Did Levi lost his will to live after Erwin died?

Fandom is a space for creative freedom—where we can explore, celebrate, and even romanticize our favorite characters in ways that resonate with us. That’s part of the beauty of being in a fandom. We’re free to ship whoever with whoever. But what’s disheartening is the toxicity that comes from fans who insist their ship is the only canon one, especially in the Attack on Titan (AoT) universe. The truth is, unless Hajime Isayama explicitly confirms it, every ship is speculative—and that's okay. What isn't okay is deducing a character's whole convictions and personality just to justify their ships.

I’ve supported Levi Ackerman ever since his debut in Season 1—long before I became a Levihan shipper (yes, I’m a newer recruit in that camp, this happened after watching the Anime thrice and reading the manga). And if you’re curious why Levi is my favorite character, I have a long-ass explanation for that elsewhere. But here, I want to focus on how some Eruri shippers portray him—and why that portrayal often oversimplifies his character to the point of doing him a disservice (something I can't accept. I'm a Levi fangirl waaaay before I became a Levihan devotee).

There’s this persistent claim that Levi "lost his will to live" after Erwin died, or that his only remaining purpose was to fulfill his "vow" to kill Zeke. These statements flatten Levi’s entire identity into that of a robotic, grief-stricken killer whose life began and ended with Erwin. That’s not only reductive, it’s wrong. Levi is one of the most layered characters in AoT, and to reduce him to being “Erwin’s weapon” ignores everything else he represents and fights for.

Let’s unpack that.

During the Return to Shiganshina (RtS) arc, Levi delivers one of his most iconic lines: “Give up on your dream and die.” This wasn’t blind loyalty to Erwin. It was Levi seeing that Erwin had become consumed—not by his duty to humanity, but by his personal obsession to prove his father’s theory. That obsession, left unchecked, was risking everything the Scouts had fought for. Erwin, once the hope of the Survey Corps, had become a slave to a goal that would have no meaning beyond its fulfillment. What would he have done after reaching the basement? Levi recognized this. He saw that hope for the future no longer rested with Erwin—it lived in Armin, Hange, Eren, and the next generation.

That’s why, during the infamous ‘serum bowl’, Levi hesitated. Twice. If he truly couldn’t live without Erwin, if his whole existence hinged on him, he would have injected him immediately. But he didn’t. He made a choice based on what was best for humanity, not just for himself or for Erwin’s sake. That’s not betrayal. That’s growth, maturity, leadership, and most of all—vision.

The so-called "vow" to kill the Beast Titan wasn't some obsessive oath made out of grief or romantic fixation. It was Levi's way of honoring the massive cost of the suicide charge—the death of the commander of the Scouts and a battalion of new recruits. Not being able to take down Zeke would have rendered their sacrifice meaningless. The "cart scene vow" was about justice, not obsession. Levi saw himself as the only one capable of ensuring that their deaths wouldn’t be in vain and that is a very important promise for Levi. A solemn promise that’s why he uses the word vow when remembering his promise to Erwin because he knows that he will do it, he will give justice to his fallen comrades, but it must be done when the time is right.

Even later, when given the opportunity to kill Zeke, Levi didn’t. Why? Because he respected the chain of command—Hange’s leadership, Eren’s plans, and the greater mission of Paradis. If Levi were driven solely by revenge or Erwin’s ghost, he would’ve taken Zeke out the first chance he got. But he didn't. He chose duty over vengeance, showing once again that Levi is not a mindless weapon of grief—he's a soldier of conviction.

I am a Levihan worshipper but I COULD NEVER FATHOM TO CLAIM that he lost his will to live when Hange died (inspite of the three panels showing the decline of his mental state?) No. That would be a disservice to everything Levi has fought for. Even after all he endured, he kept going—giving his all, staying mission-focused, continuing to believe in the dream of freedom for humanity. His strength doesn’t come from one person; it comes from his values, his belief in hope, and his loyalty to those who carry that light in their eyes.

Levi’s only true flaw, if you ask me, is that he trusted too much—putting his faith in people who either died or betrayed him. How many scenes did people say they will take care of something and when Levi let them, they died? But that’s also what made him admirable. He followed Erwin not just out of loyalty, but because Erwin gave him a vision, a purpose. Levi, who once lived in the Underground, used his strength for petty survival. Erwin gave him the means to use that strength for something bigger than himself. But that doesn't mean Levi lived for Erwin. It means he lived for the ideals Erwin once represented—and later, that others like Armin, Hange, and Eren carried forward.

So yes, ship Levi with whoever you want—I sure do. But don’t reduce him to a mere extension of someone else's character arc. Don’t use your ship to undermine the complexity of his decisions or the integrity of his journey. Levi Ackerman is not just “Erwin’s,” “Hange’s,” or “Eren’s.” His loyalty was never blind. It was earned, and always rooted in one thing: humanity’s survival and freedom.

Attack on Titan episode 1-9 is still one of the best stretches of "action series" episodes to me.

It's just so expertly paced and the character writing under the surface is simple, but rock solid.

I've been revisiting the series via rereading, rewatching and reactions and I still maintain it does a really good job at criticising what it is depicting, especially for what it is.

It is your action shounen/cheap B-horror mix with the very important ingredient of introspection thrown in there.

I've consumed a number of truly bad stories that really do "glorify" war and oppression and othering and the true difference between AoT and those stories is the desire to interrogate itself.

Truly hateful stories don't empathise with perspectives they don't agree with or balance out their own central ideas with others and are often either indifferent to or gleeful in the horror they depict. They do not think about what is happening on screen.

