It was approaching nightfall in Los Angeles on Sunday when black-clad demonstrators began to torch a row of self-driving Waymo taxis. Within minutes, videos of the fiery scenes began to pop up on social media.

“MORE. MORE AND MORE AND MORE,” a group known as Unity of Fields posted on X, along with a video of the flaming vehicles.

The post wasn’t an anomaly. Since the start of the demonstrations against immigration raids in Los Angeles, the Unity of Fields X account has been pumping out messages urging people to wreak havoc in the streets and “give 'em hell.”

It’s part of a far-left online ecosystem that has proliferated in recent years, experts say. Some of the groups behind the accounts express contempt for peaceful resistance and glorify acts of violence — and even murders, like those of the UnitedHealthcare CEO and two Israeli Embassy staffers.

The leftist networks tend to be different from right-wing groups in that they are typically decentralized with no leadership structures. But they can be highly adept at using social media, and some have been working hard to amplify and celebrate the acts of violent protesters in Los Angeles.

“Whether they directly threw a Molotov cocktail is actually not as essential as the ecosystem of encouragement and coordination they have created,” said Joel Finkelstein, a co-founder of the Network Contagion Research Institute, a nonpartisan group that tracks online extremism.

The unrest in Los Angeles follows a pattern that has played out in numerous cities over the past five years in which protests that break out remain mostly peaceful during the day, but at night agitators engage in fiery clashes with police.

That dynamic tends to distract from the focus of the demonstrations — in this case, workplace immigration raids by federal agents — and provide fodder to people who oppose them. In this case, that’s President Donald Trump and his supporters, who have sought to dismiss the broader protest movement as the work of “paid insurrectionists.”

“What’s concerning is the attempt to conflate the individual actors who do commit violence with the mass movement as a whole,” said Jon Lewis, a research fellow at the Program on Extremism at George Washington University.

He said the narrative pushed by some people on the right — in his words, that there’s a “roving band of antifa groupies who are following protests from city to city” — doesn’t comport with reality.

But, Lewis added, there has no doubt been a normalization of violence in parts of the left, although it is more fractured than in right-wing groups.

“It’s a little bit of anti-capitalist stuff in one case. A little bit of antisemitic stuff in another case,” he said. “I think that reflects the nature of those online leftist movements where there is no cohesive, central structure.”

More than 300 people have been arrested since the demonstrations broke out Friday in Los Angeles, police say. The charges include failure to disperse, looting, arson and attacks on police officers. Police Chief Jim McDonnell said demonstrators have shot commercial-grade fireworks at police officers and hurled pieces of concrete at them.

Were they the acts of lone wolves seizing an opportunity to target police? Or was there a level of coordination and planning among the instigators?

Experts say it’s likely to be a combination of both.

“You have the organized protests by people who are committed to a particular cause, and then you have radical fringes,” said Dan Byman, the director of the Warfare, Irregular Threats and Terrorism Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

“They might put on airs and call themselves anarchists or something like that, but they’re young people who like destruction.”

The Network Contagion Research Institute has been analyzing the rise of what it calls “anarcho-socialist extremism.” It has found that the chaos and violence that have broken out at some of the major protests in recent years, like those against the police killing of George Floyd in 2020, weren’t as spontaneous as they might have seemed.

“What we found in our research is there are groups that were attempting to exploit the situation, oftentimes after dark, and their coordination was somewhat sophisticated,” said Alex Goldenberg, a senior adviser to the Network Contagion Research Institute.

That involved demonstrators’ surveilling police movements and sharing tips about making the most destructive Molotov cocktails, Goldenberg said.

“They were trying to exploit an already volatile situation in an attempt to provoke violent clashes with police, create viral moments to inflame tensions and draw in others through emotional triggers,” he said.

Soon after it launched in 2019, the Network Contagion Research Institute focused on right-wing threats like the Boogaloos, a loose-knit anti-government movement that calls for violence against law enforcement and political opponents. But it soon found that left-wing groups were using many of the same tactics to incite violence.

A 2022 report by the institute found that animus toward law enforcement among anarchist types had been proliferating online for years. The appearance of posts with anti-police outrage and/or memes and coded language increased over 1,000% on Twitter and 300% on Reddit during the period of the Floyd protests in 2020, the report found.

