WEEK08 HW #7 - Nami Matcha (Extended)
Before:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
⭐ View prototype!
Think about the homework you did last week. Either make a new version building on what you learned last time, or pick a new app/website/program. Use Figma in the same way — Give yourself a directive: I am going to make this app/site/*** funny/silly/angry/usable/terrifying/legible/incomprehensible/

.. Then, think about what qualities you can use to create a version that embodies that adjective. Your changes might be subtle or loud – try out a few things before you settle on your final direction. If you don’t know what to do, talk to me.
About Us:
Directive: I am going to make this page less empty and more personal.
My changes:
Introduced more colors to brighten up the page!
Incorporated more photos that are not already in use on the site.
Added the reoccurring arch in home and product display page for a more welcoming feel.
Product display & info (Yame):
Directive: I am going to make this page emphasize the flavor and customer experience of Nami's Yame Matcha.
My changes:
Push matcha description up, making it the first thing a user reads instead of the payment option.
Add more fun and inviting shapes from the home page to display Yame matcha images.
Slight edits to the matcha description to make the text visually less condensed (asterisk, line skip)
Rotating thank you message was too light. Changed it to Nami green and butter yellow!
Customer reviews are visually more condensed because original design require customer eyes to drag across the screen. I hate it lol

Arbitrary Notions
I just want to know who it is, in Slack's design pod, who thought that bringing the Status menu from one top-end corner of the screen to a bottom-end one makes sense. Is it based on screen areas being used, and when? Is it just some head-of-department's whim?
When Tumblr locals complain about @staff mixing stuff around for seemingly no reason, I'm reminded that this is actually a problem across several software companies and service providers. A refresh could have involved a simple cleaning-up of the UI, but things somehow always tend to veer towards complete restructurings - usually informed in order to please a younger cohort that may rather be used to some competitor's own UX.
I know it sounds old-codger-y, but when a workflow is established and changes are mostly aesthetic, couldn't the user decide on what they like? Let me know of deep-seated changes to the tools I use, sure, but don't uproot me entirely just because someone thought my icon placement and color themes weren't 'fresh' enough anymore.

One thing I hope Serif/Affinity folks are doing is using some of the usage metrics they are likely gathering to do “Desire Paths” on their UX/UI. Especially since they have lots of custom hot keys as a design element.

Why Good Design is Good Business: The ROI of Investing in Quality Digital Design
At WJM Digital Design
In today’s fast-moving digital world, design is often the first and most lasting impression your brand makes. Whether it’s a website, a social media ad, or an app interface—how your business looks and feels directly influences how customers engage with you.
But great design isn't just about making things look good. It’s a powerful business tool that can increase trust, boost conversions, and drive long-term growth. Let’s break down why good design is good business—and why investing in quality digital design is one of the smartest decisions a company can make.
1. First Impressions Are Formed in Seconds
Research shows that users form a first impression of a website within 50 milliseconds. That’s faster than the blink of an eye. In that fraction of a second, people decide whether your brand feels trustworthy, credible, and worth their time.
Tumblr media
Good design uses color, layout, imagery, and typography strategically to create a professional and inviting digital space. Bad design, on the other hand, creates friction and sends people running to competitors.
Bottom line: You never get a second chance to make a first impression—especially online.
2. Design Directly Impacts Conversion Rates
You could have the best product or service in your industry, but if your digital design doesn’t guide users clearly, you’ll lose potential customers. Quality design improves conversion by:
Making navigation intuitive
Placing call-to-action (CTA) buttons where they make the most sense
Designing for mobile responsiveness
Using visual hierarchy to guide users toward decisions
For example, a well-placed CTA button with the right color contrast can improve click-through rates by 20% or more. Similarly, optimizing page layout can reduce bounce rates and keep users engaged longer.
Design isn’t just decoration—it’s strategy.
3. Brand Consistency Builds Trust
Your brand’s visual identity needs to be consistent across all digital platforms—from your website to your social media to your email campaigns. Inconsistent colors, fonts, and styles confuse users and reduce your credibility.
Strong branding creates familiarity. Familiarity breeds trust. And trust leads to conversions.
A professional digital design agency ensures every visual element aligns with your brand’s personality and message, making your business more memorable and trustworthy.
4. Real-World Examples: The ROI of Better Design
Here are a few anonymized client examples that demonstrate the power of great design:
Client A: After a homepage redesign with better UX and CTAs, their lead conversion rate increased by 48% in just two months.
Client B: A full brand refresh and website overhaul led to a 65% increase in time on site and a 30% decrease in bounce rate.
Client C: A mobile-first redesign helped them improve mobile sales by 40%, tapping into an audience segment they were previously losing.
These numbers show that professional design pays for itself—often faster than you'd expect.
5. The Pitfalls of DIY Design
With so many drag-and-drop tools available today, it’s tempting for business owners to create their own designs. But there’s a difference between putting content on a page and crafting a strategic user experience.
Common DIY mistakes include:
Poor use of white space
Inconsistent branding
Lack of mobile optimization
Unclear navigation
CTA buttons that get ignored
A digital design agency brings experience, strategy, and polish—turning your vision into a tool that drives real results.
Tumblr media
6. How to Know It’s Time for a Redesign
Not sure if your current design is holding you back? Here’s a quick checklist:
Your site looks outdated or cluttered
Your bounce rate is high
Your branding is inconsistent
Your design isn’t mobile-friendly
You’re not getting the conversions you want
Users complain about usability or navigation
If you checked off even two of these, it’s time to consider a design upgrade.
Final Thoughts: Design That Drives Growth
In a world where digital is often the first (and sometimes only) touchpoint with your audience, design is no longer optional—it’s essential. It shapes perceptions, builds trust, and directly impacts your bottom line.
At WJM Digital Design, we don’t just create beautiful designs—we craft strategic digital experiences that turn visitors into loyal customers. Whether you’re a startup or an established brand, investing in quality design is an investment in growth.

