A Partial List of Commonly Misused Words
Using the wrong word, or misusing a phrase, can have a huge effect on your life. It can keep someone from hiring you, cause you to fail a test, or make readers of your fics lose interest. Words matter. Here are some of the most common mistakes, so you can avoid them in your writing:
The phrase: dog eat dog world The meaning: people will do harm to others to get ahead themselves Incorrect: doggy dog world The phrase: bear with me The meaning: bear, here, means 'to carry' not 'a furry ursine' Incorrect: bare with me (this means 'let's get naked together') The word: conscious/conscience The meaning: conscious means awake and aware, conscience means an inner sense of good vs bad Incorrect: His conscious told him not to do the thing. He regained conscience after being asleep. The phrase: free rein The meaning: loosening your grip on the reins so a horse has more freedom of movement/direction or allowing a person/character freedom from restraint so they can do whatever they want Incorrect: free reign (to reign is to rule. a ruler already has freedom to act) The word: lightning/ lightening The meaning: lightning is an electrical discharge from the sky, lightening means to make lighter or brighter Incorrect: thunder and lightening The word: tidbits The meaning: small pieces of food or gossip Incorrect: titbits The word: breath/breathe The meaning: breath is what you exhale, to breathe is the verb form Incorrect: she took a deep breathe The word: spade/spayed/spate The meaning: a spade is a digging tool or a suit in a deck of cards or a slur, spay means to remove the internal genitalia of an animal to prevent pregnancy, spate means a torrent or multiple things happening in quick succession Incorrect: he couldn't make sense of her spade of words The word: tenet/tenant The meaning: a tenant is someone who lives in a rented space, a tenet is dogma, a principle or religious belief Incorrect: the tenant of her philosophy, landlords are cruel to their tenets The phrase: tough it out The meaning: to carry on with a task despite pain or difficulty Incorrect: touch it out, thug it out, tug it out The word: regiment/regimen/regime The meaning: regiment is a military formation, regimen is a strict plan of action related to health, regime is a period of dynastic rule Incorrect: my health regiment, the Trump regimen, etc. The word: exercise/exorcise The meaning: exercise is to work out, exorcise is to banish Incorrect: exercising one's demons, exorcising one's muscles The word: deprecating/depreciating The meaning: deprecating means disapproving or speaking poorly of, depreciating means lowering in value financially Incorrect: self depreciating, his stock portfolio is deprecating The word: heroin/heroine The meaning: heroin is an opioid drug, heroine is a female protagonist Incorrect: he is addicted to heroine, she is the heroin of this story Special note: a heron is a bird, not to be confused with either of the above The word: ulterior The meaning: hidden, something beyond what is obvious Incorrect: alterior motive (alterior is not a word) The word: weary/wary The meaning: weary means exhausted, wary means cautious Incorrect: she was weary and paranoid about his motives, he hadn't slept for days and was very wary The word: palette/pallet/palate The meaning: a palette is what an artist uses, a pallet is a wooden platform for loading goods, a palate is the roof of your mouth and is used idiomatically to refer to your taste for food/sensitivity to taste Incorrect: the gourmand had a sensitive pallet This is only a partial list, but hopefully this will help you be a better writer and reader! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you like what I write, I'm going through terribly hard times right now. Trump Bemoans the Injustice of No Consequences
This morning, I headed to chilly lower Manhattan to witness the criminal sentencing of Donald Trump. As I walked alone in the post-dawn quiet through Foley Square, where the borough’s courthouses are clustered, I read the inscription above the entrance to the New York State Supreme Court building: “The true administration of justice is the firmest pillar of good government.” It’s a line lifted from one of George Washington’s letters. Just up the block, in a courtroom on the fifteenth floor of the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse, this sentiment was about to be put through an extreme, absurd, test.
What’s a fitting punishment for a President who breaks the law? America has never been quite sure. Last spring, when Trump sat through a weeks-long trial in Judge Juan Merchan’s courtroom, it almost seemed like the rules would, finally, apply to him. Yes, he was the presumptive Republican Presidential nominee, and, yes, the trial was held under oppressively tight security restrictions, and, yes, Merchan gave Trump leeway to viciously bash the court, the prosecutors, the witnesses, and the jury in ways not typically tolerated from criminal defendants. But inside the courtroom the proceedings proceeded. Testimony was heard, evidence was introduced, a verdict was reached: guilty on all thirty-four counts of falsifying business records in the first degree, as part of a scheme to suppress damaging evidence from becoming public during his first Presidential campaign. That was the unanimous decision of twelve of Trump’s peers on May 30th.