‘Assassination culture’

One anti-police group, the People’s City Council Los Angeles, has taken to calling out the actions of officers at the protests, using expletives and slights.

Just before 1 a.m. Tuesday, it posted on X the name and picture of a police officer it said was firing rubber bullets at protesters.

He is “f-----g unhinged and unloading on protesters at point blank range,” the post read. “F--K THIS PIG!!”

On Sunday, the group posted a video showing a line of police officers in riot gear.

“LAPD trying to kettle right now,” the group wrote, referring to a crowd control tactic used by police. “Oink oink piggy piggy, we going make your life s----y…”

The violent demonstrators seemed to represent a mishmash of causes.

Many of the people seen hurling objects at police and setting fires were dressed in all black, their faces covered in masks. Some waved Mexican flags, others Palestinian flags. At least one man was photographed wearing a Hamas armband.

“Angelenos throwing Modelo Molotovs at ICE while wearing Keffiyehs,” read a post on X by Unity of Fields. “We are locked the f--k in, folks.”

Unity of Fields, which was formerly known as Palestine Action US, describes itself as a “militant front against the US-NATO-zionist axis of imperialism.”

“The Unity of Fields concept comes from the Palestinian resistance,” the group said last year in a blog post announcing the name change. “It refers to the coordination between all the factions on the battlefield despite their geographic fragmentation or ideological differences.”

Finkelstein, the co-founder of the Network Contagion Research Institute, said such groups and the people who follow them represent what he described as “assassination culture” — in which targeted killings are considered acceptable by those who harbor an array of grievances.

Unity of Fields, for example, is helping raise money to cover legal costs for Elias Rodriguez, the Chicago man accused of fatally shooting the Israeli Embassy workers outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington last month.

“My sense is that beneath these grievances is a shared sense of loss of control,” said Finkelstein, who is a psychologist and a neuroscientist. “Who are the people that really feel a sense of hopelessness in their lives? Most are looking for significance, and they think they found it here.”

In response to a request for comment, Unity of Fields wrote: “We will never condemn people who fight to free themselves. When the masses in Los Angeles began using direct action as a means of halting ICE-gestapo disappearances, the media saw only the violence of resistance and never the violence of the status quo.”

It added: “All acts of resistance to state violence are justified and all power belongs to the masses.”

The People’s City Council Los Angeles didn’t respond to a request for comment.

While the violent parts of the protests in Los Angeles began to die down Monday, demonstrations against the Trump administration’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants have spread to several other cities, including Boston, Chicago, Dallas and New York.

So far, none has experienced violence at the levels in Los Angeles, but whether that will remain the case is an open question. Unity of Fields has made it clear it’s hoping for a repeat in cities like New York.

“NYC, how are you gonna let Angelenos beat you at your favorite pastime (terrorizing police officers)?” the group said Monday on X. “Hamas Marxist Army get down there and show them what New Yorkers can do when they put their heads together!"

Friday finally came. Some after-work with the girls sounded like a great idea. It has been a long and hectic week. With all these campaigns falling into my lap, so many photoshoots and what not needing to be taken care of. Plus some stories needing to be written and posted on social media. When the food coma started coming off, it was time to pay. We paid and left the restaurant.

”Hey guys, you wanna go clubbing?”, Amy suddenly asked.

Soyeon and I looked at each other and shrugged our shoulders. ”Sure”, we said in unity.

After some walking, we finally found a club. The music was so loud, blaring through the speakers and people were dancing like no tomorrow.

This place was completely packed, with no room for air whatsoever. People were dancing and grinding on each other, hoping to bring someone home tonight. Amy and Soyeon found the bar and went to get some drinks. Meanwhile, I found a table with a leather couch and sat down to wait for the girls.

I observed my surroundings, seeing all kinds of people tonight. Some were here on a booty call mission, some were drinking by the bar, some were chatting by the bathrooms, and some stood by the wall by themselves and did the same as me. Observing. One guy particularly stood out.

“Girl, are you listening?” Soyeon asked and interrupted my zoning out moment I was having. I snapped out of my thoughts and cleared my throat “I’m sorry! Just zoned out a bit, tired from today's work heh…”. I gave my Soyeon a sheepish smile and asked her to continue her story. She was talking about her ex at some point and how he tried to get her back and Amy just told her to block his number and whatnot. I couldn’t help but back her up and tell her the same thing.

