read Blame! as a teen & remembered feeling overwhelmed abt the setting- impenetrable, bloated, nonsensical. Expanses stretching out like an open maw that consumed entire planets, regurgitating emptiness in its wake- and remembering now that this is the hollow carnage of its AI. I just remember reading page after page not even understanding the story, just seeing the city it portrayed with haphazard layout that resembled viscera more than architecture, towers upon towers that looked like mechanical stalactites, built but with no purpose-
a city bigger than the solar system constructed completely by AI- completely dead and without a soul, not meant for human inhabitants, not meant for anything at all, just a ceaseless gnaw. Like a cancer

So, I'm assuming you've see today's EAPS episode (Eclipse has reached his limit of Virus influence, even Charlie can't cure him now).
My question to you; how would this play out in the Returned to Roots Eclipse AU you've basically made.
(Y'know, the one where Eclipse grabs the kids and leaves EAPS world behind, taking the virus to SAMS new world with him and his kids? Eclipse has the virus still, right? I think you said that in the first comic/post you made, where he just shows up outside SAMS house.)
So, with it canonically being shown on how it affects him, what kind of panic is induced to the Celestials when Eclipse just randomly shuts down?
(Trying to check my inbox more often so :D!)
That AU was made on May 15 (I think?), so heres some layout :3 :
For the first week: the SAMS cast would be getting Eclipse comfortable in the new dimension before getting Eclipse's kids to join them (this was a safety measure from Eclipse so he knew they were safe in this new home).
By the second to third week: Eclipse, Solar, Moon and Monty would be working on a cure for the virus! Of course, since they have nothing to work on, Moon and Solar would go back to the former/old dimension the SAMS cast was in and find whatevers left of the cure that was implanted in Ruin.
HOWEVER, as you mentioned, the virus would take full effect on Eclipse by now; by this point, Eclipse wouldve passed out during trying to help them make the cure (might make some art for that? Im not sure lol).
Naturally, as a family, they all immediately panic and care for him;
•Terra (formerly Earth) would make sure Eclipse sleeps and eats well.
•Solar and Monty make sure Eclipse's systems dont go haywire.
•Moon and Sun watch over Eclipse most of the time, but when they cant, Cosmos (formerly Lunar) would do it for them.
Since they had time, the cure for it wouldve been done a few hours after the effects showed on Eclipse (possibly just the next day after :D), leaving the family relieved. Eclipse would still be a bit dazed, but he'll be fine after just a few days since the cure has been given to him. This AU is undoubtedly my excuse to make them a happy family.
To put it short: Eclipse would show the effects, yes, but he'd be healed after just a short while since the cure wouldve been done by then. :)
(sorry for yapping :'D!!)
For anyone curious, the AU referred to is in this post! Heres its p2 and p3 :)

Family portrait of the Zwo-nmu planetary system (the system to which Gymnome--Eaurp Guz's homeworld and the setting of train puzzle dot exe (title pending)--belongs).
Labelled version and more below the cut.
The Zwo-nmu system, home to Guz's homeworld Gymnome, is like many planetary systems dominated by gas giants. In fact, the only object that would count as a planet in the IAU's books, which resembles the terrestrial planets in our solar system, is tiny mercury-like "Rabbit" in the gap between Cool Ember and Omen.
Omen swept into the inner system, disrupting the late stages of planetary formation, but capturing Oldsky and Rival as moons and Gymnome as a trojan (which later destabilized into a horseshoe orbit). Glerbuh, Omen's near twin by mass, sucked up most of the remaining gas disk, but there was still plenty of volatile mass to generate the four ice giant planets Glarpi, Shpler, Eauah, Flibul, and most likely the recently discovered Schmitt.
Despite no other gas giants posessing moons as massive as Omen's, each of the large satellites of the other gas giants are still worth considering. Not much is yet known of the moons of the ice giants, but it is known that Glerbuh's diffuse ring is generated by the eruptions from about a dozen small rounded moons, which as they trade eccentricities with one another go in and out of periods of dramatic cryovolcanic activity.
The original system layout drawing produced in early 2023.
Scale comparison between our Sun and Zwo-Nmu, and their planets.

