I don’t usually share photos of patients at the wildlife rehabilitation center, but these little ones were too cute not to!
Fun fact:
Chipmunks might not be what you think of when you hear the word ‘squirrel’, but they are, in the same family in fact- Sciuridae.

Bug World No Mercy: Naming Systems in the Bug Kingdoms
Before we proceed: I want to note that with all of the names listed, they can also be translated into other languages and it will still suffice as a name for the bug.
For example: If you translate “Leaf” into Spanish, “Hoja”, it will still be a valid name because of the word it was translated from. So without further ado:
Slugs of the Garth/Timberland
Before the Great Division Of Slug Country, the Slugs all had the same naming system.
Their names typically followed things associated with nature, wild-grown fruits, trees, leaves, plants, etc.
When the Slugs of the Garth formed their empire, they took on names associated with things you might find in a garden:
Fruits: Banana, Watermelon, Berry
Vegetables: Cucumber, Spud, Carrot
Nuts: Pistachio, Pecan
Legumes: Chickpea, String Bean
Flowers: Lily, Daffodil, Aster
When the Slugs of the Timberland stayed in the forest, they retained many of their old names, pre-division. These were names that associated with things found in the forest:
Bodies of water: Creek, Lake
Wild-grown fruits: Gumnut, Aronia
Trees: Pine, Birch
Plants: Fern, Ivy
Words relating to the forest: Woodland, Bosky
There are, however, “ grey area” names that arose after the division of Slug Country, as these names related to things that are present in both gardens and in nature:
Strawberry, Nectar, Apple, and Honey are some examples of these names
However, a slug can actually have a quote attached to them, created for themselves and by themselves.
Slugs of a high rank - Such as royalty, scholars, guards, advisors, etc.- are the only ones who can acquire a quote, according to Slug Law
These names can take a while to create, think of it like a thesis
High rank slugs must spend a year outlining, rough drafting, and finalizing their quote
This process also includes a month spent out in the forest to be alone with their thoughts
Trusted scholars are tasked with teaching upcoming high ranks multiple lessons of how to craft the perfect quote for themselves
The name itself must remind the others of that particular slug.
Example: “For what is the weakling slug, if they had moistened the soil into mulch, with the flesh of their enemies.” aka (Queen) Mulch.
These quote titles originated from the beginning of the Slug Country, thousands and thousands of years ago. The two warring sides of the previously known Slug Country have retained these types of names since then.
Cockroach Kingdom
Due to the Cockroach Kingdom's closeness to the humans and their society, they've taken on names that have to do with general products of human society, such as:
Human-made objects: Fork, Knife, Wire, Trash Can
Food/Drinks: Pizza, Soda, Hamburger
Buildings: Apartment, Prison, Greenhouse
The domestication of rats and pigeons by the Cockroach Kingdom is one that dates back thousands of years, theorized to be even before the Great Division of Slug Country. This led to titles pertaining to “Pest Tamers”, as the bugs call it, to be created:
Cockroaches that handle rats are given the title “Rat Tamer” before their name
On the other hand, cockroaches that handle pigeons are given the title “Pigeon Master” before their name
Hammerheads of the Gastropods (Hammerhead Worms)
Hammerhead Worm names generally follow a "4-part rule", going as such: Sir/Madame Gastro- (Given Birth Name) -Pod.
For shortening reasons, one may call a Hammerhead Slug: Sir/Madame (Given Name), Gastro-(Given Name), or (Given Name)-Pod.
Example: Madame Gastro-Grate-Pod,
Or: Madame Grate, Gastro-Grate, Grate-Pod
In Hammerhead Worm society, it is considered incredibly rude and disrespectful to only refer to one by only their Given Birth Name.
These Given Birth Names will typically be based off of:
The Hammerhead’s physical appearance: Mottle, Splotch, Stripe, Brindle
Physical actions: Scrape, Drag, Grate, Clutch, Trek, Smear
Believed to be the second oldest bug kingdom to perfect “Pest Taming”, Hammerhead Worms classify themselves into small categories, based upon the bird that acts as their steed:
Example: Robin Jockey, Finch Jockey
Moth Citadel
Moths are typically named after:
Organic materials that they eat: Cloth, Shirt, Hair, Blanket, Wool, Silk
Dark-themed words: Dim, Dull, Shade, Bleak
Moths also have a secondary part to their name.
Depending on what stage of the moon they were born under, that will serve as their last name.
For example: Blanket Waxing Crescent.
These last names fall under "Moon Families", although not every moth in the same Moon Family is related to each other.
Cicada Burrow
Since Cicada society puts lots of emphasis on a past life that a cicada has had, their names reflect such beliefs.
