The U.S. will use its veto power against a Palestinian bid to be recognized as a member state of the United Nations during a vote at the Security Council expected to take place Thursday evening. Vedant Patel, principal deputy spokesperson for the State Department, described as premature an effort by the Palestinian Authority (PA) to gain member status at the U.N. He said there was not unanimity among the Security Council’s 15 members that the Palestinian Authority had met the criteria for membership, with unresolved questions over the governance of the Gaza Strip, where Israel is in a war to defeat and eliminate the controlling power, Hamas. ā€œAnd for that reason, the United States is voting no on this proposed Security Council resolution,ā€ Patel said.
Earlier it was revealed that the United States was secretly pressuring other members of the Security Council to shoot down a Palestinian state membership so the US wouldn't have to use its veto as that would lead to a wave of local and international criticism for Joe Biden.

Here's a controversial opinion that really shouldn't be:
Palestinians have the right to live in their homeland (or any other land) with security and dignity.
Israelis and Diaspora Jews also have the right to live in their homeland (or any other land) with security and dignity.
These need not and should not be contradictory positions, because the entire point of human rights is that they're universal, and if they're not, then they're not rights, just privileges, and you don't really believe in human rights at all.

People stop trying to simplify the actual most complicated situation in the world challenge.
Yes, Netanyahu's government is horrible and we should oppose all of its terrible actions. Yes, Palestine deserves to be a free state with its own government.
No, this does not mean we support HAMAS, which mistreats its own citizens and puts them in the line of fire. And No, Israel itself can and should not completely stop existing, the Jewish population in Israel is too populous and too well established for them to ever be able to "go back to their old homes" which don't even exist anymore. And considering the atrocities commited by Israel against the Palestinians, I don't doubt for a second that the hurt Palestinian goverenment would lead a campaign of genocide right back against the Israelites.
You guys *need* to realize that this issue will never be as simple as "Palestine owns everything" or "Israel owns everything" because that will lead to nothing but more loss of life down the line. You *need* to realize that Israel is no longer made up of people who migrated there, and its now mostly people who have lived there their whole life. On the other side, you *definitely* need to realize that Palestinians are not horrible monsters for the sins of one extremist group in the Gaza strip, and you need to realize that the Palestinian people have just as much of a right to self-determination as any Israelite, and deserve to be able to live without fear of the IDF bombing their home.
There's nothing I myself can do personally to lead to peace, but I can at least hope for Netanyahu to be ousted one day, for the West Bank and Gaza to be free and not have to worry about their livelihoods being ruined by the IDF, for HAMAS to eventually no longer have the influence they have, and for Israel and Palestine to be able to exist with eachother without any sort of encroachment on eachother.

I never knew the Bibas family but,
When I look at the pictures of Kfir and Ariel I see my little brother when he was their ages.
I see a baby I know who’s only a little younger than Kfir.
I see the kids I teach in Ariel, he looks like he could have very well fit in that class.
I see the faces my mom and moms I know on Shiri.
The Jewish population isn’t large, but we are so connected. It’s something gentiles may not understand. I feel connected to Jews who I haven’t even met. When I look at the faces of the people taken or killed by Hamas I see my cousins in them grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, I see my brothers in them, I see my Jewish friends and I see myself in them.
I am filled with so much anger, but mostly grief and sadness.
On October 7th the Nova festival, a sight I went to, it was one of the biggest attacks that day, it was a musical festival for peace. Some people there were working to try to bring peace to Israel and Palestine, they were part of charities and groups. It was Simchat Torah a happy festival, but it ended in tragedy, with many of those advocating for peace killed or kidnapped.
I do not hate Palestinians, I do not wish death on civilians, I want peace. I want this war to end, for the people to come home, peace and safety for both Israel and Palestine. Even though this is a sad day, I have hope, I have hope for the two state solution and for peace

