Three Days of Happiness
Book review:
Tumblr media
A light novel set slightly past the school scene but heavily overshadowed by its spectre. It's a contemporary urban fantasy featuring regrets, unrequited relationships and a supernaturally appointed minder to ensure a condemned MC does not go off the rails before the appointed time. Also known by the alternate and appropriately downer title of "I Sold My Lifespan for 10,000 Yen Per Year".
Kusonoki is ready to end it all. An unhappy high school life has been followed by unhappy employment. Poverty and lack of future prospects have him prepared to give up at the ripe old age of, um, twenty. Depression isn't exactly a rational beast. While pawning off his belongings, he hears of a shop that pays for intangibles such as lifespan.
This is where the novel sharply veers off from any realistic slice of life that it could have been. Suffice to say that the shop is not metaphorical. Compounding his dire self-esteem, Kusonoki is quoted a ridiculously low remuneration for his remaining lifespan. While this may possibly have been construed as a subtle deterrence, Kusonoki is later made helpfully prescient of the future history behind the low valuation as well as the pathetic circumstances of his premature demise.
It is possible to guess some of the ending but not all of it. How it arrives at the conclusion is also reasonably original. Befitting an easy read, this light novel features an extremely uncluttered cast. There are barely three main characters and the very rare side character. Author, Sugaru Miaki is probably more recently known for Parasite in Love (not related to Parasyte nor Parasite, 2019 Korea) but some earlier stories seemingly bear more similarities to Three Days of Happiness, youth regrets and do-overs.

The classroom began to buzz with conversation. But I didn't take part in any of it. To be exact, I couldn't.

Valeur.
