Social Media Ethics

The current state of social media ethics: what trends are happening in the industry? 

We are currently living in one of the most inflammatory times in the world.  Current trends include how to handle misinformation, making people take accountability with inflammatory language, how to include inclusion and diversity, how to address people who are unaware of their actions and behaviors (Freberg, 2021), the push for authenticity and security as it pertains to social media.  

What are two current cases related to social media ethics? 

Facebook has not escaped its fair share of ethical issues.  In 2020, they were accused of spreading falsehoods during the election and of selling its users' data.  Here are two current cases relating to social medica ethics: 

According to Lathan et al. (2023) Facebook has reached settlements with the Federal Trade Commission for documented cases of privacy abuses despite the CEO's claim that users knowingly choose to share their information and data with the platform.   

Additionally, Lauer (2021) discusses the ethical failures of Facebook where he states that Facebook is ground-zero for anti-vaccination and pandemic misinformation, with the 26-min conspiracy theory film “Plandemic” going viral on Facebook in April 2020 and garnering tens of millions of views. Facebook’s attempt to purge itself of anti-vaccination disinformation was easily thwarted when the groups guilty of proliferating this content removed the word “vaccine” from their names.  During 2020, there was a lot of misinformation as it pertains to Covid. 

These are just two cases that highlight privacy abuse and spreading misinformation within Facebook. 

Outline the current code of ethics for social media by a professional organization you would be interested in joining as part of their social media staff. 

I would love to work with the City of East Providence.  Below is a brief outline of the current code of ethics for social media for the City of East Providence.  According to the City of East Providence. (n.d.): 

Social Media Policy: City of East Providence 

I. Introduction 

Purpose and Introduction 

The city of East Providence has established social media guidelines to guarantee consistency and alignment with the mission.  These policies ensure uniformity, support their mission and protect the city’s character.  

II. Authorizations & Approvals 

Authorizations 

Approval from the Chief Information Officer (CIO) or the City Manager is required before any city department can create, use, or deactivate a social media account. 

Only the CIO or the City Manager can approve employees to  manage, edit and post on the official social media accounts. 

Account Creation 

Employees need approval from the CIO, City Manager, and department head to create a social media account in the name of the City or any other city agency. 

III. Posting 

Approval Process 

Prior to posts going live, the City of East Providence sets up procedures to get posts approved. 

Posted Content 

All content must follow the social media guidelines set by the CIO and City Manager and should be relevant to the department’s mission, services, and goals. 

Identification 

All social media pages should clearly show that they are managed by the City of East Providence and must link to the City’s official website on the main page of any social media site. 

IV. Content 

Posts 

Don’t post anything that doesn’t directly support the mission, services, or objectives and avoid sharing or approving content that infringes on copyrights, trademarks, or intellectual property. 

Removals 

The City has the right to delete or remove any content that doesn’t follow this policy. 

Protected Information 

Don’t share confidential or “for official use only” information and avoid posting anything that could compromise the security of the internal systems. 

Public Safety 

Don’t post information about public safety events involving the Police, Fire Department, or Public Works. 

V. Behavior 

Professional Communication 

Keep all communication professional and avoid using inflammatory or inappropriate language. 

Respect Intellectual Property 

Always respect copyright, trademark, and intellectual property rights. 

VI. Violations 

What Happens if the Policy is Broken? 

There are procedures in place to address any violations of this policy.

Brands/professionals with strong social media ethical codes: what brands are utilizing proper social media ethical practices? 

Dove -  At Dove(n.d.) they recognized that the definition of beauty was skewed so they began a campaign to redefine the definition of beauty.  By using real stories, helping children build confidence in their bodies, creating safe and equitable spaces for Black women, providing support for postpartum mental health issues and providing support to male parents. They also have a mission to protect the environment.  The best thing about their website is that it includes articles, videos and testimonies from a diverse audience.  

TOMS-  According to TOMS (n.d.), TOMS displays strong ethical practices on social media by remaining transparent and letting the public know how their money is spent, they provide shoes, clean water and mental health support.   Their rating is a certified B which means they have and enforce a high standard of performance and accountability throughout their company.  

Ben & Jerry- This ice cream company out of Vermont is known for its activism, protection of human rights, environmental protection, restoration and regeneration, bringing awareness to racial injustices, fairtrade, climate change and LGBTQ+ rights.  Their views on wealth distribution are posted on their website and they are very transparent with how they make their ice cream.  According to Ben & Jerry (n.d.), they take their 3-part mission of product, economic and social a step further by breaking down to include the rights and dignity of refugees, democracy is in our hands, campaign finance reform and climate justice.  One of their latest endeavors is voting, discussions about women’s prisons and how to combat air pollution.  

