The last time I took LSD, some of my friends were over doing whippets- that is, nitrous oxide, AKA laughing gas; the dental anesthetic. It is literally N2O and has a very brief effect of classical dissociative effects distantly related to PCP, Ketamine, DXM.

I was initially apprehensive to try it because (A) it is an inhalant and (B) the conspicuous consumption / wastefulness of it, and (C) the compulsive redosing aspect that it brings out of users. I watched these guys with their clown balloons laughing it up and doing nang after nang and hearing how it lowered the pitch of their voices and made them laugh. . .

So I eventually decided to sip one like it was a beer while I was across from them, sitting with my legs straight out on the floor. Because I was sipping it, I barely "got off." It left this dissociated association of the balloon to my lips and this balloony-ness, and my legs felt extra warm and extra long. Since I was on LSD, the colors, especially the burgandy of the carpet and the reds and purples on the blanket became brighter and more textural, sounds became brighter, and the white background of the wall seemed to have a faint overlay of grid-like shadows with tiny pinwheels at each intersection of lines. I barely noticed the visuals on the wall consciously, I just assumed it's how the wall looked at the moment and thus was totally normal.

Still though, the constant redosing didn't sit quite right with me- it seemed less sketchy to me to see somebody take a fat line or toke or pill and that was that for hours. Anyway, about 2 weeks later, I was with the same crew. I had taken a moderate dose of edible cannabis and the prospect of doing nitrous again was looming despite my internal and external denial. I know the situation is so typical of inviting a new drug into your life - acting coy, peer pressure, getting it for free... it seems like these "gremlins" invite themselves and each-other into your life.

In my mind, a full dose of nitrous is like "DMT" in that it's an instant breakthrough, so I had to mentally prepare for what I expected could be a breakthrough into something totally unknown.

So I finally ended up with the last half of one of the last balloons pinched between my fingers and I was seated on a very comfortable leather couch in a room with the gentle roar of an air conditioner. I made peace, mentally, said my prayers, and took a lungfull and held it in.

On either side of me, a static haze of white enveloped my body, my legs and arms were amorphous warm black hollow protrusions into this white static. The sound of the air conditioner was all encompassing and inseparable from this white misty feeling of peace. I slowly moved my appendages up and down in this static, which evoked an unbelievable sense of stillness. Weightless, and with very little thoughts. The weirdest thing about it is that I didn't notice I had come up on the nitrous until I was there, enveloped in it. The feeling is quite delirious in that I didn't really have this meta-narrative of drug-taking or coming up or checking for new sensations or anxiety, which dominates my thoughts in the taking and the onset of most other substances I have tried. Very strange.

It didn't feel very much like DXM in that it lacked the same serotonergic clammy sense of the skin, the drunk feeling, and the visual geometry was significantly simpler and less solid . . . it felt very "clean," very simple dissociation. It felt less pensive than DXM as well.

In a minute or so I was back down, and I've been thinking about that moment on that couch a lot ever since. I'm impressed. I don't think I would be eager to buy any of this stuff any time soon because it seems wasteful and addictive, but it was certainly interesting, and I think I might be willing to actually try a whole balloon.
