hate each other from the first night, until they don’t.
Ammonia and Magic - by Queenie18 - Shadowhunter Alec gets captured by The Great Destruction, the son of a Prince of Hell
(For some reason, tumblr isn’t letting me paste the links to the last two, so sorry about that! :(( )

Okay I definitely plan on writing this buuuut
Malec Supervillains AU
It’s a sci-fi pic, and it’s set in a futuristic world where all of the shadow races exist, but there’s some sci-fi-ish explanation for all of them. Vampires and werewolves are the result of two separate zombie apocalypses, warlocks from a freak nuclear accident years ago, Shadowhunters from experiments to create the perfect soldier. Faeries have been around for centuries and no one knows how they came about, and they live in secret cities that no one has access to.
Magnus and Alec meet in a bar one night, and instantly feel a connection to each other. As if they’ve known each other a long time. But whenever they try to get close, someone gets in between - either Alec’s siblings, or one of Magnus’s friends. Neither of the groups give a proper explanation about why they don’t want them to be together.
But Magnus and Alec still meet in secret, and slowly, strange things come to light. Both Magnus and Alec have a memory gap of the same length of time, caused in both cases by an “accident” three months ago. People react strangely to seeing Magnus and Alec together in public. Magnus’s magic reacts to Alec’s touch, drawing strength from him and becoming stronger. Neither knows why.
When one of their public sightings somehow results in a police chase, Magnus and Alec are rescued by the Fae who take them to one of their cities. There, Magnus and Alec find out that they’re heroes to the Faeries - and villains to the rest of the world.
They had protected the faeries from some threat, but fighting the same threat had resulted in many deaths that malec had been blamed for. And, as per the recent crime laws, their memories were erased and they were let back out into the world with measures to ensure they would never meet again.
The rest of the story is basically malec figuring out their backstory, what happened in the time they both forgot, why they became villains - and when they do, how they complete the mission they’d started :)
Like I said, I definitely plan on writing this, but the plot has a lot of polishing to do rn

bludgeonings of chance
Chapter 1 of 2 (Chapter 2)
Malec | Rated general | tw canon-typical and hunger-games-typical violence
Day 14: Failed escape | “I’ll be right behind you.”
Summary: “Your precious rebellion won’t last long when it sees its two best leaders trying to kill each other in the Games.”
aka my Hunger-Games-inspired AU, ft. Malec being in love, lots of angst, and a mandatory happy ending.
A/N: omg guys I'm posting today's fic ON TIME FOR ONCE—
Read it on AO3 or below the cut.
The City of Glass, the First City, the Nephilim’s precious Alicante, shone bright in the afternoon sunlight.
Standing on a hill beside the city, though, Magnus’ eyes didn’t linger on the glass towers or graceful buildings, so different from Idris’ five other cities. Instead, he focused on the barred entrance to Alicante’s dungeons.
Alec came up beside him as he stood there, and came to a stop at his side. “Seen anything?”
“The guards rotate every four hours,” Magnus told him. “Two at this entrance, probably two at each corner. The prisoners for the Games are on the other side of the prisons, pretty heavily guarded; our first priority will have to be the ordinary prisoners.”
“As we suspected,” Alec said with a small sigh. Magnus knew he wanted to free everyone, but that wasn’t always practical. “We’ll have to see how it’s going once we’re in.”
Magnus nodded. “Tonight.”
~
Magnus and Alec’s temporary camp, just beyond the peak of the hill so that they were out of sight of the city, was quiet that evening.
Breaking out the fifty or so prisoners in the First City’s dungeons was dangerous, but necessary. Nearly all of those fifty were, like Magnus and Alec, members of the Seventh City — the secret resistance movement which aimed to overthrow Alicante. Unless the prisoners were freed, the Seventh City would lose a fair portion of its people and its secrets might be endangered, which was an unacceptable risk for an organisation that worked on a need-to-know basis.