The Solar System Legacy Challenge: Change of Plans Gen 1 pt.72
Madisons phone lit up the dark room. It had been going off nonstop for the last two hours the current time was 3:40pm. She stared at the screen, scrolling through the mix of notifications from Beckett and, to her surprise, Paris.
She slid her finger over Paris' messages deleting them without opening them first. When she got to Beckett's thread she clicked on it and started reading. The earliest was from around 1:30pm but she'd missed them while she was sleeping.
1:32pm Beckett: Just got off the train. Hope you're ready for today! I planned something...well you'll see.
1:47pm Beckett: Hope you are dressed warm it's chilly out. I think it might rain. 2:01pm Beckett: Just got to the statue in Sable Square.
2:30pm Beckett: Hey. I just tried to call you. 2:50pm Beckett: Did you forget about me? lol 3:10pm Beckett: Madison?
Then he'd tried calling again.
3:18pm Beckett: Is everything okay?
3:20pm Beckett: Did I do something wrong? I know I was kind of excited on the phone this morning, But I was just looking forward to seeing you.
3:21pm Beckett: I hope I didn't upset you.
3:30pm He called for a third time. That was the call that had woken Madison up. By the time she was fully awake to answer she had missed his call. He had sent three additional messages since.
3:33pm Beckett: Please just let me know you are okay.
3:35pm Beckett: I don't care if you bail on our date. I just want to know you're alright. 3:37pm Beckett: Please Madison Im so worried.
She closed the messages when her phone started to ring again. Beckett's picture filled the screen and she answered. She felt desperate to tell someone about what had transpired between her and Paris, plus she had been anticipating seeing Beckett for a week. She didn't want him to believe she had just stood him up.
Madison: Beckett. I'm so sorry.
Beckett: I'm so glad you're safe.
He sighed with relief.
Madison: Sorry, I worried you. I um..I laid down for a while when I was getting ready. I had a headache.
Beckett: Hmm. Maybe you're coming down with something.
Madison: Yeah, maybe
Beckett: You sound pretty out of it. If I haven't scared you, maybe we can try this another day? I'm sorry about all the calls and messages.
Madison: No don't apologize. It's nice to know someone would be looking for me if I was missing.
Beckett: It makes me sad to know you think no one would look for you. On the other hand, it's a relief you don't think I'm a crazy person.
She could imagine the handsome smile on his face as vividly as if he were standing in the same room.
Beckett: You should get some rest. I'll cal-
Madison: Beckett wait! I'm not in the mood to go out anymore, but..you're already in town....maybe you could come over?
There's a short pause.
Beckett: To your home? Are you sure?
Madison: Yeah. I could use the company.
Beckett: Is everything okay?
Her voice cracked as she replied.
Madison: No..it's not.
Beckett: Send me the address.
She texted him her home address without a second thought.
Beckett: I'll be there soon.
Previous Next
Beginning
Sidebar: I wanted to explain the photo layout for this post. The first photo below the title picture is of Madison already reading her messages. The next two photos of her are meant to show 2 hours earlier showing her sleeping through Beckett's arrival and all of his messages. The fourth photo of Maddy is when Beckett's third phone call woke her up. So if you think back to the first photo it would technically be the photo after she woke up from the missed call if they were in chronological order. I didn't want anyone to think she was reading her messages and then went back to sleep randomly.
I'm so sorry I tried to get ALL complex with the order and timing and when it came together it made sense to me (I'm the writer of course it made sense to me. Duh!) but I wasn't sure it would make sense to anyone else.
I'm sorry if my explanation just added more confusion.

Everything You Need to Know About Crystals: Bloodstone
Bloodstone (The Blood of Purification)

