SFW ALPHABET (Anakin Skywalker)

AUTHOR’S NOTE: ALRIGHTY ALRIGHTY PEOPLE!!!! So I decided to do two versions of this in one, I strongly believe that Anakin in the films is very different from the Anakin in the Clone Wars (BOTH HOT AF), so instead of doing two posts, I will put the Movies Anakin in the first pharagraph and the Clone Wars Anakin in the second (I’ll italicize it for you guys!!!) If there is only one paragraph, then that means that I believe Anakin from Movies and TV serious would be similar in that letter. Hope you guys enjoy!!!

Also I tried to keep this as nonbinary as I could, so I hope I don’t offend anyone!

Warning: Fluff, mentions of sex, nothing hardcore tho! : Maybe some spoilers if you haven’t seen Clone Wars.

A = Affection (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?)

Movies

Anakin is very affectionate. He’s always somewhere near you or even if he’s away, he’s always sending you little notes on your holopad saying how much he loves and appreciates you. He also loves to cuddle and hug you from behind, really to assert his dominance. Not that you mind though.

Clone Wars

He is very affectionate as well. He and you are normally attached at the hip when together. He loves to hold your hand or pepper your face with kisses. When he’s on missions, he always makes sure to bring back little tinkets from the mission for your collection on your shelf wall.

B = Best Friend (What would they be like? How would the friendship start?)

Movies

It wouldn’t be a really healthy relationship, more of a lean on the shoulder and cry type of relationship but nothing besides that. He or you would need to rant, and the other would be there to listen, but past just ranting, you guys probably wouldn’t hang out.

Clone Wars

He’s a very loyal friend, he is always there when needed and understands when you need space. You guys would also like to go and spar together or pull pranks on Obi-Wan or the clones. Ahsoka would be pulling the pranks aswell. Overall, you guys would probably have a healthy relationship.

C = Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?)

Both

He loves to cuddle! He loves the intimicacy of it without being sexual. He really likes to just go to your quarters after a mission and just lay down in your lap as you stroke your hands through his hair, lulling him to sleep.

Other nights, after those activities, he would be a very dominant cuddler, opting to pulling you close into his side or on top of him, to where he could wrap his arms around you completely.

D = Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?)

Both

As I said in commitment, it depends on you and what you want to do. He is all for settling down with you and maybe buying a small house or apartment after the war is over. With cooking and cleaning though, Anakin is great at cooking, but he does leave the cleaning to you, not that you mind tho, he makes a mean bantha stew.

E = Ending (If they had to breakup with their partner, how would they do it?)

Movies

You would end it, only because of his infatuation with Senator Amidala, who you very much envied because of the amount of attention she got from your boyfriend. He would mope around for days afterwards, only a couple rotations after would he bring you flowers on your door step, asking for you back.

Clone Wars

It was a rash decision really, it was after Obi-Wan had “died” and you were comforting Anakin as best as you could, but then he shoved you off of him, resulting in you crying, him screaming at you, and that was the end of that. You guys would probably get back together, but it definitely would’ve put a strain on your relationship as a whole.

F = Fiance (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married?)

Both

He is in different about commitment, it’s really about what you would want. If they want to get married, then he’ll propose (with a cute little plan), and if you didn’t want to get married, he’s ok with that too.

G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?)

Movies

He is very bipolar in mood. It really depends on the day he had. If he had a great day, then he is the best boyfriend ever, showering you with gifts and affection, showing you alot of attention, however if he had a bad day, he tends to block of anyone and everyone. Only a few people can get through to him, and even that’s rare. He becomes very antisocial and will ignore your presence until he is over whatever made him so upset.

Clone Wars

He is super gentle, if you two were in battle together, he would never be too harsh on you, and even if you get hurt, he is constantly checking on you every chance he got, sometimes sending Ahsoka or Rex to check on you if he couldn’t. Physically, he worships you, he would never purposely harm you, emotionally, he is always supportive of you.

H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are they like?)

Both

He loves hugs. His favorite is when he hugs you from behind, reminding you of how small you are compared to him. Your favorite hugs from him are his bear hugs where he squeezes you and spins you around. You love them. As for the frequency of them, he always gives you bear hugs after missions, other times, he just opts to bring you into his arms and place his chin on top of your head.

I = I love you (How fast do they say the L-Word?)

Movies

He doesn’t exactly say it, more along the lines that he and you were sparring and he thought it and you accidentally came across the thought. You questioned him about it, asking if he meant to let his quard down THAT low, or if he was stunned by your beauty. He blushed madly, but you just smiled at him and sent the thought back to him. It took him about 3 months.

Clone Wars

You were in the infirmary when he said it. He thought that you couldn’t hear it, but the soft grasping of his hand had let you know that you heard it and returned the feelings. You guys weren’t dating when he said it though, you were friends, but after you got out of the medbay, he asked you on a date to where he could properly say those three words.

J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?)

Movies

Jealousy is Anakin’s middle name. That man is always jealous of one thing or another, so needless to say, anytime you’re showing a bit of interest in a person, he would grab your hand and drag you somewhere to where he could assert his dominance over you (normally tongue is involved.)

Clone Wars

Anakin doesn’t get jealous often (compared to Movie Anakin), when he does though, he will glare at the person for a while until they run off. After they do, you would just look behind your shoulder and sigh, walking to him and kissing his cheek, saying that you’re his and only his.

K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?)

Movies

Rushed and sometimes harsh, however when he has time, he showers you with tender kisses all over your face. He is also quite fond of kissing your neck and collarbone, he loves to leave little hickeys on the base of your neck. As for where he likes to be kissed, he likes to be kissed on the top of his head when he’s laying down.

Clone Wars

Soft, they are generally little pecks here and there, but aside from that, his other kisses are passionate, literally sweeping you off your feet. He loves to kiss your lips, he loves how soft and warm they are. He also likes to be kissed anywhere really, he really relies on affection more often than not.

L = Little Ones (How are they arround children?)

Movies

Not the best at first. He thinks they’re annoying and is always complaining when he has to watch younglings train or help them with his saber techniques. But after a while, as he matured, he became more fond of them and would eventually want to talk to you about possibly having a baby together. After that, he is super good with them and always volunteers to watch over your baby when you have to do an errand.

Clone Wars

He’s great with kids, I mean he did have a padawan for a while. You and him have talked about having children after the war. He would want at least three, to which you are hesitant about, but when it came to your first pregnancy, he was over the mood, and the look on his face made you want to have all the kids he wants.

M = Mornings (How are mornings spent with them?)

Both

LAZY. He loves lazy mornings where you are both sprawled out on the bed. You generally wake up to see him looking down at you and running his hand through your hair, combing out various knots. He also loves taking showers with you, specifically when you wash his hair, he finds it really relaxing and helps loosen him up.

N = Nights (How are nights spent with them?)

Both

Every night is different. Most nights you guys are having fun in the sheets, other nights though, you and him lay side by side and have deep conversations or sometimes sit in silence while eating your favorite take out. He loves every night spent with you. When he has nightmares, you are always the first to wake him up and help comfort him until he goes back to sleep.

O = Open (When would they start revealing things about themselves?)

Movies

You had been friends with him ever since the both of you were padawans, so when he was younger, he normally couldn’t keep his mouth shut about little facts about himself. So the more you two grew up, the easier it was for him to talk to you about certain things.

Clone Wars

He began to open up to you after you almost died on a mission. One time you were in the infirmary, weak and bored out of your mind, so you asked him about himself and he began to tell you little things here and there. After you were out of medical care, you had become very well versed into the mind of Anakin Skywalker.

P = Patience (How easily angered are they?)

Movies

He has a temper that is well known. Sometimes, the smallest thing triggers him to where he sulks around all day, it doesn’t have to have you involved, but you do normally help by pulling him into an empty corridor and going down on him. ;)

Clone Wars

He has somewhat of a temper, but after a while, it got better to where it would take a lot to anger him. He would always calm down afterwards, normally after a sparring session or after some food.

Q = Quizzes (How much do they remember about you?)

Both

Everything. Although he acts like he doesn’t care, but once you got down past his hard exterior, you realized that he knew more about you than he let on.

R = Remember (What is their favorite moment in your relationship?)

Movies

After the Battle of Geonosis, he and you were assigned to take Senator Amidala back to Naboo. On Naboo, you and him went to the lake at night and played around in the water, kissing under the moonlight. Anytime you and him go anywhere where a lake is nearby, you guys make it a habit to take a swin under the moonlight.

Clone Wars

His favorite moment is when you and he were trapped in a cave for a couple of days without any backup. You two had to survive on what you had on you, but he loved the quiet time that he got with you, plus he made the perfect excuse to loose your clothes, “you can get better body heat when clothes are not in the way,” he would say as you rolled your eyes with a smiled and took off his clothes. In his diffense, he was just joking aroud with you, but boy does he love that memory.

S = Security ( How protective are they? How would they protect you? How would they like to be protected?)

Both

He is very, very protective of you, even though you insist that you can protect yourself. If someone tries to threaten you, he would normally go and beat the person up (if he could), if it was a droid, then he would obviously wreck the droid to tiny bits. He likes to be held at night, as much as he hates to admit it. But he feels really secure when your arms are wrapped around him.

T = Try (How much effort would they put into a date, anniversaries etc?)

Both

He always makes sure that he remembers important events, either by writing notes all over his room or having one of his clones (normally Rex) remember it. He puts alot of his time and thought into dates, normally bringing you a random gift and always making sure that you are happy. As for anniversaries, he goes over and beyond what he did the year before.

U = Ugly (What would be a bad habit of theirs?)

Movies

His fatuation of Padme. It pisses you off to no end when he hangs out with her and not you. Of course, you understand that they are friends, but the way he talks about her to you and to other people could suggest otherwise.

Clone Wars

Impulsivity. You can’t stand when he is constantly rushing into battle without a thoroughly planned plan. You think it’s annoying and often give him the “I told you so” when he’s the infirmary, after you’ve of course held onto him for dear life. He calls you Obi-Two because of how alike you and Obi-Wan are in getting angry at him.

V = Vanity (How concerned are they with their looks?)

