Second Life Browser Beta - A New Forward Advancement For Second Life

You know as do all of us bloggers who are influencers in one way or another for Second Life we come across things in our travel. I followed Second Life's official Tumblr page and noticed that they had just released their browser version of Second Life to try. This is still new technology and in development but this might be a game changer for those who don't have strong laptops to run third-party viewers or don't have a whole lot of space on their laptops for one reason or another. I decided to give it a try tonight and here is my experience.

Honestly Not Bad:

To be fair, I was expecting it to be a lot worse than it truly is, with lots of lag and horrible frame rates that would make Second Life pretty much unusable. But honestly, for a browser version the frame rates weren't horrible if you're not used to being close to perfect with a gaming PC. I was getting between 29-52 frames per second in the MadPea sim this evening when I logged in. Because MadPea is where I logged out from last time after my MadPea post.

Mesh Load Times:

The loading times for mesh objects were really quick, it loaded a whole store fully in about 3 minutes maybe a little less. This was shocking to me because there were a lot of scripts and objects in this area. Even when I participated in a MadPea unlimited gaming sim with HUD everything loaded really quickly. This was amazing to see.

Browser Viewer Only Good For 10 Minutes:

Because the browser version is still in its experimental phase you're only allowed to use it for 10 minutes at a time, this I'm assuming is because streaming a virtual platform like this on a browser is I'm sure very costly. Sadly, it's only 10 minutes because I really enjoyed the experience for the 10 minutes I was on it before being kicked out. It's also nice when it comes to my multi-tasking because all I had to do was switch tabs to write this post and go back to the browser viewer. This made things a lot easier than minimizing the actual Firestorm Viewer and making it larger every time I needed to be in the world while typing. I can see this as being a great option for Second Life users as Second Life continues to work on perfecting this. It will never be perfect but this is going to be a great step forward.

The Main Cons I have:

The major problem which somewhat hinders my experience, is I love taking photos from inside of Second Life. To open up certain things like camera controls, people, maps, etc you have to scroll down and then scroll back up. Not everything fits on the screen and this can get a little annoying, especially when a lot of the time you need those tabs accessible while using Second Life. At least for me, this is something I need for a positive experience, scrolling is not ideal. I like everything in one place right in front of me. Attempting to pull of my conversations is a struggle because I don't like keeping the chat box on my screen unless I'm using it to communicate with others.

There's also another odd thing that happened before logging out. I was testing the viewpoints on the camera and for some reason, I no longer had the ability at that point to move my avatar and only move the camera controls which is kind of a weird bug to have. During this time, I went into Mouselook, DO NOT GO INTO MOUSELOOK only if you don't want to crash completely before the 10 minutes are up my CMD command center for my computer came up and the browser viewer went black. Definitely not ideal but this was only when I entered mouselook mode.

In The End:

I can see the browser-based version of Second Life being a huge step forward for this virtual platform/world. As you know virtual worlds like Roblox and IMVU have browser-based versions of their virtual worlds and this is helpful for users who can't download a viewer or want more of an ability to multi-task and not use too many computer resources. I really think that this is going to change the way users interact within Second Life. Overall this was a positive experience. I was expecting some bugs as this is not perfected and is still in beta, but honestly, there weren't as many issues as I thought there would be for something so new for the community to try and experience. As someone who did backend coding at one point, I can easily say that this is on the right track to bringing Second Life up to speed with other virtual worlds that have been browser and mobile-based for some time along with their downloadable viewers. We are coming into a world where technology is advancing now more than ever and this is really exciting to see. I can't wait to see the advancements of the browser platform as 2025 continues forward.

If You're New To Second Life, This is the Post for you - Links and More to Jump Start Your Virtual Experience in Second Life

I have been in deep thought about this with another Second Life user recently. We spoke about how Second Life pays more attention to its current user base and doesn't really put the effort in to help the newer users. Yeah, there are tutorial sims but sometimes this just isn't enough for newer players. Learning how Second Life and third-party viewers work is an entire process. You don't have a full grasp of an entire viewer until months into playing Second Life, and even then some people get impatient and stop well before then and then the Second Life population dwindles by the player then becomes inactive.

