Demeter: Bond Between Mother and Child
The asteroid Demeter (1108) has a focus on the protectiveness and intense emotions and instincts associated with motherhood. May have slight a focus on mother-daughter relationships, but this can still be looked at through the lens of any parent-child relationship. It can embody what you are willing to do for your child.
Demeter in Aries: A fiercely protective and assertive mother figure, embodying a warrior-like instinct when it comes to safeguarding and providing for children. Has a proactive nurturing, where the mothering/parenting role is driven by action, independence, and a readiness to fight for loved ones. Shows love through bold, hands-on care, prioritizing children's needs with strong leadership. Can be impatient and impulsive with children, their anger being the main tool they use to protect and guide which has its power and problems.
Demeter in Taurus: Likely patient, consistent, and stable in their nurturing instincts. Their mothering/parenting instinct can also be very strong and come naturally. This placement emphasizes the importance of providing material security, comfort, and a nurturing home environment. They can be possessive and determined in how they protect and sacrifice for their children. Demeter is associated with Earth and it is debated whether she is connected to Taurus or Virgo. Causing a famine and disaster to get her child back.
Demeter in Gemini: Is engaging, communicative, and playful in their bond with their child. They foster mental growth, encouraging learning, conversation, and versatility in their children. May allow their children plenty of freedom and may not seem traditionally protective. However they will use their intellect, flexibility, and swiftness to protect their children. May struggle with inconsistency or spreading themselves too thin in efforts to provide. Always open to a good or new idea from those they trust or their own children.
Demeter in Cancer: Has deep, powerful mothering/parenting instincts. They focus on creating a safe, loving, and comforting home. Demeter in Cancer is highly sensitive to the emotional needs of their children, offering unconditional care, empathy, and close emotional bonding. They can be overprotective with a passion and intensity that rivals Demeter herself. Can be clingy and won't hesitate to use manipulation if they think it is for the best.
Demeter in Leo: Expresses a nurturing style that is proud, generous, and infused with warmth and creativity. Instinct is focused on instilling confidence, individuality, and a sense of personal pride in their children. Provides through attention, affection, and encouraging self-expression, often taking on a leadership role in their family and shining as a central figure in their lives. I have read this placement as "taking their parenting duties or protection too far", but can you really take things "too far" or "too extreme" for your children? Maybe their overbearing side can manifest negatively. May seek validation from their family or outsiders for being a parent.
Demeter in Virgo: Focuses greatly on nurturing the health and minds of their children. Will go to great lengths to provide. Shows mothering/parenting instincts through acts of service, offering practical solutions and care, and by being thoughtful. Strives for the best for their family. Can be critical and negative at times to their kids. In the myth with Persephone it describes Demeter's great worry and frantic destruction searching for her daughter, on par with Virgo's famous engulfing worry. Even a Virgo mother will sacrifice their devotion and duties for their children.
Demeter in Libra: Teaches their children cooperation and fairness. Nurtures by encouraging diplomacy, emotional balance, and strong social connections, often prioritizing children's social wellbeing and sense of justice. Provides through emotional support and creating a sense of unity, though they may sometimes struggle with indecision or placing too much emphasis on maintaining harmony at the expense of addressing deeper emotional needs.
Demeter in Scorpio: Will be intensely protective but also loving. Has a mothering/parenting instinct marked by loyalty and a powerful drive to shield loved ones from harm, both emotionally and physically. Demeter in Scorpio provides through profound emotional connection, often diving deep into their children's inner worlds to understand and guide them through life's challenges. Nurtures with unwavering devotion, but may struggle with possessiveness or control, as their protective instincts can sometimes verge on being overwhelming or secretive in their efforts to safeguard family.
Demeter in Sagittarius: This mother or parent nurtures their children's independence, curiosity, and maybe passion. They may be most protective over the information and beliefs their children are exposed to. Their instincts may feel ancient, natural, and impulsive. When it comes to protecting their family they take the approach of empowering their children. Teaching them to be strong and encourages developing resilience via experience. They can at times have a temper, be highly hands-off, or lack emotional closeness or reassurance.
Demeter in Capricorn: Is focused on security, providing, and boundaries. This placement emphasizes care through structure, practical support, and ensuring their family has the resources and stability they need to survive and succeed. Their nurturing comes through actions rather than words, offering a reliable, steady presence, though they may sometimes struggle with being emotionally cold or overly stern.
Demeter in Aquarius: Will make an effort to appreciate, recognize, and/or truly get to know their child on an individual level. May have some sort of unconventional bond with their children. Maybe they act more as a friend or advisor or maybe they give them advice that isn't common or raise them in a way not inline with their society. Demeter in Aquarius protects by teaching loved ones to be self-focused and adaptable in the face of societal changes. They often support their children in pursuing their ideals, causes, passions, or callings. They can be emotionally detached, unaffectionate, or hard to understand.