Movies

On a scale 1-10, he is definitely a solid 9/10 concerned with his looks. It really doesn’t help bring down his ego when girls all over the galaxy practically throw themselves at his feet, to which he loves and you hate, but secretly think that it is funny.

Clone Wars

He was concerned with his looks, but as he got more missions, he really didn’t care what he looked like, he was always focused on the mission at hand.

W = Whole (Would they feel incomplete without you?)

Movies

YES! Anakin is super clingy and sulks around alot when you’re not with him. If you were to have died, it would wreck him and further lead him to the dark side, no matter how much Obi-Wan or Padme could console him. Palpatine would only help in his descent, claiming that the war took her and that he (Anakin) could stop it if he gave into his powers.

Clone Wars

Yes. He is always worried about you and if something had happened to you, it would destroy him, much like Obi-Wan’s death. The “hero with no fear” wouldn’t be the same if you had died, and Ahsoka would suffer from it due to her Master’s lack of motivation.

X = Xtra (A random headcanon for them?)

Both

He uses your shampoo, how else do you think he got those lushious locks? It started when his hair started growing out after his padawan haircut and he took a shower in your quarters, ever since then, he’s been hooked on your shampoo.

Y = Yuck (What are some things they wouldn’t like, either in general or in partner?)

Movies

Some of the food you eat. He thinks that some of the things that you make up from scratch are nasty, and he normally throws whatever he couldn’t stomach in the trash, much to your dismay. This would normally result in you punching him and him apologizing but laughing at how cute you are flustered.

Clone Wars

He hates slave traders with a passion. Once he told you that he had to pretend to be a slave trader, you stormed into the Council’s meeting and told them off. Yes, you got in trouble, but how dare they do that to him of all people. After he heard what you did, he pulled you aside and just hugged you and told you that he will be ok, although he still hates them no matter what.

Z = Zzz (What is a sleep habit of theirs?)

Both

He is a very, very heavy sleeper. In accordance to him, if you wake him, it either be for one of three things; sex, food, or mission. All three of which would make him wake up immediately, but anything other than that, good luck getting him out of bed.

JAUNTS THROUGH HISTORY/CANON

1. Paperwork – Mirach (T, the one where Aziraphale is filling out forms for a new corporation and is idly flashing back to the reasons for his discorporation. It has a lot to do with Crowley. This one is so sweet and heartfelt, and also has a surprise at the end that gave me a good chuckle.)

2. A Dozen Red Roses for My Darling – @raiining (G, the one where Crowley finds himself in a bit of a pickle while doing a miracle for Aziraphale. This one has the funniest summary and I don’t even know why it’s so funny to me. It’s even better that it’s a Regency story, and the underlying tension between Crowley and Aziraphale is so good. Simple and sweet.)

3. When the lights go out (run away with me) – strawberriesandtophats (T, the one where Nanny Ashtoreth and Brother Francis skip out for the night. Has a gorgeous little rendezvous between the two of them, and a wonderful second chapter where they find Warlock again. Entirely too beautiful. All the emotions.)

4. older now, and the light is dim – WISHBONE (NR, the one where Aziraphale walks in on Crowley holding baby Warlock and both he and my heart go entirely to pieces. Based on that one gingerhaole fanart, it captures the quiet tenderness of the art perfectly, and then beyond—Crowley goes a little protective at one point and then Aziraphale is introspective and it’s GOOD.)

5. It begins, as it will end, in a garden – @tenoko1 (G, the one where it’s the cold open but with a recurring theme of flowers woven in. This one has fluctuating gender presentations and Crowley and Aziraphale discorporating each other and one utterly perfect moment where Aziraphale tries to kill Crowley and can’t make herself do it, and it is all Too Soft and Too Beautiful for words.)

6. A House in the Country – @theoldaquarian (T, the one where Crowley and Aziraphale take a vacation in an abandoned house in the Lake District for a summer. It’s beautiful and there’s pining and there might be thirty-six rooms in this place but it’s nicer to spend time together, dangit. Understated and quiet and perfect.)

7. The Gospel of Crowley – gutterandthestars (T, the one where Crowley gets on with tempting Christ and in true Crowley fashion it backfires on him. Jesus has the BEST characterization, he and Crowley have wonderful banter, and the whole thing is poignant and hilarious. Loved it from start to finish.)

8. build me a city, call it jerusalem – @gyzym (T, the one where Crowley considers Right and Wrong. Book-verse. Jumps around in history and is one of those really esoteric, artistic pieces that makes you stop and think about what you just read. Absolutely gorgeous.)

9. Solitarius – @popcornpowergoddess (G, the one where Crowley blesses an old cottage and is sad. This one blew my mind when I read the author is fifteen, because WOW they are going places if they’re already this good. The work is heartbreaking and a little funny and so, so visually appealing. A real treat for the brain.)

10. Sawdust of Words – @aethelflaedladyofmercia (G and T, the series where Crowley and Aziraphale’s relationship and the Ineffable Plan get looked at from another angle. This series is already gonna rip me to pieces—Early Days had the most gorgeous and DIFFERENT storyline for Aziraphale post-Adam and Eve getting cast out, and it has him and Crowley actually arguing and being contentious at first in their relationship, it’s so good, especially when they start to try and work it out. Obedience hurt me in ways I did not ask for. The stories jump around in the timeline and it’s all so GOOD, I’m READY for more!)

11. An Angel who did not so much Fall In Love as Settle Into It Gradually – @theladyzephyr (G, the one where it’s exactly what it says on the tin. Jumps through history and has precious tender moments and less-than-tender moments all jumbled up in there, you can really feel with Aziraphale where he starts to lose the fight against his feelings. Just fantastic.)

12. Inauspicious (But Not Impossible) – @thetunewillcome (M, the one where there’s a kiss in 1945 and immediate consequences, and Aziraphale contemplates Romeo and Juliet. IMO doesn’t deserve the M rating, the kissing and the snogging are both pretty innocuous. The pining is real and delicious and painful, and the ways Heaven and Hell choose to remind their agents of what happens to traitors is Awful. Nothing gory, just sad. But it ends so much happier.)

13. and you can say that my hair’s a disgrace – @phoenix-soar (T, the one that’s an ode to Crowley’s hair throughout the years, and excuses for Aziraphale to touch it. Intimate, romantic, intensely emotional, just a real treat of a fic. Aziraphale loves Crowley and his hair so much.)

14. As Yearning Lips to Unyielding Stone – SanSanFanFan (G, the one where Crowley gets maudlin over a statue that looks like Aziraphale. Oh my gosh, you guys. You guys, the PINING. The YEARNING. The LONGING. It’s exquisite and painful and a work of art in and of itself. I have a soft spot for period fics, especially Italian Renaissance, for some reason, and THIS is one of the best.)

15. What’s Done In the Dark – @charmingpplincardigans (T, the one where Crowley literally glows with love and HOLY CRAP ON A STICK, Y’ALL, this one is an epic. It’s as much a story about growth as it is about love, and it’s so, so satisfying to watch Crowley go through this journey. I don’t have the words, just know that it’s one of those fics you can’t pass up. A+++++++)

16. Hot Days, Mad Blood – noodlefrog (T, the one where Aziraphale teaches Crowley how to duel, or he will in future chapters. This is a brand-spanking-new one that is gonna be so much fun to watch update. Italian Renaissance! Swordplay! Crowley being a smitten idiot! Aziraphale being competent! It’s gonna be so good y’all.)

SOUTH DOWNS

17. make your good love known to me (or just tell me about your day) – Sky_Stars_Sea (G, the one where Crowley is adjusting to living with Aziraphale. Has a beautiful sensory experience running throughout, and Crowley being so vulnerable it physically hurts. Beautiful, beautiful story.)

18. The Cottage at the End of the Lane – Angelina_Aintithenniel (T, the series where Crowley and Aziraphale have to defend what’s theirs. I have never screamed at my computer so much while reading a fic series, mostly along the lines of “LEAVE THEM AND THEIR HOUSE ALONE,” because this series is the Madoka Magica of fics: cute and fluffy casing, unexpectedly wild, angsty, action-packed innards. I adore this whole series. It makes me FEEL things.)

19. in my darkness I remember – @anthxnyjcrxwley (T, the one where it’s a soft, quiet night in the South Downs. A straight shot of fluff right to the heart, friendos, nothing more, nothing less. Stuff a mattress with this fic and say goodbye to any and all worldy pains.)

20. there’s no kingdom to come – killingthemoon (T, the one where Crowley slips off to fix up the cottage before springing it on Aziraphale. Tender, sweet, has a gorgeous ending scene that’s lots of fun and lots of shouting at the sky.)

21. A Heaven More Like This – miladyshakespeare (T, the one where it’s a Welsh cottage this time, cycling through a year. Such a beautiful piece of longing and uncertainty as Crowley and Aziraphale circle each other, a lot of quiet themes about letting yourself be cared for and letting yourself care, and also there’s a cat.)

22. The Legend of Devil’s Dyke – @sameoldsorceress (M, the one that’s a retelling of a popular South Downs local legend. Not sure at all why this one is rated M but it might be the gratuitous use of the word “cocks”, though in context it’s not filthy at all. This one is FUN, y’all, and I agree with the sentiment of the Tumblr post that inspired the fic, there need to be more fics featuring local South Downs legends.)

POST-APOCALYPSE

23. Slow – @theirdarkreturning (T, the one where the Antichrist makes some assumptions when he puts the world back together. Scores points for being very Jewish and playing right into the classic nigh-Shakespearean trope of miscommunication. Hilarious and sweet also the one where God signs the marriage certificate.)

24. Binary Stars – samael_the_scrivener (T, the one where Crowley has an emotional breakdown and Aziraphale does his best to make it right. Heavily emotional and angsty, nearly had me in tears right along with Crowley, and Aziraphale’s portion doesn’t back down from the tone, they have to fight tooth and nail through the emotional blockage to get to understanding and it’s positively sublime.)

