oh yes, i would explore all the ideas i abandoned bc "it was for the better"
If I ever became a famous author, I would write silly fanfiction about my characters and not reveal that it’s me. See if people realize or not lol

I have ~Thoughts~ on the Harry Potter Phenomenon that was
(Courtesy of memories prompted by this Tumblr Poll)
Back when I was a senior in college (back in the mid-to-late 1980s), I actually wrote a fantasy novel for kids aged ~8 - ~11 (in a self-designed course for a single credit, under the guidance of my Literature advisor), inspired by a series of dreams and recurring characters that showed up in them.
My advisor encouraged me to try and get it published. And so, I arranged with teachers from my old school to have a class of 30 or so 10 year-olds beta read it, and give me feedback for revisions. The kids also encouraged me to try and publish it.
So I did.
Now, back then, there was no "Self Publishing." The closest thing was "Vanity Publishing," where you would pay 100% of the publishing cost of your book, which would be printed in hard copy, for the benefit of having 500 -1,000 books shipped to your personal address, which you were then responsible for storing and selling out of the trunk of your car in a parking lot, somewhere. And if word got out that you were trying to claim credit for being a "published author" because of a Vanity Press book, actual publishers wouldn't touch you with a 40-foot pole.
If you wanted to get published, you had to buy that year's copy of Writer's Market: a listing of magazine and book publishers, and agents, with a brief description of what material they published, and what they wouldn't touch.
Guess what genre no agent or publisher was interested in handling?
That's right, Gentle Readers: Fantasy for children aged 8 - 11. I would have happily sent out a dozen queries for each story I wrote, if there were publishers and agents willing to look at them. But for three to four years of trying, in directories of two-columns of tiny print, and several [hundred]* pages long, I'd be lucky to find two or three outlets even willing to look at fantasy for kids.
The general consensus, across the publishing business, was that fantasy was a dead and obsolete genre. If it was for kids old enough to read chapter books and novels, it must also be firmly grounded in realism and actual history, because everyone knows the only people buying books for kids that age were teachers, who wanted stories with practical applications in the classroom.
***
After 3 - 4 years of trying, while I was in grad school, I finally got a rejection from the one agent who agreed to read my novel. A few days later, I received news that my mother had died from the breast cancer she'd been fighting, and my heart just went out of the project altogether.
A few years later, the first Harry Potter book was published. And it became a worldwide phenomenon. And it was the kids, themselves, who were driving the sales.
See, I think the real reason the books were such a success, even though they were never really very well written, was because they were in a genre the audience was hungry for -- a genre they'd been denied access to for all of their young lives.
Someone who is starving will think even moldy bread is delicious.
*Gosh, what a word to leave out via typo; the Writers Market rivaled the Manhattan Yellow Pages in length.

alright. i'm taking it upon myself to put something to rest.
there is a new mlvn argument on the market, and i have to say, it is the absolute most BACKWARDS, IDIOTIC, WILFULLY IGNORANT take i have ever seen from them. and it is so easily disprovable that i need to make a post about it and put it in the ground early on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
if you've been around since s4 vol1 era, then you've seen the evolution of their arguments surrounding the monologue. first it was "mlvn was love at first sight, because mike said so". they were all posting the clip from s1 ep 1 of mike finding el in the woods, clips from all throughout s1, and saying "this mike was in love with el!!" because mike said so. in the monologue. when bylers pointed out that this claim from mike directly contrasts his behavior in s1, we were called delusional and told we were just coping. i was even told by someone on reddit that mike wasn't acting like he loved her because he was afraid of being made fun of by dustin and lucas, which deserves it's own separate post, but anyways...
after what finn said at the paris con, aka this:
Tumblr media
bylers obviously took this as a win, because it very obviously completely dismisses the idea that mike was being truthful in the monologue. because of this, mlvn's argument has shifted. now, they are claiming that what mike said in the monologue, "I knew right then and there in that moment that I loved you." was not a lie, but HYPERBOLE.
here's just a few examples of this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
holy fuck. where do i even start with this...
i guess let me start by saying that i am an english major. i am a creative writing student. english language arts has always been my forte. it's been my best subject my entire life. i was the kid people went to for help in ELA (english language arts). i was the one tutoring my friends. i was the one explaining things to them. in college my friends would line up to get my help with their english work. i edited and revised their essays. i spent close to 10 hours a week in english classes discussing literary devices and analyzing different stories, which i excelled at.
i am not trying to 'flex', i am simply providing context as to why i believe my opinion on this is worth something. mlvns try to say being a writing/film student means nothing in this argument, but it really really fucking does. i, and countless others in the byler fandom, are LITERALLY more educated in this sort of thing than those who did not spend thousands of dollars to study it. sure we may not be renowned writers with masters degrees, but who do you think we learned from?? our professors, who ARE renowned writers with masters degrees. its no different than trusting the opinion of a biology major when talking about biology. of course ELA is more subjective and free, but when you actually study it you find that its more concrete than you'd think. there are definitions, there are guidelines, there are rights and wrongs. of course you do not have to obey those rules, but in the world of publishing and analysis there are things that make sense, and things that don't make sense.
for example. you can totally write a story where a character says "i knew right then and there in that moment that i loved you" and add whatever explanation or nuance that you want. you can write that with the intention of the character being truthful, but maybe exaggerating a bit. whatever you please. you have the creative freedom to do that whether it makes sense or not.
what you cannot do is claim that that phrase is a hyperbole in that context, or any context, because that is OBJECTIVELY wrong. that is incorrect and inarguable. there are phrases that could potentially be debated between those educated in ELA on whether or not it could be considered a hyperbole, but that would requite the phrase to have ambiguous wording. the phrase in question does not check those boxes. it is not ambiguous in any way shape or form. it's not hyperbole. it's not even hyperbolic in any way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
here's a link to an article with 50 different examples of hyperboles. i promise you that our quote in question will not be there, and that nothing on that list will be remotely similar to it.
"I knew right then and there in that moment that I loved you."
i mean you are genuinely a fucking doofus if you're genuinely trying to claim this is a hyperbole. i need you to be so fucking for real. mike is referring back to a specific moment, remember? maybe you don't because i know y'all don't even watch the show, so let me refresh your memory:
"But the truth is, El...I don't know how to live without you. I feel like my life started that day we found you in the woods. You were wearing that yellow Benny's Burgers shirt, and it was so big it almost swallowed you whole. I knew right then and there in that moment that i loved you. And I have loved you every day since."
el even has a flashback to that exact moment in the scene right after he says it, and right before he says "I knew right then and there etc..."
he literally starts it off with "The truth is"
Tumblr media
not meant to be taken literally.
would it make sense to say "The truth is, I'm so tired I could sleep for a century." or "The truth is, I'm so hungry I could eat a horse." or "The truth is, I'm dying of laughter."
NO! IT WOULDNT!
mike's monologue was written/approved by the duffers. the same duffers who graduated from a very prestigious film school and created the biggest tv show in the world. they know what a fucking hyperbole is and that you don't preface one with "the truth is". it is genuinely ridiculous to suggest that they let that stay in a scene where a character is supposed to be finally revealing the truth to both another character and the audience.
let's circle back to those screenshots of dumbass mlvns cosplaying as ELA students
"i fell in love with you instantly" vs "i fell in love with you mere days after we met . ur arguing semantics when the point is that they fell for each other really fast"
please tell me, in WHAT fucking world does someone say "I knew right then and there [in the first moment I saw you] that I loved you" when trying to explain that they really fell in love a few days later. and in WHAT UNIVERSE would a WRITER choose to have their character, who is supposed to finally be telling the unfiltered truth, say that. the answer is, there isn't one. that is so fucking backwards and idiotic that i can't believe i'm even having to explain why. the monologue is fabricated. it was written and approved by professional writers and directors. if mike fell in love with el at some later point in s1, or realized it at some later point in s1, then he could've just fucking said that. he could've just told her the moment he fell for her or the moment he realized. they didn't have to make it all twisted and confusing for no reason. he has absolutely no reason to lie or exaggerate (if he is straight and in love with her).