Cicada names include their current life's name alongside their previous life's name: (Current life’s name); Once-(Previous life’s name)
Cicada names are typically based around:
Types of trees: Redwood, Oak, Sycamore
Noises: Hum, Buzz, Bang
Words relating to plants/roots: Pith, Root, Stem
Nectar/Juices/Saps: Phloem, Mango Nectar, Apple Juice
An example of this would be: Sycamore; Once-Lily Nectar
Note: If a Cicada has just begun their cycle (Meaning that they are the beginning life of a rebirth cycle) then they will have just a singular name
Beetle Dynasty
Due to the dynasty's heavy emphasis on being defensively strong and armory, their names are ones that sound very heavy/strong/sturdy. This includes
Minerals/Gems: Titanium, Talc, Calcite
Trees/Words relating to trees: Lumber, Branch, Redwood
Words relating to rocks: Sedimentary, Boulder, Cobble
Metals: Cobalt, Copper, Steel
Example: Titanium, Sedimentary, Talc, Lumber
Beetles within the nation may also be granted a special title alongside their name. Usually connecting with a specific achievement
Special Title Example: Tungsten the Artificer, Strata the Batslayer
Worm Empire
Due to their entire empire (and association) being within the dirt, Worms take on names that have something to do with the earth
They can be based off of minerals in the dirt: Sulfur, Dolomite
The types of dirt: Peat, Clay
Shades of brown: Umber, Beige
Tools used to dig up the earth: Trowel, Shovel
Words connected to digging and moving around: Wriggle/Wriggling, Tunnel/Tunneling
The leader of the Worm Empire has the title of "Earth Master"
Worms who forage for food are given the title of "Processor"
Example: "Earth Master Excavator" “Processor Bronze”
Butterfly Pavilion
The butterflies take great pride in their appearance and beauty, so it's only fitting that their names reflect that. Many of their names are based on:
Colors: Blue, Amber, Aqua
Positive adjectives: Handsome, Bright, Clever
Flowers: Dahlia, Zinnia, Allium
Words/sounds associated with birds: Whir, Caw, Vane
Bird species: Robin, Hawk, Condor
When born, the caterpillars have their names prefaced with "Beautiful Sprout" and will keep this title until they form into a cocoon.
Upon emerging, the butterfly leaves behind their Beautiful Sprout title
Higher ranking butterflies can gain the title of Weathervane, alongside the number at which they rank at within the group of 10 Weathervanes
They can “rank up” whenever the Weathervane ahead of them retires, dies, or is overthrown
Example: 4th Weathervane Caw
Fly Cluster
Unlike the other bug kingdoms, flies don’t have an actual kingdom due to their nature to roam around and eat things that many bugs wouldn’t even eat as a last resort. However, despite this vagabond-esque culture and lack of a “proper kingdom”, the flies still have a system of names, typically based off of:
Death-related words: Corpse, Carrion, Muerte
Fungus and fungus genus names: Cordyceps, Lion’s Mane, Mucor
Bacteria and viruses: Shigella, Rabies
Words relating to decomposition: Decay, Rot, Spoil
Spider Province
Though spiders have a wide array of naming systems that pertain to their kingdom, often you’ll find specific patterns in their names. Some names have a bit to do with their proximity with humans. You’ll find spiders named after:
Carnivorous plants: Sundew, Butterwort
Words relating to crafting: Concoct, Forge
Words relating to thread spinning: Intertwine, Weave, Spindle
Quiet noises: Mumble, Whisper, Hum, Hush
Clothes: Shirt, Jacket, Sweatshirt, Shoe(s)
Animals: Wolf, Viper, Python (Thanks to @imagination-confusion for this!
Something to note is that all spiders, no matter their age, will have the title of “Mandrel” due to their natural web-spinning capabilities being compared to the likes of that specific weaving tool.
Example: Spindle the Mandrel
Pillbug Domain
This kingdom of small, armored bugs puts lots of emphasis onto their outer exterior. So it’s only natural that their names reflect such cultural importance in one’s outside shell. Pillbugs will typically be named after:
Outer casing and frameworks: Shell, Chassis, Pod, Hull
Words related to spinning/fast movement: Spin, Bowl, Twist, Sweep
Metals: Aluminum, Steel
Trees/Words relating to trees: Redwood, Oak, Palm, Timber
Nuts: Walnut, Cashew, Pistachio
The Pillbug Domain’s high ranking bugs will sport the title of “Lord Pill” or “Lady Pill”.
Example: Lord Pill Swing
Something that you might notice is that many of the names of the Pillbug Domain are similar to the Beetle Dynasty’s names. This is because at some point, the Pillbug Domain was a part of the Beetle Dynasty, however would later on separate from the kingdom due to the Pillbug Lord disagreeing with many of the other leaders.
Dragonfly Lair
Dragonflies have names that they take great pride in, much like butterflies or cockroaches. Unless you are a close familiar, they demand that you refer to them as their full name or don’t refer to them at all. They carry names based on:
Positive adjectives: Courage, Brave, Gentle, Wise, Wisdom, Lionheart
Quick words: Whip, Snap, Zoom, Swift, Curt
Birds: Robin, Hawk, Falcon
In some rare cases, however, a dragonfly may be named after an old ruler from Europe. This is rarely the case, however. But it’s unknown to the bugs - including the Dragonflies themselves- how exactly knowledge of these European rulers became known.
