“People ask me this all the time, they’re like what’s it like to be male, and I say well I don’t know, because I am male. It’s not an object to me, floating out there, that I can observe…it doesn’t work like that because in my experience, I can’t abstract maleness into an object apart from subjectively living it, occupying it, being it….And this can appear in an age of vanity as a great crisis. Because it means that within me there is a detachment between who I am and my image that I just can’t heal. I want to consume my own image, and I can’t, and it’s frustrating. It’s like, how can I occupy this maleness when I can’t even describe it because I’m so intimately close to it, I am it, that I can never possibly buy it off a shelf or take it and do seven steps to become it. You see this in heterosexual behavior as much as homosexual as much as transgenderism, which is men trying desperately trying to push their masculinity out into a number of products that they can buy in order to confirm that they’re men. Which you wouldn’t even do unless it was some crisis within yourself, like you needed it to become distant so you could consume it again so you can have a life-image correspondence. It’s like, alright, I'm buying beard oil and I’ve got a truck….Within this, women can appear as an object of envy, because your sex, it seems from my perspective, is an object. It’s not something that I have saturated with myself. It’s not the thing that I’ve already eaten and now I’m looking for something else. It’s the thing I don’t have….The point is that when the woman appears, she appears as an object in a way that maleness to the male can never appear. And so she appears as a possible object of consumption, and in that as salvation. Because then everything that’s weird and subjective about gender in the woman appears to be solid, whole, and understandable. I can investigate it. It has parts, it wears these clothes, it tends to do this sort of thing, it has this kind of voice—all are things that are objects to me. Not what’s flowing out of me, not what’s happening whether I would or no, it’s something out there.”
—Marc Barnes, Gender in a Big Beige World, starting around 1:43:19
#I need my identity to become distant so I can consume it!!!#our issues about gender flow from this prior issue about IDENTITY ITSELF#you cannot BE yourself except by OBJECTIFYING AND THEN CONSUMING yourself#posting this now because it’s been in my drafts and I think it’s an important addendum to the social media conversation#the apparatus of social media encourages us to see ourselves as objects#not only in the sense of it making our understanding of ourselves less than human#but in the sense that it gives us the desire to understand ourselves as if from the outside#when that is NOT what it is to be ‘I’!!!#the ‘I’ is not experienced as an object from the outside!#the ‘I’ is lived!#but that makes us crazy anxious for some reason and so we want to craft a beautiful grid on our instagram. THIS is who I am#OR we want to be able to read a series of clever posts in a personal tag on our tumblr blog: THIS is who I am#and the horrible thing is that algorithmic social media is taking that version of you that you’ve crafted & selling it to the highest bidde#so that WHO YOU ARE becomes a dialogue between your anxiety and the corporations trying to make money off you#hi I’m cate and I’m an addict

Twitter is not real. The people who drive engagement on Twitter do not have the pulse of what happens in real life. If what was said and hyped on Twitter were real, there would have been a very different election result. So for the love of god stop believing anything you hear there (or any platform) and just live your lives and engage with the things that matter to you and stop worrying about about what people on the internet are saying.
#I need people to understand how algorithms work and you’re seeing things because you engage with things#and social media is designed to trigger the addictive and anxious tendencies to stoke fear and thus more engagement#whether we’re talking about Taylor or sports or politics#this is not what people outside of your platforms are saying and doing so don’t believe a word you read#especially not on platforms owned by oligarchs set to ruin the country

to everyone rb’ing/commenting on my art/everyone who fav’d it on tiktok n in general all the support for my writing n art n creations the last month??? i want you to know you have rendered me into a permanent state of this:
#txt#virgil vents#laughed my ass off bc i legit posted my speedpaint on tt (super ooc for me i never post there)#got 200 views or so and was like OHHMYHOD THATS CRAZY#goes to fyp -> scrolls 3 x -> large artists complaining about only getting 200 views#and don’t get me wrong i understand that like 200 isnt a lot by like todays social media standards#but considering for over a decade now#not even five other people have seen my art#the fact that ive gone from that to. TWO HUNDRED. seeing it in the span of like an hour#???????? hello????? thats huge#idk maybe someone else could use this reminder too so ill say it:#dont measure ur value by the numerical statistics of views or likes or rb’s#its ok to want recognition and for your work to be seen or interacted with! its ok to post/create bc u want to share it w others#but don’t get caught up in the How Many = How Much I Matter trap#the algorithm isnt made for you to feel good its made for you to compare constantly#but like… idk.#maybe its just bc im still new to posting what i make#but 200 views is a huge deal to me?#1k hits and 4 comments on ao3 is GIANT to me#like these things end up feeling small to people over time as they gain traction & i understand that#but… i think we lose our roots (& minds) sometimes trying so hard to Be Seen or Be Recognized or just. wanting to feel Good Enough.#but what you make isnt good enough bc someone else sees it as that#its good enough because it came from you! because you did it! you made it and you shared it and you drew from an experience and learned#and are sharing that with the world. and that? that is always good enough#<- idk reminders for myself obviously too but lol#it was ironic legit being like WAHHHH I GOT 200 VIEWS IM SHITTING MY PANTS to immediately#big name artist complaining about that exact amount of views lmfaoooo#like actually no im sorry fyp i dont relate to that!!! those 200 views mean everything to me! people FAVORITED IT!!!#someone commented HOLY SHIT on just my wip!!!!!!#thats??? enough for me!??? someone saw it. someone loved it. someone thought it was worth saving. someone read my words. someone commented