And to me AoT at least avoids this fundamental issue.

I'm playing catch-up with this series and I stumbled upon this blurb in a relatively recent (2023) interview:

It would have been nice if I could have changed the ending. Writing manga is supposed to be freeing. But if I was completely free, then I should have been able to change the ending. I could have changed it and said I wanted to go in a different direction. But the fact is that I was tied down to what I had originally envisioned when I was young. And so, manga became a very restrictive art form for me, similar to how the massive powers that Eren acquired ended up restricting him.

This is so interesting because I get the feeling it would've actually been more sincere writing had he changed the ending/story according to his current perspective.

I couldn't explain it for a while, but a bunch of the final stretch felt more insecure and did not have the "sincerity" the rest of the story had and this might just explain it.

Some twists later in the story really do feel like they happen because they "have to" and for the story to get where it needs to be.

I think it's really interesting it becomes a delibrate part of the theming of the series, but I'm curious how Isayama would've changed the original plan had he decided he could change it, be it for better or worse.

Internet spaces especially really sort of place "planning the story out from start to finish" on a pedestal when it comes to depicting a narrative, but just like everything else, I think this shouldn't be the only way to tell a story.

We've got the concept for that remake in 10 or 20 years right here, though.

Just a reinterpretation/different path, so we'd get something new out of it.

Or we go full sequel because the tree popped out of the ground again in those extra pages.

I think this might be my one personal crazy theory for the series, but I think Eren is still stuck in Paths because they buried his head instead of burning it and didn't actually kill the parasite.

Goes a little against the theming of rebirth and "putting him to rest" in the final chapter, but do it.

I think death is enough because the shit Eren went through is valid and eternal suffering for even the worst people isn't the solution to anything (just kill them and be done with it), but some want more punishment for Eren, so there you go.

As romance fan, have you ever read any manga/manhwa (either m/f, m/m or f/f) that you wish the main couple don't end up together like they just have strong platonic bond? Or either character end up romantically with other character (2nd ml or fl)? Sorry for this random ask.

For me some are Maomao/Jinshi (Apothecary Diaries), Eren/Mikasa (Aot), & Yamato/Yuuji (Koimonogatari)

Not exactly manga/manhwa, but I wasn't super into Kataang. I preferred Katara and Zuko. However, I also wasn't opposed to Kataang in theory, but more how it was written (which was weak) vs how her bond with Zuko was written. I believe the writers even stated that they realized they kind of botched the Katara and Aang getting together part, which yeah. They did.

I'm pretty open to ships. Pretty much all I want from a main pairing is for it to embody the themes and matter for the story. I may feel less consumed by some ships (as main ships can be sanitized) than side ones (like say Ed and Winry vs Roy and Riza in FMA), but I still want them to end up together because the story set it up.

So while I haven't read Koimonogatari, for Eren and Mikasa and for MaoMao and Jinshi, I absolutely think they needed to get together romantically for the story to make sense. Because while all forms of love are powerful, romantic love is not identical or interchangeable with other types (and platonic is not interchangeable either). It's more exclusive typically, and involves a sexual component and physical vulnerability that, in certain stories like The Apothecary Diaries, are extremely relevant to the themes.

In TAD, Jinshi pretending to be a eunuch is symbolic of his reluctance to fully self-actualize, understanding who he is and whom he wants to be. While of course sexuality isn't necessary to be an adult, it is a significant part of it for many people, and in these types of coming-of-age stories (which TAD is), it would be a major turning point. Him accepting desire and pursuing what he wants is necessary for his growth. Similarly, for Maomao, her growing up in a brothel but believing she's incapable of love is something she has to overcome. Platonically, she always has overcome it--the mental bind for her is specifically romantic (and sexual) love. Them feeling safe to live that life together and form their own--healthy--family is kind of integral to the themes, and the foundation of the story.

For Eremika, I would also say that Armin and Annie was my OTP. Eremika didn't give me all the feelings. That said, I knew it was romantic and that it had to be for the story to make sense. What Mikasa always wanted was a family. Her killing Eren was her sacrifice, less a rebuke of her love and an affirmation. She still got her family, of course, but her love for Eren endured. I've talked about this before, but I think the romantic aspect was crucial because it had unhealthy and healthy aspects to it, and it would have been less powerful as a conclusion without this. Armin killing Eren just wouldn't have the same impact, and that's why the story ends with Armin taking credit for it--to allow Mikasa to grieve, because she and Eren shared something romantic.

However, and this is important--what I think and prefer from ships and dynamics doesn't matter! It's fine to en joy what you enjoy and prefer friendships if you prefer those. We all look for different things from the stories we engage with and enjoy. I'm just explaining why, for me, those ships have to be romantic.

hey.... i wanna know your honest Thoughts on the jjk ending? Give a rating out 10. Honestly i'm ranting. I mean the good things in the chapter were sukuna's conclusion, the flashback with gojo , queen utahime being alive yay and the nice art with everyone at the end. Usually i would wait for a story to finish before ranting/judging but my god this kinda sucked. I don't want to be too critical but god I am just disappointed and kinda mad. Overall it is an okay/mid manga ;). Gege is not worst writer but ughh. Aot or mha sure they have their flaws but my god..These should never be compared to THIS. so now we could really say that gojo stayed south. With the full chapter, this does not change my opinion cause it still kinda sucks overall even with the whole north vs south meaning. Nothing really changed in the society or lessons maybe except for yuji and sukuna. The kiddos all really went back to missions huh after everything. I have alot to say with relationships and bonds, wasted potential on many aspects but that is a whole other discussion. i totally understand we can't write a backstory for every single character but that is not what i am insinuating here and yes there should be room for a little literary interpretation . That a whole different topic... Anyways I agree with alot your rants. i would like to hear your opinions. In the end we never got to see a gjhm flashback unfortunately. Ok so let say gojo is dead dead I find it hard to believe no was like remembering or acknowledging not even his comrades ( examples shoko, utahime etc_ or the students (i mean i am pretty sure these characters would but i would like to SEE it you know) and so many hints were gearing for gojo's revival but it is meaningless... and was used for pr ngl that's sad. I already went on a mini rant here. If I have to rate the ending, I'd say maybe 2-4 out of 10?