Demeter in Pisces: Highlights a mothering/parenting instinct rooted in emotional connection, spiritual care, and a strong sense of empathy for their family's feelings and needs. Demeter in Pisces protects by creating a safe, loving, and emotionally supportive environment, often acting as a healer or emotional anchor for loved ones. May sometimes struggle with boundaries or become overwhelmed by family's emotional needs, as their instinct to care can lead to self-sacrifice or overextension.

Explaining Dignities: Exaltation
The reason why I want to talk about them is because I've actually seen dignities play a big role in readings, as they do describe how well or adverse certain matters can play out for the querent...so here's a little analogy to understand them better!
Context: In Hellenistic (traditional) astrology, exalted planets are said to be like the favorite guests of a given sign (host), so the resources they have at their disposal are equal or even greater than the host's. In other words, imagine a queen or king being invited to a neighboring kingdom, they will be treated with the greatest of honors and commodities! In a practical aspect, this means that the qualities of that planet (the guest) will be able to shine at their maximum, making that particular area of life (house) easier or more fortunate for the owner of the birth chart.
*Mind that below I’m speaking metaphorically of “house” as the SIGN the planet is exalted, and not the astrological house as such (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.). *
Sun in Aries: Sun is a friend of Mars, as both rule fire signs and are leaders by nature. Mars is delighted to receive his royal friend, as he’s anxious to show him how noble, honorable, brave, and pioneer he is, and just how much he has achieved on his own. His job is to win wars for the kingdom after all! He’s thrilled to share his best tactics and borrow his friend his most treasured weaponry. The Sun feels comfortable because he has all he needs to command freely in this household, as his creativity, charisma, leadership and authenticity are praised by his friend. Together, they come up with solutions and strategies to conquer whatever they want! They are not afraid of competition or enemies, as both are equally ambitious and powerful in their own ways. Mars trusts the Sun, as he believes nobody is as visionary and talented enough to lead as he does. The Sun, in return, feels even more driven and powerful to accomplish his goals, as he has access to an incredible arsenal and his mission is thoroughly supported by his friend’s energy and fiery ability to execute his plans.
Personality keywords: high self-esteem, passionate, entrepreneurial, courageous, independent, self-reliant, proactive, resourceful, inspiring, competent, combative, non-stoppable.
Moon in Taurus: The Moon feels really welcomed in one of Venus’ places, as both value beauty, security, domestic life and emotional closeness. They speak the same language, as both love to connect and celebrate relationships. They allure through tact and sweetness instead of brute force as their counterparts (the Sun and Mars) do. The Moon loves Taurus’ palace since she’s fascinated by beautiful art, exquisite food, overgrowing nature, dreamy romance, and abundant wealth… she’s just so inspired and fulfilled with this kind of luxury and magnificence! In here she has firm and solid grounds to step on, so her moods and emotional needs are stable as well. The Moon is able to relax and enjoy life effortlessly as she becomes more in tune with her physical senses and the things that bring her genuine pleasure. With Taurus’ gentle and grounded approach, the Moon lets her love flow naturally in all directions without the fear of being judged, ridiculed, or getting hurt. Like her friend, she is moved to become the glue between the people she’s fond of and attracts what she desires through her feminine and gentle nature. The Moon is so pampered and taken good care of that she’s able to channel her emotional depth and excellent organizational skills towards the growth and embellishment of her relationships and surroundings in a lasting way.
Personality keywords: soothing, calming, relaxed, adorable, loyal, possessive, down-to-earth, practical, trustworthy, maternal, cozy, warm, gentle, nourishing, wealthy.
Mercury in Virgo: Mercury is always eager to pay a visit to Virgo´s realm, as he feels productive and useful here. As the guest, Mercury has all the mental and practical resources to give his thoughts structure and build all the great things he imagines into reality. Virgo gladly grants her friend access inside her huge library so he can explore his wide range of interests and gives him the key into her laboratory and workshop, places where he can experiment and practice all his learnings and become an expert on what he chooses to. She knows how anxious and critical he can get when he doesn’t rest or when things don’t go his way, so she also allows him to use her gym and provides him the best doctors and nutritionists to ease his stress. Virgo is pleased to see that Mercury quickly understands the importance of wellness and health, as she knows he cannot get his job done without proper self-care. Once relaxed and restored, he feels inspired to be of service, as he believes his quick wit and knowledge are put to good use. Mercury, thus, is motivated to grow, upgrade himself, achieve mastery and share his gifts with the world to make it a better place thanks to the wisdom, tools and care her friend borrows.
Personality traits: methodical, skilled, expert, wise, smart, discerning, perfectionist, high-standards, inventive, detail-oriented, practical, productive, industrious, quick wit, self-made.
