You said sandwings were your favorite, so would you be willing to do Queen Thorn?
of course! I'm aware this design takes some explaining to do, but trust me... this IS Queen Thorn.
Tumblr media
I think of all the times I've made a post that starts with 'this might be the time I take too much liberty,' THIS really takes the cake.
Thinking about Thorn as a character, I really wanted to bring out her more scorpion-den side, even if the redesign is set after she becomes queen. I feel that Thorn's most admirable quality as a ruler is her strong sense of identity and belonging among the citizens of the sandwing kingdom, and thought it unreasonable that she would make any real effort to dress/appear different after becoming queen (even if it caused a little uproar among sandwing nobles.)
Because of this, I decided to incorporate a lot of punk design aspects (for any new readers, my last post is about the scorpion den being punk.) She has a lot of spikes sewn/fastened directly to her under scales, as well as a little vest and tail bracelet with the outclaw patch sewn in. I wanted to give her some kind of royal-leaning attire without losing the vibe, so I added these leather-ish, chain-ish back piece meant to resemble a cape. Kind of. Onto her scales: Thorn's design is very on the nose: with thorn patterns (based on the name) and swirl patterns (reminded me of sand.) Finally, her frills are dyed! I imagine Thorn probably uses a blend of papaya or prickly pear cactus to get the job done, but the ends fade with time. That kind of makes me wonder if sandwing frills grow like hair..
--
As always, thank you all so much for your support and continued appreciation of this blog! If you're interested in making a request or viewing which characters are on the redesign waitlist, check my pinned post! I'm still working on determining my art comp prizes, but I can confidently tell you all it will probably be a redesign or draw in your style challenge!

The Weird Introduction of Thorn and the Outclaws
Thorn's introduction is so weird, especially compared to how she's characterized for the rest of the series. Like the first time she was introduced, I was fully convinced she was running the equivalent of the Sandwing mafia.
Like the first thing said about the Scorpion Den, where the Outclaws reside, is this:
Tumblr media
Which, fine, they are Nightwings so obviously they'd have baised information. But when they go to meet the Outclaws, they're not allowed in without some sort of offering:
Tumblr media
Okay, they are grown Nightwings, so I suppose a contribution might make sense since they'd probably not come because they're in need of something. Whatever. But he specifically said "no one" gets inside.
.
Anyway, Six-Claws finds Sunny hiding behind them and escorts her inside the city. She's approached by an assassin-for-hire and given his card and Six-Claws says this:
Tumblr media
Mind you, Six-Claws is essentially Thorn's right-hand man.
Then we're introduced to the fact that the Outclaws feed dragonets:
Tumblr media
This is something that's clearly meant to make them seem like good guys in both Sunny and the reader's eyes. But also, it's mentioned that most of the dragons here are starving or injured so they're likely impoverished. Which really begs the question, what were they giving to the Outclaws to get them to let them in? Isn't it kind of fucked up to demand something in exchange from a desperate dragon?
.
When they come across the Oasis the city is built around, we have this exchange:
Tumblr media
You guys see how this sort of thing is a problem, right? Like this would read as villainous?
It would be one thing if this was prevention from any one group taking control of the water, but no. They control it because then they can control the city. Granted, guarding any sort of vital resource is automatically very suspicious regardless of how good your intentions are. But hey, they are intended to prevent crime and this is a very effective way of controlling the territory. Fine.
.
Anyway, we're introduced to Thorn and she kills Preyhunter. It would be one thing if Preyhunter had attacked her, but that's not at all what happened. I'll just put here the full excerpt:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is not at all a reasonable reaction on Thorn's part. Generally, in any media, when someone kills the messenger, they're the bad guy or at the very least not the greatest pillar of morality. Because killing the messenger is a disregard of someone's life and a show of lack of emotional control considering you lashed out not at the person causing you harm, but the one who had the unfortunate job of telling it to you.
Hell, Preyhunter was the more reasonable one here. It takes Thorn grabbing him by the neck and throwing him on the ground, then threatening him with her tail, and then nearly burning him with fire for him to fight back. And does he use his built in throat flamethrower? No, he uses his claws instead. The way it's written heavily implies even this is just a blind panic reaction. And Thorn kills him.
.
The book never goes into how messed up this whole situation was. A few paragraphs later, we have these thoughts from Sunny:
Tumblr media
Ah yes, murder is okay as long as you feel bad about it and the person attempted to defend themself.