JJK really did turn out kinda mid. It has an easy anime to get into (the anime carries it mostly 🫣), to recommend for newbies, but that ending will make one hesitate to recommend it now. Maybe wouldn't even bother to.

I'm also disappointed & mad. I don't even wanna consider that Gojo is fully dead (cuz Gege went about it so terribly). Gege skipped Gojo's whole month after his unsealing then killed him off-panel a few chapters later. The north & south thing was pointless. We didn't even get to see Gojo make a choice. There were so many hints about his potential revival but they amounted to nothing.

This Tweet sums up the terrible mishandling of Gojo's character too 😡. This other short thread pretty much says that his "death" didn't make sense for Gojo either; accepting to stay at the airport is him regressing to his teen self. It doesn't properly conclude Gojo's character arc at all. He was meant to MOVE ON from the loss of his "springtime of youth" & continue to strive for a better future with his comrades & students; the future that HE DREAMED OF 😤 (oof, don't wanna rant further on Gojo; don't wanna make this longer 😅).

Honestly, the fan theories made the story seem much better than it actually was. At least with this ending, people can finally start seeing & admitting that Gege isn't a great writer. I've certainly never thought he was 😒; I once went on a rant here about most issues with this manga, one of them being how terribly fast-paced it is. This story is the definition of wasted potential. So many missed opportunities.

Whatever Gege comes up with for the databook, it'll be infuriating. He'll try to fill in the plot holes but man, I don't think it'll be satisfying. He might not even answer the burning questions everyone has (just like Kub0 never answered everyone's burning questions about the Bl3ach ED, or more like, no one dared to ask. Maybe he himself didn't allow those questions for his interviews 😒). Hope ppl don't give him any more money, especially cuz he's still milking Gojo, such as with that Hidden Inventory movie no one asked for.

I kinda wanted a Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1 ending (lol) & then on to the supposed JJK part 2, esp cuz of this sketch here but Gege fumbled hard.

Wonder if Mappa could deliver but we'll see. I only care about GojoHime's 200% Hollow Purple now. Gege made me lose most interest I had for other things getting animated. Just thinking about that ending will mostly ruin my experience... 😞

I also hope the GojoHime fandom continues to thrive. We've always lived off of crumbs... Hope ppl continue to make headcanons, fanfics, fanart, etc... I wouldn't want ppl to leave such a beautiful ship with so much potential 🥺 (I've been thru this type of thing before with Bl3ach, so despite the disappointment, I've stuck around in my ship fandoms only. I don't engage with anything else in that series. Another beloved series of mine also ended terribly but unfortunately, the fandom kinda faded or became inactive cuz it's a manhwa 🥺; if it at least had a proper anime adaptation, then...).

Hello again, another question with AOT Eren being in Post-Rumbling AOP! I imagine Rung hearing about AOT Eren from Primus when he is at one of their sessions, Rung will freeze and internally, most of Primes will be freaking the fuck out. I imagine pulling AOT Eren to what remains of the Paths while he is asleep, which I imagine he will be in old HQ of Survey Corps so that Hanji has close eye on him...and to basically help around given he is stuck in this timeline.

So, Primus and Primes, brought him to their realm, and they are trying to find out HOW he is here, especially when they learn he is from a different timeline, not sure how they will treat AOT Eren given he started Rumbling and killed 80% of Humanity, but he didn't punch Primus or they will see he is relatively more stable mentally.

I imagine they will be shocked or surprised with how he treats Ymir, being happy she is free and that he ap[ologises that his idiotic counterpart did not help her get free, but demanded Founder's power.

I imagine he will ask to see AOP Eren...and promptly starts beating him up for being his stupid self.

But really AOT Eren just disappears on everyone and they just...kind of let it go at this point?! Like what else do they do with that?! They just hope AOT Eren doesn't come back or end up in a place that would have them do damage control. But basically Rung found him, snapped his fingers and AOT Eren was transported to the realm of the Primes with 12 deities staring him down.

AOT Eren:...This is a really weird day.

Liege Maximo: Really? That's all you have to say?

AOT Eren: To be honest. I think this is a weird version of hell.

They immediately clock in that something is wrong when Primus introduces himself and Eren doesn't have a negative reaction. More confused if anything. And they they realize:

Primus: By the Allspark it's multiverse theory.

Amalgamous: Hah?!

Primus: THIS IS THE ORIGINAL EREN!

The Primes start screaming while Eren is quite terrified at these deities freaking out about it.

Prima: How did he end up in this timeline?!

Everyone snaps their heads to Vector.

Vector: I did nothing! You all know how meticulous I am at my job!

Micronus: You're the only one with the powers to do it! And Primus is confused too!

AOT Eren just asks to be sent home, or to hell. Either way, he just doesn't want to be here. And the Primes would be surprised at how calm he is.

Eren: I wiped out 80% of humanity. Do you really think someone like me deserves mercy?

Solus: At least this version isn't trying to argue or justify it.