Tumblr media
DING A LING A LING A LING!!!!! THATS A BELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"this feels like taking mikes words too literally"
oh, my apologies for taking his words literally during a fucking CONFESSION OF LOVE that he gave her while she was DYING. sorry for taking a line prefaced by "The truth is" literally. you are totally right and i will never do that again!
"when looking back on it it probably does feel like he loved her from the start"
cute sentiment, but that's literally NOT WHAT HE SAID. for the millionth time (see how i just used a hyperbole in a place where it makes sense? where i didn't preface it by saying it was the unfiltered truth?) he said "I knew right then and there in that moment that I loved you." he is saying he saw el in the woods in the rain in her yellow benny's burgers shirt, and KNEW he loved her. he realized it in that moment. that is what he wants el to believe. he is using specific language to pin point the moment he realized it on that moment. like im so serious when i say that if you try to say anything else you genuinely have worms for brains.
any way you logically look at this, it is crushing for mlvn. even if it was a hyperbole, which it is NOT, why the hell would the writers have him exaggerate his feelings to cater to her when it would be much more meaningful for his ACTUAL feelings to save her life?? why would mike feel like he needed to exaggerate?? and i'm sorry, i dont buy the heat of the moment bs. mike has nearly lost el multiple times because he kept lying to her. they had a bad fight days earlier because mike wouldn't tell her the truth. so he finally gets another chance to tell her the truth, and he EXAGGERATES?? HE TELLS A WHITE LIE??? that would also be crushing for mlvn. but none of that matters, because it's not a hyperbole, it's a lie. a flat out lie.
let be me clear, that does not make mike a bad person. in fact, it actually makes him an incredible, caring, selfless person. (remember the synopsis for s4 ep9? "With selfless hearts and a clash of metal, heroes fight from every corner of the battle field to save Hawkins ---and the world itself.") he lied because he knows he doesn't love el the way she wants and he feels like his actual love for her (which is platonic) would not be enough to save her. he devalues his own feelings because they are not what el wants. this is why he nodded after will said "It's scary to open up like that, to say how you really feel. Especially to people you care about the most. Because...what if they don't like the truth?" he feels like he owes el the love she wants, and he is willing to lie to her if it means saving her life. because he truly does love her and care about her, so much that he will do whatever it takes to not lose her.
and i know a lot of mlvn's devalue literary/media analysis and english/creative writing, and our opinions in general, so in case all that wasn't enough, i also asked mlvn's old friend about this. their friend being AI.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
mlvns, everything with a lick of sense, including artificial intelligence, is proving you wrong. you are incorrect. what finn said at the paris con put the nail in your ships coffin and you know it. so please stop embarrassing yourselves on the internet and making dumbass claims like this when you know nothing about the subject. you look stupid.
this rant isnt just coming from a place of byler truther anger, it's english major anger. LEAVE MY SUBJECT ALONE. PLEASE.

Hello~
I have a few new followers so I thought I would introduce myself.
I never planned on being a writer. It wasn’t on my bingo card as they say. I’m a wife, a mother of triplets, and have a full time very demanding career. I am American, born and raised on the east coast. I’m feisty and not to be messed with according to my husband. I have a kind heart and a long colorful history. (In other words I’ve been through hell and back-I’m grateful for what’s important and the rest can kiss my ass.) I come from an extra large loud family. All this contributes to my sense of humor and sarcasm.
About five years ago, I had a dream or recurring story the would play out in my head every night but I couldn’t get past a certain point. I grabbed my phone and started writing in my notes a little bit every chance I got. Before you know it I had the first five chapters of “Little Voices”. From there it grew to 180,000 plus words and 58 chapters (the revised version is 49)
My fanfic writing continued with “Don’t Love Me”, “A Life Left Behind”, and “I Loved Her First”. (These stories are no longer available- I have plans for them) And of course “The Lies They Told” the was rewritten and changed to “All the Secrets” available on Kindle. My first self published book.
I have two stories in the works. One about Wildwood, NJ and another set in San Francisco. I’m hoping to release them on Kindle soon- ish. Plus my new fanfic coming out on AO3 this Friday. “My Best Friend’s Lass”.
The strange and funny thing is there’s only a handful of full of people who know I write…my husband, my kids, my two best friends and you. Some of you ❤️have been with me since chapter one and have certainly read more of my work than my husband.
Without your love and support for my stories, I wouldn’t do this. For that I thank you. 😘
Any questions or ideas or anything at all. I’m here and love to talk about my writing, or this fandom. Message me!

“Welcome. It’s a pleasure to have you join us here.. and I’m sorry about your former office.”
A large wooden desk with a few tan files sat inbetween ☁️ and his new boss. Shedding beams into the room, the sun’s golden rays illuminated the frosted glass surrounding the two. ☁️ shook his head lightly, him then smiling at the older woman.
“It’s no problem. As long as this department isn’t anything like the other, this’ll feel like a promotion.” ☁️ brushed his hand against his navy blue sweater and sighed. “Thank you for having me.”
“Like you said, this is kind of like a promotion. I expect great things from you.” The boss stood up as a soft knock erupted from outside of the office. A man with long-ish blonde hair walked in and smiled- first at the boss, and then to ☁️.
“This is who you’ll be assisting. Felix will give you written pieces and ask for revisions until he sees that it’s fit to be published. Unfortunately, we are short staffed by choice, so the work load will be a lot. Please keep up with the given tasks and their deadlines. Felix?”
☁️ turned his head back to the man.
“Hello, nice to meet you. My name is Lee Felix and I’ll be taking care of you. I look forward to working with you.”
☁️ simply smiled and spoke a shy “hello,” as he stood up. “I’m ☁️, it’s nice to meet you as well.” He then thanked the boss for her time and followed Felix out of the room.
“Behave, Felix!” The boss shouted as ☁️ stepped out of the room behind the man. He followed Felix down the left side of the large room, stopping at a set of cubicles that sat against a wall of windows. Started from the floor and touching the ceiling, the view displayed a bustling city. The cubicle was light gray and quite large, with a grey laptop located on the desk inside. Felix walked in and pulled out the large cushioned chair, and looked around awkwardly.
“So.. this is where you’ll be spending a majority of your day. Since it’s so spacious there’s only two cubicles located against the wall on this side of the room. My area is directly in front of yours.” He pointed over the cubicle wall. “If you ever need anything, please just walk over or.. just look over it. Sound good?” Felix explained, his voice soft yet sonorous.
☁️ nodded and smiled bashfully. Felix was remarkably good-looking, which was unusual for an office setting such as this one. The man was pretty much ☁️’s type, too, making him even more nervous than he already was.
“Yes. Thank you, Felix.”
Felix smiled and nodded to the man before leaning against the cubicle’s entrance. He dug his hands beside his white button-up and down into his black pant’s pockets, waiting for ☁️ to sit down before responding.
“Of course. I’ll let you get used to the office before I ask you to do work.”
☁️ acknowledged what he said by nodding and smiling.
After Felix left, ☁️ opened the new computer and typed in his passcode information. For some reason, the office wifi wouldn’t connect, though. After trying for another minute, he stood up and peered over the wall to see a sitting felix.
“Felix?” ☁️ asked, his nose just barely peaking over the wall. Felix smiled and stood up to look over the wall as well.
“What’s up, love?” He asked, placing a hand on the edge to support his weight. ☁️ was initially taken aback by the pet name, but ultimately didn’t mind.
“I can’t get onto the wifi for some reason. Is there a different one that you use?”
“Oh yeah, sorry about that. I guess our tech guy forgot to set that up for you. Jisung always forgets.”
☁️ watched a Felix closed his computer and then made his way back over to his cubicle. As a result, the man sat back down and perked his back up to fixed his posture. Felix strolled in after a few seconds and leaned into ☁️’s computer, his body softly brushing against the man’s shoulder. ☁️ couldn’t take his eyes off of Felix’s side profile as he typed into the computer.