Also she 100% did not have to do that. There's genuinely a level of insecurity you need to have to feel the need to prove to someone who is very clearly at your mercy that you have power over them.
.
It is later explained that Thorn does this because she thought Preyhunter was lying, but when Fierceteeth confirms that Morrowseer is in fact dead and the Nightwing Kingdom was destroyed, we have this:
Tumblr media
Sunny is fully convinced Thorn intends to kill Fierceteeth for telling her a fact she doesn't like in a tone she also doesn't like.
If this were any other book, hell if this were any other character, they would be a villain. I actually genuinely can't think of a single villain in WoF who has killed some sort of messenger or bystander because they didn't like something that was told to them. Like, that is villain behavior 101.
When Sunny and Thorn mention killing Preyhunter, all she says is this:
Tumblr media
"Yeah, sometimes you gotta show your gang your teeth by throwing down and killing a random dragon who let you know that the guy you hate is dead because you thought he was lying but as it turns out he wasn't lying and pretty much died for nothing, Beetle"
"Beetle?"
"My pet name for you!"
Am I tripping or is the sudden shift in conversation weird? After this Thorn is presented as being level-headed, kind, wise, and, in general, a good leader.
.
So what we have is:
You must give something to the Outclaws to be allowed into the Scorpion Den
Said Scorpion Den is full of impoverished and injured dragons likely fleeing the horrors of the war
It's implied Six-Claws at least has hired the services of enough assassins to recognize that the one here is "too expensive" and "barely competent"
The Outclaws feed dragonets up to the age of 8 for free every day
The Outclaws control the only water supply in order to control the town
Thorn kills a guy who tells her a message she doesn't like and dismisses this action as "showing your teeth" essentially
Please, I need to know it's not just me. Like this reads as some sort of desert mafia, right?
It would be one thing if just Sunny herself was idealizing Thorn because she was her mother and realized she wasn't as good as she thought she was, but no. All of the Outlcaws' and Thorn's actions are not only justified, but seen as a necessity in the narrative.
Thorn is basically divinely blessed to rule the Sandwings. This introduction to Thorn and the Outclaws doesn't really line up with the rest of the book(s). Am I saying Thorn or the Outclaws are villains? No. But I am saying the way they were introduced implies that they are or at the very least are morally grey. But they're not. It makes me wonder if they were original meant to be more villainous, but Tui changed her mind? Idk

Oc and the gang request… kinda?
Tumblr media
My son Sage is an animus that wasn’t born with his powers but forced an actual animus to give him magic, but the actual animus stunted Sage’s powers so it changes him mentally AND physically and he can only enchant small objects. But he still uses his magic constantly by selling enchanted items for a SUPER expensive price and is a very well known figure. He also has two dragons who work for him, a mind reader nightwing and a sandwing/seawing hybrid but this isn’t about them so I won’t go into detail
Since animus magic is regulated in ur story I thought it would be funny if Sage in a TBoFS au was a black market dealer of enchanted items instead of a massive public figure and was a widely spread rumor at the school and used as an example of what happens if you use your magic incorrectly. What if the gang was gossiping about him? What would the gang think of him? What if one of them had seen Sage before or atleast thought they did? I’d imagine Sheephead would NOT like Sage in the slightest
You have never seen this before…….. this is definitely totally new and not copy pasted…….
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Super procrastinated on this ask mostlyyy because I was weary about spoilers - Black Market Magic forces me to tread lightly lol. Buttt it’s close enough to the second book so finally I did it!
Super fun request :]

my bsd x wof au basic info
BSD characters and which Wings Of Fire tribe i think they’d belong to, and maybe some rambles about it.
