The Problems With Template-based Websites

Templates are an inexpensive way to build a website, but they can cause problems for your brand, hinder your ability to grow, and cost more in the long run. In this article, discover the downsides of template-based websites and why getting a custom-made website developed by a professional is a more effective option.
Templates are not unique to your brand.
Templates are generic and are not unique to your brand, business, or industry. If you want a website that is unique and custom-made for you, then templated websites aren’t the best option.
Templates don’t adapt to changes in technology over time as well as custom sites do. For example, if a new browser comes out (like Google’s Chrome) and all of the sudden everyone wants it, then your site may look outdated because it hasn’t been built within the framework of that new browser yet.
Too many templates can cause problems for you with Google.
If you are too reliant on templates or code that is not unique, this can cause problems for your website. Google will think that you are a content farm or a duplicate content site, which means that your website may be de-indexed or penalized if it does not change its ways.
This problem is especially important for local SEO. If Google can find the same content on many sites in the same area, then they will assume those pages are duplicates of each other and mark them as such to prevent them from being displayed in search results.
Updates to the templates leave you vulnerable to security issues that the developer doesn’t fix.
If a developer designed your site with templates, and you don’t own the license to the template and decide to leave that developer for another, you will be forced to rebuild the site at your own expense. However, if your company does own the license, then your company can take the site with them and use it in its next project.
Why is this important? If you think about it, most small businesses start as one-man bands who have little experience with web design but lots of ideas on how they want their websites to look (and perform). Say they go to a developer and choose a template-based solution over custom web design based on price alone. They will likely leave in due time because they’ve got no real value out of their investment. There’s no way they could sell on such a website if they were part of an agency or even a larger company that needed something more tailored to its needs (unless perhaps it was very niche).
It is difficult or near impossible to fully edit templates without knowing programming languages like HTML or CSS.
Even if you have basic knowledge of HTML and CSS, you will likely be unable to make any changes outside of changing text and adding images. This is because most templates are highly customized and require specialized knowledge to edit them.
They often do not offer the flexibility to do what you want with your website.
As we’ve mentioned, the problem with templates is that they aren’t unique to your brand. As a rule, you don’t want to use any kind of website template on your site. You want it to look like it was designed for your business and nothing else.
The second big reason for not using templates is that Google doesn’t like them either. For example, if a visitor comes to one of our sites and sees something similar on another site, Google will think that we’re trying to game the system by creating duplicate content to rank higher than our competition (which isn’t true). If this happens enough times, then Google will demote our website in search results because they don’t trust us anymore!
Finally (and probably most importantly), when developers update their templates over time with new features and bug fixes—these updates can break things on YOUR website–and can take days or weeks before someone notices! They might even be out of business at this point.
Template sites may seem cheaper but they can be more expensive in the long run if they cause issues like low ranking on search engines or lack of functionality while leaving less room to grow in the future.
The Bottom Line:
Templates can be expensive.
Templates can be hard to update.
Templates can be difficult to customize.
Templates can be hard to maintain and secure.
Conclusion
To review, if you are looking for a website that is unique to your brand then templates are not the best option. It may cost more upfront, but in the long run, having a developer design a custom-made website will give you a better product and return on your investment. I totally wore myself out yesterday by moving furniture around AND I seem to have caught a cold, so today I took it easy and reworked my website into something I'm much MUCH happier with!
I still need to do a couple graphics for buttons here and there as well as transferring product photos so that I can actually upload them to the site. For the most part it's finished and up-to-date though!
#website#portfolio#always fun to play with html especially once you've dumped the old template that caused 99% of your problems

Soooooo...
Don't attribute to malice what can be explained by Photoshop incompetence.
This is a story of two staffers who knew just enough about Photoshop to be dangerous.
First, Zohran had someone do a basic cutout for his campaign materials. He uses this for his avatar and his website.
They did a bad job.

Maybe they had an old version of Photoshop or used the wrong selection tool, but the cutout is... rough.

I mean, it's fine.
It's a small grassroots campaign. They probably had to delegate to someone who took a single graphic design course in college.
You do what you gotta do.
I'm not hating.
I'm just saying they didn't have the experience to do this task properly.
Okay, now some dipshit at the Cuomo SuperPAC is like, "We need to make an attack ad! Make sure to mention he's a socialist! And add a monkey!"
So they task someone even worse at Photoshop to slap this together.

This is mostly a template. The template was designed by an actual artist, but the person who used the template is very much not.
You can tell by the addition of a monkey that does not fit the aesthetic.

With these templates, you just add in your assets and type words that seem negative and scary, but are actually all good things.
It's graphic design on a budget.

But there was a problem...

Oh no!
They used the magic wand tool and the previous bad selection caused things to get worse.
There are many ways to deal with this. Contract the selection. Feathering. A soft eraser. Remove the white matte. Basic masking. Refine hair. A stronger tolerance on the magic wand. Remove background. Select subject using the cloud.
You could even download a brush that emulates beard hair and carefully paint over the white edge.