“All right, you’re all set.” He cooed, brushing against ☁️ once again. As Felix was about to leave the cubicle, ☁️ shot up and grabbed his hand. Surprised, he stopped and turned around, still holding ☁️’s hand.
“Sorry if this is weird to ask, but..” ☁️ paused and tilted his head. “Do you have a girlfriend?”
“Oh, no.. not really my type if you know what I mean..”
“Oh okay.. then do you have a significant other- or something?” ☁️ asked.
“No,” Felix smiled and tightened his grip on ☁️’s hand. “but I think I kinda have a crush.”
☁️ knew exactly what he meant and mentally blushed. “Same here. Maybe we could go out sometime?”
“For sure. What’d you have in mind?”
“Would you wanna.. come to my place?”
Felix looked to the side, and then back to ☁️. “We don’t have to wait. Here, follow me.” He said, leading ☁️ into a storage room a few feet away from their work areas. Though the lights were extremely dim as the two hurried in, ☁️ could see the many drawers, bulletin boards, and spare furniture. Felix lightly closed the frosted door and somehow locked it from the inside, him then turning his attention to ☁️. He grabbed ☁️’s hands and held them in his own.
“Do you mind?” Felix asked as he raised one of the man’s hands to his mouth, kissing it. ☁️ shook his head and wrapped his arms around Felix’s neck, Felix reacting by guiding ☁️’s back into the wall behind him. ☁️ pushed Felix’s head forward, allowing the man’s lips to meet his own. Felix’s hands ran down ☁️’s torso, then settling on his hips as ☁️ began french kissing. Felix’s grip on the man’s waist tightened the deeper they kissed, with Felix’s bulge now rubbing against ☁️’s. A few seconds later, Felix pulled away from ☁️- strands of his blonde hair having fallen over his eyes.
“Come over here.” Felix instructed, using a hand to drag ☁️’s wrist over to a small table sitting against the wall. Felix gently pushed ☁️’s shoulder down as he leaned back on the table, leaving ☁️ to fall onto his knees. With a growing bulge right in front of his face, it was only natural for ☁️ to begin unbuttoning the man’s pants.
“Ah.. you’re excited, aren’t you?” Felix teased, a soft chuckle escaping his lips. He ran a finger through ☁️’s hair as the man exposed his dick print, ☁️ then pulling the pants down to Felix’s ankles. Felix began unbuttoning his white top as ☁️ stroked the man’s boner through his gray underwear.
“Can I take it out?” ☁️ asked, continuing to caress it. Felix finished unbuttoning his top, displaying sculpted abs much to ☁️’s liking.
“Go ahead.”
☁️ slowly pulled the man’s underwear down, not anticipating getting smacked by his length.
“Oh, sorry.” Felix laughed. ☁️ rolled his eyes and smiled, him then beginning to stroke Felix’s cock, the man softly whimpering as he did so. ☁️ grinned at the reaction, placing Felix’s dick inside of his mouth and slowly throating it. He leisurely bobbed his head up and down as Felix threw his head back, practically moaning out now.
After a few seconds of steady swallowing, Felix quickly grabbed ☁️’s head and yanked it back. His dick fell out of the man’s mouth dripping in saliva.
“Sorry, I didn’t want to finish yet.” Felix said, kneeling down to match ☁️’s eye level. “Can I get some of this too?” He whispered as he got closer to ☁️, him then reaching behind the man and squeezing his ass.
“Oh, do you have a condom?”
Felix reached behind him and magically pulled out a wrapped condom and a tiny bottle.
“Of course.”
☁️ furrowed his eyebrows and muttered an “alright.” as he followed Felix’s action of standing up. Felix’s skinny dick was still hard and poking out in front of him. Pulling his own pants and underwear off with quickness, ☁️ placed a hand on Felix’s chest.
“You can sit or lay on the table if you’d like, or you can-”
“You should let me do the work.” ☁️ murmured, softly pushing Felix back. Felix smiled and nodded, sliding back to sit on the table. He rolled the condom over his dick as ☁️ climbed on top of him, the man placing his knees beside each of Felix’s thighs. Waiting for him to pour the liquid onto his dick, ☁️ wrapped an arm around Felix’s neck- the man’s chest inches from Felix’s face.
“Alright, go ahead.” Felix muttered, placing his hands on ☁️’s waist and guiding the man down onto his cock. As his pink tip slipped in, ☁️ moaned out and tightened his grip around Felix’s neck.
☁️ now sat entirely on Felix’s dick, moaning softly as he took his time to undulate on it. The two huffed and whimpered as ☁️ began moving steadily on Felix’s dick, with ☁️’s chest still inches from the man’s mouth.
“That’s good.” Felix whispered, his eyebrows furrowed and his ajar lips producing silent moans. ☁️ felt Felix’s lips on his nipple a second later, him sucking and licking as the man bounced. ☁️ sped his undulating form up as Felix moved his hands down to ☁️‘s ass. Guiding him up and down even faster, ☁️ quickly became overstimulated. His knees buckled and he fell into Felix, who pulled away from the man’s nipple and placed his chin into ☁️’s neck.
“Can you keep going?” Felix hummed into ☁️’s ear, rubbing up and down his waist as he waited for an answer. After another few seconds, ☁️ pulled away from Felix and planted a kiss on his cheek.
“Yeah, you can keep going.”
Felix nodded, pulling ☁️ into him and wrapping both of his arms around ☁️’s waist. As Felix began thrusting softly into him, the man wrapped both arms around Felix’s neck. Felix grunted as his thrusts picked up in speed, filling the room with the sounds of clapping and ☁️’s whimpers. Both of their moans hummed in each other’s ears, pushing the two to the brink of finishing.
Felix continued shoving the man onto his dick despite feeling ☁️’s knees buckle for a second time. As ☁️ felt his leaking dick brush against Felix’s rough abs, he threw his head back and gasped. He ejaculated, painting Felix’s abs in a glistening white liquid. The man thrusting into him noticed, and became even more turned on, using all of his force to drill into ☁️.
“I-I’m cumming.” Felix gasped. After a few more seconds of harsh and sloppy thrusting, Felix forced ☁️ onto the entirety of his length, filling the boy up with his semen.
The two breathed heavily in front of each other before Felix fell back onto the table, pulling ☁️’s arm as he did so. ☁️ fell on top of him, his energy drained. The man pulled Felix’s dick out of him and slid the condom off, bringing it in front of him so that he could tie it and throw it aside.
“I would’ve lasted longer if you weren’t so cute.” Felix muttered, stroking ☁️’s arm as the two laid still.
“It’s okay, there’s always next time.”
“Yeah.. and I’ll be sure to take you out to dinner beforehand.”
☁️ chuckled at the comment, planting a kiss on Felix’s puckered lips. “I’d like that.”
“I would too, love.”

Hey friends,
I know this isn’t the marginalia update you were hoping for, but HOLD ON. This isn’t going in the direction you think it is.
First of all, thank you so much for your patience. I'm really sorry for leaving you on such a horrendous cliffhanger for so long. That was never my intention, but the AO3 curse got me so, so bad.
As most of you who follow me on Tumblr know, my health deteriorated significantly over the course of the last two years. It began with chronic migraines and brain fog, which then worsened and led to chronic fatigue, increasing cognitive/language confusion, and finally issues with balance and weakness in my extremities. Long story short, in February I was finally diagnosed with a Chiari malformation, and I had brain surgery last month. I'm happy to report that it appears to have been a complete success! My symptoms are gone. I feel better than I have in literal decades. The curse is lifted. Nice. Now I’m just doing the hard work of recovering from surgery.
In the meantime, a few things have happened:
First, I became a traditionally published author. My debut novel scooted out into the world last year, is currently nominated for a big fat award, and I have more books coming out over the next few years. I have no idea how I got here, but holy crap!!
