A Tale of Two Units. I don't understand how this 1941 2bd, 2ba, 875sqft co-op in the Bronx, NY could have depreciated from being listed for $325k in 2019 to it's current price of $275k + $1,204mo HOA. I'm showing the other exact same apt. in the bldg. that's also for sale for $310k. Which would you choose?
The other unit in this building is bland, white, & updated, but this one is so interesting and colorful. So, this is unit #5A.
There's room for a full-sized sofa as soon as you enter the units, in the foyer, and then there's this living room with back-to-back sofas. It's a little awkward.
This small room next to the kitchen is for dining.
The tiny pre-war building's kitchen has cute vintage appliances. It looks like the walls are covered in brick wallpaper.
Small ensuite shower room has lovely floor and wall tile.
This was the spacious primary bedroom before.
They changed the color of the wallpaper, but it better not be Photoshop b/c I'd be pissed if I went there and saw the same dingy paper. I love the original built-in closet in this room. It looks like it has a pull-out vanity table.
The full bath has a beautiful mural, original wainscoting, vintage fixtures and floor tile. The mural is a replica of Fragonard’s “The Bolt,” and required ACTUAL APPROVAL BY THE LOUVRE TO PRINT. Isn't that interesting? I think this apt.'s a little jewel box.
And, this is Unit #1A. It's been given a new floor and painted white. So, this is the same foyer that the other unit has.
Its living room has a fireplace with an electric insert, and it has some decorative molding on the walls.
This one has cabinetry in the small dining room, plus 2 drop-down tables.
The kitchen was completely renovated with new appliances, cabinets and backsplash.
The completely updated shower room.
That beautiful original wall unit was replaced in the primary bedroom by two mirror-doored closets.
The other listing doesn't show the 2nd bedroom, but this one does. It also has a mirrored closet.
The main bath was renovated, but I keep thinking about the other one w/that mural and wainscoting.
Gee, look at the laundry room. There're only 2w/d's for the whole building?
The building's lobby. Meh. (Note the photo of a fire in the fireplace, all warped.) I would definitely choose Unit #5A b/c it has character.

The Grumman X-29 Experimental Aircraft
The Grumman X-29 was an experimental aircraft developed by the United States in the 1980s, aimed at testing advanced aviation technologies. One of its most unique features was its forward-swept wings, which improved maneuverability and reduced drag. However, this design introduced significant aerodynamic challenges, such as the tendency of the wings to twist under stress. To address this, the X-29 utilized advanced composite materials, which provided the necessary strength without adding excess weight.
The X-29 was inherently unstable due to its forward-swept wings, necessitating a sophisticated digital fly-by-wire control system. This system allowed a computer to continuously make adjustments to keep the aircraft stable during flight. Additionally, the aircraft featured canard control surfaces, located in front of the main wings, which enhanced control and maneuverability, particularly at high angles of attack.
Another key feature of the X-29 was its variable-geometry engine inlets, designed to optimize airflow into the engine across different flight conditions. This design allowed the aircraft to maintain efficiency at various speeds and altitudes. Together, these innovative design elements made the X-29 a complex and advanced aircraft for its time.
The X-29 first flew on December 14, 1984, under the management of NASA and the United States Air Force. Two X-29 aircraft were constructed, and they accumulated over 400 test flights. These tests focused on exploring the aircraft's unique aerodynamic and flight control characteristics, providing valuable data on how forward-swept wings performed under various conditions.
The primary objective of the X-29 program was to investigate technologies that could be used in future fighter aircraft, with a particular focus on improving maneuverability and control at high angles of attack. Although the X-29 was never intended to enter production, the insights gained from its development contributed to future advancements in aircraft design.
While the X-29 did not see operational service, its legacy is significant. The technologies it explored, including forward-swept wings, composite materials, and digital flight controls, paved the way for innovations in fighter aircraft. Today, the X-29 is remembered as an important milestone in the study of unconventional aircraft designs and aerodynamics.
An interesting and lesser-known fact about the Grumman X-29 is that, despite its radical design, the aircraft reused components from existing fighter jets to save on development costs. Specifically, the fuselage of the X-29 was derived from the Northrop F-5A Freedom Fighter, and its landing gear was taken from the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon. This blending of cutting-edge technology with proven components from earlier aircraft helped keep the project within a more manageable budget, demonstrating a creative approach to experimental aircraft design during that era.