SO MANY OPTIONS!
But for some reason, they chose the clone stamp tool with a large soft brush. They chose to paint over his beard using another part of his beard.
This is like a 1997 solution to this problem.
I tried it myself just to make sure my suspicions were correct.

Yep, that's what they did.

The darkening of the beard is a side effect of the template they used. It's a halftone effect meant to emulate old printers.

The effect increased the contrast which makes the whites brighter and the blacks darker. I doubt the person even realized.
I'm pretty sure people supporting Cuomo are a bunch of racists. But I don't know if this horrible beard cloning was an intentional act.
I think they used a template, did a bad selection of a bad cutout, and then use Mr. Bean-esque methods to fix their mistake.

In any case, if Zohran needs any help from a selection specialist, I'm happy to help.

So I watched Hazbin. Let the record show that I am not a hater unjustly or unduly. I will put in the effort to fully experience the thing people are dumping on to see if it's legitimate. I went in with as blind a mein as possible given that I am Online and dialed in to various goings on in my swamp. My curiosity finally got the better of me.
I know some of the background of the show and the creator of said show, I have heard rumblings from the edges of my dashes and things passing megafauna-like underneath me. These cries of 'worst fandom ever!!' are pretty overwrought for what, by my eyes, is the pretty standard slew of agitated bees that follows this kind of thing.
Before I get into some thoughts about the show I do know that there was some talk about people not being properly compensated for their work on the newest, hottest, invader zim animated television programme. I have heard various things about what vivziepop (might be spelling this wrong I'm on a fight and bored so I can't check) has done, what fans of this show are capable of blah, blah— I get it. When you've been around the loop of this stuff as long as I have you know what many fandoms and sole operators are capable of. By my metric these examples are all pretty bad. Not the worst but not the best either. Definitely stand out from the other fan based background radiation on websites and in real life.
But I'm gonna talk about only what I've directly seen (the amazon joint and youtube pilot) for both brevity and my sanity.
I sell at conventions for a living, I've done so for years and have also been at that long enough to see swells and ebbs of trends that match up with their digital counterparts. Hazbin is… special. Not often do you see merchants throwing table balance to the winds to have MULTIPLE Hazbin (Helluva thrown in there too they're basically the same thing) monocultures for what they are hawking. I get the drive behind it too, no shade, make your bag, sex sells, but I can't overstate how rare this is! Even during the heyday of Genshin (lessening now) you still had different properties orbiting the cash cow on your display. Nobody just brought one thing and one thing only.
Now, on to what I have to say about the show. I'm sure some of these points have been echoed by a pngtuber with crossed arms but I feel compelled to throw my two bits in.
The show is all together, not good. Not horrific (barring some specific instances), but firmly overwhelmingly mediocre.I watched all of it, including the pilot, and besides occasional drama crossing my dash didn't interact with it much beyond that until now. Now that I have, I am very confident with my pre-watch assertions I made based on spitballing what I saw represented on and off line. I'm good at this kinda thing, you see certain patterns emerge from the data and you can make some accurate generalizations no problem. I frequently withheld a question when I would see groups of 14 year olds in pinstripe suits looking at my prints at weeaboo united or whatever convention I was at that particular weekend. Why are kids watching this show?
I know Why kids are watching the show, Hazbin is made (probably unwittingly) to appeal to kids! This is a neutral statement, I'm not saying it was to entrap kids or anything like that. The kids are a side effect drawn to what Hazbin Is. Not a target.
The appeal comes from a few main points. The characters are all designed like babies' first OCs, they drip little details and playground style power layouts. (My mermaid tail is blue and rainbow and I can shoot lighting and I have a pet sea turtle so obviously it is good or better than your flame covered tail and psychic abilities.) They are all based on a template that is easy to replicate and iterate on with enough play in secondary characteristics to make a bonafide example of some prime Do Not Steal. (Think Sonic, My Little Pony, Homestuck.) This playbook of style is sugar on a kitchen floor to ants.
The characters all say and do stuff with no deeper implication or subtlety, conflicts are raised and finished in minutes if not at least by the end of the episode. They have large gestures, big emotions, little depth, and huge expressions. They are stage acting, and the flat compositions in the storyboarding and directing reflect that. They are tell and almost never show. They walk on the screen and go I'M SAD or I'M MAD with no real subtle work. Yes there's sex, drugs, and alcohol, but, like. Conceptually you easily have characters acting like they're in saturday morning cartoons.
The overacting is great when you're sakuga brained like I am but it is so all the time and in your face that it just ends up feeling like those twitter videos of 60fps interpolated anime openings. (God I fucking hate those things.) Every character is moving and talking and wiggling around so much that it's like parents trying to catch the attention of a crying baby with hastily jingled keys. Even the swearing and the depictions of the more devious acts are so… juvenile. Everything feels like a combination of boys talking in hushed giggles at the back of the bus and what you scribbled in the back of your history notes among the drawings of the best realistic eye you could put out at the time. Like I highly doubt any of the audience knows what 'bolivian marching powder' is or does. And I don't think its main writer does either? Like one of the characters is in high profile porn, like at least make his vice a designer drug? It's like when kids speculate on what it would be like to be white girl wasted with barely trying a sip of Mom's vodka out of the cabinet.
So you got the combo of these character designs which mirror every tumblr sexyman since the bronze age and a very paint by numbers barbie house of characters. Of COURSE it bags kids like fortnight und cola. But like, why are people in charge just letting this rock? Is more my question. Who is letting Timmy get at a new glossary of stuff to yell at his substitute teacher? Don't answer, this is rhetorical. I'm all for letting kids self select but I kinda worry about this one and what it's doing to the teens. I'm sure someone more willing to explore that has said smarter stuff than me. But what I can see is you have the volatile type of person (kid or not) who is attracted to what I just listed grappling with badly handled (fumbled most of the time, let's be honest) adult stuff. This is the recipe in how you get a fandom that acts like this one acts.
My next thoughts concern Concepts and Themes. The ones here of heaven and hell are just kinda skated over as set dressing. In fact everything in the show is more like the plato's allegory of shit to stand on. It's basic on basic. Hell being an alright bunch and heaven being snooty know it alls has been done, demons that are niceys has been done, even interpersonal relationships set with a backdrop of a home for wayward characters has been done. Like again color by numbers isn't BAD! Just because these things have all been done doesn't mean you can't learn from and uplift your own idea with what came before. In fact, when you're having trouble making something a quote always comes to mind.
