Fall 2024 Behind-the-Scenes Reading
My Fall behind the scenes reading this year is very much a look a my main research project for this semester, which was on Inuit voices in the Arctic.
You’ll have to forgive this not having a picture. I am in California visiting family and therefore away from all the books I read and the end of my semester was such a mess that I didn’t have the opportunity to do a book photoshoot then. To be fair, a lot of these readings are academic articles, which might make for a boring header image. Once I’m home from California, I’ll see about getting a…

Are you the "I have strong feelings about parchment" Tumblr user? If not, I feel like I saw you might know who they are. I was going to put parchment in a fic, but then I was like "no, I can't do that without asking the Parchment Person first because I don't want to get it Wrong."
...no, but I know the post you're talking about, and I too have strong feelings about parchment, esp because I've worked on it before.
I took an illumination course while getting my illustration degree and did an "H.M." in the style of a medieval manuscript on a small piece of the stuff.
Parchment is not paper. It's cured calf or pig skin.
It's thick, and HARD like non-corrugated cardboard. If it's been stored in a roll, it does not want to unroll. If it's been stored flat, it does not want to roll. It's got the same texture as skin, because it IS skin, and you have to account for that while working on it. It smells like rawhide. It actually takes ink in a really interesting way- there's a half-second to blend of fix something before it actually sinks into the parchment, but it doesn't bleed once it's in there. It also never comes back out. It's not bright white like paper, almost a buff color, and white stands out on it.
Fascinating stuff. Actually pretty fun to work on, but it's definitely a medium for highly polished and important pieces (like illuminated manuscripts), not for casual note-taking (because it's MAD EXPENSIVE to make)
I should go hit up the local art stores and get different paper-and-other-art-media samples to demo for everyone for fanfic purposes because they are VERY different things that have different purposes, prices, origins, and societal connotations, all of which can be used in your writing.

Lovestruck
Azriel x Reader, Eris being nice, Also Eris being a little shit
Summary: You pose as Eris’s date for a reconnaissance mission into the Autumn Court’s markets. Things take a surprise turn for the worst at an apothecary stand

This mission was already a disaster before it even happened.
A reconnaissance mission between Azriel, Eris, and you - Azriel’s trusted second - to assess early options for dispatching the Autumn heir’s father.
Part of that mission was feeling out Autumn’s very seedy underbelly without tipping off the High Lord or those loyal to him.
You were perfect for this, often doing the jobs Azriel couldn’t thanks to his notoriety. That and being a master of illusory disguises, it was a no brainer to bring you along. Even if your spymaster was not a fan of the strategy the three of you had elected to use.
You, glamoured into an Autumn Court native, were playing date to the High Lord’s son. None of you were particularly pleased with the notion, but it was a good idea for keeping intentions secret. Eris would play at showing you around, falling into proper courtship rules - no touching - and if any gossip got out it would be easily squashed and of a different nature entirely to what was actually happening. Bonus, no one would know who you really were or where you were from. Perfect.
Azriel was grinding his teeth about it though. He was not walking behind you both as you flitted about the market squares of Autumn as the day slowly came to a close. But, something about the shadows around the golden hour autumnal market felt agitated, irritable. Like someone you knew was nearby and clearly not happy.
“How can you stand working with him?” Eris said with a chuckle in your ear, playing at being the slightly irreverent courting male.
You smiled and giggled, an act, as you whispered under your breath, “Now hardly seems the place to discuss what I actually do for a living. And you’re no prize, Eris.”
“You wound me, my lady,” Eris teased.
A million comments were poised on the tip of your tongue, but you held them all, focusing on the topic at hand.
You tugged Eris’s hand to stop him as you paused at an apothecary type vendor, expecting the wares. You pointed to a few bottles then whispered to Eris, “Poisons are always a viable option. They seem like this court’s style.”
Eris smiled and wrapped an arm around you, whispering back, “The Night Court doesn’t regularly check what’s in their food?”
Bastard.
Your smile fell just slightly portraying the ghost of the glare you wanted to give him. Only Eris noticed.
“I’ve already thought of that, if it would have worked, all of my brothers and I would have tried it.”
The sun had all but set by now, dim faelights filling iron lampposts around the grounds, creating only small pools of light every few feet. Not the most illuminating, but perfect for the rest of your evening’s purposes.
“We should move on,” you whispered, painting on your smile, looking away to feign embarrassment at whatever you hoped the onlookers thought Eris had said to you.
You began to walk away when the vendor called out, “sample for the lady?”
You smiled, shaking your head politely as the apothecary held up a perfume bottle. “No thank you-“
The vendor’s smile turned oily and wicked, “no, really, I insist… Such a lovely couple you two will make…”
A sweet smelling mist pelted you in the face, overwhelming your senses. Eris sidestepped the plume of perfume, eyes wide as you had no choice but to inhale whatever had been sprayed in your face.
Even worse, your disguise was fading.
Eris moved quickly, grabbing you and pulling you out and away from that vendor into one of the shadowy alcoves of the market.
You were lightheaded, you didn’t know what had happened to you but there was a disorienting want within you. You wanted… You wanted something… someone…
Eris shook you a little, calling your name and pulling your chin up to face him. Your eyes locked on his and that want did not dissipate. You wanted someone, but that someone was not Eris and you were terrified.
You struggled and pushed against him, trying to get up, get out, get away. Flee to wherever that someone you wanted was.
Eris swore and held you down as best he could without scaring you further. You called out to the shadows around him. Moving you, as much as he wanted to, was not an option right now.
Azriel materialized from the shadows almost immediately. He surveyed the situation quickly. He detested Eris holding you like this but saw no other option to keep you from clawing at the both of them.
He stalked forward and cupped his hand around your cheek - the only part of your body he could reach on Eris’s other side. He called your name and hushed you until you looked at him.
You were terrified, a prey animal clawing for its life. That is… until you looked up and saw Azriel’s face.
Everything in the world focused in on one point. Him.
You couldn’t see anything else but the hazel of his eyes, the swoop of his hair. Couldn’t hear anything else besides his night chilled voice.
The male you were wholly and completely in love with.
Your boss, sure. Not really professional, but, for whatever reason, the thought process you usually ran down to keep yourself from pursuing him just… didn’t occur to you.
“Are you alright?” Azriel asked you, voice velvet soft.
Unthinking, you blurted, “I am now.”
Azriel’s eyes widened as Eris swore again, looking back in the direction you’d come.
Azriel watched you closely, unmoving. Whatever Eris did you either didn’t notice or didn’t care.
“We’re gonna figure this out, okay? Don’t worry,” he told you in that soft, comforting voice you loved so much.
“Not worried,” you whispered, leaning into his touch, practically purring as you closed your eyes.
“Love potion?” Azriel whispered in Eris’s direction.
“Looks like it,” Eris responded.
“I’m the first she saw?” Azriel asked for confirmation.
Despite the situation, Eris finally seemed amused. He smirked as he said, “No. She saw me first.”
Azriel’s brain, for once, was having a hard time putting the pieces together. He looked between Eris’s ever growing smirk and your lovesick behavior. You had practically melted into his hand where it still grasped your cheek.
But if… But if you saw Eris first… And had still reacted the way you had… Dazed, confused and disoriented… Until he crossed your field of vision…
“Shadowsinger,” Eris said, still smug, “now may be a good time to get her someplace safe. We can continue later. You seem to be-“ Eris feigned waffling for the right phrase- “indisposed.”
Azriel growled at him, coaxing your eyes open and up to him. You looked worried as you asked him, “What’s wrong?”
Eris had the audacity to laugh, but he didn’t leave. He watched the area around you all, Azriel realizing he was watching out specifically for the two of you. Until the two of you were out.
“Go,” he said, “I’ll clean up whatever mess is left.”
Azriel nodded to him before dropping fully into your vision. He sent you a comforting look, immediately calming you back into your dreamy state.
“We’ve got to go home now, okay? I’m going to winnow us, is that okay?”
You nodded.
“Words, please.”
“That’s fine,” you responded softly, “I trust you.”
Azriel didn’t doubt it, but he did doubt that even if you didn’t you would have much choice.
“Okay,” he said, a small shake coming into his voice as he held you.
The way you grasped onto him, nothing but unadulterated love in your eyes, had him winnowing you both without even a glance at Eris.
Once the two of you were back in Velaris, Azriel had been determined to drop you off and let you ride out the effects. He’d talk to you about in the morning, hopefully when whatever potion this was wore off.
You were not having that. Every time he attempted to separate from you, you either just followed after him like a dog or got such a sad look on your face that you practically cracked his heart in half. He had little options left.
You woke up with a far clearer head than you remembered going to bed with. Not that you remembered much of the previous night in the first place.
You shook your head to clear it and glanced around. You were in a large bed, held close by… strong arms and draped in familiar membranous wings…
Panic overwhelmed you as you pushed away from Azriel in an attempt to flee whatever this situation had been.
But, Azriel’s hand shot out and gently grasped your wrist. “Wait.”
You stopped.
Azriel, fully clothed sat up in bed and looked at you. He waited for you to wake up more fully, to realize you were still fully clothed as well.
When you seemed a bit more calm, he asked you, “what do you know about love potions?”
