What is your Rebecca's Crazy Sides AU?
I don't want to reveal too much lore as I plan to make it a show or something one day but basically in the first act Logic and Creativity call Morality out on their bullshit cuz Morality is manipulative (stolen from unsympathetic!patton lol), Rebecca learns that the other sides aren't that bad, and Morality tries to be a better side. in arc 2 Rebecca learns how to calm their anxiety, while Anxiety learns to not be so protective all the time. in arc 3 depression appears and tries to take out all the sides but Morality and Logic work together to take down depression and with all the sides they imprison depression.
the sides personalities:
Logic: a emo that is very edgy but barely knows anything and has beef with Morality cuz of past trauma.
Creativity: is kinda like Patton personality wise but is more like a younger sibling than a parental figure, and has a great relationship with their sibling Intrusive Thoughts.
Intrusive Thoughts: is very chaotic but deeply cares for everyone, especially Creativity, but also has a "don't give a shit" attitude for most other things.
Morality: is the boss of everyone but is kinda very manipulative and negatively criticizes Rebecca too much to where Rebecca has a lot of self doubt, has beef with Logic.
Anxiety: is a bit skittish and deeply cares for Rebecca's well being, to the point they over think everything that Rebecca does wrong, is also the parental figure of the sides, and has a great relationship with Creativity.
Deceit: is very sceptical about everything, believes that Rebecca should listen to all the sides instead of a selected few, and is also a parental figure to the sides, has a great relationship with Logic and Intrusive Thoughts
a little bit more lore:
Logic was at first an accepted side but turned into a other side bcuz of Morality.
Anxiety basically adopted Creativity as their own cuz Creativity was all they had besides Morality and Anxiety felt the need to take care of something that wasn't Rebecca.
Intrusive Thoughts is kinda like a bimbo cuz my intrusive thoughts are more sexual than creepy so therefore the side that represents intrusive thoughts should too
this is what everyone looks like, from left to right: Rebecca, Anxiety, Deceit, Logic, Creativity, Intrusive Thoughts, and Morality

sorry it took me forever to answer, I had to collect my thoughts first lol

I’ve recently noticed (as in I only noticed recently, not it only happened recently) a distinct lack of it in your content so I thought I’d ask: opinion on EziDesAltCon? (I never know which order it’s supposed to be) cause to me it just seems like the obvious conclusion.
I honestly don’t know if there’s an ‘official’ shipping name for it. I usually go for AltDesEziCon, in the order of their games XD
I like it. Honestly, I’m all in for them being in a polycule or if this is primarily a Desmond harem XD
I cannot remember if I have ever answered something like this but there was this Desmond harem in a Royal ‘Family’ AU idea last year so I’ll focus on a poly kind of situation for this one.
Have some unorganized notes!
They all fall in love with Desmond first and it starts of as them being rivals for Desmond’s affection.
Altaïr and Ezio are highly competitive and tries to one man each other. Ratonhnhaké:ton is more of a chill dude but turns out to just be as competitive. He’s just more sly about it. There have been many Altaïr versus Ezio competitions that ended with Ratonhnhaké:ton’s stealth wins and it was all planned.
Desmond loves them all and realize that Altaïr and Ezio’s competitiveness is kinda like their foreplay.
He gets the idea of making them fall in love with one another so they can all be together (and Desmond doesn’t have to make a choice)
Shaun thought he was mad, Rebecca was more on the side of “It’s crazy enough to work”, Clay is there to watch the chaos unfold.
The Auditore family has an ongoing joke of disowning Ezio and adopting the others if he breaks up with any or all of them (not that it would happen)
Everyone but Ratonhnhaké:ton call Haytham ‘father-in-law’ to fuck with him. One time, Ezio calls him ‘father-in-law’ during a party with a lot of rich people and that’s how people learn that Haytham’s ‘unknown’ son is dating 3 dudes all at the same time.
They all call William Miles ‘Bill’ though.
This is full on modern day now apparently so Desmond’s parents are divorced and his mom married Minerva. Ezio and Ratonhnhaké:ton call Minerva stepmother-in-law while Desmond and Altaïr call her ‘Minerva’. Minerva just rolls with it and calls Desmond’s beaus “my stepson’s harem.” (this is honestly inspired by what @thedragonqueen1998 and I talked about in the comments of EOA XD)
They all live in a big apartment and have the biggest bed their friends have ever seen. They have a schedule on who does what chore each week. Altaïr is rarely given kitchen duties because he will season the ingredients and put it all in the oven. It’s not bad but Ezio keeps teasing him about his lack of variety. Ezio is forbidden to do groceries unsupervised because one time he bought more than they needed because things were ‘on sale’.
Altaïr’s grandfather doesn’t mind the number of lovers he has or that they’re men. He’s still annoying Altaïr to give him great grandchildren before he dies though.
Kids are not off the table but they want to spend time with each other first. (They all agree the oldest must be Desmond’s XD)
Malik is worried that Kadar would think that he could be invited into the poly. Kadar is honestly just living vicariously through Desmond at this point. He and Rebecca are the only two people Desmond confesses all the kinky shit they get into.
Leonardo knows the kinky shit they get into courtesy of Ezio.
Ratonhnhaké:ton doesn’t tell anyone the kinky shit they get into but Rebecca sometimes ask him for clarification because she knows he won’t embellish anything. (“Even the skydiving thing?” “Altaïr had to research a lot about that one”)
They sometimes go on doubledates and switch partners in different points of the day.
They have movie night every Sunday and the one who picks the movie is Desmond → Altaïr → Ezio → Ratonhnhaké:ton. Sometimes, movie night is in the comforts of their home, other times it’s in the movie theatres.
They schedule their offs so all of them can be together. Ezio is the one who mostly suggests they go somewhere which the others don’t mind.
Desmond always sleep in the middle of the bed, surrounded by the men he loves.

@sighonaraa you opened the door on this so here we go:
PACIFIC RIM AU
Ted and Beard? Hella drift compatible. Shouldn't even need to be said. Since becoming a dad, Ted has struggled to justify his job as a trainer for the Pan Pacific Defense Corp, but damnit someone has to care about these pilots. Someone's gotta train them to make it out alive. So many of them die young.
He wonders sometimes if its selfish of him that he's not a pilot himself, but there's no hiding that sort of thinking in the drift. The Beard he knows in the drift is the gentlest man in the world, and he always, always, talks Ted down from doing anything stupid.
Rebecca is what happens when the drift goes sour. Rupert used what he learned to dig his claws in further. Rebecca was never a pilot, but Rupert's money helped built all of this. Even though she left him, even though he's halfway across the Pacific and she's the one left running everything, his voice remains in her head like a ghost. It's only by having people like Keeley and Ted at her side that she's begun to think 'maybe I'll try again some day. maybe.'
The tragedy of Roy Kent is that he didn't die young. Recruits have been calling him an old man since he turned thirty. He's almost forty. He's outlived all the recruits who first called him old. At this point he's become so overbearing, so controlling in a drift, that he's almost impossible to find a partner for.
Everyone is bewildered when one of the new recruits, some hot-headed mollusk they pried out of Manchester of all places, takes the general compatibility test and his scores come back. They check and they check again, and then they reluctantly call in Roy Kent.
Roy dislikes him instantly. He's too cocky and he doesn't take the risks seriously. They have one sparring session. Roy curses the sixth sense years of piloting have given him. They're drift compatible. Offensively so. Why won't the world give him a break?
Their first and only test drift is an unmitigated disaster. They nearly destroy one of the last functioning Jaegers; repairs will take months. Both of them walk away from the experience scraped raw and haunted by the knowledge they'll have to carry about each other for the rest of their lives.
Meanwhile Colin and Isaac are two guys from different departments who happened to meet in the lift one day. They ended up at the cafeteria talking for hours about everything and nothing, and the next day they got tested on a lark, even though neither was in the training program. Scores came back off the chart, they are now in the training program. It's terrifying. They wouldn't trade it for the world.
Richard and Jan Maas are barely drift compatible and shouldn't be let anywhere near a giant robot but somehow they keep winning so-
Keeley is the cutie on the bridge who gets to wear the bright colorful suspenders and run the clock.
Moe is one of those crazy scientists, but I couldn't decide which one so he might be both idk
Actually I've decided that Trent Crimm is Newton. He's not a scientist per se but he is a researcher and has fantastic style and rock t-shirts.
Oh and there's a sweet moment in here where Dani offers to drift with Jamie even though they basically just met and it is beautiful and healing. Dani is one of the most all-around drift compatible people around, but he really loves his amigo Jamie.
Sam is also a pilot in training and everyone in the world is like 'please no don't let the kaiju kill him or truly there is there no god in this world'

The Fall of Raccoon City- Chapter Two (Leon Kennedy x Reader AU)
(Y/n) is getting whiplash from her Captain, and Leon begins his first real day on the job.
♦♣♥♠
(Y/n) was now on day two of her ongoing headache, though the hangover was probably more at fault than her stress. Or maybe the fact that she couldn’t remember the last time she had just a plain glass of water? Meh, she could live off of coffee and beer, right?
As she walks in through the front door of the RPD, her day is significantly brightened by the sight of her favorite person’s face. She quickly makes her way to Rebecca, hoping to get to talk with her before they inevitably have to start working again. As she approached her best friend, (Y/n) realizes the poor girl has bags under her eyes, and she looks like she can barely stand.
“Good morning, starshine.” (Y/n) laughed humorlessly. “You look even worse than I feel. What happened to catching up on sleep?”
“It didn’t happen.” Rebecca fights back a yawn, and (Y/n) huffs.
“That’s apparent. Did something happen last night?”
“No, I just got caught up in my own work again.”
“Is Wesker getting on you too?”
“No,” She shook her head. "I chose to put this much effort in myself. Now I have to suffer the consequences."
Rebecca sighed as she lifted her coffee mug to her lips, and (Y/n) frowned.
"You have to be crazy to actively decide to work yourself this hard."
"Well," the shorter girl's voice dropped to a whisper as she glanced to the side. "I have good reason to be working this hard. We need to have a private talk sometime."
"Oh, ok." (Y/n) tried to ease the sudden flare of anxiety rising in her stomach.
"Speaking of Wesker," and just like that the subject changed. "He has been acting very odd recently."
"He isn't like that all the time?"
"No, just since Irons' arrest. And only towards you."
"Well, I'll try not to take it personally."
"Do you think we could grab lunch together today?"
“Oh,” She winces. “I have to go speak to the prosecutor today. Do you think we could do it tomorrow?”
Rebecca’s face brightens. “Yeah, tomorrow would work in our favor. The sooner the better, though. We really can't push this off much longer.”
“I’m sensing it’s something urgent.” (Y/n) mutters, fixing her best friend with a look that read
‘Just what are you hiding?’
“Very. We can explain over lunch tomorrow.” We? “I have to go. See you later, (Y/n).”
“Bye.” She waved goodbye to Rebecca, forcing the grimace off of her face as she realized she now had no excuse to avoid her meeting with Wesker. Today was chock full of talking to people (Y/n) frankly found to be intimidating. Lawyers were tricky, and Wesker was grumpy. Neither one was ideal to her, but at least she felt certain the prosecutor wouldn’t literally bite her head off. Wesker, she wasn’t so sure.