Much has happened since. The sentencing in the hush-money case, which Merchan postponed several times during the election season, was like a bit of unfinished business from a time when the true administration of justice was the firmest pillar of good government. It had always been thought unlikely that this case would end with jail time, or some other serious consequence, for Trump. The November results insured it. Merchan was put in a bind: How to resolve the case that had resulted in a guilty verdict without impinging on Trump’s ability to be President? A potential solution presented itself in the idea of an “unconditional discharge,” wherein Trump’s conviction would stand, but the matter would be left there.
The hearing began at 9:30 A.M. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and his team of prosecutors were in the courtroom. Trump, with Merchan’s permission, appeared virtually, via Microsoft Teams. (Among other things, the Trump sentencing may be remembered as the apex of the W.F.H. era in this country.) He was sitting next to his lawyer, Todd Blanche, whom he has nominated to serve as Deputy Attorney General in his second term. Trump’s face appeared on screens mounted on the courtroom walls.
Joshua Steinglass, an Assistant District Attorney, spoke first. He excoriated Trump, accusing him of breeding “disdain” for the rule of law, and of putting those involved in the trial in “harm’s way.” “This defendant has caused enduring damage to public perception of the criminal-justice system,” Steinglass said. Still, he acknowledged, the defendant was about to become the President. As such, the District Attorney was seeking a sentence of unconditional discharge.
Blanche went next. “I very, very much disagree with much of what the government just said about this case,” he said. He reiterated arguments Trump’s defense team had made before, about the timing and the motivations underlying the case. He suggested that the votes of tens of millions of citizens should outweigh the verdict of twelve jurors. It was a “sad” day for Trump, Blanche said, and for the country. Nevertheless, he, too, requested that Merchan issue an unconditional discharge.
Then it was Trump’s turn. While Blanche was speaking, Trump was mostly frowning, and looking off camera. Occasionally, he leaned and his face went partially out of view, like a doddering grandfather during a family Zoom. During the trial, he had not testified in his own defense, and in the courtroom he’d stayed mostly silent, save for the occasional outburst of muttering or sighing, for which Merchan repeatedly admonished him. Now he had the floor. “This has been a very terrible experience,” he said. “The fact is, I’m totally innocent. I did nothing wrong.” He referred obliquely to Michael Cohen, his former lawyer who became one of the prosecution’s star witnesses in the trial. “He was allowed to talk as if he were George Washington,” Trump said. “But he’s not George Washington.”
Merchan, sitting on the bench, looked impassively on through all of this. When it finally came time to render judgment, he began by thanking the court clerks, officers, and staff. Then he acknowledged his bind. Because Trump was about to become President, he explained, the “only lawful sentence that permits entry of a judgment of conviction” was an unconditional discharge. “Sir, I wish you godspeed as you assume a second term in office,” Merchan said. Then, the unpleasant task finished, he quickly left the courtroom. The live-stream screens went blank, and the prosecutors filed out. The first criminal trial of a former and future President was over.

COD Fic // Callsign: Sunshine // Chapter 10: Father's Daughter
hello hi yes more angsty hand holding in this chapter UR WELCOME I had to do a lil bit o' research for this one to make sure all my i's were dotted n' shit, so I am hopeful everything comes across in a way that tracks with reality as much as possible and it all makes sense and also that u love it and honestly if u don't that's really none of my business
Callsign: Sunshine // Chapter 10 // Father's Daughter
.................................................................. CWs: Explicit language, vague mentions of past trauma and recovery, descriptions of guns
Characters: Simon "Ghost" Riley, Reader (You), Kyle "Gaz" Garrick, Johnny "Soap" MacTavish
Chapter Excerpt:
"You won't find it anywhere. It doesn't exist."
Soap frowns. "What d'you mean?"
You stare at them -- these men you hardly know. They seem so earnest. You hate that. You hate that you only have one thing to offer them -- a measly supply of information relative to your crazed scientist father's end-of-life havoc-wreaking.
You tighten your grip on Ghost's fingers, and he runs a comforting thumb along your pinky.
"Toward the end... My father...he got more and more erratic. His behaviors, his decisions. They didn't make sense. He wasn't himself."
Gaz leans forward on his elbows, nudging his bowl to the side. "In what way?"
"He stopped taking my calls--"
"Because you were discharged?"
You try not to feel the sting of that word on someone else's tongue, but it's hard. Even after all this time.
"Partially, maybe," you ponder. "But he'd been deteriorating even before that. I'd thought he was just manic -- obsessed with the task at hand. That wasn't entirely out of the ordinary. But he was taking shortcuts he wouldn't normally. He told me one day that..." You trail off. The memory is like a bloodstain.
"Dad...dad, slow down."
"It's the breakthrough of a century, Sunny," your father speaks to you through rough, choppy pants, as though he's got blades in his lungs. He's been chain-smoking again.