Then Amy told us something interesting. Some shit has been going down in Seoul lately. All over the damn city and people have been concerned about crime lately but the strange thing wasn’t the crime but how they were, could you say solved?! But not exactly…more like finding stalkers and creepy men that were reported for harassing and stalking women in dark alleys.

This was nothing out of the ordinary, unfortunately, but they were talking about them being found dead in the alleys and with their heads missing. People were wondering if there was an act of revenge going on from these women's families or if something else was going on... Some of these women who survived told stories of a tall black creature with sharp teeth and a long tongue saved them. Biting the perpetrator's heads off. People weren’t sure to believe it and questioned these women's sanities and some came up with weird conspiracies to explain the situation.

A few drinks in, tipsy and giggling like 3 hyenas, we felt ready to get on the dancefloor. Even though I’m not really a club person, sometimes it was fun to let loose. They played good songs tonight. I was dancing and swaying my hips to the beats, my hair flying from side to side, as I let the music possess me as if I were in a trance. I looked around for the handsome stranger again. He wasn’t leaning on the same wall I saw him on earlier anymore. Did he leave? Never mind. I turned my head to the bar and there he was. He was finishing his second whisky of the night. He was chatting with the bartender.

After some minutes, I felt a presence behind me. Praying to God it wasn’t some creep. I danced and pretended to not notice the mystery person behind me. This person wasn’t too close though, it was like they tested the waters. Swaying to the music with me, carefully putting their hand on the side of my hip.

I relaxed a little bit, this person didn’t seem too pushy and was not grabbing me inappropriately. I pushed myself closer to their body and put my hand on the side of their neck. “The name is Changkyun. What’s your name sweet thing?”, he purred and looked into my eyes. I smiled shyly and told him my name. “Pretty name for a pretty girl. Are you here alone tonight?”. Damn, he’s a good flirt too? Lord have mercy on my heart. I reluctantly shook my head slightly. “I’m here with my girls tonight, we had some after work. But I’m pretty sure they are busy dancing with some dudes somewhere in here”, I explained shrugging my shoulders. He nodded in understanding, still looking into my eyes. “Sounds wise, the world is a scary place. Good thing to stick together” he replied. I nodded in agreement.

We danced slowly, still holding each other and getting lost in each other's eyes. I really don’t keep eye contact longer than necessary. But with Changkyun it felt like comfortable silence. He seemed comfortable too. And then he broke the silence.

“Hey, would you like to accompany me to my place? Maybe a glass of wine and a continuation of our conversation? If that interests you, babe”.

I pretended to think long and hard before answering him. Making him slightly anxious to mess around a little bit. “Hmm, I don’t know Changkyun, you did say yourself that it’s not safe out there and I should be careful now, remember?”. I said trying my best to hold back my grin.

He saw right through me though, because of course this clever bastard did. He laughed and replied, “That’s true babe, that’s true. But I can promise that I will keep you safe”.

I smiled and giggled. “All right then, lead the way. I’m just going to text the girls that I found company”. He smiled back and nodded. I took out my phone to text the girls. Then we left the club and took a cab to his apartment.

The cab ride was quiet but comfortable. I rested my hand beside my seat while looking out the window, taking in the ambient city lights of Seoul. Changkyun side-eyed my hand and gently touched it. About 15 minutes later, we arrived at Changkyuns apartment. He lived in a tall building with many floors. We entered the elevator, and he pressed on number 12. He must have an amazing view. Changkyun gave me a tour of his apartment and told me about his job as an artist and producer.

Big hallway, nice kitchen with a kitchen island. Large living room with a huge TV and in the corner was his studio. And of course, a grand balcony with a breathtaking view of Seoul. He even had a staircase that led to his loft. Up there is where his bed was.

I nodded in agreement “Yeah, I agree. I mean, I’m not from this country but I totally understand the part of having to be in the big city”.

