Sims In Bloom: Generation 2 Pt. 184 (Making Time For Friends)

Before the end of his first weekend back home, Ash was playing fetch in the yard with Gord when two of his classmates at Brindleton Bay School came to visit. Scotti Holiday and Arun Kalani arrived in the afternoon, greeting their friend with warm hugs.

"Our parents said you were home and we had to see it for ourselves," announced Scotti, the eldest daughter of Travis Scott and Summer Holiday. "You don't look more like a Landgraab after a year in the city."

"Uh thanks...I think?"

"Same old Ash Landgraab," she mused. "It's good to see you again, Ashy."

"My Aunt Hazel doesn't even call me Ashy anymore," he said.

"Speaking of name changes, did you hear this guy changed the spelling of his own name? Now he's A-r-u-n, but before you left he was A-r-r-o-n. Who does that?!"

Arun, the eldest son of Zoe Patel and Mitchell Kalani, scowled. "My mom said when I was born she felt like she needed to make the name on my birth certificate sound more Brindletonian, but she spelled Aaron wrong, too! My name is the one she wanted me to have in the first place, Scotti."

Scotti Holiday was still a mean girl, especially as she inched closer to teenhood, but Arun Kalani wasn't exactly a great influence, either. As soon as he walked inside to use the bathroom, Conrad caught the little klepto trying to steal some artwork off the family's wall.

"Arun Kalani, the precinct isn't going to need to keep an eye on you, will they?"

Arun grimaced, foiled in the thrill of the steal. "No, Captain Gordon. I'm sorry."

Lavender kept to herself while Ash hung out with his friends, doing yoga in the backyard until Gord interrupted her for a hug. (Backed up on laundry don't mind the mess!)

Gord knew Lavender disliked large groups, and even though the friendly dog loved scritches from any stranger willing to give them, some of his favourites came from the girl he'd loved and protected from the day she was born.

Lavender loved all the pets. Even Queen Cupcake, the most aloof of the bunch loved Lavender's attention, and she was often content to spend her time after homework and violin practice hanging out with her four-legged friends.

But she also made time for her closest human friend, Barrett Hecking, who came by to hang out after school sometimes. Even when it rained, Lavender convinced him to cloudgaze in the mud.

"The rain keeps hitting our faces," he complained, but he followed her lead as she told a story about the skies leaking water to keep all the strays happy.

"Do you think the water knows when it has to fall?" Barrett wondered.

Lavender thought about it, pursing her lips into a curious grin. "I think so," she agreed.

It was still raining when they went inside, and Barrett didn't want to put away his umbrella. "Is your roof leaking?"

"That's not the roof. My baby brother's room is upstairs."

"So then why is it raining?"

"It's not raining that hard in here. You probably don't need your umbrella."

"I just put the blue streaks in. They'll wash out!"

"It's cool your dads let you put dye in your hair. My parents say I'm too young."

"We're the same age."

Lavender shrugged from the kitchen table. "That's what they said."

And the kids weren't the only ones making time for friends; Heather was at home with Emi Kudo when her sister Hazel popped by unannounced.

"Sorry it's been too long since I've been around. The cafe's really busy and so is getting everything ready for Alex's mayoral campaign."

"Has anyone declared to run against him yet?"

Hazel nodded. "That's why I'm here. J Huntington, who runs Bay Landgraab Security, filed papers the other day. We need volunteers to canvas and door knock to make sure J and his heavies at the security company don't intimidate people who plan to vote for Alex Goth."

"I'll help however I can. J's guys can't intimidate the whole town, can they?"

"We hope they can't."

Hazel glanced at Emi, whom she'd never met before, and Heather remembered to introduce them. "Emi used to be a vet tech here in Brindleton Bay, but she moved to Evergreen Harbour before I bought the clinic. Her husband did the recent remodel! She's out for her dog's annual checkup and to thank me and Holly for suggesting her son audition for the San My Ballet Company."

Hazel offered a friendly smile as the women moved to the sofa. "Wow, that's amazing. Congratulations!"

Emi nodded proudly. "Thank you. He moves to the city in a few weeks and he'll be staying Uptown with a family who has two girls at the ballet school - Johnny and Eva Zest. We met them over a teleconference before I flew out, and both Charlie and his twin brother, Oliver, said they recognized him from a few comedy roasts on Simflix."