In this au, the NightWing tribe and the island represents the mafia and the NightWing tribe and the rainforest are seperate. The rainforest kind of represents the agency (kind of!! Not much!!) in a way. Not all mafia members live on the volcano island,  and some characters have more info than others
This is NOT gonna be all characters <333
Chuuya - SkyWing. Orange SkyWing. And hear me out. Firescales, like corruption. And SkyWing scientists have ‘discovered’ a way for him to ‘turn’ it on and off, kinda like Peril’s book but it's with a phrase spoken. More about this in Dazai’s. But building off the scientists, they didn’t really do anything but test and experiment about the firescales soooooo. Building off that, he wasn’t actually a firescales at birth. He looked like one, with the bright orange scales and blue eyes, but he wasn’t. Scientists saw this and abducted him, cursed him with animus magic to turn him into a firescales, and then ran experiments (I’m aware that SkyWings don’t have animus dragons, so to stay true to the series the animus who cursed Chuuya was part of a different tribe. this Dragon name: Storm (picked this out before i knew about Stormbringer aha)
Dazai: NightWing. Mind Reader. Animus. Was formerly apart of the Night Kingdom and the mafia, but ran away to live in the rainforest. When leaving said island, he cast a spell on himself to be immune to all animus spells, cancel out any spells, and also to reverse the effects of madness and instability using his magic had caused on his soul(idk if this is technically possible in the series but who cares its my au), as well as no longer having animus power (like jerboa in the 14th, but only on him). This allows him to cancel out the effects of Chuuya’s firescales, effectively rendering him a ‘normal’ SkyWing once more. Blames Ango for the death of his best friend, Oda.
Oda: NightWing. Seer. Based on his ability. Died on the mainland after being caught in a battle with an IceWing. Was searching for an animus touched object(probably the obsidian mirror) Ango asked him to find
Ango: NightWing. Blames himself for Oda’s death. Ran away after Oda died.
Kyouka: RainWing. Following the plots of the series, was one of the RainWings abducted by the NightWing(in this case, the mafia) and trained to be an assassin.
Tanizaki- RainWing. Since RainWings can camouflage themselves, I was thinking haha this is perfect for his ability in which he can make himself invisible! Pretty gentle, except when Naomi is threatened (think mangrove and orchid except violent..)
Atsushi - IceWing. Being raised away from the tribe, he didn’t learn all the legends about NightWings, so he doesn’t hate them. Was raised on the outskirts of the Ice Kingdom before being left for dead, distrustful of IceWings due to his past!
Akutagawa - NightWing. Like most NightWings, has a grudge against IceWings (cough cough Atsushi). Instead of being raised in the night kingdom, he was raised on the volcanic island (I have ideas for that…) and it severely affected his health.
Mori - NightWing. Not really much to say.
Ranpo - SandWing. Backstory and shit is all the same but replace people with dragons. I do wanna build off of this though.
Fukuzawa - IceWing. Was originally an assassin in the scorpion den before meeting Ranpo and deciding to mentor to lead the younger, inexperienced dragonet and ended up unofficially adopting him (dadzawa i will die on this hill)
Kenji - MudWing. No questions asked. MudWing.
Jouno - I SEE HIM AS A SEAWING IDK WHY
Tecchou - MudWing or SeaWing I CANT DECIDE.
Teruko - RainWing. Hear me out, everyone thinks she is defenseless and nice and typical RainWing nonsense, but shes like Glory and will not hesitate to use her venom.
please please ask me questions about this

Wof tribe headcanons made by me!
Mudwings
They have multiple sets of spines on their backs, similar to crocodiles, alligators, and gharials! I think they'd be distinguished for different mudwings by royalty, with royal dragons having 5 rows of spines and non-royals having 3.
Example of spines:
Tumblr media
Seawings
Seawings have distinct tail shapes and patterns, most likely based on different species of fish or sharks. To name a few examples, angel fish, clown fish, thresher sharks, and tiger sharks. This includes them having fish, shark, and dolphin tails.
The edges of their wings are smooth and rounded in order to glide through currents and to have better mobility while swimming, similar to the light fury's wings from how to train your dragon. They are less acquainted with flying due to this.
Example of wing shape:
Tumblr media
Nightwings:
A mind-reader's silver scales can vary in shape and number, the most common amount of scales next to their eyes being between 1 and 3, though they can have as many as 5 or 6. This depends on how strong their powers are, and there can be an increase in number as their powers get stronger.
All nightwings have very faint patterns similar to a panther on their main scales.
Example of pattern:
Tumblr media
Rainwings
A rainwing's frill can vary in size and number of points, the common number being 3-5. Their frill raises when they're angry or in a defensive pose, similar to the Jurassic Park adaptation of the dilophosaurus.
Example of frill, less exaggerated for rainwings:
Tumblr media
Icewings
The spines on an icewing's back are an indication of age. They are born with little to no spines, and as they mature, more grow in over time. An ancient icewings, though rarely living that long, have manes of spines that trail down to their chests, giving them an intimidating look.
