Psychic Abilities and Science: A Surprising Compatibility
Psychic abilities might seem woo-woo at first glance, but they’re actually more compatible with science than you might think.
If you’ve ever trained artificial neural networks, which is the foundation of much of modern A.I., you’ll know that these systems can only perceive and perform tasks they’ve been specifically trained on.
The human brain, which inspired the development of artificial neural networks, works in a similar way. It can only perceive what it has been trained to perceive, and trims away the neuronal connections of functions that we don't use. For example, during brain development, the brain follows a strategy called "perceptual narrowing", changing neural connections to enhance performance on perceptual tasks important for daily experience, with the sacrifice of others.
A compelling research study by Pascalis, de Haan, and Nelson (2002) demonstrates this. They found that 6-month-old babies could distinguish between individual monkey faces—a skill older babies and adults no longer possess. As we grow, our brains prioritize what’s useful for our environment, and let go of what’s not. In other words, our perception of reality is shaped and limited by what our brains have learned to focus on.
So, what does this have to do with psychic abilities?
It’s possible that individuals with psychic abilities simply have brains wired differently: neural networks that haven’t been pruned in the usual way, or that have developed in unique directions. This might allow them to perceive aspects of reality that most of us have lost access to or never developed in the first place.

The Illusion of Objectivity: Challenging Traditional Views of Reality
Donald Hoffman's groundbreaking research and theories fundamentally challenge our understanding of reality, consciousness, and perception. By positing that consciousness is the foundational aspect of the universe, rather than a byproduct of physical processes, Hoffman's work has far-reaching implications that transcend disciplinary boundaries. This paradigm shift undermines the long-held assumption that our senses, albeit imperfectly, reflect an objective world, instead suggesting that our experience of reality is akin to a sophisticated virtual reality headset, constructed by evolution to enhance survival, not to reveal truth.
The application of evolutionary game theory to the study of perception yields a startling conclusion: the probability of sensory systems evolving to perceive objective reality is zero. This assertion necessitates a reevaluation of the relationship between perception, consciousness, and the physical world, prompting a deeper exploration of the constructed nature of reality. Hoffman's theory aligns with certain interpretations of quantum mechanics and philosophical idealism, proposing that space, time, and physical objects are not fundamental but rather "icons" or "data structures" within consciousness.
The ramifications of this theory are profound, with significant implications for neuroscience, cognitive science, physics, cosmology, and philosophy. A deeper understanding of the brain as part of a constructed reality could lead to innovative approaches in treating neurological disorders and enhancing cognitive functions. Similarly, questioning the fundamental nature of space-time could influence theories on the origins and structure of the universe, potentially leading to new insights into the cosmos. Philosophical debates around realism vs. anti-realism, the mind-body problem, and the hard problem of consciousness may also find new frameworks for resolution within Hoffman's ideas.
Moreover, acknowledging the constructed nature of reality may lead to profound existential reflections on the nature of truth, purpose, and the human condition. Societal implications are also far-reaching, with potential influences on education, emphasizing critical thinking and the understanding of constructed realities in various contexts. However, these implications also raise complex questions about free will, agency, and the role of emotions and subjective experience, highlighting the need for nuanced consideration and further exploration.
Delving into Hoffman’s theories sparks a fascinating convergence of science and spirituality, leading to a richer understanding of consciousness and reality’s intricate, enigmatic landscape. As we venture into this complex, uncertain terrain, we open ourselves up to discovering fresh insights into the very essence of our existence. By exploring the uncharted aspects of his research, we may stumble upon innovative pathways for personal growth, deeper self-awareness, and a more nuanced grasp of what it means to be human.

The Pain Matrix: Weaving the Tapestry of Human Suffering
Pain and Meaning Pain—an ancient traveler, threading its way through the corridors of human existence. It whispers in the silence of our solitude, howls in the chaos of loss, and lingers in the quiet, aching corners of our hearts. Yet, for all its inevitability, pain is a mystery we rarely dare to unravel. What if it is more than a fleeting sensation or a shadow we’re doomed to chase? What if…

Moondance 40 x 40 inches, Oil, 2023 “In a way, it’s really science that’s been inspiring rituals all along. Beneath the specifics of all our beliefs, sacred texts, origin stories, and dogmas, we humans have been celebrating the same two things since the dawn of time: astronomy and biology. The changing of the seasons, the long summer days, the harvest, the endless winter nights, and the blossoming spring are all by-products of how the Earth orbits the sun. The phases of the moon, which have dictated the timing of rituals since the dawn of civilization, are the result of how the moon orbits us. Birth, puberty, reproduction, and death are the biological processes of being human. Throughout the history of our species, these have been the miracles, for lack of a better word, that have given us meaning. They are the real, tangible events upon which countless celebrations have been built, mirroring one another even among societies who had no contact.” - Sasha Sagan, For Small Creature Such as We