I've always been so curious (because you're a great writer/great at plotting) what your version of 9-1-1 would have been if Buck and Eddie had gotten together by season 5 like it was originally planned. Obviously interested to know what their storyline looks like, but how, with them together, other character's storylines change too!
First of all, that is so kind, thank you for saying that! I did actually have a post floating around here many years ago that outlined "my" plan for Buck and Eddie's relationship but I can't find it. I still remember it though:
Season Two: Obviously this is their first meeting and the development of their relationship.
Season Three: Buck and Eddie's relationship gets deeper.
Season Four: The shooting leading to Eddie's feelings realization.
Season Five (5A): Buck and Eddie would have been them struggling to cope with the events of the shooting on their own in a callback to May saying something to the tune of "we all suffered something horrible together, but we're dealing with it individually" with the ultimate realization that, if they were going to heal at all, they'd have to heal together. What got lost to Season 5 was the fact that the shooting happened to Buck too. It was something that happened to both of them and we never got to see that; so, in my plan for Season 5A, they would have both struggled with the aftermath.
Season Five (5B): Buck and Eddie would process through the events of the shooting together. Most of the Season Five we received in canon actually unfolded the way I planned. The only thing I would have done differently, as I said, would be to have the shooting visibly effect both Buck and Eddie, and have evidence that Buck was living at the Diaz residence (even if just on the sofa) to show the way the shooting disrupted their behaviors and changed their status quo. The breakdown would have still happened, though Buck would have hugged/held him during it, and they would have had their first kiss in 5x18 (HenRen vow renewal episode was a perfect opportunity).
Season Six: The honeymoon stage + adjustment season for the characters and the audience. Buck and Eddie are best friends and they have a good dynamic, but how does that translate to being romantic partners? What things do they learn about each other as boyfriends that they wouldn't have learned as best friends? Christopher loves Buck, but how does he react to Buck being in his life, not just as Buck, but as a co-parent with ability to ground him for wrongdoing? How does their romantic relationship impact their working relationship? How do their coworkers respond? So Season Six would have been about exploring their giddy, new relationship bliss while also asking and answering those questions.
Season Seven: With Buck and Eddie settled in their relationship, Season Seven would be where their relationship would hit its first major hurdle. When I write friction between couples (ha), there are two types of conflicts that I draw from: internal conflict and external conflict. Internal conflict relates to friction between the couple as a result of one or both of their actions (i.e. a white lie) and external conflict relates to something that occurs outside their unit (i.e. a tragedy). For Season Seven, they would work through an internal conflict. The conflict in question would be something relating to Eddie's internalized queerphobia or Buck's penchant for flirting/cheating. Something that would really break through their bubble of bliss of cause them to question if they really want to be together even when it's not easy. So, the first half of 7A would build to a fight in the 7A finale, first half of 7B would be them seeking counsel from other people and trying to decide what they want from their relationship, and 7B finale would be the conflict resolution.
Season Eight: When I first created this idea in my head, I planned it out with the idea of 9-1-1 ending in Season Eight (🥲). So with the idea in mind that Buck and Eddie have chosen a relationship with each other, even when it's difficult, Season Eight would have been an external conflict. As painful as it is, Bobby would have still died. But that would have happened in 8A so that Buck and Eddie could navigate that loss as a couple, and so they and the rest of the characters could take their time with their grief before the series finale.
I don't know how their storyline(s) would interact with the other characters because I've never thought it beyond the Season Six questions of how their dynamic would impact their working relationships but! It's an interesting question! I'll have to give it some thought. 🤔

my official teen wolf seasons ranking because i just finished the whole show and need to talk about it:
#1: season 3b (duh)
this is unanimous in the fandom, and i think it’s 90% to do with dylan o’brien getting the opportunity to be a great actor. everyone say “thank you dylan o’brien.”
also the only time teen wolf (the show) committed, grew some balls, and killed a main character off. good for them (until the movie, but let’s not talk about that yet!)
i have a lot of issues with it, as i do with every season— mostly having to do with the pacing and the poor foundation the villain of the season was set up on. teen wolf just kept throwing new bad guys and lore at us and expected the audience to not be confused as hell???
anyways…
#2: season 5a
i actually really liked the dread doctors! i think the first half of season 5 is stronger than the second half because the dread doctors are the main villains. the doctors have arguably the best character designs in the whole show. they looked cool and the way they moved was cool.
this season also gave us theo, which i love the idea of and somewhat liked the way they used him. could’ve done more with him as an antagonist, and also should have utilized scott and liam’s pack dynamics more.