Their blood varies in shades of blue, bluish green, and purple.
Skywings
The wingspan of a skywing's wing is twice the length of it's body. This gives them excellent mobility, but also makes them bigger targets in the air.
In rare cases, firescaled skywing's can have the ability to "turn off" their firescales at will. This is never spoken of because the skywing tribe did not want any possibility of hope for the firescaled bloodlines.
Sandwings
A sandwing tail barb can vary in size and shape, some shapes being more efficient with their abilities than others.
Many sandwings have the patterns of common desert animals, such as the cheetah, hyena, jackal, or addax.
Example of patterns:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leafwings
Leafwings are distinguished by the leaf shapes on their tail, spines, and wings. These shapes vary by the types of leaves they resemble.
Their scales turn different shades with the passing seasons. This helps them camouflage into the trees when they turn different colors. When the leaves of their trees fall during autumn and winter, the scales of the leafwings' turn dark shades of brown to blend in with tree bark and the dirt.
Going off of that theory about the winter season, leafwings tend to create burrows underground during winter and hibernate until spring because the tree leaves they live in are not around during this time.
Hivewings
Many hivewings need glasses because their vision is quite poor for dragon standards. This is because their sight is similar to that of a bee's.
The wings of a hivewings are quite thin. Though they are strong when flying from hive to hive, they do not hold well during severe storms.
Silkwings
Silkwings have a prehensile tail, quite like rainwings. They use it to hang from trees and other structures during their metamorphosis.
When a silkwing emerges from its cocoon, their wings need time to dry, just like butterflies and moths. If this process is not done correctly, the wings will suffer permanent damage.

OH MY GOLLY I LOVEE HOW YOU SRAW LEZAH SHFOSDS PLEASE I REQUEST MORE OF HER!! IF YOU WANT!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
RAAAHH HI HI HI HI HI THANK YOU!!! JUST FOR YOU ANON, YOU GET MY WOF AU DESIGN!! She is of the Sandwings and Nightwings. I think I've decided not to go with the concept of how I made faries, anti-faries, and pixies work in my au. I think I'm just going to make them all animus and then out in a system that allows things to work like in the fop universe. The first image is her actual colors, and the second is where I was bored and messed with the colors and I thought they looked nice. Thank you again!!!
Edit: I forgot to say that she has a tear drop scale but it doesn't work like a regular mind reader. Instead, Lezah has telepathy with Hazel. She was born/spawn during a ring moon (I think that's what it's called) so whoever she was near/created her, is now her telepathic partner/mind pen pal. :33

My younger sibling has just discovered a wings of fire obsession as you started this book club, so im spending a lot of my time lately talking about these books and chars, haha!
Something I keep thinking about, as an adult reader now, is the quiet horror of the knowledge that the SandWing war and prophecy were manipulated by the NightWings. The Talons of Peace truly believed in peace, and wanted to end the war, and that was used against them to further the goals of a tribe they barely even knew. Countless dragons suffered and died for a war that never needed to happen
(Six Claws has become my favorite character after reading his winglet - I can’t stop thinking about this)
NightWings are the number one bitches in this world. They kickstarted a war that they then "refused to take part in", they created orphans for a false sense of hope, and they were preparing to cause a genocide so they could take some territory. AND they lied the entire time about what they were capable of. They are such fucking assholes. I don't blame anyone for hating them on sight.

do you have anyhthing you would liek to share about your deltarune wof au?
yes
while I'm rewriting everything as I go tho bc this is an old au. the gist is that everyone currently lives in a town somewhere in possibility which has now expanded and p much became the normal social space. kingdoms just kinda welted overtime as royals ran into succession issues. they still exist and are a fair size. some host possibility towns in dual control. but p much kingdoms kinda lost their original spark so they're kinda like modern day where yes royals exist but they're more for negotiations or showing off than really controlling everything anymore. less dragons together more lost draconian species come out. drakes replace humans in this au and are p much wingless almost powerless mutts of the tribes lost from the Scorching. Kris is a sea/rain mutt who washed up in a small town in possibility and taken in by the dreemurs so that's how that happened. this au kinda plays around with the myth that animus magic ties into a soul, the newly added soul stored in the heart locket to ensure that 'kris won't lose their mind by the time they are granted full magic' which ofc isn't even true bc animus magic doesn't afflict the user with insanity but many still believe in the myth that it does. this may change in future chapters but thats my reason for the soul or the reader would it be in this scenario? getting injected into kris.
