Climate change: do we have to debate to do something about it?
youtube
I think the one thing that would make this video perfect is this fact; most adult Americans, way more than half, believe in climate change and don’t fall into any of the categories Hank listed. When you realize that, you realize the opportunity in this moment in history; unlike last decades, we don’t really need to waste much effort debating. We already have the majority. What we need to do is make our government more democratic. Once it actually is reformed enough to respond to the majority, we can actually robustly push through more policies. So for once we don’t have to split effort between very important priorities. Make our government more of a democracy (undo the backsliding of gerrymanders, unlawful high circuit and Supreme Court, electoral college, etc) and we can actually move at a speed that matches the problem. Still a tall order. But it’s the difference between catching up on a semester of studying in two weeks vs two nights when you realize this. Run for local office. Join the dem party and change it from the inside like right wingers did republicans from the 70s onward

It is. 37 degrees outside. And the fan is only helping so much. And I haven’t had anything since breakfast but it’s too hot to be hungry. I’ve been trying to draw all day bc I’m bursting with ideas but the heat is leaving me completely unable to make anything look even half decent. If I die bury me in the depths of Siberia so I never feel heat again

one of the things that's the most fucking frustrating for me about arguing with climate change deniers is the sheer fucking scope of how much it matters. sweating in my father's car, thinking about how it's the "hottest summer so far," every summer. and there's this deep, roiling rage that comes over me, every time.
the stakes are wrong, is the thing. that's part of what makes it not an actual debate: the other side isn't coming to the table with anything to fucking lose.
like okay. i am obviously pro gun control. but there is a basic human part of me that can understand and empathize with someone who says, "i'm worried that would lead to the law-abiding citizens being punished while criminals now essentially have a superpower." i don't agree, but i can tell the stakes for them are also very high.
but let's say the science is wrong and i'm wrong and the visible reality is wrong and every climate disaster refugee is wrong. let's say you're right, humans aren't causing it or it's not happening or whatever else. let's just say that, for fun.
so we spend hundreds of millions of dollars making the earth cleaner, and then it turns out we didn't need to do that. oops! we cleaned the earth. our children grow up with skies full of more butterflies and bees. lawns are taken over with rich local biodiversity. we don't cry over our electric bills anymore. and, if you're staunchly capitalist and i need to speak ROI with you - we've created so many jobs in developing sectors and we have exciting new investment opportunities.
i am reminded of kodak, and how they did not make "the switch" to digital photography; how within 20 years kodak was no longer a household brand. do we, as a nation, feel comfortable watching as the world makes "the switch" while we ride the laurels of oil? this boggles me. i have heard so much propaganda about how america cannot "fall behind" other countries, but in this crucial sector - the one that could actually influence our own monopolies - suddenly we turn the other cheek. but maybe you're right! maybe it will collapse like just another silicone valley dream. but isn't that the crux of capitalism? that some economies will peter out eventually?
but let's say you're right, and i'm wrong, and we stopped fracking for no good reason. that they re-seed quarries. that we tear down unused corporate-owned buildings or at least repurpose them for communities. that we make an effort, and that effort doesn't really help. what happens then? what are the stakes. what have we lost, and what have we gained?
sometimes we take our cars through a car wash and then later, it rains. "oh," we laugh to ourselves. we gripe about it over coffee with our coworkers. what a shame! but we are also aware: the car is cleaner. is that what you are worried about? that you'll make the effort but things will resolve naturally? that it will just be "a waste"?
and what i'm right. what if we're already seeing people lose their houses and their lives. what if it is happening everywhere, not just in coastal towns or equatorial countries you don't care about. what if i'm right and you're wrong but you're yelling and rich and powerful. so we ignore all of the bellwethers and all of the indicators and all of the sirens. what if we say - well, if it happens, it's fate.
nevermind. you wouldn't even wear a mask, anyway. i know what happens when you see disaster. you think the disaster will flinch if you just shout louder. that you can toss enough lives into the storm for the storm to recognize your sacrifice and balk. you argue because it feels good to stand up against "the liberals" even when the situation should not be political. you are busy crying for jesus with a bullhorn while i am trying to usher people into a shelter. you've already locked the doors, even on the church.
the stakes are skewed. you think this is some intellectual "debate" to win, some funny banter. you fuel up your huge unmuddied truck and say suck it to every citizen of that shitbird state california. serves them right for voting blue!
and the rest of us are terrified of the entire fucking environment collapsing.

I'm not american so I don't keep up but do you think kamala can win against Trump?
I really don't know, love. She wouldn't have been my first choice. But my hope is that if she's the nominee, she pulls in a strong vice presidential candidate who balances out her weaknesses.
People have got to realize this is less about voting for Kamala Harris and more about protecting democracy, protecting the Supreme Court, protecting women's rights, protecting LGBTQIA+ rights, protecting the earth from climate change deniers... The list just goes on and on. Trump is such an extreme threat that I literally don't give a fuck what anyone thinks about Kamala Harris. If you don't vote for her, you've got everyone's blood on your hands.

I am so sick and tired of the falsely politicized science denialism that I see day in and day out.
If you disagree with any of the following statements, your opinion has no correlation to reality. The following are not opinions. They're statements of fact. Politics are irrelevant. If you disagree with any of them, you are objectively, measurably, factually wrong and you can go fuck yourself.
•Climate change is real and it is being caused by the fossil fuel industry.
•Vaccines don't cause autism. They save lives. (Also screw you if you think the autism is worse than smallpox or measles.)
•Covid is not a hoax. It is not overexaggerated. It is a deadly disease that has resulted in more deaths than the entirety of the Napoleonic wars, and would have resulted in more if not for the vaccine developers that science deniers insist on ignoring
•Trans women are women and trans men are men. And just so were crystal clear, that means that sometimes women have a y chromosome, and sometimes men only have X chromosomes. Science is not transphobic.
•Homosexuality has been found in 1500 different species. It is extremely natural.
•Humanity came about as a result of evolution.
•Bonus round: the Earth is not flat. Humanity figured this out over 2,000 years ago. Catch up. If you've ever worked for the government, you know that it couldn't keep a secret like this for longer than a week

The current global war fucking sucks because we're like desperately trying to fight misinformation and xenophobia and conspiracy theory and meanwhile Putin's government is actually paying people to make massive bot networks on social media and IA generated articles with great search engine optimization to destabilize european politics and push everyone towards the extreme right and it's ducking working. The french protests seem extremely violent from outside ? That's Putin working to create a feeling of "insecurity" in the country. Antivaxx movement evolving into general distrust for everything scientific and even everything academic ? Putin. Climate change deniers ? Manyyyy many bots on Twitter with coordinated harassment campaigns against researchers, all of it originating from Russia. A lot of tankies online in favor of accelerationism under the guise of political alliances not working so might as well elect the Nazis now ? You fucking guessed it babes.
How the fuck are we meant to fight conspiracy theories when the current political climate sounds like a vast xenophobic theory ?

And this is why one does not fuck around and find out with the weather: 95% of the time, the weather wins.
Me shaking every climate change denier in impotent fury.
Although I guess every cloud has a silver lining.