Oh. Oh no. Oh Mother save you.
Memories of the mission, and exactly when and why it went wrong ripped through your mind. You remembered every thing you did, everything you thankfully didn’t do, and every little lovesick thought you’d had In Azriel’s presence.
Unfortunately, they weren’t too different from the things you already thought. Amplified maybe, but certainly nothing new.
“Azriel, I am so sorry. I didn’t… I couldn’t… It absolutely will not happen again I-“
Azriel squeezed your hand, halting your motor mouth speech.
“You saw Eris first,” he said, a bland statement of fact.
“Yes,” you responded.
“That means what I think it means, right?”
You couldn’t discern the emotion leaking into his face.
False. You could. You just couldn’t accept it.
“I’m so sorry,” you said again, “it was unprofessional of me. Had I not been under the influence of something I never would have-“
Azriel’s cool mask fully dropped and shifted into something dangerously close to desperation until he finally surged forward and kissed you, slow, passionate and full of at least a centuries worth of longing.
It was everything you had ever hoped it would be in that secret place of your heart.
When you finally, regrettably, separated for air, Azriel rested his forehead against yours. As if he needed to be as close to you as possible or he would cease to be.
“How…” he said through his panting, “How’s that… for professional?”
You laughed weakly. “Does that mean what I think it means?” you echoed.
“Yes,” he breathed, not waiting too long before kissing you again.
Your morning devolved into nothing but the two of you kissing and reveling in the other’s presence.
You finally went to the kitchen and it was there that you finally engaged in a debrief of sorts from yesterday. It was stranger than any you had ever done with him before. In the kitchen of his private residence, him still holding onto you, kissing the crown of your head, drinking a coffee he made you out of one of his mugs.
Strange, but most assuredly welcome.
“Eris took care of that vendor after we left. He was trying to ensure the heir and his date stayed together, trying to then sell that information to Beron. Eris sent a message not long after I coaxed you to sleep.”
You laughed a little at the soft tone he used and at him anticipating your question before you asked it.
“Maybe,” you said into the rim of your mug, “we should have thanked him instead.”
Azriel smiled but said, “not funny.”
“I think it’s pretty funny.”
You’d always kept as many personal details out of your discussions as you could. You two had been friendly before, but there was always this unspoken barrier between you. At your mention of finding something funny, Azriel’s eyes lit up.
“I can’t wait to find out everything about you,” Azriel said, “starting with that sense of humor.”
You hummed and met him when his lips came down to kiss you again. Perfectly content.

vulcanalia lucius verus x f!reader x marcus acacius

a/n: yeah i honestly don't know what this is - i got dragged in by beautiful gif sets and horny thoughts and peer pressure (thanks @juletheghoul). just a little thing to get them out of my system before work. this was co-written with my vagina. enjoy. word count: 627 warnings: SMUT 18+ ONLY: rough unprotected p in v, exhibitionism, creampie, cum eating, a smidgen of a breeding kink somewhere in there, mention of f rec oral, an absolute mess of a drabble tbh
They can hear your cries, you’re sure of it. You lack the strength to do anything about it, lack the concern or embarrassment. Behind the fire biting at your flesh and the threat of ecstasy lingering just within reach, you feel the force from which they’re torn from you. You hold no hope against such power, such fury.
He’s unyielding.
Bruising hands, bloodied from victory, fingers dug deep into the flesh of your hips to ensure your body escapes none of his thrusts. You’re gladly at the gladiator’s full mercy, knees burning and arms shaking, left with nothing but to skate your hands over crumpled linens in search of stability and endure.
Lucius runs a roughened hand across your shoulder, thick calloused fingers winding around your throat and pulling until you’re curling back into his touch, rising back into the heat of his sweat slicked chest and displaying your victory of taking him so well—a showcase to the other man present in the room, lounging against plush cushions and illuminated by warm candlelight.
The General.
He had taken his fill of you already, always the first to claim you upon arrival. His own personal reward, his right. Though he used a softer touch than that of the gladiator, it was to never be mistaken for weakness. Strength, control, lingers behind the hands he uses to strip you, to pin your thighs open at his mercy and to beckon your pleasure forward with an expert touch.
Unlike the gladiator, he prefers to feel the hot press of your chest against his own as he fills you again and again, thick cock rutting so deeply into your weeping cunt you swear you feel him hit places unknown to you.
Caged between the arms that carry the weight of the entire army, you’re left with nowhere to hide. He sees all, eyes roaming your face as you meet your end over and over, relentless in his pursuit of more until tears begin to spring in your eyes and his name is nothing but a broken plea on your lips.
Only when he decides you’ve had enough does he allow himself to fill you, hips so tight up against your own as his cock twitches and pulses within you, flooding your cunt with spend until he feels it begin to seep out from around him. Perhaps one day you’d sire a child, his child. The triumph of his efforts, the success of truly claiming you before the gladiator.
Lucius feels the remnants of the General as he fucks into you, the silky smooth feel of it hot where it mingles with your own pleasure coating his cock and wetting his thighs. The taste of you both still lingers on his tongue, still sits heavy and wet within his facial hair from how he devoured you once Marcus was through with you, his mouth eager and open against your cunt as you cried and rocked against his face until finding starlight.
More.
With your back pressed against his chest, he allows his hands to roam down until he feels where his cock stretches you, running teasingly over the swollen nerve that causes you to jolt in his arms before swiping through the mess and soaking his fingers. You know what he wants, and your lips part before he can even make the demand of it.
You taste it all—the victory of battle, ecstasy that could rival the Heavens. Lucius chases it, fingers hard around your chin as he twists you to meet his mouth. He steals what he can, tongue hot and demanding against yours until he’s breaking away with a low groan, ocean eyes soon finding the ever watchful ones across the room.
“Care for a sample of your work, General?”

“okay, baby” tyler begins, shutting the back door on the passenger side of his truck. “we’re headin out”
he turns around to face you, his hands resting on your hips. you frown as you drape your arms over his shoulders. “m’gonna miss you” you say. tyler smiles, “i’ll be back, promise” he said, then leaned in to press a soft kiss on your lips. “always come back to you” he says in between the kiss.
“m’gonna go to the farmers market later, call me when yer comin home. kay?” your hands intertwined with the hair on the naps of his neck.
“mhm” he hums, leaning in to kiss you again. his arms snaking around your waist, pulling you closer.
you giggle in between the kisses, his hands squeeze your ass in a playful manner. “ty!” you pull away, face red.
“what? can’t i show a little appreciation?” he teases, raising his eyebrows. you shake your head, “you’re something else.”
“you be safe, kay?” tyler asks, and you nod. “i always am, babe.” you assure with a peck on his cheek.
“don’t keep the crew waitin.”
the small town was bustling with activity as the farmers market was in full swing. the town square was filled with stands selling fresh produce, handcrafted goods, and home-cooked food.
farmers and merchants from neighboring towns had set up stands to sell their goods. the air was filled with the sound of people bartering and chatting with each other.
children squealed and ran around, playing games and sampling treats from the vendors. the small town was a picturesque scene of rural life on a beautiful spring day.
but, it changed in an instant.
the fierce winds howled like an angry beast as the destructive tornado ripped through the town, leaving a path of destruction and chaos in its wake. the twister tore through buildings, uprooted trees, and sent debris flying through the air.
amidst the chaos, you found ducked into the theater as the tornado roared towards the town. the doors slammed shut behind you, cutting you off from the outside world. you looked around, seeing people huddled together, kids crying, and people crying and screaming.
the only light coming from the emergency lights that faintly illuminated the aisles. as the wind howled outside, you could hear the windows of the theater crack and break, and the sound of chairs and other objects being tossed about.
in the distance, you could hear the sound of people calling out names, no doubt other people who had sought shelter in the theater.
the stormed roared like some sort of beast, ripping the foundations from the theater.
it was truly a horrific sight, people were getting swept away from their loved ones. ear piercing screams and wailing accompanied the roaring storm.
you watched the scene unfold, unsure if you’d be walking out of there alive. you peer your head above one of the theater seats and watch as the wall was ripped away, swallowed by the storm.
“oh, mygod..” you breathe and hunker back down and cover your head with your arms. just like tyler had taught you to do.
tyler finally arrived in the midst of a chaotic situation. he knew you were somewhere nearby. despite the chaos and danger all around, his focus was on only one thing: finding you.
he navigated through the debris-filled streets, scanning the surroundings for any sign of you.
the roaring wind and ominous darkness made it difficult to see anything clearly, but he pushed forward, determined to find you.
tyler knew he was too late, the town was almost flattened. trees uprooted, buildings gone, debris littered the streets.
he hopped out of his truck, the crew following behind him to help the people who fell victim to the storm.
“y/n?!” he hollers, watching people slowly emerge from the rubble.
“baby?!”
tyler finally spotted you walking out of what once was the theater. you look around, your face smeared with dirt and clothes torn, shivering slightly as you tried to regain your composure.
you look around the state of the city, hugging yourself and sniffling.
as he made his way towards you, he couldn't help but feel a wave of relief wash over him. you looked up at him as he approached, and hour eyes widened in recognition before you stood up, launching yourself into his arms.
“oh, thank god.” he breaths, wrapping his arms around you. “you okay?” he pulls back to push some hair from your face to examine for any injuries.