Her footsteps felt heavy as she made her way through the west office, heading towards the stairs leading to the second floor. She takes a hopeful glance at Leon’s desk as she passes but it looks relatively untouched. That isn’t out of the ordinary, considering he only started here yesterday. After a month it’ll look more like his own personal space. What she’s really disappointed in is the fact that he isn’t sitting there when she walks by. Oh, well. Maybe she’ll bump into him later.
As she makes her way up the stairs and around the hall to the S.T.A.R.S. office, she feels a shiver run down her spine. The bustling noises of people moving throughout the building brings her no comfort as she is reminded of the last time she had to go sit in the chief’s office. It didn’t matter that his office was on the opposite side of the station, or that he was long gone from this place and Celia was going to see Wesker instead. She still felt that same haunting chill that she had experienced then.
That chill only got worse as she sat on the visiting side of Albert Wesker’s desk, trying to avoid the sight of her own reflection in those ever-present glasses of his. She briefly wondered what the color of his eyes were, before coming to the conclusion she’d really rather not know.
“So, are we here to discuss the trial of Brain Irons again, sir?” (Y/n) asked politely, sitting stiff and rigid as she tried not to outwardly shake like a leaf. Despite the fact that Wesker was as cool as a cucumber, she couldn’t help but see visions of her meeting with Irons just before his arrest. “I’ve overlooked every file and report like you’ve asked me to. I feel confident I can deliver a testimony that will satisfy both you and the court.”
He was collected, yes, but he was not calm. Irons had been a raging storm, anger barely contained as he sat at his desk with his hands folded in front of her face. He was hiding a sneer, spitting hateful words in cutting tones at her before reaching into his desk and pulling out a shining metal gun-
(Y/n) is torn from her vision as Wesker sets the papers he pulled from his desk in front of her.
Right. This isn’t… that…
She glances at the papers before looking up at the captain. “A new S.T.A.R.S. assignment?”
“Yes.” Wesker leaned back in his chair. “I’m afraid Chief Branagh and I have had to pull some strings. You won’t be attending the trial after all-”
“Wait, you’re kidding right?” She interrupted him before she could stop herself, noticing how he grimaced. “I need to testify! He shot me for Christ's sake!”
“Believe me, we know how important your testimony will be. But they have your written reports and all of the files on the incident. I understand your frustration, but as a part of the team, your presence is required here.”
She leaned back in her own chair as well, sighing as she ran a hand through her hair. “I get that, sir. But if I can’t testify… what if Irons walks free?”
“Oh, I highly doubt he will. Even without you there in person, the evidence of your injury at his hands and all his other misdeeds is still very much on display for the jury to see. Irons will be convicted of his crimes, I’m sure of it. Now, I’m afraid this assignment takes priority here”
(Y/n) nodded softly, looking down at the desk as her stomach began to coil with the stress. She felt sick, terrified of leaving an even worse impression on the captain by disposing of her breakfast on his desk. Even though this conversation was so calm, she still looked at his face and saw the anger that came before she bit the bullet…
What was she supposed to say to him? ‘Sorry, sir, you remind me of the man that shot me and now I'm having vivid flashbacks that make me wanna vomit profusely. Don't take it too personally.’
“Okay. I’ll be meeting with the prosecution over lunch today,” She spoke softly, barely a mumble as her grip on the arms of the chair tightened. “I’ll let them know I won’t be there.”
“Good. Take these to them.” Wesker handed her another folder, this one she presumed was full of the papers needed to excuse her absence. “We’ll debrief on the mission tomorrow afternoon. Prepare yourself.”
She took that as her cue to vacate his office.
♦♠♣♥
It was late morning when Leon took a walk into the breakroom of the RPD. He had just returned from a short ride-along with officer Stevenson and was looking forward to a snack before they headed back out. Poor guy was starving, but that somehow slipped his mind as he saw (Y/n) (L/n) sitting at one of the tables with her purse in front of her. She looked up from the closed envelope that held her attention, beaming as she recognized who has walked in.
“Hey, there’s my rookie! Looks like my day’s gotten brighter.”
“So you remember last night?” Leon chuckled, referring to the little nickname she had awarded him.
“Pfft, I wasn’t that drunk, Kennedy!” She scoffed, standing to move toward the breakroom sink. She ran her cup under the water, rinsing it clean of the coffee it had held before. “You know if it bothers you, you can tell me right?”
“What? Calling me your rookie?”
“Yeah. I mean to be playful, but I don’t want to cross any lines or anything.”
“No, it’s fine.” Leon sits across from her as she retakes her seat. “Actually, I thought it was cute.”
“You said a very similar thing about the banner I made for you.” She gave a smug little half-grin. “Is this your way of admitting you think I’m cute?”
“If the shoe fits.” Leon huffs, leaning back in his seat. He hoped he looked cool and smooth, and not like the flailing ball of awkward panic that he was. (Y/n) laughed, but it wasn’t a mocking laugh like he had made a fool of himself. It was more of a pleased laugh, like she found him charming. God, he hoped she found him charming.
“You’re funny, Kennedy.” Her smile and eyes both grew soft. “I think I picked a good rookie to hold onto.”
“So,” Leon kinda shrugged, unsure of how to continue the rather flirty conversation from there. “How has work been today?”
She sighed heavily at that, a surefire sign that work was not all sunshine and rainbows for her.
“Well, all the time I’ve spent preparing for trial has gone to waste. I’m being sent on my first S.T.A.R.S. assignment soon, so I won’t be making it to the trial. We’ll have tom wait and see how that goes.”
“That’s a bummer.” Leon frowned. “You don’t sound too excited about that.”
“Sorry, I forgot I was supposed to be.” She laughed humorlessly, more to ease any tension that might have been building up than anything else. She glances at the watch sitting on her wrist, seemingly having lost track of time. “Oh, I gotta go. I’m having lunch with the prosecutor on the case.”
“Going over the last details?”
“Gotta break it to him that I can’t make the date.” (Y/n) squinted. “It feels so weird that they can just… tell me not to go. Usually, a trial takes priority over everything else.”
“This assignment must be pretty damn important then.” Leon watched as she began to ruffle through her purse. “What’s it about?”
“Dunno,” She pursed her lips. “I’ll be finding out tomorrow. Wesker seemed to think it was crucial.”
She pulled sunglasses from her bag, putting them on as she mimicked the captain’s voice.
“The assignment takes priority. Your presence is required here.”
Leon snorts, shaking his head as she lifts the glasses atop her head and smiles.
“Seriously, that guy talks like a cheesy movie villain. Kinda gives me the creeps. But I gotta go, I’ll catch ya later, rookie!”
“See ya.” Leon waves goodbye as she leaves the room, reaching for the bag of chips he had bought from the vending machine. Just as he tore the bag open, Stevenson came into the room in a hurry.
“Hey, Kennedy, we gotta move.” He panted. “Armed robbery down the road.  Rodriguez is already there but they want us to come help take care of it.”
“Shit!” Leon left his bag of chips unattended as he shot up to leave.

How much do you think charlie and rachel hang out/sleep over/visit/etc at kim and jimmy's place when they're in their teens? Does charlie spend more time there than rachel or vice versa? and how does chuck handle it?
This is a tough one because I think Chuck absolutely hates the idea, but Rebecca thinks that it's ridiculous for Chuck to feel this way and says so, which makes Chuck too embarrassed to try to enforce it. Because he knows at some level that he's being unfair. In this AU, Jimmy is practicing elder law and Kim has her own private practice, and other than Jimmy being a little colorful with his commercials, no laws are being broken. Plus, while he thinks that Kim is crazy for being in a relationship with Jimmy, he can't deny she's a responsible person. (This is also an AU where Jimmy didn't mess with the Mesa Verde files.)
Charlie is probably over there a lot to get away from his dad, which just makes his and Chuck's relationship worse. Chuck feels like everyone always chooses Jimmy over him, even his own son. He even accuses Rebecca of taking Jimmy's side over his, which is one of the many things that led to their separation

HEY! 🗣
Hi. 🙃
Hope you're gettin' yourself extra hydrated and well rested today! 😉
Anyways, I was just wondering. When are you gonna give us more art and backstory for that Becky With The Good Hair, huh? 😏
I *NEED* to know more about this cyborg beauty!! 😫
And uhh.. this may be weird of me to mention this but, even though I know it's not canon to your au, a small part of me in the back of my mind kinda ships her with AM, in like, an aloof Tsundere girl x Shy boy type of dynamic. (Can't name an example rn but hopefully you get it)
I mean,,, since the two of them are machine in some way (one more than the other) it just makes sense to me. Idk, my brain just comes up with crazy things sometimes. I just think they'd be cute. 🤷‍♀️😅
Hiiii!!!! Finally someone asks about Becky!!!
Tumblr media
Okay so Becky (short for Rebecca obviously), is a very unique case amongst the survivors. For one, she only got placed in the sanctuary 10 years after the other four, during that time BE was “working on” and “saving” her. She is very distant from the others, possibly even more than Evan, but she doesn’t try to provoke BE like he does. Generally she rather likes BE and the sanctuary as opposed to the life she had before all this. I’ll probably go deeper into her backstory in a different post, as I have short comics planned for everyone like the one I did with Tiffany. But to simplify, she spent most of her life bedridden, in and out of hospital, not helped by her own personal belief that she wouldn’t amount to anything since the doctors commonly told her that she was unlikely to make it past 23. BUT HEY! HERE SHE IS! Fixed up by BE (Although she still has POTS, cause I have POTS so she can suffer with it to)! Due to BE enhancements, and rapid evolution she underwent pretty much, she is far more athletic, intelligent, and “odd” looking than the other survivors. Most of the time she is doing physical activities, I picture her the type that gets upset if she sits still too long. She also really likes dressing up; like more than anyone else in this au. And Gloria is happy to see her new clothes, same with BE, so why would she pass up on such a lovely opportunity.
And you know what? Adds some canon fuel to your ship
Tumblr media
So even before you sent this ask, these two definitely do have a interesting dynamic. They are two sides of the same coin in a way. Becky is a human given robotic parts, whilst Autumn is a robot given human parts. And both of them do have a habit of just staring in mirrors for concerning periods of time just pondering their existence and if the body they are in is actually theirs.
Further more! I actually like shipping, I think it’s fun for everyone, so I really don’t mind you or anyone else shipping these characters as long as it’s not Naomi (for obvious reasons).
Anyhow have a good day!!!!

"So I was thinking, godparents," Bucky spoke up. He and Natasha were currently finishing setting up the baby's nursery in their new apartment.
They had found a nice two bedroom apartment in Brooklyn, much to Natasha's dismay. Bucky thought it was the perfect place to start their new little family. It was also about a 20 to 30 minutes drive to Bucky's work and University campus. His mom and stepdad had even offered to help them out financially for a bit, just as long as Bucky continued on his path to graduate with his Masters in Music Technology in the Spring.
Bucky had managed to finish his bachelor's and masters program in just the span of 4 years, a whole year earlier than originally planned. He was proud of himself, if there's one thing he hadn't screwed up yet, it was his education. He had fully devoted himself to his education the last four years and it clearly paid off. He had also managed to get a good paying job at a studio as an engineer. He had his whole future all planned out, the pregnancy might've been a curve ball at the beginning but with the help of his family and therapist, he was handling it all so well.
"Oh you don't need to worry about the godparents, I have it all figured out already," Natasha tells him as she folds baby clothes, "I picked Abigail and Dylan."
Natasha on the other hand had decided to put her education on hold. Deciding she wanted to be a stay at home mom, Bucky constantly made sure that that's what she wanted. And she insisted every time that she was "made to be a stay at home mom". So Bucky had to reluctantly allow her to make that decision.