#3: season 1
nostalgia, mostly.
no other notes.
#4: season 2
also here for nostalgia, but at least the plot of mostly coherent? that reason alone, and the addition of isaac lahey and cora hale <3, is why it’s placed above the others below.
but matt was a terrible character and his motivations were stupid. never should have existed. at least he died.
#5: season 6a
the cinematography was a big step up from every other season. making this season half easier on the eyes made the plot more palatable for me.
the wild hunt plot was… fine? i guess? was crammed in very clumsily, but all villains kind of are in teen wolf. the insane lore drops were especially diabolical this season though.
#6: season 3a
i liked that the villain of this half (the alpha pack) was set up prior to their appearance, making them one of the few villains that made sense… but even being coherent couldn’t save it from feeling rushed.
the alpha pack plot should have been its own season, not crammed into the first half to make room for a whole new plot in the second half. teen wolf just never knew when to let up on the gas pedal.
i liked the mystery sub-plot of the ritualistic murders, but its conclusion fell flat for me. didn’t care for jennifer’s storyline at all.
honestly? this half season and 6a were really close for me, but 6a’s cinematography just barely won it that #5 spot. kali’s feet claws didn’t help either.
#7: season 5b
the weak link of season 5. the dread doctors were more interesting without the beast of gevaudan and all that bullshit with eichen house.
the beasts’ design was ugly and is most of the reason why i don’t like it, but also because??? huh??? the dread doctors should’ve had a different reason for making the chimeras because that was dumb as hell. mason being the beast was also a horrible plot twist. didn’t vibe.
the saving grace was the chimeras. they were interesting. i liked their dynamic, and i generally enjoyed theo’s arc that season as a villain but felt they could’ve done more with him and his motivations.
LOVED to see pack drama. we needed more pack stuff in this show. watching the pack start to drift apart and break was really interesting to watch, but it would’ve been even better if the pack dynamics and relationships were more fleshed out prior to this. i would’ve felt their divide more if i was given more of them actually united.
felt more betrayed by 5b because 5a was as good as it was. the ending did not stick the landing for me.
#8: season 4a
why are we in mexico all of a sudden? how exactly did derek age regress? why is kate alive? and why is she a were-jaguar? why is the hale family vault hinder the high school— and yes i get that it was build before the school was made, but that doesn’t explain the secret passageways in the school—? how did peter’s coma genocidal thoughts reach meredith? why are we not addressing that kate is a pedophile?
most egregiously to me: they completely fumbled the idea of scott having a beta. liam being bitten on accident robbed scott of any agency as a character. furthermore, them neglecting the alpha and beta bond between scott and liam was really disappointing. scott should have been more of brother, maybe even parental, figure towards liam because of the alpha-beta dynamics at play.
i hated this season. it’s a miracle i even finished it at all. i wanted to repeatedly bash my head against a wall until i ended up in a coma where i telepathically influenced a mentally ill banshee teenager into making a hit list of the teen wolf writers room.
#9: season 6b
anticlimactic. incoherent. convoluted. impatient. unsatisfying. disappointing.
the anuk-ite was an unnecessary addition. this season should’ve been solely about the hunters and monroe.
i was initially excited for a human villain to be introduced, to see the wolf pack have to deal with more mundane horrors and play into the plethora of allegorical opportunities of lycanthropy… the 6b failed to deliver anything at all.
monroe’s motivation was idiotic and weak. gerard is a lazy bad guy to shoehorn in. the fight scenes, which should’ve been the highlight, were poorly choreographed. the makeup work was uninspired. the music was bad enough to break any immersion i might have had.
i was watching this half and got to the final episode and had to double check that it was, in fact, the series finale because it didn’t feel final. i didn’t feel that anything was being built up to. i felt like i got lost in the woods or something.
also the cinematography was weaker than the first half for some reason??? how did they manage that?
#10: season 4b
without the deadpool, season 4b was a miserable, frustrating, and boring experience. i have a headache just thinking about it.

