Pharmacists at Higher Risk of Suicide than General Population
The pandemic put a spotlight on burnout and suicide among physicians and nurses, but until now, less was known about the mental health of pharmacists.
In the first study to report pharmacist suicide rates in the United States, a team of researchers led by Kelly C. Lee, PharmD, professor of clinical pharmacy at UC San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, found that suicide rates are higher among pharmacists compared to non-pharmacists, at an approximate rate of 20 per 100,000 pharmacists compared to 12 per 100,000 in the general population. Results of the longitudinal study were published May 13, 2022 in Journal of the American Pharmacists Association.
The most common means of suicide in this population was firearms, followed by poisoning and suffocation. The prevalence of firearm usage was similar between pharmacists and the general population, but poisoning via benzodiazepines, antidepressants and opioids was more frequent among pharmacists.
The data also provide some insight into contributing factors, including a history of mental illness and a high prevalence of job problems. Job problems are the most common feature of suicides across health care professions.
For pharmacists, Lee said job problems reflect significant changes in the industry in recent years, with more pharmacists employed by hospitals and chain retailers than small, private pharmacies more common in the past. The responsibilities of a pharmacist have also grown considerably, with larger volumes of pharmaceuticals to dispense and increasing demands to administer vaccines and other health care services.
“Pharmacists have many more responsibilities now, but are expected to do them with the same resources and compensation they had 20 years ago,” said Lee. “And with strict monitoring from state and federal regulatory boards, pharmacists are expected to perform in a fast-paced environment with perfect accuracy. It’s difficult for any human to keep up with that pressure.”
Future research will further evaluate which job problems have the biggest impact and how the field can better respond. In the meantime, Lee advised pharmacists to encourage help-seeking behaviors amongst themselves and their colleagues.
“Mental health is still highly stigmatized, and often even more so among health professionals,” said Lee. “Even though we should know better, there is such an expectation to appear strong, capable and reliable in our roles that we struggle to admit any vulnerabilities. It’s time to take a look at what our jobs are doing to us and how we can better support each other, or we are going to lose our best pharmacists.”
— Nicole Mlynaryk
If you or someone you know may be considering suicide, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255 (En Español: 1-888-628-9454; Deaf and Hard of Hearing: 1-800-799-4889) or the Crisis Text Line by texting HOME to 741741.

I wish doctors realized that there is more than one way for mental illness to end your life. And I don't mean what you think I mean. What I mean is experiencing the death of other things- the death (or eclipsing, which can feel like a death) of your personality, the death of working towards your goals, the death of self-reliance, the death of your hobbies and interests, the death of relationships, maybe the death of a career you went to school for, the death of future possibilities. There is a fracturing of yourself- which life has a way of doing, anyways- but it feels different when the origin of this great rupture is in your own mind.
At least in this country, and especially for tough cases or treatment resistant cases, these other deaths do not seem to matter. They'll tell you to go to therapy for that, or chalk it up to a psychiatric comorbidity (a catch-all personality disorder, for example), or say it is the nature of the illness. Regardless, I still believe that the last thing any doctor wants to see is their patients dying. So why have these other deaths become so accepted in the medical field? I implore doctors to watch for these other deaths, because it does feel like a passing for the patient- see if it affects your care. Maybe it will be a bit more difficult to just send a patient on their way with yet another script and forget about them until the next appointment in three months. Maybe it will be a little more difficult to remain comfortable in a field of medicine that is stagnant, lacks accessibility and resources, and is just a short boulevard with a drive between doctor's office and a hospital that has a fast-moving revolving door.
I ask you to just stop and think. Mental health care does not have to be a dead end. The status quo in mental health care isn't working for most people seeking treatment, and if it does it usually isn't sustained. Things can get better. Mental health care can be a medium through which patients can save their own lives, but things have to change.

On the NHS
I'm sharing this because apparently people really aren't aware of how little doctors are paid.
Tumblr media
The context behind this was that this junior doctor has decided he will leave if they don't get the pay increase they deserve as he can't provide for his family on this wage.
Junior doctors, nurses, paramedics and other health care professionals will spend years doing unpaid work as part of their degree and graduate to a crapy starting wage (btw nurses and paramedic starting wage is much lower).
Not only this, theses healthcare professionals will also have to use their salary to pay for courses/exams that they need to sit in order to progress.
So the next time you hear someone say 'It's not about the wage it's about patient safety'. No it is about the wage as well. They deserve more.

Desperate for heart surgery for their baby, a family feels the effects of pediatric hospital shortages | CNN
CNN  —  Even before their daughter was born in June, Aaron and Helen Chavez knew she would need heart surgery. Doctors expected her to have an operation around 6 months of age. When it became apparent in September that it would have to happen much sooner than expected, the Chavezes said, they endured an agonizing monthlong wait for a bed to open at their local children’s hospital so baby MJ…

