I Can Be Her Strength: Rise and her #1 Fan
In the later ranks of Rise’s social link, she talks about a girl who is her Number One Fan. She’s in middle school and never named, but she is crazy important to Rise, and she’s even part of why Rise goes back into show business. We already know some of why Rise is so important to the unnamed girl, but i want to talk more about why the unnamed girl is so important to Rise.
We first hear about the unnamed girl around her Rank 6 when her former manager, Inoue, is trying to get her to come back to the idol industry, and Rise explains who she is: a girl who was touched by an anti-bullying campaign she did at the school, and someone Rise deeply respects to the point seeing her letters makes her stop dead in her tracks to read again.
I'm going to assert that part of the reason the girl is so important to Rise is because of how similar she is to her. And I think Rise knows that, which is why she describes this "mutual respect" between them--they have a sense of what it's like to be each other. And how that motivates Rise through the end of her arc.
Isolation
Rise’s entire life has been spent isolated. When she was a kid, she was shy and often mistreated by her peers, as she mentions in Rank 7 where she talks about how she got into the idol industry in the first place. But despite skyrocketing into fame when she made the audition to become an idol, her isolation didn’t end—it arguably got worse. Rise was at the mercy of not just her peers, but her managers and strangers she’d never met.
It’s so bad that Rise hyperattaches onto Yu and develops a crush on him for just… not being dismissive or putting her on the Risette pedestal. She’s in that much of a terrible state when we meet her.
The unnamed girl is quite isolated, herself. She actually reached out to Rise for the first time to thank her for acting in an anti-bullying campaign and continued contacting her ever since. This is a much less romantic context and more admiration, but isn’t it similar to Rise’s attachment to Yu? The girl got attached because she actually felt seen by someone she admired, so she would speak to her about anything she could. It’s pretty clear the girl’s deeply lonely, much like Rise.
Also, Rise was a shy kid when she was young and was mistreated for it, as she mentions in her Rank 5.
So she’s always been pretty isolated, even before becoming Risette, since she mentioned being alone the whole time and mentions only really being spoken to because she became Risette.
Vulnerability
Both Rise and the young girl, due to said isolation, are in highly vulnerable positions to being controlled by others around them.
The girl struggles with making friends and ends up struggling with peer pressure, as shown in the epilogue rank with Rise.
And Rise has been straight-up exploited by the public, and has to deal with stalkers following her around even in her hometown, like on the day she was kidnapped--the Investigation Team and Adachi ended up chasing and arresting a stalker of hers trying to look inside her room. She's been oversexualized and literally can't have a partner because she's an idol. It’s why Himiko portrays herself the way she does as a Shadow. Both she and the girl are at the mercy of the people around them. In the scene leading up to her boss fight, Himiko is literally ranting about how angry that she has to put up these masks to be accepted and how desperate she is to not put one up, to not have to change who she is in order to be accepted.
It’s probably another reason Rise cares so much for the girl. She sees her younger self in her and similarities to how her life went. Which is emphasized by how much she thinks about her, which leads into my next point.
Inspiration
Rise and the young girl are both highly inspired by each other. I mean, when Rise explains who the girl is in her Rank 6, it’s just made abundantly clear what Risette can be—more than a mask. A beacon. An inspiration.