sometimes I’ll open the trending page to see what’s new and the second I lock eyes with that generic washed out tumblr genre of “raw line” posts I go a little insane. comedy doesn’t mean anything when everyone is trying to be funny.

When I was a child, I didn't have any friends. The children my age didn't understand me, as much as I didn't understand them. Little me had a hyperactive brain, full of questions, anger, and fears. The adults could barely get a grasp as well, and more than once they had asked me: "aren't you too young to be like this?" Be like what, I couldn't tell. I was just me, weird little me. Asking too many questions, speaking too much of my mind, quick to anger, even quicker to cry, plucking my hair out at the smallest inconvenience. Nobody had the time of day for any of that, at least not the time that I needed. I was a lonely child, and in my loneliness I was an unhappy child.
And then I learned how to read.
I rarely take the time to celebrate the child I was, because I used to hate her so much. Couldn't give her the time of day. While others would talk about the good old days, I'd call mine "the moment everything went downhill". But truth be told, I was a curious child. I was bold and cared about others' wellbeing when nobody would. I had a mind full of fears, but also full of courage. And, more than anything, I learned early that nobody is truly lonely with a book in their hands.
#digital art#mat#procreate#my art#books and reading#i don’t have any incentive to post on social media bc i don’t understand algorithms and nobody sees what I do lmao

suggestion for improving tumblr
tl;dr: allow users to add “tags” to their blog as a whole, then make those searchable, so it’s easier to find people to follow who post/reblog about what you’re interested in
so, tumblr corporate wants to get new users/get occasional tumblr users to make an account and use it. as far as im concerned, that’s fine, as long as they don’t wreck the things existing tumblr users like about tumblr.
because all other social media is algorithmic garbage, it seems like a lot of new users join, don’t understand that they have to find people to follow themselves and/or don’t know where to start looking for people to follow, so they leave.
this is my proposed solution to that. basically, as well as having a url, icon, header image, etc, users can also add “tags” to their blog, describing what they post about. adding tags would be completely optional, and what they contain would be entirely written by blog owners with no algorithms involved.
either include in current search or make a new search for just this (and also just like. have a functional search lol). for new users have a thing pointing out that this exists and they should use it to find people to follow
this would also be useful for older users in that like. when i get into a new fandom i want to follow people who post about it frequently, but current search only shows me original posts about it - i also want to follow people who reblog a lot even if they don’t make original content
potential issues/solutions:
scammers and spammers: make it so u can’t add “tags” to ur blog until it reaches a certain age, or has a certain number of posts, or something, so they cant just create 100000 blogs at once and “tag” them all
people “tag” literally anything theyve ever been interested in even if they never really post about it: limit it to like, 5 “tags” total. possibly still some issues with people who forget to update theirs over time but id prefer that to algorithmic bullshit
people deliberately tagging themselves to trick others into following them for malicious reasons (eg someone who posts racist shit tags themselves as BLM or something bc they wanna hurt people): bannable offense. also tumblr fix moderation pls
#tumblr#social media#tumblr staff#basically what i want is like. i want tumblr to be user friendly#and decisions about how ur blog works controlled by users#but also i do understand that a) tumblrs gotta make money somehow and b) theres a whole generation whove only ever used#algorithmic shit#so like. i wanna think of ways tumblr can do better without pissing off everyone who's currently here