Eren: I'm sorry. The other version tried to justify it?

And yes, AOT Eren asks before he leaves or they send him wherever that he takes a crack at AOP Eren.

Prima: You want to do what?!

Eren: I mean...I still got issues with myself so...why not?

Liege Maximo:...you wanna borrow my darts?

And it's basically that Batman meme. The beat down:

AOT Eren comes back bloodied while Primus pockets a banged up AOP Eren somewhere else. AOT Eren is ready to go to hell officially, but...the Primes are in a good mood. And a little bit generous.

Primus: How would you like to be our guinea pig?

AOT Eren: I don't follow.

Primus: See, I don't believe in an eternal hell. I believe in reincarnation. But as you know, you have done some rather heinous crimes. And giving you reincarnation with all of those crimes...would be too easy. So I intend to put your alternative self through some trials to prove that he is worthy of reincarnation. There are still some factors that will determine if it will actually happen, but you can be our test subject, since you are a version of Eren. If you help out with the test, you will get tortured. But I'll over you a chance to reincarnate once this is all over.

AOT Eren:...You know I've killed more people? Right? Why would you even consider offering me a chance to reincarnate at all?

Primus: You have been dealt a bad hand, which is why I sent Optimus to your world in order to try and prevent it. Your alternate self didn't take that opportunity for peace for a variety of reasons. But you didn't have many options. But from what I've seen, you did seem open to change. The world just didn't treat you fairly.

AOT Eren:...I...I don't know what to say to that. Where would...where would I even go if I did this reincarnation thing?

Primus: Wherever your spark desires. The choice is yours.

AOT Eren:...I'm not worthy for this chance. I hurt my friends. I killed so many people, I-!

Primus: Every sentient being deserves an opportunity for redemption. You are definitely going to take some time to get there, but...I still believe that you can become a better person.

So AOT Eren agrees to be their guinea pig and gives the Primes pointers on how best to torture AOP Eren during the trials. Although AOT Eren is completely traumatized after test running Solus' trial and he has to take a break and throw up.

Solus beaming with pride: So my trial is perfect.

Primus and the Primes don't let AOT Eren know about Founder Ymir. She's still sleeping and she doesn't need to be involved in any of this. She needs her nap.

I guess I should make my own post on this, since it's been brought to my attention, again. All I do is post cat pictures and videos all day, and this clown continues to have a meltdown over me saying eruri isn't canon, lol.

@tsuki-no-ura is accusing me of plagiarizing her posts, lol, which, okay. And her "proof" of this is picking out single sentences from long analyses posts I've written regarding Levi's vow to kill the Beast Titan which use similar words to some of her own posts, like "personal feelings" and "vow", and this, apparently, is concrete evidence that I've based all of my own thoughts and feelings regarding this aspect of Levi's character and story on her analyses. I can't say I'm surprised, though, given tsuki's entire MO is taking quotes and words out of context and presenting them in a vacuum to push a specific narrative and agenda. She does it with Isayama and his interviews, and even the canon material itself, so why not do the same with me and anyone else who disagrees with her?

Like the idea that Levi's choice to let Erwin die and give Armin the serum was rooted in personal feelings is an original idea that belongs only to tsuki and which has no other originating source, lol. As if, while discussing the same material, there isn't going to be some overlap in the ideas and themes discussed. And for what reason is she picking out that specific wording from my posts? Is she trying to prove that I used to agree with her and changed my mind or something? That I'm being hypocritical by acknowledging that Levi's choice was based on personal feeling while also saying that Levi didn't actively decide to choose Erwin over humanity? Like both things can't be true at the same time? As I've stated over and over, Levi made the choice he believed was morally right, both for Erwin's personal well-being and for humanity, and yes, that was a choice based on his personal feelings, because as Levi himself acknowledges, that's all anyone can ever do, is make the choice they feel is best. I've made entire posts talking about how all of Levi's choices are rooted in personal feeling. That's what his entire philosophy of no regrets is about. About making the choice you feel, in your heart, is right, whether you know it to be true or not. I've also written countless posts about one of the reasons Levi's so admired Erwin was because he believed Erwin was capable of completely removing himself and his personal feelings from the choices he made, and Levi admired that in Erwin because Levi himself has always struggled with doing the same. He thought it made Erwin a superior man to himself, that he could make decisions without letting emotion interfere. I've also made posts discussing how, in actuality, we see demonstrated through Levi this theme in AoT of how it's actually those who make choices based on compassion and emotion that can be seen as superior, because it's those who cast aside their humanity for the so-called "greater good" who actually end up destroying everything. That's a clear theme presented in AoT, and nowhere is it more clearly demonstrated than through Levi and Erwin, with Levi eventually being revealed as the superior and stronger man, not in spite of his compassion, but because of it.

But you know, tsuki ignores all of this, and all of this context, and instead highlights two or three, partial sentences from these 1500, 2000, 3000 word meta posts of mine as "proof" that I'm plagiarizing her. Keep it up tuski, you only continue to prove to all and sundry what a disingenuous, manipulative, lying clown you are, by exposing exactly how you operate. By taking single sentences, presenting them completely out of context, and using that as your evidence for whatever hair-brained theory you're presenting this time.

The stupidity is never-ending from this one, and her moronic followers are just the same. Have fun patting each other on the back for what I'm sure you've convinced yourself is a win, but only makes more obvious what a bunch of delusional, crybaby, professional victims you all are.

Eren  - Jean, Weak People

I think the Jean one gets over exaggerated a little, and for good reason too, cause the girlies be EATING with those tropes. But at the end of the day they have a mutual understanding and are cordial at best. They're mostly cool because they share mutual friends and spaces but it’s no longer beef per se. 