I think their similarities are the biggest reason why they’re inspired by each other-though, as Rise points out, the girl doesn’t know a ton about Rise’s situation, so she doesn’t know how similar she and Risette truly are. Which leads into…
Why Rise Returned for Her
It may seem like an odd decision for Rise to go back into the idol industry, since Rise’s story was about how much she hated the excessive control it exerted on her. But the girl was why Rise came back, so she could help people like her who didn’t have anyone to look up to and aspire to be like. Rise does acknowledge the pain she was in initially in her max rank, the way she was tightly monitored by her agency and the prying eyes of the public. So she resolves that instead of being in the agency she was in, she’ll be more independent. She’ll start over entirely, not going back to the same agency since she already burned bridges with Inoue in her Rank 8, and says that she’ll honor herself and Himiko’s desire to not have her smile be fake. Because with all the lack of control she had, she couldn’t have a genuine smile because she lived in fear of the public and had no real connections. She’s not going to live in fear of the masses constantly judging her anymore. She’s not going to be controlled by the masses anymore. She’s going to stand above them, push through, and just be… Rise Kujikawa. Whatever that entails. It’s a new day for her. And she’s going to be allowed to be herself.
I think Rise wants to be the person she wished to have there for her, back before she became Risette. The person that could inspire others to believe they were worth something. It’s further implied by her dialogue in her epilogue rank.
Because the girl mentions having to give into peer pressure in order to keep the questionable “friends” around her. It’s not a good send-off for the poor girl and she deserves better, to not have her personality forcibly shaped by others around her… much like Rise was. She’s in danger of going down a smaller-scale version of the same path Rise did as an idol, and Rise wants to put a stop to it and help the girl (alongside anyone else in that situation) see she doesn’t have to change and run away from who she is just for the sake of others’ acceptance. Which is exactly what Rise learned throughout her arc. And that girl, that very girl in danger of falling into the same trap Rise did, helped her realize what Risette truly could be: a beacon of light in the turbulence, where she could really be a role model to help protect and inspire the girl and others like her.
#Rise Kujikawa#persona 4#persona 4 golden#persona 4 spoilers#this is my fifth writeup centering her…#analyzing the fog#I know her birthday is coming up#I don't know what to do#but this girl is why I'm not Rise's number 1 fan#I can't disrespect her like that!!#i say “herself and Himiko” as if Himiko isn't a piece of Rise#but I said that because Himiko is the alert signal#we interrupt your irregularly scheduled programming of Kanji love to bring you Rise love#but I think it's really sweet and fitting for her character that she wants to help others in her position#she's really sweet it's crazy

I didn’t realize how deep the itch was until now, but Mentopolis is scratching a narrative/meta narrative itch that’s one of my favorite things as a reader and writer. Like they all have roles in the human body and in the brain and everything they do in their little body society correlates in real time to Elias Hodge’s body and getting to decipher what each relationship and interaction means both for the characters and for the mentality of Elias is mmmmm scrumptious delicious I love it I eat it up
More thoughts in notes
#ppl are already analyzing Conrad being left at the orphanage to Elias believing his conscience to be childish and fleeting#and ah there’s so many things AGSJDJD#like the blunt force trauma and going into shock and pain signals being stopped but then it LITERALLY comes to Elias’s attention that#something is wrong and he should be feeling pain#god and the cliffhanger of episode 2 is just asfsjdkdkdkkd#I LOVE the set design of this season and use of the projectors#and the table and marbles are so fun#and I love every player at the table#Hank and Alex are getting a bit of a spotlight which they super deserve but I’m raving about every cast member rn#not enough ppl are talking about Siobhan’s impulsivity#it’s so funny and catches me off guard every time#mentopolis#dimension 20#siobhan thompson#brennan lee mulligan#hank green

If the only people who laugh at your jokes or respond to you positively are bigots - and you yourself disavow those opinions - maybe it's time to analyze why it is that they feel safe around you. While you might not be intentionally bigoted in those ways, there is still a reason that somebody who's transphobic, anti-Black, whatever it may be, really, feels it is okay to be open about those bigotries.
#politics#like i can't count the amount of trans people with like 'trans lib NOW' in their bio who post things that transphobes react to positively...#...as in like 'i agree with this statement because [transphobia from their end]' like. please analyze why they feel safe around you!!#like what i'm talking about is attracting those people (bigots) because they've interpreted statements as a signal that you are Safe to them#would there be some things transphobes agree with me on? i guess so *but* i do not tolerate any transphobia...#...so typically even if they agree with something i have said they still realize this community/myself will just... not entertain it#there's a difference between 'bigots have found my account/me irl and are harassing me' and 'these people feel safe to be bigoted'#('because they think i am bigoted too')

Suddenly struck by the feeling like I'm someone whose intentions cannot be fully trusted in their eyes (placed to a background where that once in the past made sense) has weighted me down today. Maybe I'm overthinking it, I hope this is not the case.
At its best, it has always been a deed of generosity, friendship and thoughtfulness (curse my Leo moon). At its worst, my own romantic feelings got in the way and I unknowingly made gestures signaling I feel attracted to them, but always in the mature understanding it wouldn't help me get anything. I never meant to form any threat, or cross any lines for my own profit. I'm certainly not that kind of person and I strongly despise people who do.
And once again, I realize this is part of the current struggle. This is the mindset I'll exactly have to work thru + overcome in this situation, to rise above this. I can't make myself small again, go back to that shitty place in the past. Giving in to these feelings would 100% do that for me. We can't either. We've outgrown this crap.
Gonna kick my own ass, shift my focus. Be kinder to myself. Be a better friend later on. Get some good sleep.
#rant#delete later#i was doing better till this crossed my mind. analyzing my actions had me thinking i might have given off wrong signals. and i'm bummed#:~)#working old karma out i guess#if it's trust issues we're having. then there's still a bunch to unlearn