“m’fine..” you nod. your eyes begin to water as you look up at him. “there was no warning..”
“i know, i know” he hushes your worries and pulls you back to your chest. “it’s okay, you’re okay now” he runs his fingers through your hair, swaying you two back and forth.
“we’ll get you checked out and then go home, kay?” he suggests and you nod. “mmkay.”

ditched and delirious
SYNOPSIS: deserted by your friends in the chilling haunted house, you bump into yeonjun, another soul stranded in the same spooky predicament.
彡 pairing: stranger!yeonjun x reader 彡 genre: crack, fluff 彡 warnings: jumpscares & a lil romantic tension ;)
SEUL SPEAKS! this is based on something that actually happened to me except i never got my candied apples so im turning my trauma into purpose !!
halloween had always been a magical time for you. ever since you were a child, the arrival of october brought an unparalleled sense of excitement and anticipation. the crisp autumn air, filled with the scent of fallen leaves and pumpkin spice, made everything feel more vibrant and alive. you loved how the world transformed, embracing the whimsical and the spooky with equal enthusiasm.
each year, you meticulously planned your halloween costume, often starting weeks in advance. you enjoyed every step of the process, from brainstorming ideas to putting the finishing touches on your outfit. the creativity and imagination that halloween inspired were unmatched by any other holiday. the colorful costumes, from classic witches and vampires to more unique and creative characters, always fascinated you. walking down the streets and seeing the array of costumes made you feel like you were part of a grand, fantastical story.
this year was no different. you had been looking forward to halloween for months, and your friends had been buzzing with excitement about the new amusement park that had recently opened in town. the park promised an unforgettable experience with its elaborate halloween decorations, spooky attractions, and, most notably, the scariest haunted house in the area. despite your initial reservations about haunted houses, your friends' infectious enthusiasm was hard to resist.
the amusement park was a sight to behold. as you and your friends entered, you were greeted by towering scarecrows, giant inflatable pumpkins, and cobwebs that seemed to stretch endlessly. the air was filled with the sound of eerie music and the occasional scream from one of the haunted attractions. everywhere you looked, there were people dressed in costumes, their faces lit up with excitement and anticipation.
your group had arrived early in the afternoon to make the most of the day. you rode roller coasters that twisted and turned, leaving your heart racing and your adrenaline pumping. the feeling of the wind in your hair and the weightless drops made you scream and laugh in equal measure. between the rides, you indulged in the array of carnival food. you couldn't resist the smell of freshly made funnel cakes, and you and your friends shared cotton candy and funnel cakes, making sure to sample a little bit of everything.
the games were another highlight of the day. you tried your hand at the ring toss, aimed for the highest score at the shooting gallery, and even managed to win a small stuffed ghost at the balloon dart game. each victory, no matter how small, was celebrated with cheers and high fives. the carefree fun of the amusement park made you forget your initial hesitations about the haunted house.
as the sun began to set, the park transformed. the cheerful, bright atmosphere of the day gave way to a more mysterious and eerie vibe. strings of orange and purple lights illuminated the pathways, casting a haunting glow. fog machines created an otherworldly mist that floated around your feet, and the sound of distant, ghostly laughter echoed through the air.
the anticipation for the haunted house grew with each passing hour. your friends couldn't stop talking about it, sharing stories of previous haunted house experiences and speculating about what horrors awaited inside. they showed you pictures from the amusement park's website, showcasing the elaborate and terrifying decorations that awaited you.
by the time you made your way to the entrance of the haunted house, the sky was dark, and the moon hung high, casting a pale light over the park. the haunted house stood before you, a massive, decrepit mansion with eerie lights flickering in the windows and fog rolling down the steps. the intricate decorations were both impressive and terrifying, creating an atmosphere that sent a shiver down your spine.
"are we really doing this?" you asked, trying to sound braver than you felt.
"come on, it'll be fun!" one of your friends said, giving you a reassuring nudge. you noticed the mischievous glint in their eyes but brushed it off, thinking they were just excited. they had been talking about this haunted house for weeks, hyping it up with stories of how terrifying and thrilling it was supposed to be. you tried to feed off their enthusiasm, but the knot of anxiety in your stomach only tightened.
as you took a tentative step forward, the creaking of the gate made you jump. your friends laughed, their faces lit up with excitement and anticipation. you forced a smile, hoping to mirror their bravery, but inside, you were already regretting your decision. the ticket taker at the entrance, dressed in tattered victorian clothing and sporting a disturbingly realistic ghostly pallor, handed you your tickets with a sinister grin.
"enjoy your stay," he said in a low, gravelly voice that sent chills down your spine.
with a deep breath, you stepped inside. the moment you crossed the threshold, the temperature seemed to drop, and the atmosphere became even more oppressive. the sound of creaking doors and distant screams filled the air, creating an unsettling symphony of terror. dim, flickering lights barely illuminated the narrow, winding corridors, casting long, eerie shadows that danced on the walls.
you clung to your friends, trying to steady your nerves. every corner seemed to hold a new horror, from ghastly apparitions that materialized out of thin air to grotesque figures that lunged at you from hidden alcoves. the haunted house was a labyrinth of terror, with each turn bringing fresh waves of fear. the animatronics were disturbingly lifelike, their movements jerky and unnatural, their eyes following you with a malevolent gleam.
as you navigated through the dark, narrow hallways filled with jump scares and creepy animatronics, you realized something alarming: your friends were nowhere to be found. panic set in as you spun around, calling out their names, but the only response was the echo of your voice and the occasional sinister laugh from the haunted house's speakers. your heart pounded in your chest, and you felt the walls closing in. alone in the haunted house, every shadow seemed to move, and every sound made you jump.
the narrow hallway you found yourself in was lined with portraits whose eyes seemed to follow your every move. the floorboards creaked ominously underfoot, and the walls seemed to close in with each step you took. you turned a corner and found yourself face-to-face with a mirror. in the dim light, your reflection appeared ghostly and distorted. a flicker of movement behind you made you whirl around, but there was nothing there.
"guys? this isn't funny!" you called out, your voice echoing back at you. a cold sweat trickled down your back as the realization set in that your friends had deliberately left you alone as part of a prank. the mischievous glint in their eyes earlier suddenly made sense, and you felt a mix of fear and anger. you were stuck in a nightmare, and your friends were nowhere to be found.
you tried to retrace your steps, but the layout of the haunted house was disorienting. every hallway looked the same, and the constant barrage of scares kept you on edge. a mechanical zombie lunged out of the darkness, its eyes glowing a sickly green. you stumbled back, your heart racing, and took a wrong turn into a room filled with fog.
the fog was thick, swirling around your ankles and making it difficult to see more than a few feet ahead. the room was eerily quiet, the only sound the soft whisper of the fog machine. you moved cautiously, every sense on high alert. the fog seemed to part just enough to reveal a path, and you followed it, hoping it would lead you to an exit or at least a familiar part of the house.
as you navigated through the fog-filled room, you felt a growing sense of unease. shadows moved at the edge of your vision, and you couldn't shake the feeling that you were being watched. you heard a faint, rhythmic tapping, like fingernails on glass, and your nerves frayed further. you moved faster, desperate to find your way out of this nightmare.
suddenly, you bumped into someone, and you screamed. the impact sent you stumbling back, and you barely managed to catch yourself before falling. your heart raced as you spun around to face whoever you had collided with.
standing there, looking just as startled as you felt, was a tall, handsome guy with dark hair and wide, frightened eyes. despite the spooky atmosphere, his presence was more comforting than anything else in the haunted house.
"oh my god, i'm so sorry!" you exclaimed, your voice trembling. "i didn't see you there."
"it's okay," he replied, his voice just as shaky. "i wasn't expecting to run into anyone either."
you both stood there for a moment, catching your breath. the dim light and swirling fog made it difficult to see clearly, but you could tell that he was just as scared as you were.
"i'm y/n," you said, trying to break the tension. "are you here alone too?"
"yeah, my friends thought it would be funny to ditch me," he replied with a nervous laugh. "i'm yeonjun, by the way."
"nice to meet you, yeonjun," you said, managing a small smile. "i guess we're both in the same boat then."
yeonjun nodded, his expression softening. "it seems that way. how about we stick together? it might be less terrifying if we're not alone."
you agreed, feeling a bit of the tension ease. having someone with you, even a stranger, made the haunted house seem a little less menacing. as you started to move through the fog-filled room together, you felt a sense of camaraderie forming.
"have you been through one of these before?" yeonjun asked, his voice breaking the silence.
"not one this intense," you admitted. "i've always liked halloween, but haunted houses have never been my thing. what about you?"
"same here," yeonjun said. "i usually avoid them, but my friends convinced me this time. i didn't think they'd actually leave me here alone."
"me neither," you said, shaking your head. "i thought it was just going to be a fun night out."
you both laughed, the sound a welcome relief from the constant tension of the haunted house. as you continued to talk, you felt yourself relaxing a bit more. yeonjun's presence was comforting, and the conversation helped to distract you from the scares lurking around every corner.
just as you started to feel a bit more at ease, a loud bang echoed through the room, followed by a figure lunging out of the darkness. you screamed and instinctively threw yourself at yeonjun. he yelped in surprise, his arms wrapping around you protectively.
for a moment, you both stood there, clinging to each other, hearts racing. then you realized that the figure was just another animatronic, and you couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of it all.