25. If We’ve Got Nothing (We’ve Got Us) – @kedreeva (G, the one where everyone ends up where they’re meant to be. A gorgeous story about found family and working through differences and—eventually—God’s Ineffable Plan possibly coming to full fruition. I don’t wanna spoil too much, it’s best experienced blind.)

26. The Ludicrous and Many Disasters of Mister A.Z. Fell, Houseplant – @souljellied (T, the one where it is also exactly what it says on the tin and is exactly as ridiculous as you’d hope. With an unexpected but not unwelcome dash of angst, to boot. Crowley doesn’t take too well to being unable to immediately find Aziraphale, after all. Aziraphale is mostly wondering how to get out of this mess.)

27. In the (Second) Beginning – cherryfeather (M, the one where they have an inevitable conversation after the Ritz. Doesn’t really need the M rating since the smooching is intense but not graphic, and has the single greatest scene of Aziraphale reminding Crowley he’s a sensualist of ALL TIME. Fabulous work, very formative for me tbh.)

28. all I need, darling, is a life in your shape – @mortuarybees (G, the one where Aziraphale and Crowley need some convincing in the form of their well-meaning friends putting them in a room with one bed. The pining is delicious and piping hot, friends, and then suddenly oh my GoSatSomebody, they were roommates. A great little number with a beautiful confession scene.)

29. corrections – @0nelater (T, the one where Crowley is having a slow, melting come-apart about his feelings. Lots of Crowley being, in his own words, a basket case, and having a fundamental misunderstanding of how angels sensing love works, and how those two concepts are resolved. Has beautiful color symbolism and fun meta throughout.)

30. dearly beloved – @dissatisfied-starlight (T, the one where Crowley and Aziraphale get married, despite the universe’s best efforts, it seems. Hilarious and sweet and surprising! Not to spoil anything, but also has the best Beelzebub characterization as a nice little cherry on top.)

31. A Buried and Burning Flame – Lissomedi (G, the one where Crowley and Aziraphale visit an art museum and happen upon a disturbingly accurate and intimate depiction of themselves. Lots of Crowley pining and then being miserable, lots of Aziraphale being confused and then exasperated. So cute and sweet.)

32. The Long Game – sir_not_appearing_in_this_archive (G, the one that’s an adventure romp with proper twists and pining and saving the world. I love the spirit of this one, and the various inconveniences the cast have to overcome to stay out of Heaven and Hell’s radar. The building action right before the climax of the plot is heart-stopping, and the resolution is suitably satisfying. Was a fun way to spend a late night, for sure.)

33. in which labels are finnicky things – REVVIII (T, the one where Aziraphale is trying to figure out the perimeters of their relationship post-Apocalypse. He tries so hard, does his research, but honestly, nothing is gonna do it like talking to Crowley about it openly, which is, of course, not his first course of action. Very cute, especially when he’s trying to suss out what friends with benefits are.)

BUS RIDE/NIGHT BEFORE/HEAVEN AND HELL

34. if you wanna be alone, come with me – mygalfriday (G, the one where they can’t even make it into Crowley’s flat before it all comes spilling out. Short and sweet shot of fluff, just a perfect little sip of serotonin.)

35. The Things We Did and Didn’t Do – @dietraumerei (G, the one where they finally get their act together and defeat Heaven and Hell with the power of LOVE. Such tender, very emotion. Wow.)

36. Too Generous – rfsmiley (T, the one where That One Line, you know the one, from Pride and Prejudice serves as the inspiration. There’s some sneaky shirt-opening and it’s both hot and kinda funny. The very definition of “enthusiastic consent.”)

37. Exit Interview – Pygmy Puff (G, the one where Crowley has to survive a round of paperwork in order to get out of Heaven in Aziraphale’s body. This one went in a completely unexpected direction. I was ready for a humorous romp through Heaven’s bureaucracy. I got so much more than I was bargaining for. Read it, it’s ridiculous in all the best ways and surprisingly dangerous.)

AU/UA

38. An Honest Surrender – @kedreeva (T, the one where their plan to fool Heaven and Hell is a little different. Y’all might already know this one as the Angel Marriage fic, but for those who don’t, imagine “marriage” as we know it and then throw that concept out the window, because what happens is too weird and beautiful for words. My words, anyway.)

39. Mr. Fell – @amarguerite (T, the one that’s a reverse AU where Aziraphale is a Victorian dandy frat boy party-thrower who used to date Satan and talks about it constantly, and Crowley is Heaven’s perfect little soldier and all the PTSD that comes with. Tons of heart and originality already, though it’s still early in the fic, and a truly special dynamic between Aziraphale and Crowley. Also Aziraphale accidentally causes Original Sin by inventing brunch and if that doesn’t get you to read, nothing will.)

40. Keep Getting Stranger (I Do) – @callipygiangoldfish (T, the one that’s a Howl’s Moving Castle AU, patterned more after the book than the movie. It’s a wonderful little adventure about accepting yourself and the side-dish of falling in love is SCRUMPTIOUS.)

41. By the Light of My Stars – @theladydrgn (T, the one where Crowley was Raphael and in love with Aziraphale and that bit doesn’t change, at least. Has probably my favorite tag used in any fic ever of all time, I’ll see if you can spot it. Protective Crowley for MILES and MILES in this one, what he does to a demon that threatens Aziraphale is pure poetry. Going in a promising direction for sure!)

42. flammam gladii hinc – @wildenessat221b (G, the series where Crowley was Raphael and wiped Aziraphale’s memory to protect him. Has the BEST backstory for the flaming sword, of all things, and a bittersweet story throughout. Told in terms of [redacted] so it’s got a bit of mystery to it but not much. Somehow that makes it sadder.)

43. Bring Out Your Dead – metallic_sweet (T, the one where Crowley is Raphael and a healer no matter what Heaven tries to get him to do. A reverse AU where Aziraphale is a shark, of all things, and a warrior with a supernaturally bad sense of direction trying his best. It’s a refreshing change of pace in both reverse AUs and Raphael AUs; Crowley is still gruff and Aziraphale is still sweet and it’s perfect.)

44. Something to do with these sacred words – @thehumantrampoline (T, the one where Crowley confesses early and often. It’s both lovely and sad, in a way, for Crowley to be so open about his feelings so much without Aziraphale doing much about it besides panic internally, but the ending is sweet, very much so.)

45. reckless and wild and stricken – @weatheredlaw (T, the one where Armageddon happens again and this time it’s a true post-apocalyptic nightmare scenario. Weatheredlaw is famous for having fics that just tear at the heartstrings, and this one’s no different. It’s tender and it’s sad and it’s desperate and it HAUNTS ME.)

46. A price to pay – @aerococonut (T, the one where performing miracles costs Crowley something. A lovely look at the technicalities of Crowley—and Aziraphale, mind—doing something they aren’t made for, and the ways it changes them. Fans of fics about chronic pain, this is the one.)

47. Soulmates – GoodandIneffable (G, the one where your lies put marks on your soulmate’s body, and Aziraphale and Crowley are soulmates. This is one I wish had at least a 3k-word expansion, because the concept is gorgeous and Crowley’s realization at what it truly means to be Aziraphale’s soulmate is staggering. Short, but worth it.)

48. i love(d) you – extraordinarilyextreme (G, the one that’s a Star Wars AU and it WRECKED ME. Force-bonds, love, betrayal, forgiveness, AUGH. It’s too much. I love it. Also Padawans Warlock and Adam ftw.)

49. The Book of Aziraphale – @gigglesnortbangdead (T, the one where Aziraphale wrote poetry he never intended to make public, and naturally it goes public. This had the potential to be silly or sweet and wound up directly in poignant instead; Aziraphale takes a decidedly self-loathing approach with a lot of his poetry and it’s amazing to watch him work through his feelings about himself and about Crowley.)

50. Of Celestial Sonnets and Pitiable Poets – trieduntrue (T, the one where Crowley wrote poetry he never intended to make public and then Hell finds it. So naturally, to save his skin, he has it printed and distributed under the guise of “spreading sin.” Then he writes and publishes a second one completely drunk. This one is pure silliness and Crowley schadenfreude; it really plays up the beloved device of “everything Crowley does backfires on him somehow” in the most lighthearted way.)

51. The Healer and the Lover – Nnm (T and G, the series where Aziraphale’s name means “of Raphael” and that’s who Crowley used to be, and there’s a lot of complicated feelings involved. Really emotionally complex and interesting take on the Raphael AU, one I’ve come back to a lot because it’s so compelling.)

52. Tracing The Stars On Your Skin – PunJedi (T, the one where Crowley’s freckles used to be stars. Achingly sweet and sad, goes through each constellation Crowley made and has a story for it. The end is just gorgeous, really emotional and sweet.)

53. On the Matter of Touch – @somedrunkpirate (T, the one where Aziraphale is flooded with the emotions of the ones he touches, and Crowley is a touch-starved lovesick sad sap. Incredibly tender and emotional, lots about boundaries and communication and the Mortifying Ordeal of letting yourself care and be cared for.)

SOFT

54. keep me close – @saints-and-demons-preserve-us (G, the one where Aziraphale accidentally discovers that Crowley does local theatre. It’s so funny and sweet and full of longing and excellent Broadway tunes, and also Aziraphale is The Most Awkward and it’s gratifying af.)

55. i keep a window for you (it’s always open) – @campgender (T, the one where they quote Romeo and Juliet a lot. It’s beautiful and romantic and Shakespeare always deserves appreciation. The lines that are picked out are especially gorgeous in the context of the fic.)

I’m new here so I don’t quite understand the Gomens fandom’s immortal love of Richard Siken, but I can darn well appreciate good poetry, especially when it’s couched in tender touches and overwhelming feels.)

57. Fools in Love – @theres-a-goldensky (T and M, the series where this is absolutely true. The first is a frankly hilarious jaunt at Aziraphale trying different hobbies and dragging Crowley into them, the second is Aziraphale not realizing he’s projecting his own longing for Crowley onto everyone around him and then getting jealous of his own warped perceptions. M rating is more for lascivious intent and verbiage than actual smut, and what an intent it is XD)

58. To Trust in One Another – bluespring864 (T, the one where Aziraphale is haunted by something insensitive he once said to Crowley. Do you enjoy pining that builds until it breaks every dam in the universe? Do you enjoy self-flagellating for something dumb you said once? Welcome to paradise, friends, a sweet, adorable paradise.)