Second, JKR pulled more bullshit. And while I think it’s fantastically ethical, actually, to engage in the reclamatory spaces of fandom, my appetite for it is sort of gone at the moment. I doubt forever. These things wax and wane, even when the author isn’t a piece of shit.
So here’s what’s going on.
I’ve spent the last month reworking marginalia into a piece of original fiction. Which honestly hasn’t been very hard to do. I’ve written hundreds of fic over the years, and this is the first one that I ever felt compelled to revise into something else, because it's also the only one that I knew could stand on its own two feet as more than just an intertext with canon. This fic has always been a frank conversation with its source material, but the result of that has allowed me to bypass the constraints of JKR's world to create something entirely my own. It's also about so much more than that frank conversation. It’s about navigating a version of yourself you can live with under inherently unethical circumstances. It’s about chronic pain and invisible disability, and I do see the irony in not knowing I had either of those things at the time I was first drafting. It's about breaking cycles of abuse. It’s about empathy. I think the world needs more stories like this.
So my agent is going to begin pitching the reworked version to publishers relatively soon, at which point this fic will have to come down from AO3. I'm going to set the date for June 7th. From there, one of two things will happen:
1. The reimagined version will eventually get picked up by a publisher, will become a traditionally published novel—probably a duology, let's be real—and I’ll be very open about where you can get your hands on it.
or
2. No one bites. And this will go right back up on AO3, comment section book club in tact, and I’ll finish the story when the time is right.
In the meantime, I don’t mind you downloading it if you want, and I don't mind you sharing it with others if they ask. It’s a big part of why I’m giving you the heads up. And Pigoletta’s excellent podfic will stay right where it is unless she decides otherwise at some point. But what I do ask is that you don't repost marginalia publicly, not on AO3 and not anywhere else. And for the love of fuck, don't feed it to an LLM to try to generate an ending.
Okay, I think that's it! Thank you all for the gorgeous community that's grown around this fic. I'm excited to see what the next chapter brings.

Look at the kanji there. His given name is twice the size of his family name. Plus, his given name doesn't have the furigana (tiny text to tell you how to read it) that you can see against his family name—despite it being easily misread as a common noun.
Because, as eny fule kno, Shido's given name is spelled the same way as 正義 seigi, meaning "justice". This will be important later. The game lampshades this, by the way, in gossip chats around the election:
Tumblr media
"Shido-san really lives up to what his name means. He's like justice personified." Okay, gossiping person, you do you.
united future
At the bottom, in tinytext next to his spooky Illuminati-esque Whole World In His Hands logo that isn't megalomaniacal at all, we have the name of his new splinter party:
未来連合 mirai rengou United Future
未来 mirai means future; 連合 rengou means a bloc, a coalition, an alliance or union. 連合ヨーロッパ rengou yooroppa, "a federal Europe"; 連合国 rengoukoku, "the Allied powers". So we get "United Future", perhaps less catchily "The Alliance for the Future", which is very much the sort of name new Japanese political parties tend to have.
what about that other bit
Hahaha, you mean this little thing?
Tumblr media
This is Shadow Shido's slogan. This sums up his mission, his motive, the whole reason he wants power. And what does it say?
私のために、民衆は尽くす watashi no tame ni, minshuu wa tsukusu The people will serve me.
What a nice thing to say! What an excellent sentiment, befitting of a public servant in a democracy! And what an unashamed piece of shit, eh? You can see why Japan is underwater in his head.
Constructions of the form X no tame ni tsukusu are quite common; my dictionary lists several. So this little phrase is a play on words in at least two ways:
First of all, it's an adaptation of a well-known phrase, 民衆のために尽くす minshuu no tame ni tsukusu, "to serve the people". Shido has taken this and inverted it: the people will serve him.
But second—remember how Shido's given name, Masayoshi, is written the same way as seigi, meaning "justice"? One of those common little example phrases in my dictionary, under tsukusu, is the following:
正義のために尽くす seigi no tame ni tsukusu to work for justice
This is why his given name is in massive letters on the poster: because this play on words is deliberate on his part: Shido is justice, as his name should tell you; he defines what is good and right and true—and what's good and right and true is what is in his interests. And so the people will serve him. The same way they'd serve the nation, or society, or the public good.
It's a really interesting line. And, of course, it calls to mind Akechi—supposedly a detective, in the service of justice, and yet in reality....
BTW, don't forget this is Shido's Shadow talking. How much does Shido himself, the guy walking about upstairs, delude himself about all this? That's an exercise for the reader.

Paperinik/Duck Avenger/Superduck (English Translated Comic Collection)
Tumblr media
https://archive.org/details/paperinikduck-avengersuperduck-english-translated-comic-collection/ While Duck comics, in the US at least, waned in popularity long ago, it's a completely different story in other parts of the world, namely Europe. They never stopped loving Disney Duck comics, and continue to publish new stories featuring them, with Duck comics outselling both Marvel and DC... but that doesn't mean they didn't try their own hand at creating superheroes featuring the Ducks. Created in by Elisa Penna, Guido Martina, and Giovan Battista Carpi, "Paperinik" first appeared in a 1969 Italian Donald Duck comic story, featuring Donald continuing the legacy of an old famed thief, using his notes and some help from Gyro Gearloose, as he steals from the rich and acts as somewhat of an anti-hero.
Created initially as a response to readers requesting Donald getting a few of his own "wins" in the comics, the character developed over the years, with Paperinik eventually evolving into more of a superhero type character, and gained his own villains and allies, as his superhero persona grew as a character and grew in popularity.
Tumblr media
In the 90s, in an attempt to reinvent the character for a modern audience, a group of young artists were brought in to create a new comic line featuring the character, later admitting they were heavily inspired by Marvel Comics of the 90s, called "Paperinik New Adventures". Duckburg was reimagined as a sprawling metropolis, and while the basic history of the character remained the same, he found a new ally through the intelligent AI known as One, who helps him through new gadgets made by his creator Everett Ducklair, as they fight off an alien race known as the Evronians who are hellbent on destroying the planet and sucking the life energy out of everyone on it. Along the way they meet new villains, and gain new allies such as a robot woman from the future known as Lyla, and an alien with a tragic past known as Xadhoom, while also dealing with reporter Angus Fangus, who constantly tries to smear the hero’s good name.
The comic line was a success, going for 3 #0 issues, 50 mainline issues, and a sequel comic which ran for 18 issues and its own special. The comic was also briefly rebooted as "Pikappa" and ran for 32 issues.
Classic Paperinik stories continued to be made during and after this, and during the 2010s, the PKNA continuity returned under the "New Era" brand name, and also continue to be made to this day. Classic Paperinik also continues, with it even crossing over with various PKNA stuff during the "PK Universe" comic.
This collection is an attempt to gather every Paperinik story currently translated into English in one place. There's of course the issue of how to exactly name this collection, as "Paperinik" has two official English names.
Tumblr media
During the 70s and 80s, a few Paperinik stories were translated into English and released in a few collections where he was named "Superduck", although these translations appear to be lost. During the early 2000s, Disney Adventures would publish their own Paperinik story in the pages of the magazine, naming him "Duck Avenger", to match with the magazine's initials. This name carried over to a few comic translations done by Gemstone in the early 2000s. When Boom Comics got the license to republish Duck comics, they used the Duck Avenger name as well... but when Disney started to put up additional Paperinik comics on the ComiXology app, they used the earlier translated name of "Superduck", both for their revised re-releases of the "Ultraheroes" crossover comic, and also for the official translations of the first 13 Pikappa comics and a few classic stories. However, once the license moved over to IDW and Fantagraphics, the "Duck Avenger" name was reinstated, and seems to have been used on everything since then.
I simply decided to use all three names for the top folder/title, and used what official English names we have for the specific series when labeling the inner folders, and used the Italian original name when an official English name didn’t exist.