Are there any professionals that you feel are practicing strong ethical behavior on social media? 

Bill Nye- Uses his platform to educate about science, critical thinking and misinformation.  He is an advocate for climate change and believes in evidence-based discussions in a positive manner. He also promotes diversity and believes in accuracy. (Nye, n.d.) 

Neil de Grasse Tyson -Also uses his platform to educate about science in simpler terms, he helps break it down so it’s easily understandable.  His engagement is always positive, thoughtful and he encourages open conversations with all.  I admire his strength when he corrects science information. Not only does he discuss science, he also delves into science literacy, exploration, extinction, spirituality, culture and politics. (Tyson, n.d.) 

Support your choice with evidence. What are some takeaways you can bring forth in your own practices?  

Again, I do not utilize social media unless it is necessary.  But I would just use common sense when utilizing social media when I must, takeaways include: having time limits, post with a purpose and be respectful as it’s my responsibility to not engage in cyberbullying and not to post deceptions.  The main thing I take away from Bill Nye and Neil de Grasse Tyson is their courage to  post things that people do not want to believe or listen to,  and they do it without fear.  So, when I do utilize social media, I will use critical thinking skills to courageously post the truth and stand by it. 

Key concepts and issues: what main concepts do you think are necessary to adhere to for your own personal conduct online?  

The main concepts I think are necessary to adhere to my own personal conduct online are: watching my tone, being responsible for my words, maintaining respect for myself and others, having peaceful conversations and not being antagonistic, not willingly posting items I know is false, keeping myself and others private information private, mindful of the language being used, not promoting falsehoods, review the information for accuracy prior to posting, checking sources of videos or information prior to posting, staying humble and showing others empathy.   Just because social media posts can be anonymous and you’re a person behind a keyboard, there still needs to be an understanding that anything posted reflects the person posting or sharing. (Freberg, 2021) 

What to do and what not to do: what main concepts do you feel strongly against and want to make sure you avoid on social media? (20 pts) 

The things I feel strongly against and avoid on social media are posting inflammatory racist or hate  language,  spreading misinformation, not checking sources prior to posting, sharing personal details that are not mine, oversharing any personal details, jumping to conclusions, being argumentative, ignoring comments, participating, or promoting  unnecessary drama, stealing content and passing it off as my own, having a fake online persona, being part of crowd mentality, sharing inappropriate content, pictures or videos, being a troll, posting things in anger, being extremely negative/posting negative things, manipulating posts for my own benefit, being a bully or spreading hate, and avoiding copyright infringement. (Freberg, 2021)

Everyone's afraid of clowns but I think you have to understand what context they're in matters, for your own health and safety,like, for example:

Clowns at a circus/fair/carnival- this is their natural habitat, they are happy and content. As long as you keep a respectful distance you're completely safe

Clowns at a birthday party/rodeo- off leash but highly trained and disciplined, their trainer is nearby for emergencies. They have been bred for close contact and even enjoy interaction with people

Clowns at a store grand opening- this is a concrete zoo for them. For your own safety do not approach too quickly or they might startle and lash out

If you do see a clown in the wild, stop, and back away slowly. If the clown begins making balloon animals be prepared to fight, you cannot run, they are much quicker than you and WILL catch up. A quick strike to the nose should be enough to subdue them. In the event of a clown bite seek medical care immediately, as symptoms will begin setting in quickly.

If you have not sought a medical professional within 24 hours of the bite, the changes will be permanent. In a case like this, trained professionals will escort you to the nearest clown College where you will be accepted into the fold. But this is a worse case scenario, and only about 10% of clown bites have this outcome :)

Hello, everyone. My name is Ethan Todd and I've been expanding my activism to multiple platforms. My main platform so far has been Instagram, where over 100 Palestinian families reached out to me before I had to turn people away and refer them to others who can help.

"What? I thought I'd support the winning team." He shrugged, a cheeky grin spreading across his face. You and Harry got invited by the Mclaren F1 team to watch the Silverstone Grand Prix from the paddock. As a Formula 1 fan youself, you were excited to see the cars upclose. To watch the mechanics to the pitstops, engineers do their things (idk what they do lmao) and to watch Max Verstappen overlap the whole grid like seven times. Even since you were a little kid you were amazed by those cars driving freakishly quickly. Now, several years later you get to experience it right infront of your eyes.