Since I just saw a post on the same blog about countering the spread of misinformation using the SIFT method I'm going to apply it here.
Stop
Is this post provoking an emotional response? Yes
Is it trying to? Also yes.
What do I already know about the source? Twitter screenshots on Tumblr are unreliable. I know nothing about the linked pmc19.com but it doesn't look like a government or university website url.
Investigate (The Source)
What can you find about the author/website creators?
the link to pmc19.com/data resolves, and that website does seem to be the source of these claims, although the current numbers are slightly off those reported in the tweets, likely because we're a week later.
pmc19.com links to a PDF with "Background on Dr. Hoerger and the PMC". There they discuss how Dr. Hoerger (who claims copyright of the webpage at the bottom) is trained in clinical psychology, has taught and was doing an MBA in 2019 on strategic management. It claims he's "an expert in personality, emotions, and affective decision science..." and mentions he did a masters degree wich involved a lot of stuff... And also epidemiology.
The PMC is apparently "The Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative" with unnamed members who have " led many projects to keep people safer during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic." and "The PMC dashboard is cited in grant applications, including at least two grants already funded. It has been cited by trusted organizations like the People’s CDC, news outlets, and scientific journals, including several papers published in JAMA journals."
Which really sounds like they think I should trust them at least as much as I trust people who write grants, and/or "The People's CDC" -- this makes me think they are unlikely to be an accurate source.
Here's Dr. Hoerger's bio at Louisiana Cancer research center:
https://www.louisianacancercenter.org/people/michael-hoerger-phd
It says "Dr. Hoerger conducts psychosocial research to reduce the emotional and physical burden of serious illnesses. Dr. Hoerger is an international expert in psychosocial oncology as well as pandemic mitigation." And the lists a bunch of psychology stuff. Literally never mentions pandemics again. If he's an "international expert in pandemic mitigation" a) I'd expect him to work somewhere other than a Cancer center b) I'd expect his bio to mention his pandemic mitigation work. Maybe he's new to all this pandemic stuff? He certainly doesn't claim to be an epidemiologist on the pmc website, just to have worked on a project that involves it.
When I google "The Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative" the second result is this webpage which questions their methodology and suggests that their model is incapable of making accurate predictions -- claiming it's always going to be biased towards whatever happened on the same dates last year -- both low and high. (I'm summarizing and interpreting a huge amount here,so read it yourself, and the source is just a blog post so not intrinsically more credible...) But it is note worthy that the main 3rd party discussion of this organization is someone questioning the utility of their predictions.
https://buttondown.com/abbycartus/archive/we-need-to-talk-about-the-pandemic-mitigation/
What is their mission? Do they have vested interests? Would their assessment be biased?
Their mission seems to be to "track" or predict cases of covid -- but like better than the real CDC and epidemiologists. Presumably this is born out of concern for immunocompromised individuals, or boredom, or needing a project for a Strategic Management MBA, or distrust of Official Sources.
They appear to have a vested interest in pandemic mitigation, and therefore alarmism and possibly in not agreeing with official sources. Their assessment may well be biased!
Do they have authority in the Area?
No. They mention precisely 0 epidemiologists working for or with them. I don't see a reason to trust their models more than my physics grad student friends who made pandemic models on a lark in 2020.
Find Better Coverage
The official CDC (Centers for Disease Control) webpage on Covid data is here:
https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#datatracker-home
It indicates lower numbers than last year for everything they track, numbers that are kind of ticking up in recent weeks, but numbers that are forecast (if I'm reading that right) to reach a smaller peak than in prior years.
Notably the CDC is not making any directly comparable claims about number of people infected or infectious. Or how many might be infected next month. I believe this is because these are fundamentally unknowable from the data they have, and that speculating on them would be irresponsible for public communicators of science. Sure, one could create models that predict those numbers, but publishing the results to the public without context on the uncertainties of the models would be irresponsible since people might make life or death decisions like wearing a mask or getting a vaccine based on those bad predictions. Or they might just rage at people online who disagree with them. Idk, I'm not a science communicator.
Don't trust the CDC? Tough. The New York Times ended their own covid tracking in 2023 saying:
After more than three years of daily reporting of coronavirus data in the United States, The New York Times is ending its Covid-19 data-gathering operation. The Times will continue to publish virus data from the federal government weekly on a new set of tracking pages, but this page will no longer be updated.
This change was spurred by the declining availability of virus data from state and local health officials. Since few states report more than once a week (and some no longer report data to the public at all), the weekly data reports from the C.D.C. have become the most reliable source of information on the virus’s spread.
There new webpage is here and it was last updated in March 2024, it says:
These Covid tracking pages are no longer being updated. Get the latest information from the Centers for Disease Control, or find archived data from The Times’s three year reporting effort here.
John's Hopkins University has this to say:
On March 10, 2023, the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center ceased collecting and reporting of global COVID-19 data. For updated cases, deaths, and vaccine data please visit the following sources: Global: World Health Organization (WHO) U.S.: U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
So yeah, reputable sources have stopped caring and link you to the CDC as the place to get your info.
Trace Claims, Quotes, and Media to their Original Context
The pmc19.com website does appear to be the original context for these claims. Thank you OP for linking that.
My Verdict:
These claims are misinformation. Specifically they claim numbers that are based on a model that was not created by subject matter experts, that disagrees with the trends reported by the CDC and it's epidemiologists. Either government employed epidemiologists are wrong and no university epidemiologists want to call them out on it... Or the PMC is wrong. Since they aren't epidemiologists... They're probably wrong. Moreover: If you don't trust the CDC you shouldn't The PMC because in their technical apendix they claim to use CDC data to make their projections. The only way the PMC could be right is if all other epidemiologists are wrong about the COVID pandemic and how to interpret wastewater and hospitalization data.
The PMC and Dr. Hoerger are engaging in academic sounding BS. They have incentives to be alarmist and fear monger, and don't seem to care or understand that they're using a model that probably doesn't have predictive value.