Wholesale ripping a chunk out of red letter media here: "Now I need to explain that I don’t think that all movies," ((Shows for my use case)) "-should be the same, or conform to the same kind of structure, but it works well in certain kinda movies. So unless you’re the Coen Brothers, David Lynch, Paul Thomas Anderson, Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, Lars Von Trier, David Cronenberg, Gus Van Sant, Quentin Tarantino, John Waters, Wes Anderson, Sam Peckinpah, Terry Gilliam, Martin Scorsese, Werner Herzog, or Jim Jarmusch, you really shouldn’t stray away too far from this kind of formula."
It's clear that this show has its roots in musicals. (Not just in the presence of musical interludes, the talky bits too.) Musicals often are color by numbers stories that expertly perform these fundamentals. They are a perfectly cooked egg. Simple, but a test. If you can't do the basics you cannot be expected to deliver on anything more complicated! It's also obvious that Hazbin's nest was lined with disney musicals specifically. I have my qualms about disney, especially the disney of today, but that's not for right now. Disney by and large knows how to color in said book to the point that it's a formula, and if you can't study this formula to excel at the formulaic you kinda deserve the crit.
You have rules and lore set by your world and you don't follow through with anything, your plots all revolve around introducing the coolest character yet or making your favorites even cooler but not like. Actually. Exemplifying what the hell is going on. I know people here are going to counter that they didn't have time it was only a handful of episodes with no knowledge if they were gonna get more, but so much of the show is donated to bad dialogue that goes nowhere, points and facts that the audience knows that are reiterated half a dozen times for no reason. They had TONS of time.
While I'm on the subject of dialogue, the dialogue is one of the things that is not mediocre but straight up bad. I already listed why above but to cite a specific example of something I haven't touched on, dear god you cannot lampshade your own bad writing by having the characters calling it bad. It is Marvel style spandex is stupid and comics are silly am I right guys 'jokes'. This 'joke' happens at least three different times in vitro and it made me audibly groan every time.
I am not a musical person nor am I musically trained but many of the songs are lyrically poor, abruptly plonked into the narrative, unfitting compositionally or, uh, poorly sung. The cast of VAs is insane, (looking at you David) and also often badly vocally directed. They are trying their best with the script but I'm more talking about how they are mixed. I found it hard to understand what was being said much of the time due to technical failures. Guys like Keith David can phone in a performance and Sell it to me better than some of the other actors putting their foot into it and that juxtaposition is also a form of whiplash that the show excels in. Vaggie is probably the worst offender for not being able to pick up the slack in this regard.
The characters being over and somehow under done lies also in their designs and the style that the show wants. I could talk for days about how much I dislike the sticks with a bunch of junk hanging off of them type of look. Nightmare to animate, no good character variation. I didn't even know what some characters were supposed to BE or represent. Alistor is a deer? Charlie is a faun of some sort? Where? Huh?
Too much red!!!! Too much!!!!! Red backgrounds, red characters, everything is a MESS, this is one of the things that actually gets me mad. There are no values! Everything fades into visual noise, which when you pair it with the animation constantly gesticulating at you and everything being bolted on with spirit halloween leftovers makes a leaf and stick tornado. (Nitpicky as well but pick a line weight and color and stick with it.) When blue or yellow came on screen I would audibly shout in excitement.
Multiple characters have tophats. Stop.
I'm not going to go into what I would do to fix the plot or design documents, I know it's been done to death.
God, where was I, I think I'll just finish this off with thoughts about the characters and then open the floor to comments or questions. I don't mean to make this a proper essay.
Charlie: I really dislike her, she's a weak character that has the IM TELLING HOW IM FEELING AND HOW YOU, THE VIEWER, IS SUPPOSED TO FEEL disease bad. Her design is one of the worst. I don't root for her much! Which is bad because she's the main character and I'm at least supposed to feel for her?
The snake guy: He had an arc. He's probably the most endearing.
Angel dust: the pathos they tried with his story beats is ruined by whipping back and forth between irreverent and WAY too heavy handed. People cried? What? Also the pig showing up for its two appearances to sell irl plushies was bad. His back and forth with other characters is hard to watch, and his capitulation to be better both feels forced and confusing. I don't think they know what to do with him. Why is porn bad in hell.
Husk: hi keith david. Bad design so fucking busy. They scaled him back from the pilot and I still flinch thinking about those tie downs. Why is alcoholism bad in hell.
Tv guy: better episode time than most of the other characters to the point where I suspect multiple writers to have been put in the time out chair
Nifty: Gir redux but with none of the heart
Vaggie: they were going for a wholesome lesbian relationship or toxic codependency and managed to do neither well. She has the weakest vocal performance, the name thing is bad, I thought she was supposed to be based off an owl or bird of prey but apparently not?
Mimzy: why are you even here
Lucifer: design so bad he falls into the background when he should stand out THE MOST. No episode, saying you're depressed and estranged from your daughter isn't an emotive beat you have to Show that by doing things.
There's so much I could say about carmella, the overlords, the other V's, adam, heaven in general, the over-designed incidentals, the exorcists, but I'm TIRED.
Alistor.
Man. This fucking guy.
His ethos is one of the worst in that hes just dripping in conflicting ideas from toe to head. He's based off voodoo? He's the 'coolest' one?!?!? He's word salad. Eldritch, forest, radio, dapper, fox like, the teeth, the staff, the vocal filter, he's a deer????! cannibal chaotic neutral shadow manipulator play pretty. He takes valuable screen time from everyone to blow keyframes and my time in being the 'coolest' most bad ass for real bro made in a lab to clinch a demographic annoyance.
Where do you go when you die in hell? If you died in heaven do you go back there? Nobody tried to crack getting into heaven before? Expediting a culling six months when you do it every year isn't as punitive as it comes off, where are the steaks? Why does charlie care so much about hell? Where are 'her people'? Why does charlie know that heaven wants to quell an uprising? Why don't angels know they can be hurt? Why does Vaggie not know? Why aren't people in hell doing like. Actual for real bad things most of time? You have a whole town of cannibals, something that's pretty rare, but barely anyone on any kind of watch list. Why is Lucifer estranged when he's clearly just awkward and it gets better almost immediately? Why does charlie not know anything about her country despite living there?
Auhhhhgh okay I'm done, I'm done. Like I'm frustrated okay!!!