But thanks to Alicante’s security measures, such a breakout would be dangerous for the breakers-out. In fact, Magnus and Alec had realised that it would be nearly impossible for any team they could put together to get in, overpower every guard they encountered, and get out safely with all the prisoners — the disturbance would bring every soldier in Alicante down upon their heads. The only way was if the team sent in was small enough to go unnoticed until the prisoners were out of their cells, and still capable of keeping the guards away until the prisoners were out of the prison entirely. A large group would set off alarms and be trapped before they could escape; a small group would be unable to defend the prisoners on the way out.
Unless the small group was particularly powerful, which was why Magnus and Alec had decided to come on the mission. Not only was Magnus the most powerful warlock in the Seventh City, but he and Alec fought together with terrifying ease — they clicked in battle as they did in everything else, and they were far stronger together than they were apart. The two of them were the prisoners’ best shot.
Izzy, Jace, Cat, Raphael, and Ragnor had all protested, but Alec led the Nephilim contingent of the Seventh City and Magnus not only led the warlocks, but was respected by all the Downworlders. Their family and friends couldn’t stop them from doing what was necessary.
Still, the fact remained that Magnus and Alec might not make it back, and they didn’t talk much throughout the afternoon and evening.
When night fell, Alec pulled Magnus into a kiss, and they headed off towards Alicante.
~
The dungeons were divided into seven sections — one for the prisoners for the Games, and then one for each of Idris’ six cities. Like the cities, the Nephilim segment of the prisons was nicer and less oppressive than the others. The segment for faeries was full of iron; silver glinted on the werewolves’ section; religious symbols decorated the vampires’; the warlock segment had magic-suppressing cuffs hanging from the walls. The segment for mundanes was plainer and less well guarded, but dark and crowded; mundanes were after all the most numerous group, and Alicante filled its prisons with all the city’s Sighted mundanes.
Magnus was only half-focused on his surroundings, the other half maintaining the complex spell required to hide their presence — not just from sight and sound, but also magically, since alarms would go off if the sensors detected warlock magic here. The spell was near-impossible without centuries of practice; Magnus was the only one in the Seventh City capable of holding it for long.
Alec was keeping a lookout for him, and had guided them along the route they’d planned out to avoid guards. Now, though, they were directly in front of the cells where the prisoners were kept, which meant that the most dangerous part of the operation was about to begin.
At the same time as Magnus dropped the concealment spell, Alec sent arrows into the guards standing nearest to them, then took their steles and traced the rune to unlock every cell in each of the segments. Alarms blared, washing the halls in flashing red lights; the noise level of the prisoners abruptly increased. “Follow us,” Magnus called out, amplifying his voice so that it could be clearly heard above the hubbub.
The chase began.
Guards poured in in spurts from other hallways, and Magnus killed them as they came with controlled bursts of magic; Alec took out those he missed with arrows, unerringly accurate as always. The crowd of prisoners had to be shepherded along, and several were weak and stumbling, but so far, they were managing to keep the guards away.
Still, the stream of guards was increasing, and Magnus exchanged a glance with Alec. They were only halfway out; the prisoners needed more time. Magnus knew he could give it to them; Alec knew what he planned, and clearly hated it.
“Go on,” Magnus said. “I’ll be right behind you.”
“You better be,” Alec told him, and then he was off, chivvying the prisoners along while Magnus stayed behind in the midst of a growing crowd of guards.
Magnus waited one moment — another — until Alec was out of sight, and then he thrust out his hands. Magic leapt to his command, free to kill with all the viciousness he had to restrain around his allies, and the guards dropped like flies.
More came around corners and approached, but warily; his outburst of magic had frightened them. It’d also bring all the guards towards Magnus, which had been the intention — more guards attacking Magnus meant fewer guards attacking Alec and the prisoners. Hopefully, he could delay them long enough for the prisoners to get free — and hopefully he’d be able to follow Alec out, afterwards.
The next wave of guards was too many for him to kill easily, though, which meant he needed to move. There were two options: the hallway to the left, leading to the exit, leading to Alec; and a hallway on the right, leading deeper into the dungeons.
If Magnus followed Alec, then the guards would follow too, and they might catch up with the prisoners before they escaped. If Magnus took the other hallway, there was every chance he wouldn’t find an exit in time — it was Alec who knew this place, not Magnus.