"This...this will be my legacy," he goes on. "Everything I've worked for, everything I've done. Nothing will top this. It's perfect -- it's the perfect specimen, I know it is."
"Dad, what about trials?"
"I don't fucking need trials! We'll go strai--"
"But, you're pre-clinical, you can't proceed on humans without testing the potential implicatio--"
"Who the fuck do you work for, the FDA? I don't have to do shit!"
"But the ethics of jumping straight to--"
Your father's voice is as cold as you've ever heard it when he cuts you off again. "Integrity without knowledge is weak and useless, Sunny. You know this."
There's a momentary, bitter pause as you digest his words. Words you know, words he's recited to you a hundred times. "Dad," you plead. "There's anoth--"
"Goodbye, Sunny."
The line goes dead.
The sensation of Ghost squeezing your knee again brings you back to the present.

Lakeside
Lakeside - Chapter 1 - benignmilitancy - Silent Hill (Video Game Series) [Archive of Our Own]
Fandom: Silent Hill Characters: James Sunderland; Douglas Cartland; Heather Mason; Paul Scheible (Homecoming) Relationships: Douglas Cartland & James Sunderland (platonic); Douglas Cartland & Heather Mason (platonic) Genre: Angst; mystery; psychological horror; partial epistolary POV: Third-person present (alternates between James, Douglas, and memos)
Content warnings: Blood
Summary:
James Sunderland doesn't remember why he'd driven his car into the lake. He can't explain why he was rescued, or what led to his decision, but he clings to the hope that someone will help him piece it together before hell freezes over. Douglas Cartland swore he'd never set foot in that godforsaken town again. That vow gets tested when Toluca Lake begins freezing in the middle of summer, against all logic and reason, and resurrects the drowned man he'd given up for dead.
Or, "Nature is healing. Hell is freezing over."
Prologue.
"What you see behind me isn't water. It's frost.
"Late yesterday afternoon in the town of Silent Hill, fisherman Joseph Wylam was angling near this spot over Toluca Lake when his boat capsized, its bow torn on a treacherous patch of rock.
"Wylam climbed a safety raft and tried to paddle his way to shore. However, when he lowered himself into the water, it wasn't the mild fifty-two degrees as is the average median temperature around this time of year, but a startling eight degrees Fahrenheit.
"Wylam suffered immediate shock and would have drowned had it not been for the intervention of his boating partner. Unfortunately, this wasn't enough to save him, as he later passed at Kindred Hospital of complications brought on by aggravated hypothermia. Wylam was fifty-six years old at the time and had no known next-of-kin. The partner, who prefers to remain anonymous, is expected to be discharged with a clean bill of health.
"Today, a light sheen of frost has laid across the entire lake surface, and is solidifying even as I speak with no apparent signs of stopping. As you can see, various forms of wildlife have fled the area.
"To say this is bizarre is an understatement, baffled locals claim. Researchers brought in to study Toluca Lake have called it the strangest phenomenon they've witnessed in years. Although they cannot yet determine why, they hypothesize the rock that overturned Wylam's boat may have been, in fact, a detached ice floe.
"We'll bring you more details as this investigation continues."
---
James Sunderland, who was declared missing along with his wife Mary in June of 1994, shivers in the thick vapor blanket paramedics have draped over his shoulders. The lake's sediment and composite minerals have bleached his hair a sickly bluish green.
Moisture caresses his grayed flesh. He's sat in the water for so long that most of his clothes have unraveled at the seams. His right jacket sleeve curls on the ground beside him, dwelling in the puddle he grows with the droplets he sheds.
They're attempting to pry the shell of a broken boat from an old vehicle. James watches machinery crack open the crushed and sodden remains of a teal Chrysler, watches flotsam spill over the pavement in a wash of decay, and asks whose car that is.
Yours, Mr. Sunderland.
James blinks, readjusting his swollen eyes to sunlight. Liquid overflows and runs down his gaunt, wrinkled cheeks, pinkened by blood.
I don't remember.
An EMT pulls down his lower eyelid, shining a beam directly into his socket. The iris takes a moment to get fixated, and the pupil's dilation response time is rather delayed.
What day is it? James asks.
Tuesday.
He nods, as if the answer holds some meaning.
One paramedic nudges the other. We've got to get this man to a hospital.
It's 2002. Commute thins as the roads wind through the hills. The firs surrounding the neighboring valleys sweep low, burying their roots deep within the slopes.
For a town whose reputation hinges on misfortune, this morning proves an extraordinarily rare and beautiful exception. Clear skies shine while local flora bursts with the green blossom of summer.