Mars in Capricorn: In this sober and ancient residence, Mars is forced to cool down a bit and think before he acts. He understands that there is no one to conquer or outdo but himself. As guest in other households, Mars, as explosive, impatient and ambitious as he is, sometimes can get lost in the way, initiating projects and strategies that he later on drops because he gets bored quickly or doesn’t get the immediate results he wants; he also throws tantrums and whims when this happens, and his anger makes him do reckless and foolish things at times, something other hosts find puzzling or repulsive, where they either encage him or make him submissive, something that irritates and demotivates him even more. Capricorn, his patient and wise host, on the other hand, knows just how impulsive and enthusiastic his friend gets, so he kindly but firmly teaches him the art of discipline to achieve his goals, explaining him that violence is of no use here, but instead, self-control and resilience. After many trials and tests, Mars sees how his dedication pays off, and finds out that with constancy and practicality, his immense passion and drive can get him to unimaginable heights! Capricorn teaches him the required organizational and leadership skills to leave a renowned legacy well beyond his years. With his inborn initiative and fiery spirit channeled into the material realm, Mars is ready to raise an empire if he wanted to!
Personality traits: ambitious, self-made, responsible, go-getter, director, powerful, resilient, pragmatic, dedicated, strategist, organized, efficient, problem-solver, relentless, strong.
Venus in Pisces: When Venus enters the sacred and watery temple of Pisces, she is mesmerized by the enthralling type of beauty she finds in here. His generous and candid host takes her for a walk throughout the entire temple and reveals to her the mysteries of the universe. He grants her access to his secret chamber, where he teaches her the art of magic and spiritual healing, and lectures her about ancient and mystical knowledge, long forgotten to humankind, but very present and real nonetheless … these are wonders she didn’t knew existed before! Pisces knows how to inspire her soul in the most delicate and virtuous ways by reminding her of her true nature, that of divine precedence. Venus cannot help to spill what’s in her heat, so she asks her friend the tools to create beautiful music, paintings, and poems so she can share them with the world. Magnanimous and wise as he is, Pisces grants all her wishes, but also shows her the secret suffering that people are burdened with, and how cold the hearts of men have become before this pain. Awed and deeply touched, Venus’ empathy and understanding grows, and she starts to see the veil between the material and spiritual realms dissolve before her. She’s never felt such calling before! She knows her mission is to spread beauty, compassion and kindness, and she does this with unconditional love and devotion.
Personality keywords: romantic, good-natured, fair, balanced, connected, spiritual, creative, artistic, imaginative, warm, gentle, generous, understanding, devotional, forgiving, tolerant.
Jupiter in Cancer: When Jupiter enters the sanctuary of Cancer, he becomes even more lucky and faithful in life. He radiates joy and candor! This is because Cancer teaches him that without love, good-will alone is not enough to make himself and others truly happy. Jupiter is aware of this, but he sometimes can lose himself in fantasies and utopic scenarios, where he wishes things could be different instead of trying to build them into reality. He dreams and preaches, but he can sacrifice practicality in the process. When Cancer has him over, she shows him how to extend the bridge between good intentions and actions, as she’s amazing at ordering her surroundings and making a heart-felt home wherever she goes because of her innate gift for nurturing. She also helps his friend to tap into his intuition and use his common sense to tame his emotions, which can be boundless at times. She does this by treating him with praise, understanding and acceptance, so he can practice them with himself and others. Jupiter finally feels a sense of belonging, as his good intentions are not abused, misunderstood, or minimized... they are used to make good things happen. Through accessing his more feminine side, Jupiter is compelled to give selflessly more of himself to others, and since he’s in a house that governs creation and karma, what goes around comes around multiplied. By practicing morality, ethics, charity and unconditional love without expecting nothing in return, as Cancer does, he finds out that he attracts the best of fortunes.
Personality traits: kind, compassionate, loving, caring, sympathetic, cheerful, charisma, altruistic, supported, rooted, lucky, fortunate, cozy, happy, benevolent, comprehensive, soft, guided, protective.
Saturn in Libra: When Saturn is in Libra, his sobriety and coldness start to wash off and trade for diplomacy, elegance and a profound pursuit of justice and fairness. In the friendly home of Libra, Saturn feels the need to connect, as her host reminds him the importance of friends, allies, and partnerships. After all, he cannot get ahead in life alone! Saturn’s industriousness and wisdom are channeled into building loyal and lasting relationships, where all parties get what they need equally. Libra knows his reputation well, and although she recognizes that his friend can be a bit stubborn, stern and gloomy at times, she loves to lighten him up and remind him of his noble character, and how it can create enduring and strong bonds. She gives him the mission of justice and impartiality, as she knows nobody is better suited than him for his seriousness and sense of responsibility. Saturn protects and respects Libra and feels empowered because she realigns him with balance and high ideals. He does not feel rejected or lonely anymore. Libra teaches him to relax a bit and to seek pleasure from the warmth of social interactions, and in consequence, Saturn learns to apply his maturity and discipline to persuade others into creating a kinder, fairer and wiser world.