"Look, there's Lando!" Harry pointed out, spotting your friend talking to a group of mechanics. You approached Lando, who broke into a wide grin as he saw you. "Hey! There are my favorite YouTubers!"

You beamed. "Lando! It's so good to see you. How's it going?"

"It's been wild but amazing," Lando replied, glancing at Harry. "And I see you've managed to get Harry in the right gear this time."

Harry laughed, rubbing the back of his neck. "Yeah, I had a little help with that."

Lando gave you two a playful nudge. "So, who are you rooting for today? Besides me, of course."

You laughed. "Well, McLaren, obviously. But I'm also excited to see how the Brits perform. It's going to be an interesting race."

"That's the spirit," Lando said, his eyes twinkling with excitement. "Alright, I better get back to my team, but I'll see you guys later? Enjoy the race!"

You and Harry found a spot in the back of Landos garage, it had a view on the screens but also the pit-stop. The whole race went by fast. The moment the lights went out Lando tried his hardest with a deserved P2 at his home race.

Except Harry keeps thinking about Tom (when he's on dates with and sleeping with and fucking Ginny), and he thinks it's because he's jealous and weird and has issues (true), but he really loves Ginny.

But what's really happening is Harry is obsessed with Tom and unintentionally using Ginny to get stories about Tom and fantasizing about the other man to near-stalker levels.

Is Tom also obsessed? Does he realize Harry exists?

Had to share all these gorgeous details, like the TEXTURES on this models are just gorgeous! All that filigree and bead detailing is raised which made painting it much easier, but still very tedious (so worth the results though). This was my first time painting a face bigger than tabletop mini scale, and boy was I intimidated. Had some friends point me to ball-jointed doll makers and learned about detailing faces with chalk pastels, so I used pastels to give his cheeks some colour, blush the tips of his ears, and make the shadows under his eyes. I could go back and add more colour/texture to his hair but I think its best if I leave it, lest I play with it too much and end up ruining things. I have to keep reminding myself that just cause I can see things in macro lens photos, doesn't mean I'm actually able to go correct those things 😅

Regardless, I'm so so happy with how he turned out, and its crazy that I can look at this and go "me!!! I PAINTED THAT!! ME!!!", and now I have a stunning model of everyones favourite lil rat bastard (affectionate) vampire mans💕

Thena laughed at the man's joke, who was happy to receive her payment with a sleek smile. His hand even floated down to her shoulder. Their exchange continued, but that hand felt the need to linger.

Gil watched it the entire time.

Thena was on her doctor mandated break, from both performing and even teaching for at least two weeks. He was happy to take care of her at home, but almost at the end of her time off, she was getting restless. So, seeing a show seemed like a great idea.

Thena had a great time--at least he thought she did. He had asked if she knew anyone in it but she hadn't recognised any names from the show program. That made this even worse.

The male lead had just happened to recognise Thena, purely from running in similar professional circles. Gil was proud of it! She was an amazing ballerina, of course she should be recognised for it. That wasn't the problem. This guy was the problem.

"I'm honoured I could finally meet the Swan herself," he schmoozed right in her face.

Gil tugged at his tie. He called her that, thank you.

"I've seen so many of your shows, I should be the one dying to meet you," he continued. His hand left Thena's shoulder, but only to trail down her arm to clasp her hand in his. He was really pushing it.

"Nonsense, you're the crown jewel of your company," she countered his flattery, although she hadn't yanked her hand out of his yet, much to Gil's distaste.

"If only I were the crown jewel of yours." Okay, this guy definitely knew what he was doing. Gil stood straighter as the man even raised Thena's hand to his lips.

"Oh," she blinked, blushing faintly as he did so.

Gil cleared his throat loudly. He had stood by for enough of this. He moved in without a thought to the jostling of everyone. He elbowed the man out of his way and captured Thena's waist in his arm. "Sorry, we're late for something."

"Gil!"

"Of course," the man sighed dramatically. He waved as Thena was dragged away from him. "It was a pleasure, ma cherie!"

"I'll show you pleasure.

"Gilgamesh," Thena huffed as he ushered her into an empty dressing room and slammed the door behind them. "What is-!"

He pulled her close, taking her lips in his. He cushioned the back of her head with his hand, although her back hit the door as he pressed as close as he could get.

Thena moaned against his lips, their tongues moving fluidly and her hands on his cheeks. Her shoulders bunched up, surprised by his urgency.

