Hello, tumblr! I mentioned this in my stream last night with my friend and collaborator @lakemojave, but here is the official tumblr announcement: I've started a fundraiser to pay for GAS that I can't afford on my own.
I...try my best to appear pretty unflappable on this site, because my online persona relies on that. But about two years ago I was harassed by TE/RFs and no matter how much I tried to forget or get over it, there was a comment that a 17 year old made towards my appearance the has probably been the most devastating thing I've ever felt, and ever since that insult I've grown steadily and steadily more disgusted and anxious about my appearance--specifically my hair.
As an AMAB trans person, I'm of course going to experience male-pattern baldness. Even in cisgender men, more than 75% of them experience some form of heightened anxiety and dysphoria due to hair loss or fear of it. I don't know how those numbers change when talking about trans people, but I can't imagine it's not even higher.
In the interest of full transparency at the cost of, frankly, my pride: I have reached the point in my dysphoria where I am growing to be borderline suicidal. I've struggled with suicidal ideation since I was a young teenager, but this is the first time in over a decade that I've reached a level where I am terrified what will happen when it gets worse.
And so with all that said, I've started a fundraiser on PayPal to try and raise money for my gender-affirming care. Y'all might remember me from the Great Soy Sauce Conspiracy of late December of last year, and maybe also how I stopped working on the project due to mental health reasons. I remember how kind all of you were when I was struggling with living newly on my own trying to afford food and things like convection plates, and it's my hope that I could rely on you all to help me again.
With that said, I've made the decision that if I am able to fulfill this fundraiser's cost...I'm going to pick back up The Mysterious Appearance of Miss Appleton and finally finish it once and for all...in video essay format, because that feels most appropriate to me. I think I'm going to be ready for it this time.
If you've read this far, thank you so much. If you need it, though:
TLDR: I need to get myself gender-affirming surgery because i'm getting real close to suicidal over my dysphoria. I've made a fundraiser for it. If the fundraiser is successful, I'm going to finally finish the video essay for The Mysterious Appearance Of Miss Appleton. Thank you for your time and your help.

I also have a very demanding job (corporate) that takes up all of my energy. I work out. I have a social life, etc, etc. All this means updates won’t always come in a timely fashion or even when I say so. Shit happens. I’ll try my best to be transparent and keep y’all up to date—but once again, shit happens. Please do not bombard my inbox with questions about updating a story especially if I never see you in my comments, likes or nothing. It’s cool every once in a while. I am a reader too and I get it lol. Sometimes we fiend for that update. But I am doing this for free lol so pls be patient and understanding.

rf kuang has plenty of hits and misses but people really seem uniquely determined to misread her work by railing on about her lack of self awareness over stuff that she is not only pretty obviously aware of, but is also transparently writing the entire fucking book about

Also I’ve noticed that everyone else in the RF even if they just go somewhere for 20 minutes and shake hands, they call it an engagement. That is no bigger work to me than being in meetings bringing initiatives to life. There are enough people shaking hands and cutting ribbons, we don’t need more. People just like to shit on William and Kate because they think it’s fun. Also, Charles doesn’t have little kids, sorry to break it to your anon. We see the effects of his workaholic nature on his kids today. And it’s not great. With the way people talk and talk, you’d think only William and Kate do this. But when UFONoMore released their stats last year, I was surprised how many royals worked less days than Kate. People just like to over fixate and repeat what others say but won’t follow his work or the other hardworking royals they praise.
Right. I like to think about it like this: during a 1 week tour the royals will sometimes pack in 15-25 engagements. It's an intense workload... but but that it's 15-25 DAYS of work. It's 15-25 HOURS (maybe?) of work. CLEARLY during that time they're doing other things as well - taking meetings on things related to their various foundations, duchies, financial stuff, household stuff, getting up to speed on the engagements for the tour as well as initiatives taking place outside of the tour.
They are WORKING a "regular" amount (40-hours per week) -- but they aren't doing 40-hours per week of engagements.
I like to think of engagements the same way I think of meetings on my work calendar. If I only have 3 meetings in 1 week it doesn't mean I didn't do anything else all week. I had to prep for the meetings, I had to do all of the work in between meetings that are deliverables for clients, etc. The royals have to do all of that too - especially royals who are running Foundations and Duchies and leading large initiatives.
One of the biggest royal PR problems - and my goodness there are SO many - is that they aren't transparent about what's happening when we DON'T see the royals. And the fact that sometimes they do post meetings in the Court Circular (CC) is even MORE confusing b/c then people are like "what, that's the only meeting he had all week" - no, I'm sure there more with his team, phone calls, emails, etc - but the CC meetings are usually high profile things, not day-to-day management things. But it gives people the impression that THE ONLY WORK that's being done is what's reported in the CC, and that's simply not the case.