Hear me out, I don't think anyone wiping out 80% of humanity is willing to kick it with people who aint about it. Mans need someone who’s willing to stand on business behind him. Even throughout the show he’s always admitted to not liking people who’s willing to live like “livestock.” So this is not to be confused with physically weak people by the way but psychologically weak people. Essentially Eren has beef if you’re willing to take it lying down. 

Levi - Zeke

Listennnn I LIVE for their fight scenes okay lmao. Like it's almost always on sight for them and their lil jabs at one another? It’s chucklessss for me omg. Lets be clear, their beef is absolutely warranted. It can be safely argued that Levi doesnt really care for most people but Zeke?? Oh baby its all smoke for him. 

Erwin - The Government 

I swear if it wasn't for the literal fate of humanity and his brewing theory Erwin would've just said fuck it cause baybeeee, they wanted that man GONE. They've tried to get him fired, pointed guns in his face, and built a whole ass guillotine to unalive him; in front of the entire town mind you. Maybe that was the custom back then I don't know. I don’t remember Erwin outright saying that he doesn't fuck with the government but fuck it, I’ll say it for him. Cause I'll stand ten toes down behind this one here. 

Connie - Ymir

I promise you I let out a nasty ole chuckle at the thought cause he don't even dislike her fr fr. I think it's a situation similar to Eren and Jean's in the sense that their friends and environment often see them in the same places. Because if we’re being real, not only do they have little in common but they just don't really vibe like that. I think they could've been a little more cordial but Ymir be on her own timing and it's usually at the expense of the squad. Like when she made fun of Connie for suspecting his mother was a titan or when she kidnapped Historia like 3 times and put them all in danger. And I can't even be mad at Connie for being the voice of reason cause him calling her ugly was simply the truth. I, too, reared back when I first saw Ymir's titan form. 

Jean - Eren, Reiner, Annie, Bertholt

The whole Eren thing is basically squashed but it’s worth noting that if he were to see him in public, he’d walk the other way. 

I lowkey had to dig deep for this one cause I genuinely forgot. But even though they’re all kumbaya now, those three bitches literally watched his homie get half his face chewed off by a titan. Jean is absolutely pouring one out for Marco every birthday by the way, but yeahh it’s still fuck them. Like if they were playing uno stacked, he’d save all his draw 4’s and make them draw 16. 

Onyankopon - Yelena

I'm not too sure that Ony dislikes anyone honestly. But I'm going with Yelena here mostly because she’s the reason he found himself in his current predicament. On what was supposed to be a solid plan in motion to save his people quickly turned into Ony modernizing a primitive people, helping build their resources from scratch, having people question his race (and I'm willing to bet my bottom dollar it was mfs that got ignorant), seeming untrustworthy among his peers, almost getting killed, fighting in a war he had nothing to do with, and probably losing his entire family in the rumble. Now, one or two of those things were inevitable, but if you were to view things from Ony’s POV everything went to shit over a bitch with a fatal attraction to a man with daddy issues. 

Reiner - Himself

Lmaooo I LOVE a good Reiner drag. And while this started out as a joke, I'm deadass now. This man stays talking about wanting to end it all but never follows through, smh. With lots of therapy and support, I genuinely think that Reiner would be on the road to recovery and a healthy lifestyle; but there’ll always be that lingering thought on if he’s worth it or not

Honorable mention: Ymir. But solely because she would get in the way of his fantasy life with Historia. 

Armin - Floch? 

This munchkin is damn near Tanjiro levels of sweet cause omg who does he even hate??? He is always looking for the good in people and I'm about to dislocate my shoulder reaching this hard BUT, hear me out - It’s Floch even if he doesn’t outright say it. The same Floch who damaged the flying boat and almost ruined their mission before it even started? The same Floch who fucked it up so bad that Hange had to sacrifice herself which resulted in Armin taking on an even bigger responsibility? The same Floch who got in a lil too close with his bestie Eren? Close enough to be trusted with his future plans? The same Floch who when he lay on that ground bleeding Armin was nowhere in sight? Even at the port where they attacked the Yeagerists and Armin got shot in the face, he pleaded with his old comrades to stand down but Floch is beneath that level of reasoning huh? Whether Armin despises Floch or not it's safe to say if Floch were getting jumped, Armin would definitely sneak in a kick before helping. 

Floch - Erwin

This is literally one of those cases where its like I disagree but I understand lol. That man legit made them do a suicide charge and yeah he lead the charge blah blah blah but I could never be that brave. And so that resentment is understandable but in all fairness it shaped Flochs character for the better to be honest; cause that whole pwussy boi arc was annoying. 

Also adding the main cast of the Scouts lmao. They thwarted his plans and he spent his DYING breath standing on business. Gotta respect it.

Oh my god I swear I picked both the best and the WORST time to start watching Link Click

If I started it at this point last year, I'm pretty sure I could have ended it on a clear note and just being like "oh that was a sick anime!! I am a gigantic fan of time-bendy tropes so this was actually awesome" but I hopped in like the day s3ep1 dropped and now I realize ohhhhh shit. Oh shit it's a theory-making kind of show. I thought it was just an emotional show nobody warned me it was a theory-making show.