Personality traits: noble, just, dignified, committed, loyal, elegant, eloquent, responsible, diplomatic, mature, moral, impartial.
That's all! Thanks everyone for reading!😘

Mass migration has become a defining issue in many Western nations, fueling political and social tensions as countries grapple with the economic and cultural challenges of large-scale immigration—an influx that citizens never requested or voted on. With rising numbers, local populations are feeling the strain on public services, housing, and social cohesion, leading to growing dissatisfaction with immigration policies and concerns about their long-term impact.
The United Kingdom has experienced a record number of migrant crossings in recent months, with 705 people arriving in a single day across the English Channel in April. Despite new laws aimed at raising salary thresholds for work visas and tightening border controls, the country’s public services, including the NHS and housing, are struggling to keep up. Many communities are increasingly concerned about the impact of migration on crime rates, social cohesion, and local economies. Critics argue that the government’s efforts are reactive rather than proactive, and that long-term solutions are desperately needed.
Ireland, once celebrated for its open-door migration policy, is now grappling with significant challenges. A surge in asylum applications, combined with a housing crisis and rising homelessness, has led to widespread public protests. Many Irish citizens argue that the country’s resources are being stretched to the breaking point, leaving them unable to secure affordable housing or access public services. Critics of current immigration policies claim that the government’s prioritisation of global humanitarian needs is coming at the expense of Irish citizens’ well-being.
Germany has long been a major destination for migrants, particularly those fleeing conflict in Afghanistan and Syria. However, the country is facing mounting criticism over its ability to integrate newcomers. Rural areas, in particular, are struggling with overcrowded schools, rising crime rates, and social tensions. While German officials continue to push for integration policies, many citizens feel that the government is not doing enough to address the negative impacts of high migration levels. Public dissatisfaction is growing as locals voice concerns over the preservation of German culture and identity.

All right. Introspection. Vmesto terapii lol
Feeling more flayed than anticipated today because yesterday was a very very very bad pain day, and also because two discrete doctors like. Confirmed/affirmed that your chronic pain and nerve damage are actually quite serious and worse than one of them initially thought. It's bad! It IS bad! It hurts all the time! ALL the time! And if you really let yourself project the body forward into the future with a sensorimotor map then survival feels like a punishment! And you miss drugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And it feels even more unfair to be imprisoned in this body and condemned to live out your sentence inside it sober!!!!!!!! Even though that was a choice!!!!!!! It feels like a stupid one when it HURTS this much!!!!!! Practical proactive solutions that aren't getting drunk about it (because booze is inflammatory anyway and that would fuck up your guts and your joints in the long term): get a referral to the pain clinic, look for more Big Naproxens in the backup meds box (ETA: secured!), take Big Naproxens, put on neck brace, take gabapentin, tenacity/temerity/sheer stubborn stupidity of Old Daniel Molloy etc.

Too Many Damerons
Summary: People keep getting confused because there are two General Damerons and Connix is ready to tear her hair out.
Word Count: 1800+
Rating: PG-13
“It happened again,” Finn said, dropping his duffel bag next to the couch.
Poe looked up from the couch, where he was hunched over his data pad. “You’re kidding,” he said.
“Nope,” Finn said. He plopped down next to his husband. “Got there, went through the whole security check, walked in and the High Minister says, ‘Who are you?’”
“I thought Connix started verifying who they wanted when she arranged these things,” Poe said. He put his data pad away and slipped an arm around Finn’s shoulders, pulling him close.
“She did,” Finn said. “She asked if they wanted Finn Dameron or Poe Dameron and they said Finn, but apparently they thought that was you. Or you’re me. Or whatever.” He sighed. “It would be funny if it wasn’t such a damn waste of time.”
“I hear you,” Poe replied. Just a few weeks ago, he’d flown ten hours to attend a meeting only to find that the rest of the attendees were under the impression they were getting the General Dameron who was an ex-Stormtrooper. When Poe had shown up, the former troopers who had tentatively formed an alliance with the local government felt they’d been betrayed and backed out of the deal, which caused headaches for everyone, especially Poe, who had to try to explain to a cranky planetary governor that when humans got married, they used the same family name.
“Maybe Torax had the right idea,” Finn mused. The ambassador from a small backwater planet in the Outer Rim had suggested that Poe adopt a higher rank, Grand General, or Supreme General, to differentiate him from Finn.