Definitely curious about the genderflip Sandman fic 👀
SAME. as in, this is only a concept on the back burner of my brain because i haven't really worked out a satisfying answer to the central q of the thing which is: what does a gender flip DO to these characters?
because here's the thing. i think 99.9% of the time a genderswap au is unnecessary and boring. (not to mention essentialist as hell.) boys have pussies, girls have dicks, people of all genders are intersex, etc. some of us notgirls and failguys just want to vicariously experience our fave getting his clit sucked or her prostate massaged. i personally hate fics that go "but what if these [cis] dudes were [cis] GIRLS" and then proceed to strip the characters of everything that makes them compelling, that makes THEM, because at that point you might as well just flesh out your OCs and maybe interrogate your internalized misogyny and transphobia while you're at it.
anyways.
in the case of sandman, i am (transparently, obviously) curious about what happens if the Corinthian is not designed to be (read as) a man. in the comix, he very much embodies the fears and risks associated with gayness in the 90s (the AIDS epidemic, the dual violence of the closet and/or being outed, the culture around cruising, intersections of race and class with queerness in U.S. urban areas, etc). in the show that's subtly shifted to be a broader umbrella of queerness as well as a very 21st century anxiety around surveillance/public vs private that also taps into a cultural fascination with serial killers. in both cases, him reading as white, middle-aged U.S. man is a CRUCIAL part of what he signifies. he looks like (and takes advantage of being) someone with a lot of social privilege, across multiple categories. no one is going to question why he's in a fancy hotel, a conference room, a seedy bar, a suburb. OBVIOUSLY that changes if any one of these categories changes. i'm thinking about how and also what that means.
(the dreaming spinoff comix tried to do a Thing with a female Corinthian: while Coco spends a year as a real boy, a trans woman named Echo takes his place in the Dreaming. the spinoff handles Echo...really poorly. [i wrote a whole paragraph here trying to distill her arc but it's tangential to this post so suffice to say: it was Bad.] Echo is posed as this "femme fatale" type because i guess if the Corinthian is a woman, she'd also have to be sexy and alluring to the (heterosexist) male gaze. imho this was a cop-out, but then again...what about that spinoff wasn't.)
on some level i'm not sure the Corinthian could ever be anything besides the Corinthian, if that makes sense. as in, if you change anything about him, maybe then he ceases to be the Corinthian and becomes something else entirely. Dream can take different forms (and Overture has a femme!Dream) because stories can take different forms across cultures and times and species. but the Corinthian is intrinsically tied up in humanity and its biomythic nature. and what we think of as Human, as Sylvia Wynter reminds us, is very much tied up in narratives around identity including race, gender, and class.
at the same time my id absolutely wants a butch lesbian Corinthian who uses he/him pronouns. mostly because lesbian and wlw sex STILL gets dismissed or sanitized or erased or pathologized, even though queer women remain subject to state, police, and domestic violence at higher rates than their straight and/or cis counterparts. (also yes i'm counting my trans hermanas y primas, t*rfs can fuck right off.) but also because i'm a fagdyke with religious trauma who relates very hard to god's failed masterpiece.
#ask box#genderflip au#violetoftheendless#like i am also 100% here for a corinthian who was not created as a man but who makes himself#i'm here for a coco who has gender questions#CLEARLY the endless aren't thinking of gender from a binary pov so dream's creations aren't necessarily either#but like. coming to terms with what gender and sexuality mean TO YOU as a person who isn't supposed to be a person...#themes i am interested in!#um. mutuals feel free to ask me to tag this for any cw or tw as needed.#this is me word-vomiting while i'm jittery on too much caffeine and not enough food so like.#sandman#the corinthian

by the way, for folks who don't already know this, there's a browser extension for firefox/chrome that flags transphobic/trans-friendly sources
there isn't ios support but there's a way to use it on android. it's really useful because--if there's been a verified report--it can flag seemingly innocuous posts and re-contextualize them (years and years ago there was a popular post about moana re: women helping women heal, but knowing that OP was a te/rf... yeah.)
there have been some critiques and criticisms. some of them are pretty blatant transphobic smear campaigns, but there are reasonable critiques--one that I'd recommend looking at is this one, since it raises concerns about transparency and what's being counted as trans-friendly and why (e.g. politicians, gimmick accounts)
I think it's pretty useful for tumblr; I generally follow up and search 'trans' on people's blogs if they're flagged just in case there's been positive growth (or in case a false report might've slipped in) but so far it's been reliable. plus, te/rfs are a pretty insular community, so going to block one blog usually gives me the chance to block/flag a bunch of other transphobic blogs.
#my ramblings#I feel like this is a really well known resource but I figured I'd post abt it for anyone who didn't know#I'm also adding the slashes between te/rf just so I don't show up in search lol