He nodded in agreement. “Tell me more about yourself babe, why did you come to Korea?”. Thinking of where to start, I took a second to take a big inhale and started telling my story. “Well, I think the simple answer is that I outgrew my city, and its people, and there were no work opportunities for me there. No matter how hard I tried to study and find a job, it never led me anywhere. Then one day an opportunity through a friend in my city came up about working as a Content Manager in Seoul, and it was a no-brainer for me. So, I took the opportunity and now I’m here. Akagi is the most gossipy teacher, always knowing and distributing the juiciest of high school drama. He is loved in his school for his fun and humor, vibing with his students. Kids are lucky to be in class with him, since he knows who is having a crush on who - guaranteeing to group them in projects and activities, celebrities, memes, and trends. He's been in the school for a long time, but when he joined, he was met with awkward nonchalance and shyness from his students and colleagues. However, they opened up - since Akagi makes sure his students have good class parties and help them with any issues related to physical or mental health.

People think he isn't strict, BUT HE IS. He would make you run 50 laps around the school during PE, and when students complain, say "That's what I used to do in PE too. Run. Don't talk." It's worse when you're on the volleyball team he coaches for. That's why some kids don't like him, complaining about how strict and demanding he is.

He always show his homeroom class Ratatouille every Friday, so they call him the "Ratatouille teacher". Some even joked he looked like Remy. Even though the class complains about showing it to them all the time or requests a different movie, Akagi tells them Ratatouille is a classic that should be watched many times (it's his fav childhood movie).

He also likes and likes to make corny jokes, is the shortest but strongest teacher, and drinks energy drinks and protein shakes instead of coffee. He acts really funny drinking energy drinks - some students sometimes have a good snicker out of that - running around and being jittery, talking fast, being too excited. He also has a low alcohol tolerance, but no one needs to know. His desk only has cans of energy drinks, a computer, posters of Japanese volleyball players on the national team. Not even a pencil. His classroom is bare - he doesn't like putting too much time to it since he prefers being outside and being outside's his job anyway. He only writes using a pen he carries in his shirt pocket. He always wear his jacket without putting arms in sleeve, a habit he acquired from Kita because he thought it was cool. He always had female students doing errands for the men's volleyball team, such as going through lists, handing out drinks and preparing materials - they just want to complete community service hours, and working with Akagi-san is the best option.

He doesn't eat much - his to-go lunch is salad bought from a western restaurant down the road. However, he has a BUNCH of spices in his spice rackets at home that he inherited from his ma, some of which he doesn't know the name of and all of which he wondered when he is going to use.

He doesn't forget his high school team. In fact, he stays in Hyogo, as he had been doing his whole life, so meeting acquaintances happens everyday. And it's easier to meet up for high school reunion too. He thinks it's really important - team morale, unity and loyalty and all. He doesn't use his phone much, except to check for weather. He likes wearing black short shorts and a white tee, and a cheap but cool black leather jacket with a golden volleyball embroidered on it. He doesn't mind the sun. He owns a small kitchenette at home - that's enough for his needs. He's kinda bland at cooking tho, only blanched vegetables and fried rice. He would eat up anything tho, especially food by Kita since it's traditional Japanese food and rice-based. Rice is his favorite food he says, and he'll eat anything with it. Nothing can go wrong with traditional Japanese rice dishes for a warm fulfilling meal. He knows how to eat well, how to take care of himself, how to appreciate traditional foods and find flavor in it. Oh, and he also likes chicken. Any kind of chicken, really, he says. But KFC and fast food is his vice and guilty pleasure - ironic given he is a high school coach and PE teacher.

He has few to store on his computer tho - he doesn't do much with them. Except now and then he visits the internet. His school supplies are sometimes crappy, so he has to call students to fix the projector and computer because they're more tech savvy than him.

He lives in a small apartment condo by himself with one room, a wall-mounted table with stools looking at the balcony, a small kitchenette. His mom visits his place from time to time - he's her favorite son, and she insists on cooking for him no matter how much he refuses. She's stubborn, but a loving stay-at-home mom. He's the eldest in his family, and little siblings always visit him for weekly family reunions, where they all have to take care of their mom.

Wiggly: Chaos (I assume this due to his clear Cthulhu inspiration and also just watch Black Friday)

Pokey: Unity/Control (He likes hive minds and I feel this fits him)

Blinky: Observation (Probably a better word for this but just look at him)

Nibbly: Consumption or Destruction (He likes eating and eating usually involves destroying food)

The sole one I can’t decide on a single key idea they embody is Tinky and I come seeking aid from those wiser than me.