Dragonfly society consists of a sibling monarchy and 2-4 advisors
The monarch dragonflies are born with the title “Eye-snatcher”
The advisor dragonflies are given the title “Lecture-wing”
Example: Eye-snatcher Ambition, Lecture-wing Sparrow
The Mosquito Flock
A kingdom that has functionally become a society that advocates for the death of the individual through hunting the sweet nectar of human blood. The Mosquito Flock carries many names based on:
Blood diseases: Sickle Cell, Anemia
Blood-related words: Ichor, Hemoglobin, Hematic
Drinking-related words: Sip, Guzzle, Swig
Eating-related words: Feast, Consume, Ingest
Words relating to a mosquito being killed: Slap, Swipe, Thwack
Bodies of water or general water-related words: Lake, Ocean, Puddle
Mosquito society has in place a title that all mosquitos must call each other by: Brother, Sister, and Sibling.
This holds a symbolic meaning, as mosquitoes believe they are all united as a “family”, it does not mean that they are all related to each other.
Firefly Faction
Due to the relatively unknown society of the firefly faction, it proved to be difficult to record their types of names for a while. Until now. Typically, a Firefly will be named after:
Fire and heat related words: Flame, Burn
Light related words: Sunshine, Spark, Day
Shine related words: Glimmer, Flicker
Quick motions: Flutter, Blink, Wink
The Ant Colonies
Ant colonies typically do not name their ants, except for some exceptions.
There are head ants in the colony that serve as managers for the different ant ranks, Lieutenant (Head Soldier), Director (Head Worker), and Head Rationer, the latter of which is responsible for what food comes into the colony.
The Head Ant names consist of a First and Last name that:
sounds violent and/or is linked with organs and bones
Example: Lieutenant Snap Neck, Director Rip Molar, and Head Rationer Flesh Maim
In ant colonies, there are also secondary ranks to the main three:
Soldiers: Watcher, Scout
Workers: Constructor, Brood Guard
Rationers: Food Guard, Chef
To each of these ranks, there is typically a single leading ant (Although more than one isn’t uncommon in bigger colonies). These leading secondary ants share the same last name as the head ant of their main rank, and will have their name prefaced with “Lead”:
For example, a Leading Constructor ant who works under an ant named “Director Rip Molar” will be named: Lead Constructor Stab Molar
Meanwhile, the rest of the ants do not have any names given to them, they are typically referred to as their rank, whether they’re Soldiers, Workers, Rationers, or any of the secondary ranks.
Regular ants can however be referred to and refer to each other as their designated rank (Food Guard, Watcher, etc.)
Drones are typically only referred to as Drones, but ants from the same colony and queen as a drone ant will sometimes refer to him as “Drone Brother”
The Queen Ant will have a violent sounding name, although not one that is formatted like the Head or Leading Ant's
The Queen's name will be prefaced by "Mother" and the name itself may be based off of:
Weapons: Sword, Sling, Crossbow
Torture methods: Keelhauling, Giridrion
Causes of death: Drown, Burn, Blunt Force
Violent words: Maim, Snap, Rip, Gnash
Organs/Bones: Tibia, Tooth, Stomach
An example of this is: "Queen Mother Macerate II" or “Queen Mother Gnash”
The Bees of the Hive
Though hundreds of beehives reside close to each other, all of differing histories, they all generally share the same types of names. Much like the Ant Colonies, Bee Hives have three main ranks: Lieutenant (Head Soldier), Director (Head Worker), and Head Rationer. Alongside that, they have secondary ranks:
Soldiers: Watcher
Workers: Constructor, Brood Guard, Greenskeeper
Rationers: Food Guard, Chef
However, unlike the Ant Colonies, Head/Lead bees don’t have first and last names, only first names. Their names will be based around:
Flowers: Wisteria, Oleander
Jams/preserves: Strawberry Jam, Apricot Preserves
Herbs/Teas: Chamomile, Earl Grey, Mint
Fruits: Apricot, Avocado
Descriptions of their personality: Wonderful, Humble
Regular bees are not actually properly named, instead, they are categorized by their hive's abbreviated name, their rank, and a designated number.
So for example, a drone bee from the Southern Creek Bound hive would be named: SCB-Drone-1033.
The Queen of the hive is given a proper name once she rises to the rank and successfully destroys her competitors. Like the Head and Leading bees, Queens can be named after:
Flowers
Jams/preserves
Herbs/Teas
Fruits
Descriptions of their personality
The queen bee's name is formatted as, "Queen (Name) of the (Hive name abbreviation(if needed)) Dynasty".
A queen's name may be something like: Queen Mango Jam of the SC Dynasty
The Wasp Swarms
Wasps share some of the same name aspects as both the bees and ants. Wasps have three main ranks like the bees and the ants: Workers, Soldiers, and Rationers.
And like with the bee and ant kingdoms, there are lead wasps for each main rank: Lieutenant (Head Soldier), Director (Head Worker), and Head Rationer.