ok mechanics time so dark worlds work as the same and are created by animus magic which is most often done by the correct animus touched knife. idk what to call it but its darkstalker type of 1 creator but lost between dragons overtime. though a knight could get a knife blessed to be able to do it again or an animus can enchant it theirselves. might go with this second explanation instead.
castle town is now a fully fleged kingdom of Dreams like the ol days where there is a Dream Palace and ralsei lives there still as a prince. I could use the 'only princesses can rule' thing as a reason why he's just a prince not a King here but eh idk. he has animus magic granted by the dark world. well he's made from it but he normally didn't have it then at one point he did yay. always was moonborn tho. twice actually. strong foresight yet just emotion sensing. Lancer is rain/mud and is tiny and Susie is his bigwings. susie is the bigwing of the entire fun gang actually, especially in ch3 and especially especially 4.
knight time knight time. they're undefined. an allwing but so dark and homogeneous that you can't tell where each tribe is. one look they're a nightwing but another they're a melanistic icewing? or maybe a dark mudwing. hard to tell. they're also an animus.
now snowgrave. so I imagine rudy as a skywing. carol an icewing of royal ancestry bc why not. so dess and noelle are sky/ice. both are more sky than ice too but dess is like sunny sandwing genes level of sky, you can barely see the ice. dess breathes fire and noelle barely got frostbreath and it's very weak. ruling the town dess was a sort of heir before it was passed onto noelle. yeah its kinda a royal system not really and maybe. royal crown, almost equally leveled by council members. bc heir noelle is cool.
so when noelle first enters the dw she clearly appears more icewingy. also her ice breath is significantly better. in sbowgrave the thorn ring might give her like icescales or frostscales. inverted firescales type deal and eventually all that built up ice makes a deadly freezing ice breath beam thingy and now berdly is a popsicle.
ok final thing maybe. tenna's are now like big physical challenge type interactable games like RainWing royal challenges. first everyone has to travel through an area do some minigames and reach a minigame stadium after that they do physical challenge. the challenges after are the same. the rainwing stuff is just in the boards. tenna is granted magic by the knight so is king and queen too.
ok acc last one ch 4 looks more like fallen seawing citadel bc that would be cool and fitting. gerson is sea mud bc parallel with susie being partially mud and undyne in the au is sea.

wof scale color headcanons fuck canon yeahhh
All tribes under the cut if I did it right
NightWings - any hue as long as it's dark. NightWings consider darker scales to be prettier and pitch-black is seen as mysterious and aristocratic. The "silver" scales on the wings and trailing down the neck etc can be pastel colors or even iridescent. Some NightWings with distant SeaWing blood have glowing silver scales. Prophets also have a "third eye" silver scale, similar to mind reader's teardrops. Their scales have near invisible markings like panthers and black cats, such as stripes and rosettes. They also rust in the daylight like cats do!
SandWings can be a much wider range of sandy colors, from white to tan to yellow to brown to oranges and pinks even, orangey reds and some blacks. They tend to have patterns that are fractal-like or repeating rather than random splotches and such. The keratin on their stinger is the same color as their claws and horns. SandWings with more symmetrical patterns are considered prettier.
LeafWings typically come in greens, but also browns, golds, yellows, oranges, reds, and sometimes blues and even the rare purple. Like albino plants, albino LeafWings struggle to get nutrients as they can't produce chloroform, so if they don't have strong enough leafspeak they die pretty young. Summer born LeafWings have richer, more vibrant hues, autumnal ones are brighter and often have gold patches or patterns, winter makes scales cooler toned and duller colored, and spring makes lighter and shinier scales. LeafWings have a beauty standard of larger, healthier scales, regardless of color.
IceWings can be any off-white or silvery color, with slight darker markings and some vibrant cooler tones. Their scales have a natural shine, and lighter, even opalescent scales are the beauty standard. Commoners have brown and grey scales sometimes but these are definitely considered a mark of the poor. Another strived for marking is striations of any kind, especially those that are warm-toned or opalescent.
MudWings can be any brown, from deep red to planty green, light to dark and dull to vibrant. Potentially from proximity to SeaWings and distant blood, some MudWings have a "rusted" look of having warm base colors and markings fading to greens and blues. MudWings are the most common to be albino, leustic, piebald, or melanistic. Albino MudWings are white and pink, while leustics are white and yellowy- orange. They can also be shades of grey and occassionally black, and beauty standard is defined by the amount and appeal of the gold scales found on all MudWings.
