hey so i’m really wanting to make a book/field guide of my art and i was wondering what your process is from creating an art piece all the way to getting a zine-style physical copy of your work? i was inspired by your zines so i thought i’d ask you about it. what websites do you use? how do you like,,, talk to a business to get stuff from the digital illustration into a (relatively small) book?
also this is a personal project to fuel my hyperfixation so i’m not looking to like,,, produce in bulk or anything lol.
thanks :)
for my larger-quantity zines I used mixam.com! they're a print company that specializes in booklets and catalogs, and everything on the production side can be dealt with online. I've had very good experiences with their customer service (I was put through to a real person on their chat function almost instantly when i needed an answer to a more in-depth question) and their prices are really good imo, especially for bigger quantities! They also have pretty high customization options--you can choose the weight and type of your paper, multiple types of binding, etc.
if you go that route, though, all of the graphic design and layout is on you. I'd recommend getting indesign or a similar program to help you lay out your booklet, so you can keep all your pages in one easily-accessible, editable file. (and remember that in order to be printed as a booklet your page count MUST be a multiple of 4!) mixam (or whatever printer you use) will usually give you a template that lets you know exactly how much bleed and gutter space you're working with, and you can then input those numbers into indesign. (If you do this, make sure you export your final pdf WITHOUT CROP MARKS, because your printer will add their own crop marks later on.) once you've arranged your booklet the way you like in indesign, export it as a pdf (in single pages, not spreads, and make sure your pages are in sequential order rather than optimized for booklet printing; it's on your printer to do that step for you!) and upload that pdf to your printer. Mixam gives you a few days to check over your work and either confirm it's correct or cancel the order, and then once you've confirmed it goes into production. more pages and more complex printing will be more expensive, but i've had nothing but good experiences buying from mixam and if i ever selfpub again i'm definitely going to be using them!
#mixam does also technically let you upload straight jpegs to their site but i would not do that ever. use pdfs trust me#your image quality will thank you#asks#side note if you have your own home printer you can also look into binding your own work!! i do a lot of that for my smaller-quantity#projects for like school and stuff. because it's significantly cheaper lol#and it's not very hard especially with a lower page count like all you really need is a stapler a ruler and a razor blade

i found some wacky way to make borderless printing work...!!! it's not perfect but idk it might b ok enough until i can get a decent guillotine cutter and cut a bunch of sheets at once to size. I'll try experimenting with printing my comics and stuff sometime!!!!!
#blab#like again it won't b amazing quality bc i'm just diying at home but my printer prints decent images and i'm too embarrassed to work with#a printing company for my comics (????)#idk what's up w me having to do some obscure-o method to make borderless printing work tho#couldn't do it in ms word even w borders turned off. maybe they have sth programmed in to make it not work (?)#couldn't do it from the default windows image viewer or wtv bc my printer's dialog box wouldn't open even when i clicked 'more settings'#i had to. save as a pdf. open in a web browser. open the browser's printer dialog. click 'use the system printer dialog' which opens the#windows printer dialog box. click 'more settings' on that which then opens my printer's dialog box somehow in that context only.#check the borderless printing option there. and then print. so CONVOLUTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#idk if dialog box is the right word. idk how to describe computer things. i mean like the printing options window.

Pattern from @palaeoplushies
This was quite the project! The pattern was a bit more complex then I'm used to, and I've never painted fleece, or any fabric for a project before! I made quite a few mistakes WHY ARE YOU PIGEON TOED?! but I think the end project looks good enough! Believe it or not this is the half size version, I can't imagine how big the original size must be!

Appreciation for the stripes (made from watered down dnd mini paints >_>, waste not want not)

#handmade plush#tasmanian tiger#thylacine#my art#fun fact my printer is acting up so I traced the pattern from the pdf on my computer screen#not very smart but whatever#why is the last one's background so weird

Tell me more about this two women of London business,,,,
It's a retelling by a feminist Scottish author called Emma Tennant set in the 80s that centres on an almost entirely all female cast. It's also told entirely as an epistolary narrative. The plot centres around the figures of Ms Eliza Jekyll, the manager of a recently created gallery who's very 'girl boss feminism' and has also conspicuously not aged since all her old friends last saw her, and Mrs. Hyde, an impoverished mother of two who Really Hates Men and is inexplicably hideous for undefinable reasons. It's a pretty good retelling that uses the whole Jekyll-Hyde thing to explore womanhood under patriarchy and second wave discussions like 'should female success be measured by how far someone advances through the preexisting system or how much they dismantle it?' It does have some discussions of SA because it takes place against the historical backdrop of The Notting Hill Rapist but it's never anything too prominent or upsetting. Overall it's pretty good but idk how much it's in print anymore. The copy I own is a hand-me-down from my mother so if you're interested I wish you luck with finding it.
#i would convert my version into a pdf but the scanner on my printer isnt working and im also in exams so i dont really have the time#but i imagine another version is out there somewhere#it might even be on the internet archive#anyway hope this helps#strange case of dr jekyll and mr hyde

We crave simplicity. Technological advancements are awesome but the everyday person doesn't need a top of the line computer to pay their bills, send emails, and play solitaire, and we certainly don't need a digital assistant for it. I observe more and more people opting for "outdated" means, including myself. It looks like the vast majority of people are rejecting AI. Even further, several people are reverting to old processors to run old products using old software to avoid the mining and selling of our information and the invasion of privacy that you have to agree to in every privacy policy out there today just to do something as simple as sending an email. Some of us genuinely miss the days before you had to be suspicious of every website you visited. We miss being able to go to a website and having all our needs met without making an account or paying a subscription. We miss being the sole owners of our digital property. We're starting to go back to using external hard drives and SD cards to save our data, we want to revive those old desktops with Windows 8, we want to send an email without getting a sponsored ad about something we mentioned, and we just want to use a damn printer that you plug straight into the computer and you don't have to connect via Bluetooth or pay a monthly subscription to the software! Don't even get me started on cloud subscriptions. That'll be a separate post.
#the digital age is temporary#i miss windows vista#computers#intellectual property#sd cards will save the world#i paid for that damn printer now just print#internet#software#can i save a pdf to my computer without chrome thinking it owns it