Simblr.cc
I made a website!
Now you've probably seen the attempt before, people getting mad at tumblr and then making a 'Simblr' (Tumblr clone). Though, despite tumblr being sometimes a bit frustrating because of their changes, that's not why this site came to be...
I wanted a place where Storytellers, Creators, and just generic sim players can all be together and get the exposure and fun that they deserve.
Not only that, but also for a place where the TSM community and TS1 can belong somewhere too without the use of a forum.
And eventually, I hope we can make it the home for Life by you and Paralives when that comes out :)
Plus, it's also NSFW friendly! While the site is initially PG-13, we've got tags and profile settings that allow you to browse NSFW items as well.
Simblr.cc:
Discord:
What can I find on Simblr.cc exactly?
Anything for all sims games, really! TS1, TS2, TS3, TS4 and TSM
Practically anything you technically can find on Tumblr and really other sim websites. We've got...
Mods
I've specifically made filters for different games, and their needs in mind. For example, for TS2 there are so many awesome game fixes out there and clean templates, that you'll be able to navigate and find this easily.
Not only that, items can also be put in multiple categories! Especially great if you've uploaded a set!
You can also find Testers wanted only mods here if you feel like helping out fellow simmers with testing!
NOTE:
Mods do go through a "queue", but not in the same way as you may have experienced on MTS or TSR. I merely check if it's flagged as NSFW correctly, and then it's good to go! :) So the waiting time will be much less!
See TOU: Click me!
Eventually, I may see if I can get a bypass system in place, but that really depends on if NSFW isn't too confusing.
Work In Progress
To show off your work to others! Even if it's project #94882 that may never get released, any WIPS are fine!
Stories
It's really difficult to find new Sim stories or Legacies on Tumblr, let alone for these writers to get people to read their awesome stories! Hopefully this should make the process much easier now!
Also! You got any comic or "movie/cinematic" like stories? No problem! Just check the "carousel only" option, so no description needed!
Feed
... and for the Simblrs here, a feed to see all the people you follow, their content (stories, WIPs, mods and general posts)! Or, simply check out sitewide, or even game-related, what people have been posting!
Customizable profile pages
Just like tumblr, you can make your own profile page! With it's own colours and a pre-made theme. (if you need a different profile page, though, Let us know on the discord)
Want a peek? Here you go:
What about moderation?
While there's a report system in place, and the items in the queue are checked for NSFW, but users could still turn their non-NSFW to a NSFW, items may be stolen. So do report these as that will never be condoned!
Additionally, all comments you get on your mods, story, etc. Those are primarily moderated by you. You can delete them, you can turn comments off even if you'd like. If things really go wrong, you can always ask an admin.
Got any ideas? Feel free to share!
Since I really wanted it to be a website we all create together in some degree, if you have any features you're missing or would like to see, feel free to share on the discord!
Where are the Advertisements?
If you're currently not seeing them as of reading the post, that's because that's still being set up. This is merely to cover the cost of the website! Though, I promise you I won't bombard the site with ads, as that's just annoying.