SkyWings can be any warm color, typically red to orange, but also vibrant pink and magenta, rarely yellow, and even more rarely purple, usually only seen in the royal family. Brighter scales indicate more time outside and health, and though they can't be shiny or iridescent they love inlaying gems to create that effect. Blue scales are rumored to be a telltale sign of firescales, and though all firescales have blue scales, not all blue is firescales. Beauty standard prefers richer, darker colors, and watery or lighter shades are seen as weaker.
SeaWings can be So Many Colors. You usually find the blues and greens and sometimes pink and purples but the reef dwellers come in all the warmer colors. Interestingly, white and black markings are sparse and never the full dragon unless albino or melanistic. Piebald often results in pink or lavender marking, or even light cyan, and leustic SeaWings are known to be light blues and pinks. Vibrant, dark scales are preferred, and swirls are associated with power and royalty.
HiveWings all have some black scales, whether just a handful or nearly jet-black. Contrary to popular belief, Clearsight is not the sole reason for black scales; an interesting trait that started showing up after she arrived was pseudomelanism, a dominant trait causing all HiveWings to have black markings. Interestingly, albinism and leustism do not erase black scales, but albinism does soften them. Otherwise, HiveWings are typically warm toned, the general populace being yellow, orange and brown, red being an appealing color, and dark green being the rarest and most attractive. They can also being lighter tans and faded pinks, but the colors are looked down on.
SilkWings can be any color, and barring melanism, except black. Their patterns can change over their lifetime, gradually becoming more complex, vibrant, and appealing with age. All SilkWings are metallic or iridescent to some degree, except on the wing membrane. The wing membrane is either scaled and colorful (moth and butterfly) or translucent and shimmering (dragonfly). Circular, ring, or banded patterns are considered prettier and almost royal.
RainWings come in every color under the sun, yet never have shiny, iridescent, opalescent, or metallic scales. Individuals are recognized by resting patterns on theit scales such as circles, zigzags, splotches, or freckles than reflect secondary emotions or designs. Although they can replicate another's pattern quite accurately, the pattern they are born with lasts until death. In more competitive and regal places, RainWings are purple, pink, and yellow, and see showing emotion as weak.

The 🦂SandWing🌵 Monarch Backstory Post:
(A small warning: SandWing Monarch Reader is named Scorpion, a royal duel is depicted, the Eye of Onyx, implied abuse/abandonment, and death. If this is triggering for you, please don't read it)
They never thought the palace could be this big. Hall after hall full of statues and sculptures and tapestries, room after room full of beds and treasure and weaponry, lit by windows or lamplight. The courtyards full of dragons, all leaping to attention whenever they wandered by. Tables full to flowing with food and drink, all made by the best chefs of the palace. It all felt so... extravagant.
How they got here was... a hassle, to say the least.
The Kingdom of Sand, for the last forty years, had been ruled by a vicious, cruel, tyrant of a queen. A dragon of immense size and wealth, who would imprison any who opposed her and put the tribe through war after war, all for her own gain. Life felt near impossible to live through, especially in the Scorpion Den.
Scorpion grew up in the cut-throat town, a small dragonet who had to be cunning to survive. For them, they played rough, and if wronged, got their's. They had some sense of right and wrong, an idea that if you wanted something, you had to earn it, and once you earned it, it was yours. This was what led them to the SandWing Fortress, standing in the arena, facing the most cruel dragon they had ever met.
The queen, who didn't like any form of rebellion or upset at her reign, had her guards capture those who were against her, and tortued any who annoyed her, no matter their age or size or health. It didn't matter who they were, old or young, SandWing or not, rich or poor. The guards would drag them off, never to be seen again. And they had picked the wrong dragon. It was a small dragonet, scrawny and out-spoken, who the guards had captured, dragging them through the streets and towards the fortress. But, that dragonet wasn't just any dragonet. It was one of the few friends Scorpion had. The moment they heard what had happened, they had taken off, flying straight after the group.
When they arrived at the walls of the palace, they asked to seek audience with the queen, only to be laughed at and told to scram. It made them see red. They had bolted past, swift as an arrow, into the courtyard below, where they roared their demand to see the queen. And this time, they got their wish. The largest dragon they'd ever seen stalked forward, covered in jewels and gold, asking what they wanted for such a tiny thing.