Color: Green with bright red splatter. Some have white mixed in
Rarity: Easy to obtain
Hardiness: 7
Type: Chalcedony
Chakra Association: Root, Heart, Solar Plexus, and Sacral
Deities: Brigid, Dione, Persephone, Christ (believed to be his blood in Christian mythology)
Birthstone: March
Astrological Signs: Aries, Pisces, Libra
Element: Fire
Planet: Mars
Origin: Australia, Brazil, China, India, USA
Powers: Open Doors and Remove Walls, Prosperity, Strength, Courage, Purification, Vitality
Crystals It Works Well With: Red jasper, Black Tourmaline, Hematite, Amethyst
How It is Created: Bloodstone is a variety of chalcedony quartz with a distinctive dark green color combined with specks and clumps of red jasper inclusions
History: The distinct blood red marks within the stone are often used for talismans because it is believed that the stone protect one from evil spirits. In medieval times, it was believed the blood specks came from the blood of Christ while he was being crucified as his blood dripped down onto the rocks. Legends such as the tale of Percival, one of King Arthur’s knights who went on the quest for the Holy Grail, illustrate the combined qualities of bloodstone. Percival was a knight trained in the physical aspects of combat, but his quest took him into the spiritual realms, teaching him lessons about illusion and the power of unconditional love. In ancient times, it was believed that this stone could heal, banish negativity, and guide people who were lost. It was worn by warriors on their arms to help heal wounds during battle and to stop the bleeding quickly. It was also worn on the breast of a warrior to feel them with courage and strength. It was said to keep their morals high, even after very heavy casualties.
What It Can Do:
Banish evil spirits and negativity
Heal wounds and one’s mental state
Used to draw money and increase wealth
Clams fear and anger
Ensures victories in legal battles
Balances and ground the energy in one’s heart to promote action
Gives courage and teaches on how to avoid dangerous situations
Heal the ancestral line
Benefits blood-rich organs, regulates and supports blood-flow, and aids in circulation
Egyptians believed it shrank tumors
How to Get the Best Out Of: Wearing it as a bracelet or something on the arm area and a necklace near the heart is a great way to utilize bloodstone to its full potential as it works well near the bloodstream and blood-rich organs like the heart.
How to Cleanse and Charge: Cleanse it by running it under water or bury it in your garden for a deeper clean. Charge it by placing it under a full moon or using green and red candles around it.
Crystal Grid:
General Well Being
Layout: Lemniscate
1 clearing crystal
1 light-bringing crystal
1 immune-balancing crystal
Crystals to Use:
Bloodstone
Green Aventurine
Que Sera (Llanoite)
Quantum Quattro
Cherry, Rose, Smoky, or Emerald Quartz
Hold your crystals in your hands and state your intention for the grid.
Lie down.
Place a clearing crystal beneath your feet (sit up to do so).
Place a light-bringing crystal above your head.
Place an immune-balancing crystal halfway up your breastbone over the
higher heart chakra.
Use the power of your mind to connect the lemniscate over and around you.
Remain in the grid for five to fifteen minutes, focusing your attention and breathing gently
into the immune-balancing crystal. If you become aware of energy that needs to shift out of
your body, send it down to the crystal at your feet for transmutation.
Remove the crystals in the reverse order in which you laid them, then cleanse them
Heart and Immune System
Layout: Lemniscate
1 grounding crystal for the feet
1 pinkish-burgundy crystal or immune stimulator
1 emerald-green crystal or immune soother
Crystals to Use:
Emerald
Emerald Quartz
Fuchsite
Cherry Quartz
Rose Quartz
Ruby
Garnet
Green Aventurine
Lepidolite
Bloodstone
Que Sera
Quantum Quattro
Hematite Quartz
Hold your crystals in your hands and state your intention for the grid.
Sit down on the floor.
Place a grounding crystal at your feet.
Lie down fully.
Place one crystal above the heart on the higher heart
(thymus) chakra.
Place one over the heart seed at the base of the breastbone.
Check your heartbeat—it will quickly indicate which crystal should be placed above, and which below. If your heartbeat feels too rapid or is pounding heavily, or if it feels too slow and heavy, switch the crystals around.
Use the power of your mind or a crystal wand to trace the lemniscate, crossing the circles over your heart.
If dizziness results, breathe deeply and send the energy down toward the crystal at your feet for transmutation.
When the layout is complete, remove the crystals in the reverse order in which you laid them. Stand up slowly and ground yourself by stamping your feet.

Hiya, I've been looking around all day on Tumblr today. I've hit a state of wanting to reorganize our SP just enough to look cohesive but still allow alters to be creative with their profiles. We all absolutely love the movie Treasure Planet. Would there be a chance you could do a simple SP folder layout, dividers, and anything else you would want to add? If you can't do just Treasure Planet we are more than happy to accept space-themed items!
Thank you and we hope you take care of yourself, drink water, take meds, and focus on yourself as you need to <3 /p
I'm sorry this took a bit! but I hope this fits what you wanted :]
I ended up doing a space theme as I wasn't sure how to do a treasure planet theme admittedly
Feel free to recolor parts of this if wanted & I'm sorry for the lack of showcase of the dividers , I just wasn't sure how to do that. Also be warned this was not designed for pretty organization since I was not sure if that was wanted at all