"We know Johnny and Eva," said Heather. "He's my son's great-uncle on his father's side. They're great people with great kids. Charlie will be in good hands in the city."

"Johnny's a funny guy," Hazel agreed warmly. "I wonder if Charlie will dance with Ash's friend Pearl."

Heather nodded. "I don't know anything about ballet, but I know Pearl has a pending offer of admission to the company when she turns thirteen. I know how headstrong her mother is, so I don't doubt Pearl in the slightest. What a small world it would be if Charlie and Pearl ended up dancing Swan Lake together someday."

"Layne and I don't want Charlie to feel any more pressure than the pressure he already puts on himself. But we know he's in the best place to build toward his dream, and we can't wait to see what he does with the opportunity."

Heather and her family made all the time in the world for each other, but made time to nurture their friendships, too. As spring slowly creeped toward summer, the Gordons' lives were blissfully full. ->

NOTE: I was feeling like I had missed an opportunity to change the spelling of Arron Kalani's name to Arun when he was a baby because his his mother is Zoe Patel (and Arron always irritated me with the two r's, anyway, I know BS reason), but @matchalovertrait gave me the idea of him embracing his name's original spelling now that he's almost a teenager himself. I loved the idea so Arron is, from here on out, officially Arun Kalani!

“Goddamn Batman and his stupid fucking lantern like it’s the 1940’s.” Jim grumbled as he pressed the on switch, wrapping his coat around him tighter after pulling a cigarette from his carton and a lighter from his pocket. Barbara was really pushing for him to quit it, and honestly he should unless he wants to die of a heart attack before fifty, but the job was stressful and a cigarette gave him some much needed relief. Sue him. There’s worse vices, especially in this town.

The wind this high up cut straight to the bone, and he could already feel the chill that meant rain. If he was lucky, the vigilante would show up before the first drops. If he was unlucky, it wouldn’t rain at all, and the chill just meant a fog from the docks was rolling in. Fog always made shit complicated. More car crashes, roads get slick, people did stupid crimes with a nature made cover, and you had to deal with it all not being able to see two feet in front of your nose. And it was hell with his glasses.

He lit the cigarette and sighed out the smoke, resigning to wait anywhere between ten seconds and fifteen minutes until the oversized bat got his ass up here. Seriously, a signal? This was the modern century, burner phones exist. Radios. Walkie-talkies. Hell, with all the tech Batman had, he could probably make some wildly complicated one way transmission system. He didn’t need to put a neon sign up to the city to make sure they understood the GPD was corrupt and incompetent. He preferred if they figured that out themselves, thank you very much.

As he was musing on the impracticalities of the light (seriously, it could be tampered with so easily and there’s no backup Mr. Plans for Everything), that’s when he heard that awful gruff voice behind him.

“Captain.”

Jim definitely did not jump but he did sigh, turning around and ready to give him some crap about not being all creepy, when every single thing he had thought of in the last six minutes of waiting died in his throat as he recognized there was another presence.

A smaller presence.

A much, much smaller presence.

A child.

Batman had a goddamn child with him.

Without long sleeves, and he had on pixie boots, and what looked an awful lot like.. shorts?

“Batman.” Jim could barely conceal the pure bafflement and small rage boiling inside. “Who is that?”

Batman just stared for a moment before gesturing slightly to the boy. “This is Robin. My partner.”

Robin grinned, and waved, and stood up from his crouched position on the fucking edge of the rooftop. Every single paternal bone in Jim’s body screamed at him to pull him away from there, how was Batman okay with that??

“Robin.” He repeated back, and the boy nodded happily. “Pants. Why don’t- why are you wearing shorts? It’s 40 degrees out.”

Well, it was quickly indicated that was the wrong thing to say with the way Robin instantly frowned, his little brows furrowing into what Jim would call a pout. Jesus Christ.

“I’m wearing tights, and it’s not shorts, it’s a leotard! And why does everyone want me to wear pants? They are no fun, and they get in the way of everything! Have you ever tried to do a round off in pants, sir? There’s a reason acrobats don’t wear jeans!” And, as if to prove his point, Robin dove forward onto the rooftop, rolled, and sprung up in a handstand that he held with shocking stability. “See?”

Jim’s eyes flicked up to Batman, who, for just a moment, looked incredibly resigned by the show of acrobatics as Robin came out of the handstand and followed it up with a standing flip (where the hell did Batman find this boy?) before returning to Batman’s side. A blink and you’ll miss it moment before his normal, impassive expression returned.

