More modern atla featuring Azula’s breakdown.

When I drew this, I imagined both Zuko and Azula were living with Iroh and Azula just had a middle of the night break down and chopped her hair like she does in the show (except this time she gets support afterward).

She bursts into the hallway where she runs into Zuko who has no clue how to react. Iroh hears the commotion, steps into the hallways and handles it.

The next day he takes her to get her hair cut. Later, the girls have a sleepover and dye her hair (she’s wearing white (funeral colours) during this because it’s the rebirth of her new self 🗣️)

Azula of course acts grumpy and bitter about this, but the last slide is her on her own leaning on the bathroom counter looking in the mirror, happy with the results (she’s also wearing Ty Lee’s clothes because hers got stained with dye).

Blue hair because her fire is blue and I like to think blue is a colour that is more accurately representative of her than the red she starts the story in that represents her family

Iron can prove that zuko mentioned Mai to him more than once during the three years he spent in exile arresting the Avatar. And I'm starting to think zuko's hair looks pretty good in season one, too:)

Zuko and Azula in "The Beach"

Lately I think a lot about "The Beach" episode [x], especially about this small detail of great teamwork Zuko and Azula have during the game.

Zuko is looking ahead, directly facing their rivals (who had the control of the ball at this moment) but his body is clearly lowered to the ground, left hand most likely touching the ground, legs bent and widely spaced - a clear contrast to Mai standing near and how he stood before on two separate occasions

which is why I think Zuko willingly create an opportunity for Azula, so she could jump higher - something she definitely used to their team’s advantage. If Azula simply jumped on her brother’s back when he wasn’t expecting it or wasn’t ready, he would probably just fall face down from the impact but as the scene shows, he had no such problem nor was angry about it in the following scenes.

During the game sequences there was no dialogue shown between our protagonists, so it is hard to determine if Azula in advance called Zuko to give her a “lift” or Zuko offered on his own, or did they were that much in sync they just acted without thinking. Regardless I like this few seconds long interaction, because for me it implies how they trusted each other despite all the rivalry and bitterness from previous episodes. Like Zuko trusted Azula won’t use that moment to hurt/humiliate him by overuse of force, the same as Azula trusted in Zuko’s strength and that he won’t mess up by losing his balance. It is a small thing but no less sweet to see them working well together when fighting for the same goal - what reminds me a bit their teamwork from the previous season finale.

Interestingly, it was also the second time Zuko assisted Azula in scoring against their rivals while not scoring himself any point on screen. The first time happened almost right at the beggining of the game (second from total five sequences)

while each girl have the solo sequence of winning a point:

Azula's first attack,

later Ty Lee landing on the net

and Mai kicking the ball (and presumably scoring)

while Zuko’s two actions are shared only with his younger sister while there is no sense of competition between the siblings, something contrasting a lot with some previous and later episodes.

Azula is bossy and competitive through most of the episode and her brother lets her be that without a complaint. Azula and Zuko get along pretty well and A) do not argue (with the exception of the campfire scene and then they argue not even for the whole scene itself) and B) don't get on each nerves the way they do in the palace, with Ozai's presence looming in the back of their mind. I absolutely adore this episode, as it humanizes all our Fire Nation characters by showing them as teenagers outside the war zone but also giving us a bit of insight into what Azula and Zuko could be if Ozai didn't pit them against each other. And they could be a great team!

AU concept

zuko leaves his mission early or is sent away due to the severity of his injuries, azula is there for whatever reason and they end up stuck together in dense forests of outer fire nation islands for some time

i like to think it's in hira'a and ursa or ikem finds them eventually

"I don't want to fight anymore," Zuko mumbled a long time after he finally collapsed.

Azula, watching him from above, was not surprised. "You shouldn't have fought to begin with."

He didn't move, didn't adjust his eyes to look at her. Staring straight up, flat on the grass, he lay completely limp. His body was beyond battered — no inch of his skin hadn't a trace of blood, dirt, or bruising. Cuts and scrapes marred his arms and face, some probably-serious wounds from wild animals along his torso.

All because he insisted on fighting instead of her.

"You're younger than me," he'd said. "You're only eleven. I don't want you in danger like this."

The memory angered her. "Why even try to keep me safe? I'm stronger than you."

"I didn't want you to get hurt."

"I wouldn't."

"Mm..."

Zuko closed his eyes and stopped talking.

Azula watched him carefully, not close enough to register any movement.

"Are you dead?" she asked lightly.

"No," he replied. "I'm just sleepy."

"Well, don't die in your sleep."

"I'll try not to."

He finally looked at her, face twitching. That might've been a pathetic attempt at a smile, the way his lips moved there. She couldn't tell.

"Come lay down," he requested.

"No. I'm not tired."

"You still need rest."

Hesitantly, she kneeled beside him.

With her in reach enough for him to do so, he pulled her into his arms, wrapping himself around her like he would when they were trying not to get caught up playing in the middle of the night.

"Don't die," she said again, finally able to hear his terrifyingly unsteady breathing.

"I'm not gonna die," he said, sounding somewhat exasperated. Just a little bit of her brother's personality returned with that tone, peeking out from behind crushing exhaustion and excruciating pain.

Azula looked up at his face. The completely mutilated half that still smelled of charcoal and infection first, then the untouched half that was paler than a porcelain doll and much dirtier than she'd ever seen one.

She frowned.

Day 1: Zuko / Mai.

No matter how grown up, strong, and independent Izumi is, she will always be Zuko and Mai's little bread.

Another one of the paintings I did this week, was playing around with lighting and felt like painting Zuko, so I did. :D (oh yeah - and a close up if you're interested - you can see the sketch lines if you squint, but I reckon that's part of the charm~ *smiles innocently)
