Hate it when j&h adaptations give Jekyll a female love interest, like bitch, he HAS a love interest who is introduced on the first page, and his name is MR UTTERSON THE LAWYER.

#well technically it's “gabriel john utterson' but those are the first 4 words of the book #my random stuff #dr jekyll and mr hyde #jekyll and hyde #and on a more serious note-#it tells me that the adaptation understood nothing about the novella #because the queer subtext* is almost domtext #*and yes i say subtext as opposed to coding because #Stevenson's purpose was to oppose the repressive victorian social structures #and the unspoken social codes and unnecessary laws surrounding what people could and couldn't do #and; yeah sure there were plenty of those for straight relationships #but doubly so for queer ones #queerness is SO important to this novella even though it's never overtly mentioned #edit: just saw a post that reminded me of this one and I'd like to add:#adaptations that give jekyll a female LI seem to make her ONLY a love interest without any development #and usually they only exist to get raped or killed by Hyde #it's. not great.

Yokohama’s politics are mildly horrendous when you think about it. There’s literally a slums region (read: Despair Pit of the Poor). No one is doing anything about it, there’s active crime and gang issues in this area but it’s not a priority in the city. Somehow making sure the layman doesn’t know about any of the silly wacky bullshittery that happens with the supernatural is more important than a literally pit for people to rot in.

Just some things I’ve been thinking about since my last rewatch/reread of BSD. The ADA and ability users are known as a myth to the general public (see Atsushi’s reaction when he first learned about where Kunikida and Dazai worked)

The government literally pays an entire branch to to cover up special ability related incidents. (Image ripped right off the bsd wiki btw)

I think it’s safe to say the government funnels more money into this division than poor relief. I know the city is still recovering from major conflict and effects of war but m a n. Nobody should live here, it’s hilariously bad.

In 1857, the Married Women’s Property Bill was first discussed in parliament. In 1858, The English Women’s Journal was founded, followed in 1859 by the formation of The Society for Promoting the Employment of Women.

Women’s colleges were springing up all across Great Britain and Victorian ladies were concerning themselves not only with women’s education and employment, but also with suffrage and the rights of wives. In the 1864 publication, Crinoline in its Bissextile Phases, a lady responds to the male demand that females give up their crinolines with a verse which speaks volumes for feminine feeling in the Victorian era:

‘They tell us, again, in a bustling street

Our Crinolines hurt their poor legs or feet.

Not badly, I trust, — ’twere the doctor to pay,

My recipe is, keep out of our way.’