No mist radiates from Toluca Lake; today it resembles a placid mirror, reflecting the passing houses and various boats drifting on its surface. Police cruisers keep sentry for miles along its circumference, where officers standing before fluttering tape deny access to disappointed tourists.
The town basks in August beauty while ice creeps and crackles over the surface of the lake.
---
"Since yesterday, more floes have emerged, bewildering residents and investigators alike.
"Despite the torrid weather, a thin sheet of ice has completely covered the lake and appears to be expanding outward, reaching an estimated speed of 0.48 inches per hour. Where this ice came from, and why it has started a push, remain to be seen. Right now, those who live close to the shore are urged to evacuate inland until the state withdraws its declaration of emergency.
"The invasion appears to show no signs of slowing down. Here at Rosewater Park, brickwork and parts of the observation deck have already been claimed by ice. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to keep my balance on the slick ground, and you can feel the rapid plunge in temperature the closer you approach.
"All traffic to and from Silent Hill has been gridlocked for the time being."

I really do feel like I can go conspiracy about porphyria brain because so much "information" about it is just 100% factually incorrect

^ like. Skin blisters are a symptom of CHRONIC porphyrias. Because it's a whole ass family of diseases. The ACUTE porphyrias do NOT affect the skin!! They're incredibly different diseases, like the only thing in common is that symptoms are caused by porphyrins, everything else is wildly different.
And yet so many ArTiClEs conflate them. So yeah idk I'm automatically incredibly skeptical of porphyria information in the first place, so ofc i find it odd that there's now websites for acute intermittent porphyria drugs talking about how important the treatment is to prevent permanent damage, and now most other sites list all that permanent damage shit. I know i sound kinda crazy here, but i don't even think this is a case of intentional malice necessarily. I mean MAYBE it could be i guess, manufacturers influencing websites to make ppl more likely to think they need the treatments, but honestly my main theory is just that other sites ripped from the drug websites like they rip other widely circulated porphyria misinformation because it's so rare that there's almost no one calling it out
Like the whole porphyria historically being associated with vampires thing and it causing King George's (iirc) madness are also 100% completely made up and still get endlessly regurgitated as fact :/
And like ive said literally every woman on my mom's side of the family has had AIP attacks and no one has had permanent damage from it. Even my sister's kidney thing that was only partially related completely went away. I know anecdotal evidence aint it sometimes, but this is a disease where you look up the safety of a drug and see that 3 people with aip took it and didn't have problems and it's therefore considered a safe drug bc the disease is so fucking rare that a sample size of 3 is pretty good because there jusr aren't enough ppl with the disease to get a larger sample size (it's also hard bc you cant just have ppl who have aip and have taken a drug and been fine. bc drugs can be completely safe for ppl when asymptomatic and not trigger attacks, but become unsafe once smth else triggers an attack and make it worse)
so in conclusion im not going to stress myself out further dooming about how this muscle/nervous system stuff could last forever bc i just don't believe that's the case. Im normally pretty strongly trust doctors, but so many doctors have tried to give my sister and mom incorrect treatments for AIP, not believed when my sister would say she had it, refuse to even test for it. So this is the one area where i absolutely do believe i know more than doctors. And tbf some doctors would agree. My mom once saw a hematologist for smth unrelated but mentioned the porphyria and he immediately said that she would have to go somewhere else for anything related to that because she was the first person in his MANY DECADES long career with aip and that he didn't feel comfortable even attempting to treat it bc she probably knew more about than him, bc his only experience was reading abt it in a textbook once
And like even if it's true theres nothing i could do abt it. My mom would take me to the ER if i asked, but there's no point bc they wouldn't give me the glucose/heme. I mean one of my past attacks i went and said that i was almost certain i was having an acute intermittent porphyria attack, and the doctor was super shitty going like "oh, what makes you think you have that?" and I said family history and she didnt give a shit. Wouldnt order the super simple urine test every single hospital in the country is capable of performing in less than an hour. Just said i had a virus and discharged me saying i was fine. And like i said my mom and sister habe had doctors that believed them when they said they had it but still refused to give them the right meds. In fact my mom's been given meds that are in the UNSAFE category of rhe porphyria drug database, meaning they actively make porphyria attacks worse.