TTRPG's in 2024
So compared to the last couple years of tabletop games with friends, we got a lot more game sessions in. A large part of that being my willingness to step into the role of Dungeon Master, and basically pushing my campaign for a large part of the year. We were also flexible in availability and the number of players per session. But I'll go into those details later when talking about specific campaigns.
The other big change this year is to do with the title of this post. This is not just a celebration of D&D play anymore. Our other recurring Game Master this year had us playing other types of Tabletop RPG, experimenting in different types of game rules and storytelling. This same GM introduced us to the Pokémon TTRPG a couple years back, but with the addition of Vampire the Masquerade this year, I felt it disingenuous not to acknowledge our variety in game systems in the title.
Here's our stats for 2024:
We played 27 sessions of TTRPGs this year, across 3 ongoing campaigns in D&D, PTU, VtM, and 2 One-shots. This corresponded with 27 session arts.
I was a player character in 2 campaigns, and a DM for 1 campaign and the two One-shots.
The Lich Who Stole Christmas was last year's Christmas/New Years One-shot, but I finished the art and summary this year.
Call of the Netherdeep was our main Dungeons & Dragons long campaign for the year, and I was the DM.
We completed sessions 1-4 of Netherdeep last year, and sessions 5-16 this year. This also includes accompanying parallel sessions 5A, 10B, 11B, 12B, 13B which were played from the perspective of a rival party. The total number of sessions in this campaign this year was 17, bringing the total to 21.
Pokémon Oster, our Pokémon Tabletop United campaign, returns from last year. Sessions 1-5 happened in 2022, sessions 6-9 happened in 2023, and sessions 10-16 happened this year.
The GM for Pokémon Oster decided to put the campaign on hiatus at the end of the year to start his Vampire the Masquerade campaign.
The Southern Blood Rush is our VtM campaign. We played one session this year, and it will return next year.
Phandalin After Dark was our D&D Halloween One-shot for the year, and our first time trying the 2024 rule changes.
Call of the Netherdeep
My main contribution to D&D for the year was as Dungeon Master for a prewritten campaign called Call of the Netherdeep. This is an adventure set in the world of Exandria, the setting for Critical Role, which I made sure was not required reading for my players. Player buy-in became more about integrating the stories of individual characters as part of the adventure.
Since this year of TTRPGs was just as about my players as for me as a DM, I decided I would highlight their characters as a main part of this art.
Since I ran Netherdeep as a milestone campaign, it was up to me to decide when my players had achieved enough to level up. In my opinion, the middle part of the adventure, that aims to cover levels 5-9, is nowhere near enough content to justify that much experience. So I used aspects of several characters' backstories to invent longer side-quests. Of the 17 sessions I ran this year, 8 sessions explored adventures not in the book. Refer to sessions 10A-14A for one side adventure, and sessions 12B, 13B and 15 for the other.
Since I was running for 8 players, 5 in one party, and 3 in a rival party, I decided that once the party reached the main hub town, I could just run for whoever was free that week. This changed when I started running those aforementioned original adventures, but since those two stories ran in parallel, it became, "If I have all the players of Party A free, I'll run a session in their POV, if I only have players from Party B free, I'll run a session in their POV". The number of sessions I ended up running would not have been possible without this flexibility.
Pokémon Oster
Pokémon Oster is based in the fictional continent of Oster, the Pokémon equivalent to Australia. Our party of trainers has been exploring the west and central parts of the continent to uncover the mysteries of corrupted Pokémon called "Typos", and thwart the plans of evil(?) organisations Tech Industries and The Galactic Corporation. Last we saw our party, they met with a group of researchers searching for Oster's obscure Legendaries in hopes to stop a bigger force.
In this campaign I play as Darryl Fisher, a bogan from the south-east of Oster who has a drive for mystery and adventure. Darryl is a man of the sea; a fisherman, and a diver, who only trains Water type Pokemon. His partner Prinplup has helped the group out of a few scrapes, and his recently evolved Gyarados is sure to help them overcome many odds.
I play Darryl as blunt and a little stupid, but he is curious, and has a taste for the supernatural that I use to prompt my natural note-taking playstyle. I have the final roster of Pokemon he wants to train in his team already (once they all evolve of course). But if one of those mysterious Oster legendaries is a Water type, maybe he'd be intrigued.