"you scared me more than that clown!" yeonjun said, trying to catch his breath.
"i could say the same about you!" you replied, still giggling.
the shared scare broke the ice completely. as you continued, you noticed that yeonjun, despite his initial fear, was trying his best to be brave for you. his attempts at bravery were endearing, and you felt a growing fondness for him.
the haunted house continued to challenge your nerves with more intense scares and intricate scenes. at one point, you found yourselves in a room filled with eerie whispers and dim candlelight. yeonjun took your hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze.
"just a little longer," he said softly.
as you cautiously moved forward, the floor suddenly erupted with the sound of firecrackers being stepped on. startled, both of you began jumping around in panic, but each step only caused more firecrackers to go off. the room echoed with the cracking sounds, creating a chaotic symphony that made it hard to think straight.
"fuck!" you screamed, trying to find a safe spot to stand, but the relentless popping continued.
"watch out!" yeonjun shouted, but it was too late. both of you stumbled over your feet, finally collapsing onto the ground and catching your breath. lying there, you couldn’t help but laugh at the situation's absurdity, the initial fear giving way to a sense of shared relief.
the next room plunged you into suffocating darkness. a sound, like nails scraping bone, skittered across the floor. yeonjun's grip on your hand tightened, his fingers digging into your palm. you shuffled forward, your fear a distant echo compared to the cold dread radiating off him.
suddenly, a figure lunged at you from the shadows, and you both screamed in unison, clutching onto each other in a moment of pure terror.
yeonjun's reaction was immediate and instinctive. without thinking, he pulled you in front of him, using you as a shield against the approaching figure. his heart pounded wildly against your back as he pressed you protectively against himself, his whole body trembling with fear.
you could feel his ragged breath against your neck, and it matched the frantic rhythm of your own heartbeat. the figure hesitated, realizing the scare had backfired, and retreated into the darkness, leaving behind an eerie silence.
for a moment, you both stood frozen, the adrenaline still coursing through your veins. then, with shaky breaths, you turned to face each other in the dim light filtering through the fog.
"sorry," yeonjun muttered, his voice barely audible. "i... i panicked."
"it's okay," you assured him softly, turning to face him with a comforting smile despite the lingering fear.
you took a few deep breaths to steady your nerves before cautiously continuing through the haunted house.
"you know," yeonjun said, trying to lighten the mood, "if we survive this, we should definitely get some candied apples together."
"i'd like that," you replied, smiling despite the lingering fear.
as you walked out of the haunted house hand in hand, relieved to be out of the terrifying atmosphere, you noticed your friends waiting eagerly outside. their faces lit up with anticipation, ready to catch your reaction to the scare fest they had orchestrated.
instead, their expressions turned from anticipation to utter bafflement as they watched you and yeonjun approach, hands intertwined. you could practically see the question marks forming over their heads as they exchanged confused glances.
"hey, guys," you greeted them casually, trying to ignore their bewildered stares. "meet yeonjun. we... uh, ran into each other inside."
yeonjun smiled warmly at your friends, his hand still firmly clasped in yours. "nice to meet you all."
your friends managed awkward hellos in response, still processing the unexpected turn of events. they had planned to prank you, not witness you leaving the haunted house hand in hand with a guy you had just met inside.
"we were just about to head over to the carnival games," one of your friends finally managed to say, trying to break the awkward silence. they shot you a playful grin, eyebrows raised suggestively.
"yeah, come join us," another friend chimed in hastily, shooting you a curious glance. "or are you two planning to haunt the rest of the park together?"
you chuckled nervously, feeling the heat rise in your cheeks. glancing at yeonjun, you couldn't help but ask, "what about your friends?"
yeonjun shrugged nonchalantly, a mischievous glint in his eye. "man, forget them," he replied with a grin. "they ditched me back there in that house."
your friends exchanged surprised glances, not expecting such a blunt response. "looks like you're stuck with her now!" one of them teased with a laugh.
"we'll be by the carousel if you need us," another friend chimed in playfully, "just one call away!"
as your friends started walking away, you and yeonjun started walking toward the direction of the candied apples stand, and you heard your friends' laughter trailing behind you.
"so, about those apples?" yeonjun nudged you gently, a playful glint in his eyes.
you chuckled, feeling a surge of excitement at the thought of spending more time with him. "lead the way."
with each step, hand in hand, you and yeonjun continued down the path illuminated by twinkling halloween lights, anticipating a cozy and memorable end to your adventurous night.

Hello! I saw a recent post of yours where you mentioned asks were opened! I’d like to request a Dan Heng x Reader (fem preferably), where the Express stops at the reader’s home world to attend a festival for a much needed break. Reader is a gentle, yet playful soul who was raised with a somewhat proper upbringing- but they do not often voice their feelings out of fear of coming off selfish. There is some unspoken, quiet, mutual pining between Dan Heng and the reader and March and the Trailblazer conspire to send them off on a little “date” as a small nudge. They tell the reader and Dan Heng to meet them at a certain location- only for Dan Heng and the reader to be the only ones who show up. After waiting for a while, they both end up spending the whole event together… Maaaaaybe even getting a bit closer?
Between the Lanterns and Us
Summary: During a festival on your homeworld, March and the Trailblazer conspire to set you and Dan Heng up for a quiet evening together. Though initially caught off guard, the two of you end up spending the night exploring the festivities, growing closer through shared moments of understanding and quiet companionship. Unspoken feelings linger in the air, and while neither of you voice them just yet, the night marks a step toward something more.

The city was alight with lanterns, their soft glow illuminating the winding streets as laughter and music filled the air. Tonight was a night of celebration, a festival unique to your homeworld, and for the first time in a long while, the Astral Express crew was taking a well-deserved break.
You adjusted the fabric of your festival attire, the delicate embroidery shimmering under the lantern light. It had been a while since you’d been back, and though the familiarity of it all brought you comfort, there was an underlying nervous energy in your chest—especially when you thought about Dan Heng.
It wasn’t as though anything had been said outright between the two of you, but there was something—an unspoken understanding, a quiet warmth that lingered in his presence. He was reserved, often keeping to himself, but you’d grown to recognize the subtle shifts in his expression, the way his gaze would linger on you for a fraction longer than necessary.
March had approached you earlier with a knowing glint in her eyes, insisting that you meet up with her and the Trailblazer near the main plaza. It wasn’t until you arrived at the designated spot that you realized something was amiss.
You weren’t alone.
Dan Heng stood there as well, his usual dark attire exchanged for something a bit more fitting for the festival, though he still retained his composed demeanor. His eyes flickered to you, a brief moment of surprise passing over them before he let out a quiet sigh.
“They planned this, didn’t they?” he asked, his voice steady but tinged with the faintest hint of amusement.
You exhaled a soft laugh. “Looks like it.”
Neither March nor the Trailblazer was anywhere to be found. The realization dawned on both of you—they had set this up.
A cool evening breeze passed through, stirring the gentle hum of wind chimes from a nearby stall. You glanced at Dan Heng, watching as he looked around, taking in the sights of your homeworld’s festivities. He didn’t seem opposed to staying, and though he remained ever-composed, you caught the way his fingers subtly traced the hem of his sleeve, a small tell of uncertainty.
“Well,” you started, shifting on your feet, “since we’re already here, we might as well enjoy the festival.”
Dan Heng’s gaze met yours, a quiet moment passing between you. Then, with a barely perceptible nod, he gestured forward. “Lead the way.”
As the evening carried on, the initial awkwardness faded into something far more comfortable. The two of you wandered through the lively streets, stopping to observe street performances and sample local delicacies. Dan Heng wasn’t one for grand expressions, but he listened attentively as you explained the traditions of your homeworld, occasionally offering a quiet remark or a small nod.
“What will you wish for?” you asked, glancing at Dan Heng as you dipped the brush into the ink.
At one point, you came across a wishing lantern booth. The vendor handed you each a small lantern, a delicate paper vessel meant to carry your hopes into the sky.
He hesitated for a moment, his expression unreadable. Then, in a rare moment of honesty, he answered, “To keep those I care for safe.”
Something in your chest tightened. You wrote your wish in silence, then watched as your lanterns ascended together, their warm glow mingling in the vast night sky.
The night carried on in a quiet, comfortable rhythm, the both of you drawn closer by the shared experience. As the festival began to wind down, you found yourselves at the outskirts of the celebration, the distant hum of festivities fading into the background.
“Thank you for staying,” you murmured, hugging your arms lightly.
Dan Heng studied you for a moment before speaking, his voice softer than usual. “I didn’t mind.”
Silence stretched between you, but it wasn’t the kind that was uncomfortable. Rather, it was filled with something lingering—something neither of you were quite ready to voice.
Perhaps, for tonight, the quiet understanding between you was enough.
And maybe, just maybe, this was the first step toward something more.

𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐥 ─ ⊹ ⊱ ☆ ⊰ ⊹ ─ 𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞
★ 𝐬𝐲𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐬𝐢𝐬: a workaholic marine biologist discovers a new species that was only believed to exist within stories. while heavily focused on her new groundbreaking research, she tries to figure out her feelings for her shiny new toy.