“Robin.” There was a hint of something Jim couldn’t place in the tone, but instead of cowering like most people, Robin simply beamed again.

“It’s good to finally meet you, Captain. I’ve heard a lot about you. All good things, all good things!” He held up his hands placatingly before clasping them and rocking on his heels. “Now, what’s the sitch? We haven’t got all night, you know.” He could tell Robin winked under that godforsaken domino mask, and by George, was that an honest to God sigh from Batman?

Instead of debating the ethics of Robin running around with, apparently, tights and a leotard any longer, Jim pushed up his glasses with his free hand, rubbed at his eyes for a moment with his fingers, and dropped his shoulders with a heavy breath.

“So, we’ve heard rumblings of Two-Face planning an acid attack..”

After three minutes of explaining all he had heard, and letting his poor cigarette go out, he wasn’t going to smoke around what was very clearly a young child, Batman and Robin turned to leave, but Jim wasn’t quite done.

“Batman.” That got the figure to pause. “A word.”

Probably against every bone in the weirdo’s body, Batman turned, and walked closer to Jim. He didn’t say anything, just stared, but he wasn’t going to lose nerve now.

“A single fucking thing happens to that boy, Batman,” his voice was lower, downright angry, “and I’ll show you how good and goddamn ruthless a detective I can be. Got it?”

Batman, of course, didn’t back down, but he did nod once, slow and purposeful. “Captain.”

Then, with a swish of his ridiculous cape, Batman went off the side of the building to follow Robin to wherever the hell they were off to.

Jim let out a long half sigh, half groan, and went to relight his cigarette when a single raindrop hit the end, dampening the paper.

That was enough to get him to go inside and deal with all of this another day.

Resurface (MIA Series Part 4)

Chapter 1 - Reflect

Scott’s finally ready to leave his past buried in the past - but a problem left dormant has a tendency to resurface at the most unexpected moments.

Scott adjusted the tie and straightened the collar by feel alone then kept his eyes tight shut as he fastened one, two, three weighty buttons and carefully smoothed the lapels of the jacket. He took a deep breath and a side step to line himself up with where he knew the mirror was. Then another couple of slow breaths were required before he opened his eyes.

The hairs on the back of his neck shivered but he didn’t panic. That was… good.

He looked over at the framed photograph, liberated from Dad’s office and temporarily propped up on his bedside table, and then back at his reflection. His first identifiable thought was that he’d definitely aged. A highly active job meant it all still fitted, which was a relief. Although things were perhaps a little more snug around the upper arms than before, he’d not developed the ‘Officer Gut’ that usually compelled ex-forces personnel to purchase a new dress uniform in order to attend certain events. His face was leaner though, with more shadow around the eyes and slightly more pronounced lines at the forehead. Well. Inevitable really. And the greys… he’d blame Gordon for most of those.

The other main difference was the second silver bar. That made him uncomfortable. The promotion, along with the handful of new medals, had been awarded ‘posthumously’ presumably for the dubious achievement of having been missing long enough for them to assume he’d given his life in service. He hadn’t earned it. Dad must have pinned them on before hiding the dress uniform away in the back of his old closet the best part of a decade ago and it had been packaged up with all the other clothes and moved out with them to the island without any real thought. Until now, Scott had never taken the uniform out of the protective plastic covering to see. He’d removed the extra medals, straight away, no way was he wearing those, but his First Lieutenant bar was missing so he was stuck with the Captain. Fine. It was only for an evening. He could fake it for an evening.

He frowned at himself and straightened his shoulders, since when had he got so slouchy? He looked again at the photograph - his younger self smiling proudly at the camera, smug in his naivety. He could see the desperation in the young man’s eyes to prove himself to be as impressive as the outfit made him look, unaware of the weight of it all.

He looked back at older Scott and raised an eyebrow. Maybe he wasn’t slouching, the damn thing had just got heavier over time. He was roused from his musing by a muffled double thump at the door which he presumed was the toe of his brother’s boot. He called out an invitation without averting his eyes from the mirror.

His little brother pushed the door open with his behind and entered the room with the two huge mugs of coffee Scott had hoped might be in the offing. Caffeine was denied him though as a split second later there was a crash, a faint moan and Virgil was gone, empty cups rolling across the floor and coffee soaking into the carpet.