With those ranks comes secondary ranks:
Soldiers: Watcher
Workers: Constructor, Brood Guard, Greenskeeper
Rationers: Food Guard, Chef
Just like ants and bees, leading secondary ranking wasps will have the title of Lead prefacing their names. Like bee society, wasps don’t have both first and last names, only a first name. These names will be based off of:
Quick actions: Dart, Strike, Jab
Fruits: Pear, Plum
Weapons: Machete, Hammer
Example: Lead Brood Guard Jab, Lieutenant Razor
The rest of the wasps don't have proper names: They are named after the sectors that they are hatched in and what rank they fill
Alongside that, wasps will have the name of the queen they were born under as part of their identification
For example: Battle Queen (Name), Sector F Soldier
Regular wasps can, however, be referred to as/refer to others as “(Sector) (Rank) Sister” or simply just “Sister”. While drones will be referred to as “(Sector) (Rank) Drone” or simply just “Drone”
Example: Sector A Sister, Sector E Drone
Just like the Head and Lead wasps, the Queen Wasp(s) will have names based off of:
Quick actions
Fruits
Weapons
Their name will also be prefaced by "Battle"
Example: Battle Queen Prickly Pear III, Battle Queen Mangosteen

Not to get too deep into the weeds on the unseen events referenced in 1.1 "Eric Bittle", but I had always assumed that this flashback from 4.24 "Class Day" is showing us a glimpse of that first day that he met the team.
Tumblr media
It's a pecan pie. In the present he's talking about what it was like to come to Samwell at first and in the flashback it seems like this is one of the first times that he's going to the Haus - it's not a familiar place to him, he's uncertain about how he will be received. Ngozi loves a good bookend, so a flashback to the very first episode at this point is a slam dunk on pretty much every level...
Except that for that to be the case, some of the early comics have to have a less than obvious chronology. The episode where Bitty tells his followers that he's found regular access to a kitchen and we see Shitty give the tour of the Haus happens a significant amount of time after the events of 1.1 - in the first episode Bitty is going to the team's first skate more than a week before freshman orientation and by 1.2 classes have already started.
So, is there a way to make sense of the timeline so that the pie pictured in the 4.24 flashback is the one REDACTED? Maybe?
My vision for what happened is that the day of 1.1 had a number of team events; first skate with the team at Faber, where they took care of things directly related to the hockey part of being a team. Then the freshman were given a tour of the Haus which we see in 1.4 (making those scenes a flashback) and then some kind of party that evening at the Haus that we only see in the 4.24 flashback.
I'm taken with this idea (as you can see by this whole ass post I'm writing) for a couple of reasons. One, Bitty IS the pie - metaphorically, repeatedly, over and over in the comic. This flashback being to the time when he offered his first pie (his true authentic self) to the team and for them to absolutely love it in their own raucous unhinged way is very appropriate. Two, I like the first pie being offered at a social event at the Haus and not at Faber/First Skate because it makes sense to me that that is where the real emotional stakes lie for him - do these people accept Eric Bittle the person away from the structure and context of hockey? (That being said, showing up to Faber with a pie is exactly the sort of thing Bitty would do, and is a very good reason for the team to do something "felonious" like eat the pie with their hands.)
Further ruminations:
If Bitty had known about the Haus kitchen for weeks, why go multiple updates before mentioning it? The meta-narrative of Bitty's vlog introductions could be out of order, but I don't think it's unreasonable at all that he just decided to focus on other things before getting to the vlog where he talks about the Haus kitchen. Especially if he wanted to something like actually show the kitchen to his followers. The way the comic is structured is such that when events actually happen, when we the comic readers get to see them and if/when he tells his vlog viewers about them are all related but have the potential to be disjointed.
What about the clothes? I had written a whole thing about how it's in character for him to change from what he's wearing to the Haus tour to what we see in the 4.24 flashback, but he's wearing a striped shirt in the post pie-defilement bit of 1.1 so I got nothing.
What is the truth of the flashback pie? Did SMH hold Bitty down and draw stripes on his shirt? Maybe some things are meant to remain a mystery.

Bucky woke up restless, the way he sometimes does, but he sticks around long enough for Clint to be stirring so he can get an acknowledging murmur and a sleepy, musty kiss before he heads out.
It’s an inchoate thing, his need to move, not triggered by anything in particular and therefore not easily resolved. If he was expecting attack he could hunker down with Clint in the panic room in the basement; if he suspected an incursion he could circle the perimeter of Clint’s land and check all the myriad ways they’ve got to tell who’s been around. Instead he just drifts, through the orchard behind the house, around the edge of the barn, down to the pond that’s good for summer swimming. Every hour or so he makes sure to check in, viewing the house from a hundred different angles and making sure that he can get eyes on Clint, who’s wandering around the house and vegetable garden without a care in the world.
It’s nearly dark by the time he’s satisfied, the anxious energy in his belly making room for hunger and a gentle pull towards comfort and home. Bucky checks all the tripwires and cameras and sensors that fall along his path, but doesn’t particularly feel the need to go looking for more, so it’s only a ten minute hike back to the porch where he can kick off his battered boots.
Opening the door lets out a rush of warm air, and a smell that’s spiced and sweet, delicious in a way he doesn’t so much associate with the farm but that’s still perfectly settled here, indefinable and home. He follows his nose to the kitchen, and finds Clint bopping gently to something on the radio, scrubbing at a pie tin while the pie itself cools on the kitchen table.
Bucky pads silently to the counter, where a battered and yellowed book is propped open and leaning against a crossbow; there’s ancient and stiffened tape just about holding it together, so he flips it over care”fully to see a faded cover that sparks something distantly in the back of his head, like he’s seen it before but impossibly long ago.