Data source: https://pmc19.com/data/
#misinformation#Covid-19#the actual pandemic is misinformation#because it sure as shit isn't covid right now#assuming you trust literally any way of measuring that#you are not immune to propaganda#I appreciate that it is pro-masking propaganda#but it also erodes trust in government#and institutions#and makes people live in parallel realities where they're easier to manipulate#covid misinformation#pandemic misinformation#covid#the pandemic#how to investigate misinformation#Am I really qualified to analyze the accuracy of their model#let's be honest: no#however: anyone can recognize that their past predictions do not line up with other CDC data#so one must be inaccurate#and the criticisms of their model sound right to me#and their description of their model makes it sound like the criticism is correct#they say their weighting the events of past years into their prediction#and there are reasons to suspect that is going to give fucked up predictions#like I would expect that to work well for repeating periodic signals#an assumption that I think it is bad to make about diseases!#there's actually an article in The Atlantic that cites this guy and epidemiologists and the epidemiologists basically say:#'we should expect waves at different times than in prior years'#so... lots of reasons to doubt the PMC model

Things I'd originally put in the tags plus other stuff that I want to add to the actual post:
Duke is incredibly frustrated by Tom Bombadil because he's a mystery that Duke can't solve. Jason argues that Tom Bombadil isn't supposed to be solved. Their arguing leads to the development of multiple, incredibly extensive Tom Bombadil murder boards that no one else in the family comments on, because Duke can go on about this shit for hours, and as soon as you get him going, Jason will materialize and cause problems.
Jason resonates a lot more with the movie ending than he did with the book ending. Something about the life-changing journey ending at a home that remains entirely unchanged just hits him harder than the Scouring of the Shire. He absolutely cries when Samwise gets welcomed home by his family, and Duke doesn't give him any shit for it, just bumps shoulders with him.
Jason keeps trying to get Duke to read the Silmarillion and Beren and Lúthien and Duke is not having it. "But you said Beren and whatever is already in the other one!" "That's just one version! You need to read all of them for the full experience!" "NO!" "YES!"
Duke ends up reading them all anyway because Jason is an asshole who guilts him into it by running around outside in the rain for days and getting sick on purpose and then refusing to come inside until Duke proves he read the first chapter of both.
Duke gets Jason back by pretending to have a panic attack and instead locking him in the panic room and refusing to let him out until he watches the Soviet version of LOTR in its entirety. This turns into a competition to see who can find the most cursed Tolkien-inspired media adaptations, and they both succeed in psychologically traumatizing each other as well as themselves. Bruce eventually has to intervene when they go missing for like 36 hours straight only to be found in a fucking cult meeting in Poland because apparently the cult leader uses a magic puppet version of the Roverandom to brainwash people and Duke refused to lose to the mutated corn orcs from the last cult.
Every Tolkien poem Duke reads is a poem he overanalyzes to hell and back. Same for Jason and any piece of literature that makes him feel something. Duke likes patterns and puzzles - figuring out the author's intention and how they go about fulfilling that intention. Jason is more Death of the Author - finding his own interpretations under the layers of meaning. Put these two in a room together, give them a topic, and in under an hour they'll have half a thesis and thousands of words worth of fan fiction. And another murder board.
On Jason's third rewatch of Return of the King: "For Frodo." "AND SAMWISE YOU FUCKING BITCH."
I think movie buff Duke Thomas should force Jason to watch the LOTR movies and literature nerd Jason Todd should force Duke to read the books.
They should make a movie night out of it and then a weekly book club that's really just Jason periodically hacking comms during Duke's patrol so he can yell at him to finish each chapter like a deranged English teacher that follows you around at work. And then they should get into heated arguments about Tom Bombadil; and Duke should get really invested in overanalyzing all the poetry in the book trilogy; and Jason should rewatch all three movies like seven times at least so he can scribble thoughts into the margins of his paperback copies, write dissertations in his head about the effectiveness of different story changes, and cry at Sam's "But I can carry you!" without having to stop reading.
And then they should repeat all of this with The Hobbit. They're both a little psychotic about it and the rest of the family is tired.

