Rosa Parks - an activist of the civil rights movement, even called "the mother of the civil rights movement"
Martin Luther King Jr - led a nonviolent campaign for racial justice during the civil rights movement, also famous for his speech "I Have a Dream"
Malcom X - a minister, a leader in the civil rights movement and a supporter of Black nationalism
Muhammad Ali - received the Liberty Medal for his long-time role as an advocate for humanitarian causes, civil rights and religious freedom

Lecture 11: Sam Cooke’s deeply moving 1964 Civil Rights ballad “A Change is Gonna Come” was originally recorded in 1963, but became popular only after his tragic death on December 11, 1964. The song assumed a central place in the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, which reached its peak around the time Cooke was killed. The song, now considered a masterpiece, is seen as Cooke’s gift to the struggle for racial equality. Not surprisingly, in 2007, the National Recording Registry and Library of Congress selected it as a song that is “culturally, historically, or aesthetically important.”