Tumblr media
This comic collects almost all of the official translations that exist of the Paperinik comics. Specifically, those by IDW, Gemstone, Boom, Disney ComiXology, and those by Fantagraphics. Whenever an official translation exists, that's presented as the default/proper version.
Tumblr media
Additionally, I've included what I believe to be every single fan translation/scanlation that exists for the series. This includes translations of classic Paperinik comics, though those are greatly scattered and are definitely not comprehensive by a long shot. A lot of these were done by different translators, and because of this, the names used in each translation vary. Some adopt the "Duck Avenger" name, some use the "Superduck" name, and some simply use the "Paperinik" name. This carries over to other Paperinik exclusive characters such as Daisy's alterego Paperinika, which is Super Daisy in the official translations, but the "Duck Defender" in the fan translations (admittedly due to the suckiness of the official name), the great thief Donald took after, Fantomius (Fantomallard or the Phantom Thief in the official translations), etc. So don't expect great consistency with the names.
Tumblr media
Thankfully, all of PKNA, P2, and the remaining issues of Pikappa were fully fan translated. All of these simply adopt the "Duck Avenger" name, so it's consistent thankfully (although due to Pikappa using the "Superduck" name in the official translation and “Duck Avenger” in the fan translation, the name isn’t consistent for the reboot's issues unfortunately).
Translators are fully credited within the file names, as I'd feel like a jerk if I didn't, and they deserve credit for the awesome work they've done. Although for the PKNA issues, I simply credited them to the "PKNA Translation Project". Some sources mistakenly credit them all to Banker, due to the available issues mainly being available to download only on his website, but, while he did translate a good chunk of them, the PKNA translations were actually done by a group of people. Headed by Lord Birch, who did a good number of the translations themselves, I unfortunately couldn't find a credit list listing who translated each individual issue. So, I simply credited the team, just remember that Birch and Banker did a good number of them along with a few other people.
Tumblr media
For the “New Era” comics, I’ve included all of Banker’s translations of the first seven issues. I’ve also included @donphanti's scanlation of the 9th story, @uncaaj’s scanlations of stories 10-13, and @pktheduckavenger’s scanlations of stories 14 and 15. Unca AJ also retranslated a few prior PK stories, which are included as alternatives.
I've included a bunch of extra comics as well, namely one-off stories and stuff connected to PKNA, such as the Disney Adventures comic, the video game tie-in comic, and a few anniversary strips.
Tumblr media
Additionally, I've included all of the translated "Double Duck" comics I could find. For those who don't know, Double Duck was a comic with a similar premise of Donald having an alter-ego, although this time he was a super smart secret agent known as "Double Duck". Early issues already stated that he was the Duck Avenger on top of his secret agent gig, but eventually a full blown crossover comic was made with the PKNA series, confirming that they took place in the same universe and were the same Donald, just from different points in time. Because of this, I've included all 5 stories officially translated by either Boom Comics or Disney ComiXology, and also 18 out of Banker's 21 translations of later stories (sadly three story translations have dead download links and they don't seem to be mirrored anywhere), plus his translation of the crossover.
I’ve also included three translated “Mickey Mouse Mystery Magazine” issues, which feature Mickey as a detective in a city known as Anderville. Made by a ton of the same staff as PKNA, I’ve heard rumors that there were plans at one point for a possible crossover, although I’m unsure. Still, I’ve included it due to the connection.
Tumblr media
As an additional note, in cases where a story is only available in a TPB and is only one story of a TPB, I’ve included only an extract of it as part of the main collection, but the full TPB is included in full as an extra. The only exception is issues 4 and 5 of of PKNA, as they were only released in the TPB collection, and it only covers PKNA material in a collected format.
I believe this is the most complete/definitive collection of Paperinik/Duck Avenger/Superduck comics, at least that currently exist as of 4/2/2025. Only known missing scanlations (that currently exist) are Banker’s translations of Double Duck stories 7, 12, and 15. And the only known missing official translations are from old obscure and rare UK collections. Those include Donald Duck # 13 (1975), Jumbo Book #1 Superduck saves the day! (1985), Donald Duck Fun Library #8 (1978), Donald Duck Fun Library #10 (Unknown Date, Maybe the 70s?), and Donald Duck Fun Library #14 (Unknown Date).
If any new scanlations or translations are made, let me know! I’ll update the collection. But for those looking to get into Paperinik and don’t know where to look, hopefully this can be a great resource for you.
Enjoy!
Tumblr media
EDIT: Forgot to mention, during my research, I found a fansite called "Phantom Duck", which goes over a lot of the history of the Paperinik character's life and origins. This includes a detailed breakdown of the character, his gadgets, his hideout, and notably, his origins, which explains some stuff from comics currently not translated into English. There's also a ton of information about the great thief he is the successor to, Fantomius, who also gets a very detailed history section. The website doesn't seem to be finished, with a lot of pages being "Under Construction", but what pages are there are very interesting and insightful, especially for someone just getting into Paperinik as a character, even though it only focuses on the classic version of the character and doesn't really delve into the PKNA stuff. So, I converted every working page into a PDF, and then converted that into a high quality CBZ file!

On Celebrating Errors
Tumblr media
Isn't it beautiful? The lovely formatted tables of register and stack contents, the trace of function addresses and parameters, the error message ... it's the most beautiful kernel panic I have ever seen.
Why on earth would I be so excited to see a computer crash? What could possibly be beautiful about a kernel panic?
This kernel panic is well-earned. I fought hard to get it.
This kernel panic came from a current NetBSD kernel, freshly compiled and running on Wrap030, my 68030 homebrew computer. It is the result of hours upon hours of work reading through existing code, scattered documentation and notes, writing and rewriting, and endless compiling.
And it's just the start.
As I've said before, a goal of this project has always been to build something capable of running some kind of Unix-like operating system. Now that I finally have all the necessary pieces of hardware, plus a good bootloader in ROM, it's time to give it a shot. I'm not that great with this type of programming, but I have been getting better. I might just be able to brute force my way through hacking together something functional.
It is hard.
There is some documentation available. The man(9) pages are useful, and NetBSD has a great guide to setting up the build environment for cross-compiling the kernel. There are some published papers on what some people went through to port NetBSD to this system or that. But there's nothing that really explains what all these source code files are, and which parts really need to be modified to run on a different system.
I had a few false starts, but ultimately found an existing 68k architecture, cesfic, which was a bare minimum configuration that could serve well as a foundation for my purposes. I copied the cesfic source directory, changed all instances of the name to wrap030, made sure it still compiled, then set about removing everything that I didn't need. It still compiled, so now it's was time to add in what I did need.
... how ... do I ... ?
This is where things get overwhelming very quickly. There is documentation on the core functions required for a new driver, there's documentation on the autoconf system that attaches drivers to devices in the tree, and there's plenty of drivers already to reference. But where to start?
I started by trying to add the com driver for the 16550 UARTs I'm using. It doesn't compile because I'm missing dependencies. The missing functions are missing because of a breaking change to bus.h at some point; the com driver expects the new format but the cesfic port still uses the old. So I needed to pull in the missing functions from another m68k arch. Which then required more missing functions and headers to be pulled in. Eventually it compiled without error again, but that doesn't mean it will actually run. I still needed to add support for my new programmable timer, customize the startup process, update hardware addresses, make sure it was targeting 68030 instead of 68040 ...
So many parts and pieces that need to be updated. Each one requiring searching for the original function or variable declaration to confirm expected types or implementation, then searching for existing usages to figure out what it needs ... which then requires searching for more functions and variable types.
But I got something that at least appeared to have all the right parts and compiled without error. It was time to throw it on a disk, load it up, and see what happened.
Nothing happened, of course. It crashed immediately.
I have no debugging workflow I can rely on here, and at this stage there isn't even a kernel console yet. All I could do was add little print macros to the locore startup code and see where it failed. Guess, test, and revise.