61. Birds of a Feather – @idiopathicsmile (T, the one where Aziraphale is nesting and Crowley doesn’t get it. Another one of those classic miscommunication fics where everything is awful until they finally get on the same page, and then it’s wonderful. Also the thought of Aziraphale in particular feathering his nest with things he and Crowley both like is the sweetest mental image of all time.)

62. Just Hold On Tight – @books-n-bentleys (G, the one where communication is key to every relationship. Love languages are a thing and making sure you and your partner come to an understanding about them is important; see this fic for why this is a really good idea. Because every relationship deserves tenderness and understanding and the correct level of schmoop.)

63. Braving Those Angry Skies – ladymerlot (T, the one where Crowley nearly kills himself saving Aziraphale from Nazis. Crowley is so perfectly in character throughout it’s almost funny even when it isn’t (maybe especially when it isn’t). A prime example of my favorite Gomens fic trope to date. I know I don’t have a lot of variance in my adjectives but you guys TENDER. ROMANTIC. SWEET. IT’S ALL OF THEM.)

64. Moral Arguments – WhiteQueenWrites (T, the one where Crowley and the gang help a woman get revenge on her truly horrible ex. This one is FUN, there’s no other way to say it. It’s cathartic and satisfying and is one of those fics I wish was a cheesy movie I could watch while eating disgusting amounts of popcorn.)

65. get religion quick (cause you’re looking divine) – @brinnanza (G, the one where Aziraphale is convinced Crowley doesn’t love him back and it’s fine. Cute and emotional and must absolutely be read with its counterpart below. This one first, that’s why it’s listed first; they aren’t related in the way that they’re the same scene from different perspectives, they’re just similar situations with the roles swapped, and it’s so worth reading, these idiots I swear 2 Someone.)

66. you play with my feelings (right from the start) – @penrosesun (G, the one where Crowley is convinced Aziraphale doesn’t love him back and it’s fine. Hilarious and emotional and must absolutely be read with its counterpart above. Really illustrates how two smart people can completely miss the point for THOUSANDS OF YEARS.)

67. Worth Any Price – @sameoldsorceress (T, the one where Crowley sets up a kissing booth. You guys I was ready for fun shenanigans involving Crowley kissing the general public and maybe Aziraphale getting a little bothered under the collar. I was not expecting the FEELS. The PLOT. The UNEXPECTED PUNCH TO THE GUT. Absolutely an underrated treasure in this fandom, needs to be talked of often.)

68. Bodies of Change – @dietraumerei (G, the one where Aziraphale has new clothes. This one plays right into my Fashion itch and it’s wonderful and body-positive and so, so sweet. Crowley is so smitten with his angel.)

69. i did not know ‘twas love i gave – miribees (T, the one where Aziraphale makes Crowley a mixtape. This one is unexpectedly bittersweet and tender, with Crowley and Aziraphale in a fight for a good chunk of the fic, but it’s the apology and the making up that’s sweetest, of course.)

70. World Cold, Aziraphale Warm – maddiemaynot (NR, the one where Crowley is trying his best, okay. It’s unbearably romantic how much they love each other, how they slide into soft intimacy in fits and starts. Also has quite possibly the most disastrous date in history, but it’s the thought that counts.)

71. Fractured Heart – @asparklethatisblue (T, the one that’s gonna murder me with Aziraphale’s feels. The premise is that angels can be physically broken by strong emotion, and what’s stronger than the grief of losing a loved one to the Rebellion? Also dealing with Aziraphale’s feelings for Crowley getting tangled up in his feelings for his lost heavenly love, and it’s DELICIOUS.)

72. ask, and ye shall receive – @ariaste (G, the one where Crawly gets exactly what he’s asking for. Very much has the feel of my something-great grandpa, who once told a man “Go ahead, shoot me!” and was obliged. Hilarious and sweet, you can FEEL God’s smugness throughout the entire fic.)

73. what wound did ever heal – HallsofStone2941 (M, the one where Aziraphale is wounded in the War in Heaven and carries it with him. Rated M for one line involving sexytimes that truly isn’t that bad at all. Aziraphale is just so good and brave and Aziraphale about it all, A+++ characterization.)

74. Falling – @differentjasper (T, the one where the War in Heaven changed a lot of things. Read this if you want to picture little baby angel Aziraphale and Crowley and then get EMOTIONALLY WRECKED about them. I kinda wanted to rip my own heart out just to stop it from hurting so much while reading it.)

80. I Love My Lover With A-- – DictionaryWrites2 (T, the one where Crowley and Aziraphale have a game that involves kissing and adjectives. Book-verse, one of those curious fics where you’re both drowning in feels and learning something. Sensual in all the best ways and so achingly loving.)

81. Untouched – @etaleah (T, the one that RIPPED MY HEART FROM MY CHEST WITHIN THE FIRST COUPLE HUNDRED WORDS OR LESS. And then CONTINUED TO PUMMEL ME INTO THE GROUND FOR THREE THOUSAND WORDS. Crowley is so painfully touch-starved it kicked my own touch-starvedness into overdrive. Will take your emotions and leave them bleeding and broken before carefully bandaging them up and giving them a snuggle.)

Was not at ALL expecting the ending, it’s delicious and vindictive.)

Aziraphale’s entire emotional journey through this fic is so heartbreaking. But the conclusion is the exact counterbalance of healing and sweetness needed. Also Heaven is full of dicks but we knew that (except Aziraphale didn’t but that’s the point of this fic, now go read it).)

93. the wonder that keeps the stars apart – Nilmiel (G, the one where, fourteen hours after he gets the holy water, Crowley immediately has an Incident. Painful and emotional and intensely sweet. The second chapter has the best closure, even though it happens post-Armageddon’t.)

94. goodnight sweet prince (and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest) – @xoxoemynn (T, the one where Crowley needs a nap. Told throughout like a bedtime story in between the narrative and it’s such a charming effect, watching Crowley succumb to his exhaustion and Aziraphale take care of him.)

95. Fragments of Life – TheGirlWithBrightEyes (G, T, M, the series where Crowley has PTSD and anxiety, and Aziraphale adjusts. This series is a heartbreaking one and doesn’t shy away from the ugly parts of neurodivergence, but as much pain as there is, there is an equal and even greater amount of comfort and positive reinforcement. The single M is for a fic that toes the line of smut but doesn’t actually go over. Feels as cathartic as a good long cry.)

96. A Choiceless Hope In Grief – @thealphaaxolotl (NR, the one inspired by Orpheus and Eurydice. Featuring Crowley trapped in Tartarus and Aziraphale being more determined than Heaven and Hell combined to save him. One of those stories that drags you through the dark but doesn’t leave you there—at least, not alone, not without comfort.)

97. November Rain – FeatherBlack (T, the one where Crowley has a very bad time dealing with his emotions and Aziraphale is very bad at communicating. Visceral and emotional and raw and difficult to read at times with how miserable everyone is, but it does get better. It does definitely get better.)

98. Within These Walls – Elvendork (G and T, the series that you think is gonna be a fluffy “Greatest Showman” song-inspired jaunt but then comes out of left field with a sucker punch straight to the throat. Touching and thrilling and who invited Gabriel and Sandalphon, because I sure didn’t.)

There is no word “subfluence,” or only barely one. This started with the self-written biographical note of poet Jack Hirschman, in A Caterpillar Anthology (Clayton Eshleman, ed., 1971) —

“They are lyrical poems, in verse or free-form, as distinguished from the poems in this anthology, which are breath forms reflecting a more total slavery to the conditions of the spirit’s war-torn years. The major influences on my works are influence itself, in as many levels of order, disorder, disaster, paranoia, joy and ecstasy as the deathless magic of being alive permits a vessel now of fire, now of air, to spark, glow, flame and ember according to the law of nature.”

“Influence” — that word — led to thinking about variations, e.g., effluence, outfluence, pre-fluence... “subfluence” — an underground stream a less-than fluency (stammering, stuttering) a brittleness?

Little — or nothing — surfaced in a google books search, save for errors — typically a “sub” at the end of one line, a “fluence” at the start of the next (in a different column). Quite enough for present purposes. And so these subfluence derivations are built around a word that isn’t quite a word. Some license has been taken with the text in this post: dispensing ellipsis or [brackets] where text is erased (or rather, dropped); in some instances, some words that preceded the subfluence, are moved to follow it.

And yet, the word does appear, in some (and only a few) geological texts, typically having to do with the geotectonic unterströmungshypothese (undercurrent) concepts — and field work done in the Northern Calcareous Alps — of and by Otto Ampferer (1875-1947). More on Ampferer to come. For now, these references —

summer waxes poetically about her favorite aeris gainsborough ships:

i never reblogged that five ships meme because...well i don’t have five aeris ships i care about lol. however, i was challenged(tm) so here is something close to it. i do feel like it is fitting to make this post on here since aeris was actually the first muse i truly started writing a ship on after asking someone first ( and i had been writing on tumblr for like...5 years on and off before that for context. anything before that was just..maybe flirting - nothing i felt invested in ).

aeris & happiness.

the most important ship. the OTP. no other can compare. i think the biggest tragedy of aeris’ death is that so much was taken from her. she had so much to live for, so much to do, and her life was brutally and suddenly ripped away when she was finally getting the chance to figure herself out and rise to her full potential. i don’t want to aeris to die in the remake ( especially because everything about the whispers would’ve felt like a waste of time if nothing significant changes and aeris living is probably as significant as you can get ) but if it happens, it happens - i’ll just be really sad and disappointed by it lol. i’ve always been very clear that aeris’ death is not a bad one despite my blog canon essentially retconning it. there’s a reason she dies and it’s not to further cloud’s man pain ( he had enough of his own trauma already ); she dies because she’s a legitimate threat to sephiroth’s plans. she’s actually an example of a character death, especially a female one, done incredibly well, especially compared to SE’s recent output ( serah, luna, etc. ). also anyone who says she was created just to die is also wrong. barret was originally written to die first and they decided to change it.