“Oh, hey,” Clint says, and he’s turned around and is leaning back against the sink, no doubt adding a stripe of wet across his butt to go with the splashes all over his front. “Thought you’d be a little later - it’s not quite ready to eat yet.”
Bucky crosses the kitchen and wraps himself around Clint, tilting his head up enough to hook his chin over Clint’s shoulder, settled and warm and home in a way he’s found for the first time in about seventy years.
“I can wait,” he says.

It’s Winter Squash Time!
Tumblr media
Now is a great time of year to stock up on pumpkins and winter squash. They’re everywhere, they’re inexpensive, and did I mention that they’re absolutely beautiful? Who could ask for more?
There’s more!
Winter squash — Cinderella and pie pumpkins, kuri, delicata, butternut, buttercup, acorn, kabocha, turban — are all edible, and excellent keepers. You can store them at room temperature, and use them for pretty decorations all through the fall and winter season, choosing one or two to eat as the mood strikes.
This bounty of squash should carry myself and my husband through most of fall and winter, even eating it weekly.
Be absolutely thorough about checking your squash before you buy it for any bumps, bruises, scratches, nicks, or dings. Dirt is fine, it washes off, and sealed scratches are okay. Fresh scratches may or may not heal up and your squash may rot. If you're planning to cook it within a week, a scratch or two is probably okay, but not if you're planning to use them over the course of several months.
The easiest way to prep most winter squash (excepting the gigantic pumpkins) is to cut off the stem and the base if necessary so that the squash will sit flat, then split it in half from top to bottom. Scrape out the seeds with a large metal spoon or ice-cream scoop, and scrape out as much of the stringy goop as you can manage. Typically, at this point, I will oil the squash’s interior with olive oil (use whatever oil you like, roasted walnut or pecan oil is terrific) and sprinkle with seasonings (pie spices are great, but chipotle can be fun, as can sage or poultry seasonings), and roast at 350°F / 175°C until a paring knife will penetrate the skin and flesh easily. That’ll take about 45 minutes for most squashes.
You can roast the seeds of any winter squash as an additional snack, once you clean them up. More about that in another post.
Some notes:
Delicata: Capsule-shaped, yellow striped with green, sometimes blushed orange. It has a unique and delightful squash-sweet corn flavor. The skin is thin and can be left on. In my experience, delicata is the shortest-lasting of the bunch. Eat them first.
Kuri: Top-shaped and a gorgeous burnt-orange color. Kuri squash has a sweet, rich flavor. Again, one of the squashes that has good skin for eating.
Butternut: Columnar neck, with a bulb on the bottom, tan skin with orange flesh. One of the most accessible squashes — widely available and inexpensive, as well as delicious. Many of the so-called “pumpkin pie” canned fillings are actually made of butternut squash. It keeps very well and for a long time — four to five months — as long as you’re meticulous about choosing squash with undamaged skin. It’s also one of the easiest to peel. For dishes where you want peeled squash, choose butternut and use only the neck, and cook the bulb another time. Butternut skin tends to be tough, so you'll probably want to avoid eating it.
Buttercup: Deep green with a small, light green "cup" on the bottom. Delicious. Doesn't seem to hold as well as some of the others -- use it sooner rather than later. The skin on these is soft and fine for eating.
Acorn: Acorn-shaped, heavily ridged. Colors can range from green to orange. They do come in white, but white squash are usually pretty bland. Thin-skinned, so you can eat the whole thing comfortably. Great for soups and stews -- just clean it out and chop it into bits to throw into your soup. More of a savory squash than a sweet one. Conventional wisdom is that they're shorter keepers, but I've found that they keep very well for me, and have held them successfully for up to four months.
Kabocha: A deep-green flattened sphere. Sometimes they've got a smattering of orange. It's fine to leave the skin on these, and you've probably seen it left on in your tempura. Kabocha is more floury, less squishy when cooked, and reminds me a bit of sweet potato. Also one of the shorter keepers; try to get to it within a couple months of purchase.
Turban: Festively multi-colored in splattered white, orange, yellow, and green. Turban squash has a large "cap" on a smaller, three- or four-lobed base. It has notes of chestnut; it's not as sweet as some of the others but it's definitely distinctive. I'm also of the opinion that turban squash makes the best roasted squash seeds, even better than pumpkin. They are large and wonderfully crunchy when roasted. Turban skin tends to be tougher.
Cinderella pumpkin: Yes, those huge and heavy ribbed pumpkins are edible and quite tasty. They come in all kinds of colors. I find that the traditional peach-to-orange ones usually taste the best. Because they are so large and dense, you may want to roast them whole, then cut them open and scrape out the seeds and strings afterwards. They will take a while. They can also be quite watery, so after you roast them, you may want to drain the liquid out of them, if you're doing pies or custards or other things that want a drier texture. You can use the liquid in soups or in your oatmeal. Pumpkin skin is generally too tough to be pleasant to eat.
Pie pumpkin: Typically a lighter orange than your traditional jack o' lantern pumpkin. A pie pumpkin should be fairly small but not tiny, and heavy for its size. Any pumpkin that is light for its size is mostly cavity and not meat. Pie pumpkins are sweet for pumpkins, but I find they're generally not quite as sweet as butternut squash or kuri.
