Just as I love picture books that are nothing more than sheer, silly entertainment, I also have a weakness for those that, within an age-appropriate framework, challenge expectations and introduce unexpected new concepts, recognizing the neuroplasticity of the young brain and the incredible ability toddlers and preschoolers have to absorb new ideas. One of the very first books I reviewed here was "Stack the Cats" by the wonderful author-illustrator Susie Ghahremani, and her follow-up, "Balance the Birds" (2018) is just as fantastic! Described as "a book of weight, size, and logic," it introduces the idea of relative size through the cleverness of birds balancing on branches, in bold colours that are a delight to look at. Aziraphale and Crowley made the theory that the Archangel Michael was the one who took Gabriel's memories away. Gabriel found it hard to accept, considering how he and Michael were supposedly close. The reality was disappointing and frustrating.

An Enigmatic Wedding by CloverTheGrand (T)

A year after Armageddidn't, Crowley and Aziraphale receive an invitation from Heaven and Hell-- an invitation to the wedding of Lucifer Morningstar and Archangel Michael. Since Heaven and Hell had vowed to be a lot more diplomatic with each other, a wedding was planned in order to unite both sides. It was a solution apparently everyone below and up high agreed would be beneficial.

Adam Young agreed to visit the wedding so that he may put a stop to whatever plan Heaven and Hell had, and Aziraphale and Crowley accompanied him there because frankly enough, Adam was still just a child. After everything Heaven and Hell put them through, they could not find themselves trusting either side too much. Which was perhaps why they couldn't help but notice the lies rampant throughout the wedding's prologue that alluded to a bigger plot at work.

But the more they come to investigate all this, the more they realise just how complicated both Heaven and Hell could be.

Lucifer hated Michael. He hated her in a way that could only have started as love. Any affection that he felt for her had turned into fury, rage, and hatred during the Fall. But he still lusted for her. He wanted her. But more importantly, he wanted her to suffer as he took his pleasure from her. Physically and metaphysically.

But they were not destined to fight again for six thousand years. And that was a long time to wait, burning with hatred and lust.

Then a demon returned from Eden, the scent of an angel still clinging to him. It wasn't Michael's scent, but it was close enough. He didn't want to wait six thousand years for his need for vengeance and other baser urges to be fulfilled. Not when he had an available substitute at hand. If Crawley was foolish enough to take shelter under the wing of an angel and return to Hell with the scent still on him, then he would simply have to pay for that mistake.

Lucifer wanted Michael and he could pretend that's who he had.