Tumblr’s Core Product Strategy
Here at Tumblr, we’ve been working hard on reorganizing how we work in a bid to gain more users. A larger user base means a more sustainable company, and means we get to stick around and do this thing with you all a bit longer. What follows is the strategy we're using to accomplish the goal of user growth. The @labs group has published a bit already, but this is bigger. We’re publishing it publicly for the first time, in an effort to work more transparently with all of you in the Tumblr community. This strategy provides guidance amid limited resources, allowing our teams to focus on specific key areas to ensure Tumblr’s future.
The Diagnosis
In order for Tumblr to grow, we need to fix the core experience that makes Tumblr a useful place for users. The underlying problem is that Tumblr is not easy to use. Historically, we have expected users to curate their feeds and lean into curating their experience. But this expectation introduces friction to the user experience and only serves a small portion of our audience.
Tumblr’s competitive advantage lies in its unique content and vibrant communities. As the forerunner of internet culture, Tumblr encompasses a wide range of interests, such as entertainment, art, gaming, fandom, fashion, and music. People come to Tumblr to immerse themselves in this culture, making it essential for us to ensure a seamless connection between people and content.
To guarantee Tumblr’s continued success, we’ve got to prioritize fostering that seamless connection between people and content. This involves attracting and retaining new users and creators, nurturing their growth, and encouraging frequent engagement with the platform.
Our Guiding Principles
To enhance Tumblr’s usability, we must address these core guiding principles.
Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.
Provide high-quality content with every app launch.
Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.
Retain and grow our creator base.
Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.
Improve the platform’s performance, stability, and quality.
Below is a deep dive into each of these principles.
Principle 1: Expand the ways new users can discover and sign up for Tumblr.
Tumblr has a “top of the funnel” issue in converting non-users into engaged logged-in users. We also have not invested in industry standard SEO practices to ensure a robust top of the funnel. The referral traffic that we do get from external sources is dispersed across different pages with inconsistent user experiences, which results in a missed opportunity to convert these users into regular Tumblr users. For example, users from search engines often land on pages within the blog network and blog view—where there isn’t much of a reason to sign up.
We need to experiment with logged-out tumblr.com to ensure we are capturing the highest potential conversion rate for visitors into sign-ups and log-ins. We might want to explore showing the potential future user the full breadth of content that Tumblr has to offer on our logged-out pages. We want people to be able to easily understand the potential behind Tumblr without having to navigate multiple tabs and pages to figure it out. Our current logged-out explore page does very little to help users understand “what is Tumblr.” which is a missed opportunity to get people excited about joining the site.
Actions & Next Steps
Improving Tumblr’s search engine optimization (SEO) practices to be in line with industry standards.
Experiment with logged out tumblr.com to achieve the highest conversion rate for sign-ups and log-ins, explore ways for visitors to “get” Tumblr and entice them to sign up.
Principle 2: Provide high-quality content with every app launch.
We need to ensure the highest quality user experience by presenting fresh and relevant content tailored to the user’s diverse interests during each session. If the user has a bad content experience, the fault lies with the product.
The default position should always be that the user does not know how to navigate the application. Additionally, we need to ensure that when people search for content related to their interests, it is easily accessible without any confusing limitations or unexpected roadblocks in their journey.
Being a 15-year-old brand is tough because the brand carries the baggage of a person’s preconceived impressions of Tumblr. On average, a user only sees 25 posts per session, so the first 25 posts have to convey the value of Tumblr: it is a vibrant community with lots of untapped potential. We never want to leave the user believing that Tumblr is a place that is stale and not relevant.
Actions & Next Steps
Deliver great content each time the app is opened.
Make it easier for users to understand where the vibrant communities on Tumblr are.
Improve our algorithmic ranking capabilities across all feeds.
Principle 3: Facilitate easier user participation in conversations.
Part of Tumblr’s charm lies in its capacity to showcase the evolution of conversations and the clever remarks found within reblog chains and replies. Engaging in these discussions should be enjoyable and effortless.
Unfortunately, the current way that conversations work on Tumblr across replies and reblogs is confusing for new users. The limitations around engaging with individual reblogs, replies only applying to the original post, and the inability to easily follow threaded conversations make it difficult for users to join the conversation.
Actions & Next Steps
Address the confusion within replies and reblogs.
Improve the conversational posting features around replies and reblogs.
Allow engagements on individual replies and reblogs.
Make it easier for users to follow the various conversation paths within a reblog thread.
Remove clutter in the conversation by collapsing reblog threads.
Explore the feasibility of removing duplicate reblogs within a user’s Following feed.
Principle 4: Retain and grow our creator base.
Creators are essential to the Tumblr community. However, we haven’t always had a consistent and coordinated effort around retaining, nurturing, and growing our creator base.