Which was one of the reasons why his parents had offered to help out for at least the first year or two, they had known their son was already stressing about finances, and trying to respect Natasha's decision. They figured two years would be a good enough time for the couple to build up their savings.
Bucky didn't like the fact that his parents were helping out with money, but he knew him and Nat wouldn't have been able to make it just on is current income alone. At least not until after he graduated, his boss had already promised a raise once he graduated, but that wasn't until May and the baby was due in the next two weeks.  He promised to pay his parents back every cent they gave him, but they told him to just focus on being a good father.
"Abigail and Dylan?" He questioned.
"Yeah," she shrugged her shoulders.
"The same Abigail and Dylan that showed up to the baby shower high, and proceed to get drunk, because and I quote 'babies are so boring'. That Abigail and Dylan?"
"Come on James, they were just joking, plus baby showers aren't necessarily the most fun thing in the world," she rolled her eyes.
"Can we at least each choose one godparent?" He suggested, "You can have Abigail as the Godmother and I can choose The Godfather."
"Like Sam?"
"No, not Sam. Steve," Bucky tells her.
"Oh, then no," she simply said, turning her back to him to continue putting clothes away.
"What's your problem?" Bucky asks annoyed, finally having enough of her attitude, "This entire pregnancy you've been against everything I've suggested."
"Hey, you got to choose Brooklyn," she turned around pointing her finger at him.
"Yeah because I couldn't fucking afford Manhattan Natasha," he stressed, trying not to raise his voice at her, "You didn't want to know the gender of the baby? Fine. You get to name the baby? Fine. You choose the color scheme of the nursery, fine. You choose the hospital. You choose the apartment. God damn Nat, I haven't done a single thing but pay for everything."
"And I thank-you for that," she rolled her eyes.
"But you don't," he shakes his head in disbelief over her reactions, "You haven't thanked me once. I get that you're carrying our child, and I'm appreciative of that. But god damn Natasha, show me some respect. Show my family some respect!
"You didn't thank my mom, Rebecca, or Keith for everything they've done for you. For us. And I can't keep making up excuses to defend you," he raises his voice a little bit.
"If this relationship is ever going to work, you need to be respectful. You need to stop being so selfish. I get this isn't easy for you, but trust me, this isn't easy for me either. But I agreed to do this. I am stepping up. I want to be a part of my child's life. And I want us to be together and be family," he calms down, "But if you continue to act this way. I won't stay in this relationship."
"You're just going to abandon us?" Natasha asks grabbing her belly, suddenly realizing the reality of the situation.
"No, I won't abandon you both. But we won't be together," he explains, "I will always be in my child's life. I will always be there for them. I'm not going to put my child through the same thing I went through growing up. I promised myself I would never do that."
"So if that means that you and I break up, then so be it Natasha, I'll do it," he tells her, "My child will not grow up in a toxic household."
"Okay," she agrees, tears in her eyes, "I promise I will be better."
"Don't promise me Nat, just show me."
Tumblr media
Two and a half weeks later Bucky found himself rushing an in-labor Natasha to the hospital, it was a quick k10 minute drive from their apartment. He quickly called his mom as the nurses wheeled Natasha away, with Bucky following.
Bucky's mom arrives within the next 10 minutes, as the nurses begin to prep Natasha in her hospital room.
Bucky sent a quick text to Steve and Sam, letting them know it was showtime and that he'll call them once the baby is here.
"How's Mama doing?" The doctor asked while entering the room, quickly taking her spot at the foot of the bed to examine Natasha.
"It hurts," Nat cried, as Bucky tried to soothe her.
"I know, but unfortunately you were too far dilated when you arrived, that it's too late for the epidural," the doctor softly explains, "But the good news is I feel Baby's head, so it's time to go."
Natasha looked over at Bucky, completely scared.
"It's okay," he assured her, "I'm right here. Everything's going to be okay."
He leaned down an placed a soft kiss to her lips, helping her relax a bit.
"Ready?" The doctor looks up at Natasha.
"Yes," Natasha nodded, grabbing a hold of Bucky and his mom's hands on either side of her.
10 minutes later, a soft cry was heard in the room. Bucky quickly glanced over to where the doctor was had finished pulling the baby out.
"Congrats Mommy and Daddy, it's a girl," she announced.
"A girl?" Bucky whispered in awe, tears filling his eyes. He looked over at Natasha, who looked a lot paler in color.
"Nat?" He called out for her.
Her eyes fluttered shut, her limbs went limp, and all the monitors started to go crazy.
The doctor quickly cut the umbilical chord and handed the baby off to an awaiting nurse.
"What's going on?" Bucky panicky asked.
"Get them out," the doctor told a nurse, ignoring Bucky's question.
A nurse quickly escorted Bucky and his mom out of the room.
"She's going to be okay right?" He asked his mom, tears streaming down his face.
"I don't know honey," she honestly said, wrapping her arms around her son. She never thought the first hug they shared after him becoming a father would be like this.
She continued to hold him, soothing him as she made silent prayers pleading for Natasha's safety.
10 minutes later. The same 10 minutes it took for them to arrive to the hospital. The same 10 minutes it took Natasha to bring their daughter into the world, the door opened.
Bucky quickly pulled apart from his mom to see the doctor walking out of the room.
The doctor's face was filled with sorrow. Bucky's mom immediately put her head down, already knowing the outcome.
"How is she?" Bucky asked.
"Mr. Barnes, Natasha had a postpartum hemorrhage, due to issues with her placenta," the doctor carefully explains, "Unfortunately, there was too much blood loss. We weren't able to save her. She died."
Bucky immediately broke down, his mom quickly caught him. The doctor placed a reassuring hand on his back.
He quickly pulled away after a couple of minutes, "The baby. How's the baby?"
"She's good. They took her to get checked just as a safety procedure," the doctor tells him, "She's on the pediatric floor. Would you like to meet her?"
"Yeah," he says, then pauses, "What about Natasha?"
"We can come get you to say goodbye once we get her cleaned," the doctor tells him.
"Okay, thank you," he says.
The doctor takes him and his mom to the pediatric floor. The walk was silent. No one knowing what to say. Bucky was no longer crying, but he felt numb the entire short walk. The doctor knocked quietly on a door, before opening.
"Doctor Monroe, this is Mr. Barnes, the baby's father," the doctor said, before stepping aside to let Bucky in, "Mr. Barnes, I'll have someone come get you when it's time."
"Okay, thank-you," he nodded his head.
"Are you ready to meet your daughter?" Doctor Monroe asked, Bucky nodded his head.
"Meet your Daddy baby girl," the doctor said, gently handing the baby over to Bucky.
Bucky looked down at the small baby in his arms. He was instantly overcome with so many different emotions. The doctor walked out of the room, while Bucky's mom watched from outside threw the window.
"Hi baby girl," he whispered, sniffling back his tears, "You're so beautiful. I'm your dad. And boy am I lucky that you chose me to be your Dad. I always imagined this day would've turned out a lot differently. But life sure knows how to throw some real curveballs."
"Your mom would've loved you," he paused, letting it all sink in. His daughter will have to grow up without a mother. No little girl should have to be without a mom.
"I'm so sorry," he cried, as the baby was lulled to sleep, "I am so sorry your mom won't be able to physically be here. I am so sorry you'll have to grow up without her. No one should have to grow up without a parent. And trust me, I know what that's like. But lucky for us, I had the greatest pleasure of being raised by the most strongest and kindest mother. She taught me everything I know. Your grandma is the best lady you will ever meet. Lucky for us because god knows we're going to be needing her a lot.
"But you and I are incredibly fortunate that we won't ever be alone. We have so many people who care about us. You'll have all the female leadership you can ever need. We can do this," he strongly said to the sleeping baby, "You and I. We can do this. And I promise you this, that no matter what happens, you will always have me. You're stuck with me for the rest of your life. My love for you is greater than anything, anyone I've ever loved. My love for you will always be easy and unconditional. You'll never have to prove your worth to me. You're worth more to me than you can ever possibly imagine. I love you."
Bucky placed a soft kiss to his daughter's forehead. The first kiss he will ever give her, but definitely not the last.
There was a soft knock at the door, he gently called for the person to come in.
His mom quietly opened and closed the door behind her, stepping to her son's side.
"She's beautiful," she smiled down at the little baby.
"She really is," Bucky beamed. He looked over at his mom and noticed she was holding a clipboard, "What's that?"
"Birth certificate," she tells him, "One of the nurses gave it to me. They said there's no rush to fill it out. You have time."
"Here, I can do that," he said gently holding the baby out for her to take.
"Are you sure?" She asked, switching with him.
"Yeah, I have a name anyways."
"What is it?" She looked over at the name written down:
Poppy James Barnes.
[flashback]
After that talk Bucky had with Natasha, he noticed a serious change in her attitude. She was beginning to be more relaxed and more selfless. Bucky felt a tiny weight lifted off his shoulder. Hoping that these changes in her personality would stay.
"So what do you think about James for a boy?" Natasha asked one night, as she and Bucky made dinner together in their small kitchen.
"For a middle name?" He asked confused.
"No, his first name."
"Oh," he paused, "I actually have never liked the idea of giving a child their parents' name. I feel like it doesn't really give them a chance to be their own person. If their parent is successful then they feel the stress of always having to live up to that. And if their parent is crap then they're forever stuck with that reminder of that person."
"That makes sense," she agreed, understanding where he was coming from,
"Then how about James for the middle name. Whether it's a boy or girl."
"I would actually really like that," he smiled at her, "I would like that a lot."
They gathered up their own plates, and sat at their small round table.
"So what other names have you come up with?" Bucky asked her as he took a bite of his chicken.
"Truthfully, I haven't found any good names. All the girls keep making suggestions and they're way too out there," she tells him, "I don't want them to have a name that's too hard to pronounce or spell."
Natasha's phone started to ring, Bucky got up to grab it for her from the living room. By the time he handed it over to her it stopped ringing.
"What kind of flower is that?" He asked her, noticing her phone's Lock Screen background.
"The California Poppy," she tells him.
"Why do you have that as your background?"
"Well my mom was actually from California," she says, "She met my Dad when they both went to Harvard. They fell in love, so she decided to stay out here on the East Coast.
"The only clear memory I have from her was all the stories she used to tell me about poppy season. How the color just made everything so lively. Her parents would take her every season. I remember seeing all the photos of her as a child surrounded by all the flowers. We looked a like as children," she fondly smiled,
"She always talked about taking me to go see them, but she and Dad were always so busy. Then she got sick and there just wasn't a way for us to go. My grandparents tried to get some out here but it was too late. I never did get to see the poppies."
Natasha was silent for a moment, letting what she said sink in. She's never told anyone that story before, the memory would always make her sad. But now sitting here with Bucky, pregnant with their child, for the first time in her life her mother's death didn't bring her such sadness. She could smile at the memory and know she had the utmost best time with her mother, even if it was short lived, she knew her mother loved her. And she can't wait to shower that love onto the baby inside of her, once they were out.
"We should go," Bucky says, "Once the baby is here we should go when it's poppy season. Plus it'd be nice seeing Steve and Liz's life out west."
"Yeah, that sounds nice," her eyes teared up, seeing how generous this man was in front of her, "I'd really love that."
Tumblr media
"Poppy, that's cute," Winifred smiled.
"Yeah, Nat would've loved it."