Magneto and Science ↪ Part 1
the subtle hum of iron in blood, steel bending at his fingertips, the pull of Earth's core beneath his feet, wires and circuits speak, magnetic flux arcing between his hands, reading Einstein's equations, the muted thrum of power grids in distant cities, the metallic taste in the air before a storm, the distant buzz of high-voltage lines, the scent of ozone, strewn blueprint, the infinite spiral of energy, late night lights, monogrammed notes, wrapped books, late night discussions
↪ 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐍𝐒
Magneto has many unfinished manuscripts and half-completed papers
⠀ ⠀𝐅𝐈𝐄𝐋𝐃𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐒𝐓𝐔𝐃𝐘: Electro and other types of magnetism, geophysics, interaction of magnetic frequencies with forces (plasma), theories on atoms / quantums / magnetism, mutant powers, ferromagnetism, fluid magnetism, metamagnetism, renewable energies, mechanics and engineering, Quantum-mechanical origin of magnetism, material science, space-centered development, the solarsystem, magnetars, earth's core and nature's magnetism, spacecraft propulsion based on manipulating planetary magnetic forces, Superconductivity Mechanisms, magnetic fibers (his suits)
⠀ ⠀𝙌𝙪𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙪𝙢 𝙈𝙖𝙜𝙣𝙚𝙩𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙢𝙖𝙙𝙮𝙣𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙘𝙨: Ambitious, albeit speculative, the interaction between quantum states and large-scale magnetic fields in plasmas. These theories suggest controlling the behavior of stars and cosmic bodies with magnetism—a kind of stellar engineering. Though untested, some astrophysicists have unknowingly referenced his work under pseudonyms in papers on solar magnetic field anomalies.
The science of Magneto and Gambit interacting creating a Magnetar or Black Hole -- not even Sinister mixes that.
His published works carry pseudonyms.
⠀ ⠀After his time on Asteroid M, various blueprints surfaced on inventions. Various particle colliders and electron molecule systems have been adjusted to the newly recognised modells.
⠀ ⠀His works push the boundaries of conventional scientific thought. Also quoting 'my powers' is ... debatable. (searching for proof of magnetic monopoles. reconcile the monopole with standard model inconsistencies, leaving behind cryptic hints for any physicist lucky (or unlucky) enough to find them.)
⠀ ⠀𝐓𝐇𝐄 "𝐌𝐀𝐆𝐍𝐄𝐓 𝐄𝐅𝐅𝐄𝐂𝐓": Electromagnetic Biophysics. A term coined to describe the phenomenon of magnetic fields influencing biological systems. It is oftentimes also used otherwise in sociopolitic studies.
He has funded numerous scientific research projects, often under pseudonyms. He is but a benevolent supporter ... (He gets along with Doc Ock and Bruce Banner occasionally)
⠀ ⠀Genosha utilised a large portion of his blueprints on renewable energies. The entire city layout was revolutionised for the purpose and therefore an almost "Solarpunk" city.
In later years, scientists call upon him for cross-referencing work and data in molecular and frequency studies. Also, sometimes he is also good for checking if a supercollider has a hole...
⠀ ⠀He does not like nanotech as it is more difficult to grasp.
⠀ ⠀Imagine some human scientist not realising they are basing all their work off of Magneto, the scary mutant terrorist. You try to avoid his study but you keep finding the name.
Scientific Magazines with his name and interviews
Young Mutants in school writing papers on him, or reports and they write him letters and he replies to their questions.
⠀ ⠀"We need to call him" - "We are NOT calling Magneto"
Some geophysicists unknowingly reference his work, citing unexplained phenomena in magnetic field fluctuations that were actually on him.
⠀ ⠀Sometimes you have to part the person (a mutant terrorist and villain) from its work -- or something.

@anonymocha tumblr will screw the layout(?) look if I directly answer through the askbox so I'm doing it like this
anyways

guess who locked theirself in just for this

soooo- yah. hi.
lil fun fact, I wanted to gijinka this one very cool thing I have on my car (it's solar-system display alike) BUT I LOST THE THING BECAUSE MY PARENTS TEAR IT APART INTO PARTS AND SOME THE PARTS ARE LOST💔💔 so I took this bouquet cat doll thing I gave for my sis since it gives me an interesting idea,
and you can tell my designing skill is so ASS the woes of being a plain basic fanartist 2 years non-stop💔 all I can do is giving new concepts/ideas from an available thing (which I think everyone is able to do that)🤕 but whatever I made and there's an attempt