anyway, the point of me bringing all of this up is that i didn’t decide to do away with her death because i think SE sucks and they hate women. i did away with it because a lot of aeris’ character development ( her learning about the cetra at cosmo canyon, figuring out what the white materia does, etc ) is implied / off-screen since we never know her point of view and then well...she dies. i wanted to explore what her feelings would be if she woke up alive after being attacked while meteor is slowly drawing closer to the planet. how would she handle that? how would she feel? would she feel like a failure? would she be angry? what would she do after meteor is destroyed? would she travel the world? join the w.r.o? tell everyone to fuck off and then move to a cottage in the middle of nowhere and live the rest of her life in peace? these are the questions i wanted answered when i thought about aeris living. i don’t care if she ends up with cloud, or zack, or whoever because they don’t matter: aeris matters. she’s her own person with goals, desires, wishes, and more. no one talks about what she would want and do if she had lived. all people care about is what ‘man’ she belongs to as if she’s a prize to be exchanged between them.

the second reason is simple that she fucking deserves it. she deserves it after living in a lab for 7 years and watching her mother die just trying to get her out. she deserves after having to deal with being stalked by the same company responsible for a lot of her suffering. she deserves to finally be around friends that make her feel loved, accepted, and cared for. she deserves to not feel alone, or like an outcast, or a freak because of her powers. she deserves to be able to go to icicle inn too and see footage of her father for the first time. she deserves to be able to go back to kalm and see her mom again. she deserves to live happily just like everyone else gets to do. her life has been filled with so much tragedy and pain yet she never lets it define her. she blooms in the face of adversity. she keeps smiling even up until the end of her life. she deserves happiness as her end-game and if i don’t get it in canon, i’m going to create it here myself.

aeris & cloud.

i disliked this ship for a long time. it actually wasn’t because of the ship itself but due to some of my experiences with the shippers. i won’t go into my fandom experiences but i ran an account dedicated to ti.fa for almost six years so i’ve seen how...unpretty both sides of the 'ship war’ can get and it turned me off. a lot. when i decided to write aeris, i immediately started a replay of the the original game with an ‘aeris-lens’ ( analyzing her character, her relationships, making sure i got her date, etc. ). it made me look at her relationship with cloud in a different light since i had never really paid attention to it as heavily before since i avoided the ship tbh. i ended up enjoying their dynamic a lot. they have a natural chemistry with each other but there’s also this unspoken distance between them which is fully intentional - she has her own walls up and he has his.

they have a very ‘tragic love’ since well...she dies before anything can fully go to the next level. their relationship in canon is a very ‘what if’ and as a result, i often see people who don’t like the ship claim that they wouldn’t work because aeris wouldn’t be able to ‘deal’ with cloud and would’ve left. to be blunt, this a bad take considering supporting one another is prevalent throughout their relationship:

aeris: i learned a lot. the elders taught me many things. about the cetra... and the promised land... i'm...... alone... i'm all alone now... cloud: but i'm...... we're here for you, right? aeris: i know. i know, but... i am the only...... cetra. cloud: does that mean we can't help?

cloud: ...i gave the black materia to sephiroth...? wha... what did I do... tell me, aeris. aeris: cloud... be strong, ok? He writhes and clutches his head. cloud urrrrrrgh... what have I done!? aeris: cloud... you haven't done anything. it's not your fault.

cloud: yeah, I hear you. sorry for what happened. aeris: don't worry about it. cloud: ...i can't help it... aeris: oh... then, why don't you REALLY worry about it? and let me handle sephiroth. and cloud, you take care of yourself. so you don't have a breakdown, okay?

the remake only reinforces everything i like about their relationship: their banter is great, aeris gently takes his hand during one of his ‘moments’ and supports him, she confides in him about talking to her flowers, and he never treats her differently ( which is a big deal when just two nights before, he told someone to ‘get help’ when they claimed they could hear the planet lol ). they have so much in common as well: they both have struggled with loneliness, being an outcast, and not having a lot of friends. i’ll always find it incredibly interesting how cloud is repeatedly not invited to be apart of group functions in the remake ( he wasn’t allowed to celebrate with avalanche and had to sit outside jessie’s house as the others ate pizza ) until he met aeris and she invited him to have dinner with her and her mom. despite the ‘bodyguard’ dynamic to their relationship, they always feel like equals to me.

aeris: today’s special!!! cloud: why? aeris: because i met you, you dumb binch!!!

aeris: *says cryptic stuff and tells him that they can’t fall in love* ( i’m saying they because apparently in japanese / other languages she says ‘we can’t fall in love’, not just ‘you can’t fall in love with me’. ) cloud: uh....how about i do anyway??? also i’m saving you so...see you tomorrow at 11. bye.

me: their relationship never gets to a serious level because the opportunity was taken away from them de to unfortunate circumstances.

also me: they’re just just...dumb and in love!!!! i’m sorry, that’s just the way it is!!!! she literally tells him that meeting him again was special to her and the silly boi doesn’t get it!!!! one of the composers of the game even said a tracks that plays with them is meant to have a romantic vibe!! when she pulls away from him, he reaches out for her because he doesn’t want her to let go!! the lyrics of hollow is literally ‘this time i’ll never LET YOU GO’ AAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!

anyway, i’ve also noticed this weird trend in the fandom where it feels like cloud is never allowed to just has his own dedicated feelings about aeris - and i’m not even talking about romantic feelings. i feel like whenever there is talk about cloud’s relationship with za.ck or ti.fa, no one inserts aeris into it. they’re allowed to have their individual relationships with him yet with aeris it feels like you cannot talk about how much she meant to him and vice versa without other characters being thrown in. i don’t know if it’s because of shipping and people don’t want to acknowledge that like...characters can have feelings for multiple people or what but the reality is that cloud did feel something for her. she did mean a lot to him; so much so that he slept in her church two years after she was dead and went to her burial place alone. he missed her. maybe it was just as a friend, maybe it was because of something more but i really dislike how their relationship and importance to each other, regardless of whether it’s platonic or romantic, is constantly invalidated.

aeris & gene.

when kas / @castershot first created channels for gene and aeris in our rp server last year, i honestly did not think these two would have a serious relationship at all. i figured maybe they would have a fling or something at best / aeris would be the equivalent of a filler character in a few episodes of the show and then they would go their separate ways. ...that didn’t happen but i’m glad it didn’t! i didn’t know a gosh diddly darn thing about outlaw star but i’m very good at researching and aggressively reading wikis so i was able to whip up a verse ( and someone who watched the show thought i had actually watched it after reading my verse so i guess i did a darn good job! ). anyway, i feel like when writing aeris it’s very easy to...hmm...fall into very certain dynamics and considering gene’s line of work ( doing odd jobs, being a bodyguard for hire, a general jack of all trades ), i didn’t want it to be the ‘he’s a bodyguard, she gets protected, blah blah blah’ dynamic but in space. so their relationship ( at least in my head - there’s a lot going on in there tbh!!! ) basically became somewhat of a deconstruction of cl.erith + ( bad ) stereotypes about aeris in general:

what if the helpless flower girl that needs saving from the big bad corporation is actually a liar who works for said corporation and was sent by them to retrieve something important(tm) and eliminate anyone that gets in her way? what if aeris, a secret member of the turks, has become so desensitized when interacting with other people since she is constantly wearing a mask and she can’t tell if she’s genuinely falling for someone or if her acting is just so good that even she can’t tell what’s real or fake anymore? what if i took all those bad takes about aeris knowing she would die, flip it, and actually make it so that she does know and still goes alone anyway because she wants to save lives for once instead of being the person who takes them away!!

me: imagine the drama!!! the angst!!! kas, casually: [redacted name b/c of spoilers] would just bring her back to life. me: WHAT?! >:(

apparently one character in the show is casually just GOD and can revive people so they can come back like:

my bubble was BURST. dreams DASHED. plans CRUSHED. dramatics aside, i still kept the idea of her dying because i do like the take of a more secretly jaded / not as ‘pure’ aeris that works for shinra and has to basically relearn how to trust / care about others again + i live to attack kas and all of her muses. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. anyway, the point is that i love them and they’re a dynamic i’m very invested in the more times passes. they’re both so stupid and passionate and loud ( the first in character thing i wrote when i remade this blog was them screaming at each other in an argument ) but they’re also sensitive, don’t open up to others easily, and have trauma!! oof x 100.

me: this ship won’t be serious lol the ship, months later: may or may not have a thread with them going on a date. may or may not have gone to ti.fa and cloud’s wedding together ( where kissafist’s tif.a may or may not threaten to smash his balls in if he doesn’t treat aeris right. *smash em, rip em plays in the distance as aeris aggressively laughs nervously* ), they may or may not get married and have twins that may or may not be named ren and rose. me: clown putting on make up.png

A = Aftercare Aftercare and post-coital cuddling are very important to Frank. To him, they’re a part of the sexual act; he would never neglect or ignore someone after sex, no matter the context. He’s touch starved, so he’s going to take every moment of that tired bliss and use it to be as close to his partner as humanly possible, making sure they’re comfortable and feeling okay physically and mentally.

Once Frank falls in love, he falls hard. That man is someone brand new when he’s with someone who makes him happy. It’s not hard to get Frank excited. Anytime his significant other does something that tugs at his heartstrings (literally every twelve minutes), he can be ready for action.

N = NO Obviously, if it’s not something that his significant other wants, he’s not gonna touch it with a ten foot pole. But for himself, Frank isn’t a fan of painful punishments for his partner or degradation in any form. It feels too similar to the things he did when Agent Orange had his team torturing and killing innocents. He doesn’t ever want to bring violence home to his lover.

O = Oral Everyone likes getting sucked off, but Frank’s kink for his partner’s satisfaction makes him prefer giving head. - DISCLAIMER: This blog is SUPER glitchy for me. Why? Who can say other than this place is a hellsite. I might at some point have to try out moving to a new account depending on how bad it gets. - I’m on the fence as to whether I’ll include other non-Bioshock related verses. Considering the rpc for the game is nearly non-existent on here, probably be the smarter choice, but currently, it’s a no. Nick’s story is so heavily intertwined with that of the first two Bioshock games, I cant picture his character being in other verses and it having as much impact. This could change in the future or if something is heavily plotted out. Overall if you want to interact, it will have to be within the world of Rapture. But - you are more than welcome to hmu or approach me with something if you have an idea.