Speaking of sweet:
Not pictured here, because they are gigantic and typically sold in pieces, if you can find them at all these days, are banana squash. If you have the opportunity to purchase a piece of banana squash, treat it just like any other squash -- season it up and roast it. Banana squash is delicious.

sevgi/bees with coffee under acts of service? 👁👁
[link to the post this prompt came from] [and, side note: i use the headcanon that bees' real name is beatrice "bea" gorczyca. because otherwise, talking about bees and her bees gets confusing.]
Bea woke up to the sound of her front door slamming shut. At first, she was just annoyed to be awakened, but then it set in that she lives alone and never gave anyone else a key. As the panic was starting to step in, the intruder spoke.
"Bea, are you home?" Sevgi called.
"Yeah," Bea sighed in relief. "In my room."
Sevgi came in holding two coffees. "Did I wake you up?"
"Yeah... wait, shit, we had a coffee date!" Bea grabbed her phone from the nightstand and checked the time. It was almost noon, and almost two and a half hours after they were supposed to meet.
"I thought you may be asleep," Sevgi said, setting one of the coffees next to Bea. "You've been working too hard these past few weeks. You were going to crash eventually."
"I know, I know," Bea grumbled as Sevgi sat on the edge of her bed.
They looked nice, which made Bea feel worse. She recognized their red-and-black striped dress and denim jacket as things they had picked out while thrifting one day. The back of the jacket was already covered in sewed-on patches and safety pins lined the shoulders.
"I'm sorry I didn't make it, I guess I just slept through my alarm," Bea said. "Shit, now I'm late for--"
"You should rest today," Sevgi said. "Or at least take it slow."
"I already had plans, though," Bea said, sitting up and reaching for her coffee.
"You can cancel them," Sevgi shrugged.
"I guess I did kind of cancel ours, accidentally," Bea mumbled and took a sip of her coffee. "Hey, this is what I normally get!"
Sevgi raised an eyebrow. "Yeah?"
Bea laughed. "No, I just have such a complicated order, I didn't expect anyone to remember it."
Sevgi shrugged again. "I don't. That's why I wrote it down."
"Aww, you wrote it down?" Bea grinned.
"I write down all of your favorites. What, is that weird?" Sevgi's face went red.
"No, no, it's just really sweet!" Bea said, taking Sevgi's hand in her own. "But, out of curiosity, what all do you have written down?"
Sevgi kicked their shoes off and climbed into bed next to Bea. They opened their notes app and clicked on a note simply titled "Bea."
"Coffee order, favorite colors, favorite vendors at the farmer's market, drink order at Margaritoville, type of paint you normally get, favorite restaurant, website you buy beekeeping things from, that brand of pretzels you like--"
"What are these little comments?" Bea asked, pointing to parenthetical statements written out beside almost every bullet point.
"Me criticizing your taste in different things," Sevgi said, handing Bea the phone so she could read.
"Hey! Liking butter pecan ice cream does not make me an old lady!" Bea giggled.
"Yes, it does," Sevgi replied, leaning their head on her shoulder. "And if that doesn't, then the amount of cardigans and floral-print things in your wardrobe does."
"Both of those things are very fashionable, thank you very much!"
"I'm sure some of my mom's friends in her knitting circle would agree."
"Oh, hush!" Bea flicked Sevgi's forehead, making them laugh.
Sevgi took their phone back and slid it in their jacket pocket, then wrapped their arms around Bea. "Anyway, since we're staying in today, you ought to message the people at the theater and tell them you won't be coming in. At least, I assume you were doing something at the theater."
"So you've decided for me, then?" Bea smiled.
"Yes. You're tired! Plus you're already late, and it would take another hour to tame the nest on your head, anyway," Sevgi ruffled Bea's hair.
"Alright, alright, let me message a couple of people, then we can do whatever," Bea picked up her phone from the nightstand, trying to ignore all of the various notifications and just text the director.
"We should go back to sleep," Sevgi said, nuzzling into Bea's neck. "Or watch that show on your computer."
"What show? We've started several."
"That one with the family that hates each other, or whatever--"
"Succession?"
"No, they're superheroes, or something. Well, the show is partially about debating whether or not they're actually heroes, I think, but they have powers."
"Oh, Umbrella Academy."
"Yeah, that."
"Alright, just let me send this text," Bea said, pressing a kiss to the top of Sevgi's head.
Usually, Bea disliked not being busy. But not being busy with someone else was a rewarding activity.

Best Autumnal Recipes:
No Bake Spiderweb Cheesecake: Absolutely gorgeous and showstopping delicious with relatively low effort, this one has rather quickly entered my teatime repertoire any year I can find the time to make it! (For the wafers themselves, I'd recommend these, and the spiders can be made relatively easily by melting Rolos on top of a pretzel for about ten seconds, flattening them with the back of a spoon, and adding mini M&M "eyes" and legs from broken pretzels.)