I did a lot of concept arts before drawing this one. the ones I showed below isn't the first but closest one with what I ended up.

in the middle of drawing this I remember I have an old gijinka that SHOULD'VE been the only thing I drew for this idea but I ended up doing both so whatever I'm stupid and love torturing myself like that /hj
behold,
araquarts pk2 gijinka
I actually want to butcher the design I did in the past and make a fresh new one but tbh this still looks alright ig

also doodles came from my goofy thought, what if they're friends heahehahehahwhhehahhehe

I supposed to titled this their "first meeting" but I deleted the canvas before doing that
that's all! you also can tell I got too silly (or serious?) over this drawing idea to the point I only draw them and these this month gagsywhehahwhhehshjahw lird
#kiswoodles#character design#character concept#oc concept#not like the cat flower gal will be my oc I just did this for fun#but dunno let's see#I did got attached to her at some point that's why I draw her a lot#my beautiful princess with disorder probably..#postknight 2#if you found this post through the tag trust me there's smth pk2 related down there#askbox#k that's all idk what more to tag this#you're ok to send more reqs but I'll most likely to do it very late since I've eureka-d art ideas rn#and I'd rather fanart of smth it's far more easier to me🙏designing is very much my weakness and it rlly explodes my head to think abt sorz

eden's tlt reread: GTN, chapter one (pgs. 15-24)
before i really get into it, there's a few things i'm going to try and track throughout this reread (with some color coding, ooh): for right now, i'd like to start with words i had to look up, references to threes or other significant numbers, physical structure of the settings, and foreshadowing. i'll probably add some more things to track as i go.
interlude: on the Ninth House's layout
briefly, i want to talk about the description and structure of the Ninth house. we get some descriptions on pgs 15- 17, and 23 in the first chapter, with more peppered throughout the book. Gideon says that "this late in the equinox no light would make it [to the Ninth] for months", which puts the Ninth on the far reaches of the solar system (pg. 15). based on the rest of the description: no atmosphere of its own, rocky, freezing cold, it's easy to say this is Pluto. there's a quote later in the book when they are on the First and Gideon is confused by the nighttime that confirms this: “Griddle,” she said, “this planet spins much faster than ours.” At Gideon’s continued blank expression: “It’s night, you tool” (pg 86). one day on Pluto is equal to a week on Earth, so it makes sense for her to be confused about this new circadian rhythm.
now, for the structure of the ninth: it's pretty straightforwardly a tunnel down the center of the planet, with offshoots and balconies facing inward of the tunnel: "the Ninth was an enormous hole cracked vertically into the planet's core, and the prison a bubble installation set halfway up into the atmosphere where the living conditions were probably a hell of a lot more clement" (p. 23). clement = mild, merciful. there seems to be a first floor/ main bottom layer, where the "cold white doors of Castle Drearburh" are set (p. 16). we can assume as well that the tomb is also in the Castle Drearburh, along with the church. there seems to be different tiers cut into the tunnel that are living quarters and other rooms, and a splitoff point that leads out towards the landing pad: "Leaving her cell and swinging her pack over one shoulder, she took the time to walk down five flights to her mother's nameless catacomb niche [...] then came the long hike up twenty-two flights the back way [...] heading to the splitoff shaft and the pit where her ride would arrive" (p. 15). they must be pretty significant structures built into the surrounding walls of the drillshaft. this is emphasized by a later quote that says "They hadn't managed to cozen [Giden] inside Drearburh for a good two years", meaning Gideon must have had no reason to go into Drearburh for all that time- her living quarters and spaces are all separate of the castle (p.36). the landing field for the shuttle seems to be up the splitoff shaft really high up, on a terrace above all the living quarters (but not above the snow leek fields, which must be on the highest terrace?)