P O I N T S O F I N T E R E S T

The Fabrays are well - known for being a very t r a d i t i o n a l Slytherin household. Russel works for the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic, meaning their family has a fairly HIGH status within the wizarding community. Quinn grew up knowing families such as the Greengrasses and Malfoys, and was brought up to share their opinions and values as they expected her to end up in Slytherin. However, she wound up being placed in Ravenclaw and thus had to ADAPT herself in order to fit in and make friends. Her relationship with her parents, from her first year onwards, is therefore rather shaky and continues to be that way in her adulthood.

Much like my Beauxbatons verse, Quinn is a QUARTER - VEELA, and while she is technically classed as a half - breed, she has been taught to say that she is a Pure - blooded witch if asked. It is a very important part of her characterisation and a lot of how she behaves is owed down to her background and genes. It also makes her incredibly lonely and feel ISOLATED, as she can never tell if someone is being nice to her because of her supernatural charm or because they are genuinely friendly. She has a lot of walls up because of this, and is incredibly aware of the world around her.

Following her education at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Quinn went on to work at the Daily Prophet as a journalist. She remained with the Daily Prophet until November 1997, when it became apparent that the wizarding world was heading into war. The majority of Quinn’s time during the Second Wizarding War is spent in hiding, keeping a low profile so that she won’t get captured by Snatchers. She makes a reappearance to fight in the Battle of Hogwarts alongside many of her old classmates.

H I S T O R Y

ONE CAN GET AWAY WITH a lot when they’re beautiful. It’s a matter of fact, really. The more breathtaking a person is, the more likely they will be SUCCESSFUL in life and forgiven for their daily sins. At least, that’s what she was taught.

Born into a long line of PROUD Slytherins on the Nineteenth of January 1978, Quinn was expected from birth to follow in her family’s footsteps. The Fabrays, as a whole, weren’t the most friendly of people. They were each highly - opinionated human beings who thought themselves to be a cut above everybody else. You had to EARN the right to be in their company, and if you were Muggle - born, you might as well have not existed, despite the QUESTIONABLE status of their own family’s blood. Quinn’s mother never concealed what she was, and never wanted her children to either, but her husband was obsessed with looks and insisted that she and their offspring proclaim that they were Pure - bloods. They weren’t outright followers of the Dark Lord, but Russel always held him in HIGH regard, and us such, her mother ----- the terrified sheep that she was ----- followed suit.

Much like many other eleven - year - olds, on the First of September, she was carted off the Hogwarts on the Hogwarts Express. The entire journey was filled with the BUZZ of excited returning students and students - to - be, all of which were anticipating the busy year ahead. They arrived in the Great Hall, and one by one, the first - years went, eagerly awaiting the moment in which the Sorting Hat would be placed on their heads and they would be sorted into their Hogwarts House. By the time it was Quinn’s turn to be sorted, she was ready to take up the family honour. To her left stood the Slytherin table, sparked with shades of GREEN and silver from the students’ robes, each other carrying a sliver of pride upon their chests. The hat went down, her eyes c l o s e d, and then her world got turned upside down.

The Sorting Hat, as it turned out, had other plans for her, and after some deliberation she stepped away from the stool and made her way towards the RAVENCLAW table. Making herself at home among the sea of blue was not an easy task, and after everything she had been taught, it felt like a betrayal to her family and their way of living. She was very quickly blasted the dark horse, the ‘ Fabray family let down ’, and in the weeks that followed, her parents BARELY acknowledged her, deciding that one daughter was better than the two that they had if there was to be anything but a Slytherin in the household. Suddenly, it was like n o t h i n g she ever did would be perfect. She could share their opinions and try to PLEASE them as much as she wanted, but they would never be satisfied with what she did as long as she was a part of Ravenclaw House.

Over time, her attention turned towards her appearance. If she couldn’t be accepted by her family, she could at least be loved and adored by her PEERS.

Quinn had always been a c h a r m i n g child, and the older she got, the more beautiful she became. Once puberty hit, all hell broke loose. It was like nobody could get enough of her. The boys were always the EASIEST to persuade, and for a while, she even liked the attention, but it made the girls in her year b i t t e r and jealous, and it was difficult to differentiate between true friendships and HOLLOW ones. All she had to do was bat her eyelashes and say a couple of words, and everyone would go crazy. Making friends with the girls in her dorm came from the promise of ATTENTION, and the twinge of guilt in the years to come when their boyfriends ( and occasional girlfriends ) tried to flirt with her right in front of them.

Being beautiful might have given her everything she ever wanted, but when it wasn’t genuine, all it ever did was make her feel like a SHAM. It would never fill the gap her family had left behind. She was never going to get their seal of approval, and all of her relationships were a lie. Nothing would make up for what she had lost.

A D D I T I O N A L N O T E S

As it is never really touched upon in the books as to whether those affected by a Veela’s power were strictly of ONE gender, my general headcanon is that it only affects those who are attracted to the gender of the Veela themselves. So if your male muse is only attracted to other male muses, they will not be affected by Quinn’s charms, since she is female. This is, of course, a personal headcanon, and you are more than welcome to have your muse be affected by her if you so wish. Just note that Quinn doesn’t often reciprocate those feelings and usually feels a mix of guilt and repulsion unless she’s doing it on purpose.

THE BOOK OF Judges - From The Douay-Rheims Bible - Latin Vulgate

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

This Book is called Judges, because it contains the history of what passed under the government of the judges, who ruled Israel before they had kings. The writer of it, according to the more general opinion, was the prophet Samuel. Ch. --- Some are of opinion, that the judges might have each left records of their respective administration, (M.) which might be put in order by Samuel. The author of this book seems to have lived under the reign of Saul, before David had expelled the Jebusites. C. xviii. 31. D. --- The captivity, which is mentioned v. 30, must be understood of that when the ark of God, as well as the idol Micha, and may of the people were taken by the Philistines. Huet. --- Many passages of the Psalms, &c. are taken from this book, which shew its antiquity. Ps. lxvii. 8. 2 K. xi. 21. The divine Providence is here displayed in a very striking manner. D. --- The theocracy still subsisted and God generally chose these judges to be his ministers, and to deliver the people, on their repentance, from some dreadful calamity. H. --- They exercised a supreme power, yet without bearing the insignia of regal authority, or imposing taxes, or making any alteration in the established laws. The Suffetes, who were Carthaginian magistrates, seem to have taken their name from these Ssuptim. D. --- When God did not raise up judges, in an extraordinary manner, a kind of ananchy prevailed. H. --- Each of the tribes regarded only their own affairs, and the republic was dissolved. Grotius. --- Prosperous and unfortunate days succeeded each other, in proportion as the people gave themselves up to repentance or to dissolution. Sicut se habebant peccata populi & misericordia Dei, alternaverunt prospera & adversa bellorum. S. Aug. C. D. xviii. 23. S. Jerom (ep. ad Eust. & ad Paulin.) exhorts us to penetrate the spiritual sense of the historical books, and he regards "the judges as so many figures" of the apostles, who established the church of Christ. Though some of them had been noted for their misconduct, they were reclaimed by the grace of God. Then all the judges, every one by name, whose heart was not corrupted, who turned not away from the Lord, that their memory might be blessed, &c. Eccli. xlvi. 13. 14. W. --- S. Paul mentions four of them, though the conduct of Jephte and of Samson might have been regarded as more exceptionable than that of Othoniel, who is said to have been filled with the spirit of the Lord. C. iii. 10. Serarius doubts not but they are all in heaven. Salien (A. 2640,) supposes that the transactions recorded in the five last chapters, took place before this 40th year from the death of Josue, which was the last of Othoniel. With respect to the chronology of these times, there are many opinions. Houbigant endeavours to shew that the system of Usher is inadmissible, as well as that of Petau. Marsham maintains that many of the captivities, and of the Judges, related only to some tribes, so that the different years which are specified, must be referred to the same period of time. Thus while Jephte ruled over those on the east side of the Jordan, and fought against the Ammonites, other judges endeavoured to repel the armies of the Philistines on the west. See 3 K. vi. 1. Judg. xi. 16. By this expedient, he finds no difficulty in shewing that 480 years elapsed from the departure out of Egypt till the building of the temple, and that the Israelites had occupied the country of the Ammonites during the space of 300 years. H. --- Houbigant seems to adopt this system in some respects, and he thinks that errors have crept into some of the numbers, so that Aod procured a peace of only 20 instead of 80 years, &c. He observes that the name of judge here designates, 1. A warrior, like Samson; 2. a person who passes sentence according to the law, which was the office of Heli; 3. one divinely commissioned to exercise the sovereign authority, as Samuel did, even after Saul had been elected king. Proleg. Chronol. Others have compared the power of these judges with that of the Roman Dictators, or the Archontes of Athens. Serarius. --- They were properly God's lieutenants. Their revenue seems to have been very precarious, and their exterior deportment modest and unassuming. They were guided by the declarations of the high priests, when arrayed with the Urim and Thummim; and their business was to promote the observance of the true religion, and to defend the people of God. This book concludes with the history of Samson, describing the transactions of 317 years, (C.) according to the calculation of Usher, which has met with the approbation of many of the learned, and is therefore chiefly inserted in this edition, as it was in that which was published in 1791, at Dublin, by the care of the Rev. B. Mac Mahon, who seems to have made some alterations. It is not indeed free from many serious difficulties. But we have not leisure to examine them at present. See C. iii. 11. 30. We shall only subjoin the chronological table of Houbigant, which is not very common, that the reader may perceive where they are chiefly at variance. Moses governed 40 years, Josue 20, the Ancients 20, king of Mesopotamia 8, Othoniel 40, Moabites 18, Aod 20, Samgar 0, the Chanaanites 20, Debora and Barac 40, Madianites 7, Gedeon 40, Abimelech 3, Thola 23, Ammonites 0, Jair 22, Jephte 6, Abesan 7, Ahialon 10, Abdon 8, Philistines 0, Samson 20, and with Heli 20, Heli and Samuel 25, Samuel and Saul 20, David 40, Solomon 3. In the 4th year of his reign the temple was begun, 480 years after the liberation from Egypt. Those to whom no years are assigned, lived at the same time with others whose years enter into the calculation. Thus Samgar gained a victory over the Philistines, while the Chanaanites held the Israelites in subjection. C. iii. 31. For other particulars we must refer to the author. Chron. sacra. H.

