people who add non-autogenerated subtitles to videos are the most attractive people on this planet and allowed to steal one (1) thing from my home. including a kiss
#if they’re competently done and timed well it can be open mouth#I love subtitles#i say ‘yippee!! yeehaw!’ and dance a little jig whenever I can watch a video with closed captioning on#NOT autogenerated subtitles though. proper ones#if you have a budget for a youtube video there is no reason to not add subtitles.#yes it’s time consuming but you can pay a professional to caption them. OR do it yourself#also if you deliberately turn off autogen captions and don’t supply a sufficient replacement then I get to steal something from your house#and it will not be a smooch. but it might be violent#auditory processing disorder#APD#disabilities#hoh#deaf#youtube#subtitles#shut up riley

There's no way, no way– I can't even put on my old blazer–! [He struggles, but eventually succeeds in putting it back on] It's too hot, Chat! I can't do it, I might not be able to do it, I might not be able to wear this for long, for real. It wasn't supposed to be seen, these weren't meant to be visible, ok? [The pants] weren't supposed to look like this. Relax, it's because I'm not wearing the right pants, ok? It looks better from afar, alright?
Pac: I'm not that short, I'm 175 cm, guys! You're calling me– no, I'm not.

I was accepted to a paid video editing internship and a lot of the work is very reminiscent of what I used to do here. It makes me so happy to know that my silly little Tumblr blog gave me good practice :3 I hope everyone is doing well <3 Tell me what you're going to be for Halloween!

if you’re a YouTuber with a large audience, and you actually make profit from said audience, you should be legally obliged to hire someone to subtitle your videos or be sentenced to sensory deprivation torture
#these motherfuckers have 4million subs and their own production companies and they can’t afford a professional to do their subtitles?#or even a new microphone after like 3 years??#get your shit together!’#angry thoughts while deep cleaning the house for new year

The subtitles on The Professionals are always bad but this episode has had some real humdingers, including the opening line being subtitled as "Fuck! Come on in," and Bodie and Doyle asking if they should put on their "flax jackets."
They may be very stylish in their flax jackets but I suspect they will not protect them against bullets
#the professionals#i'll be honest. i can't actually figure out what the man who was subtitled as fuck was actually saying#it did in fact sound like fuck#however this was on tv in the 70's so i don't think that's what it was

infuriating when you've spent countless hours since last week translating movies for a movie festival and then you see yet another post on the internet saying "omg why aren't subtitles exactly 100% what is being said in a movie ://". killing myself
#WRITING IS NOT THE SAME AS SPEECH#THERE ARE ONLY SO MANY WORDS YOU CAN READ QUICKLY#AND YOU DON'T WANT A BLOCK OF TEXT TO COVER THE ENTIRE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN FOR MINUTES ON END AAAAAAAA#there are regulations that translators have to follow#and i assume it's the same for people who create subtitles for the original language#i hate those yt non-professional subtitles where they put the entire sentence on the screen#kills any suspense

god that one post pisses me off. "if you're captioning something you should always write down what they're actually saying and not [speaks foreign language]". especially now someone added "yeah do all the songs too!!". like ok yes in an ideal world that would be wonderful but it drives me absolutely bananas that most people have no idea where these captions come from. the amount of work it takes to create them. who they're written by. becuase 99% of the time it is someone in the global south, severly underpaid and overworked, who does not know what the characters are saying in the language they don't speak. are you seriously asking these people to just. guess? transliterate as best they can? then people would be pissed off that it's not done properly! they would be (correctly) insulted by that!! and the amount of training and resources required to do it properly is simply not going to happen, because the companies don't give a shit. you are asking for labor, man. be fucking serious for a second.
#sorry. i wanted to caption professionally for a while there and eventually had to give up because it just isn't feasible nowadays#(for most people)#the amnt of time involved is just astronomical compared to what you can charge#the outsourcing companies have brought the standard of work down so low so they can do it as cheaply as possible#and now that's what the market accepts.#this is in no way the people working there's fault. they are doing their best.#that's what gets me man they're doing their best and the people walking around making demands have NO idea the work involved#im disabled too man like. i use subtitles. i agree that it's bullshit you're not allowed to swear in them#it IS infantilising and abelist!!#i think it's bullshit that other languages and songs aren't involved in them too!!#but in order for that happen the companies would have to CARE.#both the captioning companies and the media commissioning the captions#and they don't care. and making that out to be the workers' fault pisses me the fuck off#NUANCE. anyway.#momo talks

I am learning so many things, the Funimation merger with CR and the almost doubling (!!!) of cost of subscription is crazy. Yeah no wonder RWBY renewal hangs in the balance, I don't even think RT could possibly get an audience through that, it wouldn't be ideal for either side. I think that must've influenced the turn in strategy internally.
#I also imagine that the professional contract with CR was a nightmare lol#I don't like CR. they took away my subtitles!#the [redacted] topic

Being bilingual is great bc I can justify watching the same 6 hours of content for the third time in 10 days to see how they translated the dialogue <3
#ok jokes aside I am actually very inchrested#I checked out the subtitles on my. first two . watches but just for the parts#where they were talking about characters using they/them#(they did a phenomenal job of constructing sentences in a way that omitted gendered language#while making it sound natural)#NOT an easy thing to do in russian and I am very impressed#not even like. oh well Most of the time#as far as I can tell beelezebub for example doesn't get gendered even once#(plus other characters too)#now I'm gonna see how they did the rest of the dialogue#I will probably not like it. but that is bc I am particular about my wording#and I am also not a professional translator#we will see

I've just finished episode 5 of Vivant, and I have to say, I really love and appreciate the mix of languages on this show. You just KNOW that if this show were American, all the "Balkan"/Mongolian characters would be speaking English with a foreign accent for the convenience of the audience. So I absolutely love this show's choice to have huge chunks of the show's dialogue delivered in Mongolian, including lines by the Japanese main characters, and to simply subtitle it in Japanese. No handwaving about how the main characters' foreign contacts just happen to speak Japanese with no expectation that the main characters might also speak Mongolian. No, instead, all the main characters speak Mongolian and English (and Arabic maybe, in Nogi's case?) in addition to Japanese, none of the Americans speak Japanese, only the Balkan/Mongolian characters for whom it makes sense that they would speak Japanese speak Japanese, and the language of the scene is chosen based on what language would most likely be used in that situation in real life. Convenience for the audience is simply not a consideration. And I love it!
#Vivant#original#P.S. Do not watch this show if you can't speak at least some Japanese. The English subtitles are machine-translated and they are IMPOSSIBLE#to understand! And they don't even translate the parts that are subtitled in Japanese so if you can't read the Japanese subtitles you'll#miss like 20% of the story! Not that my Japanese is good enough to understand every word or anything but I can at least get the gist. And#the horrible subtitles are at least able to supply some important words I otherwise wouldn't know.#Anyway. I wish Japanese dramas were more popular in the U.S. so we could get more of them available with English subtitles!#Good professional English subtitles I mean.#As it is I think it's pretty much just whatever Netflix produces in-house and whatever Viki has isn't it? And Viki seems to have their#biggest focus on Korean dramas. I mean they do have dramas from a lot of Asian countries and they have subtitles available in a lot of#languages and that they have that learning mode that lets you watch a show with native-language subtitles with a built-in dictionary which#is awesome. But I am not at this point in my life interested in dramas that don't come from China or Japan so I wish it was easier to watch#Japanese TV in America!