★ 𝐜𝐰/𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐬: first-person pov, merman rafayel, a bit of angst towards the end but nothing too crazy
★ 𝐰𝐜: 3.7k
★ 𝐚/𝐧: as a former marine bio major, i got to nerd out ab fish and raf (yay!!), set in main storyline era, but reader is obviously a biologist and not a hunter (raf is also not the sea god in this). tried to stick to lemurian lore, but kinda threw my own stuff in too. sorry if the ending seems a bit rushed, i lowkey tapped out, but overall i'm pretty proud of this!!

It was moments like these that made me love what I do.
I was in the pool room of the facility, a dome with towering window walls, and a large circular pool in the middle that connected to the sea outside. It was mainly used by me, and I was fortunate enough to be the only one with access, as I was the only field expert in the facility. I worked hands-on with marine life, collecting samples that I would send to the lab upstairs.
In the early mornings like these, I could finally just take a breath before starting my day and watch the sunrise all around me. Watch the way it would slowly illuminate the room, reflecting off the water that rippled with the morning wind. I could feel the weight lift off my shoulders because sunny, clear mornings like this made the stress of work worthwhile.
Not that I’d rather be anywhere else.
I checked the pool, seeing what creature may have found its way in. To my dismay, it was just another handful of mackerel that had probably gotten lost from its school. That’s all it’s been lately, a few strays from the euphotic zone. The bottom of the pool was an open hatch leveled with the sea, since the lowest level of the facility sat directly in the water. When motion was detected, the floor of the pool would close off, trapping whatever got caught inside. If I were lucky, maybe it would be a cute sea turtle or a shark, but those days were rare.
Disgruntled, I opened the hatch that had closed, setting the mackerel free. Inwardly I prepared for another boring afternoon, praying for another field work day when I could actually go out to sea.
-
Coming back from grabbing coffee from the breakroom and a few more test tubes from the lab upstairs, I made my way back to the pool room. From inside, I heard a loud groaning.
“OWWWW.”
Frantically I key carded my way into the room, the doors sliding open to reveal a strange man in the pool.
I stood frozen in place, not sure what free diver could have possibly found his way in, and… Why was he shirtless?
“Are you just going to stand there or are you going to help me?” The man glared.
I learned from years of working in the sea to stay calm and assert dominance, so striding forward with as much grace as I could muster-
My jaw dropped.
The man had odd markings painted on his skin and face, in intricate beautiful designs. He was clad in golden jewelry, draped with a chiffon sash. Despite being fresh out of the water, his dusty purple hair was nearly dry, and I was sure he was the most beautiful man I had ever seen. There was something otherworldly about him, not like anyone I had seen before.
That was when I noticed the tail.
It was amazing, and I screeched with joy. The iridescent blue scales matched the ones on his cheeks and neck, and it had to be as long as I was tall.
The man leaned against the bars on the pool, narrowing his eyes at me. “Your stupid machine hurt me.”
I stared at him laughing with excitement, “What are you?”
“Did you hear me? I said I was hurt.”
My eyes traveled over him, he didn’t appear to be hurt or even in much pain. He held out his hand, adorned with gold bangles and painted nails, “It pinched my finger.”
I shook my head, “Sorry, sometimes it malfunctions. It’s supposed to have a safety mechanism so fish can’t get caught in the doors.”
“Yes, well, you need to fix it.”
Whatever this man was, he had an attitude problem.
“I’m going back to my first question,” I circled the pool like a predator with its prey. The man-fish thing followed me with his eyes, and I stopped back in front of him. “What the hell are you?”
He rolled his eyes, “I think that’s quite obvious. I know humans aren’t that stupid.”
Stunned, I continued to stare at him. Of course I knew what a mermaid was, everyone always told stories of the ancient Lemurians, but that’s all it was. A story.
Yet, here in front of me, was a man with a fish tail.
Excitement continued to bubble up inside me and I started clapping my hands with glee, “Oh my gosh this is perfect. You’re perfect.”
He raised an eyebrow at me, “If I’m so perfect can we get rid of these prison walls? What are these even for anyways-” As he started to rattle on the bars.
“They’re so the fish can’t beach themselves when I’m not here,” Opening the gate so I could sink down to his level, I took off my shoes so I could sit on the ledge. Grabbing his face in my hands, I turned it side to side, observing closely the glitter of his scales underneath my fingers, “Your skin is so cold, yet you have hair…But you have scales… Are you a mammal, or…”
He smirked at me, taking my grabby hands away from his skin, “Y’know you could at least take me out to dinner first.”
I frowned, bothered with the interruption of my observations. Standing back up, I moved away to start grabbing collection and testing kits, “Can you hop up where I was please? Or will you need assistance? I have a sling-”
“I can do it.”
Watching as he pulled himself up and out of the water, biceps flexing as he lifted himself, I wondered how a fish could possibly get that ripped.
I sat down beside him, “You have no obvious gills…”
The man scoffed, and I put on my stethoscope. I placed it over where, if he had them, his lungs would be.
“Deep breath in,” Watching as he took an inhale through his nose, and listened as his lungs took in a breath of air.
“Lungs.” Confirming my thoughts.
Placing the drum over his heart, I realized his heartbeat was racing.
“I don’t understand-” He started, before I placed my finger over his lips.
“Shush, no talking.”
We sat there like that for a minute, before I pulled away, “120/60, is your heart rate usually that fast?”
Glaring at me, he crossed his arms, “No, I just don’t usually have random girls assaulting me.”
As I pulled out different test tubes, I rambled out questions to him that were mostly just thoughts in my head.
“Where did you come from? How do you speak English? Where do you live?”
“First of all,” He shunned away at the sight of a needle, “my name is Rafayel. Since you haven’t even bothered to ask.”
“Secondly, I came from the sea, duh. Didn’t even mean to get caught in this stupid thing…” The man winced as I pricked his finger, and I laughed, “Well you sure are compliant for being ‘assaulted’ by a stranger.”
“I have no choice! You have all these weapons for poking and prodding! Anyways, I speak every language, it comes from being Lemurian-”
I stopped, “You’re Lemurian?”
He rolled his eyes, “I thought the tail would’ve given that away.”
Silently I continued to work, thinking less about the fact that a real Lemurian was in front of me, and more about how this would affect the studies of the sea and marine life as a whole. More than 80% of the sea is unexplored, and the idea of Lemuria being part of it opens up a whole new doorway to the future of research. Not only that, but the fact that Rafayel was relatively eager to comply.
He watched me with his galaxy colored eyes, that seemed almost as wide with wonder as mine were. We seemed fascinated with each other, and maybe that’s why he was so calm about all of this. It’s not every day you’d let a stranger go full blown crazy scientist on you.
“Am I going to learn anything about you?” His question startled me, and it hadn’t even crossed my mind he knew nothing about me. My only focus had been on discovering who and what this creature was.
“Oh, I’m sorry, that’s my bad.” I introduced myself, and told him about my work as a marine biologist. He let me gripe about the lack of interesting catches in the pool as of late, and how my passion lies with whales.
“I don’t get to go out into the field often,” I explained, “but when I do it’s always the best. Being able to dive, and being out at sea for a few weeks studying the bigger or deeper animals we can’t get in the pool.”
“What about when you’re here?” Rafayel looked around the room as if it was an interesting enough place to work. To him, this probably seemed more fun than exploring the place he’s lived his whole life.
I sighed, “I’m never not here; but I mean, it’s fine I guess, it’s just you can only collect so many samples of the same few creatures before you get bored.” Smiling at him, I ran my fingers through his hair…
“That’s why you, my dear, are my new muse.”
-
To my surprise, Rafayel came back after that. I half expected him to just disappear, deeming me crazy and warning his fellow Lemurians about ‘that one weird marine biologist’. I’d kiss goodbye the breakthrough of research he could’ve given me, and go back to slaving over the same boring fish every day.
The next morning, he was in the pool bright and early, his head sitting in his crossed arms on the ledge.
He smiled when he saw me waltz in, “You’re here early.”
“I always am,” I shrugged, “do Leumrians not sleep?”
“Sometimes.”
We quickly slipped into a routine. He’d show up in the early mornings, and stay with me until I went home that night. Even if I ran out of samples to collect, waiting for lab results, he’d perch himself up on the ledge with me and watch me read old textbooks about old Lemurian history, or anatomy books about different kinds of marine mammals.
Rafayel would snatch the Lemurian books out of my hands, “You know, I can tell you everything you need to know.”
“Yes, well, you’re an unreliable narrator.” I’d grab the book back.
Though he had a tendency to exaggerate, I really did enjoy all the stories he would tell me; his tail in my lap as I’d compare it to previous studies I had done on scales, he’d go on about Lemurian people, boasting about the beauty of the city and explaining their culture. I’d sit and nod, humming responses as I carefully analyzed him.
I believed Rafayel kept coming back because he simply loved being doted over. Some part of him got off on the attention, seeing the way my face would light up when I put pieces of the puzzle together, grabbing his face in my hands with excitement.
“Raf this is amazing news!” I’d laugh, squeezing his face with one hand, shaking lab results in the air with another.