"Your guards took my friend. I humbly ask you to please release them," Scorpion had said, bowing their head and wings slightly. And then the queen had laughed, cackling like a hyena, and denied their request.
"They're nothing more than a scrappy little whisp causing trouble. I'll let you leave, since you were so funny. But don't come back. Or the next time, I'll add you to my dungeons," she'd snorted. As she turned to leave, Scorpion had spoken up.
"No."
"No? Little dragon, may I remind you I am your queen. You listen to me, and you obey. Leave, now, or I'll kill you and your friend," she'd growled, her tail rising behind her.
"Then I challenge you, for the title of the SandWing Monarch!" shouted Scorpion. Their wings were raised, and their chest puffed out. They glared up at the queen, their tail rattling behind them. Gasps went up from some of the gathered dragons, as well as whispers. It had been forty years since the last royal challenge... And the queen before them had won that one...
"You?! HA! What an absurd thing to say! You wouldn't last a minute," muses the queen, chuckling.
"Well, if it's so easy, surely you wouldn't say no? Unless you're unsure?" Scorpion bit back, a hiss in their words. The queen stilled, and stared at them for a moment with her dark, cold eyes.
"I accept," hissed the queen, and in a harsh whirl of wings, she lifted off, pointing towards the large amphitheater behind the palace. "Meet me there, and we'll see who the proper queen is." And just like that, the surrounding dragons followed suit, soaring after her in gold and brown and white.
And when Scorpion landed in the middle of the arena, being watched by hundreds of dragons from the stands, all there to watch them battle their queen, they felt fear well up in their chest. But... they weren't backing down now. If they lost, their friend was as good as dead, and if they backed out now, they both surely would be. It didn't take more than that to steel their nerve, even as the queen landed in front of them, holding aloft something that changed everything.
The Eye of Onyx.
It was swiftly placed in a groove in the wall, and then, the queen was back, towering over Scorpion and holding her head high and tail low. In a sharp hiss, she called out, "The challenge starts NOW!" And then she was arching her tail toward Scorpion, ready to kill them.
Scorpion rolled out of the way, popping back up onto their talons, and lifting off, breathing fire at the giant. Sharp talons scratched their tail as they landed on her back, soon scurrying down to bite her neck. The queen roared, a loud, shrieking screech. Her tail had stabbed down, narrowly missing them by a hair. They then stabbed their claws into her shoulders, dragging them down as they slid under her stomach. Now, now they can strike. In a clean arc, they plunged their barb into her stomach, digging it in as deep as they could. But, just as quick, the queen drug them out from under her, her claws tightening around their neck as a pained hiss escaped her. Blood dripped onto the sand, staining the grains red and black. The scent of venom grew stronger, even as Scorpion was pinned down, the queen's tail raised high above them. Talons held them in a death grip, gleaming and sharp as obsidian.
"Looks like I win," the wicked queen whispered gleefully, and just as she was about to strike-
Bursts of lightning went across her body.
Sharp electricity coursed through her, the smell of burning scales and blood filling the air, as the queen fell back in a mad scramble. Scorpion gasped for air, struggling to their talons to stare at the dragon before them. The queen lay convulsing, smoke rising from her as she tried to scream, but to no avail. And then...
POOF!
A pile of blackened ashes where the queen once stood.
All was quiet for a moment, as Scorpion took in what happened. They glance to the hole where the Eye of Onyx rested, where they can see the crackle of electricity reflect off the black stone. With slow, shaking talons, they approached it, gently picking it up, and placed it around their neck. And just like that-
"ALL HAIL THE NEW MONARCH!"
"The queen is dead!"
"A dragonet?"
"THE SANDWINGS HAVE A NEW MONARCH!"
And, over the next month, Scorpion was fixing everything the old queen had done. Releasing the prisoners locked in the dungeons, replacing the old guards with new, more trustworthy ones, paying for damages done by the queen and those under her, and offering new jobs and food and water to the struggling kingdom.
Which led to now, a few weeks into their second month as the new SandWing monarch, and trying to get used to the weirdness of it all. Them? Queen? Or king, or monarch, or whatever they were now? It felt so weird. But, with the Eye around their neck, and the fresh death of the old queen in mind, most dragons haven't thought of challenging them for the throne yet.