back to regularly scheduled c1 thoughts
~ chapter one ~
a wee bit of foreshadowing here: "Gideon never ran unless she had to", first appearing on the very first page of GTN, only to reappear later when Dulcinea/Cytherea faints at Canaan House!
the use of would instead of could in this quote: "her mother hadn't been in there since Gideon was little and would never go back in it now" (p.15): idk if this is anything, but to me it emphasizes Wake's willfull spirit.
first mention of frontline titties of the fifth on pg. 18 in talking with Crux!
the interaction with Crux is so sick and twisted and gross but also some of the first we get to see of Gideon's banter and personality. i also personally love the descriptors tamsyn uses for Crux's speech: bubbles, croaks, gurgles. it's gross and perfect
Crux says, "one day we will use your parts for paper" (p.19). this brings up one of my biggest and most longstanding questions: what is flimsy, and what is the deal with organic material in the Dominicus system? tamsyn muir has confirmed that flimsy itself is an oil-based paper akin to a plastic film, but this topic is deserving of its own post later on because i have a lot of thoughts. however, harrow later has a journal that has a cover of "tanned human leather" (pg. 146). yuck. maybe both are used? maybe the oil that flimsy is made of is derivative of humans fat? ew.
"You talk so loudly for chattel, Nav" (p. 18). chattel= n enslaved person held as the legal property of another, a bondsman
"Gideon was home free. Gideon was gone" (p. 20). this made me laugh because of a joke from HTN: when Augustine tells Harrow that if he wants Ortus the First to go, “he’ll be giddy-gone", which i unfortunately don't have the page number for but is funny to me here when reflecting. gideon, giddy-gone!
"[Aiglamene] simply backhanded Gideon the way you might hit a barking animal" (p. 21). this line breaks my heart every single time. gideon is striving so desperately for agency in this moment, and is so discounted even by the one person who she feels might be slightly looking out for her. aiglamene asking "will you disgrace me?" right after this also stings Gideon and stings me- it's an ask for obedience that i just despise on contact.
"sin of perfidy": perfidy = disloyalty, deceitfulness, a deliberate betrayal of trust. the highest sin in Aiglamene's eyes.
another quote that rips my heart out: : "Nobody had ever loved [Gideon] in the house of the Ninth" (p. 22). brb, crying my eyes out.
FIRST COMMANDER WAKE MENTION! pg. 23 tells the story of Wake tumbling down the drillshaft and landing brain dead in a hazmat suit, with one-day old Gideon in a bio-container plugged into the suit. there's a fabulous quote here that says "she was too far gone by the time the exhausted nuns had tethered her by force, as though death had been the catalyst for the woman to hit the ground running, and they only got one word out of her: she had screamed Gideon! Gideon! Gideon! three times, and fled" (p. 23). not only do we see the foreshadowed antics of Commander Wake's spirit here, but we also see one of our first references to the number 3. threes become pretty important and reoccuring in this book, for reasons that i think require their own post.
one other number thing: this is gideon's 87th attempt at escape. 87 could also be a significant number, which may requires its own post on my part. harrow is the 87th reverend mother, there's gideon's 87 attempts. maybe this is a thin thread, but someone posted in this reddit thread that it could be a reference to Judges 8:7:
Then Gideon replied, “Just for that, when the Lord has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will tear your flesh with desert thorns and briers.
it makes sense with Gideon's name referencing the demise of someone else, as Tamsyn helpfully addended, but it might be too thin of a theory.
this concludes my thoughts on chapter one! super excited to keep rolling on this deep dive.