"They said if you were ready, you can say your goodbyes," she carefully said.
"Okay, you're good with her?"
"Yeah. Do you want me to go with you? The nurses can watch Poppy."
"No. I'd feel much better if she was with family," he tells her, "I'll be fine mom. I can do this."
He gave her a kiss on the cheek before leaving the room.
"Take all the time you need," the nurse told Bucky, as she led him to the room Natasha's body was in.
"Thank you," he quietly said.
She opened the door for him, and he carefully stepped inside.
He walked closer to the body on the bed. He immediately started crying at the sight of her lifeless body.
"God Nat," he cried, "I am so sorry. We never even discussed the possibility of this ever happening. I never even thought of this happening. God I don't know how I am going to ever do this alone. I never imagined myself ever raising a child alone."
He takes a moment to catch his breath.
"She's beautiful Nat, so incredibly beautiful," he tells her, "I wish you would've been able to see her. Hold her. I'm going to make sure she knows everything about you. There's not going to be a day where she doesn't know about her mother."
"When poppy season arrives I'm going to make sure to take her. Every year," he wipes away a tear, "Oh, I also named her Poppy. For you. For your mom. I promise I won't let you down. She's going to have the best life ever. I'll make sure of that. Thank-you for everything you've given me. I truly did love you. Goodbye Natasha." _________________ Age: 22

The car comes to a stop, parking in a spot next to a bunch of other cars. Bucky, Liz, and Steve get out of the car. Steve and Liz grab a few things from the trunk, while Bucky gets the smiley baby out of the car seat. Bucky places the baby into the stroller, Steve had gotten out. The three of them began to walk towards the field of poppies.
"Wow, there's a lot this year," Liz says, "Do you want to take her out?"
"Yeah, I'll grab her," Bucky says grabbing Poppy.
He walked ahead of Liz and Steve, taking in the moment with his daughter.
"Look at all the poppies," he whispers to the almost eight month old. She had a huge smile on her face taking in the sight around her.
She was making some babbling sounds, as if to agree with her dad.
The weather was perfect. The sun shining down on them, it wasn't too hot or too cold. Bucky just stared at the flowers, with a peaceful feeling washing over him. The last few months haven't been the easiest, but he was making it. They both were making it. Being here, gave him the reassurance that he was doing good. He could feel Natasha's presence with him there. As if she was silently saying how proud she was of him.
"We're going to be fine," he said to Poppy, placing a kiss on her head.

What's some headcanons you have for each of the sides? Or what do you think their favorite musicals are? :)
I don't really have headcanons anymore, but I have a lot of aus based on/round sanders sides, the one I'm currently hyperfixated on is Rebecca's Crazy Sides which is the show but I'm Thomas and the sides personalities are changed to fit mine, if anyone wants to know more about then send an ask (totally not desperate to rant about it lol)
to answer your other question: what I think the sides favorite musicals would be
Virgil: Be More Chill, cuz it's about a guy who has a lot of insecurities but learns to accept himself for who he is at the end, I think Virgil would resonate with that at least a little
Logan: Dear Evan Hansen (?), I don't know a lot of musicals so my choices are limited and I probably should've researched about other musicals before choosing one for Logan but I think he'd like Dear Evan Hansen, idk why but I have a feeling he would
Patton: Mamma Mia, I feel like he'd like this one cuz it's a classic and my mom likes it so ofc Patton would too lol
Roman: Six, idk just has Roman vibes to me lol
Janus: Mean Girls or Heathers, I can't decide cuz both scream Janus to me but I think he'd prefer Mean Girls cuz I do lol
Remus: Beetlejuice, do I need to say more? lol
feel free to tell me what you guys think their favorite musicals would be if you disagree, also definitely ask me about my au I will not and cannot stop talking about it, I'm like a gremlin that needs to get the chaos out of their system, pls!

Winifred – Howlin’ For You – One Shot
Description: Y/N tries to understand Bucky’s contentious relationship with his mother, Winifred.
Pairing: AU - Biker!Bucky x Fem/Reader
Word Count: 3,700
Howlin’ For You - Masterlist
Read the series or you will not know what the fuck is happening.
Tumblr media
Y/N was reading a book on her couch.
Bucky was on the other side of the couch. He had put on a hockey game.
But she could tell he wasn’t actually paying attention. His arms were crossed tightly and there was tension in his shoulders and neck. There was a furrow in his brow, and he was to trying to make it seem like it was from concentrating on the game.
Y/N knew him better than that.
He’d been off for a couple of days now. Y/N tried to link it to something. And all she came up with was the phone call he’d had recently with his sister, Rebecca.
For a moment, she flirted with the idea of texting Rebecca herself, asking her if something happened. And Y/N knew Rebecca would tell her. They’d grown close rather quickly and were only growing closer.
But Y/N stopped herself, not wanting to make Bucky feel like she was snooping around in things he wasn’t ready to talk about.
“Buck?”
“Mhmm?” She hummed without taking his eyes off the screen.
“You OK?” The concern in her voice finally made him whip his eyes to her.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” he forced a small smile to reassure her.
She raised a brow. It said more to him than any words could. She was silently telling him that she knew he was lying, but she also wasn’t going to push him to talk about it if she didn’t want to.
Bucky just turned his attention back to the TV.
Y/N nodded, mostly to herself, and went back to reading.
Guess they weren’t talking about it.
Another half an hour went by of them silently but comfortably sitting in silence together.
Bucky finally sighed. “Doll?”
She kept her eyes on the book, “Yeah?”
“Come here,” he requested. “Please,” he added quickly. Y/N smirked at him but crawled over the couch. She decided to be cheeky and straddled his lap, facing him and putting her back to the TV.
It didn’t catch him off guard, but it still earned her a side grin from him.
His hands automatically went to her hips, pulling her closer – if that was even possible.
Now that Bucky had her close, had her in his arms, he didn’t feel brave anymore. He didn’t know how he was meant to start or what he should say.
Y/N’s finger traced over the frown on his brow, massaging it until his face finally relaxed under her touch and it disappeared.
“What’s going on in that head of yours, Bucky Barnes?” She asked him quietly, almost in a whisper.
“My ma found out about you,” he finally spit out.
Y/N tried not to show shock, maintaining a composed expression. Bucky had filled her in about his relationship with his mother.
Winnifred Barnes. A strong and independent mother, who raised two children without their father. George Barnes had passed away when Bucky was barely even four. Rebecca was still a baby. He had a rare heart disease, unusual for someone so young and healthy and happy. But death was rarely ever fair or logical.
It was almost a blessing how young Bucky and Rebecca were. Rebecca had no memories. Bucky barely had any more, many he convinced himself he’d made up.
Bucky had told Y/N how his mother was constantly disappointed in him – his choices, his mistakes, his lifestyle. She wanted what every mother wanted for their child: the very best.
Bucky and his mother didn’t see life the same way.
To be fair, Bucky was a rough teenager to handle. He was lost and angry, without a father to look up to or guide him. Winifred was just thankful he had a kind and good heart. Winifred was even more thankful for Steve, who kept her son out of trouble by getting into worse trouble himself that required Bucky to protect him. But she knew the two of them came from a place of good morals.
She struggled with knowing how to discipline him and guide him in the right direction. The two of them butted heads.
When Bucky joined the army, he thought his mother would finally see that he was making an effort, that he was cleaning himself up and growing up.
But she lost it. She threw a fit, cried her eyes out. She was convinced her son would only come home in a coffin.
Bucky had nothing to say to his mother that night. The truth was that he couldn’t bare the idea of Steve – small and fragile Steve – enlisting by himself. Bucky had to look after the punk. Plus, what the hell else was he going to do with his life?
Things got better when he finally came home for good. Winifred was just grateful that he came back with only scars and burns. It was better then him not coming back at all.
But then Bucky started turning into some kind of local vigilante. His friends started getting called a biker gang, when they had originally just been a family who rode motorcycles. News traveled fast and Winifred was no fool. She heard the stories about bikers helping people in need, going above the law, and not being afraid to use force and violence if necessary. And it didn’t take her long to put together that her son was behind all of it.
She didn’t approve.
Things reached a new low when Bucky went to jail.
Even when Rebecca explained to her mother that Bucky was helping the Feds, that he was playing a part as an informant, Winifred didn’t care. Because she knew the Feds wouldn’t have picked her son if they didn’t have something on him too. They also wouldn’t have picked him if he didn’t play the part so well. No mother wants to realize that their son fits into prison nicely.
One time, Y/N finally had the courage to ask Rebecca for her side of things. She had smiled sadly. But it was clear she loved both of the people that were brought up. “At the end of the day, Bucky is a momma’s boy through and through. He just thinks it’s too late to ever redeem himself. Buck’s convinced he’ll never make her proud.”
“Oh, yeah?” Y/N finally responded to Bucky’s confession. “How’d that happen?” She tried to sound casual.
Bucky’s jaw clenched at the question. “Probably Rebecca. Or Steve opening his big mouth.”
“Steve?”
“Yeah, he lives close to her. He sees her every once in a while.”
“So Steve sees your mom more than you do?” Y/N asked. Then she winced. “Sorry. I didn’t mean for it to come out like that.”
“I know, doll. Doesn’t matter, ‘cause you’re right.”
Y/N just waited, knowing that this was all leading to something.
“She wants to meet you,” Bucky stated.
“OK…” Y/N didn’t know what Bucky wanted.
She knew this was hard for him. It wasn’t just a matter of her boyfriend introducing her to his mother. It was far more complex. Y/N had already met the rest of his family: Steve, Rebecca, The Howlies. It wasn’t like Bucky was trying to keep her hidden, like he was ashamed of her or something. This was about his relationship with his mother.
Silence.
“Is that what you want?” Y/N asked gently. “For me to meet her?”
“I…I don’t know,” Bucky admitted.
“Scared she won’t like me?” Y/N teased. But Bucky instantly answered with seriousness. “No. No, she’ll love you. She’ll know you’re too good for me just like everyone else does.
Y/N was about to open her mouth to argue, but he continued.
“It’s just…when my mom and I are together, things are…”
“Tense?” Y/N offered.
“Yeah,” he sighed. “It’s not great. Even Rebecca gets uncomfortable. I don’t want to make you have to go through that too.”
“Well, for the record, some awkward family time is no big deal to me. That’s kind of a part of being in a relationship.” Then she laughed. “It’s not like my family is perfect. They were assholes to you when you first met them. And look how that’s turned around.”
Then her mouth twisted into a thin line and Bucky knew she had something else on her mind, but she didn’t want to say it.
“What is it?” He encouraged.
“It’s just…” Y/N paused, making sure she chose the right way to say it. “I know things aren’t great between you and your mom. But I do really want to meet her. Maybe this isn’t the time, but I just can’t imagine never getting to do that.”
Her eyes turned dark and sad as she looked down.
It was then that Bucky realized this was more about his insecurities and damaged relationships.
“Whatever you think of your mom or what she thinks of you…” Y/N continued. “I still want to meet the woman who raised you.”
Then she had a cheeky smirk slip onto her lips. “Because I happen to really love the bastard.”
Bucky chuckled. Then he gripped her hips tighter and swung her around, maneuvering their bodies so her back was on the couch and she was caged in by his body hovering over her.
“Bastard huh?” He growled.
But Y/N just giggled at his antics. “Yeah, I’m crazy about him.” He leaned down and kissed her. His lips crashing against hers. The scruff of his beard scratched her soft skin, but she didn’t mind one bit.