“I don’t know what you’re on about…” He’d say through smushed cheeks, but his eyes would twinkle and defy his feigned annoyance.
Sometimes, if I ran out of things to do, he’d use his ‘magical Lemurian powers’ (his words, not mine) to lure in some different creatures, giving me extra stuff to send to the lab upstairs. One day I had been giving a bit too much attention to a stingray he had summoned, and Rafayel started sighing from the other side of the pool.
“What's wrong now?” I asked, not even looking up at him, focusing my attention on extracting the stringer from the stingray's tail.
He sighed loudly again.
This time, my eyes met his, and he flopped down onto his back, pouting dramatically. Once I had gathered everything I needed, and set the poor creature free, I walked over to where Rafayel was still laying on his back, displeased.
He looked up at me through his eyelashes, and quickly turned his head to the side, “If I’m your muse then why are you giving so much attention to these random fish!”
Crouching down by his head, I poked his cheek, “You’re the one who summons them for me.”
“Well if this is the case, then I’m not gonna help anymore!” Sticking out his lower lip, Rafayel side-eyed me.
“I’m ever so sorry for doing my job, I shall never give another fish attention again besides you.”
He smirked, satisfied with my response.
Rafayel was always like this, oddly infatuated with me and jealous. He seemed pleased I didn’t have much of a social life outside of work, as my only focus was him. Often, he had a habit of prying into my thoughts, asking a million questions about myself. Some were simple, like where I went to school and what kind of music I enjoyed. Others were questions I never even thought about.
“How do you see your future?”
I snapped my head up from my book to look at him, “I’m sorry?”
He stared right into my eyes, almost as if he was trying to read my mind, “What do you see yourself doing in the future?”
“I don’t know, working probably.” I tried to shrug off the question.
“Do you ever want a family?”
“I don’t think I’d have time.”
“Well, you seem to have plenty of time for me.”
-
After that, I noticed a lot more how his eyes would follow me. How he’d rest his hand on my waist as I’d bandage him up from blood collection. The prolonged eye contact, the longing smiles, how his cheeks and ears would turn pink when I’d call him my muse.
To quote Rafayel simply, “Humans aren’t that stupid.”
I knew. I mean, I’m a scientist, I had a fair amount of common sense. Even though I spent most of my time with fish doesn’t mean I don’t know when a man likes me.
It’s not like I wasn’t attracted to him either, it would be impossible not to be. Rafayel is beautiful, just like the world that surrounds him; he’s the sea, the absolute personification of my first love. He’s spunky and brave, sassy yet kind, and despite my immediate joy about him regarding the future of marine research, it’s gone so far beyond that. My care for him has ascended past study and data, into a place I was scared to approach.
What was I supposed to do? Keep him in my bathtub for the rest of my life? A swimming pool in my backyard? This was work, this was business, this is the future; nothing is going to get in the way of that. Not my stupid feelings, nor his.
In the evening, before I was getting ready to go home, I was taking one final look at Rafayels scales on his face and neck.
“They’re so beautiful…” I muttered under my breath, inches away from his face. His scales were what fascinated me the most, despite it being the least interesting fact I had discovered about this humanoid. Somehow, a mammal having scales like this was utterly enchanting. Tracing the way they were engraved into his skin, he opened one of his eyes to look at me.
“Do you want one?” Rafayel asked.
“I wouldn’t want just one, I’d need enough to make a necklace.” Softly smiling, I playfully picked at one of them.
“Have I told you the Lemurian tradition of giving up one of our scales?”
“Mm, briefly…”
He tilted his head forward, as if he were telling me top secret information, “When we give one of our scales to someone, it bonds us for life. An eternal love that traverses through anything, whole universes.” Both eyes open now, the look in them told me I already had been given thousands of his scales.
I pushed his head back with one of my fingers, “You’re already bonded to me for life, at least until I can figure you out.”
Rafayel leaned towards me again, and I grabbed his face,
“Hold still.”
He frowned.
-
“Rafayel~” Walking into the pool room I sang out to him like usual, only to find the pool empty.
After nearly a year of seeing him every single day, for the first time, he was nowhere to be seen.
My heart sank, was it because I had rejected him?
I sat by the pool, filled with mackerel, and just waited…
And waited…
And waited…
I watched the sun begin to set through the large windows, covering the room in an orange glow. Rafayel always had a habit of complaining about the way the sun would shine in his eyes, but would quickly quiet down as he saw me stare out at the sea longingly; there was so much love in his eyes I thought it might suffocate him if he didn’t let it out.
I guess he finally had enough.
Tears threatened to pour as the sky turned dark, the room only lit up with the light of the moon.
Frustrated, I cursed him under my breath. How dare he ruin this for me? How could he let his own feelings get in the way of the bright future I had made for marine research? I wanted to hit him upside the head for giving me all of this information and data, just to up and leave, leaving my study on a cliffhanger.
How could he leave me?
The next day, for the first time in years, I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to get out of bed. Let alone go to work. I hated him for making me feel this way, for breaking down my walls so much that I was ready to give up the only thing I had going for me.
I went anyway.
Walking up to the doors of the pool room, I thought about just turning around and going home. I was going to waste my time with a school of fish that I had already collected hundreds of samples from, when I could just go back to my bed and rot, grieving the future of science and my broken heart.
Just as I was about to turn on my heel and leave, I heard soft singing from inside, a voice I recognized easily.
Practically breaking the doors open, I ran inside.
Sitting in a chair in the corner of the room, reading a textbook as if nothing was wrong, was the man I wanted to strangle with my bare hands.
He looked up at me, frowning, “You’re late.”
Once the adrenaline of seeing him wore off, I noticed where he was.
Outside of the pool, in a chair, with no help, with…
“Legs!” I screeched, exasperated.
“Yeah, okay, good to see you too I guess.” Rafayel scoffed, going back to the book. This time it was my turn to snatch it out of his hands.
“Rafayel, this changes everything! All of my studies!” I put my face in my hands, shaking my head.
“That's what you have to say about this? I don’t show up to try and play hard to get, and this is what I get?” He glared at me, “You didn’t even miss me!”
“Why didn’t you tell me you could grow legs!”
“I was trying to humor you!”
I threw my hands up in desperation, pacing back and forth. Rafayel started mumbling something in a language I didn’t understand, clearly mad.
“Is that all I am to you?” He spit out at me, like his words were acid, “Some science experiment?” I shot my head in his direction, narrowing my eyes, “You know as well as I do that’s not the case.”
“If that's not the case, then why are you doing this to me? Acting like you care and there’s something here, then putting your walls back up. Am I just being manipulated for your work?” Rafayel stood up, peering down at me, “Just some testing animal that you keep here in your tank?”
“Raf…No…Of course not.” I promised, seeing the look of hurt in his eyes made my heart squeeze in guilt. Tracing the painted marking on his cheek, I noticed the scales on his face and neck were nowhere to be seen.
His demeanor quickly switched at my touch, grabbing my hands in desperation, pulling them to his chest and clutching my fingers over his heart.
“I don’t care.” Rafayel stated.
“What?”
“I don’t care what you do. You can have me for life; study me, use me, publish me for the world to see, I don’t care. I just want you in return.”
He fell to his knees, holding his hands tightly on my waist. Looking up at me with a pleading look in his eyes, Rafayel started muttering what I could only make out to be a Lumerian prayer I had read in one of the textbooks, “Please.” He cried.
“Rafayel, just stand up.”
“Please.” He repeated.
I stared down at him, “Raf-”
“Please, no, just say you want me. Say you’ll have me. Open this door, I know you’re scared, but I’ll figure it out.”
“Rafayel.”
“Put your trust in me. I’ll give you all my scales, my blood, my life, please, be mine, I’m already yours; be mine.”
I fell to my knees with him, smashing my lips onto his. Tangling my hand in his hair, the other clutching onto his sash, I felt like I was trying to kiss the life out of him. I wanted to merge my soul with his, I wanted to be a part of him, climb into his skin, breathe his air into my lungs. He tasted like the salt of the sea, his lips warm compared to the cold of his skin.
My walls crumbled, and with his hands on my skin, I realized nothing mattered more than him. No more research, no more work, just him.
I loved him so much, I could cry.
‘How do you see your future?’ He had asked so long ago.
With you, Rafayel.
Just you.

dancing in the moonlight / 꿈만 같아, 너와 마주한 세상
pairing: shen ricky x gn!reader (no pronouns used) genre: fluff word count: 712
notes: chinese tutor ricky. that's it that's the post, uni!au, outfit based on this, feel free to correct me if any translations are wrong !! i know all of these words but i am not a native speaker, everyone pls listen to blue paradise, not proofread !! pls forgive any mistakes <33 title from zb1 - take my hand
soft beams of sunlight stream in through large windows, casting a golden glow across the table. the light has grown brighter as the sun dips just below the horizon. trees stretch just barely into view, branches decorated with freshly blooming pink and white flowers.
you jump slightly at the sound of a backpack rustling, followed by SHEN RICKY sliding into the seat beside you. “sorry,” he says with a sheepish smile. “did i startle you?”