Doctors don't know shit about porphyria, im genuinely better off staying home to ride it out. I'll eat a shit load of foods w lots of carbs/sugar which isnt as good as iv glucose but since getting that prescribed is apparently impossible it's better than nothing, if the pain's really bad i still have oxycodone left over from oral surgery, if i get nausea i have zofran on hand im prescribed for my migraines. Which is most likely exactly what i'd get in the hospital. My mom had an attack only like a month ago and despite her and my brother and my brother's very assertive friend who was also worried and showed up all told the doctor that it was porphyria and she needed iv glucose, and what happened? Doctor said she had food poisoning and she got painkillers and zofran, nothing actually addressing porphyria. So hospital would be giving me stuff i could have just taken here whilr also exposing me to all the bad respiratory junk going around

Bonus characters for the BFB MDM AU (1/?)
if nickel exists in that battle for corrupted island & monday dusk monolith crossover au then ii characters gotta exist :troll:
The tragic losses of many victims on the former area he lived in was what made MDM!Nickel traumatized right to the point he fled and stayed in Goiky throughout the apocalypse.
MDM!Lightbulb
STATUS: INSANE
Despite being manic, she still retains her humor and some of her memories. She can hypnotize victims to brainwash them. She can cause an electrical discharge if distressed. She hunts together with her pet crab named Baxter.
MDM!Paintbrush
STATUS: INSANE
They're a revenant who is capable of pyromancy. Their right hand is strained, therefore they mostly use their left hand. When they become outraged, their brush strands will be entirely engulfed in flames as well as their eyes burn bright. Although, they don't get blinded by the fire at all.
MDM!Test Tube
STATUS: BRAINWASHED
She's a scientist that was formerly sane. Ever since Lightbulb brainwashed her, she became unhinged. If she puts on her goggles after spotting a victim, it's a sign that she's going to attempt to grasp and pierce you with her mechanical gloves that have hidden spikes.
MDM!Bot
STATUS: CORRUPTED
They're Test Tube & Fan's sentient robot child. They were sadly corrupt by a virus from the monolith, therefore they're now a brute who's trying to track down Nickel together with Test Tube, Fan, Goo, Clover, Blueberry and Balloon. They weaponize their trauma but also deeply care about their parents' safety. They have massive extra mechanical hands that represent butterfly antennae.

He's a revenant who was formerly sane. His wing tails can unfold and make himself glide. He can sometimes be seen walking on rough walls that are almost entirely vertical.
MDM!Baxter
STATUS: GONE
He's an entirely infected crab who hunts together with Lightbulb. His claw basically has a "second mouth".
MDM!Mephone4
STATUS: INSANE
He's corrupt by a virus from the monolith, but he actually managed to partially control himself normally. He's also capable of hovering. He'll cause a shockwave if he's too overwhelmed. He didn't kill Steve Cobs intentionally...
MDM!Suitcase
STATUS: SANE
She's a revenant that's full of paranoia who tends to be awoken by horiffic flashbacks, illusions and nightmares. After she helped out a certain group of survivors in Goiky once, she leaves as she doesn't want to be taken advantage by anyone. With all of this strife that's going on, how is she ever gonna help Baseball snap out of his torment?
MDM!Baseball
STATUS: GONE
A former survivor now enshrouded by blindness as the infection fully controls his body, right to point he forgot all of his memories. Once he hears your footsteps, HE'LL ATTEMPT TO BASH YOU AWAY AS HARD AS HE CAN.
MDM!Silver Spoon
STATUS: INSANE
He's a revenant who has his monolithan traits resembling a praying mantis, except for the fact that his scythe arms have flowers blooming on it. Don't get sent to a trance once he elegantly dances, because it's a sign of him luring you before going for a kill.
MDM!Candle
STATUS: INSANE
She's a revenant who is capable of magic. She'll attempt to lure you with her rattled tail, then she'll hem you in to give any of the infected, corrupted or brainwashed victims a chance to kill you.
MDM!Goo
STATUS: GONE
He's a feisty monolithan who is absolutely hungry as an alligator. He'll eat up a victim, either dead or alive. HE'S A PITBULL, BUT FAR WORSE.
MDM!Floor
STATUS: GONE
He's a monolithan who has the ability to take control of nature and change his size. He even has a tendency to overwhelm his victims by causing earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The same scene as "Lost". Originall the idea/scene was in Dean's POV. This is Dean's pov of the same scene.
15x20
Dean’s POV
I rushed through the halls, mind narrowed on finding Jody. She had called saying that Aeryn had stumbled into the hospital in a state worse than she’s ever seen. Sam’s voice was distant behind me as I turned the corner. Jody stood there talking with Alex.
“Jody, Alex,” I greeted as I stepped up to them.
“Oh, thank God,” Jody breathed as she came in for a hug.
I accepted the hug, feeling the tension in her slip a little. Something definitely wasn’t right if she went right for the hug. “What is it? How bad is she?”
“A patrol found her shuffling down the side of the road covered in blood and in real bad shape. Her hip was dislocated, a serious back injury that came really damn close to a permanent spinal injury. Alex…” Jody glanced to the other nurse at the station and gestured me away. “Alex said something Aeryn putting two fingers to her neck. Like a bite.”
