i have watched 8 episodes of faithful by now and it's still really, really good. seriously, i don't always distinguish between "i like it" and "it's actually good" when i talk about some new thing i love but this is both.

i've seen it described as a "revenge drama" as if that were some kind of established genre and idk, maybe it is? but if it had been advertised to me as such, i would have thought it wasn't for me. who cares about revenge? doesn't sound interesting. however ... nie huaisang quickly became my favourite character from the untamed. hmm 🤔

the premise of this show is that a girl (in historical china) who tries to bring her rapist to justice fails to achieve her goal and dies. in response, her friend spends 7 years hatching an elaborate revenge plan. we don't immediately find out how the girl dies, how that man is able to get away with his crimes, who exactly is in league with whom among his various enablers or why, and of course what the revenge plan entails - everything is slowly revealed in segments alternating between past and present. i still don't know how she dies. love this story structure tbh

the protagonist (dead girl's friend) is absolutely delightful and also very easy to read as a lesbian or aroace. however, in the flashback segments we see that she starts out with some rather understandable flaws and her quest for revenge is likely motivated at least in part by regret for not having done more sooner. you see that in male characters so often, it's refreshing to see a female character get the same treatment!!

other than that, the ACAB vibes are off the charts for now. we'll see how that holds up throughout the story, but one of my favourite things is that there's this "good cop" guy who's honestly more of a Slightly Less Bad Cop because his heart is clearly in the right place but he's lazy about it and too much of a realist to do anything most of the time.

he ends up in prison for seven years with a broken leg that never healed right because he was overheard bragging about totally having helped that girl way more than he actually did. yep. that's all it takes

(hilariously, he is now also hell-bent on getting revenge, but mostly for his leg. like, he's got a concerning obsession with finding the main villain and breaking his leg in return, even though the people who did it were his former colleagues - he can see the big picture, he knows whose fault that really was. absolutely incredible)

recently an Actual Good Cop appeared (young and full of idealism), prevented various horrors from occurring, and was beaten up for his efforts. 7 years later, he seems ... hardened but true to his ideals? i'm curious to see how he managed to keep his job!

anyway, lots of good stuff here. it's a super heavy subject, but handled surprisingly well i think. hopefully most of that will stay true for the remaining 17 episodes...

Those of you who like a small Venn diagram of Justice League Unlimited/DCAU and my fics might remember a collection of ficlets back in 2010-2012, called Snapshot Collection. Well, a while ago I finished the long process of posting them on AO3! The entire series is there and appropriately called DC Snapshots. It has a collection of 200 words per work on average snapshots and then a dozen slightly longer works.

So, having started on 16th September 2022 and finishing (with a hiatus) on 17 July 2023, here’s Snapshot Collection!

Alternate list with summaries under the cut to make it dash-friendly, since I’m pinning this:

Ear Worm (Superman can honestly say that he loves music. But he likes a song a lot less if it’s continuously hummed while he’s on monitor duty.)

Encounter (When Batman meets the man Wally introduces as his uncle, he can’t help a slightly puzzling feeling of déjà vu.)

Fear (Wally hasn’t had his old stuck-in-super-speed nightmare for a while now – not since he defeated “Brainthor”. But he doesn’t know what he would give to have it back.)

First Date (The first time Linda went on a date with Wally West, something bugged her throughout the major part of the night.)

Games (Something John can never quite figure out is why on Earth Flash keeps picking the green Brawlin’ Bot whenever he manages to get Green Lantern or J’onn to play with him.)

Infuriating (“Wouldja stand still so I can properly kill you?!” Captain Boomerang yelled, thoroughly aggravated.)

Middle (When people talk about the ‘Big Three’ – Superman, Batman and Diana – and the ‘Less-Big Three’ – John, Flash and Hawgirl – they always seem to leave out J’onn.)

Nobody Dies (When Batman hears that a member of Flash’s “Rogue Gallery” was killed, he shows up in Central to check on the kid.)

Received Idea (It’s a well-known notion that if Flash can get to Italy for a pizza and China for Chinese takeout in a blink if he wants. Not exactly false, but not exactly right either.)

Selfless (Wally often hears people pointing out that selflessness is the chief virtue of a superhero. He disagrees. Having a lot of self had never kept him from doing the right thing.)

And then there’ll be the (longer) one-shots. I tried to put them in chronological order, even those where the timeline wasn’t that clear. Here’s what I came up with:

(Justice League)

Nickname (The first time that Flash calls him ‘Bats’, they're in the middle of a fight, and Batman has other things on his mind. The second time is another matter.)

Onomatopoeia (Diana doesn’t understand why Flash seems to mistake Batman for a disgruntled coyote, so Hawkgirl explains the subtleties of the Roadrunner cartoons.)

Gone (set during “A Better World”) (It’s been two years since the White House Incident and the change in the Justice Lords, and Lois wonders where Clark has gone.)

Prerogative (Flash wonders how come they almost never go to Gotham. When he stops to think about it, GL knows the answer.)

Company (set after “Eclipsed”) (At the end of the day, Flash reflects, it could have been a lot worse. Now, if only he could get some sleep…)

Mother (set during “Hereafter”) (For the first time since she was banished from the sunny shores of Themyscira, Diana feels cold.)

Dinner (It may not amount to much for Lex Luthor and his ilk, but tonight the Ultra-Humanite had everything: a perfect dinner with the most beautiful woman in the entire history of art.)