Desperate times, desperate measures.
I’m sorry, Alexander, Magnus thought, and turned right.
~
The guards followed.
Magnus killed them with blasts of magic, but his power was finite, especially amidst all the adamas that coated Alicante, and the guards seemed infinite. No matter; they were after him, not Alec and the prisoners, and that was the most important thing.
He didn’t know if Alec had escaped yet, if they’d made it out; he hoped Alec wouldn’t risk himself trying to wait for Magnus. All he could do was fight on, taking turn after turn at random, killing all the guards he could. Eventually, he’d be overwhelmed, but until then, he would destroy as many of them as possible.
Then, Magnus saw something that made him stop short: a red-fletched arrow protruding from one of the guards’ necks.
The guard fell, and Magnus saw Alec, bow raised another arrow already flying through the air. He sent a blast of magic at the guards approaching from behind Alec, then turned and knocked back the guards following him, which gave him time to run up to Alec. “What are you doing here?”
“Looking for you,” Alec said, perfectly calm, and sent another volley of arrows over Magnus’ shoulder. Magnus launched back into the battle, magic twisting around Alec’s weapons like two sides of a coin. They always did fight better together.
“You are ridiculous,” Magnus told Alec, ducking so that Alec could fire an arrow through the space where he’d been a moment earlier.
“You said you’d follow me,” Alec returned with a huff. “You weren’t showing up, so I got the prisoners free and sent them off before coming back for you.”
“You shouldn’t have,” Magnus said. “There are too many of them.”
Alec didn’t reply because another wave of guards descended upon them, but Magnus saw his lips compress — he couldn’t deny the truth of that.
~
Alicante’s many clock towers were tolling midnight when Magnus and Alec were dragged, bloody and chained and beaten, into Consul Dieudonné’s office.
Inquisitor Valentine Morgenstern was there, too, which only made sense — everyone knew he held the real power here. Dieudonné sat in silence while Morgenstern stalked forward.
“Alec Lightwood and Magnus Bane,” he said coldly. “I’d say I’m impressed, but you’ve lost now, so I don’t think I will.”
Magnus grinned despite the blood in his mouth. “We killed a good many of your guards, Morgenstern. Don’t sound too superior.”
Valentine’s backhand caught him full on the face, and Alec hissed his fury as Magnus’ head snapped sideways. The blow stung, but Magnus ignored it and smiled insolently at the Inquisitor.
“You have, however, undermined our authority,” Morgenstern went on. “And that must be repaired — preferably in the upcoming Brocelind Games.” He paused, a small smirk ticking up the corner of his mouth. “I think it’ll do you two good to play this year. We’ve never had a Nephilim in the arena before, but this one’s been so corrupted by bedding a Downworlder that he barely counts.” The smirk widened into something dark and gleeful. “Your precious rebellion won’t last long when it sees its two best leaders trying to kill each other in the Games.”
~
Of all the First City’s methods of suppressing the other five, the Brocelind Games were the cruelest.
The rules were few. Twenty prisoners from Alicante’s dungeons were thrown into an arena together. The last one left alive would receive an official pardon from the Consul himself.
It was broadcast to every city except the Mortal City, where mundanes were left in the dark about the existence of the other races. In Alicante, the Games were watched with avid interest; the entire population did almost nothing except place bets on winners for the duration of the Games.
For equality’s sake, the numbers of prisoners from each city were different. Magnus could remember when there’d been two from each, but the warlocks kept teaming up and killing everyone else, then killing each other, which was apparently too anticlimatic for watchers (and caused difficulties with the bets). So now there was only one warlock, representing the City of Lilith; two faeries, from the City of the Fair; three vampires for the City of Night; four werewolves from the City of the Moon; and ten mundanes from the Mortal City.
And, this year, there would be a twenty-first competitor: a Shadowhunter.
Magnus didn’t know who the other competitors would be, but there would likely be at least one from the Seventh City. He’d have to kill people he knew, people who’d followed him as a leader of the Seventh City.
Worse, he would be pitted against Alec.