My mind snapped to one thing. Vampire. It made sense as it was the case Aeryn had gone to work on solo. “Can I see her?”
Jody nodded and led the way to the room Aeryn was in.
She was curled up on the bed dressed in a hospital gown, covered by a blanket. An IV line linked her to a saline bag. The blood had been washed away but the wounds remained. Of all the times we’ve been beaten and wounded, I’ve never seen her like this. Sure we had bad cases that set us back. Not like this.
I stepped over to her, lightly touching her leg. Aeryn snapped into motion away from the touch, half curled in fear at the head of the bed. Time passed slowly until she seemed to realize I stood there.
“Dean?” Her voice was low, as if she still didn’t believe her eyes. She started to move to sit up.
“Yes, love.” I moved to her side as she moved slowly. Her face contorted in pain. I wanted to take it from her. I couldn’t. “Lay down, I’m here.”
I gave her a light hug before helping her to lay down and adjusted the blanket. My arm reached for the lone chair in the room and pulled it over to sit beside her.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t there,” I apologized. “I should have …”
“It was a simple case that turned sideways,” Aeryn said. “When do we ever get lucky on big cases?”
Her face contorted in pain followed by a whimper. My body moved from the chair as panic flooded my mind. “Aeryn, what is it? Aeryn?”
A light throat clearing cough came from partially behind me. A look showed the doctor standing there with a tablet in hand.
“Sorry to disturb you,” he started. “We got the blood test results back. Everything looks good. Though something came up. Is there any possibility that you are, or were, pregnant?”
My mind froze. Aeryn had gone on the case while pregnant. I did my best to figure out the time line and she must have gotten pregnant a month or so ago.
“I’ll prescribe some pain medicine and advise rest for the next several days,” the doctor said. “I’ll be back soon with the discharge papers.”
My hand reached for hers even as she buried her face in the pillow. Every little conversation and what if scenario in the weeks before the case made sense. She knew even if there hadn’t been any actual sign. Death had said she was able to sense every human. Even those in the womb.
“Hey. Hey. Hey.” I adjusted so I was able to give a gentle kiss on a cheek. “It’s alright. We’ll get you back to the Bunker and ...” I stopped when her head shook.
“I wanna go to Jody’s.”
“Jody’s?”
Footsteps came and the curtain moved before Jody peered in. “Everything okay?”
“Is it okay if we crash at your place for a while?” I asked.
“You don’t ... Sure. We’ll head there when Aeryn’s discharged.” She disappeared as Sam appeared with a duffel bag.
“Clothes for Aeryn,” he said, setting the bag on the bed. “Sorry, Aeryn. It's some of our things.”
“S’okay,” she said, voice low. “Thanks, Sam.”
He lingered for a few seconds before ducking out. The doctor came in with the discharge papers and gave instructions for general care and follow ups with her general practitioner. He left and I started pulling out the clothes, finding it was my sweats, a change of boxers, and an old tee shirt.
Aeryn had eased herself into a sitting position and I helped shed the gown; seeing the gauze over half of her back. My hands brushed against the skin around it, gaining a hiss from her. She moved to attempt to get the boxers on, stopping at her knees. It was a team effort with the sweat pants. My hands held onto her while she stood there for a moment until she was comfortable on her feet. Tee shirt on as carefully as possible, we left the room behind, empty duffel bag in hand. Aeryn stepped in close, her arm wrapped with mine. Maybe it was time to step back from hunting.

It’s been a good morning so far and I’ve only been up for like an hour and a half. I was able to shower and make coffee before being whisked away by my doctor. My coffee was a 10/10, glad I didn’t mess up the water and ground coffee ratio. I used my pumpkin creamer, it’s cloudy out, we’re 3/4 done with July. It’s basically (almost) Fall. Which puts me in a good mood.
I’m leaving around 1 for my pass and it’s actually 6 hours this time. I’ll probably stop at Mary Lou’s and get a caramel iced coffee and get some hash browns. I’m too anxious/really not hungry right now. I usually don’t eat til the afternoon anyways. I was going to stop at Dunks cause their new smores is obviously heart eyes, I keep talking about it, but then Mary will always have my heart first. Even though people say it’s “dessert coffee” and “iced coffee for teenagers”. Oh well lol.
My DMH meeting is at 12 and my Nana said she’ll be here at 1 so I’m hoping it’s not longer than an hour. I’m a little nervous about it but more so just looking forward to being with my cats later. And driving. I’m a little nervous about the driving but also so fucking excited… I haven’t driven since October, 9 months. This is THE longest I’ve ever gone. I don’t give myself a lot of credit for things, like I’m not one to brag about stuff, I don’t think this is bragging but like I know I’m an excellent driver. I pride myself in my driving. Especially in the city even though I usually hate it and right now will probably give me so much anxiety. But I’m really excited and looking forward to driving today. I think this may also boost my confidence and give me more things to look forward to when leaving. Having some more autonomy and knowing I have that exit strategy to leave my apartment if it’s getting too much.
