So I had three annoying things happen to me today, one of which made me deeply disappointed and angry. I already vented elsewhere about that though. I'm supposed to be winding down, so for the sake of my mental health I'm going to share the good things that managed to happen today.
Renewed my library card for a specific purpose and made my mom happy by allowing her to use it to check out some Stuart Wood books for herself
Managed to successfully use my library card to connect to the Libby app despite my state/county having a subpar collection of digital ebooks to choose from. I ended up borrowing Nikki Grimes' memoir in verse Ordinary Hazards. She's an influential poet for me, so I was delighted to find this.
Cheered myself up by watching Detective Pikachu. It was enjoyable, even though I had issues with how the antagonist was written.

Middle School Monday: Garvey’s Choice: The Graphic Novel by Nikki Grimes illustrated by Theodore Taylor III
Garvey’s life has plenty of amazing potential, but he’s still unhappy. His father is upset that he isn’t an athlete, and the other kids at school bully and tease him. Garvey loves reading science fiction and playing chess, and he’s fascinated by astronomy. But it’s not until his best friend encourages him to join the chorus that one of his interests creates a connection that helps other people understand and admire him. This story tackles a lot of tough subjects, including family problems, bullying, overeating, and anxiety.
Garvey’s Choice was originally written as a novel in verse, telling a story through a series of tanka poems. This graphic novel version uses those same poems with just a few changes, and incorporates illustrations by Theodore Taylor III that will introduce this story to a whole new audience.
This is an inspiring and uplifting story about learning how to accept yourself. It’s a great book to read and think about, or to spark a discussion!
Give this book to older kids and younger teens who enjoy novels in verse, as well as characters who overcome obstacles on their life’s journey.

I'm very happy that my Nib comic about book bans is going to be included in this new anthology edited by Ashley Hope Pérez coming March 2025 from Holiday House!
This bold collection of fiction, memoir, poetry, graphic narratives, essays, and other genres explores book bans through various lenses, and empowers teens to fight back. From moving personal accounts to clever comebacks aimed at censorship, fifteen authors and illustrators confront the high-stakes question of what is lost when books are kept from teens.
Contributors include Elana K. Arnold, Nikki Grimes, Ellen Hopkins, Kelly Jensen, Brendan Kiely, Maia Kobabe, Bill Konigsberg, Kyle Lukoff, MariNaomi, Trung Lê Nguyễn, Ashley Hope Pérez, Isabel Quintero, Traci Sorell, Robin Stevenson, and Padma Venkatraman; the collection is a star-studded must-read that packs strength and power into every last word.
Striking illustrations from Ignatz-nominated artist Debbie Fong pair perfectly with the searing, impactful narrative. Resources include tips from the Vandegrift Banned Book Club and other teen activists, as well as extensive recommended book lists, a How to Start Your Own Little Free Library flier, and more.

Stars in Our Hands: A Playlist
Meet Estrella Diaz. She’s tough, she’s fierce, she’s unbreakable.
She’s soft hearted, she’s gentle, and she’s terrified.
Estrella is a sex worker, specifically a prostitute, and is stabbed one night in a transphobic hate crime. Obviously, love and romance are the last thing on her mind right now.
But Dani, the kind paramedic who helped to save her life, who corrected everyone on Estrella’s pronouns without ever being asked, who did everything in her power to make sure Estrella was safe and comfortable before moving on to her next call?
The thought started seeping in anyway.
But it’s just the trauma, Estrella thinks. It’s just because someone was finally treating her with the gentleness she’s always wanted.
But it turns out, feelings aren’t that cut and dry, and after she goes home, Estrella aches to see Dani again.