Does any sinner know more about Tom Quinn? by u/Nervous-Spinach2046
Does any sinner know more about Tom Quinn? Tom Quinn is the new Scooobie, that much we know. But what makes a 68-year-old published author so desperate for money that he would willingly blow up his reputation and shill for TOW and the ginger whinger? Is he a sugar all along?I’ve never heard of him before. After a bit of googling, and here’s what I’ve found:He’s published six books on the BRF, and one is in the pipeline:Backstairs Billy (2015) – about the Queen Mum’s most trusted pageMrs Keppel (2016) – about King Edward VII’s mistress Alice Keppel, who is also Queen Camilla’s great grandmotherThe Reluctant Billionaire (2018) - about Gerald Grosvenor, Sixth Duke of Westminster (father of the current duke, Hugh)Kensington Palace: An Intimate Memoir from Queen Mary to Meghan Markle (2020)Scandals of the Royal Palaces: An Intimate Memoir of Royals Behaving Badly (2021)Gilded Youth: An Intimate History of Growing Up in the Royal Family (2023)Upcoming: Yes Ma'am: Upstairs Downstairs in the British Royal Family (August 2024)He is very prolific, and writes a lot about behind-the-scenes of the RF. I must say, if he weren’t such a sugar now, I would very much like to read some of his books, especially 1, 6, 7.From a bio I found on him on publisher Hachette’s website, he has spent 20 years talking to people in domestic service to learn about their lives. He’s also written a few bios of people who worked as servants. This is very interesting to me.Before he started writing about the RF, he’s written about a wide range of topics:fishing, eccentrics, long walks, railways, early aviation and the First World War, as well as the children’s author and illustrator Denys Watkins-Pitchford (better known as BB).(Source) He was the author of the “Strangest” series of books, and the editor of two magazines: The Countryman and Country Landowner’s Magazine. He also regularly appeared on British TV to talk about eccentrics, London history, and the RF.He had a blog, which only has three entries, all from 2021. From one of the entries we can see he has at least one son, who was studying to become a lawyer. What gives an inkling of his Markle sympathies is the cover of the Kensington Palace book: the most famous inhabitant of KP in the 20th century was undoubtedly Diana, Princess of Wales; the most famous in the century before that, was Queen Victoria before she came to the throne. Her mother has even named the set of rules governing Victoria’s upbringing The Kensington System. For the 21st century, I would say it would be William and Catherine, the current PPOW. But Quinn had this on the cover of his KP book:https://ift.tt/Slhq8y1 lived in Nott Cott in the KP grounds for, what, 5 minutes? Complaining the whole time, about the size, low ceiling, the name etc, of a piece of prime real estate in Central London? For free? (I assume H’s rent was paid by Charles). Not at all representative of such an illustrious palace. And then his last book, Gilded Youth, has this cover:https://ift.tt/VBAfq7J? Why not use either of these?Getty ImagesGetty ImagesI think it must be his solid background that made him a prime choice for the new UK PR “guru” to hire as the new Scooobie. Seemed less biased. But the shilling is so transparent. It’s rather sad to see him become a mouthpiece for the Harkles, although the bias was already there.Does anyone know more about him? post link: https://ift.tt/ZEbRmid author: Nervous-Spinach2046 submitted: May 30, 2024 at 12:38PM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit disclaimer: all views + opinions expressed by the author of this post, as well as any comments and reblogs, are solely the author's own; they do not necessarily reflect the views of the administrator of this Tumblr blog. If Kate wants to recover in privacy it is her right, but hoo boy is Team Wales once again giving a masterclass in how not to handle something. I truly think they don’t understand how much press and PR have changed in the last 10 years and did not expect people to have this reaction. Hopefully this is just a poorly handled press campaign and not an indication of something more serious.
This. ^^ I've spent many years in communications leadership roles, and transparency is key, 100% of the time. And it's easy to achieve.
The way William and Catherine's camp has handled things is just so crazy. What did they think would happen? Yes, she's entitled to her privacy — but what are the parameters? Why tell the public enough to make them curious, then shut everything down?
An example of the way this could have been communicated:
"Catherine, Princess of Wales, will undergo surgery this week for a benign digestive issue. Her prognosis is excellent. On the advice of her physicians, she will be resting and working on her recovery at home for the next several weeks, and regular updates will not be forthcoming. The Princess is expected to resume working in April."
Easy-peasy, direct, and non-invasive.
