Yang & Ruby's Childhood
Oh how I wish, I wish that people would stop ignoring canon and pretending Yang & Ruby had functional adults who were good parents in their lives after Summer died.
Because the fact of the matter is that they did not and canon has spelled this out again and again for the audience with increasing clarity every single time.
Tumblr media
In Volume 2, Yang overtly states that Tai shut down following Summer’s to the point where his neglect became so pronounced a 5 and 3 year old who were grieving were left alone for hours and could disappear into a Grimm inhabited island looking for a different parental figure.
Tumblr media
Its re-established again in volume Five when Yang spells out to Weiss in no uncertain terms that after Summer disappeared, Yang, a five year old, was the one who needed to keep the family together and the trauma this inflicted on her alone is obvious. Let alone Ruby, because she was both being neglected and being raised by someone only two years her senior. Something Ruby fully acknowledges was the cast.
Tumblr media
There’s a multitude of other things I feel Tai has done wrong as both a teacher and a parent, but these one’s are undeniable, openly stated facets of the household.
And Qrow doesn’t get an out by being the uncle either, oh no.
Tumblr media
Ruby makes it expressly clearly despite how much she loves and admires her Uncle she is very much used to him dropping back into her life shit faced drunk and being carted home by a stranger and needing to be taken care of.
Again, by children!
Tumblr media
He has his reasons and his problems, but amazingly that doesn’t stop this from being a shitty way to grow up. No matter how much Tai & Qrow might love these two, they were not ‘great parents’, I wouldn’t even call them good.
Tumblr media
These two adults were negligent and damaging to the children under their care despite how much they may have loved them, and the fact that is ignored really burns me up inside.

I think it’s time I address what is by far the BIGGEST assumption much of the fandom has made about Ruby’s and Yang’s parents:
That Raven was just the shitty parent who abandoned her daughters, and that Summer and Tai were the uncomplicated GOOD parents who made the good choices. And Qrow was the well-meaning fuckup who’s been able to improve.
When the reality is that ALL of Team STRQ were in fact well-meaning but  MASSIVE fuckups in each their own way.
Like if nothing else, they all bailed on Ruby and Yang in one way or another (Raven and Summer physically, Tai emotionally/psychologically for several years, Qrow a bit of both)
And I have a good feeling that the Vacuo arc will be when Ruby and Yang will finally have to address that shit.

Tai beating raven in a fistfight.
Raven sitting there with a broken nose and a black eye, turning to her brother: That one, I want that fucking one.
Qrow incredibly confused: Are you sure?

Your STRQ-Y fanart hurts me so bad , reminds me of a headcanon of mine that probably isn't true that Raven left because she saw how much better for Yang Summer was than she was
Glad you liked(hated) my art
I TOTALLY believe that’s at LEAST part of it 100% it fits in with the narrative pattern of Yang personally suffering because others are self destructive
Like say what you want about rwbys writing but thats always consistent
There’s a whole episode where she goes “hey don’t destroy yourself on purpose it actually fucks up everyone you care about more then it does anything else” and then tells a story that references At LEAST four people who did that and fucked up her life because of it (+Bby Ruby sleeping shes the mvp)
Also it fits with Raven characterization wise and all that and her CLEARLY loving people but just being really really bad at it
So it makes sense as a narrative pattern and also in character
I personally don’t think it was the only reason she probably had lore driven reasons
But yeah ravens definitely very never love an anchor by the crane wives
I think she loves and loved Yang a lot she’s shown checking up on her a lot as a child(not that she followed through with helping her but still it shows love)
Maybe she didn’t help her when everything fell apart because of how she herself was dealing with summers death, maybe she felt responsible and she didn’t want that to touch her family, maybe she saw Yang dealing with every other failure of a caretaker and didn’t want to add another disappointment, maybe she never even popped in because she didn’t want to pop in and out whenever it was convenient and destabilize yangs life even further, maybe she thought Yang was doing perfect as she was, maybe she thinks the suffering she was going through was good and made her stronger that children should go through that and that she was doing great
Who knows
Love to hear everyone’s thoughts on raven

Thinking about RWBY as my hyperfixation wears off and I think, as with all fairy tales, there’s a moral, of course. And I think RWBY’s is this:
“You are who you choose to be.”
Blake chose not to be the monster.
Adam chose to be the monster.
Weiss chose not to be like her father.
Jacques chose to be a miserly weasel to the end.
Raven chose not to be a mother. Summer chose to be Yang’s mother. And Yang chose to be the mom Ruby couldn’t have.
Qrow chose to be a drunk and bitter.
Emerald chose to be a bad guy, but she also chose to leave that behind when confronted about it.
Ironwood chose to be a bad guy and doubled-down when confronted about it.
Penny chose to be more human than most and chose to die a hero.
Cinder chose to let her past define her and to lash out against the world.
Trivia chose to become Neopolitan and again chose to become someone else when she realized that wasn’t who she needed to be.
Ruby was forced to be the hero before she was ready but chose to be that hero even when given an out.
Ozma chose to be the white knight, believing himself to be the only one able to save the world.
Salem chose to be the witch, looking to destroy the world.
I think, truly, no one is beyond redemption if they truly want it and are willing to work for it. We’re all victims of circumstance, but we choose our paths and who we are. We can blame the world for our problems, but we should never let our problems define us. You choose who you want to be.