“I told you, babe, I’m not doing it,” he said. “I don’t outrank you. We’re equals. End of story.” He kissed Finn’s temple. “Besides, all of those suggestions just reek of Imperial pretentiousness.”
“You’re right,” Finn said. “I’m just frustrated.”
“I can fix that,” Poe replied, snuggling closer.
“I’ll just bet you can,” Finn said, running his fingers through Poe’s hair. Pretty soon, Poe was sure Finn had forgotten all about the mission gone wrong. He certainly had.
***************************
“I don’t know how I can make it any clearer, General,” Connix said the next morning. “When they request to meet with General Dameron, I ask ‘Which one?’ If they say Poe, I give them Poe; if they say Finn, I give them Finn. And if they don’t know, then I ask a few questions to figure it out, but I don’t have time to play twenty questions every time someone comms us.”
“Well, it’s obvious they don’t always know who they want, even if they think they do,” Finn said. “We need to come up with a solution.”
“You could go back to being General Finn,” Rose suggested. “It’s not quite as professional, but it’s certainly clear.”
Finn shook his head. “I don’t want to do that unless we have to,” he said. It would make things easier for everyone, but he’d gotten used to being a Dameron and he still got a little thrill every time someone called him by that name. It reminded him that he had a family, a place in the world.
Poe nodded in agreement. “Yeah, let’s keep that as our final option. Maybe we just need to be more proactive. Instead of asking who they want, ask what they want and then tell them who they’re going to be dealing with.’
Connix nodded as well. “That could work. Divvy up the responsibilities between the two of you. For example, anything about defectors from the First Order goes to Finn; anything dealing with the Republic Navy goes to Poe.” She started tapping away at her data pad. “Yes, this is good. I’ll sit down with the rest of the staff and we can get a preliminary list to you by the end of the day.”
Finn relaxed in his seat. It was a relatively minor issue against the backdrop of galactic politics, but he felt better knowing it was taken care of, at least for the moment.
***************************
Rey was tinkering with an old cleaning droid when Finn arrived. “Hey, good news,” he said, sitting down beside her. He picked up a broom attachment that had clearly seen better days and raised an eyebrow at her.
She tossed the battered part aside. “Yeah, it might be beyond hope,” she admitted. “So, what’s your good news?”
“Dad’s coming,” he said. Rey immediately perked up. Kes Dameron, Finn’s father-in-law, was one of her favorite people in the galaxy, mostly because he was a fantastic cook.
“And I’m invited for dinner?,” she asked hopefully.
“Of course,” Finn said, bumping her with his shoulder. “Every day. There’s no way the three of us can eat that much, anyway.”
“Are you implying that I can?,” she said, pretending to take affront. It was a standing joke between her and Finn that she could eat him under the table. Poe was constantly amazed at the quantities the two of them could put away, but then again, he hadn’t grown up having to scrounge for every bite, like Rey, or having his nutrition carefully doled out, like Finn.
“I’m not implying it, I’m flat out stating it,” Finn replied. “Poe says we should have a separate line in the Resistance budget for the ‘Care and feeding of Jedi’ that’s actually just your grocery bill.”
“Hey, I earn every bite,” Rey retorted. “I live in the Falcon, more or less, and Force knows I don’t spend a single credit on clothes. Food is all I ask for keeping the galaxy safe.”
“A cheap price to pay to keep the Jedi master on our side,” Finn said with a laugh.
“So …,” Rey said. “Did Kes mention what he’s planning to cook the first night?”
Finn shoved her off her seat.
********************************
“Ugh. There are too many gods damned Damerons on this base,” Connix grumbled to Rose. “I swear, if those two have a kid …”
Rose laughed. “I know.” A small ship had just requested clearance to land, stating it had business with someone named Dameron. The crew barely spoke any Basic, and they’d had to haul C3-PO in from the other side of the base to translate before they could figure out that the ship didn’t want either of the Generals. They were delivering some supplies purchased by Mr. Dameron, who was planning to make an elaborate meal to celebrate some obscure Yavinian holiday that Finn has expressed curiosity about.
“I’m just going to start calling them by their first names, protocol be damned,” Connix said.
*******************************
“You can’t be referring to me by my first name when dealing with the Brexinti,” Poe told Connix. “They are very, very strict about the proper use of titles. I accidentally called the Premier Minister the Minister Prime and you’d think I killed a baby.”
“But they got confused that you both have the same title,” Connix shot back. “I was trying to make things easier for them.”
“I know,” Poe said, running his hand through his hair. “But they’re really touchy about using personal names outside of intimate situations. Like really touchy. Like, people have been shot for being too ‘familiar’ with a non-relative. According to their rules, only Finn and my dad can call me Poe. Everyone else is supposed to call me General Dameron at all times or their great ancestors will be offended.” He laid a hand on Connix’s arm. “I told them you were raised by feral loth-wolves and didn’t know any better and I think they bought it.” He winked and she rolled her eyes.
