i think part of what makes the IDW Sonic supporting cast so endearing is how well they fit into the franchise as a whole. like the Archie Sonic characters were created by and large to match the SatAM continuity, which was created by and large to give context to things happening in the games because it was made at a time when audiences knew shit from fuck about these characters or their world... so those characters kinda retroactively just don't mesh with the games at all. they're adjacent to an adjacency to the main franchise, so trying to imagine them existing in the tone and context of the modern games doesn't line up.

but then you look at the IDW characters, and they are entirely, wholly made to fit into the same mold and world as the games without being redundant expies of existing characters. Surge might be "another rival to Sonic", but she fits a narrative purpose Shadow, Knuckles, and Metal Sonic completely don't; the stories you can tell with Surge and Kit are unique to them, and no other characters would fit those roles. same with Tangle and Whisper; they make the world feel lived-in, remind you that things are happening and having an impact on people whenever Sonic and co. aren't onscreen.

they also have that quality that Pit has in Smash Brawl, where they feel like they have this super storied history and evolution over the course of years that we just didn't get to see. until i actually read IDW you could've 100% convinced me the IDW-originals were all updated versions of forgotten side-characters from spin-off games like Dark Brotherhood or Rivals, and i think that says a lot about how well-conceived they all are.

Cara me e cari voi,

Questo è il mio primo post in assoluto e fin da ora mi scuso con tutti perchè andrò a briglia completamente sciolta! Ho pensato che sarebbe stato bello per me e utile scrivere qualche riga ogni volta che ne sento il bisogno, magari trovando chi mi risponde senza appesantire le persone che fanno parte della mia vita.

Mi capita di voler condividere qualche pensiero, qualche sentimento, frustrazione, commento piccato o eccitazione per qualcosa che leggo o faccio per poi finire per cancellare ciò che stavo scrivendo o non dire quello a cui stavo pensando per non pesare sugli altri. Perchè penso e penso sempre troppo e troppe cose, tra tutto ho sempre paura di dire o fare qualcosa che venga frainteso e che ferisca qualcuno, vi confesso che è una cosa che mi capita spesso specialmente ultimamente.

Mi farò troppe paranoie, troppe menate (si può usare il torpiloquio su questo sito? 🤣) ma è qualcosa che non riesco in nessun modo ad evitare e piuttosto che esplodere con le persone che amo scriverò qualcosa qui.

Parlando un po' di me: mi chiamano Luna, ho 35 anni, per ora lavoro in un bar (ma non è il lavoro dei miei sogni) e vivo nel nord Italia in un paesino di campagna.

Amo molto leggere libri, i videogames, dungeons and dragons (ma non ho nessuno con cui giocare) l'arte e per quanto io sia negata disegnare.

Se volete scoprire quali generi preferisco di entrambi, commentate qui e dissiperò le vostre curiosità 😆

Ho troppi troppi hobbies manuali come creare con resina, gesso, gomma siliconica, pasticciare con programmi di grafica come gimp photoshop procreate, amo l'uncinetto e ovviamente creare qualcosa di concreto (tazze, tshirt, segnalibri ecc...). Mi piace vedere un mio progetto che piano piano si realizza, mi da un senso di completezza e appagamento... se poi è anche apprezzato mi sento come una bimba la mattina di Natale!

Che altro dire... non sempre sono una persona estroversa, sempre per questa mia sorta di ansia sociale, ma sono una persona molto calorosa e senza mezze misure. Mi scaldo ed emoziono moltissimo per le cose che amo davvero!

Anche per questo non ho molti amici e come molti di loro mi dicono ogni tanto... io vado conosciuta e capita. Ed essendo loro tutti lontani per vari motivi ci sono delle volte in cui mi sento molto sola e ne sono completamente sopraffatta.

Infine tra le cose che non amo particolarmente ci sono le bugie (la fiducia per me sta alla base di qualunque cosa e preferisco la cruda verità sempre), la falsità e gli insetti 😅

Books of 2023: LOST IN THE MOMENT AND FOUND by Seanan McGuire.

Omg yay!! Okay so I'm knitting two rows per book that I finish in 2024, and each book rows will be a different color based on the genre it is

So here are the books I've read so far. Everything that's in bold is what I've knitted, and the last book on the list is what I'm currently reading but haven't finished yet. So I've knitted everything before Fifty Feet Down, and read everything up to Annie on My Mind, but I'm currently like thirty percent through it.

I'm choosing colors as I finish genres, and I'm trying to do it only with yarn I have (cuz yarn is expensive and I have a lot of yarn. The reason I have a lot of yarn suitable for a blanket is because I took all of this yarn from a blanket I started knitting four years ago and never finished. Like I finished frogging that blanket yesterday and made it into cakes on my new yarn winder!!) I didn't really try to make the colors fit the genres. I just own a lot of navy yarn and knew I'd read a lot of LGBTQ books, and I own a lot of black and know I'll read a lot of horror books. Then for dystopian I just chose a yarn color that I had available, same with mystery.

Here's how it's going so far! You can see the four navy rows for the two LGBTQ books i read, the two purple for the one dystopian book (which is also very good, I highly recommend Debate Kids at the End of the World and that author in general, Alex Nonymous) and then a chunk of black because I read four I. S. Belle books in a row (you can also see all of the ends I didn't weave in, which I'm going to hate myself for when I finish the blanket)

"But Austyn, what if the book is more than one genre?" I'm so glad you asked! Most of these books could be considered more than one genre. Fifty Feet Down is a mystery, but also a romance. So I just consider what genre I believe is more integral to the story, if that makes sense. Fifty Feet Down could be relatively the same if the main characters were just friends, but the story would be vastly different if it wasn't a mystery. Therefore, it gets the mystery color instead of romance. Same with all of the I. S. Belle books. There's romance in them, but if you took out the romance it would still be pretty similar, but if you took out the horror it would be an incredibly different story.

So that's my 2024 book blanket!

Writing Knitting Patterns – Is There Hope for a Creative “Pantser” Like Me?

I'm supposed to be working on knitting patterns. Clearly, I'm not. Is there hope for a "fly by the seat of your pants" creative like me?

Do you write knitting patterns? Do you love the process or – like me – feel your soul enter a state of utter dread when you even ponder such a thing? As I prepare the final draft of a new book, I know I need to include at least a few knitting patterns in this book (it’s a non-fiction how-to book). I know this, but I have yet to put pattern to paper. And yes, this is supposed to be a “final”…

New books new books! YAAAAY!!

I got some new books and I'm super excited to read them!!

The one on the left is 'Exquisite Exandria'. It's the cookbook that Critical Role came up with. Lots of tasty looking treats in there.

The one on the right is 'The Fellowship of the Knits'. Mom bought this one for my birthday. A Lot of these designs look challenging and cool!

I'll keep you updated on what I make out of these.