(Justice League Unlimited)

Return (Each step is hard, and every stare is painful. But Shayera Hol holds her head high and keeps her back straight.)

Sidekick (Ollie shook his head. “When did I become the uncool, Bruce?” Batman’s response was short and curt. “When you got yourself a sidekick.”)

Song (set after “This Little Piggy”) (Sure, Batman had specified to Zatanna that she couldn’t keep the video Circe recorded of his little jazz number – but he hadn’t said anything about the soundtrack.)

Draw (set before final scene of “Divided We Fall”) (In the aftermath of the Cadmus and “Brainthor” crisis, Superman asks Flash a question that’s puzzled him for years.)

Cape (“I’ve always wondered, Clark… You change into Superman in phone booths, right?… Where the hell do you keep your cape in that suit?”)

Mission (set during/before “I Am Legion”) (Copperhead and Atomic Skull can’t get caught. They’re on a mission from… you know the guy.)

Team (set during “Destroyer”) (Giganta felt herself blushing a tiny little bit as she climbed the Eiffel Tower and crushed a handful of Parademons. Darn it, but Flash had a cute smile.)

Glasses (Lois decides she’s had enough pretending, so she intentionally lets a not-so-innocent remark slip. Status quo be damned.)

Door (As a kid, knocking on a door and running and hiding always seemed the funniest thing to Wallace Rudolph West.)

Perfect Picture (If you were to ask Jimmy Olsen whether there are pictures of his he loves most, he’d say that everyone has its importance. But one in particular will always make him smile.)

Huh, look at that - it’s pretty balanced.

What are your hopes for the Dawn of the DCU relaunch? (Not necessarily what you think will happen)

Well ten books have been announced and ten more are coming. Here's my top ten other books I want to see:

Legion of Superheroes - Probably coming and will be written by Johns. His Legion work has been enjoyable for me but I have no clue if modern Johns would be just as enjoyable. Proably not but at this point he's the only one who could sell the Legion in the wake of Bendis' fourth failed reboot. Bring the Retroboot back, don't do any Watchmen or Hypercrisis bullshit and I'd likely enjoy it. For art I'd pair him with Eddy Barrows.

The Terrifics - Damnit I liked them and I want more DC teams that don't have a Bat or Super on them. Do a run with them off exploring the DC Universe, put Brandon Thomas on this and Fico Ossio on art.

Justice Legacy - Way better name than "Legacy League" but basically I want a JL book with the Dawn of DC legacies lineup: Jace, Damian, Jon, Jo, Yara, Avery, and Jackson. Maybe add a few more legacies like Jaime Blue Beetle, but I want to rest the classics for a while as Leaguers and try something new. Ideally I would like to see PKJ write this, he's got ambition and I like his Jon, and for art how about Juan Ferreyera.

Titans - I don't really care what they do, I just want Taylor on this as a way to force him out of the Superbooks where I can safely ignore him. Uh I guess Nicuolo on art.

Suicide Squad - GIVE THIS TO PRIEST ALREADY for fuck's sake he was born to write this book. Get back to supervillains doing the government's dirty work, the last two runs drifted too far away from what the Squad is supposed to be about. For art I'd want Ryan Ottley.

Superman/Wonder Woman - A Jon/Yara team up book by Dan Watters and Del Duca again. Watters did well with both during Future State and I hope reuniting the creative team again will likewise produce good work for both, God knows Jon and Yara could both use it. The Super and Wonder being close to each other as opposed to the traditional Super and Bat dynamic is a great difference between Jon and his dad.

Supergirl - Surprised they haven't announced a book for Kara already. She's going to be in The Flash movie after all, make synergy benefit me for once. Put Josie Campbell and Doc Shaner on this, their Mary Marvel book is great and Campbell loves Kara too.

Super-Man of China - Yang's back so I want him to write a 12 issue mini starring Kenan. If Taylor gets to use his Jon books to keep his OCs alive, I want to see Yang get the same privilege he's working with DC's new head architect Waid on the next big event. That should result in a book for Yang featuring my favorite Superman successor. On art I'd like to get Bogdanovic back for this.

Shadowpact - JLD is such a shitty name for such a cool team, let's use the good name. Watters and Doug Mahkne for this book, Watters can work with fantasy and magic just as well as Ram V going off of his Lucifer book, he's a natural successor to take over.

Zatanna: Mistress of Magic - How have we gone so long without a Zatanna book? Strange is coming to an end, poach Jed McKay from Marvel via signing a deal with Mephisto to erase whatever deal McKay has going on over there and bring him over to DC to do for Zatanna what he's done for Clea. Give me Zatanna on a tour of Dc Mystic, cement her and Diana's friendship as the equivalent to the Superman/Batman partnership, and have fun! Zatanna is the only Dc Mystic character who isn't an alcoholic, let's try to remind people why that is. On art I'd put Yannick Paquette.

Read Young Justice 98 by Peter David and New Super-Man and the Justice League of China by Gene Luen Yang. Especially New Super-Man. It's a great series if you want a young Superman learning the ropes.

Wang's body type & blues are a neat change of pace as Bats go. Ditto for Alpaca in the "horrifying but somehow fresh Joker derivative" department.

Once again I have to point toward canon comics for the great designs! Justice League of China has some of the strongest modern designs in the DCU and I really hope we can see more of them in the future. I loved the entirety of Yang’s New Super-Man