“no,” you chuckle softly in return, suddenly all too self conscious of the sweatshirt you had carelessly pulled on before rushing to class that morning. “don’t worry.”
ricky nods curtly. you watch his gaze sweep over your textbook, shifting ever so slightly closer. “let’s get started then.”
it was far too easy to admire ricky. he’s just as handsome as ever, dressed in a pair of black slacks and a satin dress shirt. sunlight glints against his silver earrings. the cross dangles just above the top of his tattoo. the black ink contrasts harshly against his skin. he must’ve gotten it touched up recently, you think. it looks darker. he looks so handsome.
a few stray strands of blonde hair frame his sharp features, drawing your attention to the small wings of his eyeliner. if you look too closely, you’re almost sure you can see the faint edges of his cherry red lip stain.
“what unit are you working on?” ricky asks. his voice is deeper when he whispers - almost raspy. just as easily as he distracts you, he pulls you back to reality. you curse the way butterflies rush throughout your stomach.
“descriptive compliments.” you quietly push the book over, watching as he reads over the sample dialogue.
after a second, ricky hums. “this isn’t too difficult. you just have to remember the difference between verbs and objects.”
you nod, remaining quiet as he continues to explain. it was easy to fall into a routine with ricky. he was always so punctual - it’s almost predictable. you would occasionally catch glimpses of him before his morning classes, grabbing coffee with his friends or playing basketball when the court was still empty. he always smiled when your eyes met, greeting you with a quick wave before returning his attention to what he was doing before.
“hey,” ricky frowns softly, cocking his head to the side slightly. his eyebrows furrow in concern. “are you okay? you seem distracted.”
you swallow your embarrassment, anxiously letting out a half-hearted chuckle as you nod. “sorry. i’m a little worried about a test tomorrow. what were you saying?”
ricky doesn’t answer. at least, not at first. “let’s do something else.” he closes your textbook, pushing it aside in favor of turning to face you. “i’ll ask a question. all you have to do is answer it.”
you chuckle dryly, letting out a sarcastic huff. “a pop quiz? really?”
he smiles as he shakes his head. “just listen, okay? 听一下。” (“listen.”)
“好吧。” (“okay.”)
“今天晚上我们一起去吃晚饭,行吗?我请客你。” (“do you want to go to dinner tonight? i’ll treat you.”)
you pause. your mind races. if you stare for too long, you can almost see a hint of pink threatening to spread across the tips of his ears. “真的吗?” (“really?”)
ricky smiles softly. he raises a hand to anxiously scratch at the back of his neck, careful not to disturb his carefully styled bangs. “是。你今天晚上有时间吗?” (“yeah. are you free tonight?”)
“有。为什么?” (i am. why?)
“因为我喜欢你。我想约你出去。” (because i like you. i want to take you on a date.)
for a moment, it feels like the world seems to stop around you. the sun has almost fully set now, leaving only the flickering lights to illuminate the room.
“are you serious?”
“of course i am. so,” ricky’s metal chair scrapes against the tile floor as he shuffles ever so closer. this time, the butterflies in your stomach aren’t from anxiousness - they’re from excitement. his eyes crinkle up in the corners when he smiles at you, sweet and inviting and impossible to say no to. “what do you think? can i take you to dinner tonight?”
you can’t help but smile brightly in return. you reach over, gingerly taking ricky’s hand into your own. he follows your lead, intertwining your fingers together and giving your hand a gentle squeeze. “i’d love to.”

SSR Jamil Viper - Nightmare Suit Vignette
”From all the children to the witches flying through the sky”
[Halloween Town – Dr. Finkelstein's Lab]
Jamil: Sally-san, I've made a dish sample. Could I ask you to taste test it?
Sally: Of course, I don't mind at all. In fact, I was waiting for you to say something, since it had been smelling good for some time now…
Jamil: Is that so. Well, I do hope it suits your taste… Try it with this sauce here.
Sally: There are a lot of finely chopped ingredients in this sauce. I wonder how it will taste.
Sally: …Oh, this is delicious! You really brought forth the flavor of the herbs.
Jamil: That's right. Do you think the others in Halloween Town will like it?
Sally: I know I like it. But hm… I think the folks in this town would prefer it to be a little more acidic.
Jamil: A little more acidic, I see. Should I add more vinegar, or add fruit to the sauce…?
Sally: There was that one plant with the huge leaves, remember? What if you were to chop up the stem and cook it together?
Jamil: Huge leaves…? I think I know which ones you're talking about, but just in case, can you point out…
???: Sally, help me out here. At this rate, I'll lose my head.
Sally: Jack…! You look so troubled. What's going on?
Jack Skellington: No matter how much I think about it, I can't figure it out, so I feel like I'm going crazy. I need your advice.
Jamil: …Looks as though this is a serious matter. I'll leave you two be.
Jamil: Now that I have received Sally's thoughts, I'll proceed with fixing the dishes. The two of you should have a good talk together…
Sally/Jack Skellington: WAIT!!
Jamil: Eh?
Jack Skellington: I'd like you to listen to what I have to say too, Jamil-kun. I need to figure out a way out of this funk.
Sally: I'd like to ask your help as well. There's no way we can leave Jack like this. Please, help him.
Jamil: …O-Okay, then. If both of you are going to insist like that, I'll join in.
Jamil: So, what's the issue you need help with?
Jack Skellington: It's about the Halloween preparations. I heard that in your world, you guys do some sort of "illumination" event.
Jack Skellington: So I had this thought… What if the Jack-o'-Lanterns light up right as I appear?
Jack Skellington: Wouldn’t it be grand if the lanterns lit up one by one as I walk forward!?
Jack Skellington: …Only, I just can't figure out how to get the timing of everything being lit up right.
Jamil: Wait, so you've already decided to do it!? Shouldn't you determine whether it's actually feasible, first…?
Sally: This is how Jack always works. Once he comes up with something, he won't back down.
Jack Skellington: Sally, Jamil-kun. Please, give me some good ideas!
Sally/Jamil: …...
Jamil: Well… An illumination would definitely liven things up.
Jamil: Back in our world, we have certain programming…
Jamil: We generally have people with specialized knowledge use specific tech to control that sort of illumination.
Jack Skellington: Well, that's wonderfully useful to know. Is that something we would be able to do, as well?
Jamil: I wouldn't really know how to do it. Even in our world, there are only a handful of people who would be able to pull it off.
Jack Skellington: Hmm… I wonder if there's any way we can make it happen.
Jamil: Right… What if you were to ask Dr. Finkelstein?
Jamil: I hear he's an excellent scientist. He may come up with a good answer.
Jack Skellington: I see, you're right! I wonder if he's at home right now.
Sally: No, he's out, helping with preparations. I think he should be in the town center…
Jack Skellington: Alright. Well then, I'll head off to find him!
Jamil: I do hope you find a solution. And with that, I'll go back to finishing my work.
Jack Skellington: What are you talking about, Jamil-kun! You're coming with me!
Jack Skellington: I have no knowledge of how things work in your world. I need you to explain things to the Doctor for me!
Jamil: No, wait, I need to finish preparing the food… Sally-san, can't you back me up here?!
Sally: Once Jack starts saying something, he doesn't listen to anything else.
Sally: I'll let Trey-kun and the others know, so… Please take care of Jack for me.
Jack Skellington: Thanks, Sally. Okay, now that that's settled, let's go right now!
Jack Skellington: COME, COME, HURRY, HURRY!
Jamil: Fine. I understand, I'll join you. …Why am I always resigned to the same sort of role wherever I go?
[Halloween Town – Center]
Jack Skellington: Alright, we made it to the town center. The Doctor should be setting the decorations up around here somewhere.
[nyoom!]
Jamil: !! Jack-san, stand back!
[thud! roll, roll…]
Jamil: Why did half a pumpkin come flying at us!?
Jamil: Oh, it's been sliced so beautifully… Wait, I mean, what just happened?
Halloween Town Resident: Huh? Oh hey, it's Jack and Jamil! You guys just showed up out of the blue, that surprised us!
Jamil: We should be the ones saying that! Was it you who threw that pumpkin at us?
Halloween Town Resident: No, not at all! We didn't do anything! It was all because of this big guy slicing that pumpkin in two.
Jamil: This big guy?
Jamil: Are you talking about this thing with the huge cutter? It just looks like it's a sharp blade held between two long poles.
Jamil: They're using something this big just to slice pumpkins in half? Or maybe… nah, it can't be.
Jack Skellington: Oh, is this your first time seeing something like this? Then, I bet you don't know about this huge box with all these spikes inside.
Jamil: This big box…? I'm afraid I don't. What is it used for?
Vampire: It's to squeeze the life out of… fresh juice! Heeheehee!
Jamil: Ach! He just popped out of nowhere, said his piece and then left again…
Jamil: But seriously, juice? I feel like this would be pretty difficult to use to squeeze fruits… I think I won't think further about it.
???: Ah, Jack-san. So, you were over here. I've come to collect you.
Jamil: Jade? What do you mean collect him?
Jade: As soon as he heard of the concept of illumination, he said, "This won't be enough!" and ran off so forlornly…
Jade: And so, were you able to concoct some brilliant idea, Jack-san?
Jack Skellington: Well, that's… Not yet. I haven't come across something that just screams "This is it!" yet.