I spent a week debugging the MMU initialization. If the MMU isn't properly configured, everything comes to an abrupt halt. Ultimately, I replaced the cesfic machine-specific initialization code and pmap bootstrapping code with functions from yet another m68k arch. And spent another day debugging before realizing I had missed a section that had comments suggesting it wasn't for the 68030 CPU, but turned out to be critical for operation of kernel memory allocation.
Until this point, I was able to rely on the low-level exception handling built into my bootloader if my code caused a CPU exception. But with the MMU working, that code was no longer mapped.
So then came another few hours learning how to create a minimal early console driver. An early console is used by the kernel prior to the real console getting initialized. In this case, I'm using the MC6850 on my mainboard for the early console, since that's what my bootloader uses. And finally the kernel was able to speak for itself.
It printed its own panic.
The first thing the kernel does is initialize the console. Which requires that com driver and all the machine-specific code I had to write. The kernel is failing at its step #1.
But at least it can tell me that now. And given all the work necessary to get to this point, that kernel panic data printing to the terminal is absolutely beautiful.

Hi. I'm a 2nd year philosophy student (the program is 4 years). My Descartes' professor helped me formulate a thesis for my research assignment, which is due in 2 months. Now, he has proposed that I publish the paper once it's finished (in an indexed journal), BUT signing him as a coauthor AND finishing it before May ends. I don't know what to do. I have 5+ research assignments due for other courses, and it is actually my first time writing a serious paper. What should I do? Is it okay to accept my professor proposal? I don't know how academic publishing works.
Hi, congratulations on receiving such a proposal from your professor, and for all the progress you've made in your program so far! It sounds like you're doing really interesting research.
It’s completely okay to pause and think this through. Publishing is an exciting prospect but can also be time-consuming, especially considering revisions and other components of the process. It seems like you're already balancing a full course load and a lot of moving pieces.
If you're interested in the opportunity, you might ask your professor what their co-authorship would involve and whether the timeline can be adjusted. Co-authorship is normal–especially when all parties contribute significant intellectual work to the paper. However, if it feels like too much right now, it’s also fine to decline and focus on your coursework for the time being. You’re still early in your academic journey and it's not necessary to rush. It may be worth learning more about the publishing process, either from your professor or from other sources, before making any commitments.
We’d love to hear from others, too:
Have you ever co-authored something with a professor?
What helped you decide when (or whether) to publish your first paper?
Any advice you wish someone had given you at the time?

Hi, you mentioned having some resources for people considering Indie publishing? I would love to know more!
Hi! Yes!
So you mentioned not having a big budget, which was discouraging you from going the indie route, and I did a metric tonne of research before publishing Changeling, and came across a handful of really good, free resources so thought I could pass some along in case it's helpful!
The only thing I don't have a good, free, replacement for is an editor I'm afraid, but a robust series of self edits could work well, or possibly a kickstarter for the editing costs? Something to look into maybe.
If you do decide to run a kickstarter to cover your editing costs, I'd highly recommend the Facebook Group "Kickstarter for Authors", loads and loads of free advice can be found in there, but that's all I can really suggest since I've not run one myself.
When it comes to preparing a book for publication, however, I have a couple of helpful free or low-cost resources.
is Reedsy Book Formatter. Now, Reedsy recently updated their platform and pricing, so I just (24th May 2025) went in and checked if their formatter was still free to use. It is! You have to make a Reedsy account, or login with a Facebook or Gmail account. Additionally, there's lots of buttons suggesting their "paid features", which makes sense. However the formatter, and the ability to download your formatted manuscript either as a PDF (for Print Books aka Paperback or Hardcover) or an EPub (Ebooks) is still a free function. The only 'catch' to the Reedsy formatter is that, on the bottom of the Copyright Page, they will input something like "Formatted with Reedsy Free Formatter" or something along those lines. I don't remember exactly. I was on a bit of an ego trip when I was researching my debut novel, so that was a No-go for me and I saved up and paid for Atticus to format my books, but that's NOT budget friendly and runs about $147, but I digress. Once you HAVE a formatted Book File — and if it's a PDF for Paperback, you know how many pages your book will be, then next expense is going to be a Cover. You can make your own book cover, but unless you're (A) A graphic Designer and (B) have your thumb on the pulse of the book cover market in your genre, I wouldn't recommend it. What I would recommend is...
Getcover Design Services. Getcovers are a professional design company based in Ukraine, and they designed the cover for my Reader Magnet "Whatever Happened to Madeline Hail?" and my debut novel, "Changeling" (I'll put pictures of the covers below.) Getcovers has a sister company called Miblart, which charges a closer-to-market-average for their design services, although still cheaper than many designers. I have NO PROOF of the following statement, but I suspect the designers at Getcovers are new with the company, and being trained up, before they're moved over to Miblart. Again, I have no proof of this, it's only a suspicion on my part. And that's NOT to say I have any complaints over Getcovers quality. What I would say is that, being based in Ukraine, somethings a little bit of back and forth is required before the designer understands what you're looking for. (In one particularly memorable moment, I ended up doing a mockup in MSPaint, and that seemed to solve ALL communication issues lol) But, on the flip side, all of Getcovers cover design packages come with unlimited revisions, so as long as you have a bit of patience, they're well worth it. Which brings me to cost. Getcovers isn't free, of course, but in my humble opinion they might as well be. Getcovers will design an Ebook Only Cover for $10. They will design an Ebook & Paperback Cover for $20. They have a premium service, for detailed covers, which is a Ebook & Paperback for $35. If you want a Hardcover Design added on, that's an additional $10. It's not free, but you cannot buy a PREMADE cover for that price. It's a little bit insane. Getcovers over other design services as well, such as author branding (My author branding was developed by them as well), marketing materials, and merchandise design, but again, I digress.
Finally, uploading your files. You have self edited as best you can, you've formatted your book, and you have your cover files. Now, all that's left to do is upload the book for sale somewhere. This is, honestly, the easiest part. Draft2Digital is a free platform to upload your books. They are a distributor, which means they take a small cut of your royalties for doing all the labour of sending your book out to a dozen other storefronts, but for ease of use, and time saved, it's a negligable amount (10% if I remember correctly). KDP or Kindle Direct Publishing is basically Amazon. You CANNOT have more than ONE KDP account, so if you're not sure if you've made a KDP account before, I'd reach out to customer service and check if you have a KDP account linked to your Amazon account. They'll be happy to let you know if that's the case, before you try making a new account and end up in hot water. But, essentially, it's also free to upload your book to KDP. When it comes to your EBook on KDP you have a choice between exclusive and wide. If you want to upload your Ebook to other platforms like Draft2digital, you CANNOT put your Ebook into Kindle Unlimited (aka KU). This is because Amazon requires exclusive rights to your book, so if it's uploaded anywhere else, they'll kick up a fuss. I've never had my books in KU, I prefer to keep Changeling widely available so take this next part with a pinch of salt, but I THINK KU is a 90day rolling contract. So you can have your book in KU for 90 days, and then choose to go wide. It's more difficult to be Wide, and THEN go KU, because you have to pull your book from all storefronts and make sure it's not available anywhere before putting it back into KU. The only "Cost" of publishing on KDP is if you decide to have a paperback or hardcover book, and want them to print a physical proof copy. This is a recommended step to make sure the files all uploaded correctly, however it's not a requirement. And if you do decide to print a proof, it's not too expensive. I think Changeling, which is a 5.5x8.5 trim, 399 pages, usually costs me less than $12 If you decide to publish Wide, and no Exclusive to Amazon, then other storefronts I recommend uploading to directly, instead of through Draft2Digital are Barnes & Noble, Googlebooks, and Kobo. Itch.io is also free to upload to, and is beginning to pick up steam with Ebooks! You can also turn on tips, so people can choose to pay you more than the book price is set to. The only 'Downside' to Itch.io is that is has a minimum withdrawl cost, which I THINK is $10 before you can have it paid out to your paypal account. Again, I'm pulling those numbers from memory, so I might be off a little. But, essentially, you can publish an Ebook for as little as $10, and a paperback for as little as... what... $45? Tops? I know that's still a handful of cash, but it's much, much, more reasonable than initial research suggests when you start looking into it <3 I hope ANY of this helped!!
