I wanted to bring to your attention this excellent documentary on spring Chinook salmon. They're one of the most endangered of the Pacific salmonids, and they face a variety of threats, from dams to climate change. They also have unique behaviors and traits that set them apart from other salmon, and recent genetic research shows that they're different even down to the level of their DNA.
It's only an hour long, and very well done; if you aren't able to just sit and focus on something for that long, it's good either watched in bite-sized chunks, or having on in the background while you do chores, art, etc. And while it does highlight some distressing realities, it leaves on a hopeful note, IMO.

I bought myself Planet Earth III as a treat this month and it finally arrived after a long delay, and oh my god y'all need to see this.
There is an entire section on maned wolves. And not only that, but the behind the scenes at the end of that episode is also about the maned wolf section.
THERE ARE BABIES Y'ALL.
MANED WOLF PUPPIES.

i like to put nature documentaries on mute on my tv while i'm doing work or whatever random things around the house (muted bc i will get Distracted and not do tasks and just watch them otherwise, or bc i have an audiobook running) but i've rotated through the ones I have easy access to a bunch of times... anyone has recs for others i'd love them. i wish there were more that had only music/sound design/animal noises with no narration but i know those are really rare
right now i have access to hulu, prime, paramount+, maaaaybe max and disney? idr if the friend who had that cancelled it or not lol. but i get random cycling access to lots so any streaming service is fine and i'll just keep a list for whenever I have access so can change up my routine.
things i have already watched a Lot of times
Planet Earth (1 and 2)
Blue Planet
America's National Parks
Earth Moods
Cretaceous Past
also various livecams but honestly it's hit or miss if anythings happening and then i get FOMO if the animals are on screen and i can't pay attention so it's easier to have just recorded things i can replay at will forever
#there was one i cannot for the life of me remember the name of and i forget what platform i watched it on#but one episode just featured walruses dying over and over again and it was miserable to watch so if u kno what that one was. not that#im fine with predation deaths but man that one was bleak. they were just falling off cliffs they kept trying to inexplicably climb#ramblings#should i have a tag for when i ask for recs probably. i always lose them in the depths of my other ramblings#hmmm#polling the masses#nature documentaries

I grew up watching British & Russian nature documentaries and now watching some of these American ones is like pulling teeth. Is there anyone else out there who absolutely hates how these docs cut away from the animals/narration to show the scientists. I'm asking this as someone who actually is a researcher in the STEM field. I hate it with a fiery passion please tell me I'm not alone, why can't these people get through one sentence without cutting to some random specialist to explain obvious concepts to the audience like they're talking to toddlers? Or just reiterating what the narrator just said.

is the filming process of nature documentaries unethical
I think it will depend on the crew and the director to be honest, I don’t think any blanket answer will suffice. There are some obvious ethical issues like using captive animals, staging incidents, demonising predators, harassing or disrupting animals etc. These can and do happen, especially when a production company is chasing ratings.
Nature documentaries can be done respectfully though. If a crew manages their footprint, don’t intervene in nature or disturb the animals they film, at least as far as possible, then I think that’s a worthwhile trade-off for the potential benefit of public education and conservation. There are problems inherent with this kind of film-making that are difficult to navigate, but I do think they can do a lot of good when done right.
It should be remembered that nature documentaries provide valuable education and can be a powerful tool of environmental and animal advocacy. A good documentary can spark a lifelong love of the subject, I think my love of Attenborough as a kid had a big impact on me growing up. In the absence of zoos, which should be opposed, they’re the only insight most people will get into the lives of wild animals.

I used to say that I liked to watch nature documentaries because I didn’t know the more popular shows at the time. Now, they’re actually my favorite types of show to watch because you can come in mid season and you’d still know what’s going on! That doesn’t happen in most tv shows! You have to start at the beginning for those! With nature documentaries it’s just, look at that fish! He’s really cool!!! And then it’s thirty minutes of fun facts about said fish.

I watched too much of Netflix's Life on our planet before I realized it was stupid and I should watch something better
#like 25% of it is perfectly fine but it's both confusing and misleading#also americans can't help themselves from describing everything like wars or sports teams#nature documentaries#mine