I'm pretty sure that even if I didn't see anything outside of the show, I still would have gotten ticked off SPECIFICALLY by the bedroom scene where it turns black and staticy Cheng Xiaoshi asks Lu Guang to look at the photo, only for it to go back in color and Cheng Xiaoshi is like "nah nevermind I wasn't gonna ask anything" that's where I probably would have realized hey wait something is up.... or at the very least Lu Guang running through the alley and saying "last time we escaped through the right"

hey hey! its one of your readers on ao3 i realized i can ask questions on tumblr so i am trying it out. this may be a controversial question as opinions vary greatly from person to person lool but i am curious being a fellow fan of aot and a fan of your work, so, what did you think about the ending to aot? 👀

(personally i subscribe to a specific fan theory (NOT ANR GOD FORBID i rebuke it!) to keep hope alive in my heart that theres more aot to come cause i did not like the ending much so basically, theres no judgement from me srsly im delulu myself as it stands 😭💯)

Ahh yes the ending opinions where swords are drawn two minutes into the debate lol and it’s annoying that people can’t state their thoughts as freely because of the toxicity from every side. This is going to be long I’m sorry😭

I personally didn’t like the ending that much either. I don’t think it’s as bad as people make it out to be, I mean we’ve all seen GoT, but I know a story like AoT could’ve done a little bit better than that, so. It’s not that I wanted Eren to live happily ever after, because his death made the most sense even before I knew about it, but it’s the execution of the episode in general that makes it feel rushed for me.

Mikasa killing him is a beautifully tragic twist, I started bawling my eyes out right there, but I wish the cabin scene was done differently. For me it didn’t feel as raw and honest as the Eren-Armin convo, which I’m not the biggest fan of either, but I’ve always wanted more communication for Eremika so maybe that makes me bitter. Let me see them talk about the table scene and let me see Eren apologise to her. It’s their last moment together, I wanted to see more emotion and honesty rather than an already established relationship that they did off camera. I get what it’s trying to show, and the scene itself is not bad, but I was just a big EM shipper at the time and hoped for more. (I felt the same back when he told her he would wrap that scarf around her forever and always. It hit me just in the right place I remember wanting them to talk about it afterwards but nothing was said.) Same with the memories he gave back to his friends, I’d have liked to see them talk. Him opening his eyes one last time to see her was beautiful no comment there.

Other than that I also LOVED when Levi saluted his friends and comrades! Liked his internal monologue where he said he didn’t regret not bringing Erwin back (Which also made me wish we could’ve seen Armin coming up with impressive strategies and ideas like he used to.)

I liked how Hange was sent off, but I missed them in the final fight.

I really liked the rumbling montage with Guilty Hero playing and Armin’s VA pouring her heart out + that cry at the end when Armin sees Eren. The Levi&Mikasa team-up/final stand was amazing. Those were all done nicely, but that’s pretty much it for me.

For some reason I wasn’t vibing with Annie. I mean she was never my fav but her in season one and in her ova was so much more interesting to me.

I was left underwhelmed by the final fight considering we’ve had great battles like RTS and Liberio previously, it does not compare in my opinion. I understand that Eren won’t kill his friends and I definitely agree with that, but something else could’ve been done with Ymir to make the stakes higher. The ancient titans didn’t feel threatening when you just knew no one was going to die, especially when Falco (first time flying) could dodge all of their arrows.

When everyone there turned into titans, like Jean and Connie, I would’ve preferred if they stayed titans and died when the curse ended. Bringing them back a few minutes later is just meh for me, and makes the emotions I’ve felt a one time thing only because that Jean&Connie dialogue didn’t hit the same afterwards. Not to mention that Connie’s mom was brought back only for us to not see their reunion lol.

Ymir’s storyline was interesting when Eren saw her memories, but after that she lost me a bit. I also don’t like that that *chef’s kiss* scene with Eren telling her she’s just a person didn’t free her at all, that killing Zeke stopped the Rumbling, that Levi was nerfed for the sake of the fight. If all these decisions were done in a slightly expanded time period, I don’t think I would’ve minded much. Especially the final episode itself was, again, rushed in my opinion.

Also, this isn’t just the finale but Historia being sidelined like that is a no-no for me. Not a fan of how the Hizuru-Mikasa plot line didn’t go anywhere either. That may just be nitpicking, but again I do believe season 4 should’ve been longer, maybe with a season 5 as well.

With all that being said, these are just my personal opinions/feelings and despite all, thematically the author did a good job wrapping everything up. Ending a story like AoT couldn’t have been easy at all. Watching it was an experience I don’t think I’ll ever forget or get over and I’m forever going to miss it. (I’m reading the manga now and the uprising arc has me hooked since it’s a bit different from the anime, and dare I say better?)

The ending didn’t ruin it for me or anything, just sad that I won’t get to see the things I wanted to see because naturally everyone has their own expectations, but what are fanfictions for?

What’s the fan theory that you believe? Other than that ANR I’ve heard about the mist and ouroboros but I’ve never read them in detail.

You awkwardly apologize and play it off as wanting to do a funny video before running off to the bathroom and beating yourself up over this

When you finally calm down you walk out and tell Levi that your roommate called and they need help with something

He most likely will never bring it up again and if/when one of you ask the other out. he’s gonna pretend that’s the first time anything feeling related had been done

But in theory if he does care, don’t be surprised when the next day there’s flowers on your counter that your roommate brought in

Theres a handwritten note hidden in the blossoms that has the kind beautiful poetic writing that people dream of getting (he asked Hange what to write and they found something on Pinterest)

It practically summed up that he would like to be more than friends as well, and asked you out to dinner

As a veteran fangirl who only got into aot 2 years ago. I have been a massive fic reader for many fandoms over the years but the sheer number of long, detailed epics in the eruri fandom needs to be studied.