Mike Duncan, of the Revolutions podcast (which covered the English Revolution, American Revolution, French Revolution, Haitian Revolution, Latin American Wars of Independence, French Revolution of July 1830, Revolutions of 1848, Paris Commune, Mexican Revolution, and Russian Revolution), has started a new season covering, in the same documentary style, a fictional Martian Revolution in the 2200s.
It’s very interesting, because you can see the elements that are inspired by or parallel to some of the common patterns and major characters in the previously-covered historical revolutions. I’m going to jot down some thoughts so I can keep them on hand as the season continues.
Patterns
In his conclusion to the Revolutions series, Duncan concludes that the build up to a potential (but still far from inevitable) revolution begins when a system that had previously been stable – note, not necessarily good, just stable – becomes unstable, either because it fails to adapt to changes, or because it introduces new changes that alienate an important part of its power base.
The Martian Revolution begins with both. The setting is a corporate-ruled solar system in which Omnicorp is by far the dominant corporation out of five major ones, due to its control of an extensive but exhaustible resource that enables the generation of emissions-free energy. Mars is home to a lot of this resource, leading to the establishment of resource-extraction colonies by Omnicorp. The first stage producing instability is a long period of “extremely gerontocracy”, where CEO Vernon Byrd manages to get him and the company directors who are his cronies appointed to their positions “for life” when he is 100 years old. They then use secret life-extendeing drugs to just…keep living, but become more and more out of it, and their aides/exec assistants end up running the company.
(The importance of access to the person in power reminded me a bit of the sections in the Russian Revolution podcast on the months leading up to Lenin’s death, but there are plenty of other historical examples. In terms of the gerontocracy specifically and the way it prevents chamge and adaptation, the parallel that comes to mind is the very-long reign of Franz-Josef of Austria-Hubgary from 1849 to WWI.)
This led to a lot of things in the daily running of the company being neglected, and a black market of workarounds cropping up to keep things functioning, with Mars operating mostly on its own. This is a clear analogy to the period of “benign neglect” in the American colonies leading up to the American Revolution, and in this period a more distinct Martian identity develops.
Then things get further destabilized when the gerontocracy is finally forced out, and the new CEO – a rich kid who thinks he’s a genius, and has the asset of being one of the few with the social position and assertiveness to have challenged the gerontocracy – brings in a bunch of new, modernized rules that he thinks will getthings running smoothly again, but in fact only break them further.
This is, again, pretty clearly analogous to the kind of events producing both the American Revolution and the later Latin American Revolutions: a colonial power rapudly making changes (to increase the colonies’ profitability) that are highly unpopular with the people living in those colonies – even (or especially) with the higher echelons of the colonial population.
The other place where we have clear parallels with the historical revolutions Duncan has covered is in the layout of the class system. The Martian class system is made up of Class S personnel (top executives, mostly from Earth but a few born on Mars), Class A (other high- and mid-level managers, a mix of Earther and Martian), Class B (the intelligentsia and cultural professionals – doctors, lawyers, writers, artists, etc.), Class C (immediate supervisors, often from Earth on contracts of a few years, intending to earn some money and return home), and Class D (the majority, the regular workers who make the colony run, most of whom are Mars-born but some Earth-born). For extra vibes, the top three classes are referred to as the “SABs” (amazing how similar that sounds to SOBs) and the lower two are referred to by some SABs as the CDs (“seedies”).
Based on the previous seasons of Revolutions, this all gives a pretty clear sense of how things will play out. The Class B intelligentsia (especially the younger ones) are the core of upper-class revolutionary movements, joined by some of the Class S and A who are just too fed up with how badly Omnicorp is bungling things. Class D are the popular masses whom they have to ally with in order to win. Class C are roughly our stand-in for the lower-middle classes or petit bougeoisie (or, in Haiti, the lower-class white population): they despise the Class D personnel and resent the scornful or patronizing attitudes of the SABs, and tend to be the most counterrevolutionary; them being mainly on short-term assignment from Earth rather than identifying with Mars adds to this.
Oh, and there’s one major city (Olympus) and two lesser ones that resent Olympus’ primacy, which is going to give us some similar between-colony dynamics from the American and/or Latin American revolutions (the two went rather differently in how they played out and where they ended up).
Characters
There’s a few main figures who have been introduced so far.
1) José de Petrov, a young B-class radical who tries to launch a revolution with some of his peers, grounded in the belief that colonies having revolutions through which they gain independence is a historical inevitability. They try to gain control of key strategic sites in the main city of the Mars colony, their attempt is brutally crushed and all are killed, and it is mostly hushed up, but some people do find out about it, and it’s foreshadowed that information about it will come out later and serve as an impetus to the successful Martian Revolution. (Let others rise to take our place until the earth Mars is free.)
This is a callback to several things historically – the ‘historical inevitability’ bit is definitely one to Marxism – but the one that comes to my mind is the Decembrist revolt in early-1800s Russia: it’s led by idealistic young people with strong convictions, and it ends quickly and violently. You could also see him as a less successful and less skilled Lenin. Another parallel is the unsuccessful attempt at Colombian independence by Francisco de Miranda.
2) Mabel Dore. She’s the daughter of two S-class personnel, one of the richest people on Mars and probably the richest Martian-born person. She’s radicalized by learning about Petrov’s rebellion and the way it was crushed, and also influenced in her Martian patriotism by going to university of Earth and being treated disdainfully – or at best, as a curiosity – while there. I’m embarassed at how long it took me to figure out who she was paralelling, because she is, of course, Mars’s Simón Bólivar.
She is lookimg potentially very successful thus far in the series, because thanks to widespread philanthropy she is already extremely well-regarded by the Class D personnel, which is exactly the kind of cross-class alliance you tend to need for a successful revolution.
(To be clear: none of this is ‘laws of history’. The idea of ‘laws of history’ is bunk. There’s no particular circumstance that guantees a successful revolution – everything is affected by chance and contingency. But there are patterns, and one of them is that a successful revolution against an existing order generally requires both people who are embedded i. existing power structures – upper classes – and people with numbers – lower classes. And that one, the other, or both frequently go for each others’ throats as soon as the initial revolution is achieved. So pre-existing good feeling is a very good sign for Mabel Dore.)
3) Timothy Werner. This is, to use Mike Duncan’s term, our “great idiot of history”. (Basic thesis: you don’t get a successful revolution without the main person in power muffing up very, very badly.) Due to being a person with energy and some intelligence in an old, malfunctioning, and moribund company, and due to being near the top of the upper class, he developed the firm opinion that he was a genius who could fix everything, and that anyone who opposed his ideas or raised problems with them was simply obstructionist. As the new CEO of Omnicorp, he’s going to set off the Martian Revolution.