Chapter 1

The expedition and victory of Juda against the Chanaanites: who are tolerated in many places.

[1] After the death of Josue the children of Israel consulted the Lord, saying: Who shall go up before us against the Chanaanite, and shall be the leader of the war? Post mortem Josue, consuluerunt filii Israel Dominum, dicentes : Quis ascendet ante nos contra Chananaeum, et erit dux belli?

[2] And the Lord said: Juda shall go up: behold I have delivered the land into his hands. Dixitque Dominus : Judas ascendet : ecce tradidi terram in manus ejus.

[3] And Juda said to Simeon his brother: Come up with me into my lot, and fight against the Chanaanite, that I also may go along with thee into thy lot. And Simeon went with him. Et ait Judas Simeoni fratri suo : Ascende mecum in sortem meam, et pugna contra Chananaeum, ut et ego pergam tecum in sortem tuam. Et abiit cum eo Simeon.

[4] And Juda went up, and the Lord delivered the Chanaanite, and the Pherezite into their hands: and they slew of them in Bezec ten thousand men. Ascenditque Judas, et tradidit Dominus Chananaeum ac Pherezaeum in manus eorum : et percusserunt in Bezec decem millia virorum.

[5] And they found Adonibezec in Bezec, and fought against him, and they defeated the Chanaanite, and the Pherezite. Inveneruntque Adonibezec in Bezec, et pugnaverunt contra eum, ac percusserunt Chananaeum et Pherezaeum.

[6] And Adonibezec fled: and they pursued after him and took him, and cut off his fingers and toes. Fugit autem Adonibezec : quem persecuti comprehenderunt, caesis summitatibus manuum ejus ac pedum.

[7] And Adonibezec said: Seventy kings having their fingers and toes cut off, gathered up the leavings of the meat under my table: as I have done, so hath God requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there. [8] And the children of Juda besieging Jerusalem, took it, and put it to the sword, and set the whole city on fire. Oppugnantes ergo filii Juda Jerusalem, ceperunt eam, et percusserunt in ore gladii, tradentes cunctam incendio civitatem.

[9] And afterwards they went down and fought against the Chanaanite, who dwelt in the mountains, and in the south, and in the plains. Et postea descendentes pugnaverunt contra Chananaeum, qui habitabat in montanis, et ad meridiem, et in campestribus.

[10] And Juda going forward against the Chanaanite, that dwelt in Hebron (the name whereof was in former times Cariath-Arbe) slew Sesai, and Ahiman, and Tholmai: Pergensque Judas contra Chananaeum, qui habitabat in Hebron ( cujus nomen fuit antiquitus Cariath Arbe), percussit Sesai, et Ahiman, et Tholmai :

[11] And departing from thence he went to the inhabitants of Dabir, the ancient name of which was Cariath-Sepher, that is, the city of letters. atque inde profectus abiit ad habitatores Dabir, cujus nomen vetus erat Cariath Sepher, id est, civitas litterarum.

[12] And Caleb said: He that shall take Cariath-Sepher, and lay it waste, to him will I give my daughter Axa to wife. Dixitque Caleb : Qui percusserit Cariath Sepher, et vastaverit eam, dabo ei Axam filiam meam uxorem.

[13] And Othoniel the son of Cenez, the younger brother of Caleb, having taken it, he gave him Axa his daughter to wife. Cumque cepisset eam Othoniel filius Cenez frater Caleb minor, dedit ei Axam filiam suam conjugem.

[14] And as she was going on her way her husband admonished her to ask a field of her father. And as she sighed sitting on her ass, Caleb said to her: What aileth thee? Quam pergentem in itinere monuit vir suus ut peteret a patre suo agrum. Quae cum suspirasset sedens in asino, dixit ei Caleb : Quid habes?

[15] But she answered: Give me a blessing, for thou hast given me a dry land: give me also a watery land. So Caleb gave her the upper and the nether watery ground. At illa respondit : Da mihi benedictionem, quia terram arentem dedisti mihi : da et irriguam aquis. Dedit ergo ei Caleb irriguum superius, et irriguum inferius.

[16] And the children of the Cinite, the kinsman of Moses, went up from the city of palms, with the children of Juda into the wilderness of his lot, which is at the south side of Arad, and they dwelt with him. Filii autem Cinaei cognati Moysi ascenderunt de civitate palmarum cum filiis Juda, in desertum sortis ejus, quod est ad meridiem Arad, et habitaverunt cum eo.

[17] And Juda went with Simeon his brother, and they together defeated the Chanaanites that dwelt in Sephaath, and slew them. And the name of the city was called Horma, that is, Anathema. Abiit autem Judas cum Simeone fratre suo, et percusserunt simul Chananaeum qui habitabat in Sephaath, et interfecerunt eum. Vocatumque est nomen urbis, Horma, id est, anathema.

[18] And Juda took Gaza with its confines, and Ascalon and Accaron with their confines. Cepitque Judas Gazam cum finibus suis, et Ascalonem, atque Accaron cum terminis suis.

[19] And the Lord was with Juda, and he possessed the hill country: but was not able to destroy the inhabitants of the valley, because they had many chariots armed with scythes. Fuitque Dominus cum Juda, et montana possedit : nec potuit delere habitatores vallis, quia falcatis curribus abundabant.

[20] And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said, who destroyed out of it the three sons of Enac. Dederuntque Caleb Hebron, sicut dixerat Moyses, qui delevit ex ea tres filios Enac.

[21] But the sons of Benjamin did not destroy the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem: and the Jebusite hath dwelt with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem until this present day. Jebusaeum autem habitatorem Jerusalem non deleverunt filii Benjamin : habitavitque Jebusaeus cum filiis Benjamin in Jerusalem, usque in praesentem diem.

[22] The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the Lord was with them. Domus quoque Joseph ascendit in Bethel, fuitque Dominus cum eis.

[23] For when they were besieging the city, which before was called Luza, Nam cum obsiderent urbem, quae prius Luza vocabatur,

[24] They saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him: shew us the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy. viderunt hominem egredientem de civitate, dixeruntque ad eum : Ostende nobis introitum civitatis, et faciemus tecum misericordiam.

[25] And when he had shewn them, they smote the city with the edge of the sword: but that man and all his kindred they let go: Qui cum ostendisset eis, percusserunt urbem in ore gladii : hominem autem illum, et omnem cognationem ejus, dimiserunt.

[26] Who being sent away, went into the land of Hethim, and built there a city, and called it Luza: which is so called until this day. Qui dimissus, abiit in terram Hetthim, et aedificavit ibi civitatem, vocavitque eam Luzam : quae ita appellatur usque in praesentem diem.

[27] Manasses also did not destroy Bethsan, and Thanac with their villages, nor the inhabitants of Dor, and Jeblaam, and Mageddo with their villages. And the Chanaanite began to dwell with them. Manasses quoque non delevit Bethsan, et Thanac cum viculis suis, et habitatores Dor, et Jeblaam, et Mageddo cum viculis suis, coepitque Chananaeus habitare cum eis.

[28] But after Israel was grown strong he made them tributaries, and would not destroy them. Postquam autem confortatus est Israel, fecit eos tributarios, et delere noluit.

[29] Ephraim also did not slay the Chanaanite that dwelt in Gazer, but dwelt with him. Ephraim etiam non interfecit Chananaeum, qui habitabat in Gazer, sed habitavit cum eo.

[30] Zabulon destroyed not the inhabitants of Cetron, and Naalol: but the Chanaanite dwelt among them, and became their tributaries. Zabulon non delevit habitatores Cetron, et Naalol : sed habitavit Chananaeus in medio ejus, factusque est ei tributarius.

[31] Aser also destroyed not the inhabitants of Accho, and of Sidon, of Ahalab, and of Achazib, and of Helba, and of Aphec, and of Rohob: Aser quoque non delevit habitatores Accho, et Sidonis, Ahalab, et Achazib, et Helba, et Aphec, et Rohob :

[32] And he dwelt in the midst of the Chanaanites the inhabitants of that land, and did not slay them. habitavitque in medio Chananaei habitatoris illius terrae, nec interfecit eum.

[33] Nephtali also destroyed not the inhabitants of Bethsames, and of Bethanath: and he dwelt in the midst of the Chanaanites the inhabitants of the land, and the Bethsamites and Bethanites were tributaries to him. Nephthali quoque non delevit habitatores Bethsames, et Bethanath : et habitavit inter Chananaeum habitatorem terrae, fueruntque ei Bethsamitae et Bethanitae tributarii.

[34] And the Amorrhite straitened the children of Dan in the mountain, and gave them not place to go down to the plain: Arctavitque Amorrhaeus filios Dan in monte, nec dedit eis locum ut ad planiora descenderent :

[35] And he dwelt in the mountain Hares, that is, of potsherds, in Aialon and Salebim. And the hand of the house of Joseph was heavy upon him, and he became tributary to him. habitavitque in monte Hares, quod interpretatur testaceo, in Ajalon et Salebim. Et aggravata est manus domus Joseph, factusque est ei tributarius.

[36] And the border of the Amorrhite was from the ascent of the scorpion, the rock, and the higher places. Fuit autem terminus Amorrhaei ab ascensu Scorpionis, petra, et superiora loca.