“You need to give me a raise, General Dameron,” she said.
**************************
“It surprises us that you share a title with your husband,” Premier Minister Flonx said to Finn. “Or should I say, that you share a rank with him.” She laughed nervously. The Brexinti did everything nervously, Finn had noticed. Dealing with them was like walking on eggshells all the time, everyone seemingly terrified of saying something offensive or uncouth.
“Well, our position is kind of unique,” Finn tried to explain. “When General Organa died, she made it clear she wanted Poe to take her place.” He noticed that Flonx blushed when he said Poe’s name, and he tried to remember that saying someone’s first name outside the privacy of the home was tantamount to showing nude holovids to these people. “Sorry, Commander Dameron,” he corrected himself. “So, when Commander Dameron assumed the rank of General, he felt that he wasn’t up to the task of replacing General Organa, so he asked me to be his co-General. We kind of invented the rank on the spot.” He shrugged. “We work together, and he has his areas of expertise, and I have mine. It works for us.”
“But … does it not get confusing to others?” Flonx asked delicately.
“Oh, yeah,” Finn admitted. “But we’re not as formal about things as you are here on Brexin.”
“I am aware of that,” Flonx said. “It was rather shocking to us, to be honest.” She ducked her head and whispered. “I would die of shame if anyone were to speak the Minister Prime’s first name in my presence and we’ve been working together for years. I … I still remember the first time my husband spoke my name.” She blushed deeply. “Oh, we should not be talking of such risqué things, General Dameron. You are a bad influence!” She laughed awkwardly, clearly embarrassed.
“You think I’m bad,” Finn said, “wait until you meet my husband.”
****************************************
“General Dameron!” The Minister Prime called out.
Poe and Finn both turned. “Which one?,” they said.
Minister Prime Taxli shook his head in irritation. “This is altogether too confusing,” he said. “If you don’t mind, I shall begin referring to you as First General and Second General. Premier Minister Flonx has told me that one of you was created General before the other, am I right?”
Poe nodded. “Yes, General Organa named me as her successor, and then I asked F— him to be my co-general.” He’d barely caught himself from saying Finn out loud, which would have made half the Brexinti in attendance faint.
“Very good, then you shall be First General Dameron, and your husband shall be Second General Dameron,” said Taxli. “And we can all get about our business.”
Finn leaned over and whispered in Poe’s ear. “I kind of like that idea.”
“It still sounds like I outrank you, which I don’t,” Poe insisted. He hated the thought of anyone thinking that Finn was less than what he was: a General and the finest being Poe had ever met.
“It has nothing to do with rank,” Finn insisted. “It’s just about timing. You were a general first, and then I became a general second. It makes sense, and if some people think you take precedence, who cares? We’re married, it’s not like you can walk into a gathering ahead of me, no matter how strict the rules of protocol are. Couples enter together, right? Side by side.”
Poe smiled. “Side by side,” he said. “I like that. Okay, Second General Dameron, think Connix will like it?”
“Oh, she’ll love it,” Finn said emphatically. “Anything to make her life easier. We really need to give her a raise.”

For 75 years, America’s NATO allies have relied on the U.S. nuclear arsenal to provide for the defense of Europe. This was never a terribly logical policy. As Lawrence Freedman, the doyen of British strategic historians, put it in these pages back in 1981, “The United States would be irrational to commit suicide on behalf of Western Europe, but NATO has not found this fact a decisive flaw it its strategy.”
The linchpin of the policy was a firm European belief in the steadfast commitment of Washington to the security of Europe. Today, that no longer holds: As two nuclear experts recently wrote in Foreign Policy, “The credibility of the U.S. nuclear umbrella has now been shattered by Trump.” America First leaves no room for alliance solidarity.
Europe must act in accordance with this reality. Luckily, plans for a European nuclear deterrent exist in the archives, and the European Union would do well to dust them off. The Kennedy administration’s proposal for a Multilateral Force (MLF) offers a workable blueprint for a pan-European nuclear deterrent.
Minus America, Europe finds itself unarmed in a dangerous, nuclear world. The arms control regimes developed during the Cold War have been abrogated by both the United States and Russia. China, never a signatory to the bilateral U.S.-Russia agreements of the Cold War, now seeks to expand and upgrade its own nuclear deterrent. Achieving a trilateral nuclear arms agreement would always have been tough, but without the Cold War agreements in place, the task is nigh impossible. To make matters worse, nuclear proliferation means that there are now nine nuclear powers, and Iran is on the brink of becoming the 10th.
These are powerful incentives for the EU to develop a pan-European nuclear deterrent. Relying on Washington to provide extended nuclear deterrence for Brussels is an increasingly dubious proposition. And in this nuclear world, the actors with seats at the negotiating table to forge new nuclear arms control agreements will need to be nuclear powers themselves. If Europe wants to promote nuclear arms control, it paradoxically needs to go nuclear first.
