May 26 and 27, Ontario Health Coalition (OHC) will be holding a citizens’ referendum with more than a thousand voting stations across Ontario. Online voting with be available starting May 2 – and I encourage everyone reading this to vote online as soon as the site is activated.

The referendum is in response to the Ford government’s announcement that it’s moving ahead with Bill 60, Your Health Care Act,  which is expected to pass this week.

The legislation significantly expands privatization of surgeries and diagnostics as well as private for-profit hospitals and clinics – something the Ford government said they would never do during the lead-up to the election.

Once this legislation is passed the government will move with lightening speed to dismantle universal health care.

Americans, if healthcare is tied to your job in most cases then what happens after retirement? How do the retired have health insurance given they are likely super expensive to insure?

So long as you privatise part of the NHS, more of it will become private

When the middle and upper classes know they can go private to get seen sooner and frequently better, they will take advantage of this

Encouraging more to become private because money can be made off it

My family considered going privately for my ADHD diagnosis but I decided it was too expensive when I could get it free but a lot of people we know went private and it was significantly quicker to go private

Someone my family knows who works with students who have dyslexia openly admits it's better for them to work private because they have better work hours and pay and it is better for the people they help to go private because they will get help sooner

People with minor physical issues will go private if they have the money because the issue they have maybe minor but it is also still an issue, and they might not get seen for months unless they go private

The NHS is overworked and understaffed so it is better for the patient to go private but this screws over other patients

It encourages more privatisation for the businesses and the workers to move to the private sector because there is money to be made and benefits to be gained

Meaning the services that are free slowly get worse as more people move away from the NHS

And it's a problem when the politicians making things private are exactly the people for whom medical fees don't mean anything because it's barely a drop in the ocean of their personal wealth

Caste disadvantages people in many ways. It doesn’t just manifest as teachers discouraging students from pursuing studies, but also as healthcare workers ignoring dalit communities for immunisation, health education, social security schemes, preventive programs etc. This means that dalit communities have poorer access to healthcare. Casteism affects the wage gap as well, further restricting healthcare in an urban-centric, corporatised and elitist, private healthcare system.

A cardiology clinic in Saskatchewan, the birthplace of medicare, has opted out of the publicly funded heath-care system after it struggled to meet its costs under the province's fee structure. Dr. Jeffrey Wilkinson, who runs the South Saskatchewan Heart Clinic in Moose Jaw, said Friday in a statement that he believes it is the first clinic in the province to go private since universal health care was introduced in 1962. "Over the last five years, being a specialist clinic in Moose Jaw has been operationally and financially difficult," he wrote in the statement. "In early January 2023, these mounting difficulties became a crisis."

You know what I do get a lot of the criticism behind canadas healthcare system, and I agree with most of that criticism.

however, I was admitted to the hospital for a few days this last weekend. I stayed for four days and had countless blood tests, an endoscopy ultrasound, and Pain medication, i talked with several doctors and surgeons as well as had some very nice nurses looking out for me. and it only cost me $30 for the uber ride to get there.

we need to pay nurses better, increase the number of people accepted to med school, and make hospitals a better place to work. and decrease wait times in ERs. but the answer isn't to privatize parts of our healthcare system.

I am in my early 20s, I don't have any insurance, and I work for just 70 cents above minimum wage. I was able to go knowing that I could afford to go. I feel terrible for people who live in places where they have to decide whether they can afford help or not.

all of this is to say that the criticisms of the healthcare system are valid. Yet there is still value to the system and the system deserves to be repaired rather than replaced.