“Alright. We’re gonna do this,” Bucky breathed between kisses, like the contact was giving him courage. He sounded like he was convincing himself more than her.
Y/N cupped his cheek. “Bucky, it’s gonna be OK.”
————————————-
Tumblr media
Two weeks later, Y/N was holding on tight to Bucky as he drove them to his mother’s house.
Y/N suggested taking his motorcycle instead of her car, hoping it would ease him a bit.
Rebecca had offered to be there with them, hoping to ease the tension. But Bucky thought this was something he had to do without his sister.
When they pulled up, Bucky was slow to turn off the bike and put down the kickstand. Like he wanted to just make a run for it.
Y/N took his helmet off for him and quickly kissed him.
“Come on, Buck. We’ve faced scarier things than this.”
Bucky nodded. They sure the had.
“I just…I just don’t want you to see me differently after this,” he finally admitted.
Y/N had seen Bucky strong, he always was. He protected her. He protected people he didn’t even know. He was brave. He’d do anything to keep her safe.
But this was Bucky scared. And Y/N was realizing that this was one of the few moments where she could protect him.
She cupped his cheek. “Maybe I will see you differently. But I know I’m going to still love you, OK?” She waited for him to nod.
“You two just want to have dinner in the driveway?” A voice said from behind them.
Y/N quickly turned around to see a middle-aged woman leaning against the porch. She was beautiful, aging in a way that Y/N could only dream she would. Her hair was a dark red, which explained the unique coloring to Bucky and Rebecca’s brunette hair.
Her arms were crossed, and an amused, yet daring, expression was on her face.
It had Bucky written all over it.
Y/N gave her a warm smile. She would’ve tugged Bucky excitedly toward her, but he was already guiding her anyway.
“Mom,” Bucky cleared his throat. “This is Y/N.”
Y/N expected to be met with coldness or the same disapproval that had already been given to Bucky.
But Winifred seemed to be looking inside Y/N’s soul, already finding what had enamored her son.
She gave her a very subtle, but warm, grin.
“It’s so nice to finally meet you, Mrs. Barnes.” Y/N offered sincerely. But she didn’t know if a handshake or a hug was appropriate. She thought a handshake was safer.
Winifred didn’t seem to find it weird and shook it firmly.
“Please. No ‘Mrs. Barnes.’ Winifred will do just fine. Or even Winnie, really.” Then she eyed Y/N for a moment. “It’s nice to finally meet to you, Y/N. Becca has said nothing but wonderful things about you.”
Y/N was taken aback by the kind words. Winifred had the same forcefulness and sincerity with the way she spoke that Bucky did.
“Come on in,” Winifred waved. She glanced back at Bucky’s motorcycle. “I see you got him to finally start wearing a helmet.” Clearly she was talking to Y/N.
“Well, when he started getting bossy about me wearing one. It wasn’t too hard to point out the hypocrisy,” Y/N smirked at Bucky.
“Did more than I could do…” Winifred sighed and then gave Y/N a subtle wink.
She led them into the kitchen.
“Would you like some coffee?” Winifred asked.
Bucky scoffed playfully. “Y/N’s never said no to a cup of coffee in her life.”
Y/N rolled her eyes and instantly said please and thank you.
Once coffee was settled, Winifred addressed Bucky directly for the first time since they got there.
“I’m planning on dropping off some things at Good Will this week. James, can you make sure there’s nothing up in that old room of yours that you’re not too attached to. Take it or I’m giving it away for good.”
Bucky sighed. “Haven’t slept in that room for years. Can’t imagine there would be.” But he got up from his seat anyway.
As soon as his footsteps disappeared around the corner and up the stairs, Winifred’s entire energy changed.
“Now that’s it just us girls…”
Y/N couldn’t help but giggle.
Winifred didn’t waste any time asking Y/N every and any question. But somehow Y/N never felt like she was interrogated or tested. It was like Winifred was scared this was the only time the two of them would have together. She wanted to know everything she possibly could about Y/N.
Y/N tried her best to ask Winifred just as many questions, but it was quite hard.
Eventually the conversation slowed long enough and Y/N spotted a photo set nearby. Two pictures side by side in a duel frame.
Y/N got up to get a closer look.
It was Winifred, obviously much younger than now. Maybe even younger than Y/N was. But it was the other person in the photos that Y/N stared at. A man, young and handsome, and clearly related to Bucky.
“George…Bucky’s father,” Winifred explained quietly.
“I see where Bucky gets his handsomeness,” Y/N thought aloud. Then she quickly looked at Winifred. “But he has your eyes.”
Winifred smiled at that.
“Bucky told me a bit about him. I’m sorry for what happened.”
“It feels so long ago now. Like a different life. The memories feel the same as trying to remember a movie you only saw once or twice.” There were no tears that filled her eyes. She had come to terms with the loss long ago. She lived it every day.
“I’m just sorry for what it did to James and Rebecca. For them to never have a father. I saw how it effected James, how it still does. But there was nothing I could do.”
Y/N gave her a sympathetic look. “Well, for what it’s worth, I think you did a great job.”
“He didn’t want to come today, did he?” Winifred asked.
“I think he did want to come. But he was just worried and… scared.”
Winifred took in a deep breath. “Things haven’t always been easy between James and me,” she started. “I just wanted him to be the best person he could be. The world already has far too many bad men in the world. I know you’re well aware of that. I didn’t want him to be another one.”
“Bucky is a good man, Winifred.” Y/N urged. “Before I met him, I didn’t think – well, I’d kind of given up on finding someone.” She took a breath. “I know Bucky’s made some mistakes in the past. But we all have. And I know he’s done things that you don’t approve of. But he did them because he thought it was the right thing to do.”
Once Y/N’s little speech was finished, Winifred just watched her for a moment.
Y/N wasn’t quite able to read what she was thinking.
Winifred smiled sadly. “He was lost for awhile. His heart’s always been in the right place. But he just never seemed to find his direction.” Then Winifred playfully narrowed her eyes and tilted her head. “Meeting you today makes me think that’s changed quite a bit.”
“I love your son a lot.” Y/N’s eyes glazed over with tears. “And I know he’s tries to be better every day.”
Winifred reached over and squeezed her hand.
But Bucky had played his part of “looking through his old bedroom” long enough. They heard his purposefully loud footsteps come down the stairs.
Y/N quickly sniffed and straightened her posture, trying to hide any signs that she had almost started crying.
“Found these in the corner of my closet,” he announced as he tossed something to Y/N.
It was a small pile of old t-shirts. Some of them were bands, others just had a vintage vibe about them.
Y/N almost exclusively wore Bucky’s t-shirts to bed or just when she was lounging around the house. Clearly these were too small for Bucky’s now fully-matured and muscular frame. But they would still be a bit baggy on Y/N.
She grinned. “I’ll add them to my collection.”
“Oh, speaking of which…” Winifred got up and shuffled to a closet around the corner.
When she came back, there was a leather jacket in her hands. It was clearly from the 90s, but remained in pristine condition. It was broken in and lived in, but still taken care of.
“It was your dads. I found it in an old box I’ve ignored since – well, since he passed away. I thought you might want it.”
Bucky seemed very taken aback by both the jacket and his mother’s gesture.
“You should take it,” Y/N urged him gently.
He nodded, trying to hide his emotions and stepped forward, carefully taking it out of his mother’s grasp.
“I’ll get started on dinner,” Winifred announced. If she’d noticed Bucky’s emotional reaction, she pretended not to.
Y/N stepped to his side. She placed her hand on his back, rubbing circles soothingly.
“You OK?” She whispered.
He nodded, grateful to have her with him.
She gave him a quick but gentle kiss.
Winifred pretended not to see that too.
Dinner went rather smooth. Bucky was on his best behavior, not wanting any sort of argument or tension to make Y/N uncomfortable. Winifred seemed to be on the same page.
After dinner, Winifred got Y/N sucked into old photo albums of Bucky’s childhood.
It gave her and Bucky some time alone as they washed dishes and cleaned the table. Y/N made a fuss about not being allowed to help because she was a guest.
“The shop doing OK?” Winifred finally broke the silence.
“Better than OK, actually.” Bucky admitted sheepishly. “You treating that girl right?”
“I’m trying to.”
“I thought Rebecca was being dramatic when she described how you look at her. Now I think she was making light of it.”
Bucky looked over to see that his mom was smiling playfully now, teasing him.
“I know you think I’ve messed up a lot. But when I look at her, I can’t help but think that at least I did one thing right.”
“I know I’ve been hard on you, James. And we’ve had our disagreements. But that doesn’t mean I’m not still proud of you.” Then she put down her dishtowel and turned to fully face him. “James, no matter what has happened or what you will inevitable do, I’ll always love you… you know that, right?”
Bucky’s eyes glazed over and he dipped his head as he gripped the edge of the sink.
“I’ll always love you, James. You hear me?”
Bucky nodded.
“Winnie?”
They turned around to Y/N standing in the doorway of the kitchen.
“Could I take this and make a copy? I promise I’ll bring it back,” Y/N asked with a beaming smile.
It was a photo of Bucky. He couldn’t be older than 5 or 6. He had on a little denim jacket, his hair was a mess, and he was in mid-laugh when the photo had been taken.
Y/N, of course, thought it was the cutest thing ever.
“Course you can, sweetheart.” Winifred smiled.
“We should probably get going,” Bucky announced slowly.
Winifred walked them outside.
“You be careful on that damn deathtrap, James.” She warned lowly, like it was a battle she’d lost long ago but stills wanted to make her feelings known.
“Yes, ma’am,” Bucky replied.
Y/N turned to face her. “Thank you so much for having us. It was…it was so nice to get to meet you.”
“You too, sweetie.” She pulled her into a hug. “Take care of him for me, will ya?”
“Always,” Y/N muttered into her shoulder.
Winifred went back inside before Bucky even started his motorcycle.
“You OK?” Y/N asked Bucky as he handed her helmet to her.
He nodded and then paused, staring at her.
He clutched the side of his face and kissed her deeply.
She was caught off guard by it.
Bucky finally broke the kiss and pressed his forehead against hers. “Y/N, I love you so fucking much,” he whispered.
She grinned. “I love you too, Buck.”
-----------------------------------------------------
Shoutout to the anonymous person who asked about this originally and miraculously inspired something within me.
And for anyone who was curious my fan-casting for Bucky’s parents were Julianne Moore and Billy Crudup.
Let me know what you think!

Three Ways to Study Anatomy (Ace x Reader x Sabo) College!AU PART 1.5
Three Ways to Study Anatomy, Part 1: The Usual Way
Chapter Five: TGIF
~
Tumblr media
“I’m sorry, what?”
“A party! Our friend Law is in a fraternity and they’re throwing a party tonight to celebrate.”
Week one of semester was over, and you had been planning on spending your Friday night relaxing and maybe bingeing something on Netflix, but Nami had other plans.
“But it’s only the first week,” you said in disbelief. “What exactly are we celebrating?”
Nami chuckled. “The end of the first week of course. And don’t say you have homework. One night of fun won’t hurt.”
You snapped your mouth shut because you had just about to say that you did, indeed, have homework. There went your only good excuse out the window. “I don’t know, I’m not really the partying type…”
“Awh, come on, [Name]! It’s good to let your hair down every once in a while. Have some fun while you can!”
“But I won’t know anyone there.”