I ended up not going to the 11am group which is the only group I’d be able to attend today but it was some peer recovery story and I’ve honestly heard them all. Skills groups I’m really supposed to attend so I’ll do that more tomorrow.
I met with my doctor already but my social worker was in a family meeting so I’m going to meet with her later but my window of later is like getting shorter by the minute. It’s already 11:15.
Thursday I’m doing a test run of one of the partial groups. So we’re now looking at discharge some time next week. The question is before or after my social workers last day on Wednesday.
My anxiety is now through the roof and I can't take a PRN cause of driving.

Best Laser Cutters & Engravers
Laser cutters, also sometimes called laser engravers, come in all shapes and sizes, allowing you to safely work with a variety of materials, from oak to iron-on transfers. You can get one of the best low power laser cutters for as little as. Low-wattage lasers are cheaper and perfect for engraving images and cutting thin materials. Higher wattage machines are more expensive and can cut through thicker material in one pass. To help you choose, we’ve tested several models and listed the best laser cutters. Where the laser cutting process needs to start anywhere other than the edge of the material, a piercing process is used, whereby a high power pulsed laser makes a hole in the material - laser cutter.
Lasers are tested using both the supplied samples as well as popular project blanks, such as basswood sheets and bamboo cutting boards. We completed several test projects to evaluate how the laser performs while engraving text and images, whether it can cut acrylic or etch something more difficult like stone or metal. Our deflection units are used in applications where a focused laser beam needs to be directed onto a workpiece. The possible applications of such laser processing can hardly be fully enumerated. In cooperation with our customers, our department is constantly developing products for new applications. Typical applications for our deflection units include, for example - Tube laser.
Laser cutting uses a high-power laser which is directed through optics and computer numerical control (CNC) to direct the beam or material. Typically, the process uses a motion control system to follow a CNC or G-code of the pattern that is to be cut onto the material. The focused laser beam burns, melts, vaporises or is blown away by a jet of gas to leave a high-quality surface finished edge. The laser beam is created by the stimulation of lasing materials through electrical discharges or lamps inside a closed container. The lasing material is amplified by being reflected internally via a partial mirror until its energy is enough for it to escape as a stream of coherent monochromatic light. This light is focused at the work area by mirrors or fibre optics that direct the beam through a lens which intensifies it. For more information, please visit our site https://impactmachinery.com.au/

Step-by-Step Guide to Proper Transformer Installation for Substation Success
Transformer installation is a critical phase in the lifecycle of any electrical substation. The quality of this installation not only dictates the immediate performance of the transformer but also has long-term implications for safety, reliability, and lifespan. Poorly executed transformer installations can lead to insulation failures, oil leaks, and catastrophic breakdowns that compromise the entire substation. At Manikaran Enterprises, we understand that precision and adherence to best practices are non-negotiable when it comes to transformer setup.

Ensuring Safety Through Precision Installation
Safety is paramount in any substation environment. Transformers handle high voltages and currents; any misalignment, loose connections, or improper grounding can create hazardous conditions. By following industry standards—such as correct torque settings for bolted connections, precise alignment of bushings, and proper cable terminations—technicians can mitigate risks of arcing, short circuits, and electrical fires. In addition, a well-installed transformer minimizes the risk of oil leaks, which not only damage assets but also pose environmental and fire hazards.
Impact on Transformer Longevity
A transformer that is installed correctly from the outset can offer decades of reliable service. Key longevity factors include ensuring level and vibration-free mounting, using the right insulation materials, and adequately protecting against moisture ingress. Vibration dampening mounts and proper thermal management help maintain internal components in optimal condition, reducing mechanical stress and preventing premature aging. As a result, the total cost of ownership decreases due to fewer maintenance interventions and extended replacement cycles.
Role of Professional Expertise
Engaging a specialist with proven expertise in transformer setup can make all the difference. Accurate Alignment and Anchoring: Ensuring the transformer is level and securely anchored prevents vibration-induced wear and potential seismic damage.
Quality Cable Terminations: Employing precise crimping tools and heat-shrink sleeves guarantees electrical continuity and insulation integrity.
Grounding and Earthing: A robust earthing system protects against fault currents and lightning strikes, safeguarding personnel and equipment.