Witch Hat Cookies: As far as cute, easy fixes go, I have a particular love for fudge stripe cookies (or the store brand equivalent) with the chocolate side facing up, topped with a thin ring of purple icing around the center and an unwrapped Hershey's kiss (with another band of purple icing to form the hatband). I'd call them zuckerhutchien but my first-generation German mother would burn me as a witch on the spot, so instead I just refer to them as spooky book club treats.
Gingersnaps: Also an absolute classic; this recipe in particular has been the cause of much appreciation from various friends and professors
Chai Spiced Maple Cookies With Browned Butter Frosting: Definitely a mouthful there, but these remain a favorite for Hobbit Day and the rest of the pumpkin spice season!
Mini Pumpkin Cake: Ach! This is one of the top recipes on my to-do list. It looks absolutely delicious and the absolute perfect size for a small pumpkin spice treat...on that note, please let me know if you've found a vegetarian equivalent to candy corn pumpkins!
Hahaha YES: Candy Corn Pumpkins
Soft Molasses Cookies With Pumpkin Cream Filling: This is more of a transitional treat, but still a nice one irregardless. Personally, I'd recommend baking the cookies a little longer, so you get just enough of a crisp finish on the edge to compliment the cream cheese filling.
Brown Butter Maple Pecan Cookies: I haven't tried these yet either, but some baking communities have been going wild about them, and you really can never go wrong with either browned butter or a nice turtle flavor palette.
Baked Pumpkin Donuts: Skeptical, you may be! "Who bakes a donut?" you'll say! The answer: me. I used to work in a bakery that specialized in donuts and had a pretty good selection of baked (as well as fried) donuts, and the pumpkin is perfect for providing that soft cake-y moisture content. (The batter uses the same recipe as a similar pumpkin cream cheese muffin, and while I can't speak for the author's, pumpkin muffins are quickly getting me through the busiest season in coffeeshops, bakeries, and academics alike.)
Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bread: What's better than banana bread? Pumpkin bread, of course!! This recipe, with the exception of maybe the chocolate chips (depending on brand, although chopped vegan chocolate bars usually work well) is entirely vegan, not to mention a pretty quick stress-bake to boot.
Pumpkin Scones (Starbucks Copycat): Once again, I'll be honest: I have not tried these, albeit these vanilla bean scones have been a popular favorite and we, as a barista at a local coffeeshop, have a legal obligation to one-up Starbucks at any given point. Definitely a must for the next cup of tea!
Caramel Apple Cheesecake Bars: Between Rosh Hashannah and Halloween, we've got to have one obligatory Halloween dessert with some type of caramel apple base!
Happy baking!

tu bshvat 5784
Welcome to the new tradition around here, sharing my family's tu bshvat table! Pictures imperfect because we needed to sit and eat!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Image description. Three photos of a table set with a meal, described below. One from overhead, the other two from just over tableheight at two different angles.
The whole table! This is a secondhand dropleaf table that I fixed up a bit with oilcloth, but I'd love to have one of those old country kitchen wooden tables that serve as prep table, dining table, and ad hoc operating table for La Résistance. The kids keep grabbing onto the edge and trying to swing off this, and you can imagine that will one day soon end very poorly.
Since I live an actually not aesthetically cottagecore life, we have nothing but the finest dollar store plain white dishware for us adults, and metal sets for the kids. I haven't finished making all the colour coded napkins, but eagle eyed individuals will notice each blue gingham napkin has a flower embroidered in the corner in each of our colour coding scheme, from top left clockwise that's red, yellow, green, orange. Each setting has a bowl on a plate, a fork and spoon on a blue napkin, and a haggadah with a pomegranate branch on blue circle. Adult settings also have a butter knife and a stemmed port glass, and the kid settings have two small square sticker sheets and a turkish teaglass.
The table has, from top left clockwise, an adult place setting, a fruit plate on glass, a child setting, a red plate with four servings of melanzane alla parmigiana, an adult place setting, a paper packet of parsley seeds, a small glass jar with cardamom pods, a glass bowl of wash water with three star anise floating in it, a gray towel with white stripes, and a child setting. Down the center of the table from left to right is a bowl of fruit and nut studded barley, a bottle of white and a bottle of red wine, a square container with mixed roasted vegetables, a half gallon mason jar with water, a pecan pie with circular pattern, and a plate of homemade thick matzah. Yes, I made matzah because I thought it would be easier than making bread. Yes, my oven hasn't been cleaned in a while and so started smoking. Yes, the smoke alarms went off multiple times. Yes, I did have to stand there facing the street while it rained pumping the side door while all the windows were open to get all the steam and smoke particles out of the air. Holiday adventures with Sahar!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Image description. Four close up shots of foods, described below. All are birds eye except the barley, which is at an angle to show the careful mounding.
the fruit plate! Our minhag is at least twelve tree fruits so we piled most of them on the tasting plate. From the ramekin going clockwise, that's a ramekin of pomegranate arils, a chunk of pomegranate, segmented tangerine slices, dried apricots, almonds, dried figs, golden raisins (the baby calls them 'ravens'), extra-dark chocolate chunks (cacao is a tree fruit, it's what the ancestors would want), a ramekin of pitted kalamata olives, and some dried medjool dates. Bonus: the kids ate the plate remnants as a serve-yourself breakfast the next morning. Always wonderful when a holiday yields some batch cooking and child autonomy.
a pecan pie. We use the King Arthur Flour Old-Fashioned Pecan Pie recipe because corn syrup tastes off to me. The changes we made this time are making a savory not sweet pie crust (my spouse makes it with iced water and vodka), cream instead of milk, toasting the filling nuts just shy of burnt, and cream instead of milk. It worked really well to reduce the sweetness from 'sickening' to 'very.' It's our traditional dessert and we eat it only once a year because it's so sweet. I like laying the pecans flat side up in rings on the top for full coverage and so it looks a little like tree rings.