EDIT!! I forgot to add the covers for "Whatever Happened To Madeline Hail?" and "Changeling" for examples of Getcovers work!!
Whatever Happened To Madeline Hail is the reader magnet for my newsletter, so I only really needed an Ebook Cover. I could have just spent $10 on this, but I want to offer it as a paperback once the main trilogy is complete, so I decided to go for the full package $35. Mainly because I was VERY new and didn't know how many stock images the designer would need to bring my vision to life. In hindsight, and for future reader magnets, I'll probably settle with the $20 option.
Tumblr media
Changeling is the cover of my debut novel, and I've lost count of how many compliments I've gotten for it. I chose the $35 bracket for this cover design, and I actually ordered the entire trilogy all at once, so I also have books 2 and 3 covers matching.
Tumblr media
Since Changeling is available in Paperback and Hardcover, I paid an additional $10 for the Hardcover version, the picture below is the full wrap for the paperback...
Tumblr media
And for Xmas my Dad gave me the extra I needed for Getcovers to make custom Title Pages based on the cover design. I don't have a picture of that immediately to hand, as they're on my laptop, but a screenshot from inside of my ebook file looks like...

Fuck Grammarly
Tumblr media
Okay I need to rant about Grammarly. A program I never used before and never will now. Doubly pissed because their ads keep interrupting my peaceful 4-hour Minecraft music session with their fake-ass influencers.
Guys. Gals. Nonbinary pals.
“As a corporate girlie—” learn how to write a proper concise email.
“I used to spend hours proofreading—” enjoy the process, and then the product.
If you hate proofreading, to the point where you’ll consult a robot to do it all for you, then you hate writing. If all you care about is the end product, sorry to say but ‘writing’ is like, 30% of writing. The other 70% is editing, by design. You’re supposed to like it.
Of course I’d love to have beautiful artwork of whatever’s in my head, but I’m going to love whatever I make a whole lot more than whatever I type into some garbage generator. Because I love the process of creation.
Do I think editing is tedious as hell? Absolutely, but it’s still a tedium that I enjoy. I like fixing my mistakes, I like improving my sentence flow. I like thinking about patterns and connections that I didn’t see before and revising and reworking until I’m satisfied.
For the humdrum day to day work emails that some of us have to write—if you’re sending out whole essays to your coworkers that you need a robot to write for you, you’re doing it wrong. Corporate emails are boring and trite, but I can type out a “hey please do this thing for me” faster than I can load up ChatGPT or Grammarly, type out my prompt, make sure the result is what I actually want to say, and then send it to my coworker. If you can’t, learn.
Apparently, Grammarly used to be a helpful way to check for spelling and grammar errors. I don’t have any issue with the AI that runs spellchecker whatsoever. I type so fast and miss typos constantly and when the spellchecker is absent, like on this website, it’s annoying af.
But that’s not what Grammarly is about anymore, and that’s not what the above ad was trying to sell you, either.
You won’t get better if you don’t practice. You won’t get better if you aren’t the one making, seeing, and fixing your mistakes. Especially if you write fiction where grammar rules are a suggestion at best. My published novel is littered with flagged words and sentence fragments that I know are technically improper English, but I sacrificed an MLA-proof paper for something fun and entertaining.
AI does not understand nuance and flavor text and aesthetic choices. It never will.
If you train yourself by using a crutch you don’t need, you will end up needing it because you’ll be too afraid to act without it.
Fuck up. Make a mess. Make mistakes. You won’t make them for long once you see them. You do not need a robot to do it for you. We’ve been writing books for hundreds of years and all the authors who came before did it just fine without a robot.
This isn’t even about writing novels, it’s about communicating in the written medium. Fucking. Learn. It’s not rocket science, it’s not coding in C++, it’s not brain surgery. It’s stringing words together in a comprehensible sentence.
And obligatory disclaimer: To anyone who has an impairment and needs these tools, this is not about you and you know it.

Writing Notes: Police Procedural
Tumblr media
Police Procedural - a subgenre of detective fiction that focuses on police work and investigations.
This form of crime fiction is popular across a variety of mediums, including mystery novels, TV series, and films.
In police procedurals, the lead characters seek to solve a crime—most commonly a murder mystery.
Stories in this subgenre typically follow law enforcement officers or private investigators as they track down criminal suspects.
Depending on the detective story, the plot may revolve around crimes of passion or serial killers.
How to Write a Police Procedural
Research police protocols. To learn about proper police procedures, interview police officers and, if possible, go on a ride-along with your local police department. To avoid becoming overwhelmed with research, define the length of time you want to devote to this phase. Setting a timeline of a few weeks or months can help relieve the pressure of needing to know everything before you start writing.
Develop your main character. Determine whether your protagonist is a seasoned homicide detective or an amateur detective. Depending on the scope of your story, your main character may work with a local police force or a government agency like the FBI. Establishing a backstory will also help you determine their worldview and how they approach their work.
Choose a familiar setting. Police procedurals are deeply influenced by their specific settings. Choose a setting that you’re familiar with—whether rural, urban, or suburban—and use your knowledge of this place to infuse the world of your story with authenticity.
Outline a crime plot. Police procedurals are often plot-driven. Devise a complex and surprising crime to center your story around.
Define the tone. Although many police procedurals take a realistic and gritty approach with their tone, you can decide for yourself whether your story is best suited for comedic elements, dramatic elements, or a combination of both.
Write your first draft. Once you’ve laid out a plan for your police procedural, dive into your first draft. Avoid putting pressure on yourself to make it perfect and instead focus on simply finishing a rough draft.
Step away from your first draft. Once you’ve completed your first draft, take some time away from the work—ideally a few weeks—so you can return to it with fresh eyes.
Revise your draft. Try different approaches to self-editing to find one that works for you. For example, try printing out your script or novel or reading the work aloud. Once you have a shareable draft, consider sending it to a reader with knowledge of police procedures for feedback.
Examples of Police Procedurals
To learn more about police procedurals, explore some of these examples in TV and fiction.
Dublin Murder Squad (2007–2020) by Tana French: This book series follows various Irish detectives as they investigate harrowing murders.
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2000–2015): Over the course of 15 seasons, this iconic TV show followed a task force in Las Vegas dedicated to solving a wide variety of crimes. The series was so popular it prompted several spinoff shows including CSI: Miami and CSI: NY.
87th Precinct (1956–2005) by Evan Hunter: Influenced by the classic TV show Dragnet, Evan Hunter (who often wrote under the pen name Ed McBain) published this long-running book series that followed a group of detectives in New York City. The books were later adapted into a TV series.
Law & Order (1990–2010): Inspired by real-life crimes, each episode in this police procedural TV series follows both the police investigation and legal trial of a different case.
Bosch (2014–2021): Based on Michael Connelly’s bestsellers, this cop show follows a detective who works for the Hollywood Division of the LAPD.

Why didn't Lennon/McCartney get therapy for their issues?
As a family/couple therapist in my day job and mclennon obsessive at night, I want to correct some overly positive views I feel people on this site often have about therapy and its potential.
Therapy, like anything else, is the product of its environment and the social attitudes of its time. While I'd love to imagine 1969 John and Paul getting couples therapy and living happily ever after, sadly, I have a more jaded view of my profession. Homosexuality was identified as a mental disorder in the DSM 2 (published 1968). Although the wording of this was softened in 1974 to reflect social pressures put on the psychiatric profession by gay liberation groups (suddenly we queers became officially less mad than before!) the DSM 3 (published 1980) still classified "ego-dystonic homosexuality" as a mental illness. (The difference, practically speaking, is that people were no longer deemed as being mad for being gay on its own; they were only mad if living in a homophobic society made them feel sad about being gay. That was, according to the dsm, a problem of the individual, not society. If we take DSM-II (1974 revision) to its natural conclusion, a mentally normal homo in 1974 would simply have skipped along the street, delighting in receiving the punches of strangers and rejection of their close friends and families for their perverted ways; but anyone feeling sadness about how they were treated and maybe feeling bad about being gay as a result should have got therapy to make that problematic sadness go away.) Any therapist, individual or couple, valuing their licence in the late 60s/early 70s would be working within this framework within their profession, as well as the wider social and their own personal attitudes towards homosexuality and bisexuality.
