So the Lover’s Curse Mask

Someone talked about some fun lover’s curse analogies, which reminds me of the way the mask is portrayed in the show. Jokes aside, the mask was mentioned to be both on Sifeng and once on Sifeng’s dad. Both times the mask got lifted without the lover’s curse being lifted.

According to brother Liu, Xuanji was able to lift the mask prematurely because of her power. It is definitely possible since she basically destroyed the mask with her sword in one strike. The lover’s mask could be simply unable to withstand her will.

But what about Sifeng’s parents? His mother was forced to lift the mask for his father, and did it successfully. What we knew is she did love Sifeng’s dad before she turned to hate him. But did the love she had for him completely vanish? I doubt it. So it’s most likely that the lover’s mask can be lifted if love exists, but not to the level required to solve the lover’s curse.

Considering Xuanji only just got half of her sensory inputs back at the time, which do not include the sensor to her own mind-state, and that she had no conscious understanding of romantic love at that time, it could be that the instinctual love she had for Sifeng, no matter how pure and intense, was not on the level to satisfy the lover’s curse. And judging by what happened later, it was definitely a mature kind of love that the lover’s curse requires.

So what is the truth? I think it might be both. Xuanji was definitely not romance-aware enough to satisfy the lover’s curse, and the mask was also not able to withstand her hidden power. So it has no chance of sticking on Sifeng’s face lol. This is a major reason why I love this show so much. It truly has one of the most iron-willed female protagonist, unable to be deterred in what she truly wants to do. Well, if not counting how naive and stunned into inaction she was in the middle part due to *reasons* but that’s just normal.

Ive said this before but swear the biggest skill to learn as an adult is how to resist high-pressure sales tactics. You do NOT have to answer questions with anything other than "Sorry I'm not interested." No matter how nice they are or no matter how many follow up questions they ask or even how agitated they get when you stand your ground. Just keep saying I'm not interested.