“You’ll know me. Also Vivi and Rebecca are coming. And Ace and the guys wouldn’t miss one of Law’s frat parties for anything. Come ooon, it’ll be fun!”
You sighed, pretending you hadn’t just perked up when you learned Ace and Sabo would be there. “I… guess I could take one night off…”
“YES!” You almost jumped at Nami’s outburst, then she gasped loudly and you almost jumped again. “We need to find you an outfit. I’ll let you borrow one of mine free of charge since it’s your first ever college party. If you spill anything on it though, the dry cleaning bill is on you.” She began rummaging in her closet, pulling out items one after the after until she had a small pile growing on the bed.
After saying no to every ridiculously short skirt and party dress Nami threw at you, you finally consented to a pair of jeans that, while they covered you completely, were so skin tight they leaved little to the imagination, and a top that showed far too much midriff for your liking, but was far more modest than the alternatives. Nami topped off the look with a pair of strappy heels and nodded approvingly as you examined yourself in the mirror.
“Not bad.”
You smiled at her over your shoulder. You had to admit, you looked hot. “Not bad at all,” you agreed.
* * * * *
You could hear the party before you had even turned onto the street—loud, thumping bass and raucous laughter drifted on the September breeze and you felt a sudden surge of apprehension. Nami seemed to have read your face because she put a reassuring hand on your knee.
“Hey, if you want to leave at any point, just let me know, ‘kay?”
You nodded, though you wondered what would happen if you just refused to get out of the Uber and went home instead.
The two of you were met with cries of greeting as you walked up to the door. You recognised a face or two here and there from some of your classes, but otherwise, they were all strangers to you. The bass from the music pounded your eardrums as you squeezed through the door and into the crowded hallway. Immediately, a solo cup full of some amber liquid was pushed into your hand by a random passer-by and you were bombarded with a flurry of introductions that went by so fast, you wouldn’t have been able to commit any of them to memory even if you could hear them over the music. Nami was quickly whisked away in the direction of the living room and you suddenly found yourself alone in a throng of almost-strangers.
You lifted the solo cup to your lips in hopes of soothing some of the nerves, but not a second later, the drink was plucked from your hand. You looked up, angry, but met the brown eyes and freckled face of Ace, and your frown immediately disappeared. He set the cup on a side table and handed you an unopened bottle of beer instead.
“Rule number one of frat parties: never drink something you didn’t pour yourself.”
You gaped at him. “But why would…”
“Trust me, some of these college guys have some not so innocent intentions.” Then his face split into a smile that left you breathless. “Good thing I’m here, huh? Let’s dance!”
Before you could come up with an excuse not to make a fool of yourself, he was tugging you into the crowd of gyrating bodies by the hand. You had no idea what you were doing, but Ace didn’t seem to care, laughing at your weak attempts to dance without spilling your beer. The warm, dancing bodies around you bumped and buffeted you into him so there was barely an inch of space between you and you hoped you could pass off your flushed cheeks as simple exertion, or maybe the beer you were working through perhaps a little too quickly.
It was nerve-wracking, being in the midst of so many drunk and excitable people, but with the alcohol warming your veins, and Ace’s comforting hand on your waist or your shoulder whenever the crowd threatened to swallow you up, you started to enjoy yourself. It was many songs later, long after Ace had been swept away by an extremely pretty and insistent girl, did you decide to make your way to the edge of the dance floor. Flushed and a little lightheaded, you looked around for someone—anyone—you recognised.
“Want some air?” said a voice by your ear. You turned to find Sabo in a button down shirt that showed far too much of his chest to be good for you in your current state. He held out a cold beer in offering. You nodded gratefully and took it, and let him lead you between the drunken frat boys and dancing sorority girls until you reached the front porch. You took a deep breath of cool, night air and the spinning in your head seemed to slow down a fraction.
You were having a hard time getting the memory of Ace’s hand on the bare skin of your waist out of your head.
When you opened your eyes, Sabo was watching you with a half-smile tugging at his lips. He looked away hastily when you noticed him staring and he gazed out over the front yard, littered with people smoking and making out on the lawn.
“So… having fun?” he asked.
“Surprisingly, yes,” you replied, honestly.
He chuckled at that. “I didn’t take you for a party person. But, then again, I didn’t think I was until college either.”
“I’m not, really,” you insisted. “Nami made me come.”
Sabo smiled knowingly. “Didn’t look like you were protesting just now.” He gestured inside.
You flushed. “Yeah, well… alcohol makes you do things you normally wouldn’t…” As if to emphasise your point, a very drunk and very naked frat boy streaked across the lawn, shouting the name of the college football team.
You both burst out laughing and when you finally calmed down, Sabo said:
“In all seriousness though, I’m glad you’re enjoying yourself. Even if you’re not the partying type, it’s good to relax and forget about school every once in a while. I think we’d all go crazy if we didn’t”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” you said, smiling at him. It was just now that you realised in the moments you had both spent doubled over in laughter, the two of you had drawn closer to each other.
“Just don’t overdo it. The number of times I’ve walked in on Ace dancing shirtless on tables…”
That got you going again and you found yourself leaning against each other as you giggled incessantly. When you calmed down you felt warm and a little sleepy. Sabo’s shoulder was pressed tightly against yours as you both leaned on the railing and looked out into the night, unbothered by the muffled bass and babble from the party. As much as you liked dancing with Ace, you wouldn’t mind just staying out here for the rest of the night in the pleasant glow of your tipsiness.
It took you a while to notice Sabo watching you from the corner of his eye. You smiled at him, taking in his blown pupils, his relaxed stance. He didn’t act drunk, but he seemed as pleasantly buzzed as you were and the smile he shot back made your heart flutter inside your chest. He opened his mouth to say something, his gaze flickering between your eyes and your lips, but before he could, the front door burst open.
“Sabo! Country Girl! There you are. Come join us for a game—oh. I’m not interrupting something, am I?”
You and Sabo hastily stepped away from each other. “Not at all. A game sounds fun,” said Sabo. “That is, if [Name] wants to?”
He looked at you imploringly and for a moment, you felt the urge to refuse Ace and stay outside with Sabo all night. But you didn’t like the way Ace was glancing between the two of you with a knowing smirk, so you tamped the urge back down and shrugged.
“Sure.”
Ace led you inside and back through the party, but this time, he led you up the stairs and into one of the bedrooms. You wondered briefly whether you were allowed to be up here, but then saw that the room was filled with faces you recognised. Nami, Vivi, Rebecca, Sanji and Zoro were there, along with a couple of people you hadn’t met yet. Or maybe you had, you just didn’t remember it in the flurry of your arrival.
“Law, Country Girl, Country Girl, Law,” Ace offered lazily, waving his hand at a guy with black hair and a goatee seated on the bed.
“[Name],” you corrected and Law nodded. He wasn’t what you had expected from a frat boy at all. He seemed quiet, reserved, and looked like he hadn’t slept in weeks, but he was smiling good naturedly. He gestured to the unfamiliar faces either side of him, one with scruffy red hair and the other wearing a baseball cap pulled low over his eyes.
“This is Shachi and Penguin.”
You nodded to each of them in turn and they grinned broadly at you. You looked around for a place to sit and chose a spot on the floor beside Nami, who beamed at you as you sat down. Sabo made to take his place next to you but Ace got there first. Sabo frowned slightly, but Ace pretended not to notice as he turned to face the room. His smile was devious.
“So, what shall we be playing tonight?”
“Well…” said Nami with an identical smirk. “I was thinking, since we have a few newbies with us tonight, we should all get to know each other a little better.” She reached behind her and pulled out a bottle of vodka.
“It’s time for some ‘Never Have I Ever’.”

Tumblr media
“Y/N! Y/N, open the door!”
You hurriedly stepped out of the bathroom in a t-shirt and a towel wrapped around your waist.
Kevin was standing in front of the bathroom, not even a little concerned about the state of your dressing.
“We’re taking bets about whether it will rain this week or not,” he announced. “You have to cast your vote.”
You looked around the room. Meg’s door was locked from the outside which meant she wasn’t here.
“Who let you in?”
“I have a key to your apartment,” he said matter of factly. “So does Cas.”
“Vaguely concerning, but I’ll allow it, since you’re not trying to rob me. Only tempting me with the vices of gambling.”
Kevin looked delighted at the retort. “Aha! So you do have a cutting edge humour. I’m winning 5 bucks over that from Jack.”
You rolled your eyes and walked into your bedroom, finding your drawstring pants and pulling them on.
“If it makes you feel any better, you now have a key to our apartment also as well as Cas’s.” Kevin jerked his head towards the kitchen counter where a new pair of brass keys shone in the light. “On this floor, we all like to keep the keys handy in case of emergencies.”
He plopped down on the sofa. “So about the rain…”
It looked like he really had broken into your apartment to ask for your bet.
“It’s September. It’s never going to rain,” you said.
“And you’re sure about that?”
You narrowed your eyes. “Should I be checking the weather forecast? And how much are we playing for?”
“You can check the forecast,” he said sagely, “It’s allowed. I have to warn you though that basing your vote off it has proven disadvantageous in the past. And we’re not playing for money.”
“Do I get to know who sided with what?”
“Not till you’ve put your bet in.”
“Dang it!”
He wiggled his eyebrows making you laugh. “Okay. I’m sure. I’ll go with what I said. It’ll not rain.”
“Oh, and Y/N-” he smiled evilly- “You should know that if it rains, you’re going to have to get wet in it! You have Pam, Cas and Jack siding with you so far.”
A shiver ran down your spine at the thought of drenching in the rain. “It’s not going to rain, so I’m safe. What happens if I get it right?”
“The losing party has to be a company to judgy Judy and sun bath all of Sunday. Lotion will be provided.”
“This is ridiculous,” you laughed.
He stopped at the door. “Only when you lose.”
You spent the weekend catching up on your reading and familiarising yourself with the syllabus. When that was done, you set to work on your assignments… and when that was done, too, there were always job applications. Sustenance was unfortunately a necessity.
Come Sunday evening, Meg dragged you to the downstairs to the get together. It surprised you just how much everyone liked having you around, especially since you contributed absolutely nothing to the conversations. Pam pulled an accurate impression of the undergrads on the second floor and everyone laughed.
It was a homely feeling.
************
Sam was already ready and going through the papers on his desk when you entered the lecture hall. He did not look up from them as the class slowly filled up. You didn’t necessarily make it a point to sit with Madison but somehow for most Civil Procedure classes she happened to sit next to you. You liked her well enough, however those girls who came with her said such awful things sometimes that it made you wish you were anywhere but around them.
Today Madison came in before any of the girls and took her seat next to you.
“Hi,” she said, drawing her laptop out.
“Hey!” You smiled at her.
“Thanks for sitting besides me,” Madison said. “Having you around makes me feel so calm, and helps me concentrate.”
“Really?” You asked, surprised.
“Yeah,” she said, then smiled apologetically. “You know how the girls are… they’re always so jittery and gossiping. But you… you just have such a steady energy around you.”
Strange. To you, it didn’t feel like you had energy at all.
“You know what I mean, right?” Madison said. “I feel like I can tell you anything, share things with you and you won’t judge me or tell on me. I feel like you wouldn’t turn me away if I ever asked for your help. You are just such a nice person.”
“Madison…” you said, touched.
She shook her head. “You can just call me Maddie, if you like.”
She wasn’t necessarily right about you being a ‘nice person,’ but you certainly wouldn’t judge her… you of all people after everything you had done. And when it came to helping out another, it was just the decent thing to do, especially for someone you called a friend. It didn’t make you a nice person. It just made Madison’s other friends not so good at friendship.