The French and British nuclear deterrents can offer a stopgap capability, especially if France joins NATO’s nuclear planning group, which it should, but over the long term, a transnational European solution is necessary as neither Paris nor London have enough nuclear weapons to secure all of Europe and neither has tactical nuclear capability, which is a critical component in escalation management. And while the Franco-British deterrent may provide short-term cover, it won’t overcome the reality that has kept NATO alive for 75 years—that a U.S. security guarantee was better than one from France or Britain.
With the credibility of the U.S. guarantee in tatters, European states may wish to revisit their own nuclear capability: As Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said in March, “We would be safer if we had our own nuclear arsenal.” But the pursuit of a new nuclear capability by any one state in Europe is likely to trigger a security dilemma for the others—if Germany were to go nuclear, would this reassure Poland, or would it incentivize Warsaw to develop its own capability? Just as the United States used nuclear sharing to manage proliferation in early Cold War Europe, Brussels would do well to manage this situation proactively via a shared European nuclear project. Moreover, the development of a nuclear arsenal is extremely costly and difficult. Coordinating a pan-European deterrent would be more economical, focusing efforts against external threats rather than internal competition.
The solution to these myriad challenges is a collective European finger on a collective European nuclear launch button. The best way to do this would be to dust off early Cold War plans for the MLF.
The MLF was a proposal to create a fleet of surface ships and submarines, crewed by European NATO allies, with the intent of giving those allies multilateral ownership and control in the nuclear defense of Western Europe.
A 1957 Belgian-Dutch report noted concerns in Europe that “the continental members of NATO do not feel adequately protected by strategic nuclear weapons which are not available either to these individual members or to the NATO community.” The Kennedy White House was particularly worried about West German nuclear ambitions and potential Franco-German nuclear cooperation. The nascent Italian nuclear program was also under close U.S. observation. The State Department’s Policy Planning Staff concluded in 1965 that the MLF “could do more to avert the spread of nuclear weapons than a non-proliferation agreement.”
The MLF was to put around 200 missiles under European control, giving the force the capability to destroy between 25 and 100 Soviet cities in countervalue strikes, designed to deter any Soviet first use. The project got so far as deploying a guided missile destroyer, the USS Claude V. Ricketts, with 174 U.S. officers and crew, integrated with crew from NATO allies, including West Germany, Turkey, and Italy. U.S. Navy Secretary Paul Nitze praised the deployment as a success.
But the NATO MLF was hampered by disagreements between Washington and the allies over basing and financing the cost of the program, as well as staunch British opposition to the idea. London preferred instead to maintain its special nuclear relationship with Washington, rather than lose it to some pan-European enterprise. In a world only two decades removed from the end of the war, the idea of a German finger on the button also attracted satirical derision. But although the MLF never fully materialized, the idea at the center of it—shared command and control—is well suited for 21st-century Europe.
Ideally, a European MLF would have at its core an Anglo-French component, as both countries currently field continuous at sea deterrents based on wholly different technologies. Whereas the French deterrent is entirely independent, the British one is not, as it is highly reliant on U.S. technology.
The first step toward a strategic deterrent manifested in a European MLF would be to begin training and integrating European officers and crew into the existing French and British platforms to develop an understanding of nuclear weapons and nuclear-powered submarines. This has the additional benefit of reassuring other European powers as to the Anglo-French commitment to European nuclear deterrence. At the same time, the EU should field special tenders for the development of a European nuclear submarine fleet. France has extensive experience with nuclear submarines, and Germany and Sweden are preeminent producers of conventional submarines. A European consortium with collective funding could develop a new nuclear-powered attack submarine for Europe—one that might eventually be shared with countries such as Australia.
Another, much quicker option is to expand the current British Dreadnought submarine program to Europe (and Australia). The reliance of these submarines on U.S. Trident missiles would require at the very least a redesign of the current “common missile compartment” scheme so that the European boats could perhaps carry French M51 missiles or the design of a new pan-European system so that the European system is completely independent of the United States. For London, there is a real threat of U.S. pushback against U.K. cooperation with the continent—but perhaps that alone should be incentive for Britain to make such a move.
The second order of business would be for the new European Nuclear Weapons Agency to create a tactical nuclear capability. The easiest way to do this would be to adapt the Storm Shadow/SCALP EG and Taurus KEPD 350 cruise missiles to accept a nuclear payload, which would provide Brussels with the necessary incremental, escalatory capability for a convincing deterrent.