The washwater bowl. It's just a glass mixing bowl with water, but I dropped in some orange blossom water and floated some star anise to make it pretty, and I liked it. Will have to repeat the anise for pesach, but skip the orange blossom water - the anise completely overpowered it.
The barley. We cooked it plain and then added walnuts, pine nuts, dried cherries, fresh pomegranate, and a lot of olive oil. We didn't salt it, which was fine, because we let the kids salt the eggplant before we roasted it, which was not fine. Together they taste great. For those keeping count, the barley dish rounds out the tree fruits to thirteen, and with the whole-wheat matzah that makes all seven species! Side note on the matzah, keep your eyes peeled around pesach for my recipe. Once I learned how to make it, I'm never going back to store matzah. Mine is delicious and oil rich, and we eat it as a pleasant flatbread, not just the bread of affliction.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Image description. Two photos of amanita mushrooms from overhead angles.
As a final bit, please enjoy these amanita mushrooms from the JCC. The groundskeeper is in a months-long battle with this patch that just keeps coming back. He keeps knocking over all but one so the preschoolers can safely enjoy looking only, and they keep popping up. I'm delighted - I thought these were mythical and didn't realize they grew where I live now!
If you'd like to support my work, you can buy a copy of my tu bshvat haggadah here, and the two tu bshvat stickers here and here.

Keep Warm: A Good Omens Holiday Fluff Fic
Rated G. Prompt: "Too quick, mumbled into your scarf" from The way you said "I love you."
“Crowley! Your fingers are so cold!” Aziraphale held a paper cup of hot chocolate in one hand. A stick of striped peppermint candy served as an improvised stirrer. Tiny white marshmallows were already starting to melt on the surface of the sweet drink. The other hand had just reached out to hold Crowley’s.
The demon was just finished with his cone of candied pecans. They had found a booth selling ones with cayenne pepper in the spiced coating, and Aziraphale had finally been able to convince Crowley to actually try some.
“Here.” Aziraphale let go of Crowley’s hand and began to unwind the tartan scarf he had tucked under the lapels of his jacket. It somehow got twisted, and the angel ended up with coils of woven wool looped around his head.
“Angel. What on Earth are you trying to do?” Crowley couldn’t help but smile at the frustrated string of unintelligible syllables that emanated from the tangled mess.
“I’m sorry, what was that?” Crowley carefully unwound the fabric from Aziraphale’s face and settled the scarf back into its original place. The angel’s curls stood out around his face, catching the changing colors of a blinking sting of lights behind him.
“I said,” Aziraphale huffed and smoothed his hair with the hand not holding the hot chocolate. It immediately bounced back up. “That I was just trying to help you keep warm.”
“Ah.” Crowley snapped his fingers. A sleek, black strip of fabric now hung around his neck. He flicked one end of it over his shoulder. “Satisfied?”
“Crowley!” Aziraphale’s admonishment indicated that he was not, in fact, satisfied. “What if someone sees?” He gestured to the street, busy with humans enjoying the holiday fair.
“Relax, no one saw anything.” The demon stepped in close, and lowered his glasses. “Besides, I can think of better ways you could keep me warm.” A mischievous wink flashed at Aziraphale. He raised his hand above them. It was somehow now holding a single sprig of mistletoe. There was even a jolly ribbon tied around the base.*
“Crowley!” Aziraphale’s tone was softer. A blush crept up over the top of his scarf to paint his cheeks a charming shade of pink. He smiled into eyes shining his favorite shade of yellow. “What if someone sees?”
“Let them look, then.” Crowley dipped his head down and claimed a kiss from the sweet lips of his sweetest angel.
---
*The color of which was an appropriately cheerful red. Crowley had briefly considered a green plaid, but had dismissed it on principle.

top 5 pastries
Maple Pecan Plait. I used to hop off these things. I’ve slowed down a bit now, but I still can’t really resist them.
Anything apple. Apple Danish. Apple Lattice. Put stewed apples in some stripe of pastry and I’m there.
Baklava. Honey, nuts and layers of pastry. Possibly the stickiest thing in the world, but so worth it. (Sidenote: I do not approve of chocolate on baklava. There was this selection box I got one of baklava-inspired variations, and some were chocolate, and it’s not good)
If you want chocolate, a good old fashioned chocolate donut. Not a ring donut with chocolate icing, but a solid donut with chocolate filling. Not too heavy, I struggle with double/triple chocolate things, but a nice donut with chocolate filling works just fine.
And fifth, my dad just pointed this out, but if you want a savoury pastry, you can’t go wrong with sausage rolls.