That was why Valentine had put them both in the Games; that was why he’d changed the rules to admit a Shadowhunter. He wanted the world to see the Seventh City’s best hopes fighting to the death in the arena — to watch their last hopes be extinguished.
Valentine knew what they were to each other — everyone had heard of Alec Lightwood, son of Valentine’s closest followers, who’d betrayed them all for a Downworlder he’d fallen in love with. When Alec had chosen Magnus, it had made Magnus hope for the first time in far too long; it had made the downtrodden of this world hope again, and the Seventh City had grown dramatically in the following years from both Shadowhunter and Downworlder recruits. If they killed each other in the arena, that hope would die out like a candle flame in the wind.
The Seventh City could survive Magnus’ death; he didn’t know if it could survive Alec’s. Magnus wouldn’t survive Alec’s death, either.
He’d kill himself first, if that was what it took to get Alec pardoned.

AU where Valentine died in the Uprising...
Most of the Circle members, including Valentine, are killed. The Lightwoods are still sent to the New York Institute as punishment & Jocelyn (plus Luke) is still living in the city w/Clary
Jocelyn returns the Mortal Cup to Idris
Pangborn & Blackwell leave "Jonathan"/Sebastian (here he'll be called "Fabian") at the Geneva Institute as a toddler
Hodge "finds" baby!Jace in New York, where he's taken in by the Lightwoods (so we still have our fabulous trio)
Fabian receives dreams from Lilith, who claims to be his mother. He has his blood tested at a Shadow Market & realizes that he does, in fact, have some demon blood. He runs away, afraid of what the Shadowhunters might do if they found out
My OC, Jas, loses her father at 15 & reluctantly has Magnus take her to Idris, where she grows up w/her uncle Michael Wayland & his son Jonathan
Fabian grows up hunting independently & becomes cold but not entirely heartless. He finds the Fray residence
Simon & Clary grow up together as mundanes, until Clary is told the truth by her brother. She ends up training at the New York Institute
Thinking Malec happens not long after the Lightwoods need help w/something (so Alec meets Magnus then) & Alec realizes that Jace is attracted to Clary
Jas visits the New York Institute, curious to know what her father's parabatai & former friend is like
At some point, Imogen Herondale (Jace's grandma) TELLS Jace who he is, because that part of City of Ashes made me scream--
What doesn't happen:
The Mortal Cup is kept as a tarot card til 2007
Valentine has time to traumatize Jace & Sebastian
The Waylands are killed
Ithuriel is imprisoned in Wayland Manor when Valentine decides to move in & use it as a base
Simon becomes a vampire, then a Daylighter, then a recipient of the Mark of Cain & finally an Ascended Shadowhunter
So similar, but slightly more happy.

Just me spitballing a Malec reverse au re-write kinda thing
Reverse AU, featuring my chaotic brain process whenever I try to figure stuff out.
Okay, Malec, because of course Malec.
And reversed roles, but also not just reversed roles, because they aren't carbon copies of each other, so I need to make things different, while not making them too different.
Also, if I want Malec as the two main characters, I might have to "extend" their significance? But then again, wouldn't that just make them Mary Sue-ish? And do I care about that?
Okay, so warlock Alec and shadowhunter Magnus. But not simply swapping places, because they are not simply the same person.
So how about we try, Magnus is not HOTI or acting HOTI. Alec might be high warlock, though.
Magnus is the son of the circle founder, but that's his mother. (Since canon didn't give any info on her I can use her as I want).
I still want Asmodeus to be Magnus' father, but I also want Magnus to not have magic, which he would if Asmodeus was a demon.
So how about at the time of Magnus being conceived, Asmodeus was still an arch angel, and sleeping with the shadowhunter was actually the thing that made him fall.
(though at first, no one knows about all that)
(or, well, no one knows about the Asmodeus thing, but that Magnus is the son of the traitor shadowhunter who made the circle is widely known.)
Magnus is openly bisexual, likes to rub his "life-style" into his superior's faces, and is known to favor downworlders (though is often mistrusted by them, because of who his mother is)
Alec is the son of a high ranking demon, don't know which one, though. (could actually even go all the way up to Satan, but that might be too op?)
