When history fails to shed light on the truth, myth creates its own.
Eadaz "Ead" du Zala uq-Nāra, Sabran Berethnet and Miduchi Tané from The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon.
i had the wonderful opportunity to visit @sshannonauthor at kinokuniya sydney on the 19th, and it was such a lovely and inspiring time to hear exactly how the world of priory was created and why things existed in it!
to anyone looking for a queer feminist retelling (of st. george and the dragon) with IMMENSELY engaging worldbuilding and characters, i do highly recommend priory!

Reading A Day of Fallen Night again, and I just noticed this in the Unora prologue. Crying!!! Only Nikeya’s mother, the poet Nadama pa Tirfosi, was nice to Dumai’s mom when she was at court. And she was pregnant with Nikeya at the time. I love discovering small details like this when re-reading a book.

Almost done reading Priory. I really love the balance of softness and severity that Shannon imbued into Sabran’s character.

I was gonna catch up on my screen backlog and then that new chair came out and yeah. Look at this nerd.

He's in his element. His natural habitat. Vividly hallucinating staring at the guts of his dead ancestors. Bonus screen because I'm pretty sure this is my favorite one from the bunch but couldn't fit it into the rest of the sequence without feeling too samey.

It was the fifth year of winter when the crows that usually roosted in the priory's belfry began their decent south in search for warmer weather.

I’m re-reading Priory, and I just finished the chapter where Loth and the Unceasing Emperor of the Twelve Lakes (Dranghien Lakseng) are sailing across the sea on their way to the Abyss.
The Emperor tells Loth the story about how he fell in love with a woman he met in the palace when he was twenty, and how the Imperial Dragon would not approve of their marriage. The dragon said there was a shadow in his lover that no one could control, and that power would unleash it.
Ultimately he realizes that if he were to marry the woman he loved, the court would most likely do whatever it would take to get rid of her to keep the alliance between human and dragon strong. So in an effort to protect her, he told her that he had never loved her and that she would never be his empress.
Now, am I wrong in thinking that the woman the Emperor is talking about, is the Golden Empress, leader of the Fleet of the TigerEye? Or was this obvious to everyone else?
Here’s why I think this. When the Emperor first starts telling the story, he refers to the woman as the ‘Sea Maiden’. Self-explanatory.
Then there’s also the fact that the Imperial Dragon sensed a shadow in her that power would unleash.
Lastly, when the Emperor broke her heart, she told him she would build her own empire in defiance of him and that one day she would drive her blade into his heart, as he had done to her.
All of those things makes me believe that the woman the Emperor is talking about is the Golden Empress, the leader of pirates who abduct dragons and sell their parts.
And why would the Golden Empress hate dragons so much (as she states to Niclays)? Because in her eyes, dragons are responsible for taking away the person (and life?) she loved and wanted.

if I had a nickel for every piece of media where a high society closeted gay man begins a loving affair with a man below his station while his wife accepts and supports and loves them both. I'd have two nickels. which isn't a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice.