The number of long cinematic fics with indepth world building that are crafted with sheer love and respect for the characters in this fandom is incredible. Usually a fandom is lucky to have few that becomes classics but there seems to be one in every corner here.

I am very grateful for your Tumblr which has been a massive archive of knowledge and guide to navigating this fandom.

Thank you so much Anon ♡ I didn't originally intend for my blog to become the Eruri archive when I first got into the series in 2015, but 9 years and 23K posts later, here we are!

You're not the first person to be struck by the sheer range of incredible writing in the Eruri fandom, to say nothing of the fanart. We've been blessed by so many amazingly talented writers over the years, and one of the most amazing things is that they just keep coming. Many people predicted the demise of the Eruri fandom when Erwin died, when the manga ended, when then final anime episode aired, but the fandom is still thriving and new writers are posting fic every month.

However as you rightly pointed out, it's not just the quantity of the fic that's remarkable, it's the quality of the writing, the characterisation and the world building. I have a few of my own theories as to why that should be. First of all the canon material is a gift. Erwin and Levi are both mature adult characters with considerable depth and nuance and their canon relationship (regardless of whether you view it as romantic or not) is intertwined with the plot. It doesn't hurt that both of them have tragic backstories and then of course there's Erwin's internal conflict, heroic sacrifice and Levi's determination to fulfil vow. Honestly what more could you ask for from a ship?? It's no surprise that 3 of the 5 most popular manga chapters chosen by readers of Bessatsu Shonen manga focus on Erwin and Levi's relationship. They really are just that good.

I also think that because Erwin and Levi are both adults, rather than typical teenage shonen protagonists, that they attract a slightly older fanbase. That's not to say that younger fans can't be amazing writers of course, many are, but I think older fans often have a range of life experience that they can bring to their writing. I've lost count of the number of times I've heard fans say that the Eruri fandom has spoiled them because of the quality and range of the fic and art, and honestly, it's hard to disagree. I regularly re-read fics that were written a decade ago and the characterisation is still pitch perfect. Some of them even pre-empt canon events that appeared in the manga years later. At the same time, I'm discovering new authors every week who are writing heart breaking fics that provide new insight into these characters who I've loved for so long. The Eruri fandom really is one in a million and I'm very grateful it's been such an important part of my life for so long. I'm glad you're able to enjoy it too ♡

Tonight was so unproductive because I spent a lot of time thinking about how I actually learn.

This is just my yapping section, nothing important.

I need to improve myself because I don't have as much teaching experience as my classmates. I also don't know much theories or knowledge about language teaching. I don't think I know much about anything. I only know the surface level of knowledge from many fields.

But somehow I still manage to come this far.

When I asked for some evaluation on how I planned to get through a difficult course in the master program, my sempai who is also a tarot reader told me to try to copy what my peers did instead of just analyzing how they did.

His answer makes me think back about how managed to get through every test and exam in the past.

I'm not a creative person. I tried to make some OCs and lores for them but it went nowhere. I did better when I wrote some fanfics for the HxH and AoT fandoms. And I also draw more comfortably when I make fanarts rather than original artworks. Plus, I learn to draw by mimicking how some artists draw. I try to mimic how they draw the hair, the eyes, the hands, etc. because I don't know how to draw the characters by myself. I actually had to look at a lot of fanarts for Rufus, Cloud and the Turks before I drew them for the first time. Is this some form of cheating? I'm not so sure myself. But I can't help it. It's the only way I know to learn how to draw.

I think I have been unconsciously mimicking how my former teachers taught me too.

Today is not an exception. There was an assignment that I had no idea how to complete. The lecturer asked us to make a lesson plan. I had to read every answer from my classmates and try to understand what they did and why they did that. And then I did the assignment using their answers as a template. Luckily, I was able to make my own lesson plan in the end.

So, at least for now, mimicking is my way to struggle through this journey.

I can't make anything from scratch. I can only mimic what other people do and then try to make something (kinda) new from that by adding a little bit of my touch.

I usually tell my students to mimic how native speakers use English to communicate more naturally. I guess I also should use that advice.

Hello! I wanted to say that is how I see what would have happened if Megatron had been there when Eren said his infamous words to Mikasa.

Eren: Mikasa, I always hated you.

Everyone: *Gasps and yells of shock*

Megatron:

Eren: Megatron!? Why are you here?! *Memories don't show Megatron here*

Megatron: I was curious what kind of lie you would see, and I see a blatant one!

Eren: I am telling the truth! I hate Mikasa!

Megatron: Really? Then why do you still have her gift? *points at the red string*

Eren: . . .

Megatron: In addition, you asked Wrecker to take a picture of Ackerman when she was wearing her pink kimono.

Everyone: A pink what?

Mikasa: *blushing*

Eren: *Angry blush* Fuck.

On a more serious note, besides the obvious that it was a blatant lie from Eren, I never understood WHY you included that after you answered my question about Eren planning his death in AOP. After some thought, I remembered the memories he saw, one of Optimus's death and another of older Mikasa without her scarf while holding something, and that was before Founder powers were activated so he had limited idea but he could get some clues, and in conclusion:

He starts the Rumbling -> he kills Optimus -> Mikasa kills him to stop Rumbling.

So while he did not plan his death, if he gets killed by Mikasa, he will at least make it easier for her to kill him. Because whatever you can say, both of these dummies loved each other deeply, and you could believe Mikasa is obsessed with Eren, with my limited knowhow of AOT, I gained a sense that those two truly loved each other, Mikasa was just very overprotective of Eren, something you already tackled in AOP, but I can see that at the end of AOT, she could not let go completely of Eren, at least move on, even when Eren in the Cabin Moment, where he said after death she need to forget him and live freely. In AOP, while I don't think she can find love again, at least one as deep as she had with Eren, given she said that part of her still loves him, she can move on and live freely. But that part with love is my own opinion.