The Southern Blood Rush
Vampire the Masquerade is a system that takes place in a world adjacent to the real world, but vampires and other supernatural creatures are real, and hide in the shadows, pulling the strings and having hidden wars of politics and espionage. The Southern Blood Rush is a story based in the World of Darkness's equivalent to the south coast in NSW Australia. The GM is actually running two campaigns that will run in parallel, with my group's campaign set in the city of Wollongong. Maybe further into the campaign we will have a crossover?
Graham Watson is my Vampire character. An Englishman by birth, Graham lived most of his long fulfilling life in Australia, before being turned into a Vampire at the age of 77. Graham's natural inclination to both the sciences and the occult attracted the attention of House Tremere, a clan of vampire mages. Since turning, Graham has gained the ability to control water, a discipline called Neptune's Wrath, and has used it to convince other vampires in Wollongong to make alliances.
I play Graham as careful, studious, and paranoid. He was about to ready to die, but now that he has eternity ahead of him, he is afraid of death more than ever. Graham tries to take a back seat in his coterie, but knows that the smaller presence of Tremere in his city means that he must sometimes show his hand to get what he wants.
One-Shot Adventures
The Lich Who Stole Christmas
October-November last year, I had my players for Netherdeep make spare characters for a One-Shot I ran called Frozen Memories. When it came to actually running the adventure, only 4 of my 8 players were free. But I had another adventure I wanted to run later, so on New Years Eve 2023, I ran another one-shot called The Lich Who Stole Christmas for all 8 players.
This was a fairly short and lighthearted adventure, and there's not much more to add. There were a couple riddles and puzzles that engaged the whole table. Combat wasn't difficult overall, even if the final boss gave them a bit of a scare. But the point wasn't to be challenging, it was to be fun, and I think this One-shot achieved that.
Phandalin After Dark
Toward the end of 2024, a couple of new D&D core books came out introducing updates to the current edition of D&D, unofficially known as 5.24 Edition. Since one of my Netherdeep players, Aerith the monk, had been using playtest versions of the new character options already, I decided we could use a one-shot to try out the new rules, and see if I want to implement them in the core campaign.
Phandalin After Dark was a prewritten adventure about a group of characters visiting a portion of the Shadowfell. I had all 8 players make up a character, but again, only 4 could play on the day. The adventure was good at building atmosphere, and the combat encounters were often very intimidating. But many puzzles often led to no tangible reward, just letting the characters live. It was an overall positive experience, and served its playtesting purpose, but I think the next one-shot I'll run will be more of a traditional dungeon crawler.
Next Year…
As of a couple months ago, I had decided to put Call of the Netherdeep on hiatus. The DM for Princes of the Apocalypse has expressed interest in starting up again in January, and the GM for Vampire wants to get in a few months on that campaign before getting back to Pokemon eventually.
After a good break, I will pick up Netherdeep again and hopefully finish that campaign next year. After that, who knows.

Tomorrow in Yekaterinburg an American woman will be sentenced for donating $51 to the Armed Forces of Ukraine 33-year-old Russian and US citizen Ksenia Karelina (Havana) admitted her guilt in financing the Ukrainian Armed Forces, SOTAvision reports . Ksenia is charged with treason (Article 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) for transferring $51 to the Ukrainian foundation Razom for Ukraine on the third day of the war in 2022. Today, Karelina's parents were questioned in the case. According to lawyer Mikhail Mushailov, the parties will debate tomorrow and a verdict will be announced. US Consul General Stuart Wilson came to support Ksenia. The case is being heard by Judge Andrei Mineev, who also delivered the verdict in the case of Evan Gershkovich. The trial is closed to the press and the public. The daughter of Yekaterinburg businessman Pavel Karelin, Ksenia Karelina, moved to the United States in 2015, and in 2021 she got married there and received American citizenship. The girl was detained on January 27 this year, when she came to visit her family in her hometown. She was sentenced to 14 days of arrest for swearing in a public place; presumably, at the same time, security forces found information on her phone about the transfer of funds to a Ukrainian fund. Two weeks later, upon leaving the special detention center, Karelina was detained by FSB officers and charged with treason. On February 8, Ksenia was sent to a pretrial detention center. 📍 Sverdlovsk Regional Court, Yekaterinburg, Moskovskaya St., 120, Judge Mineev, Courtroom 5a, starts at 11:00

Hello 2025. Ive taken a break since the change over to the new year. Not even sure where I left off. I did finish my Daily Drawing Challenge and then just bounced. I had plans for the end of this year. Its a good time for vlog videos. I had plans to do like, another, Christmas artist wish list guide, or favorite art supplies, or year-of-art round up. I wanted to put my daily drawings into book format and possibly print it out for me.