do you have any posts already or if not would you be willing to share any information about what the process of getting the website up and running was like? i'm really interested in getting a site going for some other photo/record keeping projects and i know a decent amount about website design and basic html, but not that much about the process of actually getting it online;^;
Happy to share!
To be clear, my level of coding skill began with teaching myself html for neopets and ended with cobbling together vaguely custom css for my OG personal tumblr in 2011. So in terms of the physical backend of the website… it’s just Squarespace.
Getting it online is pretty simple if you’re not writing the code yourself, but there’s some stuff you’ve got to figure out first: what the name of your site will be, what url (domain) you want it to have, where to buy it, and where you want to host the site (like squarespace or Wordpress).
Once you’ve got the details sorted, you get an account on the hosting platform you want to use, and then set up the site and connect a domain. Squarespace lets you buy domains directly through their interface, but it tends to be more expensive than buying it directly from a registrar company like Namecheap or GoDaddy. If you’re comfortable teaching yourself to navigate basic internet stuff via Google, it isn’t too hard to learn how to tell a domain you bought elsewhere to point at your site. (Everything I’ve done to run all my websites has been self-taught via Google and Reddit, with the assistance of some very patient techie friends).
Once you’ve got the crunchy stuff set up, you build the site! I use Squarespace preferentially over Wordpress because a) I like the aesthetic of the templates and b) it’s what I know how to use. Wordpress is cheaper but trying to navigate the visual layout of the site annoyed me to the point it wasn’t fun anymore, so I personally will pay for ease of access on layout and design stuff.
To build the site, I thought through what I wanted the user experience to be, and how I wanted people to navigate, and I built with that in mind. For the photo repository, my goal was very clean visuals that really showcased the photos, and I wanted people to be able to navigate the taxonomy both visually and from a list. Honestly, just play with it, and try different things until you find a layout you like.
Then you try to break the site you’ve built. Because there will be errors and bugs and as much as I do appreciate it when y’all send me problems you encounter, I’d rather fix it first. I always check a new site on a desktop computer, tablet, and phone, and then ask a couple friends running different operating systems to do the same. That’s a good time to get feedback on things like layout and font size and readability, too.
The biggest time sink for the project has actually just been the photo management. I had to figure out how I needed things organized to build the site, and then taking the time to upload them all is the major rate-limiting factor.
You can launch the site so it’s “online” at any point during this process after you’ve paid for hosting and the domain and set it up, but I tend to wait until I’ve built the site and beta tested it sufficiently.
I’m happy to answer other questions, I’m just not sure what else would be helpful!

Who is your favourite companion?
TOURNAMENT MASTERPOST
propaganda under the cut
Ace McShane
She's brilliant. One of the best written and developed companions of the classic series, such a template for the modern era. So many different fates and stories across the different media. If you don't love her in one you're bound to in another. And then she got her return in the new era to boot. Oh yeah; and beating the crap out of a Dalek with a Gallifreyan enhanced baseball bat. What a legend. she's... ACE! (@seven-times-champion /@elden-12 )
Ace is the natural predecessor to modern female companions. She's a fighter, smart, caring, an explosives "expert", a match for the Doctor despite being so young. She follows her own morality, will smash a dalek with a baseball bat no problem, and has a banging wardrobe! (anonymous)
Donna Noble
you already know who she is bc she's the most iconic companion of all time. imagine teleporting into the tardis on the worst day of the doctor's life (so far) and not clocking any of his angst and SCREAMING at him to take you back to your wedding not only is this THE funniest introduction it's symbolizing how she saw the doctor at their worst, underneath the front that they put up, and due to this she understands them on a level like nothing else and changes their life forever. "you don't just need someone to stop you, you need someone to keep you going". AHHHHHH. she isn't in love with the doctor she calls them out whenever they're being awful and need to be whacked on the back of the head. she is filled with so much compassion for the smallest person she reminds ten of the kindness that was beaten out of him and she is so so loving to everyone except for herself. she loves her trans daughter so much. she changed the narrative of the doctor back from the tragedy it was into something hopeful. healing is real and possible through the power of queerplatonic relationships actually. donna sweep or i blow up the website (@aq2003 )
#showdown 2k24: semis#COME ON ACE!!!#come on shes the only hope left for a non nuwho companion in the finals#and if that wasn't enough shes awsome#she loves explosives#she hates rules#she once burnt down an old manor house#ace's girlfriend of the week is an entire category of side characters#she supports charlton athletic (<- only i care about this because my grandad supports charlton athletic so I know she has good taste)#also i believe sophie aldred still owns the jacket#also one time she started turning into a cat then 20 years later she called the master a cat boy because the same thing happened to him als#also not to be that fan#but nuwho companions owe their existence to her#she is the proto nuwho companion#her dna is in all of them#vote ace please please please