Another example: "William, Prince of Wales, is saddened that he will not be able to represent his father, the King, at funeral services for King Constantine II of Greece. The Prince has been diagnosed with a mild case of influenza A and does not wish to expose others to his illness. He is expected to recover fully within days, and he has reached out to the family to express his regret."
There is nothing difficult about this. The King's PR folks seem to be a little better at at it, but it would have made sense, IMO, to be more forthcoming about type and treatment. Perhaps they still will.
(Edited to add: No, we don't NEED to know this. And I wish the whole family the best. But if the goal is to stop speculation and chatter and to control the narrative, the more transparency, the better.)
You have to divide what is owed versus what is sensible.
She doesn't owe anyone her medical history. If she chooses not to disclose it, that's her right.
If she chooses not to disclose it, people are going to speculate and that is entirely out of her control.
If people are speculating and then her husband has a series of embarrassing gaffes while she is recovering, that is going to amplify speculation.
If all of that happens, and the royal rota has no stories to publish, and the Monarch is sick, and the heir looks incapable of doing the Monarchs job, and there are no other young interesting royals to take up space in the media, and you have no strategy for dealing with the reality of public relations in 2024, then you have...
This.
On the whole, I think it would have been better to just clarify what it was, without excruciating detail. But she absolutely is not required to do so. It's just her choice - mixed with other circumstances- has led to a shit show for the BRF.
Yes! So well-said. If you don’t control the message, someone else will try to control it for you. IMO, it speaks to a lack of experience on their team. Someone should have advised them differently.
William has always hated the press so much that he won't hire real PR and media teams. He's stubborn. He hires people he decides he likes and trusts, even if they aren't fit for the job. It's understandable, but it's also a complete disaster.
She owes no one anything, but if they want the chatter to stop, her handlers can offer more information. If the noise doesn't bother them, they can keep doing what they're doing. As the saying goes, nature abhors a vacuum; if you leave an open space, someone will come in and fill it (in this case, with their own information).
The RF has a right to privacy. That said, they can’t cry foul about speculation if they choose not to divulge what’s happening.
Exhibit A: Charles. Even though we don’t know what kind of cancer he’s been diagnosed with or the kind of treatment he’s receiving, he’s been transparent from the get-go about his surgery and his subsequent illness. I get that we’re working with a different situation here because he’s the monarch, but we’re seeing him out and about. He’s working a bit. He said people’s cards and well-wishes are making him cry. He’s barely put a foot wrong with this whole thing. Kudos to whoever is spearheading his PR.
Exhibit B: Catherine and William. “Abdominal surgery” announcement is made. William takes some time off to help. All good. But then, Catherine – one of the world’s biggest draws from a PR perspective – seems to have disappeared. The same woman who was on the hospital steps with a blowout hours after having a baby is just ... gone, and William mysteriously pulls out of King Constantine’s funeral, and people speculate, and their reps put out a pissy response. (And no, I'm not a conspiracy theorist. It's pretty clear she's home and recovering, and all will likely be well.)
Yes, yes. I know the initial announcement said she’d be gone until after Easter. But if William and Catherine are bothered by the speculation, they would do well to issue a genuine statement, not a crabby one from a comms team that can’t do its job.
Like it or not, the RF is more reliant than most celebrities on public approval. William and Catherine are doing themselves no favors. If they don't care about the chatter, though, they're obviously free to carry on.
100% agree with you. Even though, initially I had no problem with their vagueness as it seemed they were following the late Queen playbook. But, she had her children working and representing her and quashing any death rumors to journalists in public appearances. If William isn't going to work might as well tell everyone what she has and say she will be on leave for the rest of the year as it seems to me something serious.
Yes! I mean, I have no skin in the game here. I’m American. But I think there needs to be some accountability on William’s part. If he’s not going to work because he’s helping out at home, great — all the more power to him. But it’s not a good look for the future king to essentially say, “I’m on what amounts to an extended leave of absence, but I owe you nothing in the way of explanation, so piss off.”