and I just can't seem to get art motivated at the moment. We have been in our townhome for almost 2 months now. I'm halfway through my orientation for my new unit. Normally, Id want to complain about having to work but I had that nice long sabbatical last year. Feel like I gotta work a while before I start complaining I'm tired again. My current job is in a very niche nursing environment thats hard to get into. Since covid, I told myself Id never work full time again for a hospital but this field is so unique, I thought it'd be worth the experience. So I'm pretending its more like school than anything else. I have a couple pretend semesters and I'm done. But it is full time and theres on call requirements. Its 4x10s. Which Ive done before but the hours arent great. 730a-6p. It makes it feel like they're 4, 12 hour shifts and not 10s. So I'm exhausted. When I did 10s years ago it was 5a-330p and sometimes I'd get off early around 130 or 230 and theres a ton of afternoon left to do things. Now, I go to work, come home, fall asleep. Also, its complicated further in that, I may be a little pregnant. I have felt sick this entire time. I feel better now than I did in November. I think the second semester is kicking in but it feels like you're on deaths door all the time.
so in about 6 months, Ill have a nice little mini vacation from work again. I don't qualify for any form of fmla and I'm trying to bank $$ and PTO as best I can until then. I'm hoping I can get a short term disability. I dont know about my ability to bounce back that quick. My husband and I are still talking about our different options on what to do for child care at that point.
but another thing I finished were my 2, 5 year journals. I really wanted to go out and get maybe a single year journal. The 5 year was a huge pain to fill out. Its got some cool stuff in it, I guess, if you consider the world events that have happened in the past 5 years. But filling it out was an ordeal. I kind of wanted to do a single year journal and maybe fill it out in english, spanish and french..and I wanted to pick up an art journal to just do silly waste-paint-no-stress doodles. But lord knows, journals cost a crazy amount these days. I chickened out.
anyway, my husbands birthday is soon. Valentines day is soon. Its a snow-pocalypse right now outside. I'm waiting for warm weather and then maybe we can do some cute pregnant girl site seeing shit.

USA BASEBALL RPF (MODERN SETTING) 2 - Campaigns in the Ukraine (Chapter 5a)
(AN: It's been a long way since I last wrote on Tumblr. I've been doing one shots set in the war on Discord on my server there and will transcribe them here. With the situation as worse as two years ago, I have long had a writing pause to focus on Discord. But still, I did some content there, here on Tumblr, and now on Substack. I am still writing now on what the 78th BCT prepared for in the weeks and months before and after the start of their Ukrainian deployment, and expect that there will be chaptered one shots set in Ukrainian battlefields, both on the perspective of the 1st Battalion and of those individual fighters as well. I have resumed writing the RPF of the hockey boys and girls too. All these I do so that not only the world be aware of what is going on in Ukraine be known and that every effort be made to help arming the nation and financially assist its defense industry and national reconstruction, but also so that the memory of the fighting men and women of Ukraine and the many international fighters especially those who have perished will be remembered long after the end of this war. These first chapters will also serve as an introduction to the cast of characters of this series.)

DUKE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS
DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA
Friday, January 15, 2022
1045H EST
For the first time since activation elements of A and B Companies of 1st Battalion performed their first weekly Combat Water Survival tests in preparation for their potential Ukrainian deployment. The reason why is not just as a refresher training given that all those who were called for the mobilization program already had it done, but also to prepare for scenarios of crossing the rivers and lakes of Ukraine - as well as marshlands and swamps - without any vehicle or boat support, as well as in any scenario of any type of bridge being destroyed by Russian enemy fire as well as any Russian destruction of vehicles while crossing waterways by any means. Plans are made to make this a weekly duty as the other companies of the battalion are being activated from reserve and cadre status.