AHEAD OF THE United Nations Security Council action to consider the Palestinian Authority’s application to become a full member of the international body, the United States is lobbying nations to reject such membership, hoping to avoid an overt ā€œvetoā€ by Washington. The lobbying effort, revealed in copies of unclassified State Department cables obtained by The Intercept, is at odds with the Biden administration’s pledge to fully support a two-state solution.
The diplomatic cables detail pressure being applied to members of the Security Council, including Malta, the rotating president of the council this month. Ecuador in particular is being asked to lobby Malta and other nations, including France, to oppose U.N. recognition. The State Department’s justification is that normalizing relations between Israel and Arab states is the fastest and most effective way to achieve an enduring and productive statehood.
While clarifying that President Joe Biden has worked vigorously to support ā€œPalestinian aspirations for statehoodā€ within the context ā€œof a comprehensive peace that would resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,ā€ a diplomatic cable dated April 12 details U.S. talking points against a U.N. vote for Palestinian statehood. The cable says that Security Council members must be persuaded to reject any proposal for Palestinian statehood — and thereby its recognition as a sovereign nation — before the council’s open debate on the Middle East, scheduled for April 18.
ā€œIt remains the U.S. view that the most expeditious path toward a political horizon for the Palestinian people is in the context of a normalization agreement between Israel and its neighbors,ā€ the cable reads. ā€œWe believe this approach can tangibly advance Palestinian goals in a meaningful and enduring way.ā€
ā€œWe therefore urge you not to support any potential Security Council resolution recommending the admission of ā€˜Palestine’ as a U.N. member state, should such a resolution be presented to the Security Council for a decision in the coming days and weeks.ā€

The Palestinian people deserve to live, to be free, and to have a nation of their own in their homeland. And to have the resources and infrastructure necessary to maintain it. And it is the moral obligation of the world to ensure it.
The same is true of Israelis. And I am well-aware that support for one people should be able to stand on its own, to be expressed without having to pair it with an acknowledgement of the right to exist of the other. But such a statement IS necessary, because so many people have chosen to maliciously equate freedom for Palestine with the destruction of Israelis/Jews (and vice versa).

calling all those curious about and eager to discuss/debate the israeli-palestinian conflict!
if you have discord, you might be interested in In Favor of Coexistence, a server created to be a space for those who understand and want to explore what it means to coexist. in this server, we will discuss the ins and outs of the I/P conflict, its history, and its current state.
this server is strictly for those who are for a two-state solution, and who actually understand what that means. if you think one group of people should have to leave the region for there to be peace, this is not the place for you.
everyone is welcome here: jews, non-news, muslims, christians, israelis, palestinians, etc. happy pride!
(we’re also looking for mods, so if that sounds like something you’d be up for, shoot me a dm! and if you want to join, do so here.)

Joseph Gedeon at The Guardian:
Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador toĀ Israel, has said that the US is no longer pursuing the goal of an independent Palestinian state, marking what analysts describe as the most explicit abandonment yet of a cornerstone of USĀ Middle EastĀ diplomacy. AskedĀ during an interview with Bloomberg NewsĀ if a Palestinian state remains a goal of US policy, he replied: ā€œI don’t think so.ā€ The former Arkansas governor chosen byĀ Donald TrumpĀ as his envoy to Israel went further by suggesting that any future Palestinian entity could be carved out of ā€œa Muslim countryā€ rather than requiring Israel to cede territory. ā€œUnless there are some significant things that happen that change the culture, there’s no room for it,ā€ Huckabee was quoted as saying. Those probably won’t happen ā€œin our lifetimeā€, he told the news agency. When pressed on Palestinian aspirations in theĀ West Bank, where 3 million Palestinians live under Israeli occupation, Huckabee employed Israeli government terminology, asking: ā€œDoes it have to be in Judea and Samaria?ā€
Trump, in his first term, was relatively tepid in his approach to a two-state solution, a longtime pillar of US Middle East policy, and he has given little sign of where he stands on the issue in his second term. The state department did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Middle East analysts said the comments made explicit a shift that has been broadly expected. ā€œThis is not at all surprising given what we’ve seen in the last four-plus months, including the administration’sĀ open support for expelling the population of Gaza, the legitimization of Israeli settlement and annexation policies,ā€ said Khaled Elgindy, a scholar at Georgetown University’s Center for Contemporary Arab Studies and former adviser to Palestinian negotiators. ā€œThis is an administration that is committed to Palestinian erasure, both physical and political,ā€ Elgindy said. ā€œThe signs were there even in the first Trump term, which nominally supported a Palestinian ā€˜state’ that was shorn of all sovereignty and under permanent Israeli control. At least now they’ve abandoned the pretense.ā€
Any lingering hope of the two-state solution between Israel and Palestine got snuffed out, as anti-Palestinian bigot Mike Huckabee, US’s Ambassador to Israel Apartheid State, says that the US will no longer pursue the goal of a separate Palestinian state.
Huckabee stated that any future Palestinian state be carved out from an existing Muslim nation rather than from occupied West Bank and Gaza which currently compromise Palestine.

It flabbergasts me that people are trying so hard to ensure Trump's reelection while claiming it's because they care about the Palestinians.

There are over 7 million Jews in Israel.
There are over 5 million Palestinians in Palestine, and nearly 2 million in Israel.
Neither are going anywhere.
And if you want them to, you either haven't thought about what that would really mean... or you're a monster.