“Alright then, Maddie,” you smiled. “We shall sit next to each other for as long as you want.”
Madison beamed. Not her usual girly laugh, instead a smile that reached her eyes in all their seriousness. You wondered what sorrow she’d had to live through.
“Maddie!” Rebecca came up from behind and sat next to Madison. “I missed you over the weekend. Oh, we’re sitting with Y/N again?”
“Yes,” said Madison too sweetly. “She’s my friend. Try not to steal her answers though, Becca.”
Behind her Lacey giggled.
You had to cover your face, too, to hide the grin.
Sam called the class to attention, smiling at everyone. It was breathtaking and painful in equal parts.
“Before we begin,” he said, “It’s been brought to my attention that I’m the only one who hasn’t set you guys an assignment. We can’t have that happening now, can we?”
There were a few groans, and Sam gave everyone a teasing look. “It’s not something that’ll take up a lot of your time. I’m not setting you an essay, just a 500 word brief. Before we get into that, I need to know you guys better. Everyone who has a pre-law please raise your hands. About fifteen to twenty percent of the class raised their hands.
“Impressive,” Sam said. “Sociology, political science or any other law allied field?”
Majority of the remaining class raised their hands.
“And how many of you guys have worked in any capacity in law fields? Have actual experience?”
About ten to twelve people raised their hands. Slowly, you put your arm up as well.
At the edge of your vision you sensed Rebecca glaring at your hand.
Sam sweeped his gaze over the class. Maybe he hadn’t expected you to be one of the crowd, because for a split second the startlement was clear on his face. He blinked twice, then looked away.
Split second of eye contact was enough to make you weak in your knees. Bring back a flood of memories, of having looked so deeply in those very eyes.
He paused, cleared his throat and said, “I suppose this will be somewhat easier for those of you who have a pre-law background. For your assignment, you have to pick the most dicey, interesting or unusual Civil suit or petition you can find, and describe in brief how the written content and consequent presentation saved or screwed over the case. Go crazy with the type of case, as long as it’s civil and filed in the states. The law library has a complete and updated archive of all judgements and petitions in public domain for your reference.”
Giving you a stink eye, Rebecca raised her hand.
“Yes… Miss Staten, is it?”
“Yes, Rebecca Staten,” she said, practically gloating. “Do you specialise in Civil cases? And if so, can we pick one of yours?”
Sam’s eyebrows twitched a little and he brushed at the hair near his ear. To anyone else it would have meant nothing, barely noticeable. You knew better. It was discomfort. He was uncomfortable with the question. Seeing him, you felt an instinctive spark of annoyance towards Rebecca, which was absolutely ridiculous. It wasn’t your place to feel anything on Sam’s behalf. Not anymore.
“I don’t specialise in Civil… I do predominantly take them up, but that’s certainly not it. In fact, my most distinctive case isn’t even a Civil one,” he said. “Rest assured, if you want to make the most of the assignment, none of my cases would be of any help.”
“Makes me wonder…” Madison whispered next to you.
“You have until Wednesday to hand it in. It does not have to be technical, so it shouldn’t take much time,” he announced. “Back to the class now. We’re working on Trial components and rules…”
After the classes for the day ended, Madison caught up with you.
“Where are you headed?” She asked.
“The library.”
“Oh, excellent, I was heading there, too,” she said happily.
“Where are the others?” It made you feel like a wretched person, but you didn’t think you could take anymore of those girls.
Madison wiped her brow. “They wanted to head out to San Francisco for the night.”
“But it’s a Monday,” you spoke unthinkingly.
She gave you a look which made it clear that she shared your opinion.
“I thought you’d want to research Mr. Winchester's assignment. Do you mind if I join?”
The thought of working with someone for once was actually pleasant, “Of course I don’t. It’ll be fun, Maddie.”
She smiled at your use of her nickname. “Alright then.”
The Robert Crown law library was smaller and very modern in comparison to the Green library. It was all white walls, beige minimalist furniture and compactly placed bookshelves next to rows of computers. The appearance didn’t fool you in the least. You knew from having read and well, from having heard about it so many times from Sam that it was extensively stocked with information on thousands and millions of suits, petitions, litigations and what not. It had every possible book that you would want to refer to while building a case, by-laws, constitutional laws and so many other rules and regulations.
The two of you picked adjacent computers and began sifting through the cases. The sorting system itself boggled your mind, let alone the data within. Soon you were lost in a sea of cases, just reading through them instead of researching for the assignment.
“Well, I’ll be damned,” muttered Madison besides you.
“Mmmm?” You asked absentmindedly.
When she didn’t reply, you looked over. Madison was staring intently at the screen.
“You know when Mr. Winchester was talking to Becca earlier?” She asked, without taking her eyes off the screen.
“Yeah?” You remembered vividly.
“He mentioned how his most distinctive case wasn’t a Civil one?” Her voice was low. “I got curious and looked it up.”
You didn’t even know what to say.
“Turns out he was downplaying it. This looks like a huge deal.”
Despite everything, you gave your swivel chair a push and moved next to Madison.
“What’s it about?” You asked, curiosity getting the better of you.
“It’s complicated and over two years old. Looks like it’s a matter of twin homicides in conjunction with multiple matters of abuse and a custody battle. It says he was working with Simpsons and associates in LA back then.”
“LA?”
“Yeah.” She added guiltily, “I pulled out his public profile in accordance with his registration with the Bar Council. It has his whole bio-data.”
You knew you shouldn’t look. God, you knew it and you looked anyway.
“Stanford… Yale… and there’s a small town in Kansas where he was registered for a year. Then one year in NY, Four in LA, and two at Griswold Acton.”
New York… So he did go there. The thought pierced you like a shard.
“I think... I think I’m gonna go back now,” you said quietly.
Madison looked at the watch. “Shit! It’s already past 7! Yeah, we should hurry.”
“Hey, Y/N,” Madison said, as you walked along the curb, “The weekend after this one, I’m throwing a party at this bar a few blocks away. And I really want you to come.”
“Is it your birthday?” You asked, feeling awful that you were asking after being invited.
“Yes, the next day. I’m doing this the night before so we’ll be together when the clock hits 12. You’ll come, right?”
You hesitated.
“It’ll be fun, really. I know the girls can be a bit too much sometimes, but there’ll be other people.”
That was even worse.
“It would mean a lot to me,” she insisted.
“Okay,” you acquiesced. “Only if you let me get you a present.”
She looked like she wanted to protest, but then gave in. “Okay.” She threw her arms around you. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
You wandered back to the apartment, racking your brain about what to put in the assignment. Nothing came to you.
Weird dreams interrupted your sleep that night, homicides and custody disputes. You kept yelling that the child was yours and like in the old 70’s movies, the judge banged the gavel calling for order.... Then, the scene shifted. You were trapped, your hands and shoulders bound. There was glass around you. Shards of glass, blood and icy water, numbing your senses, dulling your pain as it soaked your hair and drenched you to the bone. You wanted to scream for help, but cold also made you sleepy. You wanted to ask the judge… tell him to hand you the child, but there was no judge… just cold and hammering rain.
You woke up chilly. Drenched in sweat, but still very cold. It was just a dream… not reality. Just a dream. You rolled over and sleep found you again.
“You look like you came back from the dead,” Meredith said first thing next morning.
You ignored her and took your seat in the row ahead of her. Unfortunately, that put you right next to Brad.
Sam was on time as usual. He ran through his papers as the tech set up his laptop.
“He’s alright, really,” Brad said, making conversation. “Girls seem to swoon on him because he is the youngest faculty member and all. But he’s just average as a teacher.”
“I think he is fantastic,” you said, jutting your chin out, voice unnecessarily sharp.
Brad raised an eyebrow. “I thought you weren’t like the other girls.”
“If by other girls you mean the ones that worked hard to get into Stanford and know how to appreciate a good teacher, then I’m exactly like the other girls.”
“Ooohhh, feisty,” he murmured under his breath. Sam called the class to attention and you chose to ignore Brad completely for the rest of the lecture, then made sure that you sat by yourself for the rest of the day.
The deadline for the assignment was tomorrow and you had no clue what you were handing in. That did not help with the anxiety.
On your way to the library, you dropped by at the Student’s employment office- without much hope- to check on that application anyway.
The girl at the desk ran through your profile once again as you gave her your name.
“Y/N,” she said in a monotone of someone who was bored out of their mind. “I actually have a hit for you here. I should warn you, it's a tough gig-”
“Tell me!” You interrupted before she had even finished the sentence.
She peered at you over her spectacles. “The odd hours librarian’s post at the Law library. You had an upper hand over the other applicants because you are a law student and live close by. You also have experience as a librarian before.”
“Yes, I want it!”
“Chillax, woman,” said the girl. “It’s an odd hours job. That means the night shift on three days and alternate weekends. It’s an 8 hour shift and 5 shifts per week. Twenty an hour.”
“Done.” You thought back to last night. It wasn’t like you were getting any good sleep anyway. Might as well make money out of it.
The girl shrugged. “It’s yours then. You start this weekend. I’ll hook you up with the other librarian peeps. They’ll let you know about your shift.”
You thanked her and happily walked back towards the Law building. At least one thing seemed to have worked in your favour. One minute you were walking ahead, next you were on the floor, all your things knocked out of your hands.
“I’m so sorry.”
You looked up into stunning hazel eyes. They were as familiar even now as if you had looked into them every day of your life.
Sam froze, having just realised that he had walked into you.
Up close he looked tired and definitely a lot thinner.
“Oh, God. Y/N!” Madison, who happened to walk by, reached out to help you to your feet.
“Are you okay?” she asked.
Numbly, you nodded.
Sam methodically picked up your books and wallet, stacked them in a pile and handed it to you.
“Are you hurt?” He asked, quietly, eyes trained on the books in your hand.
You shook your head.
He acknowledged it with a jerk of chin and left without another word.
“What an ass!” Brad muttered coming up from behind. “First he knocked her down and then didn’t even apologise. I don’t get why y’all idealise him so much.”
“Oh, shut up,” Lacey said. “Y/N was the one who walked into him without looking. Ruined his perfectly good suit with her chapstick smear. And he did apologise!”
You excused yourself as quickly as you could, still feeling the tingle on your skin where his fingers had lightly brushed yours, senses still filled with the smell of his cologne. Even after all these years it was still the same.
You had bought that cologne for him. He still used the same one.
Tears pressed your eyes as you entered the vine covered gates of the apartment.
At the lift, you ran into Cas.
He looked pleasantly surprised at the sight of you, which was weird because you both did stay on the same floor.
“You look… are you okay?” His voice was coloured with concern.
You had to stop running into people when you were upset. Had to.
“No, no, I’m fine,” you tried to assure him. “I was heading home.”
“Yes, home,” Cas sighed, absentmindedly. “I miss having a roommate sometimes. Conversation is what makes it home.”
You had reached your door.
“Hey,” you said, making an impulse decision. “Do you maybe wanna come in for a mug of coffee or something?”
He looked startled again. “Yeah, I would love that.”
Meg wasn’t home. You weren’t surprised.
“Please make yourself at home,” you waved towards the sofa. “I’ll be right back.”
You quickly dumped your bag and books on your bed, swapped the shoes for your comfortable slippers, tied your hair in a bun at the top of your head and made a beeline for the kitchen.