My More Obscure Fanfic

I got a kudos today on an old fic for a rare pairing, so I thought I’d put together a list of some of my fics for smaller or more obscure fandoms, ones that might take some time to find because they’re way down the bottom of my fandoms list on AO3.

Got a Gunmetal Shine (L.A. Confidential 1997)

A small Jack Vincennes/Ed Exley fanfic, because this is a tiny pairing, and I’m not sure why? Well, okay. Ed/Bud(/Lynn), I kind of get that one will win out, but there’s also the fact that Jack’s last scene was a message to Ed. So. I thought I’d give those boys some love?

Morning Truths (Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter 1974)

This is one of two fics for this fandom on AO3, which isn’t surprising because it’s one of the more obscure Hammer Horror vampire flicks of the 70s. But I really enjoyed the character of Hieronymus Grost, our hero’s hunchbacked sidekick, so here’s a warm little morning friendship moment.

A Wonderous Terror (RED 2010)

Again, Ivan/Victoria is such a tiny pairing, which baffles me because they were easily the most fantastic and adorable part of these movies. This is a tiny scene set after the first movie of Ivan musing adoringly at a still-wounded Victoria.

Old Strengths and New Weaknesses (Flash Gordon 1980)

This movie is a giant ball of 80s cheese riffing off 30s cheese, but I love it. So I wrote a fic about Princess Aura and Prince Barin, in the aftermath of the movie, struggling to deal with the changes two Earth heroes have wrought on their world and on them. Aura/Barin with hints of an OT4, because this is one of the most polyamorous movies I’ve ever seen.

This Time We Have (The Breed 2001)

Again, one of 4 fics total for this fandom on AO3, because this is an incredibly obscure vampire dystopia movie from the early oughts, but I wanted an OT3 fic between the main lead, his vampiric partner, and his vampiric love interest, about the fact that they both love him and he is, perhaps deeply inconveniently, immune to vampirism.

A Worthy Foe (The Valois Romances by Alexandre Dumas)

Not exactly Dumas’ most famous work, but I adore the character of Chicot, the jester to King Henri III of France. And the Comte de Bussy has an odd comment in the books where he notes that a friend of his ‘knows Chicot is a rough swordsman’ so be careful not to challenge him. This, from what is likely the best swordsman in the kingdom, and our hero. So … how did Bussy know?

The Love I Bear Thee (The Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner)

Relius/Teleus became a much more popular pairing after the fifth book, but I’m somewhat proud that I saw it all the way back at the third, and that this was the first story for that pairing on AO3. On the subject of loves for whom one would forgive torture, and why.

Ka, Akh, Ren (The Mummy 1999/Highlander the Series)

This one is not a rare pair or fandom, as such, it’s just that since we’ve been talking about the Mummy recently I remembered that I wrote it. The Mummy crew meet a 5000 year old dead man, and after an initial round of bullets, it goes surprisingly well?

Choose Not Lethe & Never Strangers (Dark City 1998)

This movie has a pretty small but dedicated fanbase, and I deeply adore it. Two fics exploring the potential relationship between Dr. Screber and John Murdoch after the end of the movie, now that they are abruptly free and can focus on complications other than survival.

Love’s Weight in Knowing & Brightness Dwells (James Asher Vampire series by Barbara Hambly)

Again, not the most popular vampire series in the world, but such a good one. These were written after I think reading only the first two books? The first is James and Lydia struggling over their love for a monster and their wish that someone had been there to save his soul, and the second is Simon, said monster, struggling over his love for a pair of mortals and how very dangerous that love is to his sociopathic vampiric survival instinct.

Beneath the Skin (Magnificent Seven TV Series)

Not at all a rare fandom, but stories with Nathan and Ezra as the main relationship (even mostly platonically as in this case) are a bit thinner on the ground. A supernatural AU still set in the old West where Ezra, as a consequence of his itinerant gambler’s lifestyle, can play vampire hunter at a push, and Nathan, as a consequence of his background as a slave, has some darker secrets still.

… A fair few of my smaller fandoms are for vampire media, I’m noticing. And some of my AUs even for bigger media are also vampire related. Heh.

