remember, handing over control of what content you consume to an algorithm is pretty much handing that control over to a corporation. so much of the content that algorithms tend to push either generate outrage or encourage you to buy something. next time you're scrolling your instagram feed or your tiktok FYP, pay attention: how much of what you see contributes to either outrage/division or encouraging consumption under capitalism?
take back control. it's so easy to let algorithms determine everything you see - take back control of at least some of the content you see. watch things that you want to watch, instead of what CEOs want you to watch, and remember YOU ARE NOT IMMUNE TO PROPAGANDA.

I've heard it called "video game compulsion" as opposed to addition, since it's a separate psychological process.
Interesting!
To clarify, I'm willing to accept that it's not addiction per se- what I'm not down with is the idea that, because these things are not the same physiologically and they're often used as right-wing talking points, that there's no such thing as unhealthy and compulsive consumption of porn or screentime. ANYTHING can become that vice, under the wrong circumstances. (For example, doll collecting is an offline hobby that brings me a lot of joy, but at stressful or stagnant times in my life, I've often struggled with compulsive doll-buying.)
I guess I'm just concerned about going too far back the other way- the old "fire bad; Edison is a witch" vs. "Elon Musk is right; nothing bad can ever come from technology" problem.

I think the conversation surrounding whether or not spending 12 hours a day on your phone counts as an "addiction" or not is completely irrelevant to the point that some people spend 12 hours straight on their phone, don't want to spend 12 hours straight on their phone, find it difficult to resist spending 12 hours straight on their phone, and face real-life consequences for spending 12 hours straight on their phone

You HAVE to love the moment after your phone dies and you are left hunched over the screen, your eyes deprived of the blue light to which they have grown accustomed, your mind deprived of the distraction from the horrors of your reality, to behold your own image (reverse Narcissus) in all its double-chinned, acne-scarred, chocolate-stained and cheeto-dusted glory, and horrified by who you have become, and you are full of guilt and (remorse) exhaustion, and you are (entirely, devastatingly) alone, and you blink, and you get up, and you (cry) (look in the mirror?) go plug in your phone and get some more cheetos
No, really, you have to love it. It's the law.

Curiosity Box
So a few years ago, I helped tutor some homeschoolers in history and it forever launched me down the rabbit hole of homeschooling content. One thing I think a lot of homeschooling families do really well is making learning fun and communal and that is something applicable to any age.
I've been seeing video after video about people's Morning Baskets and it inspired me to make an adult version. The goal was to give my partner and I an alternative option for hanging out together without screens that was easy to pick up and put back down so it didn't feel like a whole thing. We don't have to use it - it's simply another option.
Tumblr media
These were all from our bookshelves - though I do have a reader of Buddhist sutras for recitation coming as well as I wanted a spiritual component. What works well are readings that have sections. Everything here is either a collection of stand alone pieces or written with natural breaks in the prose.
You can select whatever you like, we just happen to have a lot of classics around but there's nothing superior about them or anything. I think poetry is always a solid addition though. Very easy to read one or two of.
More than a few of these came from discount books stores and other budget book options. But if you don't have any money at all, I'd suggest hitting up your local Little Free Library or simply putting in some library books that you don't pressure yourself to read all of.
I also included a Question Jar I made on our first Valentine's Day. It's just a jar with a bunch questions I printed off, cut out, and rolled up like fortunes in a cookie. We keep the old ones so we can use them again and see if our answers change. Basically free to make if you've got printer access. It's sparked so many good discussions over the years and I recommend it.
Currently, we're reading Kafka's Metamorphosis and we're surprised by how darkly funny it is. Much better than we remembered.
I'm considering adding some quick games we can play and some fidgets. I also thought having a feelings wheel and a check in prompt all lamenated up might be helpful since we both struggle with alexithymia.
Live alone? I still recommend this. I grab the Uncle John's Toilet Reader all the time solo. I used to use question prompts for getting to know myself when I lived solo. Throw your tarot cards or a journal in. It's still nice to have your screen alternatives all in one visible spot.

Restricting My Instagram Ussage

2025 March 17th daily log
Tumblr media
So today I finally decided to restrict my Instagram time to no more than 30 mins daily. Which does sound quite simple when I write it down like that, but I wish it was simple. So this is what addiction feels like. I am deeply unhappy, unhappy in general, but scrolling makes it so much worse. Even now as I write this I keep on getting this urge to check my phone, when I know that nothing important waits for me there. Checked it, as expected 0 notifications. So back to the unhappiness, I feel like social media is eating me alive, like I'm losing the grip on my life bit by bit. I am wasting away the time. I am missing out on so many activities that I do love.
I want to feel comfortable with bored again. Sure I still have my laptop and other social medias like tumblr on it, but for some reason it's not as bad here. I only use my laptop at my table. That gives it that nostalgic feeling of having to stand up and walk to it in order to do something. I think it's the main thing that keeps it from also causing damage. Phone on the other hand it fits in my pocket, it has everything, its too easy and comfortable and I think I hate it.
I hope I can finally find peace in life and the 30 min limit to instagram is just the beginning to my ''healing'' journey. I could feel so much better if I only tried a little harder.
I love drawing, reading, crafting, writing, doing yoga, talking, researching, watching movies but sometimes it's hard, when scrolling and watching other people do these things is so much faster and easier.
I feel like I ruined myself a little, and now I have to fix the damage that has been done.
I have been trying to inconvenience me a little in some ways so I'd stay away from the comfort of my phone -I got myself a very old second hand e-reader, cause I used to read on my phone while I commute to my classes. Reading this way keeps me way from getting distracted and looking at notifications. -I started collecting CD's. Not only cause I love music, but also I now love the feeling of picking out a CD or two before bed, getting all cosy in my bed and reading a good book. So much nicer than playing music from my phone. Spotify sucks.
Checked my phone like 5 times while writing this little log.

Achieving a milestone in your life.
Even if it is just a Tumblr milestone.
And even if the milestone simply proves my screen addiction.