Cas was in the balcony, looking at the front yard.
“You guys have a fantastic view from here,” he said morosely. You felt bad for him. His was the only flat on the floor that didn’t have the yard facing balcony.
“Why didn’t you ask Pam to sublet you this one after the last tenant moved out?”
He shrugged. “I don’t spend much time at the apartment anyway with the night shifts and emergencies at the hospital. Besides, mine’s a small one and I don’t have a roommate, so it's easy to clean after.”
“Is it too much work at the hospital?” You asked sympathetically, then realised how dumb the question was. It was a hospital. Of course there was too much work.
“Sometimes,” he answered truthfully. “The ER duty is dreadful because a lot of times you just can’t save a life. OPD days are so much better.”
You nodded thoughtfully.
“What about you? How’s law school treating you?”
You told him about how everyone was just so different from you. They had social circles and Monday night outs and were worried about internships for status as opposed to just wanting a job or actually learning. You told him about how there always seemed to be an ulterior motive to everything that they said or did.
It sounded like a rant even to your own ears, but God it felt good to unload. Cas was probably bored out of his mind. You let it all out anyway.
“And then- then they judge people based on their appearance. Just because I wear a sweater all the time doesn’t make me drab. I’m just really sensitive to cold. Just because a professor is young and good looking, doesn’t by default make him a bad teacher.”
You had to stop to take a breath, and were immediately possessed by a sense of embarrassment. Why were you putting this on a very tired Cas?
Cas, however, looked deep in thought. “Hmmm…” he said. “Correct me if I’m wrong. You don’t have any immediate family, do you?”
You shook your head. “I have no family left.”
Cas didn’t ask you the why or how come.
“Maybe that’s why,” he said, face resting on his palms. “You don’t live for anyone but yourself. You don’t have to put on a show like them.”
“What do you mean?”
“It means that you are being motivated by a desire to learn, to become a better person and to help the world become a better place. Most people are motivated by power, or money or just wanting to create an impression. No wonder you don’t fit in, Y/N. You stand out.”
You stared at him, stunned.
“Oh, don’t look at me like that.” Cas put his hands up. “I mean it. Besides, you have us. I can tell for a fact that people here really like you. So who cares about the rich ass kids? They’re the reason lawyers got a bad rep.”
You giggled.
Then you remembered the coffee pot. “Oh, damn!”
Cas chuckled as you went to grab the pot and fix two coffees.
“What’re you thinking about the weekend?” Cas called from the balcony, “I think we’re on the losing side.”
“It’s September. It’s not raining.”
“That’s what I said last week. It rained.”
“Oh, no!”
Cas took a mug from your hands. “Thank you.”
He took a sip. “The forecast is never useful. Wish we could sue them for it.”
You put your mug down.
“CAS! You are a genius!”
“What?”
You rushed to your room to grab your computer, then settled on a chair, quickly typing the words out.
“I knew it!” You shouted in vindication. “I remembered reading about it.”
“Errr….” Cas hovered over you utterly confused. You turned the laptop so he could see.
“Look! In 1988 a woman did sue Chicago’s famous newsman over a wrong weather forecast!”
“Are you serious?” He put the mug down and sat next to you, reading the article.
You pointed at it excitedly. “See that’s what it says.”
“They dismissed her, right?”
You grinned at him. “She settled outside for a sum of half a million.”
“Well, I’ll be damned,” Cas whistled.
“Oh, this is perfect for the assignment! Thanks, Cas.”
“My pleasure,” he said, somewhat bemused.
He read over your shoulder as you wrote the brief extract, pointing out how it was a trend setter of it’s kind when it came to dragging news media to the court. The woman had missed a flight which was cancelled as a precaution to the bad forecast and viola! It never rained.
“This look good?”
“It’s perfect!” Cas said.
You dropped the file into the mailbox, then paused when it came to actually typing a mail, fingers trembling.
This was Sam you were writing to. He used to be your Sam.
You did it nevertheless. You typed his id and the thumbnail of his profile appeared. He wore a tan turtleneck and was smiling at the person holding the camera. Who could it have been?
“Is that the young professor you were talking about?” Cas asked offhandedly.
“Mhmm.”
“I can see why he gets that sort of attention,” Cas chuckled.
You saw it, too.
Sighing internally, you hit the send button.
Cas high-fived you. “There are very few things in life as satisfying as a last minute submission,” he said, then looked at the watch. “I better go now, I’ve got an early morning shift.”
“Oh, wait for a bit,” you said, rushing to the kitchen counter, and pulling out a jar of cookies. “Here, have one. I got a job today, as a librarian. My Gran used to say that one should always offer sweets while  breaking a good news.”
“Oh, congratulations!” Cas took a bite of the crumbly choco-chip cookie and moaned. “Oh, these are wonderful!”
You thrust the entire jar in his hand. “Here, take them all. I just like baking them…. not much of an eater.”
“You made these?” His voice was incredulous and you blushed.
“My Gran used to run a small bakery from our house. I grew up watching her do what she loved the most. The smell of baking comforts me… and let’s just say I needed to be comforted lately.”
“Well, these are excellent!” He didn’t even resist for the sake of formality and took the jar.
You walked him to the door. “Hey, Cas. Thank you for tonight.”
It had been the first time since you had moved to the city that you actually felt like you had talked because you wanted to, shared what you really felt. It was the first time you had truly rejoiced that the bubble was gone and you could be happy in the company of another person.
Cas didn’t ask why you had thanked him. Oddly, he understood.
He placed a hand on your shoulder, where it lay heavy and comforting. “I had a great evening. If you ever want to share anything or you know bake too many cookies, I should tell you that I live right next door.”
You giggled. Cas tightened his grip on your shoulder for a moment and let go. He waved at you once more before closing his door.
Later, as you lay in bed, you thought through the day and just how your emotions were all over the place. One minute you were distraught and the next, excited. The way that Brad annoyed you, no one ever had except for that one idiot in high school. You were used to having people rely on you. Even when you worked as a paralegal all through last year, your boss had been happy with your work, your colleagues were polite… but no one had remotely elicited any sort of reaction from you. It had been the same through all those years of pre-law. It hadn’t ever bothered you that you weren’t a part of the group. In fact, now that you looked back on the years, everything seemed so hazy, like you were looking at your memories through a heavily fogged glass.
In fact, that one year spent with Sam was clearer than the seven years spent after. You could recall every moment lived with him as if it was merely yesterday. And yet things that had happened a month back felt like they had happened ages ago.
Deep down, you knew the reason for it. With Sam you had been happy… happier than you had ever been before. It was the last time you had been happy, too. So did that mean you were beginning to be happy again now?
Re-learning it one step at a time?
You rolled, mulling the thought over in your head and fell asleep dreamlessly after a very long time.
************
“Oh, the sweet release of Friday!” Madison moaned. “I can’t wait to fall into bed. Isn’t that right, Y/N?”
“I actually have plans for tonight,” you told her, “So I’m not expecting to see the bed anytime soon.”
“Oh, you wouldn’t show up to Brad’s party, but you have plans tonight?” Lacey wiggled her eyebrows. “Is there a special someone?”
It was Jack. You were going bowling with Jack and whoever else was free. You had protested the plan by explaining how awful you were at bowling. It had only delighted Jack more. Apparently, he sucked, too, but he really wanted to impress the girl who worked at the bowling alley. If he came off looking better than you, maybe, just maybe he’d have a chance with her. It seemed like a very very unlikely event, but you didn’t have the heart of telling him that. In fact, to your surprise you found yourself really excited for the evening.
“Just a friend.” You shrugged.
Lacey looked like she was about to press her point when Madison interrupted her.
“Oh, did any of you hear from Mr. Winchester? Regarding the assignment?”
You threw her a grateful look for changing the topic.
Madison had received a reply on Wednesday evening with a positive critique and so had Rebecca along with a few more people.
It was all Rebecca needed to go on and on about the assignment, and how Mr. Winchester loved her work and remembered her name. You were a little disappointed that you never received a critique… but were you even expecting a reply from Sam? You had accepted that he was going to ignore you.
Sam did not mention the assignment at all. He made a few timed jokes about how everyone hated the last class on a Friday including him and he’d make it a point to let everyone off fifteen minutes early. The lecture was as captivating as usual. He spoke with such passion for law that even the most monotonous topics became suddenly interesting. You wouldn’t have cared if he had even extended the class, but he kept his promise and ended it about ten minutes early.
“Before you all leave for a much deserved weekend,” he said, “I want to congratulate you all on an assignment well done. Most of you had the most interesting topics picked out for the note. It certainly made for entertaining reads. I was hoping at least someone would bring up the several instances when Red bull got sued and I wasn’t disappointed. Four of you did. I’m sorry I couldn’t reply back to all of the emails, but there was a particular one that I’d like to bring to your attention. A 1988 lawsuit turned to a petition after a woman sued Chicago’s famous newsman Gary Holster over the wrong forecast.”
You could barely believe your ears.
“Mary Johnson was flying from Domestic Chicago to LAX along with 122 other passengers. And after predictions of a heavy storm, the flight was cancelled. Of course. it barely even rained. As a result, Miss Johnson lost a prospective job and the opportunity at a better life. What started as a snowflake of a suit, snowballed into a petition with over 76 plaintiffs after a newspaper published her story tagging it as ridiculous. The other passengers reached out to her, expanding into a full-fledged writ.”
He paused and took a deep breath. “All of you should take a look at the case as well as Ms. Y/L/N’s note. It was a particularly smart choice to pick this case because I had asked for weird and unusual… and the exact oddity of the case was what made it a national sensation in the late 80’s.”
Sam looked up, with precision, straight into your eyes. “Good job, Ms. Y/L/N.”
Your heart fluttered in your chest. The corner of your eyes stung.
Behind you Lacey muttered, “Oh, look, yours isn’t the only name he remembers, Ms. Staten.”
“Have a great weekend!” Sam wished before leaving the room. The class immediately broke into a babble and some people turned to spot you in the crowd. A few of them even came up to you to congratulate on an assignment well done. You promised to forward the assignment to the class group so everyone could see it. As it turned, out a couple of people stayed in the building next to yours.
While leaving, you did notice Rebecca staring at you with ill concealed dislike and something close to suspicion.
“Y/N!” Jack was waiting for you in the front yard, which was officially nicknamed the meadow. He was sitting next to Judgy Judy with a satchel slung across his body.
“Hey, I’m going to run upstairs and drop my bag.”
He sprang up from the parapet and eased your bag off your shoulder. “Don’t bother. We can just drop it off at Pam’s. Watch.”
He slid the shutter to her ground floor flat window and with extreme expertise pushed your big inside from in between to bars.
“Genius!” You lauded.
Jack grinned, “Pam is home and sleeping. By the time we get back, she’ll be up, ready to handover the bag.”
“Truly epic.”
“You guys don’t have too much fun without me!” Kevin yelled from his balcony where he was sitting with Cas. He looked bummed.
“What’s up with him?”
Jack waved at Kevin and said loudly enough for him to hear, “Nothing. Kev’s just pissed that the weather is clear.”
Kevin cursed. “That dumb reported said it was going to rain. I’m gonna sue her!”
Next to him, Cas gave you a pointed look and winked. You couldn’t help the grin that spread across your face.
Jack offered you his arm and you took it, feeling a strange happiness settle within you. Hand in hand you walked out. For the first time in years you didn’t know what to expect of tomorrow or even the next moment. The feeling was worth living for.