RWBY x JSR: Raven Branwen
Sister of Qrow Branwen and mother of Yang Xiao Long, Raven is a very intimidating mother but with a secret soft and caring side. She values family and it's her top#1 priority.
She had dissagreements with Qrow in the past and she kinda dissapeared for a short time when Summer went missing. She then came back, offering her help to find her.
She left tai after Yang's birth. She never neglected her tho, she just didn't wanna stay with him as a couple. Tai and Raven never got married btw, that's why she just... left him, there was no divorce

To the RWBY Fandom
Hi! I'm relatively new to the fandom and I'm looking for RWBY fan artists to follow, so if you are one let me know! I'd like to see all the amazing stuff y'all have created, especially positive/happy stuff since for me I get enough angst from the show itself. 😅

Steadfast, Immovable
For ages the southern reaches of Vale was under the protection of a single family. A family that could trace their battle-worn heroic linage to the very mists that surround the most ancient of ages.
Tumblr media
For reasons unknown... that bastion of safety was wiped from the face of Remnant by a horde of grimm, one in size that has never before be seen. The Arcs held the line, protecting those under their care. Providing them safety and sanctuary at the cost of their very lives.
Yet in the midst of all that carnage and death... there were survivors. The two youngest of the Arc line, Saphron (Age 5) and Juniper (Age 2) plus one other...

A/N I will say this now. All I know about Warhammer 40k is from youtube, so if I screw anything up... please be gentle or point me in the right direction. I have no clue if I'll do more than what I have posted now... I'm mentally drained and sort of sifting through old content to post things to show I'm not totally MIA.

I wonder how much of v10’s focus will be on family thematically. They’ve certainly laid the groundwork for it in v9
A Rose-Xiao Long-Branwen family reunion feels imminent, I’m not even going to go into how much there is to unpack there, that’s a separate post in itself
Ghira and Kali reuniting with Blake (again) getting to see how much she’s flourished since the last time they saw her. Getting to meet Yang in particular but also the rest of her team
Willow, Winter, and Whitley finding out Weiss is alive! Rebuilding their relationships with each other like they had started to in v7/8 now that Jacques is no longer in the picture (also another topic that could be its own post)
The Brothers themselves now that their true origin has been revealed. Their (the god of light’s really) hypocritical demand to unite Remnant or else we’ll nuke your planet again. They haven’t actually been united themselves this whole time though
Team rwby - not friends. Family - being implied by the Blacksmith to be a representation of true balance through their love for each other

Sometimes i like to rewatch RWBY and especially love the scene where Yang tells Blake the story of their family for a number of reasons
1. Ive always found this show weird because Yang and Ruby were both Summer Roses children maybe not genetically but Summer Rose raised Yang and its always been so interesting how Ruby is always the one struggling with the idea of their mother when as Yang said she was just a toddler and didnt really know what was going. I would've expected Yang to have expressed more feelings throughout the show in response to losing such an important mother figure. And the way she reacts to it now just shows how much she had to mature and grow up at a young age when it came to that topic (also why the scene where they hug and cry over Salem killing their mother is so good)
2. I love the idea that when Tai is busy he calls Qrow to watch over Yang and Ruby like thats adorable. And its what I think about when Yang says he showed up and stopped the Grimm from attacking them.
3. Tai being the struggling father hurts so much because hes such a kind soul and did everything he could to raise them with the help of Qrow they give me Danny Tanner and Unlce Jesse vibes
4. The way Yang probably had to raise Ruby for a bit while Tai shut down also hurts because Ruby remembers her reading to her every night before bed. I would've wanted to know more about Yangs struggle growing up. Because these are such happy memories for Ruby
5. The inspiration that was Summer Rose to Yang and in turn Yang to Ruby. Its always said Ruby was inspired by her mother (which is also true) but when thinking about it the first thing Yang says about Summer is that she was a baker of cookies and a slayer of monsters on the side. It just never gets acknowledged again?? Like Summer Rose being such a butt kicker meant the world to Yang. And then When Ozpin asks Ruby why she wants to be a huntress not only does she say she wants to help people but she also says that her sister is going to be one and is already attending the school. Hints at the influence Yang has had on her. And its so cute because their first day Yang watches Ruby step into that leader mantle after collecting their chess pieces and its slightly full circle for them
6. Sometimes i like to think about how Ruby isnt good at hand to hand combat and if she hadnt been moved up 2 years I feel like Tai would've finally taught her considering he is also a teacher at Signal and did so with Yang.
I need more emphasis on all these relationships because the way this family works is so beautiful.