However Captain Frazier's 1st Platoon under 1LT Tyler Austin - the so-called Tokyo Boys - have some more time for swimming duties and water survival outside these, as per the behest of one of its men, as MAJ Sogard and some others view the proceedings. He can hear him shout "On me, go!" as the water splashes.
"Is that Sergeant Joe Ryan leading the company staff and 1st Platoon elements?"
BG Randolph replies, "He's the one. We all saw those swim pictures and videos he frequenly sent to us in Cary via email. He's grown so much since Tokyo."
"That's one of my A Company sergeants," the major answered.
Planned to be promoted to lieutenant colonel for his work in the brigade's reactivation to active duty, MAJ Scott Brosius added, "He's definitely been training in the pool in between our combat and training operations, Sogard."
"I'm sure he has been. And is that Major Nick Swisher?"
"Affirmative. Part of the 3rd NY, and as part of our brigade's training program, he has returned here to help in mobilization efforts. Ever the natural swimmer he is."
"Has Captain Plata known of this?"
"Has his seal of approval. And he's gonna make it a near daily duty outside of the weekly combat swim survival drills because 1st Battalion needs to be the vanguard in Ukraine operations."
"All normal so far for these lads, " added 1LT Mattalino. He says that through these and the other exercises they have been kept even more fit and healthy for operations ahead.
Sergeant Joe Ryan of 2nd squad, 1st platoon of A Company had been a part of the 2021 mobilization unit and ever the swimmer he was, alongside some of that unit, he was the lead NCO whenever pool and open water swims would occur. A native of San Francisco, CA, Ryan was selected to be a part of the 98th Tampa Bay but by the time he was already in Japan as a member of the 78th Brigade's Tokyo task unit in July of 2021, he had been transferred to Minneapolis and the battalion of the 1st Minnesota based in St. Paul operationally, since he had been named a part of its 1st Battalion upon his transfer. Being the lead swimmer in such training fixtures whenever a water scenario occurs he has been a big motivator for everyone in A Company. Captain Jake Arrietta of B Company could not help but watch from the sidelines at poolside as Joe and the 1st platoon finished their individual swim drills and emerged from the pool, all wet and bodies drenched by the water, before transitioning to combat water training invidiually - this time wearing combat shorts or speedos unlike in the earlier training in full battle gear. In both cases, the servicemen would carry their M4 rifles, which they have been inspected so that they would not be damaged by exposing to the water. It has been Joe's duty to help the company adapt to their role as the assault vanguard and to help them be ready for such scenarios in inland waters or in ocean waters. In this manner and reflecting where the 78th BCT is planning to head for deployment duties, preparing to swim in the fast flowing rivers of Ukraine, its lakes and swamps would be very easy if everyone would be prepared either if the crossing would be by themselves carrying their gear and rifles, inflatable boats or by their combat vehicles. All this was Joe's proposal when the 2021 contingent got formed up, for while this would be a reminder of his swimming days out west when he was young, it would also prepare them for the hard tasks of having to cross any inland body of water without any form of vehicular support. All of these, supervised by the medical staff, lifeguards and battalion and company leadership, would continue even during their deployment as preparation for the tasks they would do there.
"Cannot believe this Dex. How cost THEY do that?" Jake asked his XO.
1LT Dexter Fowler replied, "They did this before in Japan, I was told, and right here at stateside."
SFC LaPorta added, "I'm sure Baker Company will do the same iin the future."
"Same for me here, hoping that we would do the same as they do", added SSGT Blaine Neal.
After individual and then squad level drills, Joe's group - the A Company officers and assigned NCOs and 1st platoon personnel together - would do platoon level swim duty as a group, as usual wearing speedos or shorts to simulate a platoon level river crossing without uniforms but with rifles. Everyone at poolside has been impressed by what they have done.
And then comes that part wherein the whole drill is repeated but with combat gear and bags to simulate moving these thru rivers and lakes.
After all come out of the pool and bring their bags and gear to poolside for a final inspection, Major Sogard greets them. "Well done 1st Platoon of A Company, and to you Sergeant Ryan. Your efforts will make this unit ready for what the coming weeks and months will bring."