There is also the constraint of the particular therapeutic training. Psychodynamic/psychoanalytic therapy, for example, wouldn't allow LGBTQ people to train as therapists even as late as 2000. I had my own therapy back then (from a nationally known, respectable institution) as a troubled bisexual adolescent, and my therapist kept trying to perform conversion therapy on me, which was technically unethical back in 2000 but many therapists at that time still persisted in these attitudes, feeling it was most ethical to try and cure their patients' mental illness by changing their homo ways (rather than wondering if it was, in fact, society that was sick rather than the individual queer). Luckily I had sufficient self belief, undiagnosed autism and general stroppiness (together with being backed up with the more positive social attitudes towards queers in 2000 when compared to 1970) to tell them to fuck off, but I doubt I would have been able to do that in 1970, even if I had happened to be a Beatle suffering from extreme internalised homophobia and self loathing, desperately wanting to be straight.
If I was a celebrity, I would also not want to chat my business with some random stranger for fear the therapist may try to sell my story. John, I think, might have been OK taking the risk, being the outspoken edgelord he was, but we could certainly rule out the more cautious Paul for this reason alone.
Under all these conditions, even if Lennon wasn't seeing quacks, I can't see how even my favourite 1970 therapist, Salvador Minuchin, could have helped Lennon or Lennon/McCartney with their issues at this time.
A therapist from today, with our revisionist eyes, would of course do things differently than those back then. But unfortunately, as far as I know, even the Beatles didn't have access to a time machine. Therefore, in my professional opinion, mclennon would not have been helped by 1970s therapy. Please understand that doesn't mean I think today's therapists are better than those practicing 60 years ago; I just think today's social attitudes towards LGBTQ people are better than they were 60 years ago. Currently. Let's see how Trump gets on with making America great again.
I think what it comes down to is that it just wasn't soon enough for John and Paul to stand on top of a mountain with their flag unfurled. So just standard mclennon tragedy things then.

The Fall 2024 Fanauthor Workshop is a 7-week writing course led by Betts (@bettsfic). The workshop lends a supportive space to writers who identify as fans to receive constructive feedback on fanfiction, original fiction, or creative nonfiction.
Art by @emimayooo 💖
Where & When
We meet weekly over Zoom. You can apply for one of two sessions:
Group A: Wednesdays from Oct. 9 - Nov. 20, 12-2pm EST
Group B: Mondays from Oct. 7 - Nov. 18, 6-8pm EST
What
FAW is a feedback-oriented workshop with the occasional generative session. This means that each week we read 2 pieces submitted by participants, offer written feedback, and discuss them over Zoom. You'll be able to sign up for the week you would like to workshop your own piece, which can be anything under 6k words.
There may be weeks where, in lieu of workshopping, I present external readings and writing exercises. These sessions will be dependent on the number of participants. For example, if we have 10 participants and 6 workshop weeks, that means one week will be devoted to a reading discussion and generative activity.
I developed a workshop model that focuses mostly on affirmations and positivity, as well as descriptive over prescriptive feedback, which is to say, describing one's experience of reading rather than prescribing solutions to perceived problems. We also present improvement-oriented feedback, but avoid negativity, judgment, and pedantry. Week 1 is spent going over the model and how to give feedback.
About FAW
The first FAW was held in 2017 as an independent study in my MFA. I restarted it in 2022 and since then have led 9 sessions with a total of over 50 participants, about half of whom have participated in the workshop more than once.
Participation in the workshop includes entrance into the FAW community, an active Discord server where we host:
Ongoing accountability meetings, where we chat over Zoom about our projects and set goals for ourselves every other week
A monthly longform writing workshop, where writers can workshop any story between 6k and 100k words
A short story club, where we read and chat about original short form works
Events and activities like movie nights and co-op gaming
Scheduled write-ins and impromptu writing sprints
We also chat about writing and craft, offer resources, and share many, many pet photos.
In addition, participants of the workshop receive:
A one-hour consultation with me to go over your workshop feedback, come up with a plan for revision and/or publication, or anything else you’d like to discuss regarding your writing
Open enrollment in future workshops
Priority sign-ups for WTFS (Write the Fucking Story), WIP Cleanout, and other one-off generative sessions
Eligibility
Anyone over the age of 18 who considers themselves a participant of fandom and who is familiar with fanfiction may apply. A stable internet connection is also required.
Cost
The cost of the workshop is "pay what you can" with the recommended amount of $300. To be as inclusive as possible, I don't want money to be a deterrent for anyone interested in participating.
Payment (or notification of nonpayment) will be requested prior to the start of workshop via PayPal, Venmo, or Wise. You can also pay in installments.
Application requirements
To apply, you will need:
An informal cover letter discussing your fan history and goals as a (fan)writer (more specific instructions on submittable)
A short sample of your writing, either original work or fanfiction. This may be previously published/posted
You can apply via submittable. Applications close September 15.
FAQ under the cut
FAQ
Are there any content restrictions to what I can workshop?
The only restriction is word count (max 6k), with the following caveats:
If you workshop a piece in a form other than prose (for example, a script), your peers may not be able to offer constructive feedback on that aspect of the work. Participants are asked only to have a familiarity with prose.
Content warnings are required for each piece (if applicable), and participants who are uncomfortable reading certain subject matter may abstain from your workshop.
What is the time commitment of the workshop?
As a participant of the workshop, you'll be asked to:
Workshop any piece of your own prose up to 6k words, which will need to be uploaded to the group folder one week before your workshop.
Read 2 pieces per week, write out your individual crit, and attend the workshop itself.
What is the timeline of the workshop?
In week 1, we go over the syllabus and do a writing exercise. Weeks 2 through 7 will be a workshop, a discussion of an external reading, or a writing activity. Prior to the start of workshop, you'll be able to sign up for the week you would like to workshop your piece.
Structure of the sessions:
Question of the day
First workshop
Short break
Second workshop
We'll go over my workshop model and the syllabus in week 1.
Do I have to participate in the Zoom meetings (camera and mic on)?
Attending the workshop itself is required, and everyone is asked to offer at least one note of positive feedback on each piece, so mics are necessary. Cameras are preferred but not required.
You can't asynchronously participate, i.e. read the pieces and offer written feedback without attending the sessions.
Can workshop participants submit to OFIC Magazine?
Yes! Part of the reason I run the workshop is to inspire and promote the original work of fanwriters. You can follow us on tumblr @oficmag.
Who is running the workshop?
@bettsfic! In short, I lived a dreary cubicle life as a banker until I found fanfiction at 24. I loved it so much that I quit my job to get an MFA in creative writing. I loved the MFA so much that I became a writing teacher. I have some publications, awards, an agent, and 2 million words of fic on ao3. I don't have a book out yet but I'm getting there.
Currently I'm a writing coach and freelance editor. I also have a lowkey writing-related newsletter. And I've been answering writing advice asks on my blog for 10 years.
If you want an idea of the kind of writing activities I create, last summer I worked with @books on a workshop series which includes craft essays and some fun prompts.
If you're interested in my original work, my short story "Not If, When" is a good representation of my writing. For something darker, check out "Shut Up and Kill Me."
What is the workshop like?
Check out G's experience of attending the workshop. And here's some feedback from previous participants.
One final note: I'm working on updating the copy about the workshop on my website and move it over to OFIC's website. This post and Submittable has the most updated information on the workshop. If you have questions about discrepancies (or anything at all), you can shoot me an ask, DM me, or add me on Discord (I'm bettsfic there too). Or you can email me at [email protected].