I am sitting in perfect posture and wearing a tie when carefully selecting which letter should come next in the keysmash. Analyzing it for sincerity and aesthetic appeal. Backspacing a few times, changing a letter or two until it is perfect.
"i think ur good bro aghjskd"
I press send, then go back to editing my spreadsheet.
#theo.txt#the posture part isnt true i get uncomfortable if i sit in the same position for more than 5 minutes at a time#i do carefully analyze my keysmashes though. i use them like a dog uses sneezes during playfights to signal levity

armand’s costumes are such an interesting data point re: his nebulous sense of identity.
when analyzing any costume, there are always many factors to consider: the setting, the character’s personal taste and economic constraints, storytelling concerns like tone and genre, etc. with armand, we also need to remember that he’s 500 years old and violently disconnected from his human origins. everything he wears has an element of disguise, selected to blend into a new environment.
armand was enslaved as a child in 16th century delhi, and barely remembers his mortal life. unlike louis - who can return to new orleans after 80 years and reconnect with his past - armand has no home to return to. his whole backstory, even his name, is rife with traumatic subtext, leaving him with an obsessive need for structure and control. this adds an extra layer of meaning to costuming choices that initially seem like straightforward menswear.
armand’s 1940s wardrobe is very put-together - primarily three-piece suits and coats that make him look wealthier and more formal than louis, who is purposefully dressing down. most of these outfits are tailored to bulk up armand's frame, leaning into the "maitre" persona. and like his business-casual dubai wardrobe, he always leaves his collar open. when i interviewed costume designer carol cutshall, she described this as a symbolic power move, signalling that he's an apex predator who doesn't need to protect his throat.
my personal interpretation is that while armand clearly likes to look good, he has a complicated relationship with attractiveness. he doesn't always want to draw attention. his color palette is shadowy (black, grey, brown, olive green), and he’s much less flashy than the other Théâtre vamps. however when he’s feeling confident and flirty, he becomes more of a power-dresser - for instance his hunting outfit with the big coat and sunglasses, or his habit of wearing kohl.
interestingly, most of armand's 1940s costumes set him apart from the coven. the Théâtre vampires dress like cabaret performers, embracing a lot of period-specific styles. by contrast armand is more timeless and neutral. in fact, due to the relatively minor changes in men's suits over the past 100 years, there's a lot of overlap between his wardrobe in the 1940s, '70s and 2020s:
the rest of the Théâtre squad share an unofficial uniform of boldly clashing monochrome patterns with pops of bright color. meanwhile armand has a very plain wardrobe, emphasizing the image of him as a businesslike authority figure surrounded by zany artistes. he only wears subtle stripes on a few occasions in the '40s, reflecting the recurring prison motif we see in lestat's trial suit and (most famously) the dubai penthouse bedroom:
if we ask the question, "what does this person like to wear?" there are easy answers for lestat, louis and claudia. we understand their tastes, and the motives behind them. but armand is more enigmatic. we can recognize through-lines in his wardrobe, but his "taste" is dominated by whatever role he's currently decided to embody, whether that's a parisian theater director or a real estate mogul in dubai.
the times when he appears to have the most fun with clothing are when he steals a pair of sunglasses from his human dinner (!) and when he's pretending to be rashid. in other words, when he's explicitly performing for an audience. "real armand" is still a mystery.
(i may write more about armand's dubai wardrobe later, but for now, you can find all of my iwtv costumes posts on this tag!)