I currently have my latest blogpost for my website displayed on my front page. If you click on the title, it will take you to the post. I essentially grab the Title, which is a class of h1, and the article, using javascript, and then replace it. However, right now, this is done by manually replacing the href of the javascript. This works; I just create a post, copy the link, and paste it into the script in my home page.
Problem; I am already maintaining my rss feed manually. Why should I do *this* manually? I kind of want to not do either manually.
Solution: Javascript can be used to parse a xml doc. This includes rss feeds. I can simply make a script that, when you load up the webpage, it will request the most recent version of the .xml file associated with my file, then find the one with the most recent pubDate, it will then grab the link from that, and use my existing script to display it on my homepage.
As for updating my rss feed? I may need to create a php script for that. I just need two forms, and a submit button. One will take a link, and the other would be the password. So, I create a new blogpost, upload it, and then copy the link into the form. The password field will be used to create a cryptographic hash, and if it matches the provided one, then it will create a timestamp, and add the item, complete with links, to the html file. I could add in a hidden description to the blogpost, and the script can rip the description from there. Its pretty simple, and I wouldn't trust this authentication process... except that it is extremely limited in scope. All it does is accept a link already part of my blog, and updates an xml document - one I regularly back-up.
I also want to make a script that would get the previous and next posts on the blog, based on the info already in the xml document, rather than manually updating the existing blogposts. It doesn't take long, but it would be one less thing I have to worry about. I just have to match the current link to one in the xml file, get the timestamp, and find the item with the previous and next timestamp, then inject the links into the previous/next buttons. I can use a span element that will be updated to show up once a new document is found by the script.
If I was making one that actually allowed you to write a blogpost - complete with html - then I would want better security - like some form of 2 factor authentication. My authentication script would work. I would also want it limited to posting based on the time (like 1 post per x minutes). I may actually do that later. It would be nice to just go to my site, use my passkey+password authenticator, and then just post to my blog. It would have a form for the title, short description, and the main post. Then, it takes that info, and essentially pastes it into a provided template.
I could also make a similar system for the site-updates and little blurb on the top. Currently, I just edit the html for that. But I could also make an xml document, and just have the posts contained in items like an rss feed, then have the javascript read from there. Use a php script to add new entries to it. They could even be in the same file, just have to use two different elements.
Finally, on the main page, you can click on the title of the blog post to link there. This is done via script, so there is no mouseover indication that you can do this. I want to make the title element change a bit when you mouseover it - perhaps make it a little paler on mouseover?

honestly as someone who uses wattpad, there is a LOT of "bad boy/billionaire/vampire/werewolf" tropey books out there...but there are also really good ones that have amazing characters and plots. Whilst I don't appreciate wattpad being like "top picks for you!!11" and recommending downright boring stuff, I do end up finding original works which are genuinely interesting. Wattpad has a problem with encouraging these tropey reads, but I do think it depends on the writer - and I think that's definitely why we're in this cycle of: author wants to write for readers >>> uses tropes and cliches >>> churns out book that doesn't have depth >>> repeat. It depends on who is writing, which is why authors are such an important aspect of this discussion. I do think wattpad is getting better somewhat (diversity is highlighted and celebrated which leads to marginalised groups writing diverse characters; the stuff they have put out from their own movie studios recently, like Bootcamp, is actually good) - but it still has a long way to go.
Oh, absolutely, I agree. Wattpad does have a few hidden gems (also a frequent user of Wattpad - I write mostly fanfic on there) but yeah what's being promoted recently is shit.
Aside from onus being on the writer, it's also on the readers of Wattpad's works, which happen to be pretty much most ex if not current Booktok girlies. And it absolutely does feed into that vicious cycle of authors writing for an audience and not themselves.
It's funny, authors are actually a crucial part of this discussion but these discussions (as well as the consumers of the typical, boring Wattpad stories) seem to leave authors out. I reckon it has a lot to do with not only the commercialisation, but also the consumerism that is books and literature. I saw someone else under the #anti booktok tag say this - Booktok is the fast fashion of literature, and I completely agree. I also think this applies to this big TV adaptations of at best, mid Wattpad stories. Authors nowadays aren't being included in the discussion because they're hardly relevant to their own works anymore. They're just churning out these cookie cutter books that don't say anything about what they believe in. The only authors who become individually famous are authors like Colleen Hoover, for her egregiously misogynistic books, and SJM, for being the template for every Booktok success. In the case of CoHo, I truly believe she's just an author trying to make a quick buck, who doesn't really give a shit about what's in her books, and the same for SJM, though her misogyny is much more subtle and better received.
I also see issue with Wattpad trying to both be a fanfiction website and a serious cooperation who wants to publish books. Don't get me wrong; I don't think authors should be discouraged from writing original stories on Wattpad. I just think that Wattpad is more like training wheels rather than an actual publishing company. Merging the fanfic tendencies of Wattpad stories with authors who are genuinely trying to make it big just results in fanfic-y original stories (which is what Wattpad promotes, because that's their audience. And when they adapt into big TV adaptations, more people want their literature to be fanfic. Which makes trying to make it as an author who wants to delve deep into issues difficult, because the fast fashion, anti intellectualism of reading won't allow for books that stray from the template). This bleeds into Booktok too.
I trust your tastes, anon. It's a real pity that Wattpad promotes the tropey over the well written stuff, because I know for a fact there is good stuff on there.
NOTE: I have been lurking online after writing my response to this ask, and found that a lot of queer stories were shadowbanned, courtesy of its new AI, despite not breaking any guidelines. There's no confirmation of it, but I've been keeping my eye out for any.
Thanks for the ask! Appreciate it as always (I always manage to sneak in a dig at Booktok - it's tradition now).