Synopsis: Batman briefly recounts the events of The Long Halloween, where he, along with Captain James Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, fought a year long crusade to dismantle the criminal empire of Carmine "The Roman" Falcone. During that time, a serial killer named Holiday violently struck out at Gotham's underworld. Batman suspected that Dent was Holiday, but it turned out to be Falcone's son, Alberto. Now, the Roman is dead, and Dent is in Arkham Asylum. Alberto had been sentenced to die in the gas chamber, but during an appeal, he was ruled insane and transferred to Arkham Asylum, where he has a cell across from Calendar Man, who resents him for stealing his modus operandi.

The new District Attorney, Janice Porter, is attempting to secure Alberto's release. She notes that Alberto endured quite a beating at the hands of Batman, causing permanent nerve damage in his right arm. Alberto thanks her for devoting so much time to his case, and tells her that he is sorry for what he is done. Calendar Man tells her that he is sorry, too.

Porter pays a visit to Gordon, who has recently been promoted to Commissioner. She asks for Gordon to hand over all case files on Alberto. She insists that Alberto's civil rights were violated when Batman beat him, and Gordon stood by and let it happen. Gordon warns Porter that she is making a mistake, but she stands her ground. When Porter leaves, Batman emerges from the shadows. Gordon tells him that Porter is not going to be able to work with them, and that he might not be able to protect Batman. He then breaks down, saying that he misses Dent. Batman discourages such talk, and Gordon reminds him that no matter what Harvey has become, he was a friend to them both. As Batman leaves, he muses that the storm currently raging in Gotham is only beginning.

Last show: Right now I’m all in about the new Kitchen Nightmares season (I love Gordon Ramsey. Nothing like watching an asshole get yelled at by a Brit to cheer you up.) We are also almost done with the Netflix doc “Surviving Twin Flames” which is fucking WILD.

Current Obsession: honestly, all my thoughts rn are on Palestine and how I, as a Jewish person, can lift their voices and help as much as I can. I’m thinking about little else. I have a lot of reposted content on my tiktok if you want to educate about it ❤️🇵🇸. Otherwise, Skyrim and RDR.

Sims In Bloom: Generation 2 Pt. 124 (Ash Meets the Old Man)

"Of course I can see you! Why shouldn't I? You don't look like a ghost like Felix Psyded."

"I don't know who that is."

"He only used to be a ghost, but now he's a lawyer and a friend of my mom and Conrad."

Ben perked up, standing as his dog came bounding up the path. "You know Conrad Gordon?"

Ash followed the old man, kneeling to greet the friendly Chesapeake Bay retriever. "Yeah, he's my stepdad. Do you know Conrad?"

The old man nodded happily. "We met not too long ago," he said. "Your stepdad's a good man."

"I'm not supposed to talk to strangers, but it's a good thing you know Conrad, because now you're not a stranger anymore! So if you're lonely on Love Day, I can hang out with you. My name's Ash and I'm eight and a half."

"Is that what today is? No wonder I've seen so many lovers circling the lighthouse." He grinned, staring wistfully out to sea. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Ash. I'm Ben, and this is my dog."

"You don't know today's Love Day?"

He shook his head. "I haven't celebrated Love Day in a long, long time. Not since I was a teenager."

"I can help you celebrate! I even made tissue paper flowers, if you want them." Ash's excitement faded when he opened his backpack. "Oh no! My math textbook crushed the flowers."

Ben offered a warm smile and the dog rushed to his side. "Oh, that's okay. I'm not sure I have a place to put flowers, anyway."

Ash liked the old man. He was nice and felt like a friend already. "What's your dog's name?"

"His name's Captain Whitaker. He's the only friend I need on Love Day, really."

Ash smiled. "That's nice! We have three pets at home. There's Mayor Whiskers and Queen Cupcake - those are the cats. And Gord is our dog. He's the best dog ever."

The retriever barked and Ben smiled. "Captain Whitaker says he's pretty amazing, too."

"It seems like he is!" Ash gave Captain Whitaker another squeeze, slipping him a Buttercup treat that he kept in his backpack for his own pets.

"The Captain's not competitive. He loves other dogs, kids...anyone, really," the old man mused. "He'd love if you and Conrad brought Gord out to play one afternoon. Especially now that the weather will be warm soon."

Ash heard the foghorn behind them and remembered the time. "That's a great idea! But I should get the next ferry home before my mom starts to worry where I am."

The old man nodded as Ash gathered his things to head to the docks, still a little sad about the crushed flowers. "See you again, lad."

