Do you know if there's an archive for the 2022 ParaNorman watch party with Chris Butler they hosted for the anniversary? I remember he said a bunch of fun facts that I wrote down but I'd love to have exact quotes for them (like how he'd love to see more Salma if they ever revisited the universe and Norman does actually have the potential to become like Aggie if he let his hate and anger take over him)

Norman probably, though i also just love the relationships he has with the people around him.

His sister Courtneys a bitch but in the end she clearly does care about him a lot and is the one to stand up for him, also shes just So funny. Alvin becomes an unlikely friend cuz he's also pathetic and weird in his own ways. Mitch! Its such a stupid twist but it was also 2012 and i love him for it. Neil is so sweet and a little dumb and I wish Salma had more time to be developed too. And oh my gosh his grandma!! I love her. And also the zombiess are fascinating, and i cry every time over Aggie. I even like Mr. Penderghast!

I could rant and rave about this movie forever, and if i allow myself to think about it too long i well up with so much emotion i just shut down lol

-Normans mother used to have the same ability but it transferred to him (uncle prenderghast never procreated so he kept his lol)

-neils parents are usually at work so hes a free spirit most of the time besides braindead babysitting from mitch. hence why hes usually able to get away with just wandering about

-norman has schizophrenia lol. doesnt downplay his abilities tho, hes still a medium. but his hallucinations tend to based off stuff hes used to seeing (or demons) and his delusions tend to be religious or demonic issues.he was unmedicated for a long time because his parents always fought about it. (mother said maybe they shud get him checked out, father didnt want him labeled as a "nutcase" because it would be an embarrassment) until he probably accidentally hurt himself in the process of an episode.

-courtney is in volleyball,cheer,and gymnastics and shes pretty good at them.

-normans grandma is his main caretaker since he tries to avoid his parents because almost everytime hes near the both of them they end up arguing and hed rather just exclude himself. she cares for him deeply and tries her best to take care of him from beyond the grave

-alvin flunked. like hes in some of normans classes caus he straight up failed like two grades 💀

-salma and neil are actually really good friends and occasionally hang out together. shes still iffy abt neil tryna squeeze norman into their activities every once n a while and norman just feels awkward about it.

-Neil just wants his two best friends to also be friends but salma is super on edge abt it and normans just quiet and awkward and feels bad for "annoying" her

-neil has dyslexia and or adhd. idk where this came from it just feels real bro 😭😭

*- adding to the adhd thing, first time he mentions it to norman is by trying to make him feel less like a freak for also having to take medication. it kinda works

Wanted to clear up a little bit of lore with this comic. My headcanon has always been "Aggie is a poltergeist, therefore others can see her." But I feel like I never explained the concept before, so here it is. The last batch of comics I made were all up tying up loose ends, paying off plot points and worldbuilding. After such a long hiatus, I figured it was important.

With the publication of this comic, we're officially done with Season Nine! But don't worry, there's more coming soon. Me and my brother are working on a Halloween arc we think you guys are gonna love!

the laika rant

before i start: i fucking love laika. i love every single movie i’m about to bitch and moan about. i’ve seen each one multiple times and i’m going to continue to watch them.

laika is bad at diversity.

this shouldn’t come as a surprise, seeing as box trolls was, if my memory serves me correctly, entirely white, and the nonwhite characters in coraline and paranorman were used as comedic relief, which would be okay if there were other nonwhite characters but, alas, there weren’t any. not only are they bad in the race department, but also in the sexuality department. the jock brother from paranorman is gay, which would be great if it wasn’t portrayed as a “the hot ones are always gay” thing to scorn the bratty sister for pining after him the whole movie. 

its time to get more specific.

coraline: there’s not a lot wrong with this movie imo, it just bothers me that wybie seems like a token nonwhite character. feel free to add on if you’d like.

the boxtrolls: do i have to repeat it? it was literally only white people, and don’t come at me with that “it’s set in victorian england” and “its based off a british book” nonsense, as if the town they live in is real and poc didn’t exist. 

paranorman: buckle up, i have a lot to say about this movie. it was never my favourite laika movie, but all of this honestly solidifies its place in my Laika Movie Hierarchy sheriff hooper and salma are the only poc in this movie with speaking roles. sheriff hooper is a black woman used purely as comedic relief, shown as a slob, loud, and someone who acts without thinking. (i’m not a poc so please tell me if i’m overstepping with these next few sentences) this enforces harmful stereotypes against black women, mostly the “angry black woman”. salma is a girl of ambiguous south asian descent, shown as annoying, nagging, and undesirable, as shown with her glasses, upturned and large nose, and unibrow. none of these characteristics are unattractive in anyway, but we as a society have been conditioned to find these traits undesirable. courtney, norman’s sister, is your typical blonde bimbo who doesn’t care about anything other than the hot football quarterback (until the end of the movie anyway), which we all know is an overplayed and generally annoying stereotype. lets talk about neil, the hot jock who happens to be gay. his sexuality isn’t mentioned until the end of the movie, which is fine, but its treated less as a legitimate character trait and more as a joke to spite courtney, who had been chasing after him the whole movie. as a gay man this really pushes my buttons because we are so much more than twinks vs jocks and the dreaded aforementioned “why are the hot ones always gay” stereotype.

kubo and the two strings: despite being a movie based largely off japanese legends and actual japanese people (hanzo was a real dude! how about that), there is a huge lack of japanese voice actors, and many many japanese people have called it orientalist, racist, and basically bastardising. (search “kubo and the two strings” on @wearejapanese‘s lovely blog for more information on this, as its been a long day for me and cant remember everything i’ve seen) george takei is the only japanese person in the main cast, and he only voices a side character that’s in about three or four scenes, and of course they have him cash in his classic “ooh my”, because why wouldn’t they. the animation was beautiful and i loved the movie, but it’s insensitive and, with its large amount of white actors voicing japanese characters, whitewashing what couldve been an amazing story and source of representation for japanese americans  had it been done right.

does this mean i won’t watch anymore laika movies? honestly? i don’t know. if their game isn’t stepped up there’s a large possibility that i won’t be seeing another movie done by the studio, at least not in theatres or buying physical copies. again, if you’d like to add on to anything i’ve said, feel free.