In May 1921, American polymath Walter Russell entered a 39-day coma-like state, during which he claimed to have accessed “the source of all knowledge.” Upon awakening, he frantically wrote down what he had seen — pages filled with philosophical, scientific, and spiritual revelations that would later form the foundation of his manuscript *The Universal One*. Though he sent his findings to 500 leading minds of the time, nearly all dismissed him as mad — except one. Nikola Tesla, the visionary inventor, was so struck by Russell’s insights that he urged him to seal the work away for a thousand years, insisting that humanity was not yet ready for its truths.
Walter Russell’s revelations reimagined the very structure of reality. He argued that matter was not solid but crystallized light slowed by thought — that everything around us, from rocks to human bodies, was composed of light patterns, shaped by consciousness. He believed the universe was fundamentally mental, not material, and that all things moved in rhythmic cycles — expansion and contraction, like breath. He dismissed opposites like good and evil as illusions, asserting instead that everything sought harmony and balance. To Russell, death wasn’t an end but the release of compressed light returning to its source. Even time, he claimed, wasn’t linear, but a spiral where past, present, and future coexisted.
These ideas were radically ahead of their time, blending metaphysics, wave dynamics, and a deep sense of universal unity. He believed electricity was a living spiral of energy, not merely electrons in motion, and that the vacuum of space was in fact a vibrant sea of untapped potential. Health, in his view, was the natural rhythm of the body, and disease was simply a disruption of that flow. Though ignored or ridiculed during his lifetime, Russell’s work now draws new attention in an era where quantum physics and consciousness studies begin to echo the same questions. To many, he is no longer a forgotten eccentric, but a prophet of a paradigm yet to come.

Extra dimensions in physics models and spiritual experiences
Some physicists have proposed models with extra dimensions. Interestingly, some spiritual experiences seem to hint at something similar.
Our world has 3D space (left-right, up-down, forward-backward) and 1D time, totaling 4 dimensions. In physics, like in string theory, extra dimensions are usually thought to exist in space. But when people describe spiritual or supernatural experiences, they often say time doesn’t feel linear: extra dimensions of time.
It's interesting that extra dimensions play a role in both physics and spiritual experiences, with the former involving extra spatial dimensions, and the latter hinting at extra temporal dimensions.

I find something that annoys me is how people misunderstand why Persephone is considered the goddess of spring.
It’s because Demeter makes it spring when she returns. Not because Persephone has some awesome sick flower powers and she makes it all pretty before returning to her 10000/10 husband.
Agreed! But also, if I can offer up my own food for thought / interpretation: Demeter didn't necessarily create 'winter' as we traditionally perceive it, rather she created famine.
In that same sense, Demeter isn't even necessarily "making it Spring" when Persephone returns - she makes the land fertile again, allowing mortals to harvest their crops and thrive. Thus creating the "seasons" of harvest and drought.
Like many of the myths we've preserved and still read today, The Hymn to Demeter was a story created to explain natural phenomena that we didn't yet know how to explain. In Demeter's case, the story of her separation from her daughter explained the cycle of nature - why the clouds would no longer rain, why the ground would dry and crack, why the soil would become brittle, and why the crops would lose their will to live. It wasn't necessarily because she brought about 'winter', it was simply that she stopped performing her own duties, which were specifically dedicated to the harvest, especially that of wheat and grains (both of which are INCREDIBLY important foods that played their own massive role in the evolution of the human race - they weren't only essential to keeping both humans and livestock fed with their carb-heavy components, but could also be used to make fabrics and tools.)
Just as people prayed to Poseidon for safe travels across still waters, so too would people pray to Demeter for a bountiful harvest. Whenever there were droughts, you could understand it as the period when Persephone would return to the Underworld; or you could even blame it on yourself, or even your own fellow mortals, if you felt that perhaps Demeter had been disrespected in some way so as to bring about a drought as punishment.
This is why The Hymn to Demeter also functions as a foundational story for the founding of The Eleusinian Mysteries - a cult that worshipped Demeter, and other deities attributed to the harvest (ex. Dionysus) whose initiates were sworn to secrecy, never to speak aloud what practices were happening within the cult. And they did a damn good job of it too, because to this day we still don't fully know what went down in those cults. They're mysteries, after all :')
Demeter wasn't the only god who was attributed to the harvest and the weather patterns that would cause drought, but she's certainly one of the most popularly discussed, undoubtedly due to the fact that her story is one of the oldest and most well-preserved, and she was attributed to some of the most essential crops of that era.
But as it would happen to many myths over the centuries, the exact cultural contexts and intentions behind her original story have become either lost, or re-interpreted so many times that we can't even fully trust that Homer's version is "accurate", at least not without any way to retrieve those original oral stories that predated both him and other famous poets whose work we still study and analyze today.
But hey, that's just my own interpretation! One out of the thousands that have existed and the thousands that will undoubtedly go on to exist. I'm sure my own interpretation of it isn't perfect or foolproof, but I hope it offers up some fun food for thought!