"Bye, Mr. Ben. Have a nice Love Day with Captain Whitaker!"

The old man and his dog waved him off and he returned to the mainland, running inside to find his mother. "There you are. I thought you'd be home from school already."

"I stayed to talk to an old man named Ben because I thought he was lonely, but he was just spending the day with his dog."

"You saw Ben?"

"Do you know Ben, too? He said he knew Conrad so I knew he wasn't a stranger."

She was at a loss for words, unsure how much to tell him about the old man without talking to Conrad first. Conrad and Ash could both see Ben and his dog, though Ash didn't seem to think they were spectres at all. But Conrad could be weird about ghosts, and Heather didn't want to say the wrong thing.

"Did you shake the man's hand?" she wondered.

Ash shook his head. "No, but I played with his dog. Captain Whitaker was really nice. I bet he'd get along great with Gord and the cats!"

"I bet he would, but it's time to get cleaned up for dinner. I'm making spaghetti with Dulce sauce tonight."

Ash ran upstairs, excited for pasta with his favourite tomato sauce, while Heather grew even more anxious for Conrad to get home from Sulani. ->

NOTE: EA wants to reanimate the dog before I can do it myself with ambrosia treats? Fine. That's still the plan, but we're working with this a little since I already made it canon that ghosts can look corporeal, thanks to Ben! But the notion that Ash can see and interact with them when no one but Conrad has previously done so only came about after the random Love Day pop-up, when Ben was the first old man in a park on Deadgrass Isle (where my headcanon puts the school) who came to mind.

WHY can Ash see Ben? It might be obvious once it's revealed, but I love all your theories so far!

WCIF: The functional backpack build/buy item by Cassity Simmer was placed with TOOL for this and the previous installment, and I felt it was necessary because of the pop-up. It acts like a storage trunk and sits anywhere in world or on desks/tables, with lots of swatches!

A sequel to Presence (AO3) which was meant to be just another little 5 chapter thing but got away from me a tad…

Scott adjusted the tie and straightened the collar by feel alone then kept his eyes tight shut as he fastened one, two, three weighty buttons and carefully smoothed the lapels of the jacket. He took a deep breath and a side step to line himself up with where he knew the mirror was. Then another couple of slow breaths were required before he opened his eyes.

The hairs on the back of his neck shivered but he didn’t panic. That was… good.

He looked over at the framed photograph, liberated from Dad’s office and temporarily propped up on his bedside table, and then back at his reflection. His first identifiable thought was that he’d definitely aged. A highly active job meant it all still fitted, which was a relief. Although things were perhaps a little more snug around the upper arms than before, he’d not developed the ‘Officer Gut’ that usually compelled ex-forces personnel to purchase a new dress uniform in order to attend certain events. His face was leaner though, with more shadow around the eyes and slightly more pronounced lines at the forehead. Well. Inevitable really. And the greys… he’d blame Gordon for most of those.

The other main difference was the second silver bar. That made him uncomfortable. The promotion, along with the handful of new medals, had been awarded ‘posthumously’ presumably for the dubious achievement of having been missing long enough for them to assume he’d given his life in service. He hadn’t earned it. Dad must have pinned them on before hiding the dress uniform away in the back of his old closet the best part of a decade ago and it had been packaged up with all the other clothes and moved out with them to the island without any real thought. Until now, Scott had never taken the uniform out of the protective plastic covering to see. He’d removed the extra medals, straight away, no way was he wearing those, but his First Lieutenant bar was missing so he was stuck with the Captain. Fine. It was only for an evening. He could fake it for an evening.

He frowned at himself and straightened his shoulders, since when had he got so slouchy? He looked again at the photograph - his younger self smiling proudly at the camera, smug in his naivety. He could see the desperation in the young man’s eyes to prove himself to be as impressive as the outfit made him look, unaware of the weight of it all.

He looked back at older Scott and raised an eyebrow. Maybe he wasn’t slouching, the damn thing had just got heavier over time. He was roused from his musing by a muffled double thump at the door which he presumed was the toe of his brother’s boot. He called out an invitation without averting his eyes from the mirror.

His little brother pushed the door open with his behind and entered the room with the two huge mugs of coffee Scott had hoped might be in the offing. Caffeine was denied him though as a split second later there was a crash, a faint moan and Virgil was gone, empty cups rolling across the floor and coffee soaking into the carpet.