He moved his shoulders, eager to get her elbows out of his way. He moved his hands from her waist to grasp her behind through the light layers of her pretty dress.

"Gil!" she all but yelped. He hoisted her, hands grasping her behind so he could move them from the door to the mirror. He plunked her down onto the table of it, her shoulders pressed against the cold glass. She gasped. "What are you doing?!"

But he wasn't in the mood. He was in a very different mood. He grasped the insides of her knees to help them wind around him. These things were the perfect height. "You want pleasure?"

"Gil," Thena attempted to scold him, but he could watch the tiny twitches in her face as he trailed his hand up the inside of her thigh.

"You can have it," he breathed into her ear. He dragged his teeth over it, enjoying the flush of red that followed. She shivered. He used the other hand to trail over where he had watched that asshole do exactly the same. He would replace that man's touch on Thena's body with his own. "Because you're mine."

"Gil," she bit her lip as he latched onto her neck. His one hand continued to trail lightly from her hand up to her shoulder, back and forth, up and down, so lightly it was almost ticklish. But he reached her shoulder and planted it more firmly. "We can't."

"What did I just say?" he whispered roughly, his other hand reaching its goal and easily pushing aside the white lace she was wearing. He remembered it well; he had watched her select that exact set and then joke about not going.

Thena whimpered as he skipped any sort of warm up and instead pushed in just the tips of his fingers first.

"Miss Thena," he teased, pushing in to the second knuckle. "What did I tell you?"

"You're mine," she panted, her hands finally moving up his chest and around his neck to his back to pull him closer.

He chuckled. It was close enough. He liked rendering his Swan all ruffled and speechless. He dove, dragging his teeth from her neck down her clavicle to her cleavage. "I said you're mine."

Thena let out a deeper moan as he pushed his fingers in completely, simultaneously using his teeth to drag down the front of her dress. It had been sitting just off her shoulders, teasing him all night.

He reached for the back zipper, freeing her breasts completely. Its tightness had offered her some lift. He admired the way they bounced, now at gravity's mercy again.

"Gil, please," she whimpered, moving her hips with his fingers.

He could multitask. He continued to watch the rhythm of her breasts, eventually bending his head to take a nipple between his teeth. He bit a little more firmly than necessary. Her back arched but he pushed his thumb into the dip of her collar bone, not needing any pressure to keep her shoulders against the mirror. It was fogging up.

Thena whined as he pulled his fingers away. She was panting for breath and a light sheen was fighting the setting layer of her makeup. "Jealous and a tease?"

If he could give her behind a little smack, he would. But he kept her firmly planted on it, deliberately pulling both hands away from her to undo his belt. She watched with hunger in her eyes. "This what you want?"

She nodded.

He undid his suit trousers, pulling himself out and grasping himself at the base. Fuck, he was hard. "Say it."

"I want you," she managed, her voice full of breath.

He bent her knees more, forcing the skirt of her dress up and out of his way. He gripped the flesh of her inner thigh, a fine mix of natural fat and firm muscle. It clenched as he massaged little circles with his thumb closer and closer to her hip. "Ask for it."

A flash of stubbornness passed over her. He raised his eyebrows, just touching his tip to her warmth.

Her eyes lowered as she looped her arms around his neck, "please, Gil?"

"Please," he moved closer to her ear again, letting her fold her swanly form around him. He nipped at her earring, "what?"

"Please," she whimpered again, the red from her ears shooting down her neck. "Fuck me."

"Good girl," he congratulated her as he pushed in. She moaned, her knees tightening around him before stretching out and then closing in again. "You're mine, aren't you?"

"Yes," she gasped, her whole body adjusting to him in this position as he kissed along her throat.

"And this," he grinned, rolling his hips and hitting up and forward within her. Oh, this was a good spot. She tightened around him and he nipped at her cleavage again in thanks. "This is mine."

"Yes," she moaned, trying to urge him into moving more.

He leaned forward, pushing them both more firmly against the mirror behind them. It was completely fogged up from their heat now. Thena's bare shoulders squeaked against the glass. "All mine?"

"Yes," she whined, digging her heel into the back of his thigh.

"Say it," he teased again, moving lightly, as if they had all the time in the world for him to fuck her in a strange theatre full of other patrons.

"I'm all yours."

"Good."

Gil slammed their hips together, picking up a completely frantic pace. He gripped his arm around Thena, keeping her at the perfect precipice, close enough to the edge for him to push all the way in but also safely planted on the counterspace. These things were not meant to be fucked on; he could hear the braces of it in the wall as they moved.