THIS. This right here. It's like they're deliberately engaging in hostile architecture but for web.
Unification of web and mobile is just ugly and useless. I'm not advocating for making the two wholly alien to each other, but there's a reason organizations use branding and design language. It's useful, but only when followed correctly. Effective use means the presentation on both platforms is visually connected by similar elements, but that does not mean "make web look like a bigger version of mobile". It's ugly, it's hard to use, and it's confusing. Pretty much the opposite of what you want from a website. So not only is it a skill issue* for the designer, it's also a design language issue.
*(Whoever is doing the site design needs to go take some UX/UI classes or something ffs. They clearly have zero eye for it.)
Just a hint, the majority of desktop web users are on wide screen monitors, which have the opposite orientation phones do. But you've designed the page for a vertical orientation, so everything looks stretched out yet crammed together at the same time. There's no balance. Try viewing the desktop web with any monitor that will do vertical orientation, next to one that is in horizontal. You'll see what I mean.
If I had the time and resources I'd mock up some better layouts myself, just to show how it could be done in a way that works, but I am tapped out mentally right now. Plus why do that work for free.
Hey @staff just wondering did any of you ever study web design
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just feels like you're intentionally making the desktop interface an inhospitable place in order to drive users toward the app or off the site entirely. Is that what you were going for? If so good job I guess.

And I get push back every time I bring it up. The experts on campus have it all worked out and I should respect their authori-teh.
Replacing physical buttons and controls with touchscreens also means removing accessibility features. Physical buttons can be textured or have Braille and can be located by touch and don't need to be pressed with a bare finger. Touchscreens usually require precise taps and hand-eye coordination for the same task.
Many point-of-sale machines now are essentially just a smartphone with a card reader attached and the interface. The control layout can change at a moment's notice and there are no physical boundaries between buttons. With a keypad-style machine, the buttons are always in the same place and can be located by touch, especially since the middle button has a raised ridge on it.
Buttons can also be located by touch without activating them, which enables a "locate then press" style of interaction which is not possible on touchscreens, where even light touches will register as presses and the buttons must be located visually rather than by touch.
When elevator or door controls are replaced by touch screens, will existing accessibility features be preserved, or will some people no longer be able to use those controls?
Who is allowed to control the physical world, and who is making that decision?

A well-designed website or app is more than just a digital storefront — it’s a 24/7 marketing tool, a brand identity, and a customer service platform all in one. Here’s why investing in professional website and app development is crucial:
đŸ”č First Impressions Matter — It takes just 0.05 seconds for users to form an opinion about your website. A professional design ensures that the first impression is positive.
đŸ”č Mobile Users Dominate — Over 60% of website traffic comes from mobile devices, making mobile-friendly design and app development a top priority.
đŸ”č Speed Equals Sales — A 1-second delay in page load time can lead to a 7% drop in conversions. A professional team optimizes performance to keep users engaged.
