He sounds soft, affectionate. He sounds nothing like the Max that Charles knows. 

“I forgot about these,” Max says, brushing his thumbs gently over Charles’ sideburns. “You started shaving them, after your first year.” 

His hands continue their gentle exploration, and Charles just - lets it happen. Struck dumb, perhaps. Max strokes softly over his chin, the curve of his cupid’s bow, his bottom lip.  

“No facial hair.” Max seems to realise what he’s doing at that moment, and lets go, looking alarmed at himself. “Oh, sorry. I am - used to being able to.”  

Max grins at him, in that funny crooked way he has. It’s familiar enough that it calms Charles’ racing heart. 

“Why?” Charles croaks out. “Why are you - used to touching me. You do not even like me.”

Max looks briefly stricken, eyes flitting away from Charles. “I always liked you,” Max says softly. “You are the one who took some convincing.”