Medical Tourism: Risks of Medical Tourism
Risks of Medical Tourism
There are several risks of medical tourism. Some of these include legal risks. Service providers and operators may not be bound by their legal obligations during the transition. They may also be exploring a "vacuum zone" that conflicts with existing laws. Infections can also be associated with medical tourism. Therefore, it is important to understand the risks before making any decisions.
Health risks
Tumblr media
Many health care professionals are concerned about the risks of medical tourism. These concerns are often couched in the context of larger health equity issues. Experts in the field of infection control and blood safety confirm that medical tourism raises health risks. For example, some patients returning home with infectious disease could put other patients at risk.
Medical tourism
Medical tourism is a common practice of traveling to another country for medical treatment. Millions of US citizens have gone abroad for treatment. Most commonly, they go to Mexico, Canada, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Many of these patients do so to receive care that is less expensive and more culturally compatible. Unfortunately, the health care practices of these countries can lead to serious illnesses and complications.
Common Complication of Medical Tourism
Among the most common complications of medical tourism are wound infections, bloodstream infections, and donor-derived infections. Patients may also contract diseases such as hepatitis B and C.
Patients traveling to other countries are also at a higher risk of contracting antibiotic-resistant infections. Infections caused by highly drug-resistant bacteria can cause life-threatening conditions for tourists.
Cost savings potential
Medical tourism offers many advantages, including a lower cost of care. Because the services are more affordable than in the US, medical tourists can save money on the cost of their medical care. The potential savings can be significant, and medical tourism can even be a good option for people without health insurance. However, the amount of savings can depend on a number of factors. First, some medical procedures are not covered by US health insurance.
In addition, medical tourism can bring in a significant source of revenue. Large trusts and insurance companies may find it useful to attract medical tourists to their facilities. Medical tourism is likely to remain a niche market for the time being, but it is expected to be lucrative in the future. Further research is needed to understand the economics of medical tourism.
Additional Source of Income
Medical tourism can be a valuable source of additional income for the NHS. However, it is important to note that it can also pose a number of disadvantages. While it may allow patients to bypass domestic wait lists and save money, it can also increase costs of follow-up care.
For example, a recent study in Alberta showed that bariatric surgery performed in Alberta is more costly and has higher complication rates than local bariatric surgery.
Impact on local health care system
It can help overcome the shortage of health care professionals and infrastructure in the destination country. Moreover, it can help clear a backlog of patients in countries with long waiting lists. This also allows governments to provide comprehensive health care coverage without incurring additional costs.
Generally, this process occurs in the private sector, but in some cases, public hospitals have opened private clinics to attract foreign patients. Many private health care providers have also upgraded their facilities to attract international patients. This has led to a significant improvement in the quality of the health care system in developing countries. The increased availability of high-quality facilities and a diverse medical expertise can also reduce the country's dependence on foreign hard currency.
Doctor’s Demand
In some developing countries, the demand for doctors may be three times greater than the number of residents living in the country. As a result, a shortage of medical specialists could occur.
In addition, foreign patients will compete for the same medical resources with local residents. The shortage of medical staff in the host country may exacerbate health inequities in the country.
Infections associated with medical tourism
Infections associated with medical tourism can be serious. Some patients may not be aware that they have an infection until they return home. This can lead to a delayed diagnosis, reduced functionality, and even financial hardship. It is important to seek internationally accredited medical facilities, and make sure that all clinicians perform the necessary tests.
Many medical tourists are also exposed to antibiotic-resistant organisms when they are abroad, and this could pose a threat to public health. This makes it important to collect detailed information about medical tourism patients before they leave the country. This information can help reduce the incidence of infections associated with medical tourism. In addition, patients should be warned to seek medical care immediately if complications develop.

I've been thinking about Bad Parents Jack and Maddie, and how they aren't great even in canon. So like, Vlad actually interacting with them more, as his obsession switches Danny, and just...eyes opening nd falling out of love with Maddie. So he realizes he needs therapy, but as he is what he is and what he has done, well, that makes things difficult. So, Harley Quinn?
I basically almost answered this with a mini rehash of "the Fenton family safety situation is often misrepresented by newer fans who haven't seen a lot of the show" but I mostly realized that wasn't the point, so let me get my act together.
You have activated my trap card, which is "I used to do psych stuff as my main field before I did library stuff", and I can't believe that Harleen Quinzel, known criminal and incredibly visible villain, would still have her license. Like. Even excepting the crime stuff, having her license revoked due to breaking the Hippocratic oath, or straight up having an ethics board boot her personally, I don't think Harley Quinn would have prioritized the NJ medical license renewal. That has to be attended to once every two years. Failure to keep up to date means no practicing in the state of NJ, baby.
If this is happening, Harley is offering services Under The Radar.
Like...probably this is through a service like Betterhelp. Almost no one tracks the actual paperwork for the advisors on Betterhelp. I can see Harley signing on in her pajamas eating ice cream as she gets nostalgic for the life she led when she had stuff going for her career-wise. Vlad, meanwhile, saw a youtube ad and is flinging spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks.
Anyway, Vlad and Harley sharing illegal psych sessions over Betterhelp while eating ice cream and talking shit is such a visual. I wish them all the best.

lots of health professionals act like looking at how fat you are or seeing you have a pre-existing ~psychiatric illness~ and deciding that's what's causing whatever malady you're seeing them for is ~practicing medicine~ but in reality that's just prejudice and bigotry, baby. don't fucking listen to them.
they can't know what's causing these problems if they don't examine you, run tests, and actually work to understand what you're experiencing. that requires talking and listening to you - not making you wait 40 minutes in the lobby just to spend 5 minutes in the room with you and treat you like you're overdramatic and lazy. you deserve better. so much better. and this still applies even if it is related to what they assume it is.