For 75 years, nuclear sharing in NATO has provided the United States an ability to manage proliferation and served as a strong tool of alliance management. But the only thing certain with the Trump administration is uncertainty, and Europe must plan accordingly. Although U.S. extended deterrence theoretically still covers NATO allies, European countries would be foolish not to develop a pan-European nuclear alternative.
Doing so manages the security dilemma in Europe, will deter aggression, and will put the EU in a stronger position to push for nuclear arms control agreements. In a best-case scenario, a European nuclear deterrent will strengthen NATO, and in the worst-case scenario, if the United States abandons Europe, the continent will not be defenseless.

So you have recommendations for where to research signs of baneful magic having been performed on you or your home? Or do you have a list of signs to look out for just in case?
This is an excellent question (sorry it took me so long to get to it, this month has been BONKS) and it provides a good opportunity to talk about ambiguity and alarm systems.
Most sources that talk about how to detect signs of baneful magic will usually talk about random illnesses, accidents, bad luck, general misfortune, that sort of thing. And while it's true that these CAN be signs of baneful magic being directed your way, it's hardly a foolproof system, as these are also things that can and do happen without any magical interference. Plus, it creates kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you view any misfortune as a sign of being "cursed," then you tend to start looking for more signs and take note of every little thing that goes wrong, including things that you might normally brush off.
The only real way to know for sure that you've been cursed is to literally watch someone perform a baneful spell directed at you. Everything else is the magical equivalent of hearsay and guesswork. (Yes, even if someone TELLS you they've cursed you, since there's also a neat little trick that involves telling someone to expect the worst and then letting them suffer with the anxiety and pessimism, believing that doom is on the way, while you do next to nothing apart from encouraging the assumption. Bit of Headology for you there.) And even THEN, it's not a sure thing, since spells don't work 100% of the time.
In my experience, the best plan is to be proactive and to look to mundane examples for inspiration on how to structure magical solutions. If you want to know whether someone or something has intruded on your space, what do you do? You set up physical indicators and install some kind of security, right? If you want to know whether deer are getting into your garden, you put up a fence high enough to be a deterrent, you check the beds for prints and nibbled produce, and if you want to go the extra mile, you set up a trail cam. So do the same with your magical protections and your list of personal omens.
Add a layer to your home/personal protections that reflects, diverts, or nullifies spells sent your way that are unwanted, disruptive, or harmful. This might take the form of a defensive mirror jar or a ward that burns away or entangles those undesirable spells. It can be something you add to existing magical protections or a separate spell dedicated to the purpose, whatever works best for your needs.
In addition to this, add an entry to your list of personal omens that is specifically for Disruptive Incoming Magic. Make the sign something you're not likely to see on the regular so that you can immediately recognize it when and if it turns up. In all likelihood, you'll never need it because the possibility of actually being cursed is SO much lower than social media would have you think, but it's nice to have the failsafe.
(I fully recommend creating a list of personal omens to any witch who wants to look for signs btw. Make a list with easy-to-spot examples and clear meanings that takes natural occurrences into account. It's a great way to simplify things and not drive yourself to distraction wondering whether that spider on your floor is a Sign of Something or...just a random spider.)
So now you've got your prevention in place and you have an indicator to let you know if something does show up. It's still not foolproof, but it certainly helps.
In the meantime, just remember that witches experience accidents and illness and runs of bad luck with the same relative frequency as anyone else. The fact that something bad / a series of bad things has happened is not necessarily an indicator of the presence of baneful magic. Sometimes Shit Just Happens.
But when in doubt, you can always do a quick cleansing of your space and reinforce your protections to clear away anything unwanted that might be in the space. If nothing else, it's due diligence and it will probably make you feel better.
Hope this helps!

Microsoft says it’s making its new Recall feature in Windows 11 that screenshots everything you do on your PC an opt-in feature and addressing various security concerns. The software giant first unveiled the Recall feature as part of its upcoming Copilot Plus PCs last month, but since then, privacy advocates and security experts have been warning that Recall could be a “disaster” for cybersecurity without changes. Thankfully, Microsoft has listened to the complaints and is making a number of changes before Copilot Plus PCs launch on June 18th. Microsoft had originally planned to turn Recall on by default, but the company now says it will offer the ability to disable the controversial AI-powered feature during the setup process of new Copilot Plus PCs. “If you don’t proactively choose to turn it on, it will be off by default,” says Windows chief Pavan Davuluri.
In a welcome & surprising move, Microsoft actually listened to the shitstorm of complaints it received upon announcing Recall. So now they're encrypting the Recall snapshots, and requiring "proof of user presence" before granting timeline access. Via facial recognition(?!!).
Which is slightly better than nothing.
Obviously, the best solution would be for Windows to NOT take invasive, risky snapshots of your desktop every 5 seconds. But then again, I am not Windows chief Pavan Davuluri, answerable to millions of AI-crazed techbro stockholders so what the fuck do I know?
