Federico let Marco push him on the bed, unsteady on his feet, and looked up at him from the mattress with an uneven breath, his lips swollen from kisses and his pupils blown. Marco got rid of his shoes and got on top of him, the boy arching up his back for friction.

Marco was about to touch him, to do everything he had thought to do to him since he first saw him, then he did the most difficult thing he had ever done and stopped.

“What happened?” Federico asked, annoyed and confused because he stopped so suddenly.

“It happened that you’re Alice’s boyfriend, idiot.”

“Alice cheated on me. She’s not my girlfriend anymore.”

“And you’re drunk. I don’t do this kind of stuff with drunk kids.”

“I am nineteen, I am not a kid.”

Marco did not say that was the most childish reply he’d ever heard. “But you’re drunk.”

“And what so?”

“And so you can’t consent,” he said, gaining some strength back and getting on his feet.

And there is more humanity left in him, although skewed and messy, than in them and he blames himself for not making them better, not making them good enough. If he had done things right Hector wouldn't have had to hurt them, if he hadn't been so soft on them they would have learned earlier and maybe, maybe they would have been okay.

I am FASCINATED by that line in #50 where Jake says "You know why I was in charge in the first place, Cassie? Because once upon a time, a long time ago, Marco said I was.” [emphasis added] Okay, yes, Doylisticly it's probably a continuity error. Tobias declaring Jake the leader was 49 books ago and all.

But in-universe, it says something about how much the team dynamics have shifted by that point in the series. Tobias hasn't believed in Jake The Hero since the first book. He's the first to question Jake's decisions (e.g. #11, #16) and calls Jake out for excluding Cassie more than anyone else in #51 - 53. He knows and resents the fact that Jake "worries about [him] more than anyone" (#22) hates having to rely on Jake (#3), repeatedly sides with Toby against Jake (#23, #34, #47), and hates Jake's habit of putting their friends in danger (#11, #26, #33, etc). Tobias and Jake are also in a uniquely awkward position at that point: "We'd almost traded places. Tobias the orphan suddenly had a mother. Jake, the poster boy for the all-American nuclear family, was alone. Living in somebody else's house, the way I'd always had to" (#49).

Marco, on the other hand, has never been more pro-Jake. Marco has, by his own standards, already won the war: "my mom was back. Happy she and my dad were still nauseatingly in love... I practically had to tie myself to a tree to keep from running up and down the valley, arms spread wide, belting out show tunes" (#51). He's utterly confident that "Jake knows these things," that "Jake's our general" that Jake will win them the war (#51). NOBODY ELSE (except maybe Eva) still thinks this about Jake as of #51, least of all Jake himself. But Marco (and Eva) got those rose-colored glasses because Jake already pulled off killing Visser One.

Which is an interesting reversal from #1, where Tobias insists "you're the leader, Jake" and Marco laughs in Jake's face when he tries to lead, saying "This is reality. You don't know anything about reality, Jake. Nothing bad has ever really happened to you" (#1). How things change, over 3 years and a few hundred hopeless battles.

I think your math is a little off there anon, Law is 26 NOW, he was 24 when he met Luffy in Sabaody

I was kinda uncomfy with the age gap at the beginning too but idk it’s really grown on me a lot especially now that A. They’re both consenting adults B. Have a really fun dynamic and relationship and HISTORY together (Luffy beat up a Warlord Law spent 13 years thirsting for revenge over there’s gotta be SOME special feelings about that) C. Is one of the most adored and popular ships in the fandom and D. It’s fictional bro…the gay pirate anime is not real…

Also I’m 99.9% sure they’re not related. Having a D in their name relates to a shared destiny of being enemies of god AKA the Celestial Dragons rather than actual blood ties. If people with D in their names were blood related that would probably be bad considering two of them had a child together (points at Roger and Rouge). Also there’s characters from different races that have a D in their name as well (Jaguar).

Considering there’s other really popular ships in the fandom with even bigger age gaps (looks at Ace/Marco. Ace was 20. Marco’s 45 😬) I’m really not worried about Lawlu lol