Commentary:

Ver. 1. After. Heb. "And after," as if this consultation had taken place immediately after the decease of their late victorious general, who had not pointed out his successor. But it is probable that the ancients who governed in their respective tribes, (C.) were only roused to this act of vigour some time after, on seeing the preparations of the Chanaanites, particularly of Adonibezec, whose power became very alarming. H. --- Indeed it is wonderful how he had escaped the vigilance of Josue, if he had been king during the lifetime (C.) of that enterprising leader. It is therefore more likely that he took advantage of the lethargy of the Israelites after his death, and rose to a degree of eminence, which made the people of God consult the high priest, how they were to resist his efforts, (H.) who was to be their generalissimo, (C.) or which of the tribes was to make head against him. M. --- God only gave answer to the last question, and it does not appear that all Israel was engaged in this war. After the defeat of the king, the different tribes might easily have subdued the enemies who held possession of part of their territory, if they had been vigorous.

Ver. 2. Said, by the mouth of Phinees, (Josephus v. 2,) who had succeeded Eleazar in the pontificate. The latter survived Josue some time, so that this must have happened some time later. Le Clerc offers violence to the text, when he asserts that the war against Adonibezec took place under the government of Josue. --- Juda. Some suppose that this is the name of the leader: but most people conclude from the sequel, that it designated the tribe. C. --- This first judge was of this tribe, but not all of them. The manner of consulting the Lord was by the high priest praying before the tabernacle. Ex. xxix. W.

Ver. 3. Brother. They had the same mother, Lia, and were intermixed in the same country. The two tribes unite both for the public and their own private advantage. The king whom they attacked first, did not dwell in the territory of Juda, as the others did, whom they defeated in this chapter.

Ver. 4. Pherezite. This name denotes "a countryman," as the former does "a merchant." None of the children of Chanaan were of this appellation. Gen. x. 15. The people of the country assembled therefore at Bezec, where Saul called a rendezvous when he was going to attack Jabes, and which seems to have been near the Jordan, 17 miles from Sichem. Eus. S. Jer. --- It signifies "lightning." A place of this name lies to the west of Bethlehem. M.

Ver. 5. Adonibezec, "Lord of Bezec." The cruelty of this tyrant, and the oppression which he probably made some of the Israelites suffer, roused their attention, and they treated him as he had treated others. He had perhaps recourse to such a cruel expedient, to disable his enemies from ever entering the lists against him afterwards, as the Athenians, who cut off the fingers of the inhabitants of Egina, that these islanders might not dispute with them the empire of the sea. Cic. Offic. 3. Some have thus maimed themselves that they might be exempted from going to war, a practice not unusual among the Romans; and the Italian word poltron, signifies one whose fingers are cut off, as it was supposed, out of cowardice. David ordered the hands and the feet of the murderers of Isboseth to be cut off, and this sort of punishment is common in the eastern countries. Eight hundred Greeks who had been treated in this manner by the Persians, presented themselves to Alexander, at Persepolis, to implore his protection. Curt. &c.

Ver. 7. Table, at different times. H. --- These were probably princes of some cities of Chanaan, who had been conquered by the tyrant. He obliged them to feed, like dogs, of what he threw down from his splendid table. Thus Sesostris made the kings whom he had overcome, drag his chariot. Sapor forced the Emperor Valerian to serve as a footstool, when he got on horseback. Tamberlane fed Bajazet in a cage, like a wild beast. Jovius, &c. C. --- Me. So true is that Wisdom (xi. 17,) by what things a man sinneth, by the same also he is tormented. M.

Ver. 8. Jerusalem. This city was divided into two; one part was called Jebus, the other Salem; the one was in the tribe of Juda, the other in the tribe of Benjamin. After it was taken and burnt by the men of Juda, it was quickly rebuilt again by the Jebusites, as we may gather from v. 21, and continued in their possession till it was taken by king David. Ch. --- Fire. They treated it with such severity, because it seems to have revolted, (Serarius) though the text of Josue (x. 25,) only says that the king was slain. But (C. xv. 63. and here) v. 21. it is said, that the children of Juda and of Benjamin dwelt along with the Jebusites.

Ver. 9. Plains, towards the west, which were very fruitful. They did not expel all the inhabitants from this part, as they had done from the mountains, which lay on the south of the promised land, v. 19. C.

Ver. 10. Hebron. This expedition against Hebron, &c. is the same as is related Jos. xv. 24. It is here repeated, to give the reader at once a short sketch of all the achievements of the tribe of Juda against the Chanaanites. Ch. --- Josue had taken Hebron before; (Jos. x. 37,) and Caleb retakes it. C.

Ver. 11. The city of letters. Perhaps so called, from some famous school or library kept there. Ch. --- The explanation, that is, &c. is added by the Vulg. H. --- Madrid, in Arabic, means "the mother of sciences." M.

Ver. 13. Brother, or near relation, but much younger. See Jos. xv. 17. C.

Ver. 16. The Cinite. Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses, was called Cinæus, or the Cinite: and his children, who came along with the children of Israel, settled themselves among them in the land of Chanaan, embracing their worship and religion. From these the Rechabites sprang, of whom see Jerem. xxxv. ---The city of palms. Jericho, so called from the abundance of palm-trees, (Ch). or rather Engaddi, which is sometimes called Hazazon-Thamar, on that account. It lies nearer to the Dead Sea. Jericho was not rebuilt till the reign of Achab. See Jos. vi. 26. --- Arad was one of the most southern towns of Juda, near the country of the Amalecites. Saul ordered the descendants of Jethro to depart from among them. 1 K. xv. 6. The Israelites had defeated the king of Arad long before. Num. xxi. 1. C. --- With him. Heb. "the people" of Israel, (M.) or of Arad. C.

Ver. 17. Sephaath, near Maresa, where Asa defeated the king of Arabia. 2 Par. xiv. 9. It was also called Sephata, and afterwards Horma. C. --- Sept. "they anathematized it, and utterly destroyed it, and they called the city Exolethreusis, "utter ruin." H. --- Whether they had engaged themselves by vow to do so, or they treated the city in this manner in thanksgiving for the victory, is uncertain. M.

Ver. 18. Gaza, &c. These were three of the principal cities of the Philistines, famous both in sacred and profane history. They were taken at this time by the Israelites; but as they took no care to put garrisons in them, the Philistines soon recovered them again, (Ch). or perhaps the villages and territory were only seized by Juda; the cities being too well defended. Josue had not attacked them. Jos. xii. 3. Josephus says that only Ascalon and Azotus, in the plain, fell into the hands of the Israelites; and the Roman Sept. reads with a negation, (C.) which is inserted by Grabe in his edition as an interpolation, or as a peculiarity of the Alex. MSS. "and Juda did (not) possess Gaza with its dependencies, and Ascalon...and Accaron...and Azotus, with its fields around." H. --- The situation of Gaza, Ascalon and Accaron in the plain, would seem to secure them from being captured, v. 19. S. Aug. and Procopius admit the negation. But the original and all the versions reject it, so that the children of Juda must have had possession of these cities at least for a short time. C. See C. xv. and xvi. 1 K. vi. 17. M.

Ver. 19. Was not able, &c. Through a cowardly fear of their chariots armed with hooks and scythes, and for want of confidence in God. Ch. --- Heb. does not sy expressly that Juda could not: quia non ad expellendum, &c. He had not the courage or the will. With God's assistance, what had he to fear? Were these Philistines with their chariots, more terrible than the giants in their fortresses? --- Scythes. Heb. receb barzel, "chariots of iron." C. --- The Rom. and Alex. Sept. have "Rechab was opposed to them." H. --- The edit. of Basil adds, "and they had chariots of iron," as S. Aug. (q. 5,) reads. A double translation is thus given. C. --- These chariots were calculated to cut down all that came in contact with them. Curt. iv. W.

Ver. 20. Enac, mentioned v. 10. Sept. add, that "he took the three cities...and destroyed," &c. See Jos. xv. 14. H.

Ver. 21. Day, before the reign of David. See Jos. xv. 63. The Jebusites occupied the citadel, &c. C.

Ver. 22. Of Joseph, on the west side of the Jordan, attacked Bethel, which it does not appear that Josue molested. H. --- Instead of house, some Heb. MSS. and the Arab. and Sept. read, "the sons," which seems to be the better reading. Kennicott.

Ver. 23. Besieging. Heb. "sent to descry," or they came upon it like spies.

Ver. 24. Mercy. The city belonged of right to them, so that they might use this means, as they were not bound to enquire by what motives the man was actuated thus to betray his country. He might be convinced, like Rahab, that God had granted it to the Israelites, and these might justly requite his good dispositions and suffer him to depart in peace. Bonf. Grot. C.

Ver. 26. Hetthim. The Hethite lived towards the south of Chanaan. The man probably retired into the stony Arabia, where we find the city of Lusa or Elysa. Ptolemy v. 16. --- He gave it this name in memory of his native city, (C.) which was called Luza, or "of nuts." M.

Ver. 27. Bethsan, &c. See Jos. xvii. 11. --- Began. Heb. "would dwell." H. ---The Israelites sinfully acquiesced, partly through slothfulness and the dislike of war, and partly that they might receive tribute from the Chanaanites. M.

Ver. 28. Them. We shall see the punishment of their prevarication during the greatest part of this book. C.

Ver. 31. Accho. Heb. haco. The Greeks not knowing the derivation of this word, supposed that the city was so called from ake, "a remedy," as they pretend that Hercules was cured in this place. It was also called Ptolemais, after the king of Egypt. The little river Belus, and the famous bed of sand so proper for making glass, were in the neighbourhood. Plin. v. 19. --- Ahalab. The situation is unknown, unless it be Aleppo. They say it is the famous city of Berea. C.

Ver. 35. He dwelt. That is, the Amorrhite. Ch. --- Heb. "But the Amorrhites would dwell in Mount Hares, in Aialon, and in Salebim." Some copies of the Sept. seem to give the meaning of these proper names, though inaccurately. H. --- Solomon had one of his twelve officers at Salebim, in the tribe of Dan. 3 K. iv. 9.

Ver. 36. Rock, Petra, the capital of Arabia, which Josephus (iii. 2,) assigns to Amalec. The Amorrhites dwelt in many parts of the land of promise, (C.) particularly in the higher places about the Dead Sea. H.