Testing and Commissioning for Reliability
After physical installation, rigorous testing and commissioning confirm that the transformer operates within its design parameters. Insulation resistance tests, turns ratio checks, oil dielectric strength measurements, and partial discharge analysis are standard procedures. Any anomalies are addressed before energization, ensuring that the transformer integrates seamlessly into the substation network. Companies offering comprehensive Transformer Installation and Commissioning Services in India bring both the technical know-how and the calibrated instruments required for this crucial phase.
Maintenance Strategies Post-Installation
A high-quality installation lays the foundation for effective maintenance. Establishing a preventive maintenance schedule—comprising periodic oil sampling, thermal imaging surveys, and mechanical inspections—helps detect issues early. Routine checks on gasketing, breather performance, and cooling systems further contribute to uninterrupted service. Well-documented installation records also aid in troubleshooting, as technicians can reference exact configurations and component specifications.
Cost-Benefit Analysis of Quality Installation
Investing in top-tier installation practices may entail higher initial costs, but the long-term savings are substantial. Fewer unscheduled outages translate to reduced downtime and regulatory penalties. Lower frequency of repairs and replacements drives down lifecycle expenses, while enhanced safety protocols minimize liability and insurance premiums. In essence, high-quality installation is a strategic investment in operational excellence.
Conclusion
The quality of transformer installation has a profound impact on both the safety and longevity of substation assets. From meticulous site preparation to comprehensive commissioning tests, every step must be executed with precision. By aligning with industry leaders such as Manikaran Enterprises, utilities and project developers can ensure that their substations operate safely, efficiently, and reliably for years to come. Step-by-Step Guide to the Cable Fault Location Process
In the realm of electrical engineering, ensuring the reliability and safety of high voltage systems is pivotal. At PESVS, we specialize in high voltage commissioning and maintenance, offering comprehensive solutions tailored to your needs. Understanding the cable fault location process is crucial for maintaining the integrity of electrical installations, particularly in industrial settings like those in Perth, which often require industrial lightning protection.
When a fault occurs in a high voltage cable, it is essential to locate it quickly and efficiently. The following is a step-by-step guide to the cable fault location process, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal performance.
Step 1: Visual Inspection
The first step in the cable fault location process involves a thorough visual inspection of the cable and its connections. This includes checking for any signs of physical damage, corrosion, or wear. Look for visible issues such as frayed cables, insulation damage, or any unusual smells or heating which can indicate underlying problems. Identifying these indicators early can facilitate a more efficient fault location process.
Step 2: Test Equipment Setup
Once a visual inspection is complete, it's time to set up the appropriate testing equipment. Commonly used tools include time-domain reflectometers (TDR), cable fault locators, and insulation resistance testers. Ensure that the equipment is calibrated and functioning correctly. For high voltage systems, adherence to safety standards during this setup is paramount.
Step 3: Insulation Resistance Testing
Before actively searching for a fault, conduct an insulation resistance test to measure the integrity of the cable insulation. This test helps identify whether the fault is due to insulation breakdown. A low insulation resistance reading often signifies a need for further investigation. It's essential to perform this test under voltage and environmental conditions that mimic the cable's normal operating state for accurate results.
Step 4: Conductive Fault Location Techniques
There are various conductive fault location techniques to identify the precise location of a fault in the cable. Two widely used methods include:
1. Thumper Method: This involves applying a high-voltage surge to the cable, producing a disturbance that can help trace the fault location.
2. Pulse Reflection Method: Using a TDR, this method sends a pulse down the cable and measures the time it takes for reflections to return. By calculating the distance based on the time delay, technicians can identify the fault's location accurately.
Step 5: Acoustic Listening
In cases where the fault is not easily locatable through electrical testing, acoustic listening can be employed. This technique involves listening for the sounds produced by a fault, particularly in the case of partial discharge or arcing within the cable. Specialized equipment can amplify these sounds, enabling technicians to pinpoint the fault location based on audio signatures.
Step 6: Repair and Maintenance
After identifying the fault, it's crucial to proceed with repairs promptly. Ensure that the repair process adheres to high voltage maintenance standards to prevent future issues. It's also beneficial to implement preventive maintenance strategies, such as regular inspections and testing, to minimize the risk of cable faults in the future.
Step 7: Documentation and Reporting
Finally, document all findings, tests performed, and repairs made during the cable fault location process. This reporting is vital for future reference and helps in maintaining a comprehensive log for safety and compliance purposes.
In conclusion, understanding the cable fault location process is essential for any organization involved in high voltage commissioning and maintenance. At PESVS, we are committed to providing expert solutions for industrial lightning protection Perth and beyond, ensuring the reliability and safety of high voltage systems. With our step-by-step guide, locating and resolving cable faults can be a streamlined process, allowing your operations to continue without unnecessary interruptions.