Yet... they now have to deal with this...
"Your Majesty, may I ask what you would have us do?" asks a pale dragon, larger than Scorpion, and a lot more prickly. Their tail taps lightly across the stone floor, as though in thought. "Perhaps you should... invite a few new advisors to your staff? I don't trust the ones you have now." Their eyes watch them, curious.
"I know, I know. But, they do have useful advice. Hmmm... Perhaps I just keep the best two, and I replace the rest with better advisors? Yes, yes, good idea, Scorpion. Yes. Let's do that," Scorpion says to themself, and then stretch. They've gotten most of the old Scorpion Den dragons jobs here, in the palace, as guards or advisors or treasurers or teachers, hoping to give them a better life, and offer a more honest living...
Speaking of which...
"Is it time to see the dragonets who are here? I've heard w- I need to find them rooms, teachers, and some extra activities to do. Hopefully they aren't too stuck on this whole "monarch" thing," they say, and off they go, padding through the stone halls and sand courtyards, specks of dust dancing along in their wake...

could you draw blaze its her b day today and also OMG i love your art
thanks so much sun! you and @thatoneabsolutegoober (working on your other asks btw, I'll reply to you directly when I finish snowfall or lynx!) wanted to see Blaze redesigned, and while I may have missed her birthday by a mile, I can still give you my take!
Tumblr media
My Blaze redesign is set during the war of sandwing succession - I know Blaze hid just outside of the great ice wall where it wasn't too cold, but I still feel like she would have complained her way into getting a fluffy fur coat to wear for more warmth. I used some checker patterns and tan colors to mimic leather, while the fur itself has those little brown spots you always see (I think this is stoat fur, but a stoat isn't big enough to fit around Blaze's neck anyways so it doesn't matter.)
Most of Blaze's actual body is hidden under her massive jacket, but you might notice she has a plumper frame and smaller wings. I can't explain why, but I feel like it suits her a lot. Her scales don't have any unusual patterns, with most of the detail being concentrated at her wings - which have swirls near the top and a small flame-like impression near the base. I feel like it would be cool if all three sisters had fire/flame design elements given their names, but Blaze's should definitely be the least noticeable since she shows the least.. aggression. I've always interpreted 'blaze' as the beautiful way fire looks and linked it to Blaze's love of jewels.
On the topic of jewels, she doesn't wear any. Sorry Blaze, but you could only run away with so much and your icewing friends probably aren't very empathetic toward your hoarding hobby. I imagine Blaze can only get away with light jewelry/earrings during the war, since heavier items would slow her down and make her more vulnerable. I'm sure she argued about this with her icewing allies a lot.

I’ve got an idea for art but I’m struggling to find out what Xie Lian and a few others would be.
I’ve always been an avid reader of the Wings of Fire series and I am currently working on owning all of the books and graphic novels as they come out of course. So the idea I’ve had is what if I drew all the characters from TGCF as dragons from WoF?
One would think Hua Cheng would be a Nightwing,
Xie Lian is one I can’t think of. A Rainwing? Sandwing? Skywing? Silkwing? They all seem like good options,
Feng Xin I think could be a Mudwing,
Mu Qing might be an Icewing,
He Xuan would be a Seawing obviously but beause of Animus magic, he could disguise himself as a Mudwing ya know… Earth master,
Shi Qingxuan would be a Skywing,
Shi Wudu would be a Seawing,
Pei Ming would probably be Skywing,
Ling Wen would be a Nightwing,
Yin Yu would be a Nightwing,
Quan Yizhen would be a Sandwing,
Qi Rong stumps me a little too. He could be a Leafwing, the green. A Skywing, because he thinks he’s all that,
Guzi would probably be a Skywing dragonet,
Jun Wu could be a few things. Nightwing, Skywing, Hivewing. I’m leaning more towards Nightwing though for the reason of the volcano. Because of Animus magic he would be able to hide the scars and damaged wings,
Mei Nianqing would be a Nightwing. Seen as wise and intelligent perfect for a teacher,
Ban Yue would be a Sandwing,
Pei Xiu would probably be a Skywing,
Yushi Huang would be a Rainwing. Not because of the fact it’s a Rainwing but because they eat fruits and other things from the earth. It just made sense.
I might draw around and find out now.. that way I can see what I like the most for the characters and stuff…