Or go the other way around. His demonic parent wasn't all that powerful, but Alec has spent most of his immortal life training his magical ability to be more powerful, and so has achieved his own status. Kinda.
Gotta think about this.
So, yeah, unsure about Alec's specific origins.
Makeshift family with Izzy, Jace, Max, no blood relation whatsoever, though.
Max could be the newest member of the family. Jace a vampire, because my brain thinks it's funny if he can't see his reflection. Izzy a fellow warlock, who specializes in another field than Alec, who is more battle oriented with his magic, while Izzy is more interested in the variety of magic.
Clary could be a seelie, Jace could at one point drink Magnus' (extra angel) blood and become a day walker
Then Simon could be the new shadowhunter on the block, though it is questionable if there needs to be that whole complicated backstory with blocked sight and stolen memories… maybe a psychological reaction from onset trauma as a child, that then stabilized over the years, so that he was able to rejoin the shadow world…. Gotta think of this one,too
Magnus and Raphael would be best friends and shadowhunting partners, but not parabatai. (partly because I'm not a big fan of the parabatai bond in general, and partly because I get the vibe that Raphael and Magnus are the kinda people who strife to become good partners without runic assistence.)
The NY institute could actually be the place where the Clave sends its troublemakers, aka anyone who doesn't conform to their ways. (anyone not straight, etc)
Which could lead to the institute being pretty understaffed, (because why have lots of shadowhunters in an institute if you only ever make use of the same 4 people to take care of everything?)
Ragnor would make a good HOTI. I like the thought of Ragnor as HOTI. He would be in a perpetual state of being exasperated and fond of the shadowhunters under his command. (Magnus most of all)
I don't know where to put Luke.
So, meeting between Malec. ...
Maybe something more indirect that leads up to it?
Okay, so the family unit that is Alec, Izzy and Max (and Jace), move to New York.
(maybe the rumor mill goes something like shadowhunters in NY being more easy going with the downworld, or something. Or just that there are less shadowhunters in NY than in other places).
And since Max has had a particularly bad experience and is still so young, they decide that he would benefit from the new environment. And maybe Andrew is the high warlock in new york, but he wants a vacation, so he is all too happy to shove that responsibility into Alec's capable hands.
And then Magnus and his team need to close a rift, so they contact the high warlock, but Alec is with the vamp clan, to help Jace move in or something. So then Izzy goes in his stead.
But unbeknownst to anyone, Max follows them. Because he doesn't trust the shadowhunters not to hurt his "sister".
Closing the rift drains Izzy, and as she collapses, Raphael catches her. Max, who has been spying from a hidden place, can't help but see his sister in danger, and his magic reacts.
But he doesn't have great control, and his emotional turmoil makes like a fire spiral form around him. Izzy's magic is too depleted to try and control the fire, Max is panicking which makes the flames grow ever higher and higher.
So Magnus chucks his jacket and jumps through the fire spiral. There are some tense seconds, before the gathered people can hear the sounds of singing (?) (like a lullabye or something).
And then the firey spiral slows down and shrinks, until they can see (a slightly singed) Magnus rocking young Max and singing to him to calm him down.
Magnus and Raphael (plus Maia and Dot?) keep this little tidbit out of the report, no need to tell the higher ups that there is a warlock child who can't yet properly control his magic.
Alec learns of it all later from both Izzy and Max, and seeks out Magnus to thank him/get a read on him.
(I do like the image of Magnus jumping through fire to calm down a hysterical child, not gonna lie. And then Raphael hitting him over the head for not activating his fire resistence rune first.)
Also, whenever there is a clave envoy sent to visit the institute, Magnus makes sure to put on extra makeup and sparkly jewelry. And wear a t-shirt with a bisexual pun.
His fashion sense normally abhorrs those shirts, but if those stuck up homophobes make an appearance, he needs them to know that he "Likes his women like he likes his men"
And I have actually no real idea for actual plot..... so this is pretty much worthless. *insert rofl emoji here*