fundamentally you need to understand that the internet-scraping text generative AI (like ChatGPT) is not the point of the AI tech boom. the only way people are making money off that is through making nonsense articles that have great search engine optimization. essentially they make a webpage that’s worded perfectly to show up as the top result on google, which generates clicks, which generates ads. text generative ai is basically a machine that creates a host page for ad space right now.
and yeah, that sucks. but I don’t think the commercialized internet is ever going away, so here we are. tbh, I think finding information on the internet, in books, or through anything is a skill that requires critical thinking and cross checking your sources. people printed bullshit in books before the internet was ever invented. misinformation is never going away. I don’t think text generative AI is going to really change the landscape that much on misinformation because people are becoming educated about it. the text generative AI isn’t a genius supercomputer, but rather a time-saving tool to get a head start on identifying key points of information to further research.
anyway. the point of the AI tech boom is leveraging big data to improve customer relationship management (CRM) to streamline manufacturing. businesses collect a ridiculous amount of data from your internet browsing and purchases, but much of that data is stored in different places with different access points. where you make money with AI isn’t in the Wild West internet, it’s in a structured environment where you know the data its scraping is accurate. companies like nvidia are getting huge because along with the new computer chips, they sell a customizable ecosystem along with it.
so let’s say you spent 10 minutes browsing a clothing retailer’s website. you navigated directly to the clothing > pants tab and filtered for black pants only. you added one pair of pants to your cart, and then spent your last minute or two browsing some shirts. you check out with just the pants, spending $40. you select standard shipping.
with AI for CRM, that company can SIGNIFICANTLY more easily analyze information about that sale. maybe the website developers see the time you spent on the site, but only the warehouse knows your shipping preferences, and sales audit knows the amount you spent, but they can’t see what color pants you bought. whereas a person would have to connect a HUGE amount of data to compile EVERY customer’s preferences across all of these things, AI can do it easily.
this allows the company to make better broad decisions, like what clothing lines to renew, in which colors, and in what quantities. but it ALSO allows them to better customize their advertising directly to you. through your browsing, they can use AI to fill a pre-made template with products you specifically may be interested in, and email it directly to you. the money is in cutting waste through better manufacturing decisions, CRM on an individual and large advertising scale, and reducing the need for human labor to collect all this information manually.
(also, AI is great for developing new computer code. where a developer would have to trawl for hours on GitHUB to find some sample code to mess with to try to solve a problem, the AI can spit out 10 possible solutions to play around with. thats big, but not the point right now.)
so I think it’s concerning how many people are sooo focused on ChatGPT as the face of AI when it’s the least profitable thing out there rn. there is money in the CRM and the manufacturing and reduced labor. corporations WILL develop the technology for those profits. frankly I think the bigger concern is how AI will affect big data in a government ecosystem. internet surveillance is real in the sense that everything you do on the internet is stored in little bits of information across a million different places. AI will significantly impact the government’s ability to scrape and compile information across the internet without having to slog through mountains of junk data.
#which isn’t meant to like. scare you or be doomerism or whatever#but every take I’ve seen about AI on here has just been very ignorant of the actual industry#like everything is abt AI vs artists and it’s like. that’s not why they’re developing this shit#that’s not where the money is. that’s a side effect.#ai#generative ai