Being a new creator on Tumblr can be intimidating, with a high likelihood of leaving or disappointment upon sharing creations without receiving engagement or feedback. We need to ensure that we have the expected creator tools and foster the rewarding feedback loops that keep creators around and enable them to thrive.
The lack of feedback stems from the outdated decision to only show content from followed blogs on the main dashboard feed (“Following”), perpetuating a cycle where popular blogs continue to gain more visibility at the expense of helping new creators. To address this, we need to prioritize supporting and nurturing the growth of new creators on the platform.
It is also imperative that creators, like everyone on Tumblr, feel safe and in control of their experience. Whether it be an ask from the community or engagement on a post, being successful on Tumblr should never feel like a punishing experience.
Actions & Next Steps
Get creators’ new content in front of people who are interested in it.
Improve the feedback loop for creators, incentivizing them to continue posting.
Build mechanisms to protect creators from being spammed by notifications when they go viral.
Expand ways to co-create content, such as by adding the capability to embed Tumblr links in posts.
Principle 5: Create patterns that encourage users to keep returning to Tumblr.
Push notifications and emails are essential tools to increase user engagement, improve user retention, and facilitate content discovery. Our strategy of reaching out to you, the user, should be well-coordinated across product, commercial, and marketing teams.
Our messaging strategy needs to be personalized and adapt to a user’s shifting interests. Our messages should keep users in the know on the latest activity in their community, as well as keeping Tumblr top of mind as the place to go for witty takes and remixes of the latest shows and real-life events.
Most importantly, our messages should be thoughtful and should never come across as spammy.
Actions & Next Steps
Conduct an audit of our messaging strategy.
Address the issue of notifications getting too noisy; throttle, collapse or mute notifications where necessary.
Identify opportunities for personalization within our email messages.
Test what the right daily push notification limit is.
Send emails when a user has push notifications switched off.
Principle 6: Performance, stability and quality.
The stability and performance of our mobile apps have declined. There is a large backlog of production issues, with more bugs created than resolved over the last 300 days. If this continues, roughly one new unresolved production issue will be created every two days. Apps and backend systems that work well and don't crash are the foundation of a great Tumblr experience. Improving performance, stability, and quality will help us achieve sustainable operations for Tumblr.
Improve performance and stability: deliver crash-free, responsive, and fast-loading apps on Android, iOS, and web.
Improve quality: deliver the highest quality Tumblr experience to our users.
Move faster: provide APIs and services to unblock core product initiatives and launch new features coming out of Labs.
Conclusion
Our mission has always been to empower the world’s creators. We are wholly committed to ensuring Tumblr evolves in a way that supports our current users while improving areas that attract new creators, artists, and users. You deserve a digital home that works for you. You deserve the best tools and features to connect with your communities on a platform that prioritizes the easy discoverability of high-quality content. This is an invigorating time for Tumblr, and we couldn’t be more excited about our current strategy.
#fwiw i dont think it would be bad for tumblr to improve hooking new users to the platform#i wouldnt mind a second tab that does the stupid algorithm bullshit that every other social media service does#but i only wouldn’t mind this because i understand the economic reality of the situation. plus i think having a rotation of new users is +++#i would actually call it necessary for US not just the website to have lots of new users#but also. christ lord jesus. dont fuck with OUR current experience. this needs to be concurrent#because what makes this website special is that it ISNT addictive like tiktok or instagram or twitter. im on here daily but not frequently#not only will they chase me and over half of the remaining userbase away if they tamper with what they have going for them#for web3.0 horseshit WE ALL HATE#but they’ll hemorrhage more users than they’ll gain. simply because the algorithmic improvements wont be ready for a long time#please. just make the ‘for you’ tab better. dont mess with how i curated my feed#yess it took me years to set this up and yes thats not a profitable model and relying on that is why new users dont stick around#but if you FUCKING put reccomended bullshit on my normal timeline. i will leave#if the app becometh too addictive. i will leave#and if you start screwing with beloved features to experiment how you improve engagement stats. i will leave#and others have more/less tolerance for all of this.#you have a tricky balancing act to play. if you’re choosing growth you need to prioritize integrating new users into USERS LIKE US#im not frightened by this post automatically. clearly there’s a new direction and probably new staff so who knows where this will go#but they’re on thin ice and i dont trust they’ll tread lightly#turn new users into old users. we like this platform. others will too#basically just give better reccomendations in the algorithmic feed so that new users can quickly start curating the content they want to see#done! simple!#and also improve comment threads you could change that and improve engagement for your fuckass portfolios if you want

you don't need to censor the word "abortions" on reddit. it's not tiktok. you can use your grownup words.
#i understand why you need to censor certain things on tiktok#i think it's stupid but i don't put that on the users for trying to get around the algorithm#but when you censor yourself on other social media sites it's so immature and childish
