making a text-based adventure game is hard

I've realized that maybe the RPG that I was working on was a little ambitious for what resources I had.

For such limited time (and patience), I've realized that maybe I'll need to postpone any work on a game of such caliber for a bit...

Fortunately, I've found myself enjoying a new genre of games as of late--visual novels and other narrative-heavy games.

"Oh god," you yelp. "My *absolutely-favoritest* blogger has fallen to the clutches of lust!"

Not to worry, my friends. I'm not playing *that* type of visual novel.

I'm talking about Disco Elysium and Kyle is Famous and Night in the Woods.

And I'm also really digging the aesthetic of the Windows PowerShell window I have to use to install Python packages.

"I've got big things planned for this game,"

the foolish never-would-be game dev announced.

"This game will change the industry--it'll change the way the common man sees video games,"

the developer self-awarely pretentiously claimed. They might be a little crazy, but they still knew that changes as big as those wouldn't happen as a result of their little game.

But then I come back down to reality.

Changes as big as those don't *have* to happen as a result of my game.

In fact, I could make this game just for myself.

Nobody else would ever have to play it.

But then I'd miss out on all the fun of sharing my works with the world.

I'd miss out on the "what were you thinking here" shared laughs moments,

I'd miss out on the "only someone on drugs would write something like this" compliments,

I'd miss out on all of it.

And also making a game of this sort of nature kind of implies I'll be able to get my mom to play *a* video game.

Did you know that making a text-based visual novel adventure game is somewhat difficult?

Even if you know how to do classes and object-oriented programming and such?

I've spent a good part of today literally just drawing diagrams of how inheritance of locations is going to work in this game.

Dude. You have to start down at the *text* level and work your way up.

And I'm sure my methods aren't exactly the best. Yet.

I'm fully prepared to have to scrap it all in favor of a more efficient, cleaner organization method.

Thank you so much for this guide! I have one question for OP or anyone else who's done this successfully:

When it comes to installing the dependencies, e.g. the line: pip install tumblr-backup[video] ...my command line doesn't seem to like the square brackets. (At least, I'm assuming they're the problem here.)

When I try to enter that command, I get this error: zsh: no matches found: tumblr-backup[video]

Has anybody else had a similar experience? Am I doing something wrong? Are you not actually supposed to type the square brackets verbatim?

FWIW I'm doing this on macOS, not Linux, but all the commands look familiar so I think it ought to work if I can get over this one hurdle...

ETA: I know square brackets on the command line indicate something optional, but in that case, what do I actually type? Neither "pip install tumblr-backup video", with a space, nor "pip install tumblr-backupvideo", without a space, seem to work.

So far I have backed up two blogs using the following:

There have been two issues I had to deal with so far:

one of the blogs was getting a "Non-OK API repsonse: HTTP 401 Unauthorized". It further stated that "This is a dashboard-only blog, so you probably don't have the right cookies. Try --cookiefile." I resolved the issue by a) setting the "Hide from people without an account" to off and b) enabling a custom theme. I think only step a) was actually necessary though.

"Newly registered consumers are rate limited to 1,000 requests per hour, and 5,000 requests per day. If your application requires more requests for either of these periods, please use the 'Request rate limit removal' link on an app above." Depending on how big your blog is, you may need to break up the download. I suspect using the "-n COUNT" or "--count COUNT" to save only COUNT posts at a time, combined with the "--incremental" will allow you to space things out. You would have to perform multiple passes though. I will have to play with that, so I'll report back my findings.

Story from today. There is a local engineer that is a python breeder on the side.

Reticulated pythons are the longest snakes in the world. They are massive snakes. They get to be like 25 ft long and thicker than a human thigh.

Anyway, a while back he gave me a 10 ft male.

This was a wild snake that he had imported from Indonesia and was trying to breed it to one of his females.

Breeders do this sometimes because animals in captivity tend to become inbred, so once in a while some breeders will hire someone in a foreign country to go out to the forest and catch a wild animal and then put it in a box and ship it to the United states.

That way it introduces fresh genes into the gene pool. bonus money if it has any special patterns or coloration.

Anyway he got the young male shipped in and put it together with one of the females and instead of having babies the female killed it.

So he gave it to me and I've had it in the freezer.

I pulled it out last night to thaw.

Males and females snakes need to be prepped and processed differently. The anatomy of male snakes requires special equipment.

So the day before I got all the equipment ready. I got up early, started work, cutting into the tail section.

It doesn't look normal on the inside.

I'm not seeing the structures that I'm supposed to see in male snakes.

I'm very confused..... does it have some sort of condition where it didn't develop correctly?

Maybe it's too young? It's 10 ft long. I don't think it's too young.

Could it be intersex? That's super rare but I've seen it a few times.

It's a FEMALE

So it turns out that this breeder had gotten someone on the other side of the world to catch and ship this snake to him for thousands of dollars and all this time it was a female.

And then he put this smaller female in with a much larger older female and she killed it.

Through the dozens of people who have handled the snake and imported it and worked with it, everybody has completely missed the fact that its been mistakenly sexed

90 GENETICIZED SKINTONES + DEFAULTS

First of all, Happy holidays!

This is my second post, and the whole purpose of this Tumblr account is for me to share Sims 2 content that I personally use.

Now, for my game, my favorite skintone set is by oepu, which were defaulted by Sadisticpyro, both on modthesims.

I love this skin because it's not too cartoonish and also not too realistic/shiny. I like that it too has two-toned lips, and has the same lip color as mine. It also goes well with the proportions of how I make my sims.

Anyways, I don't like the skintone shades of any default skintone replacements out there because generally, they make skintone 1 and 2 look the same, and skintone 3 wayy lighter, so I created my own variation and modified the oepu skin: - I made skintone 1 lighter, skintone 3 darker and more saturated, and skintone 4 more saturated and less contrasted. - I made the male and female sims have the same skin so that they don't look too drastic from one another. - I also lightened the nose and browridge shadows so that the skin is compatible on monolids and non-prominent noses.

Afterwards, I used python to turn the 4 skintones into 10 skintones first, each skintone number has these genetic values (using Wardrobe Wrangler):

1 - 0.1 2 - 0.15 [default skintone 1] 3 - 0.2 4 - 0.3 [default skintone 2] 5 - 0.4 6 - 0.5 [default skintone 3] 7 - 0.6 8 - 0.7 [default skintone 4] 9 - 0.8 10 - 0.9

Then, per 10 skintones, I made 3 sets of undertone variations: cool, neutral and warm. So now you have 30 skintones. I thought the first set of 30 was too saturated, so I made the "Natural" versions of them. Then I also decided to make them even more desatured, these are the "Pale" versions. So overall, 90 skintones.

Because I used python, some skins are pixelated, but I really don't mind it. Also, the teeth for some is yellowish but there's some cc teeth overlays you can find online.

Everybody has memories of the first truly weird shit they engaged with as a young person and I am trying to remember back that far and I don't know if I can think of anything remotely like Skibidi Toilet. Mid-90s internet didn't have much to offer at the time.

It could be partially because my ECT caused a lot of memory gaps. But I did have an active imagination and probably had a lot of weird thoughts and stories in my head without the need of external influences.

I think the best I can come up with was watching Monty Python around 14 or 15. Terry Gilliam's animations were always fascinating to me. And probably about as weird and immature as Skibidi.