"It was my idea after all, for I've been a swimmer all my life," the sergeant replied. After learning that the 78th would plan to come to the aid of Ukraine in case of the feared Russian invasion that week and indeed he and his companions were the first to be mobilized officially, he devised a plan, he said, to prepare his mates in the Tokyo contingent - the first ones of A Coy 1-78th IBCT that got mobilized - for the challenges that lay in Ukraine's rivers, lakes, marshes and swamplands and how to cross them in the absence of amphibious-ready armored vehicles and any crossable bridges in the immediate vicinity, either temporary or permanent. This would continue even after they have been deployed because such a duty would happen by order of company leadership.
"Have the rifles been checked, sarge, post-swim?"
"Yes sir, all well and in good condition."
"Well noted Ryan. Well done everyone. This is just a start for this company, right Captain Frazier?"
"Affirmative sir, " Todd replied. "We will do this again in a few days and then we will do it twice every week to prepare the boys for such scenarios."
"Same for me major," added CPT Tulowitzki.
"I hope this continues well for A Company. Dismissed."
As the major left, Todd looked to Sergeant Ryan, saying "There's more we can do to prepare for these. We have a hard task to do."
"Noted, captain. Is that the same, SFC Gose?"
The company first sergeant replied, "Yup. That's the same thing Joe."
"Hoping we're ready for the next one lads. There will be more of these that will come as we prepare to answer Ukraine's call."
78TH BRIGADE COMMAND MESS
1600H EST
"Maxwell, we now have a commander for D Company of 1st Battalion, also set to be activated from cadre status."
That was the word that LTC Dale Murphy informed BG Maxwell. The search was over, 1LT Bailey Ober can finally be appointed D Company CO by the orders of LTC Fenster.
"Who's that?" Maxwell asked.
"Assigned to 1st Battalion, 1st Minnesota based out of Minneapolis. He's from Huntersville."
"Why he is being recalled?"
"Part of 2014 contingent from universities and colleges, general. The very things he learned there he now applies as a platoon XO there," Dale replied.
"That explains everything. And who chose him?"
"Major Sogard, sir. On the suggestion of no less than Sergeant Joe Ryan from A Company."
Jason then ended the talk saying, "I therefore hope he will be informed at once that he's being recalled to the active ranks. He must be ready for his first command billet. So have you guys have found a company first sergeant for these boys now that this company will be reactivated from being in the reserves?"
"Yes also. SSGT Lucas Sims, 1st Battalion 1st Cincinnati City. He too will be informed in a few days of his appointment to the role."
Then Major Sogard arrived, stunned by the decision to activate D Company.
"It now has a new commander and first sergeant? That D Company?"
"Yes Major, the one being set to be prepared for active duty," replied LTC Murphy.
"Noted gents. In a few days from now we can finally activate this. We have to hand over command to the newly selected members of the command team. Those being cadre, the last of the peacetime rifle companies, are being transferred to the battalions being activated."
"Affirmative, major. Slowly 1st Battalion is completing its mobilization phrase."
"But how about the rest of 169th Corps? Have they been informed?"
BG Maxwell replied, "Now more than ever, we have to inform them we are being mobilized given what's going on in Ukraine. They better be ready to recieve the mobilization order from USEC Manfred and his command team led by LTG Halem, who for the past years was also Corps JAG until he handed over to a new general officer this year. We must be ready to tell them now is the time to prepare the work needed for mobilization, whether Russia gears up to invade Ukraine or not."
"Noted sir. And has Swaggerty been informed of the appointment of his company XO?"
"Yes he has been called of this," Sogard replied.
"I'm sure he will be ready to be recalled to active service."
"He will be ready, Josh, to renew his commissioning oath as he prepares for this new assignment."
"And is the 4th and 5th battalions set for activation orders?"
"Yes major. They will be raised soon."
"And our tank battalion?"
"Its M60s and Abrams are being reconditioned as well. They too will have drills with us. The same goes for our field artillery battalions, soon being set to become a regiment under brigade headquarters. We have a whole lot to do to prepare for our future operations in Ukraine, even the equipment, uniforms, weapons and logistics assistance needed."
"Noted sir. Back to D Company. Are we looking on who will be filling its ranks?"
"2013-2015 collegiate, 2017 and 2018 pre-training, 2011-2015 high schools. We will notify them at home and their families. If the names called are absent due to various reasons we will be informed. If overseas by the time they are being called, we will email them to ask them to be here in Cary. Those who are overseas who are willing to wear the uniform, we will try to call them even if not named in these lists. For they too will be a part of this if they accept that mission."