Heya Blasho! Question, Do humans or any of the sophonts in Wreck Hounds have well-developed methods of transport? Terrestrial? Aerial? Aquatic?
Tldr: yeah but the quality of the vehicle depends on where you are!
Vehicles are more or less the same for humans looks-wise, except due to the absence of fossil fuels on the planet everything is either electric (from solar or battery), magnilev, or RUU (<-though RUU-powered stuff is only really the norm in the SEZ everyone else is kinda scared of it now). Magnilev is the stuff that floats (a Rossetian-perfected technology, uses magnets or something), its mostly used for commercial industries and by the super rich for their fancy cars. Another main difference is that vehicles like cars aren't really a thing that most people own, everyone either uses public transit, has a bike (motorized or otherwise) or some kind of scooter (or perhaps even an animal to ride). The only exceptions are for particular jobs where you'd get to be a driver of something bigger (like on a ship, delivery driver, or dredger) or if you're crazy rich/in politics and want your own private vehicle. Transportation in core regions is on par or better than our modern technology (including some forms of self driving) but the availability of modern transport gets shaky the further out you go. In the most rural areas, there may be one tractor per county and everyone else is just using animals/manual stuff. Air travel is only for industry/delivery, the military, or for political/important people (normal people will Never get on a plane, but through some jobs or some unique forms of public transport, you could still manage to get on something that flies/floats) Seeing a helicopter is a really scary bad sign because that thing is 100% from the military. There are no airports, just some landing stripes etc. Space travel is nonexistent and they've barely managed to keep any satellites up there. Boats are literally the exact same, except for the fact that the word 'boat' or 'ship' now includes the low-altitude hovercraft that goes over air rather than water.
In terms of how the other species use vehicles, it's about the same. No one really has their own large individual property vehicles, and instead they use publicly available or smaller stuff. Their public vehicles need special accommodations, though, due to their size and shape differences. A human, kixeli, or human-congruent muttreazik could ride the same bus pretty easily, but a rossetian or drecu wouldn't really be able to sit down (tail+body shape) and a kar wouldn't even be able to fit (plus adding like 800lbs on a vehicle is not ideal). Typical vehicles can also be pretty exclusionary to any muttreazik that dont fit their host's average body layout (being too big or just not being able to use things the same way).
In terms of flight, things get a bit weird because there are Arasit and muttreazik who are sharing airspace with delivery drones, corporate ships, and sometimes even other sophonts using flight tech. There are specifically marked zones and lanes in any city with enough of a flying population that tell them where they have permission to fly/glide in to avoid crashes. This zoning also helps make sure that buildings/distinct structures with landing and takeoff points exist for flyers to use.
Species-separate public transit systems in the DRSS and in the Seru Empire. In the Empire, the different transportation methods help reinforce the separation of species and emphasize the military's strength (civilians walk or use scooters, join the army and you'll be driving a Real Car!!!!) The effect isn't intentional in the DRSS but since Enclaves in big cities are usually the only place with species-specific transportation infrastructure, there is a similar separation/exlusionary effect.
There's more to say but I'll have to put it in a post where I actually draw some of this stuff XD
#their cities look a lot different than most of ours because cars arent as common but there are still plenty of big roads for material/people#the disparity between a core city and a rural settlment is like time-traveling; in the core you could see a literal flying car and then#traveling a few hours out you could see a guy riding a horse 🐎#ask#I'll have to draw some vehicles eventually...