so many t*rfs on here have clearly never actually met a trans woman in their lives it’s so transparent. not that meeting a trans woman you personally dislike gives you free reign to be a t*rf but it’s like. you are literally so scared of and angry at a theoretical boogeyman. you are scared of monsters under your bed and then claim to be gaslit when mom says there’s no monsters under your bed

Understanding Smart Water Metering

Water is one of the most valuable resources on the planet, yet millions of litres are lost every day due to leaks, inefficient usage, and outdated monitoring systems. With the growing demand for sustainable and smart infrastructure, smart water metering has emerged as a game-changing solution for utilities, businesses, and households alike.
In this blog, we’ll explore what smart water metering is, how it works, its key benefits, and why it's essential for modern water management strategies.
What is Smart Water Metering?
Smart water metering involves the use of advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) to collect real-time data on water consumption. Unlike traditional water meters that require manual readings, smart meters automatically transmit usage data to utility companies via wireless communication systems such as cellular, radio frequency (RF), or Internet of Things (IoT) networks.
These systems provide accurate and up-to-date information about water flow, pressure, leaks, and usage patterns, allowing both providers and consumers to monitor and manage water consumption more efficiently.
How Does Smart Water Metering Work?
Smart water meters are equipped with digital sensors and communication modules. Here's a breakdown of how they function:
Data Collection: The meter tracks water consumption in real time, capturing detailed usage metrics by the minute or hour.
Data Transmission: Using secure wireless networks, the meter sends this data to a centralised system or cloud-based platform.
Data Analysis: Utilities and users can analyse consumption trends, detect anomalies, and gain actionable insights.
Alerts and Reporting: The system can send alerts for leaks, excessive usage, or irregularities directly to consumers and service providers.
This automated process eliminates the need for manual readings, reduces human error, and supports proactive water conservation efforts.
Benefits of Smart Water Metering
1. Accurate Billing
One of the primary advantages of smart water metering is the elimination of estimated billing. Consumers are billed based on actual usage, fostering trust and transparency.
2. Leak Detection and Prevention
Smart meters can detect leaks quickly, even small ones that would otherwise go unnoticed. Early detection helps prevent water damage and reduces unnecessary costs for both users and utility companies.
3. Real-Time Monitoring
Real-time data allows users to adjust their water usage habits. For instance, if a household sees a spike in usage, they can investigate immediately rather than wait for the monthly bill.
4. Improved Resource Management
Utilities benefit from better forecasting and resource allocation. Smart water metering enables demand-driven supply, helping manage water stress during droughts or high-demand periods.
5. Environmental Sustainability
By promoting water conservation and reducing waste, smart metering supports sustainability goals and helps cities meet environmental regulations.
6. Remote Accessibility
Smart metering systems can be accessed via web portals or mobile apps, offering convenience to users and reducing the need for on-site visits.
Smart Water Metering for Homes and Businesses
Whether you’re managing a residential property, commercial building, or industrial site, smart water metering delivers measurable advantages.
Residential: Homeowners can track consumption and identify inefficient appliances or habits. Some systems allow integration with home automation platforms.
Commercial: Businesses can pinpoint high-usage areas, reduce operational costs, and demonstrate their commitment to sustainability.
Municipal: Councils and utility providers can monitor entire water networks, identify system losses, and streamline maintenance schedules.
Overcoming Implementation Challenges
While the benefits of smart water metering are clear, there are some challenges to consider:
Initial Costs: Upfront investment can be significant, but long-term savings often outweigh the initial expense.
Data Privacy: As with any IoT system, ensuring secure data transmission is vital to protect consumer information.
Infrastructure Readiness: Older plumbing systems may need upgrades to accommodate smart technology.
Fortunately, advancements in technology and increased government support for sustainable infrastructure are helping address these barriers.
The Future of Water Management
With climate change, population growth, and urbanisation putting pressure on global water resources, smart water metering is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity. By enabling precise monitoring, automated reporting, and sustainable usage, smart meters are transforming the way we manage water.
Adoption is growing rapidly across Australia, Europe, and North America, and it’s expected that smart water solutions will soon become standard in both new developments and existing infrastructure.

Final Thoughts
If you're looking to enhance water efficiency, lower costs, and contribute to environmental conservation, investing in smart water metering is a forward-thinking solution. Whether for residential, commercial, or municipal use, smart meters offer real-time control, actionable insights, and long-term benefits for all stakeholders.