First of all, incorrect quote is hilarious.

Second of all, this is once again from the perspective of a manga reader waiting on a month to month basis for answers on what would happen next regarding the next chapter. Theories were running rampant, everyone had something to say, half of the fandom wanted Gabi dead, all that stuff.

It was around chapter 105's release, Sasha's death, and Eren's reaction that I had concluded that Eren was going to activate the Rumbling in full, and I wanted Optimus to be the one to kill him. To be hailed as a Savior from the stars. Mikasa had no real role to play when it came to Eren's death.

I also had no real thoughts of Eren being able to even the whole future. Hell, Eren being able to see into the future was just a theory, and we were never even given a full explanation on how Eren was even able to accomplish seeing the whole thing. Sure, he touched Zeke, but we've always seen memories in increments and gaps. Kruger was only able to reference Mikasa and Armin by name. We didn't even know if he was ever able to see their faces.

Before then, as I've stated, I was going to have Eren set everything up to have Optimus become the hero, but the backlash that happened in chapter 139 made me reconsider and rewrite stuff. Making Eren go the nihilistic route like Jobu Tupaki in Everything, Everywhere, All At Once. If everything is the same, over and over, then let him be selfish. Let him end it all.

In regards to Eren seeing a future with Optimus' death, the death would have remained that way had it not been for the interference and hard work of others. Again, we're never given a full run down on Eren's future visions, we didn't know he was seeing all of it instead of increments. Personally, I thought that Eren would be trying to change the future, because he was able to change the past in the cave. But the way that it was written in chapter 139, it made it seem like the future was set in stone and couldn't be change. It creates this cruel irony that Eren never really had freedom to begin with. Everything was decided. But it takes away Eren's choice. Almost like it absolves him? There are other snk critics that can explain it a lot better than I can. But I was leaning more towards the route of "the future can be changed, but Eren refused to do the work to change himself and the future". He refused to grow.

But there was a lot of discourse regarding Eren's feelings for Mikasa when the chapters were being dropped.

Prior to the Marley arc, it was clear that Mikasa had feelings for Eren, but it was never really clear if Eren held those same feelings. Sure, Eren did care for Mikasa, but people questioned whether or not it was platonic or romantic.

The time skip when the manga chapters were being dropped didn't help much with the discourse either. People were taken aback by the sudden whiplash in new characters, waiting for months on end for the Survey Corps to return. Everyone was questioning Eren's motivation. Why did he make the switch? Why did he go off grid? People had more questions that just weren't being answered.

And then chapter 112 dropped, where Eren flat out stated that he hated Mikasa because she was a slave. Note, we're still not given any information about the Ackermans, and we'll never really get it at this point, but many people around this time speculated that Mikasa and Levi's fierce devotion to the people they cared about, Eren and Erwin respectively, was because of them being an Ackerman. They had to have someone to serve. But everyone had something to say regarding Eren's words. Some believed that Eren genuinely meant those words, since recent behavior showed him lashing out and ignoring everyone and killing indiscriminately. Some believed that Eren was saying it to push Mikasa and Armin away, since his main goal was to enact the Rumbling, and he wouldn't want them to get caught up in it. Some just really wanted Mikasa to drop kick Eren in the face and burn the scarf.

But the discourse continued. People debated how much of Eren's feelings were real month after month. People debated whether or not Eren did love her. Some said yes. Some said no. Eren genuinely hating Mikasa or saying that to push Mikasa away were both real possibilities in that moment. There were moments of Eren seeing Mikasa from his perspective that pushed the argument that Eren did love her, but he still got her caught up in the Rumbling mess and forced her hand into killing him. I tried to rectify Eren's unclear feelings in AOT by having a few more moments in AOP, major one being the bracelet and Primus calling him out.

I don't deny Mikasa having feelings for Eren. She loves him. Full stop. But being a traumatized soldier will obviously interfere with her own emotional growth and feelings. I can't deny that. As a manga reader; however, Eren's feelings weren't clear until chapter 139, and when that dropped, oh boy the BACKLASH WAS WILD! I can understand Eren revealing his feelings like that, especially when he knows he's going to die soon and he is also an emotionally stunted teenager with a tremendous about of power. But to have someone commit to the bit of genocide and whine like a child in that moment, was despicable because of how many lives he's ruined and taken. How many people loved and cared and were killed needlessly, innocent and guilty? There's still the matter of Marley and the world's hatred, and Eren still wanting to protect the island to the extreme. But even Eren had to know deep down that killing the outside world wasn't the solution, especially when there was still infighting in the Walls without the knowledge of humanity not being extinct.

Even so, I didn't want Mikasa to continue to hold onto Eren so fondly like in the manga and anime. She had to draw a line for herself, especially with what he's done. Obviously, it would still be hard for her to move on. She's loved Eren ever since he wrapped that scarf around her neck, so it's still going to take time for her to move on and heal, which is something I want to explore in the Future Anthology.

But, I'd recommend for you, since your knowledge of AOT is limited, to look at different AOT analysis videos and essays to help you get a better understanding of what was going on, and give you a better idea of what people liked and didn't like about AOT. You can type in "snk (chapter number ie: 139)" for example on tumblr and you will get results from people that liked the ending or disliked the ending.

I hope that answers everything. There's a lot to discuss regarding the SNK discourse, so if you do decide to look into that, I do advise you to be careful because...it can get nasty in there.