Jade: If you find yourself in a quandary, please don't feel the need to keep it bottled up inside yourself. Both I and Azul would be happy to be of help.
Jamil: Hey, don't try to peddle your business here of all places. Seriously, you Octavinelle folk are always on the lookout for opportunity.
Jamil: We're actually searching for Dr. Finkelstein to ask for his advice. Have you seen him at all?
Jade: I'm afraid I haven't. Vil-san should be helping out nearby, perhaps you could ask him?
Jamil: Vil-senpai…? Oh, that might work! Jack-san, what if we were to ask Vil-san for his thoughts?
Jamil: He's an actor… He has experience in working on projects that garner a lot of attention, so he may be helpful for not only the illumination, but also on various ways to implement it.
Jack Skellington: Is that right? I might be able to really learn something by talking to him. Let's head over to Vil-kun right away!
Jamil: Vil-senpai, thanks for taking the time. We were hoping to get your take on something for Halloween…
Jamil: Jack-san is saying that he'd like to appear before everyone in a very flashy manner, with a resounding illumination.
Vil: The most important scene to prepare in any production is when the main character appears, yes. I support your plan to enhance that moment. However…
Vil: Halloween Town doesn't have any sort of specialized equipment of that sort… I feel as though it would be difficult to set up some elaborate lighting scheme as of right now.
Malleus: There's no need to use any human-made equipment. I can enhance Skellington's appearance with my magic.
Jamil: Right, using this guy was also an option, hm.
Malleus: Would you be wreathed in light? Shall we raise fireworks into the sky? Ah, or perhaps we could make it snow.
Jack Skellington: Oooh…! That's amazing, Malleus-kun! I bet you could even make it rain bugs to frighten every…
Vil/Jamil: ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Vil: You want to rain down bugs? Absurd! That idea is the worst thing I've ever heard.
Jamil: YEAH! …Ahem. Pardon my outburst.
Jamil: Jack-san, you're the Pumpkin King. Should you not rely on your own strengths to give your townsfolk a scare, instead of using bugs?
Jamil: Even if we were to secure Malleus-senpai's cooperation… This is the only time we'll be able to help you with this, Jack-san.
Jamil: Next time, you'll have to bring about Halloween by yourselves, just like your previous years.
Jamil: If we were to implement a method that can even be executed by the others in this town, then it can be utilized for future years down the road.
Jack Skellington: Jamil-kun… You're an inspiration! You were not only thinking of this Halloween, but for the next ones, too.
Jack Skellington: I get it. I won't rely on magic or bugs. Let's think of something that all of us Halloween Town residents can do.
Malleus: Hm… It seems I am unneeded. Call me if you change your mind.
[Malleus leaves]
Jade: Oh, my… Is he sulking, now?
Vil: He isn't that much of a child… I'm sure. Come now, let's get this discussion started.
Jamil: So, we need to come up with a method to give him a grand appearance without any specialized equipment, or using magic, huh…
Vil: Yes… This may be a cliché, but what about an entrance while riding something?
Vil: The higher up one is, the easier it would be to garner the attention of others as opposed to simply walking. We can even make sure the spotlight is on one focal point.
Jade: That's a good idea. Just like how the tales of the mermaid princess even tell of how her father, the king, would appear before everyone on a chariot pulled by dolphins.
Jamil: I actually was reminded of the legend of the princess of the oasis that's prevalent in the Scalding Sands.
Jamil: With golden camels, peacocks, and various other animals and dancers in tow…
Jamil: A young man presented himself before her in an extravagant parade.
Jamil: Hmm, a parade…
Jamil: Jack-san, I've thought of something good.
[Halloween Town – Center]
Jamil: Jack-san, I've thought of something good.
Jack Skellington: I see that gleam in your eye… You look pretty proud of yourself. What kind of plan do you have up your sleeve?
Jamil: We should throw a parade.
Jade: A parade?
Jade: Back at Night Raven College… At our school, we tend to have one as a finale on Halloween.
Jamil: That's right. We tend to have one at the start of our feasts in Scarabia, as well. …More often than not.
Vil: A parade would definitely be grand and lively. It's not a bad idea to keep the audience's attention.
Vil: However, wouldn't we require a large number of people to put on a parade?
Vil: Do you intend on having the townsfolk learn how to parade march?
Jamil: Not at all. The only one who will be in the parade will be Jack-san.
Jack Skellington: Just me?
Jamil: Ah, well, of course, we'll still need all hands on deck to help…
Jamil: All the townsfolk are looking forward to seeing how you'll arrive on Halloween day.
Jamil: We couldn't possibly ask them to march behind you in the parade!
Jamil: Instead, we need to make sure your gallant appearance is firmly burned into their mind.
Jack Skellington: You're right. It's just like you say, Jamil-kun! I want all my fellow residents to see me clearly.
Jamil: And so, that's where Vil-senpai's earlier idea comes into play.
Jack Skellington: His earlier idea…? Oh, you mean where I arrive while riding something.
Jack Skellington: Jade-kun mentioned the story with the dolphin pulling the chariot. And what was it Jamil-kun said again…?
Jamil: Ah, I hadn't actually mentioned what he rode, right. That young man presented himself riding in on the back of an elephant…
Jack Skellington: An "elephant"? We don't have such a creature in Halloween Town.
Jamil: An elephant is an extremely large animal with a long nose, magnificent tusks, and large ears.
Jack Skellington: I can just imagine something utterly frightful just from that description. I'm getting chills.
Jade: Well, we can't have that. I suppose we should hurry and find an elephant and bring it here to Halloween Town as soon as possible, then!
Jamil: Hey, don't just throw that out there!
Jade: What do you mean? I am simply attempting to accommodate Jack-san's request.
Vil: Jamil's doing all he can to wrap this up quickly, don't cause any unnecessary issues.
Jade: But it would be no fun if the plan were to go off so smoothly without a hitch.
Jamil: It's not like someone like you from Octavinelle would do something without taking a fee, anyway. So, shut up and just let me deal with this!
Jack Skellington: Hey, what are the three of you whispering about over there?
Jamil: We were simply discussing his idea on bringing an elephant into town.
Jamil: As a concept, I don't think it's terrible. However…
Jack Skellington: Oh, is there something problematic about it?
Jamil: Jack-san, you said that you'd want everyone to be able to see you clearly.
Jamil: But if you were to ride on the back of a large elephant…
Jamil: Wouldn't there be people who wouldn't be able to see your expressions, let alone your silhouette?
Jamil: And we want everyone from those brats― I mean from all the children to the witches flying through the sky to see you!
Jack Skellington: Oh no. So if I do that, not everyone will be able to enjoy themselves…
Jack Skellington: I would have loved to have seen an elephant, myself… But I suppose we should leave that for another time.
Jack Skellington: Ahhh, we've come full circle… Urgh… What should I do?
Jamil: THUS!! What if you were to ride a horse?
Jamil: There are many scenes in movies and fairy tales in which a king would appear before his people while riding a horse. Right, Vil-senpai?
Vil: That's true, it does tend to give them a heroic aura. For this production, it doesn't have to be a real one. We only need to make it look just as striking.
Jack Skellington: A horse… A horse, huh! Yeah, that sounds perfect. Now it feels like the last piece of the puzzle just clicked into place!
Jack Skellington: Oh, what if we were to gather up some straw to make a horse? I want to make it look terrifying to perfectly suit the King of Halloween.
Jamil: You want to make a straw horse? That's definitely not something I've ever seen back in my world. What a brilliant idea, Jack-san.
Jamil: Ah, lovely, I'm glad that we've assuaged your worries. I'm looking forward to Halloween day!
Jade: It seems as though everything has wrapped up without any further issues. Although, I can't help but feel a little disappointed…
Jade: You were able to bring some almost impossible request back into the realm of feasibility without rejecting it outright…
Jade: Heh, if anyone could have done it, it would've been you, Jamil-san. I guess it's to be expected… since you're so experienced in dealing with unreasonable behavior.
Vil: Indeed. On top of that, he even found a way to utilize my strengths… Looks like everything was settled thanks to your careful thinking.
???: Jack, Jamil-kun!
Jamil: Sally-san, what are you doing here?
Sally: You didn't come back, so I started to get worried. Have you all decided how Halloween will be kicked off yet?
Jack Skellington: Yeah! Jamil-kun gave us a spectacular idea.
Sally: Well, now...! I'm so happy to see a huge smile on your face, Jack. It's all thanks to Jamil, I'm sure.
Sally: I don't know if me or the other townsfolk would've been able to clear up his worries.
Sally: I only wish Jamil-kun could stay in this town forever…
Jack Skellington: That's a great idea! You should stay here in Halloween Town and help us prepare for Halloween forever.
Jamil: I am beyond honored to have such high praise from the both of you.
Sally/Jack Skellington: So, then…!
Jamil: I appreciate your invitation, but I'll have to respectfully decline.
Jamil: Back home, there are many things that would fall apart without my assistance… I worry for the people I left behind.
Jack Skellington: I see… Well, that's a shame. You truly are a prudent guy. I totally understand why so many rely on you.
Jamil: Thank you.
Jamil: While I'm here… No, while we're here we'll make sure this Halloween will go smoothly.
Jamil: Let's make this Halloween the most enjoyable and scariest one yet.