However, If you're new I'm here to make things a little easier for you, I am compiling some of the tutorial islands and newbie-friendly places in this post for you that can help you get started with learning various parts of your viewer and customizing your avatar. Continue reading below to find these places compiled just for you.

Tutorial Islands (these are places where you can go to learn the basic mechanics of how to use Second Life in a step-by-step manner):

Safe Hub in Nelsonia

Welcome Hub - This is a social plaza but dependent on where you go it shows you tutorials on how to do things within Second Life.

New Resident Island - Found in Lawst Paradise, if you are a fan of Fantasy-themed places this is a tutorial location decorated in a Fantasy-themed way.

FC Learning Grove at Emain Ablach - Found in Faerie Mere this is a Medieval-themed tutorial sim to check out that will help you.

KCI Kuula - New Citizens Incorporated - Found in Kuula, this is a sim dedicated to helping new members run from a community outside of the general creators of Second Life. This sim has a lot of great resources and people who are willing to help.

Sandboxes (do you like building, creating, driving, and exploring your creativity in a vast virtual world, Sandboxes are the place to do that. Here is a list of a few Sandboxes that can help to get you started)

Backdrop City - This is a nonprofit community project for bloggers, photographers, and builders. There are backdrops for influencers and photographers along with a 4-hour return Sandbox area.

Aldora Sandbox - Two Sandbox regions are connected with a 7-hour auto return for builders.

Fluffy 3.0 at Sticky - This is an LGBTQIA+ owned and operated community, this is a furry sandbox but all are welcome to be there.

Leading Sandbox and Hangout

Vortex Adult Sandbox - It's an adult building region

Bellisseria Sandbox - This is a Sandbox created for residents who want to experiment and test various aspects of the Linden Homes, this is where you can rezz content inside the homes to see which one you might like if you want to become a premium member and use a Linden Home.

Off the record - I'm a huge advocate for newer players joining Second Life Premium as it provides you with everything you would need to live your best virtual life. I am not promoting in any sense, I am someone who has experienced and paid for Premium firsthand and has continued since it started. From my personal experience if you're on Second Life more than 3-4 times a month you already got your money's worth out of the premium version. I have a post already created about the Premium Membership, please check it out for more information if you're curious about it.

*Note: The important thing is don't give up, I know Second Life can seem a little overwhelming with how much there is to do, learn, and explore but it really is an amazing experience and something to get into since everything is going technological anyway, there is something for everyone. Don't get frustrated a lot Second Life is just learning how everything works and what you want to do to get the best experience out of Second Life for yourself. *

Some questions to ask yourself to help you find what you want to do within Second Life:

What are some things I want to do in Real Life that I cannot?

If I could travel anywhere, where would it be?

If I could be anything or create myself in a whole new way, how would I look?

I'm creative, how can I use that to enhance my Second Life experience? What is there within Second Life where I can let this part of me out?

What do I enjoy doing and how can I experience what I enjoy and love within Second Life?

I enjoy playing board games and video games, what is in Second Life that can provide me with similar experiences?

I enjoy RPing and RolePlay Games what are some RP groups or RP sims that I can join?

I want to make new friends and meet new people from around the world. What can I do to have a positive experience in being able to do this?

I loved Legos as a kid and building, Can I build things inside of Second Life, and if so, where can I learn and what can I use to build within Second Life? Is there a group of builders that I can learn from and chat with in the process?

I enjoy the clubbing scene are there places I can go to experience the same without leaving my home?(for my introverts out there)

These are just a few specific questions to get you thinking about what you would like to do within Second Life and how you can have those experiences.

These are just a few links to get you started as a new member I wanted a post where everything was in one place for you. Please keep in mind that these are specific to the newest sims that are New User Friendly within Second Life, a lot of these are on the Destinations page of the Second Life browser website as well as within Destinations through the third-party viewer that you can visit that are considered "popular." As you grow within your Second Life experience, there are of course more places that you can go that are Sandboxes or places for members of all types and experience levels to enjoy each others' companies, but these are just to get you started. I also recommend looking at some of my "SL Travel" posts as these are places you can explore outside of this list where you can meet other people who aren't just new. The sky is the limit within Second Life, there is so much you can do and experience, it really is what you make of it!