No one remembers Anime Spiral
What do kids even do on the internet? I'm genuinely asking. Everything revolves around social media and that's fine but what do they do. Are their cool things they can do anymore?
There used to be websites and you would just wander the internet on the family computer. Newgrounds. Gaia Online. Neopets. Yahoo Games. Quizzila. Live Journal... I'm not saying they were all great but they were something to do and... no i'll commit, they were great. I wasn't worried about posting pictures of myself when i was busy watching a flash animation of Dragonball Z that someone put painstaking hours into.
A lot of younger kids and teens don't know how to download something and save it to a particular folder on their computer because they've never used a computer. Meanwhile we were somehow... coding our Myspace pages to have a particular background. When did we acquire that knowledge?
In 2004/2005 i went looking for Inuyasha pictures, as one did, and i stumbled upon a site of people posting fanfiction? Sign me up... Anime Spiral was the wild west of chaos fanfic writers. People would make banners for their work that would sit in their summary sections. God help you, but those seizure inducing flashing colors were going to get your attention.
People would write anything, stories, poems, lyrics. People would post art and open commissions for people to ask for things in the comments, and the OP would just do it... There were frantic collaborations. Some were really good. Some were really bad.
There were chaotic originally stories with random anime characters thrown in for fun because who was going to tell them they couldn't? Some people just ranted to anime characters and i will always remember Ask Sesshomaru where you'd ask Sesshomaru a question in the comments and the next chapter he would answer every.single.question. The fact that it was probably a 16 year old girl writing that just didn't matter.
Some people just posted picture of anime characters. They did all the internet searches so you didn't have to! They were harder to find then.
The comment/response section to this day... was the best format i've seen on a fanfic site (imo). It was so easy. I miss it! I miss going to my word processing class and pulling up that site and chatting with people in the freaking comments of whatever...terrible story i'd posted at the time. I was probably so proud of it then but yikes...
The notification system was good and it was easy to talk to people without it feeling intrusive.
Maybe Anime Spiral was Tumblr before Tumblr.
I met two strangers on Anime Spiral a week apart. Internet dangers weren't as obvious then as they seem now. Those two strangers became two of my best friends. It's been nearly twenty years and they are still so prevalent in my life.
I met my best friend on that site. That seems so impossible to me now. We never would have met otherwise and i can't imagine my life without them. We were so upset when Anime Spiral went down. We missed the ugly green and mustard yellow template to this day.
It wasn't a great site, it had it's problems... It had a lot of problems but at the same time, it was a great site. It's hard to find people who even remember Anime Spiral anymore. Going to FF .net or Fiction Press afterwards felt like... a downgrade somehow. The systems overly complicated and it lacked...something.
I do enjoy the hell out of AO3, it actually checks all the boxes for a great writing site, but i'll always remember the chaotic nostalgia of Anime Spiral.
What do kids do on the internet now? Is it safe? Is it just selfies, gossip, and bullying? Do you have a little dragon you can take care of? Neopets could take up a lot of their attention. I don't think 2024 Neopets is the same as 2005 Neopets and that's a shame.
I have no idea. I feel old.

Hello guys, I know this might come as a surprise to a lot of you, especially those who has watched my content for multiple years, but I've made the decision that I will be leaving YouTube permanently. But before that, a word from the sponsor of this video Squarespace.
> Squarespace is the absolute easiest way to make your website. I've used them for a few different sites. I basically bought that domain to be sure nobody else could. I didn't really have the time or need to create a fancy website, so I just spent about 15 minutes to throw together a landing page. It was incredibly easy with the Squarespace template and, in my opinion at least, it looks great. Now I can give people one link that takes them to a page with the link to all my different social media profiles. You can really create a landing page like this, a blog, a store, really anything with Sqaurespace and what's best is that you can get 10% off your first order by using the code "lmao" over at squarespace.com/lmao. That also helps you help the message. So please do go check out Squarespace at squarespace.com/lmao. Now back to the video.
It's wasn't easy for me to come to the decision to stop creating videos, since I really enjoyed making enjoyable content for all of you. But after all the recent drama surrounding the morality of my underground mice fighting ring, my embezzlement of "one bazillion gazillion dollarydoos", and the unproven baseless accusations of me murdering 26 Phandalin residents in broad daylight, I find it difficult to continue producing content on YouTube. So unfortunately I am forced to end my 39 video long series discussing whether Kirby has gone too woke (the lawyer, not the game).
However, just because I'll stop posting videos on YouTube, it doesn't mean you won't see me around in the future. I'm actually trying to adapt to a new platform for which to host my content, that I feel more politically aligned with. I actually have a big project that I'm working on that site. So I'm excited to announce that I'm partnering up with LiveLeak to create my new video, "Recreating the trolley problem with my fans in real life"! I'll be releasing the details of this project to the police soon, so please stay tuned!
That's the end of this video, thank you ALL for watching, please like and subscribe if you enjoyed this video, and I'll be seeing YOU in the next video! Goodbye!
#april fools#im so busy lmao#i didnt think i had time for april fools#hope you enjoy it#but april fools is ending for me so i gotta go now#just to be clear i dont post on youtube
